Keren Blankfeld, FORBES STAFF

This story appears in the October 2015 issue of Forbes Asia.

Family is at the core of many of Asia’s biggest and most far-flung conglomerates and some of its best-known brands. Perhaps no clan better illustrates this than the Lees of Samsung Group, whose 2014 revenues were equivalent to 22% of South Korea’s GDP. While few dominate to such an extent, many business dynasties hold wide regional sway with their sprawling, cross-border empires.

To recognize this prominence, and also as a nod to the succession and operational challenges, FORBES has compiled its first list of the 50 Richest Families in Asia. To qualify, a family’s wealth and participation in building that fortune has to extend at least three generations. Thus some of the region’s biggest patriarchal positions, such as the one originated by Hong Kong’s Li Ka-shing, are absent in this inaugural ranking. Though Li’s sons are active in business, no grandchildren have yet taken serious roles.

While most on our list have kept their flock together over generations, the 50 also includes those who’ve gone separate ways in business or are entirely estranged. For example, India’s Ambani family combines the wealth of brothers Mukesh and Anil, who inherited most of their father’s fortune on his death in 2002 but opted to do business (and much else) separately. Indians hold 14 of the 50 spots, easily the most from any jurisdiction.

To compile the list we sifted through information on 500-plus families and valued dozens. In the end a $2.9 billion net worth was needed to qualify. The valuations are based on stock prices and exchange rates on Sept. 25. Many of the family businesses are publicly traded, and although the families may retain control, they are still answerable to outside shareholders. Some, such as India’s Burmans, profiled in our latest issue, have brought in professional managers, but generational handoffs can sometimes still be an issue.

Nearly half of the richest families in Asia are of Chinese descent, yet none of the inaugural 50 is based in the mainland, where conglomerates are young, run by the first generation able to muster billions of dollars in wealth in an open economy. There and elsewhere the challenge will be to keep wealth in the family while also keeping it growing.

Science and Research / Re: Neutrinos!
October 09, 2015, 01:10:59 PM
Trillions of neutrinos pass through our bodies every second â€" almost all of these are produced in fusion reactions in the Sun's core. However, neutrino production is not just confined to our galaxy. When massive stars die, most of their energy is released as neutrinos in violent supernova explosions. Even though supernovas can appear as bright as galaxies when viewed with optical telescopes, this light represents only a small fraction of the energy released (see figure).

Physicists detected the first neutrinos from a supernova in 1987 when a star collapsed some 150 000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the galaxy nearest to the Milky Way. Two huge underground experiments â€" the Kamiokande detector in Japan and the IMB experiment near Cleveland in Ohio, USA â€" detected neutrinos from supernova 1987A a full three hours before light from the explosion reached Earth.

The event marked the birth of neutrino astronomy. New neutrino telescopes were built soon after, including the AMANDA experiment in Antarctica, and plans are under way to build an even larger experiment called ICECUBE to detect neutrinos from gamma-ray bursters billions of lightyears away.

However, neutrinos are still the least understood of the fundamental particles. For half a century physicists thought that neutrinos, like photons, had no mass. But recent data from the SuperKamiokande experiment in Japan overturned this view and confirmed that the Standard Model of particle physics is incomplete. To extend the Standard Model so that it incorporates massive neutrinos in a natural way will require far-reaching changes. For example, some theorists argue that extra spatial dimensions are needed to explain neutrino mass, while others argue that the hitherto sacred distinction between matter and antimatter will have to be abandoned. The mass of the neutrino may even explain our existence.

New experimental data, which show that neutrinos have mass, are forcing theorists to revise the Standard Model of particle physics.

IF WE look deep into the universe, we see stars and galaxies of all shapes and sizes. What we do not see, however, is that the universe is filled with particles called neutrinos. These particles â€" have no charge and have little or no mass â€" created less than one second after the Big Bang, and large numbers of these primordial low-energy neutrinos remain in the universe today because they interact very weakly with matter. Indeed, every cubic centimetre of space contains about 300 of these uncharged relics.

Ground-based telescopes, like the Anglo-Australian Observatory, saw the light from supernova 1987A several hours after the Kamiokande and IMB experiments had already detected the neutrinos that were emitted.

If only an older Honasan had held on to the ideals the younger Honasan had when he was in the military, it would have made an impact and a big difference in his decision now to run as Binay’s vice presidential candidate.

