Weird and Extreme / Bury Me in a Beer Can
May 12, 2008, 11:59:06 PM

It sounds like a bad Jeff Foxworthy joke, but it's not.

Some dude in Illinois wants to be buried in a giant can of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

And far be it from good sense or taste to deny Bill Bramanti what he wants.

beercan5.jpg
This tasty adult beverage doubles as a place of eternal rest! And makes Julienne fries!

He built himself a beer can casket and threw a party for his friends where he filled his silver sudsy place of eternal rest with ice and brewskis, The Associated Press.

"Why put such a great novelty piece up on a shelf in storage when you could use it only the way Bill Bramanti would use it?" said Bramanti's daughter, Cathy.

Though Bramanti, 67, says he doesn't plan on using his beer casket anytime soon, it's ready and waiting, should his keg be tapped.

Beer jokes are fun.

Skimpy prom dress lands teen in cuffs

HOUSTON â€" Marche Taylor’s prom night experience wasn’t what you would call the norm.

That’s because instead of a night of dancing and hanging out with friends, the Madison High School senior ended in a confrontation with school officials and her being escorted out in handcuffs. All because school officials said her dress was inappropriate for the school prom.

"I actually like the dress. Everybody else likes my dress,” Taylor said of her custom-made dress as she showed it off Friday afternoon.

Madison High's prom took place at the Sugar Land Marriot. But Taylor only got as far as the lobby because when she tried to enter the ballroom an official stopped her.

Courtesy photo

She was told her dress violated a school dress code.

"She shook her head, she was like you are not getting into this prom,” said Taylor. “We were arguing back and forth because I wanted to know why I can't get into my prom.”

Even after offering to provide more cover, Taylor was still denied access to the final soiree of the school year.

At that point, Taylor said she was furious. After all this was her senior prom. She argued if she couldn't get in, she wanted her money back.

Things got so bad, the next thing she knew, someone had called the police. Officers showed up, handcuffed her and escorted her out.

A photographer snapped a photo of Taylor in handcuffs, being led out of the hotel.

Not the prom memory Taylor was expecting

Madison High School Principal Aubrey Taylor said says the dress was inappropriate and violated the rules.

“It was revealing in such nature it was not appropriate for the prom,” said Taylor, who stood by the school official who denied Taylor access to the event.

And while she regrets how things turned out, Taylor thinks she had little choice.

"They didn't give me any options, but to go to jail or go home,” she said.

And she still loves her prom dress, even though in the end it will cost her dearly.

It may have been dubbed the "king fruit" in some places, but in Malaysia, this king has been banished -- at least in hotels.

Hotels in Kuala Lumpur prohibit guests from bringing durian, the fruit described as "tasting like heaven but smelling like hell" into their premises.

Signs in elevators constantly remind guests of the ban.

Anti-durian signs

At least two hotels in downtown KL -- Radius International and Replica Inn -- have signs inside their elevators about this.

"These fruits that emit pungent smell are PROHIBITED in the hotel. Thank you for helping us make REPLICA INN a pleasant place to stay for everyone," says the sign inside Replica's elevator. Aside from durian, this hotel has a ban on jackfruit.

Signs at Radius' elevators, meanwhile, may not be as explanatory as those in Replica's but lest guests forget, they still say the same message: "NO DURIANS."

Durians still sell

The anti-durian sign inside Replica, however, has not prevented vendors from selling the fruit several meters from the hotel along Changkat Bukit Bintang, near KL's central shopping district.

The cart, which sits on the sidewalk, attracts quite a few buyers throughout the day.

And you can't miss the odor. Because as they say, it's distinctively durian.

Malaysian hotels are not alone in the ban.

In Singapore, authorities in the city state's mass rapit transit strictly enforce the ban on smoking, eating, drinking and flammable goods and -- you guessed it -- durians in stations.

'Exquisite, unsurpassed'

While durian is native to Malaysia, neighboring Brunei and Indonesia, it is also grown in the Philippines, particularly in the southern island of Mindanao.

Fruits harvested from Mindanao orchards are sold at markets in major cities but are also shipped to specialty stores in Metro Manila that sell produce from the southern region.

But unlike in Malaysia and Singapore, hotels and major establishments in the Philippines do not ban durian within their premises.

Fruit's smell shocks travel writer

In 2003, travel writer Richard Sterling wrote in "The Traveling Curmudgeon: Irreverent Notes, Quotes, and Anecdotes on Dismal Destinations, Excess Baggage, the Full Upright Position, and Other Reasons Not to Go There" about how the durian barged into his senses -- literally -- from yards away.

"... its odor is best described as pig-s***, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away," he wrote.

And aside from the existing hotel ban on durian, Sterling wrote that the fruit is also prohibited in subways, airports and public transportation in Southeast Asia.

Praise for the smelly fruit

But while it has become infamous for its odor, the durian also had praises for its "new sensation" from British naturalist Alfred Russel who provided a much-quoted description of the flavor of the durian in "On the Bamboo and Durian of Borneo" in 1856.

