Joining the military sometimes means being away from family and friends, traveling to new and exotic places, or having the option to stay in the continental U.S.

For two Filipino-American service members, traveling to the Philippines for Exercise Balikatan 2012 brings them back to their roots.

U.S. Marine Lance Cpls. John L. Culilap, a field wireman with Combat Logistics Battalion 3, and Jed A. Delos-Reyes, a motor transportation operator with Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, were both born and raised in the Philippines.

For the exercise, they provide security at the camp at Crow Valley and help break down language barriers between Philippine and U.S. service members, allowing a wealth of knowledge, culture and understanding to flow through the camp like wildfire.

“I try to help out as much as I can,” Culilap said. “Marines want to know what food to try and where to go, while Filipinos ask about America for the most part. My superiors sometimes need me to translate with local drivers or shopkeepers, and I know enough of the language to get by.”

Both Marines moved to California from the Philippines when they were young. Their life stories are different, however, both are inspiring.

“My parents separated when I was 12 years old,” Delos-Reyes said. “My mother then married an American man, and we moved to Seaside, (Calif.). I had a hard time in school at first, and my English still isn’t perfect, but when I look back, coming to America was a good thing.”

Delos-Reyes hadn’t been back to the Philippines to see his family until December 2011. During his visit, he reconnected with friends, bought a house and held a birthday celebration for his niece. When he returned from leave, he found out he was going back again, but this time for Balikatan.

“I was so excited when I found out,” Delos-Reyes said. “I told all my family, and I’m hoping to see them when we go on liberty. Interacting with the people here in Crow Valley makes me feel like I’m back home.”

Today, the men are treated like celebrities by the people from the surrounding towns of Capas Tarlac and Barangay Santa. They get to indulge in the local cuisine, talk about the progress of their country and pass on what they’ve learned to their brothers and sisters in the Corps.

“I literally lived like this,” said Delos-Reyes as he looked around at the surrounding village that lacksindoor plumbing, electricity and paved roads. “It brings back memories and makes me want to give back as much as I can to the people here in the Philippines.”

When the Philippine Marines set up camp next to Camp Palacio, it really hit home on how much the Filipino-American Marines had changed since moving to the U.S. Culturally, everything from their housing to the way meals were prepared was different.

“I’m used to the way I did things (while living) in the Philippines, but we can really learn from each other since this is a foreign environment to many Americans,” said Culilap. “The (Philippine Marines) know how (difficult conditions are) here, and they can teach us a lot and learn from how we train for different countries. Filipinos can be one of the most hospitable people in the world, and I hope that the Marines get a sense of that while they’re here.”

Arleigh Burke Class (Aegis) Destroyer

The entire ship (except the two aluminium funnels) is constructed from steel, with vital areas protected by two layers of steel and 70t of Kevlar armour.

There is a platform for rearming and refuelling a LAMPS III SH-60B / F helicopter (with ASW capabilities), but no hangars, the ship is unable to house a helicopter of its own. This is the first US Navy class to be fitted out with anti-NBC warfare protection.

The Arleigh Burke Class destroyers are equipped with the Aegis combat system which integrates the ship's sensors and weapons systems to engage anti-ship missile threats.

The Aegis system has a federated architecture with four subsystems â€" AN / SPY-1 multifunction radar, command and decision system (CDS), Aegis display system (ADS) and the weapon control system (WCS). The CDS receives data from ship and external sensors via satellite communications and provides command, control and threat assessment. The WCS receives engagement instruction from the CDS, selects weapons and interfaces with the weapon fire control systems.

The latest Aegis upgrade, baseline 7.1, was certified by the USN in September 2005 onboard USS Pinkney (DDG 91). The upgrade includes a new radar, AN / SPY-1D(V), which has enhanced electronic countermeasures and more effective capability in littoral environments. Baseline 7.1 is based on COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) computer architecture. Trials of the upgrade in March 2003 included live firings of the ESSM.

Lockheed Martin is developing the Aegis ballistic missile defence (BMD) capability for the Aegis combat system to engage ballistic missiles with the SM-3 missile. 15 Arleigh Burke destroyers have been fitted with the Aegis BMD system, which provides the capability for long-range surveillance, tracking and engagement of short and medium-range ballistic missiles.

