Biotic Baking Brigade

The Biotic Baking Brigade is a loosely connected group of activists famous for throwing pies in the faces of such figures as Bill Gates, San Francisco mayors Willie Brown, and Gavin Newsom, anti-gay preacher Fred Phelps, economist Milton Friedman, Swedish King Carl Gustaf, former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, conservative journalist William F. Buckley, former WTO head Renato Ruggiero, and Ann Coulter, among others.

The group espouses a left-wing philosophy, with members also active in ecology, social justice, gay rights, animal rights, and feminist movements, with connections to groups like Earth First!, Food Not Bombs, and ACT UP. It opposes corporate neoliberalism as well as any institution or individual who commits "crimes against people and the land."

Concerning the group, popular activist Jim Hightower has stated "The BBB's pies are the Boston Tea Party of our modern day, sending a serious message softly to the corporate oligarchy." Jello Biafra has similarly asked, "Is well placed humor one of the best protest tactics there is? The proof is in the pudding! Or should I say â€" pie cream.

Members have been tried for battery and assault as a result of their pieing. --Wiki

Sadly, dominant cultures swallow up marginal ones. At present, many of those belonging to the latter have no choice but to define themselves in the context of the impending dissolution of their distinct and separate identity.

In early 1994, an Islamic terrorist organization in Jordan ordered violent reprisals against all Jordanian stores that sold either videos or liquor. This meant bombing such stores. On 1 February, Eid Saleh al-Jahaleen, 31 years old, accepted $50 in U. S. currency to plant a bomb in a Turkish movie theater, in Zarqa. He entered and discovered that the theater was showing Turkish pornography. He had never seen anything of the sort, and was immediately fascinated.

He stowed his bomb under a seat in the center of the theater, as instructed, then sat down in the same seat and watched the show. 10 minutes later, the bomb blew off both his legs and his testicles. His penis was relatively unscathed, since it was safely inside his right hand. He mercifully bled to death in the aisle. -- http://listverse.com/

Roszak, scholar of '60s counterculture, dies at 77
AP â€" 24 mins ago

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) â€" Theodore Roszak, the author, scholar and critic who brought the term "counterculture" into the mainstream as he documented the social upheavals of the 1960s, has died. He was 77.

Roszak died in Berkeley on July 5. His wife, Betty Roszak, told the Los Angeles Times the cause of his death was cancer.

The longtime professor's best-seller "The Making of a Counter Culture" was published in 1969 and gave a name to the assortment of youth movements upending life on college campuses and beyond.

Roszak's nonfiction work explored not just life in the '60s but broader issues of humanity's relationship with technology and nature. He also wrote several science fiction novels delving into similar themes.

Born in Chicago, Roszak taught history at California State University-East Bay for more than 30 years.

Bedol: 2004 presidential polls also rigged
Posted at 07/14/2011 10:03 PM | Updated as of 07/15/2011 12:58 AM

from an exclusive report by Anthony Taberna, ABS-CBN News; ANC

MANILA, Philippines - Former Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol has claimed that massive cheating also occurred in the 2004 presidential election won by now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Bedol, who earlier revealed alleged polling irregularities in Mindanao during the 2007 mid-term elections, was mentioned several times in the "Hello Garci" scandal.

The issue involved wiretapped conversations between then-President Arroyo and former Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano regarding an alleged plot to rig the election results.

"Ako yung election supervisor ng Sultan Kudarat that time. I'm also the chairman of the election canvasser of Sultan Kudarat province," Bedol said.

In the Congress tally, Arroyo won by a huge margin over the late Fernando Poe Jr. in Sultan Kudarat.

Bedol alleged that Arroyo benefitted from vote-shaving and padding or "dagdag-bawas."

He believes that the probe into allegations of fraud in the 2004 polls should be revived.

He added that the investigation should look into the supposed ballot-switching at the House of Representatives.

"Importante masyado iyun to find out whether or not nagkaroon nga tayo ng totoong presidente o hindi," Bedol said. "Kasi doon, meron movement of ballot boxes. Sa tingin, ko baka switching yan. Pag switching yan, fake naman ... ngayon kung mga peke ang dokumento e siguro may pekeng presidente ... yan ang gusto kong patunayan."

