Aldrovanda vesiculosa, also known as the waterwheel plant, is a fascinating rootless, carnivorous, aquatic plant. It generally feeds on small aquatic vertebrates, using a trap mechanism called a snap trap.

This plant consists mainly of free floating stems, reaching 6 â€" 11cm in length. The 2-3mm trap leaves grow in whorls of 5-9, in close succession along the plant’s central stem. The traps are attached to petioles, which contain air, and assists in floatation. This is a very fast growing plant and can reach 4-9mm per day, in some instances even producing a new whorl every day. As the plant grows from one end, the other end will continuously die off.

The traps basically consists of two lobes which fold together to make the snap traps. The openings of the trap point outwards, and are covered in a fine coating of trigger hairs, which will cause the trap to snap shut around any prey that comes too close. The trap closes in only 10 milliseconds, making it one of the fastest examples of plant movement in the animal kingdom. -- http://listverse.com/

ROCKFORD, Mich. â€"  A Michigan man says he's grateful his dog ate most of his toe while he was passed out drunk.

Jerry Douthett of Rockford says his Jack Russell terrier, Kiko, helped uncover an undiagnosed diabetic condition and led to treatment that could save his lifeâ€"even if it meant losing his toe.

The Grand Rapids Press reported that the 48-year-old musician knew for a while something was wrong with his foot. He resisted seeking care until giving in to his wife's pressure one day last month.

Before going for an appointment, Douthett says he went out drinking, then came home and passed out. When he awoke, the terrier was beside him in bed and lots of blood was where his toe used to be.

"But then I heard these screams coming from the bedroom, and he was yelling, 'My toe's gone, my toe's gone!'" Douthett’s wife, Rosee told the Grand Rapids Press.

Kiko had sniffed out a major problem that Douthett had been hidingâ€"Type 2 diabetes.

Dogs have 220 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to only 50 million in humans.

"It smelled, and I look back now and realize every time we'd visit someone with a dog, their dog would be sniffing all over my foot," Douthett said.

His wife, a registered nurse, rushed him to Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus, where doctors found a serious bone infection and amputated the rest of the toe.

When admitted to hospital, Douthett had a dangerously high blood-sugar level of 560, significantly higher than the recommended 80 to 120.

Douthett joked with a nurse before the amputation that he would like to keep the rest of the toe as a treat for Kiko.

"If it hadn't been for that dog, I could have ended up dead," Douthett said. -- http://www.foxnews.com/

Dismantle kubols

Biazon called for the dismantling of the kubols, an order De Lima promptly gave.

Biazon recalled how he saw the kubol of one Chinese inmate who is a drug lord. “Can you imagine an inmate having control and locking of cells? Gwardya di makapasok!"

NBP Supt. Ramon Reyes said it’s a practice he just found when he assumed office.

Reyes confirmed his predecessor, Diokno, had already ordered these dismantled, but the place where the affected inmates will be transferred is still due for repair for a month.

Reyes confirmed there is a double standard on who gets to avail of the kubols. Those with resources can avail of those. Those without, can’t.

De Lima promptly ordered the dismantling of the kubols discussed. She also wants NBP officials to come up with an action plan on how to dismantle the rest of the kubols.

Rep. Magtanggol Gunigundo asked Reyes to monitor the DVDs and CDs allowed inside as part of the entertainment.

Illegal drugs problem

Inmate Nonito Arele, for his part, told lawmakers that 2-3 weeks ago, they apprehended some illegal drugs. They could not give more details, but Reyes assured that charges have been filed. He was ordered by the committee to furnish them a copy of the charge.

Aside from illegal drugs, another issue that came up was prostitution inside Bilibid. Apparently, sex workers are allowed in.

Few details were given as the lawmakers decided to take it up in executive session.

The committee has decided to do an ocular inspection of all of the country’s penitentiaries.

After the hearing, De Lima was surprised to find out that 3 prison guards were charged for illegal demolition and malicious mischief over the demolition of the kubols in the past. She will look into their cases.

Short, medium, long-term plans

Also, during the hearing, De Lima revealed that the short-term solution for prison congestion which President Aquino is considering is shipping some inmates to the Iwahig Penal Colony in Palawan.

The medium-term solution is shipping inmates to other prison facilities nationwide.

The long-term solution is the regionalization of the prisons or the creation of the so-called Bilibid Estate in another location. -- http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/

Chinese VIPs

Former BuCor chief Ernesto Diokno said the kubols media and lawmakers saw were from Chinese inmates. He said he wanted these kubols dismantled shortly before he resigned.

Lawmakers saw the ocular as an eye opener.

During a preliminary briefing, BuCor officials said that the NBP buildings are on average more than 2x their maximum capacity.

One particular building is at 403% of its capacity.

Figures from the BUCOR say the NBP has 19,334 inmates. That makes for 1:93 prison guard to inmate ratio.

Managed by gangs

Each of the buildings is managed by gangs.

The lawmakers went around the compound under the shade of umbrellas.

The lawmakers likewise toured Antonio Leviste’s infamous kubo in the Minimum Security Compound.

Congestion

Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares noted how the management of the prisons lended itself to the congestion by cramping less moneyed inmates in smaller kubols to allow better financed inmates to have more privilege space.

