DENVER (Reuters) â€" A Colorado woman who admitted her 13 month-old son drowned in the bathtub while she played on Facebook was sentenced on Friday to 10 years in prison, prosecutors said.

A judge also ordered Shannon Johnson, 34, to serve five years of mandatory parole upon her release from prison, Jennifer Finch, spokeswoman for the Weld County District Attorney's Office, said in a written statement.

Johnson pleaded guilty in March to felony child abuse resulting in the death of her son, Joseph.

She called 911 from her home in Fort Lupton, Colorado, last September when she found the toddler slumped over in the bathwater making "gurgling" sounds, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Under questioning by investigators, Johnson admitted she put her son in the bathtub and went into another room to play Facebook game "Cafe World," police said. The boy was alone for 10 minutes, she told them.

Joseph was airlifted to a Denver hospital, where medical personnel could not revive him.

Johnson told police she often left her son unattended in the bath, because as an "independent" child he liked to be left alone, and that she did not want him to be "a mama's boy." (Editing by Alex Dobuzinskis)

Health and Food / Re: Top 7 Chakras
April 16, 2011, 08:07:56 AM

In Western culture, a concept similar to that of prana can be traced back as far as the 18th century's Franz Anton Mesmer, who used "animal magnetism" to cure disease. However it was only in 1927 that the shakta theory of seven main chakras, that has become most popular in the West, was introduced, largely through the translation of two Indian texts: the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, and the Padaka-Pancaka, by Sir John Woodroffe, alias Arthur Avalon, in a book titled The Serpent Power. This book is extremely detailed and complex, and later the ideas were developed into the predominant Western view of the chakras by C. W. Leadbeater in his book The Chakras. Many of the views which directed Leadbeater's understanding of the chakras were influenced by previous theosophist authors, in particular Johann Georg Gichtel, a disciple of Jakob Böhme, and his book Theosophia Practica (1696), in which Gitchtel directly refers to inner force centers, a concept reminiscent of the chakras.

Due to the similarities between the Chinese and Indian philosophies, the notion of chakras was quickly blended into Chinese practices such as acupuncture and belief in ki. The convergence of these two distinct healing traditions and their common practitioners' own inventiveness have led to an ever-changing and expanding array of concepts in the western world. According to medical intuitive and author, Caroline Myss, who described chakras in her work Anatomy of the Spirit (1996), "Every thought and experience you've ever had in your life gets filtered through these chakra databases. Each event is recorded into your cells...", in effect your biography becomes your biology. --Wiki

Inspiration & Hope / The Mountain
April 15, 2011, 08:52:39 PM
There were two warring tribes in the Andes, one that lived in the lowlands and the other high in the mountains. The mountain people invaded the lowlanders one day, and as part of their plundering of the people, they kidnapped a baby of one of the lowlander families and took the infant with them back up into the mountains.

The lowlanders didn't know how to climb the mountain. They didn't know any of the trails that the mountain people used, and they didn't know where to find the mountain people or how to track them in the steep terrain.

Even so, they sent out their best party of fighting men to climb the mountain and bring the baby home.

The men tried first one method of climbing and then another. They tried one trail and then another. After several days of effort, however, they had climbed only several hundred feet.

Feeling hopeless and helpless, the lowlander men decided that the cause was lost, and they prepared to return to their village below.

As they were packing their gear for the descent, they saw the baby's mother walking toward them. They realized that she was coming down the mountain that they hadn't figured out how to climb.

And then they saw that she had the baby strapped to her back. How could that be?

One man greeted her and said, "We couldn't climb this mountain. How did you do this when we, the strongest and most able men in the village, couldn't do it?"

She shrugged her shoulders and said, "It wasn't your baby."

History / Dr. Walter Reed and Yellow Fever
April 15, 2011, 07:35:26 PM
Walter Reed,  (born Sept. 13, 1851, Belroi, Va., U.S.â€"died Nov. 22, 1902, Washington, D.C.), U.S. Army pathologist and bacteriologist who led the experiments that proved that yellow fever is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. The Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C., was named in his honour.

