For two decades, Al Gentry had pressed investigators in vain to re-examine his brother's death. The case was finally reopened in January, 2008, after he asked Burris, then the newly elected sheriff, to look into it.

"I'm numb," said Al Gentry, one of eight siblings who grew up in rural North Carolina. "I wanted justice and we're not going to get it."

Betty Neumar had raised suspicion of authorities because all her five husbands had died before her.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An elderly grandmother who left a trail of five dead husbands in five states over decades has died in Louisiana after an illness, her son-in-law said Monday.

Terry Sanders said Betty Neumar died in a hospital in Louisiana. Stanly County, N.C., Sheriff Rick Burris said authorities are looking into her death.

"We're going to make sure we examine the death certificate," Burris said.

The 79-year-old, who earned the nickname "Black Widow," was facing three counts of solicitation to commit first-degree murder. She was accused of trying to hire someone to kill her fourth husband, Harold Gentry, in the weeks before his death in 1986.

Neumar was arrested in 2008 and released on a $300,000 bond. She had been living in Augusta, Ga., where she moved after Gentry's death. She also spent time with Sanders and his wife, Peggy, in Ocala, Fla. Her trial was postponed numerous times since her arrest.

Authorities discovered Neumar had been married five times since the 1950s, and each union ended with her husband's death. Investigators in three states reopened several of the cases, but have since closed them.

"She was tough country girl and fought through a lot of pain," said Sanders, who has been married 38 years to Neumar's daughter.

He said he didn't know about funeral arrangements. "I'm not sure where she's going to be buried. Peggy and (her sister) Kelli, are taking care of all that."

But the latest development was bittersweet to Gentry's brother, Al Gentry of Albermarle, N.C.

"I wanted justice and we're not going to get it." -- http://www.foxnews.com/

The other day, Salceda said in his Independence Day speech at the provincial hall in Legazpi City: “Let us boycott “Made in China” products. Let us hurt them where it counts.”

By not buying Chinese, the former economic adviser to the Arroyo administration said, “we also protect our children and communities from the pervasive and persistent risks of various types of contamination and poor quality of their products.”

Salceda stressed the need to get back at China through trade, saying it had become the only viable alternative for ordinary Filipinos.

He maintained that he was “not against the Chinese people who are here in our country, but I am against imported Chinese products.”

According to Salceda, “the risks of a China boycott are reasonable and affordable when compared to the costs to national well-being of other options, or of doing nothing.”

“Sure, it will not bring mighty China to its knees but it would make it loud and clear to the imperial mandarins of Beijing that all Filipinos are united in their sentiment: Enough of the bullying that tramples upon our dignity as a nation,” he added.

Myth #5: Low-Calories Foods Help You Lose Weight

Not always.

Processed low-calorie foods can be weak allies in the weight-loss war. Take sugar-free foods. Omitting sugar is perhaps the easiest way to cut calories. But food manufacturers generally replace those sugars with calorie-free sweeteners, such as sucralose or aspartame. And artificial sweeteners can backfire. One University of Texas study found that consuming as few as three diet sodas a week increases a person's risk of obesity by more than 40 percent. And in a 2008 Purdue study, rats that ate artificially sweetened yogurt took in more calories at subsequent meals, resulting in more flab. The theory is that the promise of sugarâ€"without the caloric payoffâ€"may actually lead to overeating.

"Too many people are counting calories instead of focusing on the content of food," says Alderman. "This just misses the boat."

Your move:

Avoid artificial sweeteners and load up your plate with the bona fide low-calorie saviors: fruits and vegetables.

Myth #4: Exercise Burns Most of Our Calories

Not even close.

Even the most fanatical fitness nuts burn no more than 30 percent of their daily calories at the gym. Most of your calories burn at a constant simmer, fueling the automated processes that keep you aliveâ€"that is, your basal metabolism, says Warren Willey, D.O., author of Better Than Steroids. If you want to burn fuel, hit the gas in your everyday activities.

