He credits his interest in fungi to another fascinating aspect of many mushrooms around the world: their hallucinogenic properties. During college, Stamets spent a lot of time in the Ohio woods, where he first tried psilocybin mushrooms. They had a profound effect on him, and after his first experience, his persistent stutter went away. He later quit a logging job, because the work was destroying mushroom habitat, and began studying fungi at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

Since then, his research has led to fascinating discoveries of multiple possible purposes for fungi, including nuclear decontamination, water filtration, biofuels, increasing agricultural yields, pest control and medicines.

Research is also shedding light on potential benefits of the psychotropic properties of mushrooms, such as the 144 species that contain psilocybin. Indigenous people have long used hallucinogenic mushrooms for ceremonial, spiritual and psychological purposesâ€"and with good reason, it turns out. Psilocybin has been shown to improve the brain’s connectivity. Researchers are finding the chemical can help combat depression, anxiety, fear and other disorders, and increase creativity and openness to new experience. This makes them potentially beneficial for post-traumatic stress, addiction and palliative care treatments.

We humans have made a lot of technological and scientific advances, and this sometimes gives us the sense that we’re above or outside of nature, that we can do things better. Sometimes it takes a fascinating lifeform like a mushroom to shake us from our hubris and show us how much we have yet to learn about the world and our place in it.

Research by Suzanne Simard at the University of British Columbia found that Douglas fir and paper birch trees transfer carbon back and forth through the mycelia, and other research shows they can also transfer nitrogen and phosphorous. Simard believes older, larger trees help younger trees through this process. She found that the smaller trees’ survival often depends on large “mother trees” and that cutting down these tree elders leaves seedlings and smaller trees more vulnerable.

Researchers in China found trees attacked by harmful fungi are able to warn other trees through the mycelia networks, and University of Aberdeen biologists found they can also warn other plants of aphid attacks.

It all adds to our growing understanding of how interconnected everything on our planet is, and how our actionsâ€"such as cutting down large “mother” treesâ€"can have unintended negative consequences that cascade through ecosystems.

Scientists are also finding that fungi can be useful to humans beyond providing food and helping us make cheese, bread, beer and wine. Stamets believes mushrooms can be employed to clean up oil spills, defend against weaponized smallpox, break down toxic chemicals like PCBs and decontaminate areas exposed to radiation.

There’s far more to mushrooms than the stems and caps that poke above ground. Most of the organism is a mass of thin underground threads called mycelia. These filaments form networks that help plants, including trees, connect to each other, through structures called mycorrhizae.

Scientists believe about 90 per cent of land-based plants are involved in this mutually beneficial relationship with fungi. Plants deliver food to the mushroom, created by photosynthesis, and the filaments, in turn, assist the plants to absorb water and minerals and to produce chemicals that help them resist disease and other threats. And, of course, a myriad of other life forms benefit from the healthy plants.

The structure and function of the mycelial networks and their ability to facilitate communication between physically separated plants led mycologist Paul Stamets to call them “Earth’s natural Internet.” He’s also noted their similarity to brain cell networks. According to a Discover article, “Brains and mycelia grow new connections, or prune existing ones, in response to environmental stimuli. Both use an array of chemical messengers to transmit signals throughout a cellular web.”

Until 1969, biologists thought mushrooms and other fungi were plants. They’re actually more closely related to animals, but with enough differences that they inhabit their own distinct classification.

This and more recent findings about these mysterious organisms illustrate how much we have yet to learn about the complexities of the natural world. New research reveals mushrooms can even help plants communicate, share nutrients and defend themselves against disease and pests.

(BANAT NEWS)

A stray female dog from Campinas, Brazil, is being called an “angel sent from the heavens” after the homeless pet saved the life of a newborn baby boy.

The dog who was scavenging for food in a garbage dump came across the newborn who still had the umbilical cord attached. The smart dog gently carried the baby in her mouth out of the dump, walked a few hundred feet to the closest house and handed the baby over to helpful humans hands. There, as if asking “please help him,” the dog showed the humans the baby and left him to their care.