The ships are armed with 56 Raytheon Tomahawk cruise missiles, with a combination of land-attack (TLAM) missiles with a Tercom aided navigation system, and anti-ship missiles with inertial guidance. The Standard SM-2MR block 4 surface-to-air missiles with command / inertial guidance remain at the centre of the Aegis system. Both Tomahawk and Standard missiles are fired from two Lockheed Martin mk41 vertical launch systems.

There are also eight Boeing Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles and Lockheed Martin ASROC vertical launch anti-submarine systems, armed with the mk50 or mk46 torpedo. ASROC is launched from the mk41 VLS.

Arleigh Burke vessels are fitted with the evolved Sea Sparrow missile (ESSM), developed by Raytheon. ESSM is an advanced ship self-defence missile for use against anti-ship missiles.

Ticonderoga-Class Guided Missile Cruiser

27 Ticonderoga Class (CG 47 - CG 73) Aegis guided missile cruisers were built between 1983 and 1994 by Ingalls Shipbuilding at Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Bath Iron Works (a General Dynamics Company), Bath, Maine. Ingalls Shipbuilding is now part of Huntington Ingalls Industries. Northrop Grumman spun off its shipbuilding businesses into a new company, Huntington Ingalls, in March of 2011.

22 ships are operational, 11 in the US Navy Atlantic Fleet and 11 in the Pacific Fleet, two of which are based in Japan in the US Naval Forces Base at Yokosuka.
22 of the class (CG52 - CG73) are fitted with two mk 41 Vertical Launch Systems (VLS), each armed with eight Boeing / Raytheon Tomahawk cruise missiles. The first five ships (CG47 to CG51) are fitted with conventional twin launchers. The mk41 launchers are being upgraded with new Lockheed Martin AN/ALQ-70 computers and the ability to launch Evolved Seasparrow Missiles (ESSM).

The ships are armed with the Raytheon Standard Missile 2MR surface-to-air missile which uses command and inertial guidance and semi-active radar homing and has a range of 70km. 60 missiles are carried for each of the two mk 41 VLS. In November 2002, the Standard Missile SM-3, being developed by Raytheon, successfully intercepted a ballistic missile in space from USS Lake Erie (CG 70).

The SM-3 is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the earth's atmosphere and will form part of the US Navy's Sea-based Midcourse Defense (SMD). The missile has new GPS/INS (global positioning / inertial navigation) guidance and kinetic warhead. Raytheon began deliveries of the SM-3 in December 2004. Lockheed Martin has developed the Aegis ballistic missile defence (BMD) 3.0 capability for the Aegis combat system to engage ballistic missiles with the SM-3 missile.

The Philippines is a Major Non-Nato Mutual Defense Treaty Ally of the United States of America. The United States launched the largest naval invasion in human history to retake the Philippine Islands (1944) , then an American Protectorate, from Japanese Imperial Forces; landing the 3rd and 6th Armies and obliterated the Imperial Japanese 14th Area Army (a force of 336,000 Japanese soldiers). The United States committed some 200,000 men to retake the Philippines; sustaining 60,000 casualties to retake the Philippines.

The Seventh Fleet is the United States Navy's permanent forward projection force operating forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan, with units positioned near Japan and South Korea. It is a component force of the United States Pacific Fleet. At present, it is the largest of the forward-deployed U.S. fleets, with 60 to 70 ships, 300 aircraft and 40,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel.

The Third Commandment

Did I miss Mass on a Sunday or a holy day of obligation?

Did I fail to dress appropriately for Mass?

Have I, without sufficient reason, arrived at Mass so late that I failed to fulfill the Sunday or holy Day of obligation?

Did I allow myself to be distracted during Mass, by not paying attention, looking around out of curiosity, etc.?

Did I cause another to be distracted?

Have I performed any work or business activity that would inhibit the worship due to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, or the appropriate relaxation of mind and body, on a Sunday or a holy day of obligation?