"Some 60 to 70 percent of our total caloric expenditure goes toward normal bodily functions," says Howell. This includes replacing old tissue, transporting oxygen, mending minor shaving wounds, and so on. For men, these processes require about 11 calories per pound of body weight a day, so a 200-pound man will incinerate 2,200 calories a dayâ€"even if he sat in front of the TV all day.

And then there are the calories you lose to N.E.A.T., or nonexercise activity thermo-genesis. N.E.A.T. consists of the countless daily motions you make outside the gymâ€"the calories you burn while making breakfast, playing Nerf football in the office, or chasing the bus. Brandon Alderman, Ph.D., director of the exercise psychophysiology lab at Rutgers University, says emerging evidence suggests that "a conscious effort to spend more time on your feet might net a greater calorie burn than 30 minutes of daily exercise."

Your move:

Take frequent breaks from your desk (and couch) to move your body and burn bonus calories.

Health and Food / Re: The Truth About Calories

Myth #3: A Calorie Ingested is a Calorie Digested

It's not that simple.

Just because the food is swallowed doesn't mean it will be digested. It passes through your stomach and then reaches your small intestine, which slurps up all the nutrients it can through its spongy walls. But 5 to 10 percent of calories slide through unabsorbed. Fat digestion is relatively efficientâ€"fat easily enters your intestinal walls. As for protein, animal sources are more digestible than plant sources, so a top sirloin's protein will be better absorbed than tofu's.

Different carbs are processed at different rates, too: Glucose and starch are rapidly absorbed, while fiber dawdles in the digestive tract. In fact, the insoluble fiber in some complex carbs, such as that in vegetables and whole grains, tends to block the absorption of other calories. "With a very high-fiber diet, say 60 grams a day, you might lose as much as 20 percent of the calories you consume," says Wanda Howell, Ph.D., a professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Arizona.

So a useful measure of calories is difficult. A lab technician might find that a piece of rock candy and a piece of broccoli have the same number of calories. But in action, the broccoli's fiber ensures that the vegetable contributes less energy. A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that a high-fiber diet leaves roughly twice as many calories undigested as a low-fiber diet does. And fewer calories means less flab.

Your move:

Aim to consume at least 35 to 40 grams of fiber every day. That being said, not all fiber is created equal.

Myth #2: All Calories Are Created Equal

Not exactly.

Our fuel comes from three sources: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. "They're handled by the body differently," says Alan Aragon, M.S., a Men's Health nutrition advisor. So that old "calories in, calories out" formula can be misleading, he says. "Carbohydrates, protein, and fat have different effects on the equation."

Example: For every 100 carbohydrate calories you consume, your body expends 5 to 10 in digestion. With fats, you expend slightly less (although thin people seem to break down more fat than heavy people do). The calorie-burn champion is protein: For every 100 protein calories you consume, your body needs 20 to 30 for digestion, Buchowski says. Carbohydrates and fat give up their calories easily: They're built to supply quick energy. In effect, carbs and fat yield more usable energy than protein does.

Your move:

If you want to lose weight, make protein a priority at every meal. Adding them to snacksâ€"especially before you exerciseâ€"can help too.

Myth #1: Calories Fuel Our Bodies

Actually, they don't.

A calorie is simply a unit of measurement for heat; in the early 19th century, it was used to explain the theory of heat conservation and steam engines. The term entered the food world around 1890, when the USDA appropriated it for a report on nutrition. Specifically, a calorie was defined as the unit of heat required to raise 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.

To apply this concept to foods like sandwiches, scientists used to set food on fire (really!) and then gauge how well the flaming sample warmed a water bath. The warmer the water, the more calories the food contained. (Today, a food's calorie count is estimated from its carbohydrate, protein, and fat content.) In the calorie's leap to nutrition, its definition evolved. The calorie we now see cited on nutrition labels is the amount of heat required to raise 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

Here's the problem: Your body isn't a steam engine. Instead of heat, it runs on chemical energy, fueled by the oxidation of carbohydrates, fat, and protein that occurs in your cells' mitochondria. "You could say mitochondria are like small power plants," says Maciej Buchowski, Ph.D., a research professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University medical center. "Instead of one central plant, you have several billion, so it's more efficient."

