TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) â€" A defiant Moammar Gadhafi threatened Friday to carry out attacks in Europe against "homes, offices, families," unless NATO halts its campaign of airstrikes against his regime in Libya.

The Libyan leader, sought by the International Criminal Court for a brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters, delivered the warning in a telephone message played to thousands of supporters gathered in the main square of the capital Tripoli.

It was one of the largest pro-government rallies in recent months, signaling that Gadhafi can still muster significant support. A green cloth, several hundred meters long and held aloft by supporters, snaked above the crowd filling Tripoli's Green Square. Green is Libya's national color.

A series of powerful explosions later rattled the heart of the capital, apparently new NATO airstrikes, as Gadhafi supporters cheered, honked horns and fired into the air in the street. Black smoke could be seen rising from the area near Gadhafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound.

Gadhafi spoke from an unknown location in a likely sign of concern over his safety. Addressing the West, Gadhafi warned that Libyans might take revenge for NATO bombings.

"These people (the Libyans) are able to one day take this battle ... to Europe, to target your homes, offices, families, which would become legitimate military targets, like you have targeted our homes," he said.

"We can decide to treat you in a similar way," he said of the Europeans. "If we decide to, we are able to move to Europe like locusts, like bees. We advise you to retreat before you are dealt a disaster."

Mayor Sara nangulata'g sheriff
Ni Rhona Goc-ong
Friday, July 1, 2011

It's true that if you don't have enough C, you'll get sickâ€"but with scurvy, not a runny nose. Carroll and Vreeman hypothesize that this bug-fighting theory began when we discovered the vitamin's link to that infamous sailors' affliction, in 1932; if C could prevent one illness, the logic likely went, perhaps it could prevent others, too. But dozens of studies have found no difference in the number or duration of colds suffered by people who take C and those who don't. What is the best way to stay cold-free? "Nothing beats hand washing," Carroll says.

History / Hierarchy of Prostitutes in China
July 01, 2011, 02:39:53 PM
Chinese police categorise prostitution practices according to a descending hierarchy of seven tiers, though this typology does not exhaust the forms of practices that exist. These tiers highlight the heterogeneous nature of prostitution and prostitutes. While they are all classified as prostitutes, the services they offer can be very different. Within some tiers, for example, there is still some revulsion to the acts of anal sex and oral sex. In parallel with the wide range of backgrounds for prostitutes, male buyers of sex also come from a wide range of occupational backgrounds.

First tier - baoernai (åŒ...二奶)

Women who act as the "second wives" of men with money and influential positions, including government officials and entrepreneurs from the mainland, as well as overseas businessmen. This practice is defined as prostitution on the grounds that women in question actively solicit men who can provide them with fixed-term accommodation and a regular allowance. Women who engage in these acts will sometimes co-habit with their "clients" and may even have ambitions to become a real wife.

Second tier - baopo (åŒ...婆 "packaged wife")

Women who accompany high class clients for a fixed duration of time, for example, during the course of a business trip, and receive a set payment for doing so.

The first and second tiers have become the focus of heated public debate because they are explicitly linked to government corruption. Many domestic commentators contend that these practices constitute a concrete expression of "bourgeois rights". The All-China Women's Federation, as one of the major vehicles of feminism in the PRC, as well as women's groups in Hong Kong and Taiwan, have been actively involved in efforts to eradicate this form of "concubinage" as practices that violate the emotional and economic surety of the marriage contract.

Third tier - santing (三åŽ... "three halls")

Women who perform sexual acts with men in karaoke/dance venues, bars, restaurants, teahouses and other venues and who receive financial recompense in the form of tips from the individual men they accompany, as well as from a share of the profits generated by informal service charges on the use of facilities and the consumption of food and beverages. A common euphemism for such hostesses is sanpei xiaojie (三陪小姐: "ladies of the three accompaniments"). In theory, the "three accompaniments" are chatting, drinking and dancing with their clients. In practice, the "three accompaniments" more often refers to dancing with, drinking with, and being publicly groped by their clients. These women often begin by allowing their clients to fondle or intimately caress their bodies, then if the client is eager, will engage in sexual intercourse.

