MEXICO CITY â€" Federal authorities have detained an ex-police officer accused of leading the armed wing of the Juarez Cartel in northern Mexico.

Marco Antonio Guzman was captured Wednesday in the U.S. border state of Chihuahua along with two alleged accomplices. Guzman is known by several aliases, including "El Brad Pitt."

He was brought to the Mexican capital Thursday and paraded before the news media.

Police say Guzman was involved in the car bombing of a Ciudad Juarez federal police station in July.

They also accuse him of being involved in drug-trafficking operations across Chihuahua. The state is one of the worst-affected areas of the drug war, with an estimated 3,000 people killed in 2010 alone. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Inspiration & Hope / Physician, heal thyself.
June 16, 2011, 07:22:37 PM

An Aesop’s fable illustrated by Arthur Rackham

Once upon a time a Frog came forth from his home in the marshes and proclaimed to all the world that he was a learned physician, skilled in drugs and able to cure all diseases. Among the crowd was a Fox, who called out, “You a doctor! Why, how can you set up to heal others when you cannot even cure your own lame legs and blotched and wrinkled skin?”

Physician, heal thyself.

Health and Food / Re: The Truth About Calories
June 16, 2011, 05:21:32 PM
Below are ways to reduce calorie intake without having to alter your diet significantly.

Replace fizzy drinks and fruit cordials with water.
Swap whole milk for semi-skimmed, or semi-skimmed for skimmed.
Eat less lunch than usual. For example, make your own sandwich and limit the use of margarine or butter and full-fat mayonnaise (store-bought sandwiches often contain both).
Stop taking sugar in tea and coffee.
Have smaller portions of the food you enjoy.
Avoid having a second helping at dinner.
Cut out unhealthy treats â€" such as confectionary, sugary biscuits and crisps between meals.
    Cut down on alcohol intake.

All these things will influence your health in a positive way.

Finally, don't be tempted to skip breakfast â€" or any meal to lose weight. While skipping a meal will reduce your calorie intake for that hour, it will leave you much hungrier later on.

Not only are you likely to overeat to compensate, but you'll often make bad choices to fill the gap: a cereal bar is not as healthy as a bowl of cereal or as filling, leading you to 'need' something extra for lunch.

Irregular eating habits also disrupt your body's metabolism, which makes it harder to lose weight in the first place. -- More at: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/loseweight.htm

Bible Study / Parable of the Sower
June 16, 2011, 03:24:39 PM
Matthew 13:1-23

As Jesus went out to sit on the shore of a lake, large crowds gathered around him to hear him speak. There were so many people, that Jesus decided to get into a boat and drift just off shore, so that everybody could hear him.
A farmer went out to sow his seed in his fields. As he cast his seed, some fell onto the path and were eaten by the birds. Other seeds fell onto some rocky places with not much soil. Those seeds sprang up quickly but when the sun came up, they wilted and died because there was not much soil.

Other seed fell amongst thorns. The thorns grew up and choked the good plants.

Parable of the Sower fact:
The seed in this parable represents God's word.

Still other seed was cast upon good soil, producing a crop a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown!

Jesus' disciples asked him, "Why do you speak to the people with parables?"

Parable of the Sower fact:
Parable comes from the Greek word parabole, meaning "a placing beside" (or comparison).

Jesus replied that the crowd was not given the power, as the disciples had been given, to understand the mysteries of heaven. He also told them that whoever listens and puts his words to good use will receive more of that wisdom, but whoever does not put the words to good use - even what was given would be taken away.

Jesus told the disciples that in telling the crowd parables, he was fullfilling prophecy. Even though they all had ears, they couldn't hear. They all had eyes, but couldn't see. He was trying to reach them at a level they could understand, so that they could see, and hear, and understand - and then Jesus could heal them of their sins.

He continued with the parable:

Parable of the Sower fact:
Satan knows EXACTLY what he needs to do to take the word away from each one of us. For each of us it is a different thing...

When anyone hears the word of God, and does not care to understand it, the devil comes to snatch away what was told to them. This is the seed which was sown on the path that the birds devoured.

