Dominique Strauss-Kahn: his likely defence
1:42AM BST 07 Jun 2011

Dominique Strauss-Kahn denies all seven criminal charges relating to his alleged sexual assault of a hotel chambermaid at the Sofitel on May 14. His attorneys have given several clues to how they will argue that he is not guilty. They are:

1. That a consensual sexual act may have taken place.

In court last month Ben Brafman, Mr Strauss-Kahn's lead attorney, said: "The forensic evidence, we believe, will not be consistent with a forcible encounter". This prompted suggestions that, faced with reports that DNA found on the maid's clothes matched Mr Strauss-Kahn's, Mr Brafman was accepting that some kind of sexual act took place, but would argue that it was agreed to by the 32-year-old Guinean maid. On Monday outside court, Mr Brafman said again: "It will be clear there was no element of forcible compulsion in this case whatsoever. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply not credible".

2. That Mr Strauss-Kahn was only rushing to get to lunch.

After the alleged attack, Mr Strauss-Kahn left the Sofitel in a hurry, reportedly failing to properly check out of his room. For the prosecution, John McConnell, an assistant district attorney, has argued that this suggests the former head of the International Monetary Fund needed to get away from his crime scene promptly. But Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyers argue that he left in a rush only because he needed to make a lunch date with his daughter Camille, a 26-year-old graduate student at New York's Columbia University.

3. That Mr Strauss-Kahn would not have behaved the way he did if he were guilty.

After apparently leaving the lunch with his daughter, Mr Strauss-Kahn headed for John F. Kennedy airport, which is on the other side of New York City to Manhattan, where the alleged attack took place. En route, he twice telephoned the Sofitel to report that he had left one of his several mobile phones behind. By disclosing where he was, he allowed the New York police â€" who by then were at the hotel following an emergency call â€" to send detectives to arrest him. Mr Brafman has said such a move would have been "inconsistent with logic" if his client were guilty. Bizarrely, Mr Strauss-Kahn's mobile phone was not even at the hotel.

4. That Mr Strauss-Kahn was not capable of such an attack.

Citing unnamed sources that are said to have knowledge of Mr Strauss-Kahn's defence team's thinking, The New York Times reported on Monday that his attorneys are "expected to pursue the issue of whether it is even physically possible for an unarmed man, who is not particularly physically imposing, to force a person to engage in oral sex." It is likely that such a defence will also hinge on the physical size of the 32-year-old Guinean maid, who is not being named or photographed due to the nature of the alleged crimes.

5. That the maid cannot be trusted.

Mr Strauss-Kahn's attorneys last month claimed to have crucial evidence that would damage the integrity of the maid's story. Their comment came in a complaint to the judge about leaks to the New York media by investigators or prosecutors. "Were we intent on improperly feeding this media frenzy, we could now release substantial information that in our view would seriously undermine the quality of this prosecution and also gravely undermine the credibility of the complainant in the case," they said. On Monday Kenneth Thompson, the maid's new lawyer, claimed a "smear campaign" had been mounted against his client. -- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

I have a conflicting opinion on Hindu mythology. I find it rather comical -- the Hindu relation of Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) who is afraid of a mouse. It coincides with cartoon depictions of how elephants are afraid of mice. My personal opinion.

I find it funny how a 'deity' of wisdom is afraid of a four legged rodent. Particularly how a supposed immortal deity can be afraid of a simple field mouse. lol.

How can one pray to an elephant for protection when that 'god' is afraid of a simple mouse? Suppose a farmer was dealing with sporadic rat infestation. Would he receive godly aid from the elephant god? or would the elephant god run away upon hearing the request?

http://thestir.cafemom.com/in_the_news/121243/jack_kevorkian_was_a_hero

Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the infamous "Doctor Death," was a champion and a symbol of end of life empowerment to some and a murderer in the eyes of others. But for many of us who have seen a loved one die a long and painful death before our eyes, he was a hero.

Friday, at the age of 83, the good doctor himself died of natural (not assisted) causes.

Kevorkian became infamous over the years for advocating for assisted suicide and went to jail for assisting them. He spent eight years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder for helping more than 100 terminally ill patients end their lives and was released only on the condition that he would never assist another death.

It's true. Doctors do take an oath to do no harm, but as someone who watched a person close to me die in my home of cancer (my mother), I would never blame anyone for wanting to end their suffering and die with dignity.

