PARE KO
By: Eraserheads

http://youtube.com/watch?v=YI4uuh1VV00

O pare ko,
Meron akong problema.
'Wag mong sabihin "na naman".
In-love ako
Sa isang kolehiyala.
Hindi ko maintindihan.
'Wag na nating idaan
Sa maboteng usapan
Lalo lang madaragdagan
Ang sakit ng ulo at bilbil sa tiyan.
Anong sarap,
Kami'y naging magkaibigan.
Napuno ako ng pag-asa.
Yun pala,
Hanggang doon lang ang kaya.
Akala ko ay puwede pa.
Masakit mang isipin,
Kailangan tanggapin.
Kung kailan ka naging seryoso,
Saka ka niya gagaguhin.
O Diyos ko! Ano ba naman ito?
Di ba, 'langhiya *
Nagmukha akong tanga.
Pinaasa niya lang ako.
Lecheng pag-ibig 'to.
Diyos ko,
Ano ba naman ito?
Sabi niya,
Ayaw niya munang magkasyota.
Dehins ako naniwala.
Di nagtagal,
Naging ganun na rin ang tema.
Kulang na lang ang sagot niya.
Ba't ba ang labo niya?
Di ko maipinta.
Hanggang kailan maghihintay,
Ako ay naiinis ** na.
Pero,
Minamahal ko siya.
Di biro,
T.L. ako sa kanya.
Alam kong nababaduyan ka na
Sa mga sinasabi ko
Pero sana naman ay maintindihan mo.
O pare ko,
Meron ka bang maipapayo?
Kung wala
Ay okay lang.
Kailangan lang ay
Iyong pakikiramay.
Nandito ka ay ayos na.

Me: Grew up in New Jersey, but originally from the Philippines
Them: **big smile** Oh from the Philippines! Oh my father was there in world war 2
Me: Really? **begin to have casual conversation**
Them: Oh I really love the Filipinos, they're such warm and good people.

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Sunday brushed off fresh speculation he would retire within days to save his party from electoral disaster, insisting he could still win re-election.

Howard denied reports he was considering stepping down in the face of dismal opinion polls and discontent within his conservative Liberal Party.

"My position was outlined last week and you know me, it hasn't changed," he told reporters. "All elections are tough, and I've been saying for a year this one's the toughest. But I believe the coalition can win the election."

Howard has been under intense pressure for more than a week after it was revealed that the majority of his cabinet questioned whether the coalition government would have a better chance of being returned if the 68-year-old stepped down in favour of Treasurer Peter Costello.

Ultimately, they put their support behind Howard to fight it out against a resurgent centre-left Labor Party led by Kevin Rudd.

But the speculation has continued, with Sydney Morning Herald journalist Alan Ramsey writing Saturday that Howard could be rejected at a party meeting held after the release of a new poll this week.

"His Liberal colleagues, a good many of them now as fed up as they've been despairing for much of this year, could perhaps still oust him before voters get their chance at retribution," he wrote.

"Don't think they still couldn't say, 'What have we got to lose?', and dump him for Peter Costello, even at this late stage."

But Costello said he would not challenge Howard ahead of the election.

"My position is today as it was last week and as it was last year," he said.

"I'm going to this election as a team. John Howard asked me to go to this election with him as his deputy leader and his treasurer. Last year, I said I would. I will. That's it."

Workplace Relations Minister Joe Hockey dismissed speculation that Howard would retire as "absolute rubbish" but conceded that it could further damage the government's standing in the polls.

The government has been shaken by a mounting challenge from the Labor Party under the leadership of Rudd. A Sydney Morning Herald poll this week gave Labor a 57 to 43 percent lead.

Howard, who is standing for a fifth election, last week pledged not to serve a full term as prime minister if re-elected -- his first indication of a possible retirement after 11 years in office.

Labor said Howard's standing in the polls could actually improve because of the turmoil within the Liberal Party.

"He's a man who's been under pressure, a man the majority of his senior colleagues have come to and said, It's time to go. He's forced, unwillingly out of himself, an admission about retirement," Deputy Labor leader Julia Gillard said.

"I think Australians watching that very painful episode might reward him with a little bit of a sympathy card," she told Australian television.

