3 Pedigree Breeding

Pedigree breeding of dogs has attracted a lot of attention in the past few years and many think it is cruel and unfair to the welfare of the animal because of the effects on the lifespan of the animal. In 2008 the BBC dropped the dog show Crufts over concerns about breeding practices leaving dogs with debilitating conditions and inherited genetic disease such as a prize-winning Cavalier King Charles suffering from syringomyelia which meant that its skull was too small for its brain and also pugs suffering epilepsy.
It is not known how many dogs worldwide suffer the genetic effects of extreme pedigree breeding but the debilitating effect is well known. Because of the lack of genetic variation, birth defects and inherited diseases in breeds such as deafness in Dalmatians, heart disease in Boxer dogs and hip dysplasia (abnormal hip joint development) in German Shepherd dogs has become extremely common.

4 Animals in Sport

There are many types of sport in which animals are used for; hunting being the most recognized and debated. One of the most recently debated has been fox hunting in the United Kingdom which was outlawed in 2004 against large protests and backlash from hunters who wished for the sport to continue using live foxes. Over 250 million animals are killed each year by hunting in the US alone and this does not include the millions of animal figures that are not maintained by state wildlife agencies.
Animals in sport also include Bullfighting which is still practiced under Spanish and Portuguese traditions. Cockfighting is now illegal but legal fights still take place around the world including cow fighting and camel wrestling.
Horse and dog racing are also very popular around the world, attracting many people for legal gambling but even this has attracted debate. Thousands of greyhounds die each year from racing injuries or exhaustion and over 800 racehorses die each year from fatal injuries on US racetracks alone.

5 Animals as Food

It is estimated that worldwide, 140 billion animals are killed for human consumption ever year. The UK, which has a projected 2009 population of 61,126,832, consumed an amazing 2.5 billion animals every year alone.

Official figures show that UK abattoirs slaughter 900 million poultry, and 30 million cattle, sheep and pigs every year. These figures do not include imported meat; the UK is probably a net importer so it is likely that they consume close to 1 billion farm animals a year. Tonnage figures from the Marine Fisheries Agency together with estimates for average weight of fish suggest that, in addition, about 1,500 million sea fish and 80 million farmed salmon are consumed.

It’s easy to see why vegetarians and vegans are prominent campaigners for animal rights. Animals on factory farms have no legal protection from cruelty that could be illegal if it were inflicted on dogs or cats, including neglect, mutilations, genetic manipulation, drug regimens that cause chronic pain and crippling, transport through all weather extremes and gruesome and violent slaughter for human consumption.

6 Animals in Medicine

High numbers of animals are used each year worldwide for their use in medicine. China is probably the most notable for its use of endangered tiger.

Animals used in traditional medicine are tigers, leopards, sharks, saiga antelope, elephants, rhinoceros, pangolins, tortoises, seahorses, musk deer, as well as 7 of the 8 species of bear. The Asiatic Black Bear (more commonly known as the Moon Bear) are kept in captivity on Bear Bile Farms to enable the regular extraction of their bile acid.

Tiger bones, skin, fat, whiskers, tail, penises and gall bladders among other parts are believed to cure ailments, keep black magic at bay and possess aphrodisiac properties. It is estimated that there are approximately 5,000 wild tigers left, only 5% of the population number that were alive in the 1900s. About 75 percent are in India while less than 50 are believed to be found in China’s forests. The United States is home to some 10,000 captive tigers, owned by zoos, sanctuaries and private individuals.

7 Seal Clubbing

Seal hunting has drawn growing media attention due to the disturbing images of seals and their pups being clubbed to death. The main sealing states are Canada, Greenland, Namibia, Norway and Russia although it is Canada that has gathered the most controversy with celebrities such as Paul McCartney and former wife, Heather Mills speaking out against it. In Canada 2006, 325,000 harp seals, as well as 10,000 hooded seals and 10,400 grey seals were killed. An additional 10,000 animals were allocated for hunting by Aboriginal peoples. Canadian law forbids the killing of pup seals until they have began molting at 12-15 days.