Did I fail to generously help the Church in her necessities to the extent that I am able?

Did I fail to fast or abstain on a day prescribed by the Church?

The Second Commandment

Did I fail to try my best to fulfill the promises and resolutions that I made to God?

Did I take the name of God in vain? Did I make use of God's name mockingly, jokingly, angrily, or in any other irreverent manner?

Did I make use of the Blessed Virgin Mary's name or another saint's name mockingly, jokingly, angrily, or in any other irreverent manner?

Have I been a sponsor in Baptism or participate actively in other ceremonies outside the Catholic Church?

Did I tell a lie under oath?

Did I break (private or public) vows?

The First Commandment

Have I performed my duties toward God reluctantly or grudgingly?

Did I neglect my prayer life? Did I recite my usual prayers?

Did I receive Holy Communion in the state of mortal sin or without the necessary preparation?

Did I violate the one-hour Eucharistic fast?

Did I fail to mention some grave sin in my previous confessions?

Did I seriously believe in something superstitious or engage in a superstitious practice (palm-reading or fortune telling for instance)?

Did I seriously doubt a matter of Faith?

Did I put my faith in danger-without a good reason-by reading a book, pamphlet, or magazine that contains material contrary to Catholic faith or morals?

Did I endanger my faith by joining or attending meetings of organizations opposed to the Catholic faith (non-catholic services, the Communist Party, Freemasonry, "new age" cults, or other religions)? Did I take part in one of its activities?

Have I committed the sin of sacrilege (profanation of a sacred person, place or thing)?

"To those who have been far away from the sacrament of Reconciliation and forgiving love, I make this appeal: Come back to this source of grace; do not be afraid! Christ himself is waiting for you. He will heal you, and you will be at peace with God!"1

The basic requirement for a good Confession is to have the intention of returning to God like the Prodigal son and of acknowledging our sins with true sorrow before his representative, the priest.

ANSWER:

Marriage between a man and a woman was instituted by God with Adam and Eve. Genesis 2:24 states: "Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh."

In Matthew 19:4-5, Jesus reaffirms this: "He answered, ‘Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one’?"

Where in the Bible does it say that marriage is between a man and a woman?
#5650
ANSWER:

He didn't. Many mistakenly assume the Lord changed Saul's name to Paul sometime after Saul converted from Judaism to Christianity, which happened during his encounter with Christ on the Road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-19). Unlike the instance of Jesus changing Simon's name to Kepha (Gk. Petros) as a way of signifying the special role he would play in the Church (Mt 16:18, Jn 1:41-42), in Paul's case there was no name change.

Saul of Tarsus was born a Jew, "circumcised on the eight day, of the race of Israel, or the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrew parentage, in observance of the law a Pharisee" (Phil 3:5). The Hebrew name given him by his parents was Saul, but, because his father was a Roman citizen (and therefore Saul inherited Roman citizenship), Saul also had the Latin name Paul (Acts 16:37, 22:25-28), the custom of dual names being common in those days. Since he grew up in a strict Pharisee environment, the name Saul was by far the more appropriate name to go by. But after his conversion Saul determined to bring the gospel to the Gentiles, so he dusted off his Roman name and became known as Paul, a name Gentiles were accustomed to.

Adopting his Roman name was typical of Paul's missionary style. His method was to put people at their ease and to approach them with his message in a language and style they could relate to. We should take a cue from Paul as we engage in apologetics work. No, we don't need to adopt new names, but we should accommodate ourselves to our audiences (and we mean here audiences as small as one person). We want to speak to people in their own styles, so far as we can, and we want to address their particular concerns. We don't want to raise people's hackles before we even have a chance to raise issues.

As Paul explained,

Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the Jews I became a Jew to win over Jews; to those under the law I became like one under the law - though I myself am not under the law - to win over those under the law. To those outside the law I became like one outside the law. To the weak I became weak to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some. All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it. (1 Cor 9:19-23; see also 1 Cor 10:33, Rom 15:1)

Why did God change Saul's name to Paul?

Is it possible that having a sunny outlook on life can be good for your health? Plenty of self-help guides claim that positive thinking can improve wellbeing, but is there any scientific evidence for this?