Howard can call an election for any Saturday between now and January 19 but has promised the national poll will be held before the end of the year.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union threatened on Monday to take action if Canada did not drop by the end of the year visa requirements for citizens from at least one new EU member from the ex-Soviet bloc.

EU countries have reciprocal agreements with other nations under which visa requirements on either side are waived. But Canada has yet to change rules under which citizens from eight eastern European countries still need visas to get in.

"The Commission urges Canada to show some tangible progress by lifting the visa requirement for one or two member states by the end of this year, otherwise appropriate measures could be proposed," the EU's executive arm said in a statement.

It did not specify what action it could take. The countries involved are Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic, Latvia Lithuania, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, all of which have joined the 27-member bloc in successive waves since the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall which marked the end of the Cold War.

World Daily News / Arctic sea route opens
September 18, 2007, 01:31:11 AM

An orange line shows the most direct route the ice-free Northwest Passage beside partially blocked Northeast passage (blue line) in this Envisat ASAR mosaic photo of the Arctic Ocean, early September, 2007. The dark gray colour represents the ice-free areas, while green represents areas with sea ice. The Northwest Passage has opened up fully because of melting sea ice, clearing a long-sought but historically impassable route between Europe and Asia, the European Space Agency said.

Sat Sep 15, 8:13 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - The Arctic's Northwest Passage has opened up fully because of melting sea ice, clearing a long-sought but historically impassable route between Europe and Asia, the European Space Agency said.

Sea ice has shrunk in the Arctic to its lowest level since satellite measurements began 30 years ago, ESA said, showing images of the now "fully navigable" route between the Atlantic and the Pacific.

A shipping route through the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic has been touted as a possible cheaper option to the Panama Canal for many shippers.

"We have seen the ice-covered area drop to just around 3 million square km," said Leif Toudal Pedersen of the Danish National Space Centre, describing the drop in the Arctic sea ice as "extreme."

The figure was about 1 million sq km (386,870 sq miles) less than previous lows in 2005 and 2006, Pedersen added.

The Northeast Passage through the Russian Arctic remained partially blocked, but in the light of the latest developments it may well open sooner than expected, Pedersen said.

Polar regions are very sensitive to climate change, ESA said, noting that some scientists have predicted the Arctic would be ice free as early as 2040.

Almost all experts say global warming, stoked by human use of fossil fuels, is happening about twice as fast in the Arctic as elsewhere on the planet. Once exposed, dark ground or sea soak up far more heat than ice and snow.

September and March generally mark the annual minimum and maximum extent respectively of Arctic sea ice.

The ESA announcement on its Web site came amid a scramble for sovereignty rights in the Arctic.

Russia, which recently planted its national flag on the seabed beneath the ice of the North Pole, has been staking its claim to a large chunk of the resource-rich Arctic region.

Countries such as Russia are hoping for new shipping routes or to find oil and gas.

Canada has also been pressing its Arctic sovereignty claim and has announced plans for a deep-water port at Nanisivik near the eastern entrance of the Northwest Passage, which will allow it to refuel its military patrol ships.

TOKYO - Two candidates vying to become Japan's next prime minister began nationwide campaigns Monday, avoiding thorny domestic issues but vowing to keep pressure on North Korea to resolve the past kidnapping of Japanese citizens.

The two are running to replace Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who abruptly announced last week he was quitting for exhaustion and stress-related stomach problems. Abe is likely to be hospitalized for the rest of the week because he has shown no signs of recovery, the Kyodo News agency reported.

Yasuo Fukuda, a veteran moderate widely considered the front-runner, and the more hawkish former Foreign Minister Taro Aso are the only candidates in a Sept. 23 ruling-party leadership race.

The new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party is ensured election as prime minister because of the party's majority in the lower house of parliament. Both candidates have said Japan cannot afford to drop out of the global war on terrorism and must extend its naval mission in support of U.S.-led coalition troops.

Since 2001, Japan's navy has been providing fuel for coalition forces in Afghanistan under an anti-terrorism law that has been extended three times.