But look what has happened.

While the administration of Cory’s son, President Benigno Aquino (PNoy), is doing everything to run the country the way Honasan sees fit, what does the latter do?

Honasan has not only agreed to run in tandem with Binay, but he is also supporting a presidential candidate who has been accused of corrupt practices and who, to this day, has not proven himself clean and beyond doubt. What is even worse is that Honasan is embracing the despicable family dynasty of the Binays.

Now if this is not Honasan’s highest point of hypocrisy, I don’t know what is.

During the turbulent years of the Cory presidency, Honasan, sporting a long hair, was more known for his Rambo-style notoriety, after John Rambo, a troubled Vietnam War veteran and former US Army Special Forces soldier skilled in many aspects of survival, weaponry, hand-to-hand combat and guerilla warfare.

Ironically, during those same tumultuous years, the diminutive Binay, then an avid supporter of Cory, was seen clad in Army fatigues and lugging an Uzi submachine pistol ready to defend and die for PNoy’s mother from coup plotters. This attire and gallantry earned Binay the sobriquet “Rambotito” or Little Rambo.

Rambo and Rambotito on different sides during those days was a big joke.

Together today, they are a big disappointment.

Binay-Honasan tandem a big disappointment
Oct 5
by quierosaber

After so many rejections suffered by Vice President Jejomar Binay in his desperate attempt wooing politicians to become his running mate, he finally was able to convince Sen. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan to accept the offer.

It took a second pass though because on the first proposal Honasan described the tandem of Bi-Hon or Bin-Go (for Binay-Gringo) as a painful joke, which is another phrase for a sick joke, saying, that it won’t fly.

According to Honasan, it was the pressure coming from the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) more than Binay’s jawboning that made him succumbed to run as the party’s vice presidential candidate.

Needless to say that, like Binay, UNA itself was desperate in finding an able supporter outside the realm of the party who could help excite and improve the sagging image of Binay, that it had no other recourse but to nominate an insider, Honasan.

What can Honasan really crow about his performance and accomplishments as a politician, and even as a soldier, that would make people agog and hopeful of the Bi-Hon tandem?

We are all aware that Honasan was a former renegade soldier who led a number of aborted coups against the presidency of Cory Aquino. His reasons then for launching the rebellion was that under Cory, graft and corruption had increased, political family dynasties have gained power, the communist insurgents have been allowed to expand their activities through legal front groups and the president “adopted measures that tended or were intended to widen the rift between the military and civil government.”

Right. "Compleat", especially when used as an adjective, is certainly not obsoleat.

“Haplas man to nga Efficascent, Ma’am, kay gipanuhot man ko. Akto sab nga naghimo mi ato, akong nakuptan iyaha.

GOVERNMENT-BACKED SUPPORT

Recognizing the potential offered by the tech market, the Filipino government has been quick to acknowledge the country's needs in that sector. During his opening remarks at the 2015 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo stated, "I have to admit, the government has lagged behind in its understanding and support for the [startup] sector. That's something we'd like to change going forward."

Later in the event, the government announced a partnership with accelerator IdeaSpace that will result in a national innovation center. The government went on to state that the center would include branches situated conveniently near universities. By positioning the center near universities, the hope is that the new program will encourage the growth of a startup ecosystem in the Philippines. The development of the center has been largely modeled after neighbor Singapore’s well-known innovation district, Block 71.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Where the Filipino tech startup industry will go in the future is almost anyone's guess. For the moment, this small nation appears to have what it takes to succeed and could even prove to be a model of its own for other emerging nations.

STRADDLING TWO WORLDS

Investors have also been quick to pick up on the potential to transition more easily into new markets thanks to the Philippines' strategic position. As a gateway to the larger Southeast Asian market, the Philippines successfully occupies two worlds, existing within a thoroughly westernized market while maintaining a shared ethnicity with many of its neighbors. This has allowed the country to serve as a robust testing environment for a variety of products and services. Both Uber and Facebook Inc. (FB) have taken advantage of the opportunity, leveraging the Philippines’ familiarity with English to try out new products without translating them into another language. (For more, see Why Are Startups Going International?)