A huge new study in the US found that optimists were less likely than pessimists to develop coronary heart disease (CHD) and less likely to die of any cause over the course of the eight-year trial. Hilary Tindle and colleagues looked at 97,253 postmenopausal women, all of whom were free of cancer and cardiovascular disease when they took personality tests at the start of the study.

When the researchers compared the most optimistic 25% of their subjects with the most pessimistic 25%, they found that out of every 10,000 optimists, 43 developed CHD and overall 46 died, while for every 10,000 pessimists there were 60 cases of CHD and 63 deaths overall. Women who scored highly for "cynical hostility" were also more likely to develop CHD or die. The study was published this week in Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association.

This isn't the first study to find a link between optimism and good health.

Psychologists distinguish two different kinds of optimism. "Dispositional optimism" is the general belief that good things will happen. On the other hand a person is said to have an optimistic "explanatory style" if they blame bad things on temporary, external factors; and a pessimistic explanatory style if they believe bad things happen because of their own fault or unchangeable, global factors.

One study, reported in 1988, looked at 99 Harvard graduates from the classes of 1942-1944, all of whom filled in questionnaires that determined their explanatory style at the age of 25. When doctors examined their physical health over the next 35 years, they found that those who were pessimistic when they left university were more likely to experience poor health between the ages of 45 and 60, taking into account their physical and mental health at 25.

A study in 2001 of 1,306 men found that those whose explanatory style was most optimistic were less than half as likely to develop coronary artery disease compared with those who were most pessimistic.

A Dutch study of 941 subjects aged 65-80, published in 2004, found that those of a pessimistic disposition were 55% more likely to die during the nine-year follow-up period, independent of other factors such as education, smoking and alcohol consumption. The effect was particularly strong in men.

A study in the US in 2006 looked at 6,958 students who had taken a psychological test when they enrolled at the University of North Carolina in the 1960s. Among the most pessimistic third of the subjects, the death rate over the next 40 years was 42 per cent higher than among the most optimistic third.

Dispositional optimism has also been linked with improved recovery rates after surgery and improved cancer survival rates.

We shouldn't leap to the conclusion that being optimistic makes people healthier. It could be that good health is what is making people optimistic in the first place, and not the other way around. Healthier people are certainly likely to be more optimistic, but studies have generally accounted for this and still found a positive result, so it doesn't seem to be the whole story. When subjects have been followed for several decades after the original questionnaire, we can be even more confident that the bad health wasn't there to begin with.

Another possibility is that optimists lead healthier lifestyles, as Dr Tindle points out. "In our study," she told me, "optimists tended to be slightly younger, more educated and wealthier, more physically active and closer to healthy body weight." But other studies have still found optimism to have a beneficial effect even after adjusting for known cardiovascular risk factors.

Although Dr Tindle stressed that her study could not identify the physiological link between optimism and health, she did suggest that optimists might have better ways of coping with stress. "This could mean not as much of a rise in blood pressure, stress hormones, or heart rate," she said.

Perhaps our genes could also be playing a role. It might be that the same genes that confer an optimistic disposition also predispose to good health.

To demonstrate a causal relationship between optimism and health, you'd need to do a randomised trial in which a group of pessimists was somehow turned into optimists, and then wait and see whether they fared any better than a control group.

As things stand, it's still unclear whether adopting a more positive outlook on life can reduce your likelihood of falling ill or dying. But it certainly won't hurt â€" and it might put a smile on your face. Who could argue with that?

Your health is affected by the way you think and view life.  The more positive you are, the healthier you can be.  While life can be pretty challenging at times, there will always be something that you can do to help lift up your burdens.  Remember that everything has an end, including difficult times.  If you learn how to be more optimistic and start actively improving your life, you can definitely get somewhere a lot betterâ€"and be a lot healthier.

