Cruel Cuisine: Sharks Fin Soup

Imagine yourself being captured, your arms and legs get cut off with a cleaver by your captors, for what reason, you do not know. Bleeding, you get thrown back onto the streets with no one around. Barely alive and conscious, a slow and painful death awaits...

To many, sharks are just ruthless killers. Sadly, Hollywood drama has made these magnificent creatures strike fear into our hearts by making them look like crazed man-hunter. Yet, they are no more as dangerous as your neighbor's Doberman or Rottweiler, or even that cute Panda in a China Zoo. Most shark attacks occur because the sharks mistaken swimmers or surfers to be a seal or some other sea creatures. Other incidents may be due to us not giving them enough respect by encroaching too much into their habitat. In fact, according to International Shark Attack File, the chances of getting hit by lightning is much higher than that of being attacked by a shark.

Now, let's look at the flip side of the coin. Mankind ruthlessly hunt down these majestic creatures, cut off their fins, and throw them back, alive, into the ocean, to drown... and to die a slow and painful death. And for what? Just so that some people can have 'Shark's fin' in their soup! (Typically a popular dish in Asian society and culture). It is estimated that 10â€"100 million sharks are slaughtered each year for their fins. Now who are the RUTHLESS KILLERS?!?

I urge all who come across this message, please say 'NO' to Shark's Fin, in whatever form. Exclude this dish from your wedding banquet. If it is being served in a feast you attend, abstain from consuming it. And when those around you asks, take the opportunity to explain to them why. That is what I do. Help spread the awareness. If the demand for it can be stopped, then the killing can, too.

By Allan Dowd â€" Wed May 25, 12:48 pm ET

VANCOUVER (Reuters) â€" Guys, want to look sexy and get the girl? Don't smile too much. Look brooding or show a bit of shame instead. Women, ignore that advice.

Women find happy men less sexually attractive than those with expressions that show pride or hint that they have done wrong and know it, according to Canadian researchers.

The study published online Tuesday in the American Psychological Association journal Emotion showed pictures of the opposite sex to both men and women. Participants were then asked for their initial reactions on sexual attractiveness based the expressions they saw.

"Men who smile were considered fairly unattractive by women," said Jessica Tracy, a University of British Columbia psychology professor who directed the study.

"So to the extent that men think that smiling is a good thing to do if they want to be found sexually attractive our findings suggest that's not the case," Tracy said.

The men's reaction was just the opposite.

"Women who smile are absolutely very attractive. That was by far the most attractive expression women showed," Tracy said in an interview.

The researchers admit they are not sure why men and women reacted differently to smiles. In a man, a big smile may make him appear too feminine or more desperate for sex.

The study also adds fuel to the notion that women are attracted to bad boys.

"Women are attracted to guys like James Dean, Edward the vampire. The guys who are flawed, but who know it and are tortured by it," Tracy said.

A slightly downcast expression of shame is an appeasement gesture that hints at a need for sympathy.

Men also found sexual attractiveness in women whose expressions and body language hinted at shame.

The researchers stressed they looked only at initial reactions of sexual attractiveness, and were not recommending men adopt a no-smile policy for a long-term relationship.

"When people want a long-term relationship they take much more into account than sexual attractiveness. How nice a person is, is a big thing," Tracy said.

"So we're not saying, don't be a nice guy," she said. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Grilled Pineapple

Sure, pineapples are great on their own, but it’s amazing how the simple act of grilling one can take it to a whole other level of deliciousness. After chowing down on burgers, toss some pineapple wedges on the grill for a quick and healthy dessert sure to please the whole family. -- http://shine.yahoo.com/

“Sure, let’s throw it on the grill,” is a phrase often heard around this time of year. While the foods being referred to tend to stay in the realm of burgers, hot dogs, steak, and chicken, there are plenty of grilling options out there. And no, I’m not just talking about grilling asparagus or corn (even though they're both delicious) or cooking fish instead of meat (again, another great option). I’m talking about foods you would never think of laying on those hot grates and branding with beautiful grill marks.

For instance, would you have ever imagined making Sunday brunch outside by grilling up some French toast? Or chowing down on barbecued lettuce? (It tastes better than it sounds.) The grill imparts a nice smoky flavor and char to foods, and more ingredients than you’d think benefit from this addition.