Bedol said had long wanted to make the exposé.

However, he said he did not want to suffer the fate of COMELEC law director Alioden Dalaig, who was gunned down in November 2007.

"Pinatahimik, kasi meron siyang alam eh," Bedol said.

He added that many pieces of evidence of cheating in the 2004 polls were lost in the fire that razed the COMELEC office in Manila in March 2007.

"Ang nawala, iyung election returns, nasunog. Dun ko nalaman yun kay Dalaig," he added.

Bedol gave ABS-CBN News a copy of his sworn statement.

He is now asking that he be placed under government's Witness Protection Program.

Arroyo's lawyer, Raul Lambino, said the former President is willing to answer allegations of electoral fraud and graft in the courts but not in media or Congress. -- http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/07/14/11/bedol-2004-presidential-polls-also-rigged

Two-headed snake on display in Ukraine zoo
Associated Press, 07.13.11, 04:00 AM EDT

KIEV, Ukraine -- A two-headed snake has gone on display at a zoo in southern Ukraine.

The "Skazka" (Fairy tale) zoo in the Crimean city of Yalta on the Black Sea said Wednesday that the albino California Kingsnake has two heads that think, react and eat separately, though one is more passive than the other.

Dmytro Tkachov, a zoo worker taking care of the snake, said he puts a barrier between the heads when feeding the snake lest one eats the other.

The snake will be on display at the zoo until mid-September. The zoo would not provide further details.

Holidaymaker’s leaping crocodile photo wows Web
By Gaby Leslie | Yahoo! News â€" Tue, Jul 12, 2011

A giant three-legged crocodile has been wowing the Web after a tourist photograph capturing its freakishly large stature emerged online.

The striking creature named Brutus - which looks as though he is a special effect in a film - is said to be a starring attraction of a riverboat cruise in the Adelaide River, Australia.

Although some photos critics have questioned the legitimacy of the shot,  the sightseer and the boat company have claimed that both the monster crocodile and this photo are indeed real.

At 80 years old, the 18ft-long saltwater croc can be seen leaping out of the waters of the Adelaide River to retrieve a slab of raw meat.

Bystanders in the photo look in awe as Brutus, who is believed to have lost his front right leg during an altercation with a shark, makes the awesome jump.

Katrina Bridgeford, who took the amazing snap, told the Northern Territory News: “When it came up out of the water there were a lot of Oos and Ahs. I wasn't expecting anything like this. I couldn't believe how close it got to us. If you had put your hand out you would have been able to touch it - if you'd dared.” -- http://uk.news.yahoo.com/

An enterprising Chinese man has come up with a solution for gadget-crazy people who desperately want Apple's popular iPad tablet computer but cannot afford it -- DIY.

In a 20-minute video posted on Youku -- the Chinese YouTube equivalent -- Liu Xinying demonstrates how to assemble an iPad look-a-like using computer parts, a touch screen and a case with a keypad, to the sound of metal music.

At the end of the video dubbed "DIY IPAD 3", the IT whizz shows off the finished version -- an apparently functional tablet computer that looks like a thick iPad but runs on Windows, an operating system made by rival Microsoft.

News of Liu's apparent feat spread on several foreign and Chinese technology websites, as well as on the nation's Twitter-like Weibo service.

When contacted by AFP, the 21-year-old from the eastern province of Shandong said that since he posted the video online a month ago, he has knocked back requests from a dozen pepole wanting him to make them a DIY iPad.

"I did this for fun," said Liu, who works at a computer store in Jinan city.

"It cost me 2,000 yuan ($309) to make it, so I guess that's how much it's worth."

By comparison, the cheapest 16-gigabyte version of the iPad 2 sells for 3,688 yuan in China, while the most expensive 64-gigabyte model costs 5,288 yuan.

iPads and iPhones are hugely popular in China -- the world's largest Internet market with 457 million online users -- and the launch of new models has been known to trigger fights and even crimes.