Your move:

Track carbohydrates, fats, and proteinâ€"not just caloriesâ€"when you're evaluating foods.

Health and Food / The Truth About Calories
June 13, 2011, 09:15:36 AM
By Clint Carter, Men's Health
Thu, Jun 02, 2011

You can't go anywhere without being confronted by calories. Restaurants now print calorie counts on menus. You go to the supermarket and there they are, stamped on every box and bottle. You hop on the treadmill and watch your "calories burned" click upward.

But just what are calories? The more calories we take in, the more flab we addâ€"and if we cut back on them, then flab starts to recede too, right? After all, at face value, calories seem to be the factor by which all foods should be judged. But if that were true, 500 calories of parsnips would equal 500 calories of Double Stuf Oreos.

Not quite. There's nothing simple about calories. Learn the distinctions and lose the lard.

How To Tips / Make Your Own Toothpaste
June 13, 2011, 09:04:27 AM
It wasn't until the late 1800s that companies like Colgate began producing commercial toothpastes. Like products of the nineteenth and twentieth century, marketing became the driving force. Additives like fluoride, flavoring, coloring, and foaming agents are now a standard part of the recipe for commercial toothpaste. But you can keep your teeth clean and white and your gums healthy without these additives. Just use the same simple ingredients your great grandmother used for her family's tooth powders and toothpastes.

Baking Soda and Peroxide

The easiest solution is to make a paste of baking soda and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Not only with this make your teeth and mouth fresh and clean, the peroxide will help to whiten your teeth.

Baking Soda and Oils

Another recipe combines ½ half teaspoon of baking soda with ½ half teaspoon of finely ground sea salt and a drop of peppermint, spearmint, orange, clove or cinnamon oil for flavoring. Mix in a few drops of water to form a paste thick enough to stay on your toothbrush. Store in an air tight container.

Citrus Powered

To make a tooth powder, add a teaspoon or two of dried lemon or orange rind to a mixture of ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of table salt. Grind the ingredients together in a food processor. Store in an air tight container. To use, dip your moistened toothbrush into the powder.

This year, the Institute of Medicine released a report linking sleep disorders and sleep deprivation to a host of ills, including an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke.

Scientists are confirming what yogis and ayurvedic physicians have reported for centuries: deep sleep rests the body and the mind. Our daily dose of shut-eye regulates our weight, strengthens our immunity, protects our cardiovascular health, repairs our tissues and cells, and restores our energy. Sleep also allows us to process, consolidate, and retain new memories; it balances our emotions, makes us better problem solvers, and feeds our creativity.

President Aquino told reporters in Brunei last week that a military confrontation between the Philippines and China would be “no contest.” In terms of military strength, China has “a great advantage,” he said. “Even in a boxing match, there’s one and half billion of them, [while] we are barely 100 million.”

All true, of course. But stating the obvious seems totally unnecessary and counterproductive, especially at this time when China seems ready to flaunt its military strength even at the risk of looking like the bully in the block. In an age when colonialism seems like a distant memory, China has been signaling its determination to assert its sovereignty over marine territories also being claimed by its neighborsâ€"by force, if necessary. Pleading helplessness in the face of so much muscle-flexing could only encourage China to conduct further acts of intimidation.

Already in the last four months, Philippine authorities have counted at least six Chinese military incursions into Philippine territory. And on at least two such occasions, the Chinese vessels acted belligerently. On Feb. 25, for instance, a Chinese missile frigate drove away three Philippine fishing vessels anchored on Jackson Atoll by first threatening to shoot them and then actually firing three shots into the water. A few weeks later, in March, Chinese vessels threatened to ram a Philippine-commissioned boat conducting seismic studies at the Reed Bank. Then in May another Chinese vessel unloaded construction materials in Amy Douglas Shoal.