The home residents rushed the baby to the nearest hospital and doctors carefully cared for the tiny newborn. Medical representatives said the baby boy is in great condition and was unharmed by the dog.Local residents are in disbelief that a mother would be willing to dump her newborn in a dump just minutes after giving birth. Authorities are now looking for her, the worst mother ever. Thanks to this gentle stray dog, the baby boy is alive today.

Way nakitang timailhan nga dunay agi sa sunog.

Matag panahon nga iya ning buwagan, mohulga kini nga magpakamatay.

History / Panty Raids
November 03, 2015, 07:15:55 PM
A lot of fads of the 1930s like goldfish swallowing and six-day racing saw their popularity diminish drastically thanks to World War II. Then, after the war, came a period of calmness as people eagerly anticipated what would become the next big thing. In 1949, they got their answerâ€"college boys breaking into the girls’ dorms and making off with their underwear.

Most of us are familiar with panty raids from college movies, but they reached the peak of their popularity in the 1950s. The first instance of this happening was in 1949 at Augustana College in Illinois. The goal there was not to steal underwear, but just to cause general commotion. However, some pranksters made off with a few pairs of lingerie, and the term “panty raid” was used by the press.

Thanks to the extensive coverage by the media, panty raids become a popular college prank all over the nation. By 1952, it was an “epidemic” plaguing over 50 different universities. College kids were not deterred even though they risked expulsions, arrests, and even tear gas attacks on several occasions. The female students were usually aware of the raids and sometimes even assisted the boys. This was more about rebelling against authority and sexual repression than it was about college kids being little pervs. The University of California, Berkeley, holds the dubious honor of “largest panty raid”â€"in 1956, over 2,000 students took part in a panty raid that caused over $20,000 in damages. -- http://listverse.com/

He said that at every start of the 15 meetings held with Chinese officials, they would repeatedly assert China’s “indisputable sovereignty over South China Sea.”

Cuisia said every such meeting with Chinese officials would only last less than five minutes each time.

Cuisia also believes the U.S. can no longer return to the Philippines even with a “basing” agreement but on a “rotating” setup under the Visiting Forces Agreement or under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

He said Philippines can never be beholden to China either although Beijing is Manila’s largest trading partner in 2014.

“We are not a debtor to China,” Cuisia said.

“The decision was unanimous in favor of the Philippines,” Cuisia told the Filipino community members here.

Cuisia said the decision was a clear victory for the Philippine government officials led Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario during the hearing at the Hague.

According to Cuisia, Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio had invoked the Washington Treaty of 1900 as one of the pieces of evidence in arguing for the arbitral tribunal to assume jurisdiction of the case.

He described Carpio’s research on the matter as the “most comprehensive research on the issue.”

During the forum, Cuisia debunked the claims of China that the Philippines never settled the issue bilaterally.

The treaty made the Philippines a territory of the U.S. following the defeat of Spain. On July 4, 1946, in the ashes of World War II, the U.S. granted the Philippines independence.

On Thursday, the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled it had jurisdiction over the case brought against China by the Philippines, which wants the tribunal to define the country’s maritime entitlements under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Both the Philippines and China have both ratified, should be used to resolve the maritime dispute over isolated reefs and islets in the South China Sea.

China has refused to participate in the proceedings, arguing the case is about sovereignty in which the court has no jurisdiction.

CHICAGO (Philippine Star) â€" A little-known Washington Treaty of 1900 that amended the 1898 Treaty of Paris will be among the documents the Philippine government will present at the hearing of the arbitral tribunal in the Hague on Nov. 23.

Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Cuisia revealed Friday that the Washington Treaty included the Spratly Islands as part of the Philippines after it was discovered that the map under the Treaty of Paris had left out the disputed islands.

If this treaty is confirmed, the United States will lose its neutrality in the South China Sea dispute between the Philippines and China because it was a signatory to the Washington Treaty, Cuisia pointed out.

Under the Treaty of Paris on Dec. 10, 1898, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States for $20 million.

The barangays whom Carillo have already given bottled water to include Barangays Calamba, San Nicolas Proper, Pahina San Nicolas and Babag, among others.

Asked about this, Mayor Michael Rama said yesterday he doesn’t want to comment about the matter.

“If it is over, then it is over. I don’t have to comment about it if they are probably being creative and what we call possessing some initiative. If it will be something against them, I don’t know. Whether it will favor them, for sure it will. Lose some, win some na siya,” he said.