Last month, a court in the southern province of Guangdong sentenced three people to prison for stealing the design to the iPad 2 and using it to make fake tablet computers.

And Apple was forced to compensate a customer who sustained injuries in a fight at its Beijing flagship store in May, when the iPad 2 was launched. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Under existing laws, PCSO generates revenues from the sale of sweepstakes and Lotto tickets with 55 percent going to the prize fund, 30 percent to the charity fund and 15 percent to the operating fund.

Based on the 2009 COA report, the PCSO aggregate deposits from these funds amounted to P7.6 billion.

“To give the PCSO board the power to allocate the galactic sum of P7.6 billion a year is to excavate a yawning democratic deficit. The current situation is feudal and contrary to best international practice,” Santiago pointed out.

“The best practice is the One-Fund concept under which all government revenues are remitted to the Treasury and disbursed only as authorized by Congress,” she said.

“There should be no President’s Social Fund because the entire budget is already his budget. That is why we call it the President’s budget,” she explained.

Santiago said that only the President and Congress should prioritize and allocate the fund, except the five percent of the lotto earnings which shall be given to local government units (LGUs) and only 10 percent should be allocated for administrative purposes.

Meanwhile, given the choice, PCSO officials prefer that the bishops who received vehicle donations under the Arroyo administration keep them for their respective community work in their dioceses, PCSO General Manager Jose Ferdinand M. Rojas II said after the seven bishops returned them Wednesday.

Rojas said in Filipino that "if, possible, we, in the PCSO, will encourage the bishops to keep the vehicles and continue to use them for their charity works.”

“Anyway, there is no sin in asking and receiving. It is the giving that might be put in doubts,” said Rojas. (With a report from Edd K. Usman) -- http://www.mb.com.ph/

Meanwhile, Santiago, chairman of the Constitutional Amendments, Revision of Codes and Laws Committee, sought the repeal the PCSO charter and other laws that allocate PCSO funds to “alphabet-soup” national programs.

In her proposed August committee hearing on her move to repeal of the PCSO charter, Santiago said she would also endeavor to limit the PCSO board only to the function of regulating and supervising sweepstakes and lottery operations.

The lady senator also did not spare the state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) from her legislative pruning knife as she stressed that the budgets and funds of both PCSO and Pagcor constitute as a “black budget.”

“Black budget means a budget insulated from public scrutiny, confined to the dark and insulated from sunshine, sneaked through the back door instead of undergoing the open process of congressional budgetary authorization,” Santiago said.

Santiago stressed these points when she addressed the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee during its public hearing on the controversial PCSO donation to Catholic Church prelates.

Santiago also asked the Blue Ribbon Committee to immediately recommend to the Ombudsman the criminal prosecution of all PCSO officials responsible for depositing in 2009 with a private commercial bank the sum of P1.548 billion without prior approval of the Department of Finance (DoF) as required by DoF Order No. 2705.

Aside from Quevedo, the other prelates present Wednesday at the committee hearing were Bishop Rodolfo F. Beltran, DD, Apostolic Vicariate Bontoc-Lagawe; Bishop Leopoldo C. Juacian, SVD, DD, Diocese of Bangued, Abra; Most Rev. Martin S. Jumoad, DD, Roman Catholic prelate of Isabela, Basilan; Bishop Juan de Dios M. Pueblos, Diocese of Butuan; Archbishop Romulo G. Valles, and Rev. David William Antonio, who represented Most Rev. Ernesto A. Salgado, DD, Archbishop of Nueva Segovia, Caritas Nueva Segovia.

The PCSO funding for the bishops’ purchase of their 4x4 vehicles was highlighted by the letter of Bishop Pueblos to then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo asking for a donation of a rugged vehicle for his diocese which is considered the biggest diocese in Mindanao. Quevedo said the vehicles in Mindanao are ready for immediate turnover to a duly authorized PCSO official.

“The vehicles in Luzon are right now outside the Senate for immediate turnover to PCSO officials,” Quevedo said during the hearing chaired by Guingona.

The receipt of the funds from the PCSO to buy vehicles of their choice triggered questions whether it was proper, legal, or constitutional owing it to the constitutional provision on the separation of Church and State.

