2. Bounce Back From Defeat.

With nearly 15 million workers unemployed right now in the U.S., it's easy to get discouraged. Don't! Most successful and wealthy people have overcome obstacles and failure along the way. Steve Jobs was ousted from Apple when he was 30. Today, he's a billionaire and a legend. Plus, after getting fired, he created another billion-dollar media company, Pixar.

"Bouncing back from defeat is something all great achievers have. They have this undying belief good things will happen and will continue to happen," says Butowsky.

Take Michael Jordan. "His airness" was cut from his high school basketball team. Motivated by the rejection, Jordan became a star the next season. The rest is history.

1. Live Below Your Means.

Being wealthy isn't just a product of your salary or investment prowess; it's learning how to save.

"We can make a lot of money, you can make a little bit of money, but the second you spend all the money is when people get into trouble. Saving is the key to preserving your wealth," says Ed Butowsky, managing partner of Chapwood Capital Investment Management, a firm that manages money for wealthy individuals.

As many Americans realized during the booming real estate market, just because you think you can afford something doesn't mean you should buy it. Keeping an eye on your bottom line will pay dividends over the long term.

SYDNEY (AFP) â€" North Korea is struggling to feed its army, according to new footage obtained from within the secretive state which shows a soldier complaining his unit is weak from a lack of nutrition.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said the video was taken by an undercover North Korean journalist over several months earlier this year and smuggled out of the communist country to China.

It shows orphaned children begging for food in the streets and a party official ordering a vendor at a private market to give her a donation of rice for the army -- once quarantined from food shortages.

"Everybody is weak," one young North Korean soldier is filmed saying to the reporter's hidden camera.

"Within my troop of 100 comrades, half of them are malnourished."

The ABC said the exclusive video also showed labourers building a private railway track near the capital Pyongyang for ruler Kim Jong-Il's son and apparent heir Kim Jong-Un.

"This rail line is a present from Kim Jong-Il to comrade Kim Jong-Un," the undercover journalist is told when he asks the building site supervisor what they are doing.

Japanese publisher Jiro Ishimaru, who instructed the undercover reporter on how to use the camera, told the ABC the footage was important because it showed the weakening of Kim Jong-Il's regime.

"It used to put the military first, but now it can't even supply food to its soldiers," Ishimaru, who edits a magazine featuring insider accounts of life in North Korea, told the ABC.

"Rice is being sold in markets but they are starving. This is the most significant thing in this video," he said.

Impoverished North Korea has requested overseas food and relief groups have said that the state faces imminent shortages, saying people are again eating grass and tree bark.

The United Nations has pleaded with international donors to overlook political difficulties in the face of a humanitarian crisis, saying six million people are in danger of not getting enough to eat.

Asteroid 2011 MD barely misses Earth on Monday but real danger lurks in 2182
June 27, 2011 3:04 PM EDT

An asteroid, named 2011 MD, barely missed crashing on to the Earth's surface today, but the real danger awaits us in 2182 when a gigantic asteroid may be on a collision course with this planet, astronomers warn.

2011 MD passed through Earth's orbit today, posing no real threat. The space rock was at least 7,500 miles away at its closest distance to the Earth - closer than the distance between the Earth and GPS satellites and 30 times closer than the distance between the Earth and the moon.

However, the real dangerous threat, according to scientists, will come in 2182 when a much bigger asteroid, which is 560 meters across, will come near the Earth with one-in-a-thousand chance of an impact.

The asteroid, discovered in 1999 and named 1999 RQ36, has been labeled as a "potentially hazardous asteroid."

"The total impact probability of asteroid 1999 RQ36 can be estimated at 0.00092 â€" approximately one-in-a-thousand chance â€" but what is most surprising is that over half of this chance (0.00054) corresponds to 2182," said Maria Eugenia Sansaturio of Valladolid University in Spain.

NASA will be sending a $800 million probe, called Osiris-Rex, to the asteroid to collect samples and return back to Earth. From the collected data, scientists will study the effects of sunlight on the asteroid's orbit and find the way to deflect the cosmic missile. The Yarkovsky effect, caused by sunlight on asteroids, will introduce disturbance, creating "orbital uncertainty."

The unmanned probe is scheduled to launch in 2016, reach the asteroid in 2020, and return back to Earth by 2023, leaving the scientists enough time to devise a plan.