Abe had staked his job on pushing through the extension of the naval mission. But he resigned abruptly Sept. 12, leaving the future of the mission in limbo and triggering political confusion in the world's second-biggest economy.

Skirting issues such as money scandals that brought down Abe's Cabinet and a pension payout problem, the two spoke together in the western city of Osaka and turned to relations with North Korea as their primary message.

"I want to resolve the issue of abduction, personally. I want everyone to trust me and give me your support," Fukuda said. "I want to deepen our ties with our Asian neighbors, including China, and bring peace to this region," he said.

Fukuda, 71, has reiterated he would stay away from the Yasukuni shrine, vilified by China and South Korea for its links to past Japanese militarism.

Once the longest serving top government spokesman, has said he will take a softer line than Abe on the abduction issue. Abe's insistence on a resolution threatened to upset negotiations on the Communist country's nuclear weapons.

Aso took a hard line.

"People say dialogue, but there has never been any dialogue without pressure," he said.

North Korea returned five abductees in 2002, claiming the rest were dead. Abe demanded proof that no more Japanese were in North Korea, and he refused to give aid to the country under a regional disarmament deal earlier this year.

Aso is generally seen as a long shot and has conceded his chances look dim when the party votes.

During a talk show Sunday, Aso, 66, did not contest a moderator's suggestion that Fukuda would most likely win the election, in which votes are cast by LDP lawmakers and regional representatives. But he said he decided to run "if only for the sake of holding an open election."

World Daily News / China steps up scrutiny of U.S. food
September 18, 2007, 01:28:41 AM
By JOE McDONALD, AP Business Writer

BEIJING - China has sharply increased inspections of imported U.S. food, escalating a dispute with Washington over product safety and leaving American beef piling up in warehouses and delaying shipments of black pepper and other goods.

Authorities who used to inspect as little as 5 percent of imported goods now check every shipment of American poultry, snack foods and other products, companies and trade groups say.

"I suspect they are doing this to keep the pressure on the United States to relent on some of these (food safety disputes), because the U.S. is taking a very tough stand on Chinese products," said James Rice, the China country manager for Tyson Foods Inc., the world's largest meat processor.

Chinese authorities banned chicken imports from two Tyson plants in June after salmonella was found in shipments from them, Rice said. But he said the company, which sells about $200 million worth of chicken to China every year, still was allowed to import from its 167 other facilities.

The stepped-up inspections are the latest volley after a series of large-scale product recalls â€" from bad pet food to dangerous toothpaste and toys â€" raised scrutiny of Chinese-made products in the U.S.

On Saturday, Beijing said it rejected 18.4 tons of American pork because it contained ractopamine, a drug that is used by U.S. hog farmers to produce leaner meat but is banned in China.

The United States restricted imports from China of five types of seafood in July after tests found unapproved drugs â€" a move that Beijing criticized as improper and excessive.

The tougher Chinese inspection regime is forcing importers and retailers to adjust shipping and delivery schedules, although so far they say the delays have not harmed their bottom lines.

But the moves add to tensions in a relationship that is strained by China's multibillion-dollar trade surplus with the United States. Chinese officials have suggested the U.S. government might be using safety concerns as an excuse to block imports from China.

A U.S. Embassy spokeswoman declined to comment on whether Washington has complained about the increased inspections.

China is a major market for U.S. soybeans and chicken â€" although there appeared to be no immediate effect on soy shipments â€" and sales of citrus, beef and processed food also are growing.

It is unclear how much U.S. food has been rejected in China's latest campaign or whether the rate has increased. China's product safety agency, the Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, did not respond to a request for comment.

The agency, known as AQSIQ, said in June it would step up inspections of U.S. food for chemical or biological contamination. It cited the discovery of excessive bacteria and sulfur dioxide in raisins, dried oranges and health care products from several American companies.

Rice said the AQSIQ director, Wang Daning, told him last week that he mobilized every available employee to minimize delays for shippers, sending people who work at desk jobs to join the agency's 7,000 field inspectors.

"He said, `I'm under a lot of pressure. I have a lot of pressure now to ensure what's going to the U.S. is safe, and what's coming in is safe,'" Rice said.

