my only hope is that there would be no more filipino youth delegate who will risk everything and make a run as an illegal in europe.  i've met two or so (in a country in europe) who were part of bohol's delegation to the wyd in rome more than 10 years ago.  it's amazing, and disheartening.  it may be their chance in a lifetime, but this chance isn't really well worth the risk and the added insult we inflict on ourselves as a people.

Foods That Cause Flatulence

Foods that can cause flatulence (gas) in some people may not produce flatulence in others. It all depends on the amount and type of bacteria each person has in the large intestine. Gas producing foods may not need to be eliminated completely, unless you have problems of food intolerance (or food sensitivity), sometimes eating smaller amounts will help to reduce flatulence.

Broccoli, brussels sprouts

Asparagus, carrots

Apricots, raisins

Cauliflower, radishes

Bananas, prunes

Sauerkraut

Pan fried or deep fried foods

Rich cream sauces and gravies

Eggplant

Bran, nuts, popcorn

Tuna

Cabbage, celery, cucumbers

Prune juice

Kohlrabi, rutabaga, turnips

Fizzy medicine

Garlic, leeks and some seeds such as fennel, sunflower and poppy all produce a lot of gas in the colon.

Sodas and other carbonated beverages

Beer causes belching because it produces gas (carbon dioxide) in the stomach. It produces smelly hydrogen sulfide in some people.

Fatty meats, fatty foods can delay stomach emptying and cause bloating and discomfort, but not necessarily too much gas.

Legumes (very gassy) (all types) especially dried beans and peas, baked beans, soy beans, lima beans. Beans pass through the small intestine and arrive in the large intestine undigested which causes flatulence (gas) to occur, also, beans contain more indigestible carbohydrates than most foods.

Raffinose is a sugar found in mushrooms, beans and in smaller amounts in some vegetables and grains. The human body lacks the enzyme called alpha-galactosidase to digest this sugar, so it ends up in the large intestine undigested which causes flatulence (gas) to occur.

Fructose is naturally present in onions (very gassy), artichokes, pears, and wheat. It is also used as a sweetener in some soft drinks and fruit drinks.

Lactose is the natural sugar found in milk (very gassy), cheese (very gassy) and ice cream (very gassy), and processed foods, such as bread, cereal (somewhat gassy), and salad dressing.

Sorbitol is a sugar (which humans can't break down) found naturally in fruits, including apples, pears, peaches, and prunes. It is also used as an artificial sweetener in many dietetic foods and sugar free candies and gums.

Most starches, including potatoes, corn, noodles and wheat and wheat products including, pastries, bagels, pretzels

Q: My older female dog has begun to eat her poop and we cannot figure out the cause. She gets the same amount of dog food that she always has. Why is this happening?

A: There comes a time in every dog owner’s life when poop dominates the conversation. Welcome to not-so-nice aspects of dog ownership. While my dog Lulu does not share your pet’s particular problem, she has taken extreme measures to hide evidence of “accidents” every now and then. With such a strong sense of smell, she still seems to forget that poop leaves an odor.

Since your little poop eater leaves the crime scene squeaky clean, she may have a condition called coprophagia.

“Unfortunately this is a topic that is brought up quite often,” says Dr. Arhonda Johnson, owner of The Ark Animal Hospital in Atlanta. In most cases, this problem is behavioral and stems from curious hounds exploring the environment and all it has to offer. (Dogs don’t exactly have discriminating taste.)

Sites like Amazon.com are flooded with products such as For-Bid or other supplements that make a dog’s poop “unpalatable” â€" now that’s an oxymoron. Customer reviews tend to vary, and many of the products require continued use to reap the benefits. Also, these supplements fail to address the core problem, which Johnson notes could be an underlying health issue.

If your pet participates in coprophagia, here are a few common causes to consider:

Nutritional deficiency: “You are feeding her the same amount of food, but are you feeding her the same type of food?” Johnson asks. “If so, she might have intestinal parasites that are robbing her of the nutrition she is consuming. Tapeworms, which are transmitted by fleas, are big nutrition robbers.” A visit with the vet will help determine whether parasites are behind your dog’s unfortunate pastime.