Fourth tier - "doorbell girls" (叮å'šå°å§ "dingdong ladies")

Women who solicit potential buyers of sex by phoning rooms in a given hotel.

Fifth tier - falangmei (å'廊妹 "hairdressing salon sisters")

Women who work in places that offer commercial sexual services under the guise of massage or health and beauty treatments; for instance, in health and fitness centres, beauty parlours, barber shops, bathhouses and saunas. Common activities in these premises are masturbation or oral sex.

Sixth tier - jienü (街女 "street girls")

Women who solicit male buyers of sex on the streets.

Seventh tier - xiagongpeng (下工棚 "down the work shack")

Women who sell sex to the transient labour force of male workers from the rural countryside.

The lowest two tiers are characterised by a more straightforward exchange of sex for financial or material recompense. They are neither explicitly linked to government corruption, nor directly mediated through China's new commercial recreational business sector. Women who sell sex in the lowest two tiers usually do so in return for small sums of money, food and shelter. --Wikipedia

A Million Frustrated Graduates Swarm Squalid Colonies, Posing a Social Quandary
Sim Chi Yin reports in The Straits Times (Singapore):

They are smart, industrious and marginalised, huddling together for comfort.

Hordes of China’s underemployed or underpaid university graduates have formed squalid enclaves on the fringes of the country’s big cities, earning themselves the label yi zu or ‘ant tribe’.

As their ranks swell, some observers have warned of the dangers that a mass of young and frustrated people â€" doing jobs they are overqualified for â€" might pose to social stability.

Last month, several delegates at Beijing’s annual parliamentary session urged the government to build better housing for these graduates and to do more to help them find jobs.

There are a million ‘ants’ massed around major cities, with about 100,000 in Beijing alone, estimates sociologist Lian Si, who led a two-year study that was published in a book last September.

A typical ‘ant’ hails from rural China, is a graduate of a non-brand-name university aged between 22 and 29, and earns no more than 2,000 yuan (S $414) a month working long hours as an insurance salesman, computer technician or waiter. -- http://chinadigitaltimes.net/2010/02/a-million-frustrated-graduates-swarm-squalid-colonies-posing-a-social-quandary/

"Unlike slums in South America or Southeast Asia, these villages are populated with educated young people as opposed to laborers or street peddlers," says Lian, who teaches at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

The Chinese born after 1980 are among the most privileged generation in China's long history. Living after the communist government gave up the radical politics that tossed their parents and grandparents between chaos and penury, they have known only ever-rising levels of prosperity.

In their lifetimes, gleaming new office towers have remade China's cities. Hundreds of millions have been lifted from poverty. Travel abroad, private cars and apartments and a university education â€" all once the preserve of the elite â€" are increasingly common.

Vibrant megacities such as Beijing and Shanghai are the epitome of this good life. So the ant generation comes, bringing its aspirations.

But their very abundance keeps entry-level salaries low, while housing and other costs rise. Real estate prices have doubled in just three years in major cities, outpacing a 40 percent increase in urban wages from 2005 to 2009.

"This is the biggest struggle for China's young generation today," says Liu Neng, a sociology professor at Beijing University. "People in their 40s and 50s, now leaders in society, have already experienced hardships, but it's the younger generation's turn to face challenges before they become part of the country's elite." -- http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/06/27/chinas-young-ant-tribe-generation-home-shared-bed-far-home/

'Ant tribes' with college degrees worthless in China

China’s double digit growth rate during the financial crisis, has been the envy of the World. And yet, many Chinese are still not reaping the rewards of the economic boom. That includes the millions of graduates entering the workforce each year. They’re becoming part of a phenomenon called ‘Ant Tribes’, as Henry Morton explains.

Nahadlok tingali ang TSA basin nay deadly chemical or biological weapon ang soiled diaper… :P

http://www.care2.com/causes/tsa-forces-95-year-old-cancer-patient-to-remove-adult-diaper.html

We heard a lot about the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) last fall, when the decision to install “enhanced” security technologies and more extensive searches left people asking whether full-body scans or pat-downs constituted an invasion of privacy, and whether the potential discomfort or embarrassment they might cause was worth the public security benefits.  Many people alleged that the innovations were too uncomfortable and invasive, and questioned whether people truly consented when they bought their airline ticket.