In Hong Kong, shipments of U.S. beef bound for China's mainland are piling up in refrigerated warehouses while they await inspection, said John Nam, program director in Hong Kong for the U.S. Meat Export Federation, a trade group.

"Over the past two months, we saw that plenty of shipments to China have stayed quite a while in Hong Kong warehouses, which means turnaround time has been lengthened," he said.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has seen brief delays in deliveries of black pepper and other imported groceries, according to a company spokesman, Jonathan Dong. The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer has more than 60 stores in China selling food and other goods.

"In a few cases, there was a few days' delay because of extra paperwork or whatever," Dong said.

Chinese grocery stores and importers said that so far they have seen little impact on their business from the increased inspections.

"We just need to arrange our schedule better and make more time for the inspection," said the sales manager of Shanghai's ID Food Center Inc., which he said imports nuts, wine, cookies and chocolate from the United States. He would give only his surname, Sun.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Major handset vendors have much more to gain than to lose from the buzz Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) coveted iPhone will create when it arrives in European stores for the key shopping season ahead of Christmas.

As Britain, Germany and France await news this week on which telecom operators will be awarded contracts to sell the iPhone in Europe's major markets, Apple's rivals reckon they will profit either way.

For one thing the iPhone will have a tough time justifying its price tag in Europe, expected to be around 399 euros ($553), in a market where almost all but the most basic pay-as-you-go phones are given away for free with operator contracts.

Sales of the iPhone, which has been available in the United States since the end of June, do not approach those of its competitors there -- Apple has sold a million iPhones so far, about the amount Nokia (NOK1V.HE) sells every day.

At the same time the iPhone marketing campaign has raised awareness about extra features in phones -- which can only benefit the likes of Nokia, Sony Ericsson (6758.T)(ERICb.ST) and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), who have strong portfolios of music focused phones.

"The iPhone is hugely positive for the handset market," said CCS analyst Ben Wood, adding that those operators who do not get an iPhone contract would look for alternative products to keep their clients.

"Who's got the problem? Operators. Who gains? handset makers. For every one operator that gets iPhone -- there are three to four who don't," he added.

In Britain, Vodafone has already unveiled a range of new handsets and services for the Christmas period including an exclusive music service offering unlimited tracks in preparation for the iPhone's arrival.

Speculation has swirled for months over which European telecom operators will sell the iPhone, which combines the popular iPod music player and a Web browser.

In Germany, a source told Reuters last week it would be sold through Deutsche Telekom's (DTEGn.DE) retail outlets at an initial price of 399 euros.

Apple is expected to hand a deal to Spanish Telefonica's (TEF.MC) O2 UK unit, and France Telecom's (FTE.PA) Orange unit is expected to win a French deal, analysts say, though the companies have maintained strict silence about any deal.

Apple signed up top U.S. telecoms operator AT&T Inc. (T.N) in an exclusive deal for at least two years to sell the phone in the United States. But earlier this month, Apple cut the U.S. price for the iPhone to $399 from $599.

Analysts said Apple is likely to benefit from its strong brand and dedicated followers when starting European sales, but a limited offering and signing deals with just one telecom operator per country would put a lid on its sales hopes.

"You need a brand, a product and a distribution to get market share. They got the brand, but the product is limited and distribution is rather limited," said Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics.

"The impact would not be meaningful largely because of the price... it looks like the product price is not subsidized," said Nomura analyst Richard Windsor.

At a price of around 399 euros, the iPhone faces competition from operators which offer models such as Nokia's N95 -- which has faster Internet connection via 3G, a 5-megapixel camera and a GPS positioning chip -- for free on longer contracts.

Analysts pointed also to the difficulty of typing SMS messages on a touch screen, long contracts, built-in batteries and 3G capability.

"We don't see enormous impact as 3G is becoming a must in smartphones. There are no meaningful EDGE networks in Europe," said Nomura's Windsor.

But not all analysts agreed.

"It doesn't actually matter, people buy it as a status symbol," said CCS's Ben Wood.

ANGOULEME, France (Reuters) - Everything must be done to avoid the prospect of war with Iran, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said on Monday, a day after his foreign minister said Paris should prepare for that possibility.

The United States, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China have backed two rounds of U.N. sanctions against Iran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment and other sensitive work that could potentially be used to make nuclear weapons.