While the steal trade is an extremely controversial issue, many livelihoods depend on the seal trade. The total Canadian seal product exports were valued at $18 million (CAD) in 2006. Of this, $5.4 million went to the EU, although in 2007, Belgium became the first EU state to ban seal products. In 2009 the EU parliament successfully voted to ban the import of seal products. Denmark, Romania and Austria abstained form the law passed by the EU council on July 27, 2009.

8 Dolphin and Whale Slaughter

Every year, hundreds or even thousands of dolphin and small whale are rounded up and forced into a small hidden cove in Taiji where they are slaughtered in the worlds largest scale kill of its kind, lasting up to six months. Once trapped inside the cove the animals are killed by having their throats slashed or by being speared.  Media images of the event often show the usual blue waters of the cove blood red and some even go further to show the animals sounding in distress. Animal campaigners have challenged the Japanese government to change its laws but whale meat and counterfeit dolphin meat sold as whale meat help to keep this horrific event continuing while the Japanese governments response has been using pest control as an explanation.

9 Animal Testing

Some people will say animal testing is necessary in the furthering of medical treatment for humans but the other side of this argument is that animal testing is completely unacceptable and treatment for humans should be only be tested on humans.

It is estimated that 50 to 100 million vertebrate animals worldwide are used annually in animal testing. Although much larger numbers of invertebrates are used and the use of flies and worms as model organisms is very important, experiments on invertebrates are largely unregulated and not included in statistics. Most animals are euthanized after being used in an experiment.

Most research is carried out within universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, farms, defense establishments, and commercial facilities that provide animal-testing services to industry.

Supporters of the practice, such as the British Royal Society, argue that virtually every medical achievement in the 20th century relied on the use of animals in some way, with the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences arguing that even sophisticated computers are unable to model interactions between molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and the environment, making animal research necessary in many areas. Despite this some scientists and animal rights organizations, such as PETA and BUAV, question the legitimacy of it, arguing that it is cruel, poorly regulated and that medical progress is being held back by misleading animal models among other reasons. Regulation on animal testing varies within various countries.

10 Fur Trade

Worldwide it’s estimated that 40-50 million animals are killed every year for their fur, including raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, and chinchillas. The fur trade has gathered much protest from campaigners for the inhumane way the animals are reared and killed, often in cages where they suffer from numerous physical and behavioral abnormalities induced by the stress of caging conditions and then killed methods that preserve the pelt, such as gassing, neck-breaking and anal electrocution.

Recently China has come under attack from extremist campaigners such as PETA and media over the cruel photos and videos of dogs and cats being kept in awful conditions and then bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, strangled with wire nooses, and even skinned alive so that their fur can be turned into trim and trinkets. Fur from China is often mislabeled as that from another species and sold throughout the world so it is difficult to know for certain where the fur you are buying came from.

Animal rights are widely known and accepted in western culture but despite this there are topics and events which happen every year that often cause much debate and controversy on the public and media forums. From high profile support from celebrities, outspoken models from the fashion world and animal campaigners, animal rights is an issue that has sparked outrage and even government debate. This is a list of 10 widely discussed topics of animal use that some support openly, while others refuse to accept them under any circumstances.

Seeking UN support

Meanwhile, Filipino LGBTs are seeking the support of the United Nations in their fight for human rights.
“Rights violations allegedly committed by the government and private parties against transgender Filipinos may soon be subject to international legal censure and corrective measures, if we get the attention of the United Nations,” Cye Reyes during an LGBT forum here.

“Already, three Filipino transwomen has filed a suit with the UN Human Rights Committee under the First Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” said lawyer Evalyn Ursua.

The suit focused on the refusal of the government to recognize the change of their gender in legal documents and to address discrimination in the public and private sectors.

Ursua said she is confident that the UN Human Rights Committee will make findings of human rights violations against transsexuals by the Philippine government and direct it to pass laws and undertake other measures addressing gender identity and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Carol Galvez of the Cordillera People’s Alliance and Oscar Atadero of ProGay Philippines both cited the need for more advocacy highlighting the needs of transgenders.