The hubbub about scans and searches has mostly died down.  But TSA continues to humiliate people as they go through airport security.  A woman, Jean Weber, filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security, alleging that her 95-year-old mother was asked to remove her soiled adult diaper as security officials completed their pat-down.  Weber’s mother was flying to Michigan to be with her family during the last stages of leukemia, and was traveling through the airport in a wheelchair because she could not walk.  She was detained and searched extensively, but during the search, officials say that “they felt something suspicious on (her mother’s) leg and they couldn’t determine what it was.”  They then asked the mother and daughter to leave, remove the mother’s adult diaper, and return to complete the search.

Understandably, Weber and her mother described the 45-minute ordeal as traumatic.  ”Here is my mother, 95 years old, 105 pounds, barely able to stand, and then this,” said Weber.  But TSA defended its employees’ actions.

“Wheelchairs trigger certain protocols, including pat-downs and possible swabbing for explosives,” said Sari Koshetz, a spokeswoman for TSA.  ”The TSA works with passengers to resolve any security alarms in a respectful and sensitive manner.”

Weber, however, wants less invasive security methods for elderly people who are unable to walk through the security gates.  ”Nobody should feel the way I felt that day,” she explained. “I’m not angry. The rules need to be changed.”

Protecting air travelers is one thing, but did security officials really need to humiliate a 95-year-old cancer patient and her daughter?  This situation is far more clear-cut than debates over pat-downs and full-body scans: for people who are elderly or infirm, there need to be different rules, or at least machines that are capable of determining that even though a wheelchair is made of metal, it is not an explosive.

"We asked the Interpol office in the Philippines to extradite Virginia Chun to face trial in Taiwan. We are still waiting for their reply," a Bureau of Criminal Investigation official said by phone yesterday.

But since this country does not have an extradition treaty with the Philippines, it is not clear if police there will grant the request.

Chun, 46, cut off the penis of her Filipino-Chinese husband, identified only by his surname Tsai, at about 6am Tuesday when Tsai was sleeping at their home in the Taipei suburb of Shihlin.

She flushed his penis down the toilet, left the house and headed for the airport to catch a flight to her home in the Philippines.

Their son, 17, who was sleeping in another room, was awakened by his father's howling. After trying to stem the bleeding, he rushed his father to hospital where doctors stitched up the wound.

Hung Cheng-sheng, the chief surgeon at the Municipal Yangming Hospital, said Tsai is in stable condition.

"But he is traumatized because only 2.5 centimetres of his penis is left and he won't be able to have sex again," Hung said.

Doctor Kicks Man with Asperger’s, Struck Off Medical Council
by Kristina C.   June 28, 2011   7:53 pm

In a resounding affront to the nation of “first do no harm,” a doctor kicked a man with Asperger’s Syndrome who lives in a Norfolk, UK, residential home, over a pair of rubber gloves. Dr. Robert Bartosik has been struck off the UK’s General Medical Council â€" meaning he will not be able to practice medicine in the UK â€" after a “fitness to practice” panel found that he had kicked the man “up the backside” and that his actions were “unacceptable,” says the Bearsden Herald. In addition, Dr. Bartosik was found “guilty of deficient professional performance” at a number of National Health Trusts in the UK and found to have “poor clinical skills and poor communication and language abilities.”

More from the Bearsden Herald:

The doctor was said to have ignored advice from colleagues when he tried to take the gloves from the kitchen of a bungalow at the Treehaven home for people with autism spectrum disorders. The resident, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, began launching missiles at Dr Bartosik, who retaliated with the kick.

The panel noted: “As a professional person Dr Bartosik should have dealt with the situation in a different way and not have retaliated by kicking the patient. The panel is of the view that his actions were out with the boundaries of acceptability and that the public and profession would deem it to be unacceptable.”…

The panel concluded: ” The panel considers that Dr Bartosik constitutes a potential risk to patients. The panel has no evidence that he has made any effort to remediate his deficiencies or indeed to keep his medical knowledge or skills up to date.”