It was Rama who issued the directive to prohibit the hanging of tarpaulins of candidates running for next year’s polls inside cemeteries.

Sought for comment about this, Carillo told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that he has been giving at least 100 bottles each to the different south district barangays since last year for their activities.

However, he said he has no hold on how the barangays are going to use them.

“Di man na intended solely for kalag-kalag. Nangutana sila nako kung pwede ba manghatag, I told them naa ra man na ninyo basta I already gave the bottled waters to you (It’s not intended solely for the kalag-kalag. Those are for their activities. I have no idea how they’re using it because it’s already their. They asked me if it’s okay yo distribute them, I told them it’s up to them since I already gave them to you),” he said.

Carillo said he has been giving water to the villages for their barangay assemblies, women’s activities and zumba activities, among others.

The number of bottles he is giving to the barangays depends on how much they ask for.

The councilor said he used his personal money for this project.

Carillo said he is not taking advantage of the huge crowd going to cemeteries by distributing bottled water to push for his candidacy in the 2016 polls.

“Di na take advantage kay wa man koy gibutang diha nga ‘for congressman.’ Councilor man na akong gibutang diha (It’s not taking advantage since I did not put something like ‘for congressman.’ I only put Councilor),” he said. “Ako unya nang ilisan (I will soon change that),” he jokingly adds.

Controversy.  Bottles bearing Councilor Carillo’s name cause a stir in social media, but the councilor says he spent his own money for it and distributed them to the barangays for their activities. (Photo taken from Pulitika sa Sugbo Facebook page)

BOTTLED water bearing the name of Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo were allegedly distributed in cemeteries during the observance of the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

Photos of the bottled waters were shared over social media by Facebook user “Pulitika sa Sugbo.”

The bottles have a green print that says “Gerry A. Carillo. Councilor-Cebu City South. Padayon ang Serbisyo.”These were bottled by Voda Water and Ice Ventures, a business owned by the councilor.

Because the mayor prohibits putting images in cemeteries, thus someone found a way),” reads the caption of the photos.

Carillo is Team Rama’s candidate for the south congressional seat in the 2016 elections.

Ana Police Station. (Jeepy P. Compio)

While launching the project, Modi had said, “Every Indian regrets Sardar Patel did not become the first prime minister. Had he been the first prime minister, the country’s fate and face would have been completely different.”

Patel is often referred to as the “Iron Man of India” and widely acknowledged for coercing India’s princely provinces to join the Union of India, soon after independence in 1947. But, as Reuters wrote in 2013, “many in Gujarat feel Patel’s legacy has been neglected by the Congress party, and Modi has been quick to use that to his advantage.”

In July 2014, the construction of the project was awarded to local infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) after it bid the lowest among other companies. The project is expected to cost Rs3,000 crore ($770 million), making it one of the costliest statues in India.

“All details pertaining to project operations are internal to our company, and are bound by contracts with our clients,” L&T told Outlook. L&T is yet to respond to a questionnaire from Quartz.

Opposition parties have meanwhile mocked the government for outsourcing the statue to China.

“The Modi government, which talks of Make in India, has been unable to get the statue of Sardar Patel, the builder of modern India, built in the country,” Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a Congress party spokesperson, said.

By April 2018, India will be home to the world’s tallest statue.

The colossal monument, known as the Statue of Unity, will be a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a firebrand Indian freedom fighter and the country’s first home minister. When completed, the Statue of Unity will be 182 metres tallâ€"or twice the height of the Statue of Liberty.

But Indians won’t be building it.

Instead, 700-odd workers in the eastern Chinese province of Nanchang will smelt and cast components for the statue at the Jiangxi Tongqing Metal Handicrafts Company, the world’s biggest foundry. Many of them are expected to come to India by the end of the year to help with the construction at Sadhu Bet, a river island in the western Indian city of Vadodara.

“We are at present making a 30-feet bronze statue here in our studio in Noida,” Ram V. Sutar, the 90-year-old Delhi-based designer of the statue, told Outlook magazine. “The main statue will be made in China and I will go there to supervise it. We are making the prototype and in China they will enlarge it before casting. It will be made in parts and assembled here.”