Other asteroids that will come close to Earth before 2182 include 2005 YU55 (November 2028) and Apophis (April 2029 and again in 2036), but neither of them have a high possibility of actually colliding with the Earth. -- http://sanfrancisco.ibtimes.com/

Asteroid Buzzes Earth in Close Shave
Tariq Malik, SPACE.com Managing Editor
Space.com â€" 28 mins ago This story was updated at 3:56 p.m. ET.

An asteroid the size of a tour bus zipped by Earth today (June 27) in a flyby so close that the space rock was nearer to the planet than some satellites, giving skywatchers and astronomers a tantalizing target for photos.

The space rock, called asteroid 2011 MD, reached its closest point to Earth just after 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT), when it crept within 7,500 miles (12,000 km) of Earth before whipping away again like a slingshot. The asteroid was flying over the southern Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Antarctica, at the time of its closest approach.

The asteroid was discovered just last week on June 22, but there was never any risk of it impacting Earth, NASA scientists said. Astronomers with the LINEAR near-Earth object survey in Socorro, N.M., made the find.

The space rock is on the small side, with latest size estimates ranging from 16 to 66 feet (5 to 20 meters) wide.

That means asteroid 2011 MD would likely be too small to survive the fiery plunge through Earth's atmosphere, let alone reach the surface, NASA scientists said. Asteroids this size can be expected to buzz Earth with close shaves about once every six years, they added.

The asteroid's close brush with Earth sent it off on a new trajectory through the solar system. The space rock flew well below geosynchronous satellites, which orbit 22,236 miles (35,786 km) above Earth, but well above the 220-mile (354-km) altitude of the International Space Station.

There was little chance the asteroid would hit a satellite because of the vastness of space and relatively small number of satellites, experts said.

9th NATIONAL SEAFARERS’ DAY CELEBRATION
“Filipino Seafarer: Aim High, Reach Higher”

On Sunday, September 26, 2004, our Country will hold the 9th national Seafarers’ Day Celebration. The initiative was inspired by the outstanding status of our Filipino seafarers in the international maritime industry on account of their presence (25% of all seafarers world-wide), professional service, trustworthy fulfillment of their role and for their great economic contribution to our country. The response of the various sectors to this yearly event grew every year together with a more conscious awareness of the importance, contribution and international role attached to this profession.

The Apostleship of the Sea (AOS), which has been mandated by the government to spearhead the organization of the event since its inception in 1995, has the cooperation of all government and private agencies in the maritime education and employment sectors.

The chosen theme for this year celebration is: “Filipino Seafarer: Aim High, Reach Higher!”

In recent years, competition from other countries like China, Russia, Easter European and Southeastern Asian countries has put on pressure on the employability of our Filipino seafarers. But the Filipino seafarers have always proven their worth and reliability leading to continued growth in number: numbering 165,401 in 1999, they have grown to 216,031 in 2003, according to POEA data.

Seafarer Day declared in Philippines
(philstar.com) Updated June 16, 2011 10:10 PM

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - President Benigno Aquino III has declared June 25 of every year as the day of the Filipino Seafarer for the invaluable contribution of the seafarers to the country's national development efforts.

Aquino issued a proclamation to give respect, recognition and gratitude to the Filipino seafarers who have become "sailing ambassadors" of the country for having demonstrated before the global maritime community the best traits of the Filipino.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) encouraged, at a meeting held in Manila Thursday, governments, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully.

Also, the United Nations Organization (UNO) has recognized the important role that seafarers play in the continued growth of the global economy and in the promotion of safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment.

The Philippines is the world's leading supplier of ship crew with over 350,000 sailors, or about a fifth of the world's seafarers, manning oil tankers, luxury liners, and passenger vessels worldwide, exposing them to piracy attacks.

While marking the first ever Day for the Seafarers on June 25, a group urged the maritime industry to address problems plaguing sea-based workers, such as piracy, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) reported Sunday.

The International Seafarers’ Action Center (ISAC) particularly noted piracy incidents in the Horn of Africa, victimizing hundreds of seafarers who are mostly Filipinos, an article posted on the CBCP website said.

“Aside from the psychological torture that they experience, their lives are also exposed to more dangers and risks as there were reports that pirates now slay their hostages as the ship-owners continue to decline giving ransom for the ship and the crew," ISAC said.

Despite these dangers, the maritime industry continues to lure Filipinos because of the promise of high salaries, according to a special report on GMA News’ “24 Oras" newscast.