Dr. Bartosik, who is from Poland, was a support worker at the time of the incident in March of 2007 and said that a witness was lying. After that incident, he also worked at three other hospitals in England and Scotland; his other employees also raised “serious concerns about his ability and professionalism.” One hospital raised concerns that he “could not even perform such basic tasks as taking a patient’s history,” says the BBC.

One hopes the man whom Dr. Bartosik kicked has been able to recover from such an incident. Sadly, such abuses by staff workers against residents of residential facilities for individuals with developmental and other disabilities are not uncommon. While some terrible instances get reported about, it’s more than likely that even more abuses are committed and neither noted nor addressed. Indeed, one has to wonder: How was Dr. Bartosik still able to get jobs at three other hospitals in the UK after doing something like kicking a resident?

I Could Not Throw Her Back Up To The Garden

When we arrived it turned out to be the case that she had never had a tail, she had no broken bones but was only very skinny, with a runny nose and ribs sticking out. Her walk was weird but that had to do with the way she was born, not any recent injury. Of course by that time I had been carrying her around for two hours in a shawl next to me. She was estimated to be eight weeks old and I could not throw her back up in the garden…. We gave her a passport, a microchip and a little carrier to keep her in. The plane ride was no problem and she is in my lap as I type this.

Small Health Issues Can’t Stand in the Way of Love

She does still have a lot of issues because of the way she was built, so to speak. She doesn’t feel the need to ‘go’ and we are figuring out how to deal with that â€" and the washing machine runs overtime!  She has so much spunk, so much will to live that we will not let her down and nobody knows what the future will bring. Maybe she will improve a bit, maybe not, but we love her very much. She’s a keeper!

Kitten Falls From Garden Wall and Rescuers Rush In
by Laura S. June 28, 2011 11:30 pm

So often international travelers encounter situations of animal suffering. Without familiar resources, it can be challenging to find help, but one woman from the Netherlands decided she simply had to do something when she found a kitten in distress. Though she could have spent her final hours in Greece shopping or enjoying the sites, she instead went about the business of securing safety for a bony little animal who was in urgent need of help.

By Jessica Jansen

On our final day in Athens, Greece, we decided to stop by a nest of stray kittens we had visited before. They were high up in a walled garden but we could push cans of food under the fence and they were hungry! We had seen five kittens before, some with dirty eyes but sadly we could not reach them and we were leaving the next day. As we arrived on the square, one of the kittens had tumbled out of the garden. It was sitting on the street with its Momma next to it but she wasn’t able to lift it up again. Cars were passing and the kitten ran away, but as it did that, it looked very odd and wobbly, without a tail, so we scooped it up to find a vet to see what had gone wrong â€" and we thought it would be a one way visit, but at least that would be preferable to dying in the street.

Rennie Gibbs is accused of murder, but the crime she is alleged to have committed is no ordinary killing.

Rennie Gibbs became pregnant aged 15, but lost the baby in December 2006 in a stillbirth, when she was 36 weeks into the pregnancy. When prosecutors discovered that she had a cocaine habit, they charged her with the “depraved-heart murder” of her child, which carries a mandatory life sentence.  There is not an iota of evidence that drug abuse had anything to do with the baby’s death, but the prosecutors decided they knew better than Ms. Gibbs what her intent was.

This young woman now faces life in prison in Mississippi over the death of her unborn child. Yes, you read that right. I am no lawyer, but this is obviously wrong, on all possible grounds. How can going through the emotional and physical agony of a stillbirth at 36 weeks make a woman a murderer?

Punishment Instead Of Protection

But it gets worse. Gibbs may be the first woman in Mississippi to be charged with murder relating to the loss of her unborn baby, but in other states more and more prosecutions are being brought that seek to turn pregnant women into criminals.