The one who hears the word and rejoices greatly for a while is like the seed that falls on the rocky places with little soil. The seed withered and died in the hot sun, like the person who falls away from God in trials and tribulations of life, instead of trusting Him.

Parable of the Sower fact:
This parable is also told in the gospels of Mark and Luke.

The seed that was thrown into the thorns that choked out the good plants, is like one who hears the word, but chooses to forget it because of the cares and riches of this world.

The person who hears the word, and persues to understand it, and then spreads it to others is like the seed that was thrown on good soil producing a crop of thirty, sixty, or a hundred fold! -- http://www.bible-stories-library.com/

Facts and Trivia / Top 10 Unbearable Phobias
June 16, 2011, 02:47:44 PM
by Josiah Plummer

Everyone has a fear of some sort, but not all of us suffer from the type of pathological fear called a “phobia.” Some phobias are well known, such as agoraphobia, which is the fear of being in an open area or in a large crowd, and Thanatophobia, which is the fear of death. (I think we can all relate to the latter.) There are other phobias that are just plain bizarre; for instance, arachibutyrophobia, which is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of one’s mouth. This list, however, is devoted to those phobias that seem inherently unbearable. In other words, fears that fundamentally affect a sufferer’s quality of life to an extreme extent. While perusing the list, let’s keep in mind that there are real people suffering from these phobias; understanding the phobias themselves will allow us to understand (and sympathize with) the tribulations of the sufferers.

10 Ambulophobia: “The fear of walking or standing.”

9 Decidophobia: “The fear of making decisions.”

8 Epistemophobia (Gnosiophobia): “The fear of knowledge.”

7 Cibophobia: “The fear of food.”

6 Somniphobia (Hypnophobia): “The fear of sleep.”

5 Acousticophobia: “The morbid fear of sounds, including your own voice.”

4 Chronophobia: “The fear of the passing of time, or more generally of time itself.”

3 Counterphobia: “The preference by a phobic for fearful situations.”

2 Phobophobia: “The morbid fear of developing a phobia.”

1 Pantophobia: “The fear of everything.”

Sugar rushes and caffeine highs followed by a depressing energy crash are what happens to your body if you drink a soda right now, but plenty of Blisstree readers actually seem to be okay with that. Some of you think it’s alarmist to compare a caffeine and sugar rush to doing drugs, and some just don’t really care about the slump they’ll find themselves in after drinking 39 grams of sugar, but what makes us really worried about a soda-slurping habit is what happens over the long term.

Here’s a quick snapshot of you, in a few years, after drinking soda on a regular basis:

You’ll Be Fatter: According to research in the Nurse’s Health Study, which monitored the health of 90,000 women for eight years, drinking a single soda every day of the week added 10 pounds over a four-year period.

You’ll Probably Have Diabetes: In the Nurses’ Health Study, women who said they drank one or more servings a day of a sugar-sweetened soft drink or fruit punch were twice as likely to have developed type 2 diabetes during the study than those who rarely consumed these beverages.

You’re Much More Likely to Develop Heart Disease: According to a study published in 2007 in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, subjects who drank a soda every day over a four-year period had a 25% chance of developing high blood sugar levels and a 32% greater chance of developing lower “good” cholesterol levels. The Nurses’ Health Study found that women who drank more than two sugary beverages per day had a 40% higher risk of heart attacks or death from heart disease than women who rarely drank sugary beverages.

You’re Probably Also Less Healthy In Other Ways: Several studies, including the 2007 study published in Circulation, suggest that diet sodas have some of the same effects on health as regular sodas, despite having none or very little of the sugar. Why? Drinking soda is typically part of an overall lifestyle that’s not very healthy: We know you don’t like us to compare drinking caffeine and sugar to substance abuse, but when it comes to your lifestyle, some think that soda is just like a gateway drug. -- http://shine.yahoo.com/

9. Yellowish Skin

He’s thinking: What yellow skin?
But it could be: Liver trouble.

Yellow skin, or jaundice, suggests the liver isn’t functioning right. Possible causes in adults include liver disease, gallstones, pancreatic cancer or a viral hepatitis infection, which causes swelling of the liver.