ISAC also said it has been busy “handling cases of seafarers that had been duped by their employers about their salaries, the non-payment of benefits for sickness and disability, and many other issues which concern the health, safety, rights, and welfare of the seamen."

ISAC, however, noted that a flawed justice system in the country and inadequate international laws continue to deter action on these cases.

“The litigation process is difficult, intricate, and not to mention excruciating. Corruption, power play and the deemed inadequacy of the local and international laws play the crucial role in the litigation and execution processes," the group said.

Last Saturday, June 25 was declared by the International Maritime Organization, United Nations body, a Day for the Seafarers for the first time. â€" LBG, GMA News

Meanwhile, Italian banks were down sharply Friday on the Milan stock exchange after ratings agency Moody's said it was considering downgrading their credit worthiness.

Moody's Investors Service placed the long-term debt and deposit ratings of 16 Italian banks and two Italian government-related financial institutions on review for a possible downgrade.

On Wall Street, stocks fell Friday after poor earnings reports from two major technology companies suggested that companies invested less in new technology as the economic recovery slowed.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 1 percent to 11,934.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.2 percent to 1,268.45. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.3 percent to 2,652.89.

The U.S. economy has cooled since late April. Recent reports on housing, employment, manufacturing and retail sales all have been weak. The debt crisis in Greece and fears that China's growth is slowing have also pushed markets lower.

In energy trading, benchmark oil for August delivery was down 81 cents to $90.39 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose 14 cents to settle at $91.16 on Friday.

In currencies, the euro weakened $1.4125 from $1.4171 on Friday in New York. The dollar ticked up to 80.75 yen from 80.52 yen.  -- http://news.yahoo.com/

BANGKOK â€" Asian markets dropped Monday amid fears of a spreading European debt crisis after a ratings agency placed Italian banks on a review for a possible downgrade.

Oil prices fell below $91 a barrel as a stronger U.S. dollar made crude more expensive for investors with other currencies. The greenback was higher against the euro and the yen on safe-haven buying.

Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.7 percent to 9,609.64, South Korea's Kospi lost 1 percent to 2,069.61, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.7 percent to 22,025.35, amid worries over whether debt-drenched Greece would be able to enact a slew of harsh austerity measures in order to receive a chunk of its multibillion euro bailout.

If those measures fail to win parliamentary approval, the country would be at serious risk of defaulting on its debts, a prospect that could unleash financial shocks globally.

Tey Tze Ming, a trader at Saxo Capital Markets in Singapore, said the European debt crisis â€" if it blows up and spreads beyond Greece to a major economy like Spain â€" would be felt very keenly by Asian economies that are heavily dependent on exporting to Western Europe.

"In the short term, I think stocks in Asia are going to be in for a bit more pain. I think there's a lot more downside," Ming said.

Technology shares followed their U.S. counterparts lower. South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor, one of the world's leading computer chip makers, was 4.7 percent down. Japanese chipmaker Elpida Memory slipped 1.7 percent, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing lost 1.4 percent.

But tumbling oil prices, which translate into lower fuel costs, helped sustain airline shares. Air China Ltd. rose 5.3 percent in Hong Kong. Taiwan's EVA Airways Corp. was 1 percent higher. Korean Air Lines Co. rose 0.4 percent.

Australia's ASX/S&P 200 lost 1.1 percent to 4,457 amid a banking sector slip. Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the country's largest lender, dropped 1.3 percent, while Westpac Banking Corp., which ranks No. 2, lost 0.4 percent.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan were also lower, while mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.4 percent to 2,757.31.

8.  Detoxification in the liver requires considerable amounts of nutrients to function properly so be sure to take a high quality multivitamin and mineral supplement.  Even a single nutrient deficiency can seriously disrupt natural detoxification processes.

9.  While lying flat on your back, you can gently massage the liver/gallbladder area, which is located along the lower rib area on the right side of your body.  This helps improve circulation to the area.

Always consult your physician prior to making dietary changes or taking nutritional supplements. -- http://www.care2.com/

4. Drink between eight to ten glasses of pure, filtered water every day.  This is the only way your liver can flush toxins out of your body.

5.  Better yet, start every day with a large glass of water with the fresh juice of one-half to one lemon added.  Lemon helps bolster you liver’s detoxification abilities.