The making of this statue is in stark contrast with Modi’s ambitious Make in India campaign, under which he plans to scale up manufacturing in the country. It was Modi himself who had launched the ambitious Statue of Unity project in 2013, in the run-up to the Indian general election of 2014.

CEBU CITY, Philippines â€" Councilor Dave Tumulak, head of the Cebu City’s Command Center, confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Chinese deputy consul Sun Shan and finance officer Hui Li have died at a Cebu City hospital where they were rushed after they were shot at a restaurant.

The police said the two were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

He said Sun was hit in the neck and Li  in the head during the shooting inside a function room of the Lighthouse Restaurant along General Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City.

He said Sun was a deputy consul in the Chinese consulate in this city while Hui was the consulate’s finance officer.

Cebu’s Consul General Song Rong Hua, who was also wounded, was in stable condition, said Tumulak.

The three were part of nine  Chinese nationals who were having lunch inside the function room past 1:30 p.m. when shots were fired.

Chief Insp. Romeo Santander, City Intelligence Branch of the Cebu City Police Office, said two suspects were detained.  They were  Li Qing Liang and  his wife, Gou Jing.

Based on the footage of the closed circuit television camera, Li walked out of the restaurant shortly after the shooting. He left behind his firearm, a .45 caliber pistol. The firearm was later hidden by his wife.

The couple were arrested at the Chinese consulate office at the Cebu Business Park during a hot pursuit operation, said Santander.  SFM

Things are pretty dry in California at the moment. The Golden State is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts on record, a natural disaster that’s lasted four long years. In fact, things are getting so bad that earlier this year, Gov. Jerry Brown issued mandatory water cutbacks of 25 percent. And that’s pretty bad news if you’re a blade of grass. Thanks to the shortage, Californians can only water their lawns two or three times a week (down from the usual four or five), and lawns across the state are now a nasty brown.

Hoping to keep things nice and tidy, some Californians have torn up their lawns, replacing the grass with rocks, native plants, or artificial substitutes. But if people aren’t willing to tear up their yards, there is one inventive solution. Enter David Bartlett, the brains behind Xtreme Green Grass. Give Bartlett a phone call, and he’ll show up at your home armed with a sprayer and plenty of paint. That’s right. For 25 cents per square foot, Bartlett and his crew will paint your grass green.

“It’s just like hair dye,” Bartlett explained to The Sacramento Bee. He also says his paint is all-natural and won’t harm the environment in any way. And according to Bartlett, his method is a whole lot cheaper than replacing your entire lawn with native plants. Xtreme Green Grass also offers a special service around Christmastime. If you want that winter wonderland look, Bartlett will paint your lawn white to give it that festive feel. True, David might find himself out of a job once it starts raining again, but at the moment, business is booming. -- http://listverse.com/

The Australian government has pledged to kill two million feral cats and create new safe havens for native animals in an attempt to improve the fortunes of 20 mammal, 20 bird and 30 plant species that are at risk of extinction.

Federal environment minister, Greg Hunt, unveiled a five-year threatened species strategy at Melbourne zoo on Thursday, promising to “halt and reverse the threats to our magnificent endemic species”.

The first 10 mammal species identified for priority action are the numbat, mala, mountain pygmy-possum, greater bilby, golden bandicoot, brush-tailed rabbit-rat, eastern bettong, western quoll, Kangaroo Island dunnart and eastern barred bandicoot.

A further two â€" the leadbeater’s possum, Victoria’s faunal emblem that was recently listed as critically endangered, and the central rock rat â€" will get “emergency interventions”, Hunt said.

The environment minister, who announced the bird species that will receive help on Wednesday, said that two million feral cats, a major cause of native mammal and bird declines, will be wiped out “humanely” by 2020.

450-Year-Old Church Emerges From Reservoir As Water Levels Drop
The church was built in 1564 and abandoned two centuries later.

A drought in southern Mexico has caused water levels to fall so much that the remains of a long-abandoned, 16th-century church are now visible above the waterline.

The Temple of Santiago, also known as the Temple of Quechula, normally rests under nearly 100 feet of water since the completion of a dam in 1966 created the Nezahualcoyotl reservoir in Chiapas. But the drought has caused water levels to drop by more than 80 feet, leading to eerie sights such as this one:
