By Lourd Ernest de Veyra |  Published: July 29, 2009 www.spot.ph

Ours is a society where polite small talk takes the form of inquisitions about body weight, oftentimes the spirit of levity masking impoliteness. But ours is also a culture that finds nothing wrong with wanton inquiries into our marital status, sexual preference, and other things that would make a foreigner faint. Ours is a culture that finds fault in fat (check out those short but brutal Lesofat ads). Granted, that’s what you get from too much Häagen Dazs and  double cheeseburgers, but your dining habits aren’t to blame, are they? Yes, it’s hormonal imbalance. Bad hormones!

So in the spirit of fighting fire with fire, we present 20 snappy retorts to that evil phrase “Uy, tumataba ka ‘ata.”

1.    “Bagong promo ng Belo Clinic.”
2.    “Hindi, baby fat lang ‘yan.”
3.    “Nagsarado kasi yung Fitness First sa amin.”
4.    “A sure consequence of increasing personal wealth kasi yan. Ikaw mukha ka pa ring dukha.”
5.    “That’s because I’m joining The Biggest Loser.”
6.    Rep has auditions for Falstaff.
7.    “Maganda nga abs mo, pero bobo ka pa rin.”
8.    “I know you meant no malice, but you have no idea how much you hurt my feelings.”
9.    “Fifty percent off on Thai Jasmine rice at Hi-Top Supermarket!”
10.    ‘Ever heard of the East Beach Diet?”
11.    Alam mo, sabi dati ni Roland Barthes, “Steak is part of the same sanguine mythology as wine. It is the heart of meat, it is meat in its pure state; and whoever partakes of it assimilates a bull-like strength. The prestige of steak evidently derives from quasi-rawness.  In it, blood is visible, natural, dense, at once compact and sectile… To eat steak therefore represents both a nature and morality.”
12.    “I mean, that’s just your opinion, man.”â€"Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski
13.    “Bakit ikaw mukha kang floorwax?”
14.    “Nagbasa ako ng Preview. Yan daw ang uso in the next six months.”
15.    “Which is why I’ve been taking Xenical. And I’ve got this nice, moist feeling inside my pants.”
16.    “Idol ko si Ate Shawee.”
17.    “Ah, but the curve is the most beautiful of all the lines.”
18.    “May sale kasi sa Tubby.”
19.    “Does the phrase ‘Dove Beauty’ mean anything to you?”
20.    “Tangina mo rin.”

Love Talk / How To Spot A Good Girl/Woman
September 15, 2009, 04:11:50 PM
There is really no "standard" litmus test for telling right away that a woman is "a good woman" or one of those "other" ones.

Here are just a few things to look for when you meet or date a girl/woman:

1. She has an open and welcoming smile that goes beyond the surface deep inside her eyes -- the window to her soul. Her eyes and her whole demeanor kind of "lights up" when you walk into the room or towards her.

2. She let's you be you. She does not want to change you - clean you up, re-make you or rename you etc - so she can love you but accepts you just the way you are.

3. She genuinely enjoys your company - isn't afraid to ask for it or tell you that she enjoys being around you. Being around her feels like being around your best friend because you can truly be just yourself -- no feeling like you're always walking on egg-shells or trying too hard to please (and always coming short). The experience of being around her is "satisfying" in its own.

4. She goes out of her way to do things she thinks will make you happy. She's the woman who'll call you just to say "hi" or "I was thinking of you" however busy/tired she is.

5. She is independent and secure within herself. She does not need constant attention and does not put pressure on you to feed her self-esteem, anxiety or worries about the future.

6. She's there for you when it's up and when it's down. She's happy out in an expensive restaurant just as she's happy sitting next to you on the couch, doing nothing.

7. She does what she says she will do. She does not play mind games but lets you know where you stand because she cares enough to treat others the way she'd like to be treated.

8. She believes that a relationship should be a 50/50 give-and- take partnership. With her it's not always "Me, me, me" but "we" and "us". Not only does she believe in a 50/50 give-and- take partnership, she takes her 50% part of the partnership seriously.

9. She shows respect for you not only in private but more so in public because she cares about how others see you and treat you.