During most of the 19th century it had been widely held that yellow fever was spread by fomitesâ€"i.e., articles such as bedding and clothing that had been used by a yellow-fever patient. As late as 1898, a U.S. official report ascribed the spread to this cause. Meanwhile, other methods of transmission had been suggested. In 1881 the Cuban physician and epidemiologist Carlos Juan Finlay began to formulate a theory of insect transmission. In succeeding years he maintained and developed the theory but did not succeed in proving it. In 1896 an Italian bacteriologist, Giuseppe Sanarelli, claimed that he had isolated from yellow-fever patients an organism he called Bacillus icteroides. The U.S. Army now appointed Reed and army physician James Carroll to investigate Sanarelli’s bacillus. It also sent Aristides Agramonte, an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army, to investigate the yellow-fever cases in Cuba. Agramonte isolated Sanarelli’s bacillus not only from one-third of the yellow-fever patients but also from persons suffering from other diseases. Reed and Carroll published their first report in April 1899 and in February 1900 submitted a complete report for publication. It showed that Sanarelli’s bacillus belonged to the group of the hog-cholera bacillus and was in yellow fever a secondary invader.

Before this report had actually been published, an outbreak of yellow fever occurred in the U.S. garrison at Havana, and a commission was appointed to investigate it. The members of the commission were Reed, who was to act as chairman, Carroll, Agramonte, and a bacteriologist, Jesse W. Lazear. In the summer of 1900, when the commission investigated an outbreak of what had been diagnosed as malaria in barracks 200 miles (300 kilometres) from Havana, Reed found that the disease was actually yellow fever. Of the nine prisoners in the prison cell of the post, one contracted yellow fever and died, but none of the other eight was affected. Reed and his colleagues thought it possible that this patient, and only he, might have been bitten by some insect. Reed therefore decided that the main work of the commission would be to prove or disprove the agency of an insect intermediate host.

On August 27, 1900, an infected mosquito was allowed to feed on Carroll, and he developed a severe attack of yellow fever. Shortly afterward Lazear was bitten, developed yellow fever, and died. In November 1900 a small hutted camp was established, and controlled experiments were performed on volunteers. Reed proved that an attack of yellow fever was caused by the bite of an infected mosquito, Stegomyia fasciata (later renamed Aedes aegypti) and that the same result could be obtained by injecting into a volunteer blood drawn from a patient suffering from yellow fever. Reed found no evidence that yellow fever could be conveyed by fomites, and he showed that a house became infected only by the presence of infected mosquitoes. In February 1901 official action in Cuba was begun by U.S. military engineers under Major W.C. Gorgas on the basis of Reed’s findings, and within 90 days Havana was freed from yellow fever.

The victim was identified as Michelle Aaron Lubaton, student of the Ateneo de Davao University and native of Surala, South Cotabato.

Lubaton was declared dead on arrival at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) after she was stabbed dead by Jhunel (name withheld for being a minor), 16, a resident of Barangay Tibungco around 2:30 a.m. on Monday along Ponce street, Barangay 28-C Poblacion, Davao City.

Gaspar Avila, owner of GMGK Apartment where the victim resided, told Sun.Star SuperBalita that he heard loud noises and screams inside the victim's room.

Avila added that the suspect was his helper since he suffered from stroke.

The suspect immediately fled the second floor of the apartment by jumping off the gate. Jhunel reportedly sustained wounds from the sharp iron grills.

"Sa akong nahibaloan sa among pag-istoryahanay sa suspek, naa siyay pagnanasa sa victim kay gwapa man god si Michelle. Si Jhunel gyud ang suspect kay naa may nakakita sa iya nga migawas sa kwarto (I know from our previous conversations that Jhunel wanted the victim since Michelle was very pretty. Someone saw him leaving her room at the time of the incident)," Rommel, Jhunel's cousin said.

Rommel told Sun.Star SuperBalita that the suspect was jailed twice before for robbery charges in Tibungco.

"Napriso naman daw na siya. Mianhi lang na siya diri sa amoa kay mitabang pagbantay sa among Uncle Gaspar (He lived with us to help take care of Uncle Gaspar)," Rommel said.

Senior Inspector Ronald Lao, chief of the Sta. Ana Police Station, told Sun.Star SuperBalita Monday afternoon that they have launched manhunt operations to locate Jhunel.

As of press time, police have yet to determine the motive for the crime and still await the autopsy results on the victim's body. (AD)