“Hepatitis A isn’t a disease people think of, but it’s a virus found in contaminated shellfish and can be passed on by people who prepare food and don’t wash their hands,” Dr. Pochapin says. In fact, hepatitis A is one of the most common infectious diseases that’s preventable with a vaccineâ€" worth considering for anyone who hasn’t been inoculated. Symptoms like jaundice, fever, upset stomach and fatigue usually show up within two to six weeks of exposure and get better on their own with a few weeks of rest. (And the virus doesn’t stay in your body after that.) But have him check in with his doctor, who’ll most likely want to run some tests to figure out exactly what’s going on.

10. A New Spotâ€"Mole, Freckle, Red Patchâ€" On the Skin

He’s thinking: It’ll go away.
But it could be: Skin cancer or seborrheic keratosesâ€" warty, waxy benign lesions that become more common in middle age.

Any time a new skin growth appears or an existing one changes in size, color or shape, he should see a doctor. Be especially concerned if a spot or mole gets darker, bleeds, itches or feels irritatedâ€"all of which are possible signs of skin cancer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The differences in appearance between a benign growth and skin cancerâ€"especially melanoma, the deadliest typeâ€"can be subtle. So your physician may want to take a biopsy to make a definite ID.

I know all this from firsthand experienceâ€" and when I understood what the dangers may have been, I was glad I saw my doctor. After all, nobody’s indestructible forever.

7. Constant Grumpiness

He’s thinking: I’m just under a lot of stress at work.
But it could be: Depression.

Feeling cranky and low because of work hassles or difficult times is normal, but it should dissipate within a few days. With clinical depression, downbeat irritability lasts weeks at a time. “It’s different from run-of-the-mill blues and time for him to talk to his doctor if you’re saying to him, ‘You haven’t been acting like the person I think you really are for weeks’ or he’s lost interest in activities he used to enjoy or isn’t performing at work,” Dr. Shindel says.

Talk therapy and antidepressant medication are the options his doctor will likely suggest first. But if he has symptoms such as fatigue, low sex drive and loss of muscle mass, Dr. Shindel advises getting a blood test for low testosterone, which is sometimes the root cause of depression, especially in men over 40. Testosterone replacement in the form of gel, skin patches or injections can reverse the symptoms, but he should first talk to his doctor carefully about his medical history and the potential risks of testosterone therapy.

8. Frequent Urination

He’s thinking: I’m drinking too much coffee.
But it could be: Type 2 diabetes or an enlarged prostate.

It might be the coffeeâ€"when he’s actually drinking it. But if he often gets up to go twice or more during the night, his body could be trying to get rid of excess blood sugar that’s built up because it can’t get into cellsâ€"the problem that defines diabetes. He should first try adjusting what or when he drinks at night to see if that leads to fewer wee-hour trips to the bathroom. “If he still urinates more than he did a month ago, he should get his blood sugar checked, especially if he also has increased thirst, another red flag for diabetes,” Dr. Miner says. Diabetes can usually be controlled with changes in diet and exercise, often combined with medication.

If he’s also feeling like he can’t empty his bladder completely and/or is having a slow or weak stream, dribbling and having trouble getting urine flow started, the problem may be a growing prostate. This small gland surrounds the tube that carries urine out of the bladder, so an increase in size can put the squeeze on urine flowâ€"a common problem in middle-aged and older men. (In men under 50, symptoms could be due to a urinary tract infection.)

Though painless, an enlarged prostate can eventually get worse and lead to acute urinary retention, where he suddenly can’t urinate at all, which is an emergency that often leads to surgery. Treatment ranges from exercises to strengthen muscles in the pelvic floor to medications that relieve symptoms or shrink the prostate. Prostate cancer is also a possibility, especially for men over 50, and if the doctor suspects that, he’ll do a rectal exam and draw blood to check PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels; higher-than-normal results may indicate prostate enlargement, an infection or cancer.

5. Trouble Down Below

He’s thinking: There’s a pill for this.
But it could be: An early warning of cardiovascular disease.