Galvez zeroed in on the rising incidence of hate crimes committed against transgenders in Metro Baguio.

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teddy Casiño, spokesman of the Makabayan Coalition, in a message to the forum, urged support for the anti-discrimination measure he filed in Congress, House Bill 1483, which seeks to protect gender identity rights and help transgenders get free access to many public facilities that are frequently denied them.

Unlike the Catholic’s holy matrimony, a “holy union” doesn’t require legal documents, the MCCMB said. People enter holy union as a holy sacrament that seeks divine blessings for the love they share to one another.

Proponents of same-sex marriage in Congress have been pushing for the legislation of equal right for gays and lesbians but have always encountered strong opposition, particularly from the Catholic Church.

In 1994, the Progressive Organization of Gays in the Philippines (ProGay) led the first gay and lesbian pride march in the country. Since then, Filipino homosexuals have marched in an annual public pride parade every June and a number of grassroots LGBT groups have lobbied the government for official recognition of their basic human rights.

The mass wedding rites is anchored on “Let’s celebrate our right to Love because we believe that Love is not a heterosexual privilege. Love knows no gender and God loves us all regardless of sexual orientation.”

“The rite of holy union is one of the rites of the Metropolitan Community Churches all over the world as stated in Article III Section C paragraph 3 of the bylaws of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches,” the MCCMB said.

According to what the non-traditional church believes, “the rite of the holy union” is the spiritual joining of two persons in a manner fitting and proper by a duly authorized clergy, interim pastoral leader of the church or UFMCC Elders.

After both persons have undergone counseling and apprised of their responsibilities toward one another, this rite of conferring God’s blessing is performed.

Aside from these precepts, all other traditional wedding rites are present in the same-sex marriage vows officiated under the MCCMB like reception, rings, veil, cord, candles, flower arrangements, and choir.
Still, Cenzon said, “It is not acceptable and should not be supported.”

By Artemio Dumlao (The Philippine Star) Updated June 26, 2011 12:00 AM

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines  â€" At least 10 couples are exchanging vows today as the City of Pines holds its first mass same-sex wedding.

After 2 p.m., the couples will be pronounced “partners for life,” veering away from the conventional “husband and wife” pronouncements.

The Catholic Church, though eerily silent, is obviously angry at the turn of events.

“These unions are an anomaly,” said Bishop Carlito Cenzon of the Baguio-Benguet Vicariate.

Baguio witnessed its first same-sex wedding in November 2003. Today, the city will experience the first mass same-sex wedding, preceding the 5th Baguio Lesbian, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Parade.

“Marriage is for man and woman. What is wrong is wrong. This is an insult to the institution (of marriage) and we should not support such,” Cenzon said.

He added that the Church and Filipino society cannot accept such an anomaly because “it is a disorder.”

Unperturbed, the Metropolitan Community Church of Metro Baguio (MCCMB) is hosting the mass same-sex wedding and has prepared out pre-wedding counseling before the event in various areas in the country.

It has also handed out to interested LGBT couples their own “Requirements for Holy Union.”

“We should pity these people. They are probably having a hard time. Although we can understand them as we are trying to accept them, however, unions (as husbands and wives) are not exceptions (to the Church). Accepting LGBTs are not synonymous to accepting them also in their sexual activities,” Cenzon said.

Eight years ago, David and Alex (not their real names), both professionals, exchanged wedding vows and rings in front of their families and friends.

David, a cultural arts worker, and Alex, a business consultant, formalized their relationship in a holy union officiated by Fr. Richard Mickley, founder of the Order of St. Aelred and known to have officiated same-sex marriages elsewhere in the country

Health and Food / 7 Benefits of Laughter
June 26, 2011, 04:26:40 PM
by Michelle Schoffro

Laughter truly is the best medicine.  And, now science proves some of its many benefits.  Here are seven reasons to laugh longer, harder, and more often:

1.  In a recent study published in Geriatrics and Gerontology International, researchers found that laughter therapy reduced depression in the elderly patients they tested.