10. She's not just nice to people she has something to gain from but is kind and treats the doorman, the customer service rep, the waitress, the beggar on the street, a child, the elderly etc. with compassion and respect. This is a telling sign of how she'll treat you once she feels she has you and isn't trying to impress you anymore.

11. She genuinely wants to be in a relationship with you and not just looking for "any man" to solve all her problems. She talks positively of the opposite sex but also not blind to their shortcomings.

12. She likes the things you like and makes an effort to do even the things you like and she doesn't.

13. She's not embarrassed or too proud to show you how much she loves you. She gives you her love and she also gives you her trust.

14. She's positive, happy with her life and always upbeat. She does not try to put other girls/women down to look better than she really is.

15. She makes you feel like you really matter even with all your faults and shortcomings-- and she's happy that you were born!

Yes, guys there are still good women out there. You just have to know what to look for. She could be just in front of your nose. She could be the woman in the next cubicle who brings you coffee at your workstation with just the right amount of sugar and cream and hangs around waiting to be noticed; or the cashier at the bank who smiles every time you walk in; or may be she is the woman you refer to as the bossy b-word - yes her, the one who is Vice President of the company you work for. She could be anyone.

DON’T FORGET TO GET A GUIDEMAP of HONGKONG AT THE AIRPORT (its free)

Cosmic Guest House (Mirador Mansion) is strategically located at the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui with utmost convenience. The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station is situated just below our building along with 37 bus lines accessible right outside our front entrance. Travelers have the choice of taking, the Citybus A21 Route, the taxis or the MTR Airport Express to reach Cosmic Guest House from the airport.
By Citybus A21 Route: Travel Time 50 minutes Cost: HK$33
Airport bus is the most popular method to get to Cosmic. Before you head toward the bus station, make sure you have enough cash on you. It’s HK$33 to get to Tsim Sha Tsui. The Airbus Station is located near Hall B on the Arrivals Level (Level 5) of Hong Kong International Airport. Find the bus stand for A21 Airport <-> Hung Hom KCR Station Route. You will see a map of the terminal. There is usually a lineup of around 10. The bus departs approximately every 15 minutes.
When you are on the bus, be sure to first secure your luggage then find a sit on the lower level. In 45 â€" 90 minutes (varies with traffic) you will reach the 13th (1st being the airport) stop â€" Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station.
Once you got off the bus, you will encounter a number of sales representatives aggressively tying to persuade you to their guest house. Some would even claim they are from Cosmic. Please ignore, and then proceed approximately 50 steps in the direction of the bus. You will then see the Mirador Mansion front entrance on your left. When you are in the elevator, hit 12th floor. When you are out, Cosmic Guest House should be within your sight.

How To Tips / How to Improve Your Reading Skills
September 07, 2009, 03:20:30 PM
Eighty-five percent of college work requires reading. How good are your reading skills? Here are steps to help you improve your reading skills:
1.  Evaluate your reading habits to find out where you need improvement. Do you "say" the words you’re reading? Do strange words slow your speed and comprehension? Do you read every word? Do you re-read sentences? Do you vary your speed to suit the material?
2.  Provide the best conditions for reading. Choose a place where you’ll have few interruptions, have good lighting, can sit in a good chair, and won’t be distracted by radio, TV or other noises. Hold the book about fifteen inches away (about the distance from your elbow to your wrist).
3.  Use your eyes efficiently. If words are blurry, get your eyes checked by a professional. Don’t "say" what you read, and don’t re-read unnecessarily. Read phrases, not every single word.
4.  Increase your vocabulary by keeping a dictionary handy, maintaining a list of new words, and knowing the origin of words.
5.  Match your speed to the material you are reading. Know what and why you’re reading. Preview the material, especially when studying. Study reading requires closer, slower reading. For leisure reading you can go faster. Be sure you get the information in graphic aids and illustrations.
6.  To improve your reading speed, practice for about 15 to 30 minutes each day, checking your rate in words-per-minute. Check your comprehension by summarizing what you read. Ideally, you want to read faster while maintaining your understanding. Therefore, use the same type of materials each time you practice to provide the consistency needed for meaningful practice.

