Jacob "Jack" Kevorkian (May 26, 1928 â€" June 3, 2011) was an American pathologist, right-to-die activist, painter, composer and instrumentalist. He is best known for publicly championing a terminal patient's right to die via physician-assisted suicide; he said he assisted at least 130 patients to that end. He famously said "dying is not a crime".

Beginning in 1999, Kevorkian served eight years of a 10-to-25-year prison sentence for second-degree murder. He was released on parole on June 1, 2007, on condition he would not offer suicide advice to any other person. --Wiki

Germany's E. coli outbreak spreads to 11 more countries
Jun 4, 2011  |
BY HELEN LIVINGSTONE AND PAT REBER
MCCLATCHY TRIBUNE

BERLIN -- The E. coli outbreak concentrated in northern Germany has spread to 11 other countries, including the U.S., the World Health Organization said Friday, amid increasing concern about the new strain's virulence.

The German government said a "European solution" will be found to compensate vegetable growers and traders who have suffered losses as consumers avoid raw vegetables and salads.

By Thursday, 1,122 cases of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli had been reported, while 502 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure caused by this E. coli strain, had been reported, the WHO said.

In all but two of the cases the patients lived in or had recently visited northern Germany.

But the number of cases of HUS in the country had increased to 520, German authorities said Friday.

So far, the outbreak has killed 18 people in Germany and one in Sweden. Most of the victims have been women.

Health officials said four people in the U.S. might be linked to the outbreak.

All four were in northern Germany in May and officials are confident that they were infected with E. coli in that country. Three of them -- two women and a man -- are hospitalized with a kidney complication that has become a hallmark of the outbreak.

Besides Germany and the U.S., the countries affected are: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland and Britain.

Though Spanish cucumbers were cleared of blame for spreading the bug, described by Chinese researchers as a "new super-toxic" bacterium, a German Consumer Ministry spokesman repeated that consumers should avoid eating raw cucumbers, tomatoes and salad.

The difficulties doctors experience in treating the rare infection was raising concerns Friday.

"The severity of this strain has resulted in great pressure on the health services," said Winifred Kern of the University Hospital in Freiburg.

In northern Germany, hospitals were "experiencing a problem with availability of intensive care beds due to the high number of cases with life threatening complications," he said.

Doctors also questioned Europe's preparedness to deal with future outbreaks.

"This most recent E. coli epidemic, of a strain previously unseen in an outbreak, shows us yet again that new bacteria and infections are just around the corner," said Giuseppe Cornaglia, president of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. "The pan-European nature of this E. coli outbreak ... reinforces the need for concerted cooperation across borders to tackle not only this outbreak, but also future ones." -- http://www.freep.com/

See you ALL sometimes soon. Miss the fun here!

Hi, Ms. Wolf. Here's wishing you all the best--and wishing that you be here in TB more often...

Mga ginikanan sa cyber sex nagbasol
Ni Joseph Elvir C. Tubilan
Thursday, June 2, 2011

At work: Aelita started painting when she was 11-months-old and sold her first painting when she was two

Her Russian mother Nikka Kalashnikova told news.com.au: 'If a child is very talented, you have to give them the opportunity.'

Aelita began painting before she could walk at 11-months old and now has her own space to create her artworks, mainly using acrylics on canvas.

Once her parents saw that she had a talent, they submitted her work to a local gallery, prompting the owner to arrange a special exhibition for her, unaware of her tender age - then only two years old.

While most of her paintings now retail for between around $5,000 and $10,000 it was a picture of the Russian Mir space station that set her record price of $24,000 in Hong Kong.

Her parents insist they are not forcing her to paint and that the work should be judged on its artistic merits and not her age and said they hope her success paves the way for other talented children.

Mr Andre said: 'Aelita had a very, very difficult run. When her work was initially judged, it was purely on the painting itself. Nikka deliberately withheld her age just to see what the reaction was.'

Aelita is showing at the Agora Gallery in New York until June 25.