“You're contributing to congestion by unequal distribution of cells,” he said.

De Lima said a probe is ongoing on the alleged drug dealings inside the prison. She assured that appropriate charges will be filed once the facts are ready.

Biazon called for higher salaries for prison guards. He also wants to increase the number of BuCor personnel from the current 2,300-plus to over 23,000 personnel.

This will allow the guard to prison ratio from the current 1:93 to 1: 10, after he noted that the current
prison population is at 36,000 nationwide.

One of the DVDs found was a copy of the popular
TV series
Prison Break.

'Like a motel'

Congressman Magtanggol Gunigundo found a DVD stash that included a sexy DVD, some Nazi DVDs and a DVD of the hit TV show about life behind bars, "Prison Break.”

One kubol was full of mirrors, prompting one of the mediamen to quip, “Parang motel ah.”

The temperature inside the buildings with the kubols is very humid.

Some kubols have 2nd floors or are on split levels.

The inmates were lined up outside as lawmakers from the justice committee did an ocular inspection of the place.

The lawmakers were accompanied by Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and Department of Justice (DOJ) Officials.

Congressmen visiting the "kubols" were surprised to
see a DVD player and several discs inside.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - The state of VIPs in the New Bilibid Prison’s (NBP) Maximum Security Compound drew the ire of lawmakers who went on an ocular inspection of the NBP in Muntinlupa City.

Members of the House Justice Committee did an ocular of the buildings in the maximum, medium and minimum security compounds and saw the inequalities and sub-human conditions inside the prisons.

Congressmen Rodolfo Biazon and Elpidio Barzaga lost their temper during the ocular inspection.

Barzaga complained that when they were going around, they found some of the “kubol” or cubicle of inmates in the buildings to be locked.

It took a few minutes before the kubol was opened, and only after the keys to the kubol’s locks were retrieved from the occupying inmates.

The floor and wall tiles of the kubols are distinct from kubol to kubol. Each has its own toilet, exhaust fan
and basic kitchen amenities. Some have their own TV and DVD players aside from pullout beds.

Biazon was also angry because he found a children’s playroom with some toys.

5 top nutritional tips to prevent hair loss
http://www.hairlaserremoval.co.uk/

1.    Protein is composed of the amino acids essential for the building of new cells, including hair. Five amino acids are of particular relevance to hair growth - cystine, cysteine, methionine, arginine and lysine.

Inadequate protein intake over a lengthy period can force hair into the resting phase with shedding a few months later. It is obvious then that sufficient portions of protein rich foods should form part of your daily diet. The best sources of dietary protein are lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, soy, nuts, grains and seeds. At least 15% of your daily calories should come from protein-rich foods.

2.    Eat adequate amounts of useful carbohydrates.

Carbs are an essential source of energy and help in the growth of body tissues, including hair. They are an important source of the B vitamins that are vital to healthy hair.

It is important that you concentrate on consuming non-refined carbs rather than the sugars and white flour that are so prevalent in many over-refined carb products. You should place an emphasis on consuming vegetables, fruits, whole grains, brown rice and potatoes. It is recommended that you obtain 55-60% of your daily calories from the carbohydrates found in these foods.

3.    Achieve a healthy balance of dietary fats.

Fat is used in energy production and can be found in both animal and plant foods. Your body needs sufficient levels of fat to maintain good health. That fat should be obtained from a mixture of lean animal and plant sources. Roughly 25-30% of your daily calories should come from these sources.

4.    The right nutritional balance is one that suits your personal circumstances.

How much of each food group you eat depends on a host of factors including age, sex, health and level of physical activity. When choosing meals and snacks, take account of the following key principles of sound nutrition:

    - Eat a variety of foods.
    - Apply moderation to your consumption of junk foods.
    - Choose natural and lightly processed foods as often as possible.
    - Do not over cook.

5.    Support a nutritious diet with a few carefully chosen supplements.

Following a nutritious diet is essential for good hair health, but on its own this may not be sufficient for a number of reasons:
    - Modern farming methods may deplete the nutrient quality of food.
    - High stress levels may diminish nutrients in your body.
    - Dieting may affect nutrient levels.
    - Aging reduces the ability of our bodies to utilize certain nutrients.
    - Exercise can deplete some nutrients.

It may be sufficient to supplement with a well-balanced multi-vitamin / mineral product but a number of products are available that specifically cater for the requirements of healthy hair.

The Exchanged Life
By Hudson Taylor

[Hudson Taylor was one of the greatest Christian missionaries of all time. He pioneered a mission work, China Inland Mission, that thrust the gospel into the interior of China. This is a letter to his sister, Amelia, written in October, 1869 from China.]

I knew that if I could only abide in Christ all would be well, but I could not. I would begin the day with prayer, determined not to take my eye from Him for a moment, but pressure of duties, sometimes very trying, constant interruptions, often very wearing, would cause me to forget Him. Then one’s nerves get so fretted in this climate that temptations to irritability, hard thoughts and sometimes unkind words are all the more difficult to control. Each day brought its register of sin, failure, and lack of power. To will was indeed present with me, but how to perform, I found not.

Hmm, hangtod karon, lisod jud kuno gihapon kon langyaw ka nga tua magpuyo sa China...  :-\
