"He can put us all in jail," Ramon Arguelles, archbishop of Lipa, south of Manila, told reporters, adding Aquino sounded like the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who also threatened groups calling for civil disobedience during his regime.

A senior Roman Catholic bishop on Friday compared Philippine President Benigno Aquino to the ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos, in an escalating war of words over a controversial bill promoting artificial contraception.

The plan before Congress has put Aquino on a collision course with the country's powerful Catholic church leaders, who this week walked out of talks on the Reproductive Health bill.

Anti-RH groups supported the bishops and stepped up pressure against Aquino, calling for a widespread civil disobedience campaign, including non-payment of taxes.

"Not to pay taxes, I will be surprised if somebody will say that publicly because if I am not mistaken, that's a serious criminal offence," Aquino told reporters on Friday.

"I think sedition will be the charge that will be filed for your not doing your civic obligation."

Aquino's latest statement in the battle over the bill, which includes measures to promote sex education and the use of artificial contraceptives, immediately drew criticism from Catholic bishops, who have blocked similar measures since the 1990s.

"He can put us all in jail," Ramon Arguelles, archbishop of Lipa, south of Manila, told reporters, adding Aquino sounded like the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who also threatened groups calling for civil disobedience during his regime.

"We are willing to pay the price to save the unborn from modern Herods and save the executioners from the grasp of the evil one."

Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, former head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said the government must consider the moral aspect of the issue.

"In the end, we must obey God and not man," he added.

The Catholic church is a powerful political force in the Philippines, playing a key role in the overthrow of two presidents, including Marcos, during the past 25 years, and politicians generally avoid picking fights with the clergy.

The president's mother, democracy heroine Corazon Aquino, herself called for a campaign of civil disobedience against Marcos after she said he stole her election victory in 1986.

The allegations of poll fraud helped spark a popular revolt that toppled Marcos's 20-year rule and swept Cory Aquino to power.

Aquino said his government would prioritize the passage of a reproductive health bill in Congress as a tool to cut poverty in the poor but resource-rich Southeast Asian state.

Aquino pledged last month to push for the enactment of the reproductive health bill in Congress in a bid to lower maternal death in the Philippines, even at the risk of excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church.

The bishops say some forms of contraceptives are tantamount to abortion, which is illegal in the Philippines. About 80 percent of the country's 94 million people are Catholics. â€" Reuters

Pedro Martin Ureta, an Argentine farmer from General Levalle, has used 7,000 cypress and eucalyptus trees to create a giant guitar in memory of his late wife, Graciela.

Seeing this incredible design for the first time, I bet the first thing that comes to mind is “Photoshop”, but this one’s for real, folks. 70-year-old Ureta embedded this carefully planned design into his farm many years ago, and maintains it in honor of his wife, Graciela Yraizoz, who died in 1977, when she was only 25.

Most of the guitar, including the body and star-shaped hole were designed using cypress trees, and for the strings, Mr. Ureta used the bluish tones of eucalyptus trees. But planting and ensuring the saplings grew in peace was even tougher than planting them in the right spots. Hares and guinea pigs ravaged the area, and Ureta was just about to give up when he got the bright idea to use scrap metal and place protective sleeves around the young trees.

Believe it or not, Pedro Martin Ureta has never seen his incredible creation from the sky, except in photographs, because he is afraid of flying.

Ting Mong â€" Cambodia’s Creepy Scarecrows

If you ask me, common scarecrows are creepy enough, but the Cambodian Ting Mong carry real firearms and instead of birds they scare off evil spirits.

Scarecrows usually belong in  the fields, protecting villagers’ crops, but in some Cambodian villages you’ll see them in front of houses, by the gate, or on garden paths, and you can bet they’re not there to scare some man-eating birds. Ting Mong are a part of old Khmer culture, and even though Budhism came to Cambodia thousands of years ago, there are still some rural areas where people believe in spirits and their power over the living. These creepy “scarecrows” are actually guardians who ward off evil spirits and protect against disease and death.

Many Khmers believe a powerful force is embodied in the Ting Mong, which will keep spirits from coming inside, and to make them even more effective, they equip the life-size dolls with real or sculpted weapons. Some carry machetes and swords, while other carry modern weaponry like revolvers, AK47s and even sculpted bazookas. Even a bad-ass spirit wouldn’t dare approach a Ting Mong carrying this kind of firepower.

Wayok ra pud ning mga Samburu... :P
#57417
May 11, 2011|By David McKenzie, CNN

"Josephine" is 12 years old and several months pregnant.

She's a member of the Samburu tribe, living in a small village in a remote part of Isiolo in Kenya's Eastern Province. The pre-teen, whose identity is being protected, claims she had sex with a relative -- a rape sanctioned by the Samburu, through a practice called "beading."

Intricate beaded necklaces are a symbol of the Kenyan nation. But to young Samburu girls, the necklaces are a symbol not of national pride, but something much darker, that can lead to rape, unwanted pregnancies -- and even the deaths of newborns, according to activist Josephine Kulea and the Samburu tribe itself.

In "beading," a close family relative will approach a girl's parents with red Samburu beads and place the necklace around the girl's neck.

"Effectively he has booked her," says Kulea, a member of the Samburu herself. "It is like a (temporary) engagement, and he can then have sex with her." Girls are also "beaded" as an early marriage promise by non-relatives.