The kid's a pre-k picasso!
4-year-old artist making a splash in the city

By BRAD HAMILTON, HELEN FREUND and TODD VENEZIA
Last Updated: 12:41 AM, June 4, 2011

While most kids her age are busy playing with Elmo and Dora, Aelita Andre is spending her time giving Andy Warhol a run for his money.

The 4-year-old Australian girl has become an international art-world sensation, producing a formidable collection of abstract paintings that have sold at shows from Italy to Hong Kong for tens of thousands of dollars and earned her comparisons to the greats, like Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso.

Aelita has now come to New York with a show starting today that is expected to set the city's art world on fire.

"She's an amazingly talented painter," said Angela Di Bello, owner of the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, where Aelita's show will run until June 25. "Her mind works in the way an established artist or an art critic's would. She is highly intellectual. She just feels everything."

Some of her works for the show have already sold. An Italian collector bought three paintings -- including one called "Asteroid" -- for a total of $27,000. Her most expensive work was one sold in Hong Kong for $24,000.

"She's very excited for her opening . . . She will probably be running around making friends with everyone and singing," said her mom, Nikka Kalashnikova.

Kalashnikova and daddy Michael Andre admit their daughter's visit to New York may be turning her into a bit of an art diva.

"We took her to MoMA yesterday, and she was so upset that we were taking her to see other artists' work instead of going to her own exhibition," Kalashnikova said.

Aelita's inspiration ranges from dinosaurs to the solar system.

"I just do this and this and this but with many colors," she said, waving her hands in circles. "My favorite color is yellow." -- http://www.nypost.com/

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - A bottle of Veuve Clicquot salvaged from a 19th century shipwreck in the Baltic Sea set a world record for Champagne on Friday when it sold for 30,000 euros ($43,630) at an auction in Aland, Finland.

It is one of two bottles from a cache of 145 recovered from a two-masted schooner. The Clicquot was sold to an Internet bidder from Singapore after a spirited round with an American bidder at the auction in Mariehamn, Aland's capital.

The other Champagne bottle made by Juglar, which went out of business in the early 19th century, fetched 24,000 euros ($35,000) at the auction.

"Today proved to be one of the most historic and exhilarating events in the world of wine," said John Kapon, CEO of the New York auction house Acker Merrall & Condit, which conducted the sale.

"To have America and Asia battling it out here in Europe, setting a new world record, is a testament to the globalization of the fine wine market, and this is only the beginning," he added in a statement.

Ella Grussner Cromwell-Morgan, a sommelier who lives on Aland and tasted the Juglar, said it was sweet with a crisp acidity. She described it as having "a flowery, young citrus aroma, sort of fruity apricots."

The previous record price for a bottle of Champagne was $42,000 for a 1959 Dom Perignon Rose sold in 2008, according to Kapon.

The unidentified ship where diver Christian Erikson and his team found the Champagne, as well as bottles of beer, is estimated to have been built between 1780 and 1830. It is believed to have been on its way to the court of Czar Nicholas of Russia.

Experts estimated from the corks and hand-blown bottles that the wines were produced between 1811 and 1831.

Aland, an autonomous region, is a duty free port, so the buyers will not have to pay any taxes, according to Bjorn Haggblom, head of communications for the government of Aland.

The cache belongs to the government of Aland, an archipelago in the Baltic, which plans to use the proceeds to fund maritime archaeological work and benefit the Baltic Sea environment. -- http://beta.news.yahoo.com/

A lawyer in Chicago is being lambasted with accusations of sexism after he filed a motion with the court complaining about the distracting bust size of a ‘large breasted woman’ sitting at the opposing council’s table in court.

Attorney Thomas Gooch is representing Rolling Meadows car dealership in a small claims case and is outraged by the distraction at the opposing table. He feels his opposing council’s paralegal is too distracting for the jury to pay attention to actual court proceedings.

He alleged that the opposing legal team placed her in full view of the jury for the specific purpose of drawing “the attention of the jury away from the relevant proceedings” and has requested Cook County Circuit Judge Anita Rivkin-Carothers order her to sit in the gallery with the rest of the spectators, reported AP.