Senate President Pro Tempore Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, and Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson asked the bishops to reconsider their decision to return the controversial vehicles to the PCSO.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile later joined the call of Estrada, Sotto, and Lacson that the bishops should keep the vehicles which are being used for their charity and community work in rugged, mountainous areas in Luzon and Mindanao.

But Quevedo insisted that “we can do our job without encumbrances of politics and other reasons whatsoever.”

“We shall collaborate with the PCSO but the environment has changed. Mistrust has been injected into that relationship,” he added.

PCSO Chairman Margarita Juico stressed that the problem over the SUVs could not have come to fore had the funds given to the bishops to buy their vehicles had been taken from the charity fund and not from the “grants and subsidy” fund.

Enrile thanked the prelates for their patience and forbearance in clearing up the issues needed in the current democratic system “so we can operate in a civilized manner, under a rule of law.”

Guingona expressed optimism that after the Senate committee hearing, the PCSO would issue clearer guidelines in the use of PCSO funds.

“I am glad that they (protagonists in the controversy) all met here and this is a testament to the effectiveness of the Blue Ribbon Committee in seeking the truth,” he said.

The committee resumes its hearing Thursday on other issues.

These issues include questionable PCSO lottery equipment, the alleged 40-percent exaction by a PCSO officer from the advertising contracts of media organizations, and a closed door meeting with former PCSO General Manager Rosario Uriarte on the equally controversial and the alleged misuse of P325 million PCSO intelligence fund during the Arroyo administration.

Hoping to douse cold water to the heat triggered by their receipt of PCSO funds, the seven Catholic Church prelates came to the Senate public hearing and returned their vehicles â€" mostly 4x4 vehicles.

The return was officially announced by Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo, OMI, of the Archdiocese of Cotabato, when he and several prelates, particularly the seven bishops, appeared before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.

“We express our sadness that our sincere desire to help people and receive necessary assistance for doing so has confused, disturbed, and even scandalized many of the Catholic faithful,” Quevedo said.

“For this reason, regardless of whether the acquisition of the vehicles has been lawful or unlawful, constitutional or unconstitutional, we are returning the vehicles,” he added.

Donations to prelates legal - Senate

MANILA, Philippines â€" For days, seven bishops were vilified and subjected to all sorts of name-calling for receiving Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) funds they used to purchase vehicles needed for their charity work. No matter what their explanations and justifications were, public opinion was against them.

Wednesday, however, they suddenly turned immaculate after the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee considered the controversial case closed after hearing their side and the return of seven vehicles â€" the subjects of the controversy.

“There was nothing irregular. The legal test has been met â€" that is the use of funds or vehicles was for a secular purpose, to help the people and not for religious purposes. We are very satisfied. There was closure (to the controversial issue). They were able to explain their side. The PCSO said they are sorry there were no Pajeros (involved but other sports utility vehicle models),” Sen. Teofisto L. Guingona, Blue Ribbon Committee chairman said.

Before the Senate panel cleared the seven bishops, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago said the Commission on Audit (CoA) report that the grant of P6.49 million to certain dioceses of the Catholic Church violates the Constitution “is wrong and that there was no constitutional violation.”

“Under the Constitution, the power of the CoA is to audit government funds, not to settle questions of constitutional law. That power is granted only to the Supreme Court. CoA should have recommended that the constitutional issue should be raised with the Department of Justice (DoJ) which is the official legal adviser of the executive branch of the government,” she said.

I frequently hear about couples who have moved in together in order to save money or because a roommate has moved outâ€"these situational factors have nothing to do with commitment to a future together. In many cases, there is no plan for the future and limited discussion of each partner’s intentions for the relationship.  This can lead to false conceptions, with one partner thinking there is going to be a long-term commitment and the other seeing it as a temporary situation.

Convenience ra diay ang tuyo... :P

What are some common pitfalls of living together before marriage, and are there ways to prevent them from turning into problems?

