In 1977, a thief in Southampton, England, came up with a clever method of robbing the cash register at a local supermarket. After collecting a basketful of groceries, he approached the checkout area and placed a £10 note on the counter. The grocery clerk took the bill and opened the cash register, at which point the thief snatched the contents and ran off. It turned out to be a bad deal for the thief, since the till contained only £4.37 and the thief ended up losing £5.63.

Raw Foods Safety: Preparing Raw Food Is Easy Once You Know the Rules

Raw food is a lifeline to good health and eating a raw food diet can help you feel better. However you have to be aware that there are some dangers when it comes to a raw food diet. This danger comes in when it comes to the preparation of raw food. You have to know how to prepare it properly in order to not get food poisoning or other problems that can happen with a raw food diet. So what can you do to protect yourself and your family from this?

Practicing healthy hygiene is the answer to preparing raw food. Avoiding contamination is a good way to eat healthy and prepare your raw food for eating. Many vegetables need to be washed and rinsed before eating. The same holds true for fish. Keeping your hands clean when eating your meal or preparing it is the key to avoid contamination that can sometimes lead to salmonella and other problems. Make sure not to leave food out for more than two hours at a time. This can cause them to go bad very quickly. Here is another idea for you to protect yourself.

Using hydrogen peroxide in a food grade to clean your food can also be a way to keep infection at bay. You can also use alkaline water to clean your foods or use another type of water that has been run through an ozonator to wash and clean your food before consumption. You need to know where you are getting your food from. Getting it locally is the best idea for the freshest produce and raw food. You will know what you are getting. Also get the raw food from a grocer or produce producer that you trust.

Make sure that your tools are washed before preparing your raw foods. This is where the biggest problem comes in when it comes to food poisoning. Make sure that your board and knives are all cleaned up before you move to a different raw food. Proper storage of all raw foods is also advised so that you do not wind up making yourself or others sick. This keeps cross-contamination at bay and allows for more healthful eating. Make sure after food preparation that you wash your hands before you sit down to eat. This protects you.

Make sure that all foods are washed before eating and keep surfaces clean and free from cross-contamination. These are all basic rules of the road when it comes to protecting yourself and preparing raw food that is good for you. By protecting yourself and following these rules of the road, preparing raw food is not that hard to do. By following these suggestions you can prevent problems such as salmonella and other potentially hazardous problems. Eating raw food is a pleasure and should not be dangerous. Taking the dangers out and using common sense will allow you to enjoy a raw food diet. Without all the problems that can potentially surface in a diet like this. -- http://rawfoodsdietrecipesandbooks.info/

Raw foods diets are becoming increasingly popular, with many entertainers, athletes and nutritionists endorsing them and speaking of their benefits. But what are some of these benefits, and what is involved in switching over to a raw foods diet? Here are some of the top benefits that many experience within weeks of starting an organically based raw foods diet:

An increase in energy level. This is perhaps the most dramatic change for many starting on a raw foods diet. In fact, you may not even realize how high your energy level can be until you have tried this diet.

Loss of unwanted pounds. Although few go onto a raw foods diet with the main purpose being to lose weight, for many this is a wonderful additional benefit for many. In fact, it is very hard to gain weight while on a raw foods diet, so for those who are underweight, care should be taken while on this diet.

Improvement in health and physical appearance and function. One of the most dramatic changes many see is a change in complexion, eyes, and an increased immunity to illnesses such as colds and infections such as bladder and yeast infections. Others also see benefits in terms of digestive function, and find it helps better regulate bowel movements and decreases signs of indigestion.

Detoxification of the body. When you are eating an organic, raw and primarily vegan diet, you will be eliminating many of the pesticides, hormones and other chemicals commonly found in our foods. For this reason, many refer to a raw foods diet as a raw foods “detox” diet.

An improvement in your mental and emotional condition. Some claim that a raw foods diet can help combat signs of depression, while others notice an improvement in their ability to concentrate and their memory. -- http://rawfoodsdietrecipesandbooks.info/

USA and Canada / Grandma Bandit strikes again
May 25, 2011, 06:01:47 AM
By Alexis Stevens
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
4:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011

This suspect, described as a 50-to
60-year-old woman, is wanted for
the robbery of multiple drug stores.

Atlanta police are looking for the older woman accused of robbing four pharmacies in two weeks, Officer K.Y. Jones said. And the woman bears a striking resemblance to the one suspected in similar crimes in DeKalb County, right down to the black University of Georgia ball cap.

The woman, described as being about 5-feet-6 inches tall and weighing between 120 and 130 pounds, appears to be around 60 years old, police said. She wears sunglasses during the crimes and has puffy, swollen cheeks, according to surveillance pictures.

Her latest heist was Tuesday, when she allegedly robbed the Rite Aid pharmacy on Howell Mill Road just before 10 a.m., Jones said. The suspect was last seen driving a tan or gold Jeep Liberty, police said.