Boredom: Idle minds breed mischief. Johnson says that your dog may be acting out of sheer boredom. If that’s the case, it may be time to monitor her outdoor privileges.

Curiosity: It’s new, it’s different and it smells interesting. What’s not to like? Dogs, particularly puppies, are prone to coprophagia. Use a gentle hand to steer them in a different direction.

It’s there: Be sure to clean the area thoroughly after your pet’s potty time. It also may be time to invest in a good pooper scooper. “The best prevention is cleanup,” Johnson says.

AFP/File â€" A Somali coastguard is seen here during a recent patrol.
#60065

Quote from: hubag bohol on April 18, 2011, 08:34:57 AM
On Friday, Hassan Farah said pirates in stronghold of Haradhere in Somalia had taken a collective decision not to release the Indian crew members.

"We decided to keep the Indian because India is holding our colleagues," Farah said. "We released the other crew members who sailed away from our coast. We will keep these Indians until the Indians release our colleagues."

Puri called the pirates' action "unprecedented," and said that it wasn't immediately clear why the pirates acted as they did.

"We are still trying to ascertain why that happened. We kept our side of the bargain. We don't know why they weren't released. This is an unprecedented situation. In the past they have always kept their word," Puri said.

While Puri did not reveal the amount of ransom paid, pirates are receiving an average of $5 million to release ships and crew, and a ransom in that ballpark was believed to have been paid on Friday.

Friday's pirate action marks a major departure from the standard business model of release-for-ransom and could complicate international military efforts against the piracy trade.

This departure will indeed complicate matters; on the other hand, it could provide greater impetus for the international community to put an end to this scourge.

By MUNEEZA NAQVI, Associate Press Muneeza Naqvi, Associate Press â€" Sat Apr 16, 5:12 am ET

NEW DELHI â€" The owners of a hijacked ship said Saturday that they were perplexed by the continuing detention of some of their crew members by Somali pirates despite their paying a multimillion-dollar ransom.

Pirates released the ship and some of the crew on Friday. But a Somali pirate told The Associated Press afterward that the Indian crew members' hostage ordeal is being prolonged in retaliation for the arrests of more than 100 Somali pirates by the Indian Navy.

However, the ship owners said Saturday that all the crew members of the Asphalt Venture were Indian â€" not just the seven still being held.

All 15 crew members, held hostage after September's attack, were Indian, Sunil Puri, a New Delhi-based spokesman for Interglobal, a United Arab Emirates-based company that owns the ship, told the AP.

The Indian navy has seized around 120 pirates, mostly from Somalia, over the past few months. Last month the Indian navy captured 61 pirates when they attacked a naval ship. Indian warships have been escorting merchant ships as part of international anti-piracy surveillance in the Indian Ocean area since 2008.

Commander P.V.S. Satish, a spokesman for the Indian navy, said Saturday that they were yet to receive any official details of Friday's exchange with the pirates.

What she says: “This feels good, but we really shouldn’t.”
What she means: “I want you, bad, but don’t want to get burned.”
Why she says it: The night is winding down, and it’s time to decide whether she should hold ‘em, fold ‘em, or soldier on into the morning light with you. So if your date isn’t telling you a flat-out “No,” “I don’t want to,” or “I don’t like you that way,” chances are she really does like you â€" and want you â€" that way. She’d just rather wait a few weeks or months until she knows you’re not a love-’em-and-leave-’em type. “It’s possible she’s been in the position before of becoming intimate with a man and wanting to hear from him and then not hearing from him â€" and she doesn’t want to make that mistake again,” says Wolf. So if you’re a guy who really does want the relationship to go further (be honest now), it’s worth telling her so to see if she’ll change her mind.