Learn English Online / How to Teach ESL Reading
September 07, 2009, 03:16:12 PM

When considering how to teach ESL reading skills to second language learners, the most important concept to convey is that reading, like writing, is a process. Strong readers don't just sit down with a text, read it once, and completely understand it. Whether readers are aware of it or not, they employ techniques like pre-reading and making predictions to connect the particular text they are presently reading with texts they have read before. For ESL students, scaffolding this process into distinct steps is an effective way to build reading comprehension.
Pre-reading
Getting ready to read is one of the most important parts of the reading process. Situating the text in terms of its genre and audience can help ESL students approach reading with a critical mindset. Before reading the assignment, ask students to think about the following questions to encourage them to construct a context for the reading:
•   Where did the material come from? Is it an excerpt from a book, a magazine, an online article, or a journal? Knowing where the material being read comes from tells a great deal about how the piece of writing may be arranged and what its purpose is. An editorial is intended to persuade readers to believe what the author believes, whereas an article from a scholarly journal is typically written to inform.
•   Who wrote the article? Do you know anything about the author? What other types of materials has he/she written? How could you find out more about the writer? Knowledge of who the author of the material is allows ESL students to enter into the conversation as active participants in the rhetorical process and not passive observers.
•   What is the title of the piece? Can you determine what the topic of the issue that will be discussed is from the title? What else has been written about this topic? What do you already know about the issue at hand? Having ESL students relate to readings through their existing knowledge system will inspire a more personal interaction between the reader and the text.
•   Who are the intended readers? What does the writer know or assume about his/her audience? How does the author address this audience? Who might have a strong opinion about the topic the reading addresses? An understanding of audience allows ESL students a chance to better understand how writing functions to persuade, influence, entertain, or inform.
Make Predictions
Instructors will assist student comprehension by constructing questions about the reading for students to answer before they read the assigned text for the first time. Doing this helps students make predictions about the text and encourages critical interaction when they read. For example, if the students will be reading an article on animal rights, you may ask questions that help provide a background on the issue.
1.   How many groups of people can you think of that have strong feelings about animals?
2.   What are the feelings of these groups towards animals? How are they similar? How are they different?
3.   What might cause someone to change how they feel about animals?
4.   Judging by the title, what do you think the purpose of this article is?
5.   The article first appeared in People magazine? Who do you think the audience is?
Introduce Vocabulary
ESL students often struggle to understand new words and phrases. Reading exercises are an ideal way for these students to expand their working vocabularies. Instructors should create a vocabulary list of important or challenging words from the reading to hand out. Students can look up the words in a dictionary and write down the definitions. This exercise encourages ESL students to both learn the meanings of new words and phrases and to apply those meanings to the understanding of the assigned text.
First Reading
Have the students read through the text one time. Their main purpose during the first reading is to achieve a working understanding of the text. After they finish reading, have them answer questions that connect the earlier steps of the reading process with their working understanding of the text.
1.   Did any of your predictions about the text based on the title turn out to be true?
2.   What, if anything, surprised you?
3.   What is the author's purpose or argument? Is he/she trying to persuade, inform, describe, etc?
4.   What kinds of support are provided by the author to make his/her case?
5.   Does the author want the readers to take an action of any kind?
Re-Reading
After developing a working understanding of the text, students should look for the author's claims and assertions and determine if s/he backs them up effectively. Also, look for stylistic choices the author makes and analyze them for their effectiveness.
•   Highlight the major points of the writing. Note the thesis statement (the paper's main point) and the other major claims the author makes.
•   Highlight the evidence and supporting information the author provides in a different color than you used to mark the major points.
•   Mark up the text! Ask questions and write comments in the margins.
•   What is the style of the article? Formal? Informal? Funny? Scholarly? Is it effective?
Final Thoughts
The above process of how to teach ESL reading skills can be extended in many different directions depending on the purpose of the assignment, the level of the student population, etc. Students could summarize the reading or respond to it by extending an aspect of the reading they found interesting. Instructors could also assign short answer questions that further encourage critical thinking or use the exercise as a starting point for a larger writing assignment.