“The latest studies find that men in their 40s and 50s with erectile dysfunction may be two to five years away from a cardiovascular event like a heart attack,” Dr. Miner says. A recent study at the Mayo Clinic found that men who had ED in their 40s were 50 times more likely to have heart trouble down the road than men who didn’t. The artery leading to the penis is about half the diameter of the one feeding the heart, so experts think that restricted blood flow from atherosclerosis shows up early down below. An EKG or stress test can identify cardiac problems and a Doppler ultrasound (usually from a urologist) can test blood flow in penile blood vessels.

“The first sign of ED is usually trouble maintaining an erection during sex or not having normal morning erections,” Dr. Miner says. The good news is that the onset of ED, if it’s caused by cardiovascular disease, suggests your man may have a window of opportunity to treat heart disease before it becomes a serious problem.

6. Daytime Fatigue

He’s thinking: I should go to sleep earlier.
But it could be: Obstructive sleep apnea.

Spending more time in bed won’t help if fatigue is due to this condition, in which the airway narrows or is blocked during sleep, cutting off breathing and disrupting slumber five to 30 times an hour. “Everyone has a night here and there when he doesn’t sleep well. But if the fatigue doesn’t go away even when he can catch up on rest, sleep apnea could be putting him at risk for health problems such as heart attack, arrhythmias, stroke or even heart failure,” Dr. Shindel says. A sign he’s chronically tired: falling asleep while doing activities during waking hours. “It’s not normal to fall asleep during usual waking hours just because you’re in a dark room,” Dr. Shindel says. Sleep apnea is especially common in overweight men and heavy snorers, but can be treated with breathing devices such as a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), an apparatus that you wear at night to keep airways open. Losing weight and surgery to widen the airway can also help.
#54535
3. Persistent Pain On One side of the Abdomen

He’s thinking: I probably pulled a muscle.
But it could be: A kidney stone or tumor.

One-sided pain that goes away probably is a side stitch or pulled muscle and nothing to worry about. “But if a dull ache is persistent, it should be evaluated by a physician,” says Dr. Kaplan. “It could be many things, but a tumor is one of the first possibilities we consider.” An ache from a tumor won’t likely move around, and may get better if he takes an over-the-counter pain relieverâ€"but will keep coming back. “Any abdominal pain that doesn’t resolve within three days deserves to be checked out.”

Sharp, excruciating pain that hits suddenly and doesn’t improve within an hour warrants a trip to the ER. “If it’s a kidney stone, the pain will radiate from a specific point and can be intense enough to make you vomit,” Dr. Kaplan says. “I’ve had one myself, and it’s so horrible it makes you want to die.” The problem could also be appendicitis, a perforated ulcer or a hernia, so it’s important to get checked out.

4. Toilet-Time Blood

He’s thinking: Must be something I ate.
But it could be: A kidney stone or bladder cancer if blood is in urine; colon cancer if blood is in stools.

Bright red spots on tissue after wiping are likely from hemorrhoids. But blood in stools that have become narrower and thinner than usual (like the width of a pencil) could be a sign of cancer. Black, tarry stools might also indicate stomach bleeding from an ulcer. His doctor will likely examine the GI tract via a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy to nail down the problem.

Blood in urine may show up as a subtle pink hue, but he shouldn’t dismiss minuscule amounts or chalk it up to eating beets. “You’d have to eat a whole lot for that to happen,” says Mark Pochapin, MD, director of the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at NewYorkâ€"Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. Assume any reddish color is blood: One drop can turn the bowl pink. “Even microscopic amounts are a warning,” says Martin Miner, MD, codirector of the Men’s Health Center at The Miriam Hospital and clinical associate professor at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. “If he can actually see red color, he should definitely be evaluated.”
#54536
Experts agree that not every symptom warrants a trip to the doctor, but some seemingly minor signs shouldn’t be toyed with (in men or women). We asked physicians to tell us the most serious symptoms that often go ignoredâ€"and why they shouldn’t be.

1. Feeling Tongue-Tied

He’s thinking: I’m having a senior moment.
But it could be: A stroke.