What she says: “So, what have you been up to?”
What she means: “Why haven’t you called me? Are you seeing someone else?”
Why she says it: If we haven’t talked to you in a few weeks and then you suddenly start calling again, all we want to know is, What the heck took you so long? But because we want you to think we’re laid-back “Hey, whatever” women, all we dare squeeze out is a general inquiry. “I don’t want him to know I care,” says Emilie Giroud Capet. Our biggest fear? That you’ve been calling other women instead of us. Whether that’s the case or not, you’re best off filling in your missing weeks with very unromantic things. “I’m hoping he’ll tell me he’s been working really hard,” says Emilie, “or better, that he’s been really sick.”

What she says: “If you want to have a guy’s night, go ahead, fine.”
What she means: “I really, really don’t want you to go. And if you do, I’m going to be upset.”
Why she says it: It seemed innocuous enough; you asked her if she’d mind rescheduling your romantic night in so you could go out with the guys. She’s given you the green light. So what’s the red flag in that statement? The word “fine.” See, when a woman says something is fine, it’s decidedly not. “A woman will say it’s fine for him to go without her because she doesn’t want to get in a fight about it, even though deep down, she doesn’t want him to go without her,” says Wolf. Another phrase women often use to clue you into their displeasure: “If you like.” As in, “Sure, you can go out with the guys tonight, if you like.” That’s a pretty clear sign that while you may like it, she sure won’t. Either way, feel free to play dumb and go out with your buddies â€" just be ready to accept the consequences when you return.

What she says: “So, tell me about Diane.”
What she means: “Should I be threatened by Diane?”
Why she says it: When a man brings up another female’s name in the midst of a story, a woman’s internal panic button is pressed â€" she fears that you’re talking about her because you’re secretly attracted to her. So until you make it clear you wouldn’t touch Diane with a ten-foot pole, our insecurities will lead us to assume she’s a wasp-waisted blonde who laughs at your jokes â€" and you’d love to be her boyfriend. So if Diane is attractive and available, please don’t say, “She’s really cool.” Instead, try, “Diane’s just someone I work with. Wow, she can be annoying sometimes. Some guys at the office are drawn to her but I don’t get it; she’s not all that.”

What she says: “I love the way you smell.”
What she means: “I love you, but I don’t dare tell you I love you before you tell me you love me.”
Why she says it: “I just told the guy I’ve been dating for three weeks that I loved the way he smelled,” says Lili De Monseignat, “but it’s more him that I love than his smell.” Then why hold back? Because women know that telling a guy we love him before he tells us could be too much for him to handle. “It’s too soon to tell him I love him, because he’ll freak out and run away!” says Lili. But if you want to be loved, perk your ears up for the word itself. “I love your dog,” “I love your apartment,” “I love the way you dress,” and “I love that you love Indian food” are all signs that something big is bubbling underneath that little heart of hers. In other words, gentlemen, please be gentle.

If you’ve ever spoken to a woman, it’s fair to say you’ve been confused by one. Yes doesn’t always mean yes, no doesn’t always mean no, and most of us have once in our lives even admitted, “Well, I may have said that, but I didn’t mean it.” What’s with all the mixed messages? “Women communicate by giving subtle suggestions instead of being literal, so we can check for positive reinforcement before we continue. We want to be careful about the impact we have on the other person,” explains Sharyn Wolf, CSW, a psychotherapist in New York City. But while figuring out what women really want can be difficult, it’s not impossible. So follow this guide to “girl-speak.” These are some of the things you might hear a woman say as you meet, date and woo her â€" and the code for reading between the lines.

What she says: “You’re really sweet, but I have a boyfriend.”
What she means: “You’re really sweet, but I definitely don’t want to date you.”
Why she says it: It’s a classic weekend night scene, somewhere in public. You see her sitting by herself and figure it’s as good a time as any to make a move. And it’s all going so well â€" she’s smiling, she’s answering your questions â€" until she drops the bomb that she has a boyfriend. Now, she may be telling the truth. But more likely this “boyfriend” is merely a ploy to get you to back off fast. “I use that line all the time; it really works without hurting a guy’s feelings too much,” says Claire McKimmie. “It shows immediately that there’s nothing more to say.”