Kevorkian was unafraid to break the taboo and to TRULY help his patients, not just watch them die slowly and painfully, unable to walk or talk, just shaking and not even knowing their family members by name at the end.

His courage has affected change all over the country. Hospice care with its palliative support and gentle philosophy has taken off. Physicians have become more sympathetic to their pain and more willing to prescribe medication to relieve it.

Now Oregon, Washington, and Montana allow medically supervised suicides and more states will likely follow. A person close to my family chose this way last year when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and her life ended peacefully amidst friends and laughter and love. She was able to say her goodbyes peacefully and leave the Earth on her terms without the indignities so many people will face in death.

If we have to go, why not do it beautifully, the way we want to go?

Kevorkian was a bit flashy for my personal taste. He flew in the face of medicine, decrying their “hypocritic oafs" and sought fame for his acts. The American Medical Association called him “a reckless instrument of death” who “poses a great threat to the public.”

And yet, it was precisely those tactics that enacted change. In this culture, we are all so afraid of death and dying that we hide it away. It's just as valid a part of the life cycle as birth, and yet one we celebrate with great fanfare and one we awkwardly pretend doesn't exist until we can hide away from the person experiencing it.

Death isn't something to hide from. And maybe if we had more choices and had the luxury to choose our times, we would be less afraid. No one would advocate for suicides when a person is young and vital, but terminal illness can be very ugly. I watched my mother decline from a woman who swam four miles a day, practiced two hours of yoga daily, and once trekked in the Andes for weeks on end become a woman who couldn't even take three steps on her own and whose mouth was full of sores from chemotherapy. She chose to ride it out on her own until the end came naturally, but I wouldn't have blamed her a bit if she had decided to end it on her own terms before it got so painful and ugly.

Kevorkian allowed his patients to decide how far down that road they were willing to go and then exit the world the way they wanted. No other doctor has championed his patients more than Kevorkian. Dying with dignity is a right we should all have.

The fact is, there are people living in misery and pain who have terminal diagnoses and would prefer to be dead. If they are not harming anyone else, why would we stop them? If we let our own fears about the unknown stop us from truly helping others, then we are no champions of life. We are just fear mongers terrified of what comes after this life.

Kevorkian was not. And his passion and his courage and his true love of his patients make him one of the more heroic doctors in modern times. No matter what the medical establishment has to say about that.

Humanists Mourn Death of Jack Kevorkian, Advocate for Death with Dignity

(June 3, 2010, Washington D.C.)  Today, leadership at the American Humanist Association mourned the death of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a physician, humanitarian, and brazen advocate for end-of-life choice. Dr. Kevorkian was given the Humanist Hero Award by the American Humanist Association in 1994. The American Humanist Association became one of the first national organizations to support end of life choices in a 1974 statement.

“Dr. Kevorkian led the charge for the right of those who wanted the freedom to end their suffering,” said Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the American Humanist Association. “His unwavering determination in the face of protest, and even legal repercussions, was a testament to his strong conviction and compassion.”

Dr. Kevorkian spent much his career advocating for the legalization of euthanasia. With a strong sense of ethics, Kevorkian refused 97 percent of assisted suicide requests received, reserving his services for the terminally ill and suffering.

“I am not a hero, eitherâ€"by my definition anyway,” said Dr. Kevorkian at the 1994 American Humanist Association annual conference. “To me, anyone who does what should be done is not a hero. Heroes to me are very, very rare. And I still feel that I’m only doing what I, as a physician, should do… That doesn’t mean I’m more compassionate than anyone else, but there is one thing I am that many are not, and that’s honest.”

Though successfully challenging the law on numerous prior occasions, Dr. Kevorkian was charged with second degree murder for his efforts, and served 9 years in jail. He was paroled in 2007, last year Al Pacino played his role in the film You Don't Know Jack, reviewed in the Humanist magazine, and he continued to lobby for euthanasia’s legalization until his death at the age of 83.

“Dr. Kevorkian’s contributions to medicine and humanity are great,” concluded Speckhardt. “He gave energy to the ‘death with dignity’ movement and brought this important civil liberties issue to the forefront.  History will thank him for that.”

“Besides, what is ethics?” Kevorkian continued in his 1994 Humanist Hero speech. “Can you define it?  My definition is simple: ethics is saying and doing what is right at the time…doing the right thing changes with time.” -- http://www.humanistteachercorps.org/

Franz Kafka's Last Words

Franz Kafka was born in Prague, Bohemia on July 3, 1883 to a German-speaking, Jewish family. He attended Charles Ferdinand University and received a doctorate in Law in 1906.