Earlier this year, Care2′s Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux wrote about the murder charges that were filed against an Indiana woman who attempted suicide in a late stage of her pregnancy.  Bei Bei Shuai ingested rat poison in December, trying to end her life because her boyfriend had abandoned her; she was taken to the hospital by friends and got help in time.  When her child was born, though, she was first put on life support but then removed when doctors determined that they could not save her.  Shuai, 34, has spent the past three months in a prison cell in Indianapolis charged with murdering her baby.

The French weapons delivery amounted to Paris parsing the fine print in U.N. Security Council resolutions this year on Libya.

In New York, France's U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud told reporters that France had acted under a provision of the Security Council resolution adopted March 17 that imposed a no-fly zone over Libya and authorized military action short of a "foreign occupation force" to protect civilians.

Araud said France believes a provision saying that member states can take "all necessary measures, notwithstanding" an arms embargo, to protect civilians threatened by attack "means for us that in exceptional circumstances" the arms embargo can be ignored to protect civilians.

A bold act of parsing some likely intentional vagueness indeed...

But in a slightly different reasoning out of Paris, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said France's "reading" from early on was that the U.N. resolutions barred sending weapons to Gadhafi's regime â€" but the rebels were exempt, even if Paris had refrained from arming them for two months.

This time, with the civilians surrounded in Nafusa, France felt compelled to arm them to help stave off bloodshed, he said.

"What we feared was a massacre in the Nafusa mountains," said Valero. He said France's view was that the delivery of such "small weapons for self-defense" did not run counter to the U.N. mandate.

Still, several French diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because of ministry protocol, acknowledged France was preparing for the prospect of criticism from other countries or at the United Nations.

Further complicating the matter, Col. Gomaa Ibrahim, a member of the rebel military council in the mountain area, denied receiving French weapons, calling the reports "bewildering." He said the rebel leadership in the eastern city of Benghazi was seeking to clarify the matter with NATO.

Word of the shipments first emerged Wednesday in French daily Le Figaro, which cited an unidentified high-ranking official as saying the aim was to end a stalemate in Libya.

With European and American budgets tight, France and many other NATO countries have been hoping for a quick finish to the Libya operation. France is now spending about â,¬1 million ($1.4 million) per day in Libya beyond what's already been budgeted for its military this year, officials have said.

France and Britain, backed by Washington, have been the main powers behind the monthslong NATO-led air campaign to protect civilians from assaults by Gadhafi's forces.

In Brussels, a NATO official said that until now, no alliance member had shipped weapons to the rebels since the fighting started in the north African country in March.

Francois Heisbourg, director of the Foundation for Strategic Research think tank in Paris, said the French weapons drop was likely to raise questions among opponents of the NATO-led intervention.

"There's a question as to whether aiding the rebellion is part of the embargo or not but it isn't clear cut," he said. "That question will presumably be raised by those who expressed reticence in the Security Council."

"Some NATO allies like Turkey were against the campaign against Gadhafi to begin with, so this isn't going to make them any happier," added Heisbourg, whose foundation receives state funding.

He noted the Nafusa region is inhabited by many ethnic Berbers who oppose Gadhafi: "The point could be made that in this case they really do serve for the protection of civilians, which is what the U.N. resolution says."

Security Council permanent members Russia and China have been among the most wary of the NATO-led effort, and some French diplomats in Paris dodged the question about how a decision was made to airlift in the weapons.

The press office at the Chinese mission to the United Nations referred requests for comment to the Foreign Ministry in Beijing. The press office at the Russia's U.N. mission did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

Meanwhile, in London on Wednesday, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Libya's cash-strapped opposition has received donor funds to pay salaries to public-sector workers in rebel-held areas.

Last week, a first payment of $100 million in international aid money was made to Libya's main opposition group, based in the eastern city of Benghazi, Hague told lawmakers.

He said a meeting of the contact group in Istanbul next month would seek to ensure "the international community is ready to support the Libyan people in building a stable future." -- http://news.yahoo.com/

PARIS (AP) â€" France acknowledged Wednesday that it airlifted weapons to Libyan civilians fighting Moammar Gadhafi's forces in a besieged mountain region south of Tripoli, becoming the first NATO country to do so in a major escalation in the international campaign.