One common pitfall of living together prior to marriage is finding oneself stuck permanently, when the intention was really just to test the waters. For example, a couple may decide to move in together without much forethought when one or the other needs a roommate or is having financial troubles, and then an unplanned pregnancy arises. Or, the couple may find that themselves having shared debt and property or being cosigners on a lease or even a mortgage. Then, one or the other wants to leave the relationship but cannot do so easilyâ€"they often stay when they’d have preferred to separate, because of this kind of situational factor.  Before they know it, they’ve made a commitment through circumstance without having made an emotional commitment.

It’s prudent for individuals to proceed cautiously into cohabitation. Think about the commitment you’re making and communicate with your partner about what each of your long range hopes are for the relationship. Make sure you’re on the same page.  Don’t let yourself feel pressured or rushed. Remember that it’s always easier to move in together later on once things are more certain than it will be to separate if the relationship does not work out. I often encourage couples to maintain their own residences but to spend as much time in each other’s places as they wish.  Keep in mind that the house built on a foundation of sand cannot hold up during a storm, while one built on a foundation of rock is stable and enduring.

Are there any reasons NOT to move in together before marriage?

There are some very good reasons to not cohabitate with your sweetheart.

Testing compatibility is another example of a bad reason to move in together.  Many couples did this in the past, and it simply doesn’t work. The sense of security that the marriage ceremony brings can result in changes in behavior, even for couples who lived together for years. Research on marital happiness reveals that one of the best predictors of relationship success is strong passion at the onset, which leads to strong commitment and willingness to stick it out when times get tough. A couple that goes in feeling tentative and wanting to test out compatibility is sure to make an exit when problems arise.

Does Living Together Before Marriage Really Work?

Recent studies suggest that the conventional ‘rules of relationships’ have changed. It seems that couples can cohabitate and still have a chance at a happy, committed marriage. We have become less traditional overall, and this seems to have spilled over to the relationship arena.

So why is it now possible for the old rule, stating that living together before marriage results in relationship disaster, to be rewritten?

What does the research show?

A new report from the National Center for Health Statistics concluded that there’s little difference in marital success between couples that cohabitate before marriage and those that don’t.  These findings contradict older research, as well as the common belief, that living together prior to marriage leads to divorce.

To understand what’s really going on here and to know if things have changed, we have to look below the surface.  A primary factor at play is that society’s view of cohabitation has shifted. I recall how, throughout much of the United States in the 1980’s, couples who lived together were said to be “living in sin.”  These days, there is often criticism of couples that take up residence early on in a relationship, but not all cohabitating couples are lumped into a single category. In fact, in most circles, there is little sigma for those who live together prior to marrying when there is a strong commitment. These couples are often more mature, and they may have a history of divorce. Or they may be younger couples who have dated for several years and plan to have a wedding at some point. Couples who are clearly committed and take time to plan for marriage are often given even more respect than those who rush to the altar.  In fact, with the high divorce rate, rushing and even having lavish weddings is viewed with cynicism, as so many young couples end up splitting after a few years.

Another significant shift in societal view is the belief by many that it is normal and healthy to have more than one primary relationship in one’s adult life. For example, some adults see it as natural to raise a family with one spouse and to spend post childrearing and retirement years with another person who may be quite different from one’s first partner. This second long term relationship may or may not involve legal marriage, but the commitment between the partners is often stronger than that of a marriage in early life.

On February 11, 2008, the 541 ft. (165 m) Singapore Flyer began to rotate and officially commenced its reign as the world’s tallest ever Ferris Wheel, only the ninth wheel to hold that title, and its current holder.

The modern marvel boasts 28 air-conditioned capsules, accommodating 28 passengers each, with full handicap accessibility, including restrooms, ramps and champagne and cocktail service. The public was first admitted at a ticket price (in Singapore dollars) of $8,888 â€" a lucky Asian number. Later that year, at the urgent behest of feng shui experts, the direction of the wheel’s rotation was reversed and it now spins clockwise facing the marina.

Possible contenders to the Flyer’s title as world’s tallest are projects proposed for Beijing, Berlin, Dubai and Bangkok, and to a lesser extent Las Vegas and Baghdad, although at the moment none of these prospects appear to be ready to move forward. -- http://listverse.com/