These shoals and atolls are less than 100 nautical miles from Palawan and well within the 200-mile exclusive economic zone as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. As Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda put it, “You are speaking of western Palawan, you are not speaking of the Spratlys,” and Palawan is not a disputed area.

What were Chinese military vessels doing 600 nautical miles from China’s nearest coastline and deep in Philippine territory? China is trying to establish ownership over the whole South China Sea. So what will it claim next, Manila Bay?

China is so confident that it will have its way with its smaller neighbors that it has announced that it would send its biggest oil rig to start drilling in the disputed Spratlys. It dismisses its neighbors claims to the Spratlys by saying there is nothing for them to claim since the area rightfully belongs to China. And consistent with this position, the Chinese government flatly denies that its vessels have intruded into Philippine territory. Chinese officials are saying in effect that China cannot be accused of intruding into its own territory.

But even as China intensifies its show of force, Chinese officials continue to reassure its neighbor that it wants nothing more than peace. In Singapore last Sunday, Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said his country was committed to “peace and stability” in the South China Sea. He said China would never threaten any country or “seek hegemony.”

Maybe China has a different definition of what constitutes peace, but firing shots over fishing vessels and pushing away research ships are not peaceful acts anywhere. Which is why Filipino officials have lately dropped all diplomatic pretense and has directly accused China of “serious violations of Philippine sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.” Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario has said that while the Philippines is committed to follow international laws, the 2002 Declaration of Conduct in the South China Sea forged by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China, under which all the parties agreed to exercise restraint and refrain from occupying uninhabited areas, was being “aggressively violated.” And because all its complaints have gone unheeded by Chinese authorities, the Philippines is now bringing the case to the United Nations.

Instead of enjoying it like one former foreign secretary advised in regard to another violation of Philippine sovereignty, Filipino officials are now crying rape, and making the whole world know who is doing it. If China believes it can ignore the protests of a small nation with hardly any military capability to speak of, it may yet think differently if the international community is sufficiently roused to condemn its naked aggression.

FREEDOM DAY RITES President Aquino leads the flag-raising ceremony in commemoration of the 113th anniversary of Philippine independence held at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite. He is joined by Cesar Aguinaldo Virata and the Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff, Gen. Eduardo Oban. The event celebrates the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898, by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo and the Filipino revolutionary forces from the Spanish colonizers. RAFFY LERMA

KAWIT, Caviteâ€"Hoisting the national flag in the same town where revolutionaries proclaimed Philippine independence 113 years ago, President Benigno Aquino III promised Filipinos a country free from corruption and a nation no longer like “a paper boat drowning in a sea of lies and anomalies.”

“The time to be ashamed as Filipinos is behind us,” Mr. Aquino said in an Independence Day speech from the balcony of Emilio Aguinaldo’s mansion here.

Now a shrine, it was where the young Aguinaldo as the country’s first President unfurled the Philippine flag in 1898 and proclaimed “Filipinas is for Filipinos,” signaling the colony’s separation from Spain.

Mr. Aquino led the flag ceremony, grasping the rope tethered to the flag and vigorously pulling, until the red-blue-and-yellow banner was unfurled at the top.

In his speech that was by turns serious and light, he trumpeted the reforms his administration had launched to give Filipinos a taste of “true freedom.” He lashed out at irregularities in the past administration.

Question and Answer / Re: is it Love or Security?
June 12, 2011, 10:12:04 PM
Love is one thing, marriage is another thing, and security is still another thing. One might marry for love or security (or both or neither--marriage is that ridiculous), one might seek security in love or marriage (or anywhere else, God knows where), but one loves for no reason at all--or more, correctly, for a reason that one doesn't want (nor need) to know.

Of course the US wouldn't, or would say that it wouldn't. Helping the Philippines in this spat, or saying that it would, is against its national self-interest.