When a clot, injury, narrow blood vessel or other problem restricts blood flow to the brain, the result can be a TIAâ€"a transient ischemic attack, which impairs brain function and can make speech difficult. It’s different from the tip-of-the-tongue reaching for an elusive word. “He might find that words can’t come out at all, or he’ll speak words that are different from the ones he intended or mumble things that don’t make sense,” says Steven Kaplan, MD, director of the Iris Cantor Men’s Health Center now under construction at NewYorkâ€"Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Such symptoms warrant an immediate call to the doctor or trip to the ER. Mini-strokes usually last a few minutes and symptoms typically disappear within an hour, but having a TIA means you’re at immediate risk of a more massive stroke. Men have a slightly higher risk of TIAs than women, and risks go up with age, especially after 55.

2. Shortness of Breath

He’s thinking: I’m really out of shape.
But it could be: An impending heart attack.

Shortness of breath with exertion such as walking up a flight of stairs could be a sign that the heart muscle isn’t getting enough oxygenâ€"a hallmark of coronary heart disease, which men age 55 and over are at an increased risk for.

“Any condition that makes breathing a struggle, including asthma and allergies, is exacerbated by exertion,” Dr. Shindel says. “But if shortness of breath seems to be getting worse each time, we worry about the heart.” Breathing that’s labored and doesn’t improve warrants a call to 911. An electrocardiogram or EKG (which measures the electrical activity of your heart), a sonogram or ultrasound of the heart, and chest X-rays can help diagnose or rule out a heart problem.

Incompatible nationalities

Going to the United States to give birth and taking a foreign born child back to China usually proves relatively easy. The difficult part starts only later, as Song Jingwen is starting to understand. Because her son has a U.S. passport, the law does not allow him to be registered in his mother's local area, which means that he will not be automatically admitted to Chinese schools. Song will have to register him as a foreigner, and pay an extra fee. His access to education and health care also faces a lot of constraints.

"Some parents obtain fake birth certificates for their children, or cheat the Chinese Embassy to get them Chinese passports. But then they can't get visas or go abroad," Song explains. She is still hesitating on what to do next. If Song gets her son a fake hukou (the Chinese registration system), which would make it easier for him to go to a local school, she fears that all the efforts she has made up to now could be in vain.

A few years ago, Zhao Yong easily obtained a Shanghai hukou for his American born child. "Every time we want to go to the States, we have to get the Hongkong-Macao permit to go though Chinese customs, go to Hong Kong, then fly to the United States and enter the country with the American passport," Zhao Yong says. "The trip is a little bit complicated, but if we fly directly from Shanghai to the States, we won't be able to hide the truth."

Under Chinese law, double nationality is prohibited. According to the American Embassy, once a child has obtained a Chinese hukou, he is considered to have given up his American nationality. The United States is not the only country with strict regulations. A child born in Hong Kong doesn't get the Hong Kong resident identity card right away, but has to go back to Hong Kong regularly - every year or two until he is 18 - in order to register as a "returned resident," and keep his nationality.

The so-called 'citizen's welfare'

According to the 14th Amendment to the U.S. constitution (ratified in 1868), anyone born in United States automatically becomes an American citizen and obtains access to public education, university loans, voting, and so on... Even so, if one does not work in America or pay taxes after the age of 15, one can only enjoy very limited access to U.S. welfare benefits. "The system doesn't totally exclude people who don't pay taxes here, but those who do not pay as much tax as Americans do cannot expect the same benefits. But each state has different regulations," says Mr. Yang, a Chinese born man who works in New Jersey and has a green card.

"Giving birth to a child in the States is a wonderful dream, but a very costly one too," Song Jingwen concludes. "People who choose to go down this path must know that they will not be paying only for birthing and post birthing care, but they will also be paying a lot more for the whole life." -- http://news.yahoo.com/

World Daily News / China's "Born in the USA" Frenzy
June 16, 2011, 08:15:24 AM
By ZHANG YAN / ECONOMIC OBSERVER / WORLDCRUNCH â€" Wed Jun 15, 1:05 am ET

When Liu Li boarded a plane for the United States, she had a little bit of makeup on, was wearing a loose dress, and had her hair up. She tried to hold her handbag in front of her belly in a natural way, just as the middleman had taught her. She was trying to look as calm as any wealthy Chinese lady would look when travelling abroad. But Liu Li couldn't help feeling terribly nervous: she was six months pregnant when she left for the United States, where she wanted to give birth to an American citizen.