The Filipino population also has the necessary interest in tech to drive future innovations. In fact, according to Opera Software’s State of the Mobile Web report, the Philippines was found to be the world’s most active country on social media. According to the report, 86% of Opera Mini mobile browser page views in the Philippines are directed to social networking sites. Increased mobility is largely driving that trend, with more than half of the population using smartphones to access the Opera mobile browser. Filipinos are not just stopping with one device, either. Another study by Taiwanese advertising tech startup Appier found that 20.8% of multi-screen users in the Philippines use at least three devices.

There has also been a shift in the mindset of much of the Filipino workforce, one that is now leading to tremendous innovation throughout the country. Whereas their parents may have been perfectly happy working in a call center, more and more young, educated Filipinos are increasingly willing to design and build their own products and, in the process, go head-to-head with tech firms from around the world.

In many ways, this is a shift in culture, but it is one that is benefiting the country's economy immensely as investors have proven to be increasingly willing to work with Filipino companies. Among the biggest stories is Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. Last year, the Filipino telecom and IT company invested $445 million in Germany-based Rocket Internet to establish a strategic partnership aimed at the joint development of digital payment technologies for emerging markets.

A CHANGING MINDSET

Innovation runs rampant in the Philippines, and the country's tropical atmosphere has an enticing allure for tech startups looking for the ideal combination of flexibility, talent, and resources. Aside from the labor cost savings, the Philippines has quite a lot going for it, including a relatively young and highly educated workforce, as well as the fifth-largest English-speaking population in the world.

While companies looking to outsource often find they must first educate their workforce about American culture, this is not a problem in the Philippines as Filipinos are well acquainted with the American way of life. Each year, Filipino universities churn out tens of thousands of graduates specializing in engineering and technology; most graduates are highly skilled in app design and programming languages, ensuring a thoroughly capable workforce. Thanks to the flexibility of cloud computing and virtual access, companies around the world are now able to tap into this skilled workforce and an ideal pool of on-demand talent for emerging tech startups.

THE STUFF OF LEGENDS

The Philippines has also become something of a legend when it comes to churning out tech startups that rapidly reach the billion-dollar value mark and even beyond. Known as unicorns, these wildly successful startups are becoming almost commonplace in the Philippines. So far this year, the country has produced 30 such startups. (For more, see 3 Startups Worth More Than a Billion.)

Much of that growth is being driven by the country's strengthening economy. At the moment, the Philippines has the second-fastest growing economy in the world. Due to its massive business process outsourcing industry, which employs more than a million workers, the Philippines has developed an incredibly strong tech services industry. Some of the industry’s fastest growing sectors are those employing advanced skills, such as data analytics and mobile app development.

When most people think of the Philippines, what often comes to mind is endless stretches of tropical beaches and military installations left over from World War II. In the last few years, however, the Southeast Asian country has been working diligently to re-invent itself, and that work has paid off. The Philippines is rapidly gaining notoriety as a leading source of tech startups and talent.

FROM MILITARY TO MODERN

At the heart of the country's tech scene is Bonifacio Global City, a bustling and thoroughly modern financial district replete with luxury condos, malls and skyscrapers. The story was very different fifteen years ago when it was a military base still filled with barracks constructed during World War II. Following an aggressive program aimed at privatizing and converting Fort Bonifacio, the city now looks like any other major financial hub in the world.

If the identical twin pairs had preferences that were more similar than those of the fraternal twin pairs, it would suggest that genes play a bigger role, Germine said. But if the identical twins' preferences were not more similar to each other, it would suggest the environment plays a larger role, she said.

The researchers used standard calculations, that are often used in twin studies, to figure out the relative influence of the participants’ genetics and their environments on their ratings of people’s attractiveness. They concluded that people's individual environments accounted for most (78 percent) of the differences in how people perceived attractiveness.

And even for each twin in a pair, a person's individual environment is unique, the researchers said.

For example, even though twins share a lot of their environment because they usually grow up together in the same house, their individual environments â€" including their friends, what they see in the media and their first relationship â€" differ enough to give each twin an individual perception of attractiveness, Germine said. Previous research has shown that if people see a face and associate it with something positive, they tend to find that face more attractive, she added.

The researchers noted that shared environments (as opposed to individual environments) may still play a role in influencing people's preferences, but for this study, the population included was not very diverse.
#5690
In the new study, published today (Oct. 1) in the journal Current Biology, the researchers looked at 547 sets of identical twins (who have identical DNA) and 214 sets of fraternal twins (who share half their DNA) in the Australian Twin Registry. The participants looked at 98 male faces and 102 female faces, and gave them a rating based on how attractive they thought the faces were. The researchers then used these ratings to come up with what they called "individual preference scores", which were a measure of how much each participant’s ratings differed from the ratings of the average of all people in the study, according to the study.