Some girls who are "beaded" are no more than 6 years old. They are the focus of Kulea's rescue mission, a trip to Isiolo she's been planning for weeks.

Samburu culture dictates that girls be engaged to a relative, she says, and they are allowed to have sex with him. But "they are not allowed to get pregnant and there is no preventative measures," she says. "At the end of the day, most girls get pregnant ... and these (infants) end up dying or being killed or being given away."

When they reach adulthood, Samburu girls will marry outside of their village, but taboo dictates the girls will never be able to marry if they keep their babies resulting from beading.

Some girls, she says, undergo a crude abortion before their pregnancy advances. Others hide their condition until it is too late for that. "They let them give birth, but only to kill these babies," Kulea says.

If the girls are lucky, their babies are given away to strangers. "Most of these girls are traumatized," Kulea says, and some get infections from the crude abortions.

Philip Lemantile, the father of 14-year-old Nasuto, says beading is aimed at stopping promiscuity among young girls.

"This is our culture," he says. "It is part of us. And we have been practicing it, and we accept that these girls should be beaded, and sometimes the girls just get pregnant."

Kulea calls that a bad cultural practice.

"For any change that comes by, we have to have a start," she says. "And this is the start."

But the start is traumatic for the Samburu, as the girls are taken away from their families and put in a shelter. Their babies are placed in orphanages.

Still, Kulea says, it's better than staying.

"I just felt that it is wrong," she says. "Something wrong is going on in my community. And that is where my passion began. And so I decided to help out the girls."

The twin bombings that killed 80 paramilitary recruits in Pakistan's northwest could deepen anti-U.S. sentiments in the country.

Coffins are taken to a hospital in Peshawar for victims of the suicide attack at a Frontier
Constabulary training center in Shabqadr in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province's Mohmad district.

By Alex Rodriguez, Los Angeles Times
May 13, 2011, 2:45 p.m.

Reporting from Peshawar, Pakistanâ€"Twin suicide bombings Friday that killed at least 80 paramilitary recruits in northwest Pakistan, in an attack that Taliban militants said was to avenge the killing of Osama bin Laden by U.S. commandos, could trigger new doubts among Pakistanis about the value of Islamabad's already rocky relationship with Washington.

The bombers targeted Frontier Constabulary recruits who had just completed six months of training and were boarding vans outside the training center's main gate to go on a 10-day leave, police and survivors said. The base is located in Shabqadar, a town near the edge of Mohmand, a tribal area in the northwest where Pakistani troops have struggled for years to rein in Pakistani Taliban militants.

The attack is Pakistan's deadliest yet this year, and the first major terrorist strike in the country since Bin Laden's killing.

Pakistanis have grown increasingly worried that they will bear the brunt of retaliatory attacks by militants angered by the May 2 killing of the Al Qaeda leader. U.S. Navy SEALs killed Bin Laden at the compound in the garrison city of Abbottabad where he had hidden for five years. Washington's decision to carry out the mission without Islamabad's knowledge or authorization angered many Pakistanis who saw the raid as a gross violation of their country's sovereignty.

Reacting to news of the suicide bombings, Bashir Bilour, a senior minister for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, questioned whether, despite the billions of dollars that Pakistan receives from Washington in civilian and military aid, the country was paying too heavy a price for its role as a U.S. ally.

"I don't care if someone is giving us money; we are not a purchasable commodity," Bilour told reporters in Peshawar. "We cannot be bought. We can live in hunger, but we won't compromise our national interests."

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was the first of a wave of planned strikes meant to avenge Bin Laden's killing, according to news agencies and Pakistani news media. The Pakistani Taliban, the country's homegrown insurgency, is closely allied with Al Qaeda and is one of several militant groups that have provided the terrorist network sanctuary in the volatile tribal region along the border with Afghanistan.

Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos (September 11, 1917 â€" September 28, 1989) was 10th President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He was a lawyer, member of the Philippine House of Representatives (1949â€"1959) and a member of the Philippine Senate (1959â€"1965). He was Senate President in 1963. He claimed to have led a guerrilla force called Ang Maharlika in northern Luzon during the Second World War, something much doubted however to be true. As Philippine president and strongman, his greatest achievement was in the fields of infrastructure development and international diplomacy. However, his administration was marred by massive authoritarian corruption, despotism, nepotism, political repression, and human rights violations. He benefited from a large personality cult in the Philippines during his regime. In 1983, his government was implicated in the assassination of his primary political opponent, Benigno Aquino, Jr.. The implication caused a chain of events, including a tainted presidential election that served as the catalyst for the People Power Revolution in February 1986 that led to his removal from power and eventual exile in Hawaii. It was later alleged that he and his wife Imelda Marcos had moved billions of dollars of embezzled public funds to the United States, Switzerland, and other countries, as well as into alleged corporations during his 20 years in power. -- http://ferdinand-marcos.co.tv/

About a third of all the food produced for human consumption each year or roughly 1.3 billion tons is lost or wasted, according to a new study commissioned by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Kon apilon og kwenta ang gikaon sa mga overweight nga wa na kinahanglana sa lawas (gani, makadaot na), pila ra kaha diay tawon ang properly consumed... :P