The same woman is also accused in similar crimes May 12, May 14 and Friday, Atlanta police said. A woman matching her description is accused of pointing a gun at employees at a pharmacy on North Druid Hills Road and demanding cash, DeKalb County police said last week.

Anyone with information regarding the woman's identity is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477. -- http://www.ajc.com/

PNoy orders zero casualty as 'Chedeng' nears PH
abs-cbnNEWS.com

Ondoy-like typhoon could miss Metro Manila, devastate Bicol

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III ordered government agencies to ensure that there will be zero casualty once tropical storm Chedeng packs enough energy to wallop the country.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Graciano Yumul told a press conference in Malacañang that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical, and Services Administration (PAGASA) is giving “every hour, on the hour updates” on the track of the storm that is expected to turn into a “typhoon” in the coming days.

“There are 3 components of a good forecast, however. One, it should be timely and reliable; two, there should be good communication; and three, an appropriate response by the community should be attained,” he said.

He noted that the last typhoon, Bebeng, destroyed billions of properties and claimed the lives of more than 30 not because of laxity on the part of the government but because of a slew of factors.

“Napakahirap tumawag ng mga kasama. When we had our press conference on a weekend, only 4 to 5 appeared…It’s also hard to announce the movement of the typhoon that time because some LGUs were awaiting Manny Pacquiao’s fight,” he said.

Yumul said “preparation” is paramount. “One’s safety is also one’s responsibility,” he said.

Like Ondoy

Based on the 11:00 a.m. report of the PAGASA, the tropical storm was seen 490 kilometers East of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Moving west northwest at 13 kph, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.

Storm signal 1 has been raised over Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon and the Samar Provinces.

Chedeng is estimated to bring rains measuring between 20 to 40 millimeters of rain, which is already “heavy” by definition. Add to this the interaction with the southwest monsoon, Chedeng could bring Ondoy-like rains, Yumul said.

“All the ingredients of the southwest monsoon are already there: the cloud formation and the pressure condition. We’re only now tracking the rain, which Chedeng will bring,” he said.

Ondoy-like destruction will be felt more in the western seaboard, including Samar and Bicol as well as Cagayan and Isabela, he said.

“All our model systems show Chedeng will not hit Manila, but it will track the same route as Bebeng 3 weeks ago,” he said.

Metro Manila will only be “extremely wet” starting Friday until Sunday, he added.

He said it is “rare” at this time that the storm will weaken but there are minimal chances it will become a “super-typhoon.” -- http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/

High School Students Accused Of Killing Chicken For Cookout
Posted: 12:51 pm EDT May 20, 2011Updated: 7:51 pm EDT May 20, 2011

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. -- Two Brooke High School students are accused of killing a chicken outside of a vocational classroom with the intentions of eating it at a cookout, the superintendent said.

NEWS9 received an email about the incident Thursday night, and Superintendent Kathy Kidder confirmed it happened.

Two male students, a senior and a junior, were involved, Kidder said. She said they were disciplined immediately. She said the extent of the students' punishment won't be known until the school board finished its investigation.

Kidder said the students had asked the principal if they could have a cookout earlier in the week and were told no. However, the students then went to the vocational director, who approved the cookout, unaware of the principal's decision.

Kidder said one of the students raises chickens at home and brought two live chickens to the school on Thursday. The students allegedly snuck out of class and cut the head off one chicken with a knife in a lawn outside of a vocational classroom, Kidder said. A teacher who was inside the classroom saw what happened and stopped the student before he slaughtered the second animal.

In a statement to school officials, the student said he intended on cooking it on a grill near the school.

"We have a very large cooker on wheels located behind the building," Kidder said. "It has been used in the past for celebrations. The cooker is gone. It was removed yesterday."

Kidder said other students saw the incident. She went to the school immediately after she was notified.

"I thought it was appalling. I was very angry. When I first heard it, I was sickened by it," she said. "I know some people get their chicken in that manner, but not as a spectacle."

She said the incident is troubling and unfortunate for the hundreds of other students who attend the school.

"This is two students out of 3,400 and unfortunately we have in our society people who want to make a news story out of everything," Kidder said.

The teacher of the class, whose name was not released, was not working on Friday pending the investigation, she said.

There were two knives involved. One was under repair in the classroom, and it was not clear where the other knife came from.

Brooke County residents like Scott Gallagher were talking about the incident. Gallagher said, "I think it could have been done in a more private setting. I think there is a place for that. Everybody eats chicken, but not everybody sees the chicken slaughtered."

Gabriel Arlia, of Follansbee, said, "I used to hold the chicken while my mother cut its head off. That's how we got chicken every Sunday."

Others, like Alice Brandon, of New Alexandria, Ohio, said, "That is so gross. I think that is so gross. I don't know where the parents were, but that it totally gross." -- http://www.wtov9.com/

DPWH turns over unfinished bridge to Bohol town
Manila Bulletin / March 23, 2008

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has finally turned over the kalabasa awardee unfinished Loboc jumbo bridge to the Municipal Government of Loboc.

Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado said DPWH Region 7 Director Josefino Rigor and Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan signed the memorandum of agreement (MoA) turning over the bridge to the municipality in the meantime that the department is still in the process of finding a solution to the technical problems concerning its construction.

Calipusan had been authorized by the Loboc Municipal Council to sign the MoA through Resolution No. 117 Series of 2005 while Rigor's authority came from DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. dated Jan. 8, 2008.

The MoA turns over in a temporary capacity to the municipality the possession, administration, supervision and control of the Loboc Bridge, to be used in activities that will redound to the benefit of the local residents, such as for tourism purposes.

It however specified that in conducting tourism-oriented or tourism-related activities on the bridge, the town shall exercise the diligence of a good father of a family to avoid any damage to the structure or cause any damage or injury to private persons.

To note, Aumentado, Calipusan and the First Consolidated Bank (FCB) through its chair Richard Uy plan to turn the bridge into a hanging garden and park available for open-air concerts and similar activities.

Aumentado provided the idea of a Loboc Bridge version of the Hanging Garden of Babylon that Architect Herman Torero, an active member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), translated into perspectives.

Uy said the bank will take charge of the funding initially pegged at around R2 million, while the municipality under Calipusan or his successor will oversee the operations of the garden and park.

The bank chair had commissioned Torero to prepare the perspective, insisting that the finish must blend with the church and belfry structures.

Aumentado lauded Uy and FCB for heeding the call of their corporate social responsibility to fund the improvement of the bridge.

The bank has an affinity for Loboc because its founder, the late Alfonso Uy who was Richard's father, was born in that town.

The MoA also specified that Loboc shall be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the bridge to prevent its deterioration for cause or causes attributable to human activities.

However, the agreement will be automatically terminated in the event that DPWH finds a solution to the design problem of the bridge project and will start construction of its unfinished portion. (June Blanco) -- http://findarticles.com/

Loboc, A Tale of a Bridge vs a Church

If you visit Bohol’s Chocolate Hills from Tagbilaran you will pass through Loboc. Even if you hadn’t planned on it I’m sure you will end up checking it out. We stopped there on the way through and again on the way back. It’s a pretty remarkable place for such a little town, and there are several reasons whyâ€"at least four that I can think of. But the initial reason is the first thing you’ll notice as you pull up to the center of town.

Have you ever seen something so bizarre, so surreal that you just HAD to have an explanation for it before you could go on with what you were originally doing? It probably feels that way for someone who sees a UFO or The Lochness Monster. Well, THAT is how I felt when we pulled up next to the ancient church in Loboc. The church was old, large and interesting, but that wasn’t what had my curiosity all abuzz, although it was certainly part of it.

No, what had my head cocked and my gaze locked was the hulk of a big old unfinished bridge looking like part of an abandoned movie set. Ever watch the movie “Speed” when the bus jumps across the unfinished chasm of an overpass? Or similarly in “The Blues Brothers” where the Nazis chasing Jake and Elroy go flying off the same kind of unfinished highway bridge? Well, that’s what’s sitting in Loboc, right in the middle of town. But, what makes it unreal is the bridge’s location.

The incomplete bridge comes from the direction of the Loboc River, which it crosses from way on high. This isn’t just a little bridge either; it’s substantial, made of concrete and reinforced with steel, and was obviously built as part of a major thoroughfare. What’s disturbing is that if the bridge is finished, the Loboc Church would have to be demolished, because the bridge stops directly across the street from the historic cathedral. Visually, the unfinished bridge is an open threat aimed directly at the church. So far, the church is holding its own against the menacing bridge’s bulk, but a question begs to be asked: What the heck is going on?

I got out of the car, stared up at the bridge, and while pointing at it started quizzing the guide about the monstrosity across the street from the beautiful church. I must have been a bit too obvious for her because she told me furtively, “Not here, we can talk when we get around the corner.”

So, I figured out that I wasn’t supposed to make a big deal out of the bridge and the way it just seemed to float unfinished in midair looking exactly like a giant waterless pier, at least not openly, so I pretended to ignore it as we walked to a garden park in front of the church. I felt foolish ignoring something so obvious, but I decided to play along. By then I was willing to do about anything to make sure my guide filled me in on “the story.” I knew it was going to be something weird and wacky and I was right.

Here’s the tale she told me. It seems unbelievable, but it makes sense if you live here long enough. There is a legend that there is gold buried under the old church. It’s the same ridiculous myth that the people in practically every province in the Philippines tell. Usually it’s a story about buried Japanese gold, but in this case it must be about Spanish treasure from the time when the friars first moved to Loboc in the early 1600s to escape marauding Muslims. That’s why the church exists in Loboc in the first place.

Some greedy person in a position of authority (sorry for being redundant there!) must have felt that they could use “Eminent Domain” as a way to force the demolition of the 400 year old landmark to get to the mythical gold. That’s all she would tell me and she spoke of it without looking at the bridge or acknowledging it, almost like she was briefed as part of her certification not to make a big deal out of it when tourists ask about the obvious eyesore right in the middle of Loboc.