6.  Eat plenty of liver-rebuilding foods, including: carrots, beets, leafy greens, and other green vegetables.

7.  Eat lots of garlic, onions and broccoli since these foods contain sulfur that is required to increase the liver’s detoxification ability.

Health and Food / 9 Simple Ways to Boost Your Liver

posted by Michelle Schoffro Cook Jun 23, 2011 3:01 pm

The liver is the body’s main fat-digesting and detoxification organ.  Every molecule of fat that you eat must pass through your liver, but if your liver is overburdened by its more than 500 other essential activities, it can become sluggish.  Here are ways to boost your liver function:

1.  Since the liver requires high amounts of vitamins and minerals to perform its many functions, your diet should be high in fruits and vegetables and nutrient-rich foods.

2.  Because food additives and preservatives need to be filtered by your liver, your diet should be free of processed foods, artificial food additives, colors, and preservatives to take the load off your liver.  Additionally, choose to eat a diet low in refined sugar and synthetic sweeteners.

3. You should definitely be avoiding margarine, shortening, commercial oils (choose unrefined oils from the refrigerator section of your local health food store).  Avoid eating animal fat and fried foods as well.

Health and Food / Sex boosts your immune system
June 27, 2011, 11:59:56 AM
“Honey, I have a headache,” may now be the best reason to have sex! A startling number of physicians are now recognizing how sexual and emotional health affect our entire well being. In other words, how our brain directly impacts our immune system. “We know that people who enjoy a regular, satisfying sex life (i.e. regular orgasms) are less stressed, less depressed and generally more well physically, mentally and emotionally,” says Wendy Strgar, loveologist and CEO of Good Clean Love. In a recent article, Dr. Paul Pearsall, director of Behavioral Medicine at Detroit’s Beaumont Hospital, concludes that many of his patients had experienced sexual dissatisfaction prior to a heart attack. He also claims that sexual contentment leads to less severe headaches and reduced discomfort from arthritis in both genders. -- http://www.care2.com/

How to prevent your Puppy from being Obese

Take him to a walk at least three times a week. Long walks help combat weight gain and it can also maintain your pet’s active lifestyle. Walk him on smooth paths and soft lawn grass. This can also help improve your pet’s emotional health.

Help him burn calories by exercising 20-50 minutes twice a day. Aside from weight loss, it can also help to boost his immune system. Regular exercises can help your pet’s system function properly.

As on owner, you are responsible for the meals of your pet. Give him low calorie but fiber and protein rich diet. Feed him with meal amounts prescribe for his breed. Don’t overfeed. Smaller portions of meal two to three times a day is enough to keep your pet satisfied and active.

The staggering statistics of obesity in pets have caused different advocacy campaigns about the issue. Don’t let your pet be a part of the statistics. Recognize obesity symptoms and manage it as soon as possible.

Kickbacks

While the new management had uncovered scams perpetrated by board members and top officials who got kickbacks from media contracts and fictitious medical claims and hospital bills, the PCSO has to honor the contracts as long as media outfits and medical facilities could show documents to back them up, PCSO General Manager Jose Ferdinand Rojas II said.

Rojas, a son-in-law of Ignacio Bunye, Arroyo’s press secretary, said that when he took over the general manager’s office a year ago, he found nine boxes with P329 million worth of guarantee letters that could be used by beneficiaries to offset their medical and hospital liabilities (excluding doctor’s fees).

“Everybody in the PCSO were issuing guarantee letters left and right when it should have been centralized to protect the charity funds,” Rojas said.

Lack of documentation

Rojas pointed out that only P4 million of the P329 million worth of guaranteed letters had complete documentation.

Rojas said his office was compiling a list of the media entities that got a windfall from contracts with the PCSO, especially in the last two years of the Arroyo board.

The contracts include the P1.5-billion, five-year deal with film director Carlo J. Caparas, which the PCSO has no choice but to honor after this was upheld by the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel. [The Bureau of Internal Revenue has filed a tax evasion case against Caparas in connection with his contract with the PCSO.]

Juico said that while the 2010 budget for public relations was pegged at P900 million, the board spent P1.7 billion.

She said the current PCSO management had trimmed the budget to P550 million, but it had to ask for a supplemental budget to pay for the PR debts piled up last year.

Media members

“(Arroyo) appointed a lot of media members on the board, and they brought in a lot of contracts, which is probably why the ad budget shot up,” Juico said.