"It produces no nausea or other bad effect, and the more you eat of it the less you feel inclined to stop. In fact, to eat Durians is a new sensation worth a voyage to the East to experience. ... as producing a food of the most exquisite flavour it is unsurpassed," Russel said.

The Kingwood teenager's story of decapitating a corpse and using the head to smoke marijuana was so outlandish that at first Houston Police Department senior police officer Jim Adkins did not believe it.

Yet, Kevin Wade Jones Jr., 17, appeared almost indifferent as he relayed the bizarre description of his and two friends' activities at an Humble area graveyard, Adkins said.

"I just doubted it because it's very morbid, and I couldn't see anybody doing something like this," Adkins said Thursday.

Not until police went to the home of another Kingwood 17-year-old, Matthew Richard Gonzalez, did the officer believe the tale.

"He regurgitated in his plate of food when I asked him about it," Adkins said. "So I knew there was some truth to the story."

Now, Jones, Gonzalez and a juvenile whose name has not been released are each charged with abuse of a corpse, a misdemeanor. All three were arrested Wednesday night.

Police said a fourth suspect is wanted for questioning.

Houston police believe the teens disturbed the grave of an 11-year-old boy who died in 1921.

The child was buried at an unmarked cemetery believed to be reserved for black veterans and their families, Adkins said.

Under the law, a person can be charged with abuse of a corpse simply by vandalizing, damaging or treating a gravesite offensively â€" even if the human remains buried there are not touched, Adkins said.

The child's skull has not been found. If recovered later, however, such a discovery will not change the charges filed against the three suspects, Adkins said.

The teens first came to police's attention during a vehicle burglary investigation. While being questioned, Jones told of desecrating the gravesite a month or two ago. Adkins said he believes the tale was intended to distract police from the vehicle break-in.

Jones claimed he and his friends used shovels to dig up the body and removed the corpse's head with a garden tool, Adkins said. Jones also revealed he and the other two boys took the severed head to the juvenile's home, where they used the skull as a "bong" to smoke marijuana, the officer said.

Police made three trips to the heavily wooded, snake-infested graveyard near the Eastex Freeway feeder road and FM 1960 before finding the disturbed grave several days ago.

"The grave was uncovered, and the headstone had been thrown off the grave and broken," Adkins said.

Because the grave is flooded with murky water from recent heavy rains, police have been unable to determine if the child's casket is still in the ground.

All three teens gave written and verbal confessions admitting they tried to dig up a body over a two-day period, Adkins said.

But the boys told conflicting stories about whether they actually severed the head â€" so police aren't sure if that gruesome detail really happened.

Even so, HPD is working closely with Humble police to try and find any surviving relatives of the child whose grave was disturbed. According to court papers, the grave belonged to Willie Simms.

"The ultimate goal will be to put this body back to rest," Adkins said.

Little is known about the graveyard. The Humble Bicentennial Museum could not confirm that it was reserved for black veterans, but Adkins said he observed "many, many headstones" for black soldiers killed during World War I and World War II.

The three boys, all home-schooled, have also been charged in connection with the vehicle break-in. Jones and the juvenile are charged with credit card abuse, while Gonzalez pleaded guilty to a charge of misdemeanor theft between $50 and $500.

Chronicle reporter Brian Rogers contributed.

Weird and Extreme / Penis Theft Panic Hits City
May 12, 2008, 01:36:45 AM

KINSHASA (Reuters) - Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

Reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur.

Rumors of penis theft began circulating last week in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo's sprawling capital of some 8 million inhabitants. They quickly dominated radio call-in shows, with listeners advised to beware of fellow passengers in communal taxis wearing gold rings.

Purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.

"You just have to be accused of that, and people come after you. We've had a number of attempted lynchings. ... You see them covered in marks after being beaten," Kinshasa's police chief, Jean-Dieudonne Oleko, told Reuters on Tuesday.

Police arrested the accused sorcerers and their victims in an effort to avoid the sort of bloodshed seen in Ghana a decade ago, when 12 suspected penis snatchers were beaten to death by angry mobs. The 27 men have since been released.

"I'm tempted to say it's one huge joke," Oleko said.

"But when you try to tell the victims that their penises are still there, they tell you that it's become tiny or that they've become impotent. To that I tell them, 'How do you know if you haven't gone home and tried it'," he said.

Some Kinshasa residents accuse a separatist sect from nearby Bas-Congo province of being behind the witchcraft in revenge for a recent government crackdown on its members.

"It's real. Just yesterday here, there was a man who was a victim. We saw. What was left was tiny," said 29-year-old Alain Kalala, who sells phone credits near a Kinshasa police station.

INQ reader's amazing snaps

By Paul Hales: Wednesday, 21 June 2006, 1:22 PM

AN INQUIRER READER attending a conference in Japan was sat just feet away from a laptop computer that suddenly exploded into flames, in what could have been a deadly accident.

Gaston, our astonished reader reports: "The damn thing was on fire and produced several explosions for more than five minutes".

Should you witness such an event, his advice is, "Don't try anything courageous/stupid, stay away, away, away!"

