PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) â€" Thousands of thrill-seekers have run with the bulls on a crowded fourth day at the San Fermin festival in Pamplona. Eight people were injured but no one was gored.

Several runners tripped, fell and were trampled as crowds raced alongside the massive bulls of the famous Miura breeding estate.

The Sunday run is usually the biggest of the eight that take place annually and is particularly favored by aficionados because it traditionally features Miuras, renowned as Spain's largest fighting bulls.

Navarra Hospital reported eight people were receiving treatment for minor injuries including arm and head trauma. Pamplona experts at state television TVE said around 3,500 people had run with the bulls on Sunday. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

SuperBalita Editoryal: Ikaduhang ginikanan
Saturday, July 9, 2011

Political will and abuse of power
Candid Thoughts by Bong O. Wenceslao
Friday, July 8, 2011

ONE of my recollections of my growing up years involves excesses committed by persons in authority. A drunk barangay tanod mauls a civilian and gets away with it. A president orders the arrests of thousands of people even as he padlocks Congress and emasculates the courts.

In most instances, the perpetrators deem themselves righteous. The barangay tanod does it in the guise of keeping the peace. The president does it supposedly to quell anarchy and build a new order. In the end, the barangay tanod becomes a murderer and the president becomes a dictator, destroying the fabric of Philippine society and emptying public coffers.

That’s why I can never find myself praising Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte for mauling a court sheriff no matter what her motivation was or what infraction the victim committed. If one condemns a government official for stomping on barbecued meat sold by a vendor who obstructed the sidewalk, why not chide Duterte, too, for mauling a sheriff?

But public opinion is fickle and it seems like it is swinging back to the right. Almost four decades after then president Ferdinand Marcos declared military rule and brought the country to the dark ages, the memories of the abuses of those in power have receded.

Four decades means that the “martial law babies” and the youths who fought the dictatorship have gotten older. Four decades means that generations that never experienced what it is like to see somebody seized and tortured are now the dominant force. (Incidentally, Amnesty International listed torture, including making a pregnant woman sit on a block of ice, as among other methods of extracting information.)

As memories of the atrocities receded from public consciousness, the “excesses” of democracy have become the focus. Corruption in the bureaucracy was no longer an act of a single faction of the ruling class. Many officials from top to bottom are into it.

Criminality is widespread, the failure to curb it partly an offshoot of the pervading culture of corruption.

The situation led former Singapore strongman Lee Kuan Yew to quip that too much democracy is bad for the Philippines. That prompted a comparison between the Philippines and the city-state Lee shaped to become an Asian economic power. Then president Fidel V. Ramos defended well our democratic tradition but the Lee Kuan Yew line is being embraced by a growing number of people.

As a result, officials who fight corruption and criminality using strong-arm tactics easily get noticed and even praised. Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago made a political career out of insulting officials she perceives as corrupt. The popularity of Davao City’s Rodrigo Duterte, Sara’s father, grew in proportion to the number of people executed by that city’s “death squads.”

A very fine line separates “political will” from abuse of power, but that distinction is often lost on people critical of the “anarchy” that seems to characterize our practice of democracy. Sara Duterte putting herself in the middle of the police and informal settlers to stop a riot, that was political will. Her asking a court sheriff to approach her and then pummeling him, that was abuse of power. It’s good if people will be able to spot the difference. (khanwens@yahoo.com)

Over a tenth of Filipinos out of some 525 foreigners became naturalized Americans during the US Independence Day celebration at Seattle Center.

Filipinos make up the biggest number of naturalized Americans in the Seattle ceremony with 55, the Seattle Times reported earlier this week.

The other big groups of naturalized Americans who took their Oath of Allegiance were Mexicans (39) and Indians (36).

The 525 naturalized Americans and formerly local immigrants and refugees came from 83 countries. Across the US, over 24,000 took their oath on July 4. â€" OFW Journalism Consortium

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) â€" South Sudan celebrated its first day as an independent nation Saturday, raising its flag before tens of thousands of cheering citizens elated to reach the end of a 50-year struggle.

U.S. President Barack Obama called the day a new dawn after the darkness of war, while visiting dignitaries offered both congratulations and prodding for South Sudan and its former ruler, Sudan, to avoid a return to conflict over serious and unresolved disagreements.

"The eyes of the world are now on us," said South Sudan President Salva Kiir, who was inaugurated during a scorching midday ceremony. Kiir stressed that the people of South Sudan must advance their country together, and unite as countrymen first, casting aside allegiances to the dozens of tribes that reside here.