Liu Li knew that going through customs would be a lot easier than obtaining a U.S. visa. In order to obtain the tourist visa that enabled her to go to America for the delivery, she had to carefully choose her clothes, and spend a lot of time practicing her walking and interview techniques. She memorized a host of details about her hotel booking and about famous sight-seeing spots so as to convince the Embassy officer that she was just another Chinese woman going shopping in the States.

The temptation of a 'born in the USA' child

Giving birth to a child abroad is not a privilege reserved to the stars and the very wealthy. An increasing number of expectant middle-class parents also fancy giving their children passports that they can feel proud of. "The return on investment is higher than robbing a bank," the consultancy agent tells women such as Liu. When Chinese children are born in America, they automatically become U.S. citizens. Once they reach 21, their parents will be able to apply for green cards and emigrate.

Those who would prefer a closer destination can go to Hong Kong, whose passport gives access to more than 120 countries without the need of a visa. Advantages include the fact that children will receive bilingual education (which will give them a foothold in the international world), and the fact that they will also enjoy the preferential policies for going to Chinese universities.

After consulting quite a few agencies for expectant mothers, Liu Li chose a reputable one. Airplane tickets, fees for labor, pre- and post-delivery care cost her roughly 20,000. Since most airlines refuse to accept women passengers who are more than 32 weeks pregnant, Liu Li set off for America when she was six months pregnant and then checked into a Chinese birthing center in California.

After her arrival, Liu Li realized that the area was full of facilities set up for Chinese women like herself. On the limited occasions when Liu Li goes to the Punete Hill Mall near her birthing center - the facility limits walks outside its premises to three per week, each time for about three hours - Liu Li bumps into lots of pregnant Chinese women. Birthing centers such as Liu Li's, which are mostly situated in America's beautiful west coastal areas, operate without a business license, and try to be as discreet as possible. In April, a number of illegally converted maternity centers in Los Angeles were discovered and shut down, which makes Liu Li very nervous.

Volcano ash turns Asian eclipse blood red
  â€" 55 mins ago

SYDNEY â€" Asian and African night owls were treated to a lunar eclipse, and ash in the atmosphere from a Chilean volcano turned it blood red for some viewers.

The Sydney Observatory said the eclipse was to begin at 3:25 a.m. Thursday (1:25 p.m. EDT, 5:25 p.m. GMT Wednesday) and last until after 5 a.m.

Scientists said the specific phenomenon happening Thursday â€" known as a "deep lunar eclipse" â€" often exudes a coppery color. But the intensity of the color depends on the amount of ash and dust in the atmosphere.

Luckily for moon-gazers, there was plenty of ash in the air so the moon appeared orange or red, especially in Asia. Air travelers haven't been so lucky: The ash has grounded hundreds of flights around the region.

Scientists said the eclipse could be safely observed with the naked eye. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure â€" self-determined, self-motivated, often risky â€" forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind â€" and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” â€" Mark Jenkins

German E.coli outbreak claims first child victim
Tue Jun 14, 2:37 pm ET

BERLIN (Reuters) â€" Germany's E.coli outbreak claimed its first child fatality on Tuesday when a two-year-old died from the bacteria in the northern city of Hanover, taking the death toll to 37.

German health authorities have linked the epidemic, the deadliest of its kind in modern history, to contaminated bean sprouts and shoots from a German organic farm sold to consumers and restaurants across the country for eating in salads.

Germany's main disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute, said the number of new infections appeared to be on the wane.

More than 3,200 people have so far been taken ill with the E.coli strain, about a quarter of them developing a complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which affects the blood, kidneys and nervous system.

While cases have been reported in other countries, all have been traced back to visits to northern Germany and all but one of the fatalities have been in Germany.

The two-year-old child victim, who was not named, had been undergoing treatment for complications caused by the deadly new strain of E.coli at a Hannover hospital, along with the child's father and two siblings. There was no word on their condition. -- http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110614/ts_nm/us_ecoli