Clearly, being a positive thinker has a lot of advantages.  If everyone can start being a little more positive, then the populace of the world can be generally a lot healthier.  However, it is also a reality that, being positive does not come easy.  Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to develop positivism and improve your overall health. If you are interested in learning them, here’s a quick list:

1. Decide to be optimisticâ€" Resolve within you that no matter what happens and despite all the obstacles, you will choose to be optimistic.  Force yourself to always see the brighter side of the story.  There are always two sides of a circumstance.  If the side you’re looking at does not look good, look at the other side.  Although simply deciding will not guarantee 100 percent positivism, it is already half the battle

2. Be more active in improving your lifeâ€"The math is simple:  if you don’t do anything, you will not get any result.  You’d better take a more active participation in your life and make it better.  Ask yourself what you can do to constantly accomplish things.  How should you treat problems?  Many people don’t succeed because they don’t really exert enough effort in thinking how they can do better.  Sometimes, thinking of a solution may be taxing.  You may even come up with a thousand ideas and most of them would fail.  However, no one can discount the fact that among the many ideas, there can be great combinations that can change your life forever.  Bear in mind that your ideas don’t have to be super-human.  Small improvements can bring about huge results.

Many studies have already shown how a positive attitude in life can make a big difference.   Some of them are the following:

    1) Optimistic men have less risks of having heart disease than pessimistic men.

    2) The substances, which your brain creates, partially depend on your feelings, thoughts, and expectations.  If you have a negative attitude about life or any specific thing (such as an illness), your brain will not produce enough of the necessary substances that your body needs to perform well.  Meaning, if you were sick and you view your sickness negatively, your body will not heal.

   3) Pessimists have twice as many infectious diseases than optimists. They also make twice as many doctor visits than the positive thinkers.

   4) Optimists have a stronger immune system than the pessimists do.

Did you know that positivism brings about good health and success?  If not, then you’d better read this article.

Here's a beautiful Catholic Hymnal of Praise, Isles. Its called, "I Am the Bread of Life".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI4ESwPb5D4#

Verse 1
I am the Bread of life,
You who come to me
shall not hunger;
and who believe in me shall not thirst.
No one can come to me
unless the Father beckons.
Verse 2
The bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world,
and if you eat of this bread,
you shall live for ever,
you shall live for ever.
Verse 3
Unless you eat of the
flesh of the Son of Man
and drink of his blood,
and drink of his blood,
you shall not have life
within you.
Verse 4
I am the Resurrection,
I am the life.
If you believe in me,
even though you die,
you shall live forever.
Verse 5
Yes, Lord, I believe that
you are the Christ,
the Son of God,
Who have come
into the world.
Chorus
And I will raise you up,
And I will raise you up,
And I will raise you up
on the last day.

Glorious Virgin and Martyr, beloved of God, Saint Philomena! I rejoice with thee in the power which God gave thee for the glory of His Name, for the edification His Church, and to reward the merits of thy life and death. I rejoice to see thee so great, so pure, so generous, so faithful to Jesus Christ, and to His Gospel, and so splendidly rewarded in Heaven, and on earth. Attracted by thy example to the practice of solid virtue full of hope at the sight of thy recompense granted to thy merits. I resolve to follow thee in avoiding all evil and in fully obeying what God commands. Help me, O great Saint by thy powerful intercession. Obtain for me particularly, a purity inviolable forever, a strength of soul always invincible in every kind of assault, a generosity which denies no sacrifice to God, and a love as strong as death for the Faith of Jesus Christ, for the Holy Roman Church and for Our Holy Father, the Father of all the Faithful, the Shepherd of shepherds and of their flocks, the Vicar of Jesus Christ over all the world.

With all the fervor of my soul, I implore these graces from thee, and, in addition, I ask these other benefits from thee with equal confidence in obtaining them through thy powerful intercession. (Here tell Saint Philomena what you need, with simplicity, confidence and humility).

Surely that God so good for Whom thou didst give thy blood and thy life that God so good Who is so generous to thee and through thy mediation, so generous with gifts and favors to us, that God so good Who has loved me even unto dying for me, even unto giving me Himself under the Eucharistic appearances, surely He will never be deaf to thy prayers, nor to my appeals, unless it be that He Himself is in some different way seeking to do me good. Full of confidence, I place all my trust in Him and in thee. Amen