Kafka is best known for his short story “Metamorphosis” which he finished in 1912.  In 1913 he wrote Meditation and in 1914, he completed Before the Law. By 1917, he had written The Judgement, In the Penal Colony, and A Country Doctor. Also by then, he had been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

1923 found him in Berlin, where he penned A Hunger Artist in 1924, which was a collection of four stories. His future novels included The Trial, The Castle, and Amerika.

In April of 1924, he entered a sanitorium in Kierling, Austria. He died on June 3, 1924. Franz Kafka last words were made to his doctors. As he was dying from tuberculosis, he begged the doctor to give him an overdose of morphine so he would no longer suffer. He said, “Kill me, or else you are a murderer!”  --from http://www.yourdictionary.com/reference/resources/franz-kafka-last-words.html

No hero’s burial for ex-Philippine dictator
By JIM GOMEZ | AP
Published: Jun 6, 2011 01:01 Updated: Jun 6, 2011 01:01

MANILA: The Philippine vice president has recommended that former dictator Ferdinand Marcos should not be buried at Manila’s heroes’ cemetery but that full military honors could be accorded if he is laid to rest in his northern political stronghold instead, officials said Sunday.

Marcos was ousted in a 1986 “people power” revolt led by current President Benigno Aquino III’s late mother, Corazon Aquino. Marcos died three years later in exile in Hawaii and his body was returned in 1993 to his northern Philippine hometown of Batac in Ilocos Norte province, where it has been displayed in a glass coffin and has become a tourist attraction.

His flamboyant widow, Imelda, has long pushed for the burial of her husband in the National Heroes’ cemetery in the Philippine capital, but has been opposed by pro-democracy and left-wing groups, which have accused the late dictator of plundering the nation’s coffers and of massive human rights violations during his two-decade rule.

President Aquino asked Vice President Jejomar Binay four months ago to study Marcos’ burial and recommend how the long-divisive issue could finally be settled. Aquino has refused to decide alone on the issue, saying he would naturally be biased.

In a report to Aquino, Binay recommended that Marcos be given full military honors if his family decides to have him laid to rest in Ilocos Norte instead of in the heroes’ cemetery, three officials told The Associated Press.

The officials, who have seen the report, spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the issue before Aquino announces his decision on Binay’s recommendation.

Marcos’ family has not commented on whether Binay’s view is acceptable to them. The recent burial of a former military chief accused of corruption at the heroes’ cemetery, which is reserved for soldiers, presidents, statesmen and national artists, revived questions on whether Marcos should be similarly honored.

Gen. Angelo Reyes committed suicide at his mother’s grave on Feb. 8 after being accused of receiving huge military payoffs. He had denied the allegation.

A survey by the independent Social Weather Stations showed that Filipinos are almost evenly divided, with 50 percent saying Marcos should be buried at the heroes’ cemetery and 49 percent opposing the idea.

The nationwide survey of 1,200 adults was conducted March 4-7 and had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

A majority of members of the House of Representatives have backed a resolution urging Aquino to allow Marcos’ burial at the cemetery, extolling the late president as a patriot who built the country’s modern foundations with his infrastructure projects.

The Makati Business Club, a group of top business executives, blasted the resolution, saying it was “a gross distortion of the late dictator’s true legacy of autocracy, ruined democratic institutions, violent political repression, unprecedented wholesale corruption, shameless nepotism, crony capitalism.” -- http://arabnews.com/

The expressions such as veil of false ego, the veil of ignorance, the veil of illusion, the veil of doubts, the veil of falsehood, the veil of Maya, etc., are essentially the same, which camouflage Reality. The bastard son of this false ego is the religious fanaticism and bigotry â€" miserable existence surrounded by mental filth and darkness (Agiaan). We exhibit this false consciousness under the sense of limited individuality grown out of our body-bound inclinations. Due to the wrong impression that we are the product of material nature, we function with an arrogant sense of doership and enjoyership (false ego). Both these doership and enjoyership go together, and create in us the misapprehension that we are limited entities, separate from God as well as other beings. -- http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/