While Rojas, a lawyer, reckoned that it would be difficult to include Arroyo in a plunder case being planned against the former board members, Juico said some documents showed that the former President had a direct hand in the finances of the PCSO.

Arroyo signed OK

Juico said Arroyo signed “OK” on the Jan. 4, 2010, letter of former PCSO Vice Chair Rosario Uriarte, who requested at least P150 million of the PR fund to be moved to the intelligence fund, which is not audited.

“It’s her board. She’s responsible for their actions,” Juico said, referring to Arroyo, now a Pampanga representative.

Officials expose spurious media contracts, bogus medical claims

Then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her allies used the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) as their milking cow, leaving the agency P4 billion in debt, or close to a year’s worth of doles for the poor and the sick.

“They ran it to the ground,” said PCSO Chair Margarita Juico, who recently met with Inquirer editors and reporters.

Juico said the directors appointed by Arroyo to the PCSO board “comingled” the funds for operating expenses with those for charity work, thus allowing the agency to spend more than its budget, especially in the last two years in office of the appointees.

Under its charter, the PCSO is mandated to set aside 55 percent of its revenues (P29.5 billion in 2010) from numbers games, such as lotto, Scratch It, Keno online and sweepstakes for prize money; 30 percent for charity; and 15 percent for operating funds.

Juico said that when the PCSO board in the Arroyo administration used up its operational funds, it broke the agency rule to separate charity funds from its general expense account.

The violation was verified by Commission on Audit (COA) reports for 2008 and 2009 that were released recently. The reports questioned the comingling of the charity and operating funds.

Juico pointed out that before 2007, the COA had been making the same findings “over and over again” and the same qualified reports that tended to cloud the real state of PCSO finances. When the COA finally gave an adverse report, those appointed by Arroyo to the PCSO board had already left their seats, Juico said.

“They entered into million-peso contracts with favored media groups and issued hundreds of guaranteed letters to hospitals,” said Juico, who had served on the PCSO board during the terms of Corazon Aquino, Fidel V. Ramos and Arroyo.

Juico resigned in 2005 following the “Hello Garci” controversy that linked Arroyo to electoral cheating and the “Hyatt 10” protest that ensued.

The result: P1 billion in payables to media groups and P3 billion in obligations to hospitals.

1 Animals in film

The use of animals by filmmakers has often received criticism for allegedly harmful, and sometimes lethal, treatment of animals during production although laws on animal rights are now stricter.

One of the most infamous examples of animal cruelty in film was Michael Cimino’s legendary flop Heaven’s Gate, in which numerous animals were killed and brutalized during production. Cimino allegedly killed chickens and bled horses from the neck to gather samples of their blood to smear on actors for Heaven’s Gate, and also allegedly had a horse blown up with dynamite while shooting a battle sequence, the shot of which made it into the film. After the release of the film Reds, the star and director of the picture, Warren Beatty apologized for his Spanish film crew’s use of tripwires on horses while filming a battle scene, when Beatty wasn’t present. Tripwires were used against horses when Rambo III and The Thirteenth Warrior were being filmed. An ox was sliced nearly in half during production of Apocalypse Now, while a donkey was bled to death for dramatic effect for the film Manderlay, in a scene later cut from the film.

Although there are now laws covering animal use in filmmaking in America and Europe, other eastern countries such as South Korea have been criticized for the use of animals such as in the film, The Isle, in which a real frog is skinned alive while fish are mutilated.

2 Zoos

Although most zoos are of a high standard nowadays and many are even encouraging breeding programs for endangered species, it is still argued that animals should not be kept in captivity but encouraged back into their native environment.

There are an estimated 5 million animals in zoos worldwide and a report by the World Society for the Protection of Animals showed that only 1,200 out of the 10,000 zoos worldwide are registered for captive breeding and wildlife conservation and that only 2 percent of the world’s threatened or endangered species are registered in breeding programs.

In some Chinese zoos, live killing is encouraged where people can feed wild animals. In the Badaltearing Safari Park, visitors can throw live goats into the lions’ enclosure and watch them being eaten, or can purchase live chickens tied to bamboo rods to dangle into lion pens. Visitors can drive through the lion’s compound on buses with specially designed chutes leading into the enclosure into which they can push live chickens. In the Xiongsen Bear and Tiger Mountain Village near Guilin in southeast China, live cows and pigs are thrown to tigers to amuse visitors.