Sure, you could probably throw a griddle or a pan onto the grill and cook just about anything, but what about unusual foods you can just ‘throw on’?

We’ve compiled a few of our favorites and asked two cooking enthusiasts, the Food Network’s Aaron McCargo and Sam the Cooking Guy, for their most surprising items to grill. From grilled watermelon topped with smoky salt to grilled meatballs, we have plenty of new and exciting options for you to wow your friends and family with this cookout season. -- http://shine.yahoo.com/

Upper East Side sex assault on 85-year-old woman by unidentified tattooed thug caught on tape

Police are hunting for the fiend who sexually assaulted and robbed an 85-year-old woman out for a stroll on the upper East Side Monday.

Photos of the muscle-bound brute released by police show him in a white tank top and black shorts. Images taken from a surveillance video show the hulking suspect dragging the victim down a sidewalk. The woman's image is blocked by a white oval.

Police and witnesses say the man's arms are covered in tattoos.

Surveillance video of the 5:40 a.m. attack shows the sicko pretending to talk on a cell phone before putting the elderly woman in a headlock on Madison Ave. and E. 83rd St., a doorman said.

The man dragged the victim along E. 83rd St. and down the stairs of a sunken stoop of a 5-story luxury brownstone. Then he forced her to perform oral sex on him and stole a ring before fleeing, police sources said.

The doorman said a colleague came to the woman's aid and took her back to his building, where they called police.

Meanhwile, the fleeing perv stopped another doorman arriving to work at a nearby building, police sources said, asking him for the time and directions to the 86th St. subway station.

The victim, who weighs no more than 100 pounds and lives close to the crime scene, was disheveled and bruised from being dragged, witnesses said. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, officials said.

The suspect is described as a muscular Hispanic man in his 20s, about 5-foot-10.

Police spent hours searching for witnesses on surrounding streets, near Central Park, and the area around the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Doorman Bill Albers, 54, who works at a building across from where the attack happened, was shocked to hear about it.

"It's bad," he said. "A guy like that should be brought up into the woods and be fed to the animals." -- http://www.nydailynews.com/news/

"Lady Blue Eyes: My Life With Frank" (Crown Archetype), by Barbara Sinatra: In her memoir, the widow of Frank Sinatra tells it her way, adding a unique perspective to the history of one of entertainment's greats.

By now, the self-centered if often generous nature of Sinatra is as well-known as his unequaled voice. What's fascinating about "Lady Blue Eyes" is how Barbara Sinatra turns to love, admiration and denial in explaining her place at Frank's side.

From her youth in the Midwest to her days as a model and showgirl, Barbara Blakeley longed for a well-heeled life of excitement. In her telling, it was Sinatra, then in his mid-50s, who initiated their affair. Soon, she was Frank's companion â€" marriage would be years away â€" and her husband at the time the second unfaithful spouse she had left for a more successful man.

Little love notes and rather large jewels were part of the good times with Sinatra. While she tends to excuse the darker moments in their three decades together, Barbara accepts that Frank's inner demons came with the glitter and glamour.

When Sinatra hurled a brass clock into a wall during a game of charades, she considered it part of his "dangerous" charm. He berated a female columnist who brought up their adultery â€" for good measure he stuffed two dollar bills in the woman's glass â€" but Barbara saw his actions as exciting, and a loving defense of her. Friends waited by the phone to see if and when he desired their company, a routine she seems to shrug off.

Her life revolved around his, and that was fine with her. At his behest she quit smoking â€" he thought it unfeminine â€" but he never gave up his unfiltered Camels. She quickly learned what those close to him already knew: When Frank was drunk, which was not infrequent, it was best to disappear.

Her version of events, such as why Sinatra kept performing far beyond his prime, at times clashes with those of others. "Frankophiles" will debate whether she was as selfless and dutiful as she appears in these pages.

One image is as chilling as it is sad: Sinatra, on the day he died, sitting in a wheelchair poolside at their Beverly Hills, Calif., home, suffering from heart and lung ailments and memory loss, a half-eaten grilled cheese sandwich on his plate.