Quotable Quotes / On Religious Fanaticism
June 06, 2011, 05:16:02 AM
Differences arise from man's limited understanding of his Essential Nature, which is Truth-Knowledge-Bliss Absolute. This limited understanding comes into being on accounts of false ego-sense (Haume or "I-ness"); which is always at war, Within and without. Thus, man's own thoughts, words, and actions guided by his false ego are the root cause of all his troubles, including religious fanaticism and bigotry. It's the birth of this false ego that causes the bondage of objectivity and conceptualization, which, in turn, creates havoc in the forest of man's body. From there it expands to engulf families, communities, nations and then the entire world. Clearly, conflict is inevitable until the psychological construction "I" (false ego) does not dissolve. -- http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/

E. coli outbreak blamed on German veggie sprouts
By KIRSTEN GRIESHABER and TOMISLAV SKARO, Associated Press â€" 31 mins ago

HAMBURG, Germany â€" The terrifying E. coli outbreak in Europe appears to have been caused by vegetable sprouts grown on an organic farm in Germany, an agriculture official Sunday as the toll climbed to at least 22 dead and more than 2,200 sickened.

Preliminary tests found that bean sprouts and other sprout varieties from the farm in the Uelzen area, between the northern cities of Hamburg and Hannover, could be traced to infections in five German states, Lower Saxony Agriculture Minister Gert Lindemann said.

"There were more and more indications in the last few hours that put the focus on this farm," Lindemann said.

Many restaurants involved in what is now the deadliest known E. coli outbreak in modern history had received deliveries of the sprouts, which are often used in salads, Lindemann spokesman Gert Hahne told The Associated Press.

Definitive test results should be available Monday, Lindemann said.

In recent days, as health officials tried to pinpoint the source of the unusually lethal outbreak, suspicion fell on lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes, perhaps from Spain. Spanish farmers complained that the accusations were having a devastating financial effect.

"First it's the `evil' Spaniards, and then you hear, very surprised, that it is our neighbor," said Dietrich Benni, who lives near the German farm. "It's a bit scary all of this, especially that it is coming from an organic place."

He added: "No more organic food for me for now."

The farm was shut down Sunday and all its produce recalled, including fresh herbs, fruits, flowers and potatoes. Two of its employees were also infected with E. coli, Lindemann said. He said 18 different sprout mixtures from the farm were under suspicion, including sprouts of mung beans, broccoli, peas, chickpeas, garlic lentils and radishes.

As for how the sprouts became contaminated, Lindemann noted that they are grown with steam in barrels at 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) â€" an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply.

He said it is possible that the water was contaminated with E. coli or that the sprout seeds â€" purchased in Germany and other countries â€" contained the germ. He said the farmers had not used any manure, which is commonly spread on organic farms and has been known to cause E. coli outbreaks.

Lindemann urged Germans not to eat sprouts until further notice. He said authorities could not yet rule out other possible sources and warned Germans to continue avoiding tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce for now.

AP journalists went to the farm on Sunday night, but nobody was available to talk. Telephone messages left at the farm's office were also immediately returned.

The outbreak has been blamed on a highly aggressive, "super-toxic" strain of E. coli, perhaps one that scientists have never seen before.

E. coli can be found in the feces of humans and livestock and can spread to produce through sloppy bathroom habits among farmworkers and through animal waste in fields and in irrigation water. Organic farms tend to use more manure than other producers do.

Sprouts have been implicated in previous E. coli outbreaks, particularly one in 1996 in Japan, where tainted radish sprouts killed 12 people and reportedly sickened more than 12,000 others.

The head of Germany's national disease control center raised the death toll to 22 Sunday â€" 21 in Germany and one in Sweden â€" and said an additional 2,153 people in Germany have been sickened. That figure included 627 people who have developed a rare, serious complication of the disease that can cause kidney failure. Ten other European nations and the U.S. have reported a total of 90 other victims.

26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.

27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

  “‘the sun will be darkened,
  and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.

31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.

34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.

35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;

39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.

41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.

44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. (From Matthew 24, NIV)

The Second Coming of Christ, the Second Advent, or the Parousia, is the anticipated return of Jesus from Heaven to Earth. This prophecy is found in the canonical gospels and is part of most Christian eschatologies. Christians generally believe the anticipated event is predicted in Biblical Messianic prophecy. Views about the nature of Jesus' Second Coming vary among Christian denominations and sometimes among individual Christians within these denominations. --Wiki