2.  The same study also found that laughter improved sleep quality and reduced insomnia.

3.  Laughter can reduce aches and pains for up to 45 minutes.  In a study published in the Spanish journal Revista de Enfermeria, researchers found laughter caused reductions in chronic musculoskeletal pain.

4.  Regular laughter improves the function of blood vessels while increasing blood flow, giving a boost to your cardiovascular health.

5.  According to experts, sharing laughter with others helps create deeper bonds with them.

6.  It is a proven stress-reliever, helping to reduce the cortisol-induced stress response.  When the stress response becomes chronic, it can spell belly fat and depleted the adrenal glands.

7.  Laughter gives the immune system a boost, helping to ward off infections.  Whether you’re fighting a cold or flu or even cancer, laughter is great medicine. -- http://www.care2.com/

Inspiration & Hope / Live In The Present
June 25, 2011, 07:59:34 PM
by Deepak Chopra

Everything you think and feel reflects who you are. If you think and feel from a superficial level of awareness, that is who you are. To dive deeper into yourself and, hopefully, to get to that place where you are love, compassion, trust, and truth, you have to follow the path of your present responses.

Someone who feels unloved can still find love in its purest form, but he will have to work through the layers of resistance that block the feeling of pure love. Your present emotions reflect the present state of your nervous system with all its past imprints.

Whenever you have an experience, these imprints enter into your response, which means that most of your reactions are echoes from the past. You do not really live in the present.

However, at least you are reacting in the present, and that is where the search for your true self begins. Your emotions are the most present-centered thing you have. An emotion is a thought linked to a sensation. The thought is usually about the past or the future, but the sensation is in the present.

Your mind quickly links sensations with thoughts, but when we were infants, our first experience and emotions were much closer to physical sensations. We had no inhibitions or second thoughts about crying when we were wet, cold, lonely, frightened, etc. Our minds didn’t know those powerful words bad and no. Bad teaches you that certain thoughts are shameful; no teaches you to resist your own impulses.

More complex words and interpretations came later. As adults, when we deny ourselves the immediate experience of an emotion, a screen of words is out up by the mind, and this throws us out of the present and into either the past or the future. To feel an emotion fully and completely, to experience it and then release it, is to be in the present, the only moment that never ages.

History / Sex in pre-Spanish Visayas
June 25, 2011, 01:55:24 PM
Despite their professions of piety, the early Spaniards were avid voyeurs who took prurient interest in the sex life of the natives. The first Europeans to record Filipino sexual practices were Antonio Pigafetta and Fray Juan de Plasencia.

Pigafetta interviewed and examined couples at length. Here are some of his findings:

"Both young and old males pierce their penises with a gold or tin rod the size of a goose quill. In both ends of the same bolt, some have what resembles a spur, with points upon the ends; others are like the head of a cart nail. I very often asked many, both young and old, to see their penis, because I could not credit it. In the middle of the bolt is a hole, through which they urinate.

The bolt and the spurs always hold firm. They say that the women wish it so, and if they did otherwise they would not have communication with them.

When a man wishes to have intercourse with a woman, she takes his penis not in the normal way, but gently introduces first the top spur and then the bottom one into her vagina. Once inside, the penis becomes erect and cannot be withdrawn until it is limp."

Pigafetta asserted that the women hated this mode of fornication, which lacerated their organs. "they very much preferred our men to their own," he noted with the hint of a boast.

He was wrong. Later, Spaniards found the painful posture to be the rage, especially in the Visayas. Juan de Medina, an Agustinian friar, wrote that women there would copulat only that way and were "grief stricken" when Catholic missionaries compelled them to reform.

Apan napakyas sila sanglit di man kini ang ilang gipangita.

Hungry for something you can't have
ignoring the tell-tale cries of the wind.
Heart beating at maddening pace
searching for already there answers.
No one can feel what you are
inside of that paralyzed smile.
Each step leads you deeper in
to see the cracks cannot be filled.

(EIM)   - (BANAT NEWS)

The result shows that 3.5 percent of the average annual family income in the region is spent on special family occasions against the 2. 8 percent national rate.