Gooch claims the woman, although she is a paralegal, has no legal experience and no right to be at the opposition table.

Opposing attorney Dmitry N. Feofanov is representing a couple who is suing Rolling Meadows over a car they purchased under warranty and when the vehicle broke the company allegedly refused to pay.

Feofanov, speaking to Jesebel.com, said the motion regarding his paralegal, Daniella Atencia, was completely without merit. He said in the motion Gooch cites no laws and makes no legal argument for why his paralegal can be dismissed or discriminated against because of her body.

Gooch, speaking to the Chicago Sun-Times, explained that while he likes "large breasts," he believed that Atencia should dress more appropriately for court as a paralegal. His motion and further comments have brought down a firestorm from legal and feminist experts.

"Why does she have to provide you with evidence of legal training? Isn't sitting there silently what most counsel do during a trial? Based on this motion, I'm thinking you are the one who should need to provide some kind of proof of legal knowledge," Elie Mystal wrote for Above the Law, directing the comments at Gooch.

Gov't files raps vs consignee, shippers of black corals
By David Dizon, abs-cbnNEWS.com
Posted at 06/03/2011 10:37 AM | Updated as of 06/03/2011 6:33 PM

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - The Bureau of Customs on Friday filed criminal charges against the shippers and consignee of a P35 million shipment of  black corals, sea turtles and other protected wildlife from Mindanao.

Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez identified the respondents as Exequiel Navarro, consignee of the shipment; Olivia Lim Li, proprietress of the Zamboanga-based Li and Lim Trading and identified by Navarro as the real shipper of the contraband; Kim L. Atillano, owner of the Zamboanga-based JKA Transport System which was the cargo forwarding company tapped by the shipper;  Ireneo Penuliar and other yet â€"to-be identified employees of the Manila branch of the JKA Transport System; and, officers/owners of Vicky’s Trucking, the company which transported the misdeclared cargo from the shipper’s warehouse to the Port of Zamboanga.

Alvarez said the respondents are accused of violating Section 91 of the Republic Act 8550, otherwise known as the Fisheries Code of the Philippines relative to the ban on coral exploitation and exportation, Fisheries Administrative Order 158 promulgated in 1986 relative to prohibition on the gathering, taking, collecting, transporting, or possession for sale of endangered species of mollusks; and, Section 27 of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001.

The respondents have been linked to the illegal shipment of 163 stuffed hawksbills and green turtles, 21,169 black corals, 7,340 trumpet and helmet shells and other endangered species found at the Eva Macapagal Domestic Terminal in Pier 15, South Harbor Manila last month.

Justice Secretary  De Lima said those charged for smuggling black corals will be put on a watchlist order.

Dr. Porfirio Alino of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) earlier said only 5 percent â€"equivalent to  just around 1,000 square kilometersâ€"of the country’s total reef area remain in good condition in the face of the wanton destruction of our coral reefs by poachers.

Bangladesh woman cuts off 'attacker's' penis
Mon May 30, 3:34 am ET

DHAKA (AFP) â€" A 40-year-old Bangladeshi woman cut off a man's penis during an alleged attempted rape and took it to a police station as evidence, police in a remote part of Bangladesh said Monday.

The woman, a married mother of three, was attacked while she was sleeping in her shanty in Jhalakathi district, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) south of Dhaka, on Saturday night, officers said.

"As he tried to rape her, the lady cut his penis off with a knife. She then wrapped up the penis in a piece of polythene and brought it to the Jhalakathi police station as evidence of the crime," police chief Abul Khaer told AFP.

The woman has filed a case accusing the man -- who is also 40 and a married father of five -- of attempted rape, saying that he had been harassing her for six months.

The severed penis has been kept at the police station and the rape suspect was undergoing treatment in hospital.

"We shall arrest him once his condition gets better," Khaer added. -- http://news.yahoo.com/