The bold move was likely to draw criticism from countries leery of the allied use of force in Libya's civil war â€" like China and Russia â€" and crossed a threshold in hopes of a breakthrough in the protracted NATO-led mission.

The deliveries of guns, rocket-propelled grenades and munitions took place in early June in the western Nafusa mountains, when Gadhafi's troops had encircled civilians and his government refused a U.N request for a pause in the fighting there to allow access for a humanitarian aid shipment, French military spokesman Col. Thierry Burkhard said.

After informing the United Nations, France dropped humanitarian aid including water, food and medical supplies to besieged civilians in the region, but the situation then deteriorated further, he said.

"So, France also dropped equipment that allowed them to defend themselves â€" self-defense assets â€" which is to say weapons and munitions," Burkhard told The Associated Press.

The weapons were parachuted in by a military transport plane, he said. The impact of the airlifted weapons wasn't immediately clear. But in recent days â€" since the delivery â€" rebels in the mountains claimed to have advanced to the town of Bir al-Ghanam, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Tripoli.

In Libya's capital Wednesday, Gadhafi's prime minister, Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi, played down the reports of rebel mountain advances, saying "the situation in the western mountains is good, and it's under control."

He said France will officially notify Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the weapons delivery as required under the resolution.

SINGAPORE - A naked woman sat on a sixth storey ledge of a HDB flat for more than one and a half hours yesterday, as alarmed neighbours looked on.

The incident happened at a block of flats around Toa Payoh yesterday at 9am.

A Lianhe Wanbao reader sent in a photo of the scene showing a naked woman perched precariously on the ledge below the kitchen window.

Below her were SCDF personnel and police who had rushed on the scene.  They were setting up an inflatable mattress below her.

The reader told Wanbao she had initially thought there was a fire at a neighbouring block, but upon closer look, found the woman sitting on the ledge between the fifth and sixth storeys of the block.

"She was so high up, everyone was worried she was going to jump," said the reader.

Another eye-witness, an 82-year-old retiree who stays in the same block, said the woman was crying and mumbled to herself at times.

The retiree said the woman did not seem to care about the danger and continued to move her legs about. She said the situation was tense and everyone watching was nervous.

The woman was eventually pulled to safety by an SCDF personnel.

According to Wanbao, the woman, 45, is a housewife of Indian ethnicity and stays on the sixth floor unit.

Police say the woman has been admitted to Tan Tock Seng and has been arrested for attempted suicide.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" Flash floods triggered by torrential rains swept away dozens of houses in the southern Philippines and killed at least 25 people, mostly children, officials said Wednesday. At least 15 other people were missing.

About 20,000 families were affected by floodwaters when heavy rains swamped six villages in Davao city late Tuesday, overflowing rivers and triggering a deluge that reached 10 feet (3 meters) high in some places, said Liza Bago of the Davao City Social Services and Development Office.

About 1,475 families sought refuge in four emergency shelters, civil military affairs officer Maj. Jake Obligado said. He said at least 15 people were still missing.

Army Lt. Marianette Vinluan said troops who responded to calls for help from the villagers were blocked by the deep and raging floodwaters.

When they finally reached the affected areas early Wednesday, they found toppled vehicles, houses and trees, she said.

She said 15 of the dead were children under age 10, including a 9-month-old infant.

"It is muddy here and it is starting to rain again," she said by telephone from one village. "The sky is dark and the people are scared again."

Regional civil defense officer Antonio Cloma said at least 50 houses were destroyed and 214 others were damaged. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Different Droppings

You can learn a lot from your chicken's droppings! Here are some examples of what they might look like and what the different appearances mean:

The first image shows a good solid healthy dropping - nothing to worry about here.

When the chicken is young and starting to lay, occasionally an egg will not form correctly and this is passed by the chicken and looks like a wet, yellow dropping. See the second image.

The third image is nothing to worry about either probably just a spot of diarrhoea often caused by the chicken over indulging on slugs and worms. -- http://www.omlet.co.uk/guide/guide.php?view=Chickens&cat=Chicken%20Health&sub=droppings