Saturday meant that South Sudan and its black tribesmen would for the first time be linked politically with sub-Saharan Africa. Kenya and Uganda are already laying strong economic ties with their northern neighbor, an oil-rich country that may one day ship its oil to a Kenyan port, instead of through the pipelines controlled by Khartoum.

"From today our identity is southern and African, not Arabic and Muslim," read a hand-painted sign that one man carried as he walked through the crowds.

There is a story, which is fairly well known, about when the missionaries came to Africa.  They had the Bible and we, the natives, had the land.  They said, "Let us pray," and we dutifully shut our eyes.  When we opened them, why, they now had the land and we had the Bible.  --Desmond M. Ecological interactions

Burmese pythons captured in the everglades have been found with a wide variety of mammals and birds in their stomachs, including endangered species and even small alligators. Alligators have been observed preying upon pythons. In October 2005, Everglades National Park Rangers, (USA), had discovered the carcass of a 6-foot (1.8 meter) American Alligator protruding from the burst and headless body of 13-foot (4 meter) Burmese python. It was suggested that a third animal or human was responsible for cutting open and decapitating the snake. --Wiki

Burmese Pythons in Florida

The Burmese python, a large, non-venomous constrictor native to Southeast Asia, has been sighted and captured with increasing frequency in the Everglades  and is generally labeled an invasive species. Their range is expanding, though the eventual limits are still disputed, and efforts are underway to control or eradicate them.

Timeline

While isolated individuals, probably recent releases or escapees, have been reported since the 1980s, the numbers captured since 2000 have shown a dramatic increase. However, the increase in python captures in the Everglades may be due to an increase in search effort in recent years. A severe winter in early 2010 is believed to have killed a large number of the snakes, but there are currently no publications suggesting this significantly reduced the overall population. The incident has brought in to question the possibility of cold snaps helping to propagate a more cold-resistant population by weeding out less cold-hardy individuals. 2011 also produced evidence of cold-killed Burmese pythons, and the largest snakes appear to be most vulnerable.

Origin

While the origin of this snake in the Everglades is unknown, blame has fallen on pet owners thought to have abandoned the snakes once they reached unmanageable sizes. An alternative theory states that a specific holding warehouse filled with newly imported Burmese pythons was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew, releasing the snakes en masse in a single area. Genetic studies using mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite genotyping have only been able to determine that the population in Everglades National Park is not genetically structured which could be explained by several hypotheses. --Wiki

These two Asian elephants named Naram and Lucky are playing at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center in Cambodia. At this Rescue Center, a charity organization called the Asian Elephant Art And Conservation Project (AEACP) was formed to primarily save Asian elephants from becoming extinct. The AEACP raises funds by selling the work of elephant artists. The money that is raised is used to provide the elephants with better food and improved shelter that is offered here at the Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center. -- http://www.care2.com/

BEIJING, China - China and the Philippines agreed Friday not to allow rising tensions over conflicting claims in the South China Seas to hamper bilateral relations, the two governments said in a joint statement.

The statement was released by the Philippines following talks in Beijing between Chinese Foreign Ministry Yang Jiechi and his Philippine counterpart Albert del Rosario.

"Both Ministers exchanged views on the maritime disputes and agreed not to let the maritime disputes affect the broader picture of friendship and cooperation between the two countries," the statement said.

The two sides also agreed to abide by a 2002 code of conduct over their claims in the South China Seas, signed by the disputing nations that also include Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

Del Rosario's trip comes amid rising bilateral strains, with the Philippines accusing China of recently making aggressive moves in the region called the "West Philippine Sea" by Manila, particularly in the strategic and potentially resource-rich area of the Spratly islands.

The Philippines has previously accused Chinese forces of opening fire on Filipino fishermen, shadowing an oil exploration vessel employed by a Philippine firm and putting up structures in Philippine-claimed areas.

In the latest incident, it said an unidentified foreign plane harassed a group of Filipino fishermen in the South China Sea last month with a flyover that the Philippine navy said appeared to be a warning.

Del Rosario's visit comes as the navies of the Philippines and the United States engage in 11 days of military exercises close to the South China Seas, war games that have been seen as aimed at the recent Chinese provocations.

Later Friday, Del Rosario met with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is widely expected to become China's top leader in 2013 when current President Hu Jintao steps down.

During talks, both sides also agreed to to make the upcoming visit to China by Philippine President Benigno Aquino III "a full success," the statement said. No dates for the visit have been announced.

"Both Ministers are committed to focus on advancing practical cooperation for the benefit of both countries and people," the statement said. -- http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/