What she says: “Why don’t I take your number and I’ll call you?”
What she means: “There’s no way I’m giving you my number, so why don’t I take yours?”
Why she says it: Even in this day and age, most women like to be pursued, so if we really like you, we’ll happily hand over our digits and wait for you to call. Pretty much the only time we’ll ask for your number is â€" sorry â€" when we want to keep the ball in our court and, well, never see you again. Other not-so-great responses: “Why don’t you email me instead,” “You can get my number through our mutual friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend Marcy” or “I’m listed.” Trust us, if she likes you, she’ll make it easy for you to call.

What she says: “Oh, sorry, I already have weekend plans.”
What she means: “I don’t necessarily have weekend plans, but you’re calling so last-minute I’d feel like a loser if I admitted I was free and took you up on your offer.”
Why she says it: As much as we all say that The Rules is an outdated tome that brews trouble between the genders, there are still some things we can’t let go of. And one of them is that we don’t want to accept plans with you last-minute, because we don’t want you to think we’re that easy to catch. “If a guy waits until Friday to ask me out on Saturday, I’ll probably say no,” says Claire Arnaud. “He has to work for it. And if he doesn’t have the patience to call back next week, too bad, that’s his loss.”

Brave crew

The daring teams on board the two balangays are the same people comprising the Philippine Mount Everest Team. These are former Department of Transportation and Communication Undersecretary Art Valdez, and Leo Oracion and Pastor Emata, the first and second Filipinos to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

They were also joined by female Everest conquerors Janet Belarmino-Sardena, Carina Dayondon, Noelle Wenceslao, as well as Fred Jamili (another Everest team member) and Ted Esquerra of the Philippine Coast Guard.

Other Balangay crew members Daniel Calo, Lemzar John Manginsay, Daniel Dominic Calo, Samuel Thomas Raypon, Eugene Boco and Billy Jack Bahi-an--all from Butuan--are proud to have been part of the team. They were flanked by their townmates in a festive welcoming ceremony in Butuan City Friday morning.

Fulfilling and harrowing

Amid the ethnic dances and the pulsating beat of drums and gongs, they relished their experiences at sea. Masawa Hong Butuan's Eugene Boco described the journey as both fulfilling and harrowing.

"Fulfilling kay naka uli mi tanan nga buhi, proud pud ang mga Pinoy sa ubang nasud kay Pilipino lang ang nakahimog libot sa Southeast Asia (It is fulfilling because we were able to come home alive. I also feel proud about being a Filipino. Only the Filipinos are able to travel to all of southeast Asia this way)," said Boco.

While the Voyage of the Balangay was intended to celebrate the rich history of our seafaring forefathers, it also brought out a time-tested Filipino cultural trait---teamwork. The Balangay crew shared that never has the bayanihan spirit been more alive in contemporary time than when they took the helm of the Balangay.

And how did Butuan figure in this historical event? An original balangay was discovered in the city in 1976. Believed to have been made sometime 1245 A.D., it was used as the model in building the workhorses of the present day's Voyage of the Balangay. -- With reports from Charmaine Awitan and Richmond Hinayon

MANILA, Philippines - It was a bittersweet conclusion to one adventurous voyage in the high seas. For the crew of the Voyage of the Balangay, it was a sense of fulfillment and an overwhelming urge to be with their family and loved ones as their 5-month journey came to an end.

The brave Filipinos on board steered the balangays through southeast Asia's most treacherous seas, often under the mercy of unpredictable tropical skies.

The two vessels, Masawa Hong Butuan and Sama Tawi Tawi have arrived in Butuan City's shores on January 31, 2011. But due to bad weather and the floods, culminating ceremonies for the Voyage of the Balangay and its heroes were moved to February 4, 2011.

Masawa Hong Butuan and Sama Tawi Tawi are replicas of the balangay, an early form of boat used by early seafaring Filipinos.

The Voyage of the Balangay first sailed throughout the archipelago, a journey that was rough sailing. A string of weather disturbances hounded the balangays' domestic hops. But the crew was determined to follow its local and southeast Asian course, and successfully traversed through Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore and Vietnam.