In the first part of the study, the researchers found that if they selected two participants at random, the participants agreed on the attractiveness of a face 48 percent of the time on average, and disagreed 52 percent of the time.

That's consistent with a previous study that found that, on the one hand, fashion models can "make a fortune with their good looks" but friends can still "endlessly debate about who is attractive and who is not," the researchers wrote in the study, quoting an earlier study of the topic.

Next, the researchers set out to determine whether genes or the environment was a bigger influence on how people perceived attractiveness. In other words, they wanted to figure out what accounted for the 52 percent disagreement rate they saw in the first part of the study.

For each twin pair, the researchers compared the preferences of one twin to those of the other, to determine how similar they were. Then, they compared the similarity of all of the identical twins’ preferences to those of the fraternal twins, Germine said.

Is that guy sexy? Is that woman beautiful? If you ask these questions to a group of people, they may have different answers, and a new study hints at why: Your perception of other people's attractiveness is mainly the result of your own experiences.

In the study of twins, researchers found that a person's environment plays a bigger role than genes in shaping whom they find attractive.

The idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder has been around for a long time, said Laura Germine, a psychiatric researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and lead author of the new study. But the scientific study of this idea has been limited, she said.

Most research on perceptions of attractiveness has focused on finding which characteristics people generally find attractive in others' faces, Germine told Live Science. For example, researchers have found that faces that are more symmetrical are generally more attractive, she said.

Meanwhile, those at the other end of the scale were found to exhibit high scores for traits typically considered negative, such as anger, rule-breaking, substance use and poor sleep quality.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, echo what psychologists refer to as the 'general intelligence g-factor', said the scientists.

First proposed in 1904, the 'g-factor' is supposed to summarises an individual's abilities in different cognitive tasks but has been criticised for failing to reflect the true complexity of what goes on in the brain.

Prof Smith said: 'It may be that with hundreds of different brain circuits, the tests that are used to measure cognitive ability actually make use of different sets of overlapping circuits.

'We hope that by looking at brain imaging data we'll be able to relate connections in the brain to the specific measures, and work out what these kinds of test actually require the brain to do.'
#5693
Then, we looked at how much all of those regions communicated with each other, in every participant.'

The result was a 'connectome' for every individual - a detailed description of the extent to which the 200 separate brain regions communicate with each other.

Specific connectome variations were found to correlate with a range of behavioural and demographic measures.

A strong connectivity pattern that included symmetrical peaks on both sides of the brain in five particular regions was seen as 'positive'.

The correlation shows that those with a connectome at one end of scale score highly on measures typically deemed to be positive, such as vocabulary, memory, life satisfaction, income and years of education.
#5694
The say these patterns of brain connectivity that differ between individuals may help determine whether we live happy or miserable lives, new research suggests.

The findings are among the first to emerge from the Human Connectome Project (HCP), a £20 million collaboration between Oxford University and Washington and Minnesota universities in the US.

As the study unfolds, data from functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans conducted on 1,200 healthy volunteers will be coupled with lifestyle and behaviour tests and questionnaires.

The Oxford team used 461 of the scans to create an averaged map of brain functioning across the participants.

Professor Stephen Smith, from the university's Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain, said: 'You can think of it as a population-average map of 200 regions across the brain that are functionally distinct from each other.

Intelligent people's brains are wired differently: Researchers say 'smart minds' are more likely to be happy, well educated and earn more

Scientists who analysed brain scan data on 461 volunteers found patterns linked positive aspects of life, such as having a good memory and vocabulary, feeling satisfied, and being well educated

People at the other end of the scale were more likely to display negative traits including anger, rule-breaking, substance use and poor sleep quality

High achievers have brains that are wired differently from those with fewer intellectual or social abilities, researchers have claimed.

Scientists who analysed brain scan data on 461 volunteers found some had 'connectome' patterns linked to classically positive aspects of life, such as having a good memory and vocabulary, feeling satisfied, and being well educated.

People at the other end of the connectome scale were more likely to display negative traits including anger, rule-breaking, substance use and poor sleep quality.