Health and Food / TEN WAYS TO BEAT EXAM STRESS
September 07, 2009, 03:14:05 PM
1. Set realistic expectations
It's rare for anyone to jump three grades higher overnight, so students should try not to set unrealistic goals. It is much better to plan grade improvement over a realistic time period. When expectations become more reasonable, we gain a sense of control in our lives and are able to plan and prepare ourselves both physically and psychologically.

2. Get physical
Exercise releases endorphins, which are the body's natural stress-relieving hormones. They help to dissipate much of the excess energy we build up through a heavy workload. Students should choose a form of exercise they enjoy in order to maintain motivation.

3. Prepare ahead
Advanced preparation will help students deal with exams much more effectively than being unprepared. We feel much better approaching an unfamiliar situation when we have done a bit of background research, so it is time well spent.

4. Take a break
Obvious, perhaps, but it's surprising how many people forget how important this is. Students should pace themselves during revision and take a breather every once in a while. Making time to recharge physical and emotional batteries increases productivity and reduces stress levels.

5. Relax
Any conscious effort to relax, both mentally and physically, will reduce stress. Simple activities, from curling up with a good book to singing in the shower, can bring about a state of relaxation, which is important in counterbalancing the body's response to stress.

6. Cut back on caffeine
Most of our caffeine intake comes from coffee or coke and, in small amounts, can help to keep us awake and focused. However, we only have a certain level of caffeine tolerance, so when our intake becomes excessive, we can become irritable and distracted. Similarly, alcohol or cigarettes are not the answer as they make our stress symptoms worse.

7. Get enough sleep
Sufficient sleep is essential for normal brain development. Adrenaline rushes brought about by stress can make it difficult to sleep at night and, over time, can lead to fatigue and low productivity. The average student needs about seven to eight hours sleep.

8. Balance work and leisure
"All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy," so the saying goes. But in today's world, you could add that it makes him stressed and unbalanced too. If we are to maintain a healthy perspective at school and at home, it is essential that we devote a good portion of our time to family and friends as well as individual pursuits.

9. Have a laugh
Humor can reduce stress. It puts uncomfortable feelings into perspective, giving us greater distance from them and releasing emotional discomfort and pain through the pleasure of laughter. So, the pressure is getting too much, students should stick on a comedy video or go out with friends. Some even advocate forcing yourself to laugh until you feel good.

10. Talk about your feelings
Whether you call it, venting or getting emotional support or letting it all hang out, there is no question that talking about feelings is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress. Students will feel much better if they let someone know they are struggling, rather than keeping things inside and doing nothing about them.

How To Tips / Parable of the Pencil
September 07, 2009, 02:55:56 PM
The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box.

"There are 5 things you need to know," he told the pencil, "Before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be."

"One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in Someone's hand."

"Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you'll need it to become a better pencil."

"Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make."

"Four: The most important part of you will always be what's inside."

"And Five: On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write."

The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

Now replacing the place of the pencil with you.  Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best person you can be.

One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in God's hand. And allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts you possess.

Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems in life, but you'll need it to become a stronger person.

Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

Four: The most important part of you will always be what's on the inside.

And Five: On every surface you walk through, you must leave your mark. No matter what the situation, you must continue to do your duties.

Allow this parable on the pencil to encourage you to know that you are a special person and only you can fulfill the purpose to which you were born to accomplish.

Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot make a change.

Jokes and Humor / Re: Katawa pud mo diha ...
September 07, 2009, 02:51:49 PM
There was a great eruption of a south sea island volcano, and the witch doctor appealed to the tribal chief, demanding that a virgin be sacrificed to appease the volcano.

The chief apologized, "I've used up all the virgins myself, so I guess we'll just have to get used to the noise."

Family & Parenting / for married folks, please????
March 20, 2008, 08:32:43 PM
"Relationships 101" - for married folks, please????
Let's say you had to complete a series of courses before you could be issued a marriage license, and that divorce would cost you a fine and some community service.

What might be some of the lecture topics in your "Relationships 101" class?

I'll start and please continue:

Communication -- being clear and honest without being hurtful

Honesty -- the building block of trust

Temptation -- bird in the hand versus bird in the bush

Money -- it really is the root of all evil!

Grief -- how to survive loss as a strong couple

Sharing -- it's not just about toothbrushes and housework!

"Old Habits Die Hard" -- how to know when to compromise