'Pilapil played dead to survive'
By Non Alquitran (The Philippine Star) Updated April 18, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines -  The doctor of veteran actress Pilar Pilapil said she played dead to survive her ordeal at the hands of her assailants during a carjacking incident in Marikina City last Thursday.

Dr. Raymond Resurreccion of Medical City said Pilapil suffered multiple stab wounds, one of them life threatening.

Resurreccion told a press briefing yesterday at the Medical City in Pasig where Pilapil is confined, that the actress’s presence of mind â€" playing dead and seeking immediate medical help â€" managed to save the day for her.

He said the actress was stabbed in the neck, face, arms and the left armpit, hitting her lungs, which caused the vital organ to partially collapse.

Resurreccion stressed that Pilapil was coherent at the time she was rushed to the hospital.

The doctor said Pilapil is now in stable condition and could be discharged from the hospital anytime this week.

Chief Superintendent Samuel Pagdilao Jr., director of the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and head of Task Force Pilar, said investigators still have no update on the whereabouts of Pilapil’s niece Rosel Jakosalem Penas and the gold Kia Sedan car that were both taken by the two male suspects believed to be carjackers.

At the time of the incident Penas was driving the vehicle with Pilapil as her passenger and they were on their way to meet somebody at the Riverbanks in Marikina City.

Pilapil’s brother Leo, a kagawad of Barangay Poblacion in Liloan, Cebu, told reporters that the car was moving slowly on the way to the Riverbanks when the attackers suddenly opened the unlocked doors of the car and barged into the back seat of the vehicle.

Police investigators erroneously made an initial report that the victims’ car was parked at the Riverbanks Center in Marikina.

Ching Maipid, advertising and public relations manager of Riverbanks Center, vehemently denied that the victims’ Kia car was parked at the Riverbanks Center based on initial news reports.

Maipid said a report from the center’s security unit would prove that there was no altercation at the Riverbanks last April 14.

MANILA, Philippines -  A group of Filipinas and their children who were repatriated from Japan after the Philippine government adopted a policy for Filipinos living within the 100-kilometer radius of the Fukushima power plant yesterday arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2.

Twenty-five of the 44 were minors. The Philippine embassy repatriation team in Tokyo fetched them from Fukushima City on April 16. From there they were brought to Narita, while embassy staff arranged for their overnight stay.

Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel Lopez, who arrived with the group, said that some 2,000 Filipinos live within the 100-kilometer radius of the nuclear power plant and most of them are long-term residents in the area. They are spouses and children of Japanese nationals.

The Philippines made possible the repatriation policy in line with its contingency plan and the Department of Foreign Affairs’ (DFA) mandate of promoting the welfare of Filipino nationals abroad.

Marianne Shike, 44, and her six-year-old son Shikesota were among those who arrived. She said her husband told her to go back to the Philippines for the meantime because he was afraid for their safety.

Evangeline Machikachi, 37, who is married to a Japanese club owner, brought her two kids with her after her husband decided to send her back home. She said they will stay here for two months and will go back to Japan if the situation becomes stable.

But the siren song of liquor-tax revenue proved too tempting for Stalin, who lifted the ban to support the communist autocracy. “What is better, the yoke of foreign capitalism, or the sale of vodka?” he said. “Naturally, we will opt for vodka.”

Vodka revenues even played a role in the collapse of the Soviet state. In 1985, Mikhail S. Gorbachev restricted vodka sales to get Russian workers back to the assembly line; because vodka taxes provided a full quarter of the entire Soviet budget, the result was a substantial drop in government revenues. The Kremlin tried to patch the budget hole by printing more money, which worsened the hyperinflation that hastened the downfall of the communist state.

To his credit, Mr. Medvedev seems to grasp the pitfalls of trying to tax an entrenched culture of drinking out of existence, and he favors incremental, realistic policies like public-service messages and advertising restrictions rather than the bombastic and often hollow policy pronouncements of his predecessors.