One Dell of a bang

"For the record, this is a Dell machine," notes Gaston. "It is only a matter of time until such an incident breaks out on a plane," he suggests.

Our witness managed to catch all the action in these amazing pictures.

"Fire extinguishers leave a mess on your suit and belongings; pack your stuff (if you can) and leave, leave, leave!" he advises.

We don't have any further details of the model of the computer in question. In light of the evidence, however, we'd suggest you avoid actually using a laptop on your lap. Ouch.

Lightning rally mars Ermita speech in PUP graduation rites

A lightning rally staged by five students interrupted the 2008 commencement exercise of the graduating batch of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) where Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita served as its guest of honor.

Reports said that while Ermita was delivering his speech, the five students who were among the 4, 879 graduates stood up, went up front and displayed their banners containing anti-Arroyo slogans.

The incident however did not stop Ermita from reading his speech, reports said.

"Akala ko wine-welcome ako. I don’t take these things very seriously siyempre because mayroon lang gusto magpatawag-pansin," he said.

The activist graduates said the move was their way to protest against extrajudicial killings and alleged violation of human rights carried out by the Arroyo administration.

"Hindi kami nambastos. Pero sa amin, isang malaking kabastusan na magsasalita siya ng puro kasinungalingan, puro kabalastugan ng kanyang amo sa harap ng mga estudyante at ng mga iskolar ng bayan," said one of the activists.

Meanwhile, acting PUP president Dr. Dante Guevarra, in a statement, said that although the university respects the exercise of freedoms and even encourages the practice of academic freedom, the act done by the five students was "inappropriate, untimely and uncalled for."

"It was however quite unfortunate that five of the almost 5000 graduates expressed their sentiments during the time that a formal and solemn academic function was being held-- during the Year-end commencement exercises. I see this act inappropriate, untimely and uncalled for," said Guevarra.

Guevarra immediately called for a joint emergency meeting with PUP academic and administrative councils after the graduation rites.

He said the academic staff, faculty, officials, students and members of the 2008 graduating class "abhor and reject" what the five students did during the commencement exercise.

"For this reason, we will call the attention of these true-blooded "iskolar ng bayan", talk with them and counsel them as regards the inappropriateness of their action," Guevarra’s statement said. With reports from Paul Henson, TV Patrol World

The wedding which has surprised many, turns out might was planned in advance.

Mariah Carey, Nick Carey and their 24 guests arrived via two private jets in the Bahamas on April 29th.

When they departed the planes, everyone came out with drinks in their hands and in a very "party" mode, says an eyewitnesses.

Upon arrival, Mariah and Nick headed to her $5 million home (now his too!) nearby while guests checked in to the hotel. The next day, Mariah and Nick were married at noon on the patio of her mansion overlooking the ocean.

How romantic!

An airport waitress tells Life & Style that "Mariah's assistant arrived on Eleuthera Island, just off the coast of Windermere, on April 27 to start making arrangements. The next day, a commercial jet arrived from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., carrying two huge tanks of live Maine lobsters."

They don't have lobster in the Bahamas????

Also flying in a few days ahead were Mimi's security team and several staff members to get the home ready in time.

Seems the last minute, surprise wedding was pretty well thought-out and planned for.

An insider adds, "Whenever Mariah travels, they set up for her beforehand. And it's no joke. If anything she needs or wants is missing, she'll be upset."

The flowers were also flown in on a private jet with the florist waiting to set up.

As for the cake, Mariah took care of that herself. She flew the cake over with her in her own private jet.

A source adds, "It was on the seat next to her. She wouldn't let anyone come near it or touch it."

Bridezilla!!!!!

We still wonder how long these two will last. They hardly even know each other!

congrats!! :)

Police: Kindergartner Brings Drugs To School

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro police said a 6-year-old brought drugs to school Monday.

Police found seven grams of marijuana and two grams of rock and powder cocaine in the child's pockets.

The student at Tom Joy Elementary School went to the teacher to show her what he found at home.

The teacher immediately took the student to the principal's office.

The child is developmentally challenged. There are nine students in his classroom. Police said no other students came into contact with the drugs. It didn't appear that the drugs were disturbed. The school was placed on lockdown until dismissal Monday afternoon.

"We believe that she didn't know that the school was aware that he had the drugs on him," said Sgt. Anna-Maria Williams. "So she was trying to get to the school to get them off of him."

The child's 27-year-old mother, Arthia Burrows received drug and child endangerment charges Monday. Police also are searching for her brother, who is wanted for arrest. He hasn't been charged yet.

Police said the curious 6-year-old gave them all the information they needed to take down a known drug house in East Nashville.

He told police he had his mother's "smokes."

"Our crime suppression unit had gotten a drug complaint on them, that this was place where people could go to buy marijuana and other drugs," Williams said. "So our crime suppression unit had been working on it, but hadn't had enough information to get inside. So, we got lucky as far as being able to get them at the same time to take the drugs off the child."

Police said Burrows does not have a criminal record.

The Tennessee Department of Children's Services removed five children from the home. Even though Metro Schools has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to drugs, the child will not be expelled because he was not aware he was bringing drugs to school.