Even Frank Sinatra's money, fame and power had their limits. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

History / The Toothbrush: An Ancient Invention
May 30, 2011, 10:12:15 PM

A variety of oral hygiene measures have been used since before recorded history. This has been verified by various excavations done all over the world, in which chewsticks, tree twigs, bird feathers, animal bones and porcupine quills were recovered. Many people used different forms of toothbrushes. Indian medicine (Ayurveda) has used the neem tree (a.k.a. daatun) and its products to create toothbrushes and similar products for millennia. A person chews one end of the neem twig until it somewhat resembles the bristles of a toothbrush, and then uses it to brush the teeth. In the Muslim world, the miswak, or siwak, made from a twig or root with antiseptic properties has been widely used since the Islamic Golden Age. -- http://listverse.com/

Inspiration & Hope / Abort?
May 30, 2011, 10:09:52 PM
A noted professor of medicine at the University of California once presented his students with a curious hypothetical question:

"Here's the family history: The father has syphilis, the mother tuberculosis. They have already had four children. The first is blind. The second died. The third is deaf. And the fourth also has tuberculosis.

"Now the mother is pregnant again and the parents have come to you for advice. They are willing to have an abortion if you think they should. What do you say?"

After a brief discussion, the students were broken into small groups and instructed to return with a decision. Each group recommended an abortion.

"Congratulations," the professor remarked, surveying the class. "You have just taken the life of Beethoven."

[A helpful reader (Douglas Case) offers this advice: "...to distinguish fact from fiction (Beethoven was the second of seven children, not the fifth; he was the first to survive; there is no record of either his parents or siblings [having] any of the infirmities mentioned in the tale) I thought I'd offer you a quick and easy method--if the story comes from 'Ann Landers' it's a lie."... A similar hypothetical runs as follows: "An unmarried teenage girl is pregnant. Her fiance is not the baby's father and he's very upset... The child in question? Jesus Christ.]

Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827) German composer [noted for his prodigious output, including two masses, two ballets, the opera Fidelio, nine symphonies, five piano concertos, a violin concerto, thirty-two piano sonatas, ten sonatas for violin and piano, and seventeen string quartets]

LOS ANGELES â€" When Bob Krause turned 90 last week, it was by virtue of an unflagging determination and a mentality of precision that kept his body humming after being diagnosed with diabetes as a boy.

A leading diabetes research center named the San Diego resident the first American known to live 85 years with the disease, a life that has paralleled â€" and benefited from â€" the evolution in treatment.

Krause's wife of 56 years, his family and friends celebrated his longevity Sunday with a party and a medal from the Joslin Diabetes Center to commemorate his 85-year milestone.

"Bob has outlived the life expectation of a normal healthy person born in 1921," said his physician, Dr. Patricia Wu, attributing Krause's success to his strong character. "He knows that he has to deal with this and he sees this as a part of his life, he doesn't let this get him down."

The trim, white-haired Krause puts it more succinctly: "I'm a stubborn old man. I refuse to give up."

That trait certainly plays into how closely he has tracked his body's chemistry and become expert in the life-saving math that has kept his diabetes under control.

About 18.8 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated 7 million more live with the disease unwittingly. Krause's form of diabetes, type 1, was once known more commonly as juvenile diabetes, and the more common form of diabetes often tied to obesity is type 2.

About 3 million Americans live with type 1 diabetes, a chronic illness in which their bodies don't make enough insulin, which is needed to convert blood sugar into energy. The exact cause is unknown, though genetics and autoimmune problems are thought to play a role.

Life expectancy is diminished for many diabetics because they face a higher risk of serious health complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney damage and limb amputations. Many struggle to manage blood pressure.

The former University of Washington mechanical engineering professor says he's succeeded because he treats his body like a car and he only eats enough food to fuel the machine.

"To keep your diabetes under control you only eat the food you need to before you have activities to perform," Krause said. "I eat to keep me alive instead of eating all the time, or for pleasure."

Under a new order from the Ministry of Public Security, officers must also "keep appropriate manners and be in the right position when on duty," said the English-language website of state-controlled Tuoi Tre newspaper.

"This means traffic cops must not hide behind trees to ambush" and issue fines.