Yet the proposed quadrupling of vodka taxes now threatens to undo this gradual progress, and return to not only the autocratic timbre of policymaking, but also the traditional harnessing of state finances to the vodka bottle. It will be hard to avoid the allure of maintaining, or even increasing, the estimated $11.2 billion in extra revenue that the proposed taxes will bring in.

Is the Kremlin poised to again stumble into this eternal liquor trap? It definitely seems so: in the fall of 2010 Russia’s finance minister, Aleksei L. Kudrin, told reporters that the best thing that his fellow citizens could do to help the country’s flaccid national economy was to smoke and drink more, thereby paying more in taxes.

“Those who drink,” Mr. Kudrin said, “are giving more to help solve social problems such as boosting demographics, developing other social services and upholding birth rates.”

Not only will the government be tempted to dial back its anti-drinking campaigns to preserve its liquor tax revenues, but the higher prices for legal alcohol â€" from about $3.50 for a half-liter bottle today to $14 â€" will, if experience holds true, drive Russians to drink dangerous and unregulated homebrews, as well as poisonous surrogates like eau de cologne, shoe polish and even jet fuel. Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin recently based his opposition to the tax increase on precisely these past lessons.

Yet if Mr. Putin and Mr. Medvedev are to invoke the lessons of the past in dealing with Russia’s alcohol epidemic, they need to look more broadly at the dubious historical role of alcohol as a pillar of state finance. The only real solutions entail significant increases in public-health spending, rehabilitation programs, youth awareness campaigns and stricter advertising limits, as well as incremental rather than radical changes to pricing and availability.

Even then, the problem will take decades to solve. Most important, the Kremlin should take the first step to its own recovery and admit that it too has an alcohol problem, and not make the health of Russian finances dependent on the misery of its people.

Mark Lawrence Schrad, an assistant professor of political science at Villanova University, is the author of “The Political Power of Bad Ideas: Networks, Institutions and the Global Prohibition Wave.”

European Union EU / Moscow's Drinking Problem

By MARK LAWRENCE SCHRAD
Published: April 16, 2011

Villanova, Pa.

IN an effort to reduce both its sky-high alcoholism rate and its budget gap, Russia recently announced plans to quadruple the tax on the country’s eternal vice, vodka, over the next three years.

But while the move might be well intentioned, the long history of liquor taxation in Russia exposes a critical obstacle in the path of any anti-drinking campaign: the Kremlin’s own addiction to liquor revenues, which has derailed every previous effort to wean Russians from their tipple.

Russians consume about 18 liters of pure alcohol per person a year, more than twice the internationally recommended limit, a rate that President Dmitri A. Medvedev has called a “natural disaster.” Thanks in part to lifelong heavy drinking, the life expectancy for the average Russian man is now about 60 years, just below that of Haiti. Alcohol poisoning alone kills 40,000 Russians a year (compared with about 300 in the United States), and alcohol plays a role in more than half of all premature deaths.

Rampant alcoholism is nothing new, and Russian governments since the Middle Ages have introduced liquor taxes to reduce drinking rates.

But in almost every case, the public-health goal has been undermined by the state’s efforts to increase tax revenue. In Russia, the demand for vodka persists even when prices go up, so the state has an ever-present temptation to raise taxes and fill the treasury under the political cloak of making vodka more dear. Yet government after government has taken the following step of then promoting drinking to produce more revenue.

In 1591, for example, the English ambassador Giles Fletcher lamented that Ivan the Terrible encouraged his subjects to drink their last kopecks away in state-owned taverns where “none may call them forth whatsoever cause there be, because he hindereth the emperor’s revenue.”

Later, the ideological godfather of the Russian Revolution, Nikolai Chernyshevsky, denounced the state’s abdication of its responsibilities of “promoting national honor, the moral welfare of the nation, justice and fairness,” all of which he argued had been sacrificed to a system of hefty vodka taxes. “The only reason for its existence is monetary,” he complained. “Its sole purpose and concern is money, money, money.”

Though he was exiled to Siberia for this sort of criticism, Chernyshevsky’s argument was sustained by his revolutionary disciple, Lenin, who banned vodka during the early years of the Soviet Union.