Washington is leading a drive in the Security Council for a third sanctions resolution to punish Iran over enrichment.

France, which strongly opposed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, has taken the lead since Nicolas Sarkozy was elected president in calling for further sanctions on Iran and warning of possible military action.

Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner ratcheted pressure on Tehran on Sunday, saying France had to prepare for the prospect of war with Iran, though that was not an immediate danger.

"Everything must be done to avoid war," Fillon told reporters on a visit to the town of Angouleme in western France.

"France's role is to lead towards a peaceful solution of a situation that would be extremely dangerous for the rest of the world," he said. He added that Kouchner was right to say the situation was dangerous and should be taken seriously.

Kouchner said in an interview on LCI television and RTL radio on Sunday: "We must prepare for the worst," adding: "The worst, sir, is war."

Iran denies it is secretly seeking nuclear weapons, saying it only wants atomic technology to generate electricity.

It has however, ignored the U.N. Security Council's demands that it suspend enrichment, and Washington has called a meeting of major powers on September 21 to discuss further sanctions.

A senior Iranian spokesman accused Kouchner of stirring up a crisis with Iran.

"Using crisis-making words is against France's high historical and cultural position and is against France's civilization," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency.

Sarkozy raised the prospect of war last month when he said that a diplomatic push by the world's major powers was the only alternative to "the Iranian bomb or the bombing of Iran," which he said would be "catastrophic."

APPEAL FOR CALM

France has also said the European Union should consider imposing its own sanctions against Tehran, outside the U.N. framework, and Kouchner said Paris had asked companies including oil giant Total not to bid in Iranian tenders.

Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), appealed for calm.

"We need to be cool and not hype the Iranian issue," he told reporters on the sidelines of the IAEA's annual conference in Vienna.

U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, asked by reporters at an IAEA meeting in Vienna whether Kouchner coordinated his comments with Washington, said: "Nothing is on or off the table. (But we) remain determined to use diplomacy to resolve this matter."

German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger, without mentioning Kouchner by name, said Berlin refused to even think of war as a possibility, adding that the German government was strongly engaged in diplomacy.

"All other options are not up for discussion," he said.

Germany has said further sanctions may not be necessary if Iran helps clear up all outstanding questions about its nuclear program under an August 21 agreement with the IAEA.

France has dismissed the agreement as insufficient because it does not address the issue of suspension, but Fillon said war would be a last resort.

"A confrontation with Iran is the last extreme that any political leader can hope for," Fillon said. "We are in a situation of very great tension."

World Daily News / Saudi women push for right to drive
September 18, 2007, 01:25:15 AM
By DONNA ABU-NASR, Associated Press Writer
20 minutes ago

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia - For the first time ever, a group of women in the only country that bans female drivers have formed a committee to lobby for the right to get in the driver's seat. They plan to petition King Abdullah in the next few days for that privilege.

Members of the Committee of Demanders of Women's Right to Drive Cars say they want to have their petition delivered to the king by Sunday, Saudi Arabia's national day.

"We would like to remind officials that this is, as many have said, a social and not religious or political issue," said Fowziyyah al-Oyouni, a founding member of the committee. "And since it's a social issue, we have the right to lobby for it."

The government is not likely to respond to the plea because the issue is so sensitive and divisive. But al-Oyouni said the petition will at least highlight what many Saudi men and women consider as a "stolen right."

The driving ban applies to all women, Saudi and foreign, and forces families to hire live-in drivers. Women whose families cannot afford $300-400 a month for a driver rely on male relatives to drive them to work, school, shopping or the doctor's.

The last time the question of women drivers was raised was two years ago, when Mohammed al-Zulfa, a member of the unelected Consultative Council, asked his colleagues to just think about studying the possibility of allowing women over age 35 or 40 to be allowed to drive â€" unchaperoned on city streets but accompanied by a male guardian on highways.

His suggestion touched off a fierce controversy that included calls for his removal from the council and stripping him of Saudi citizenship as well as accusations he was encouraging women to commit the double sins of discarding their veils and mixing with men.

The uproar underscored the divisions in Saudi society between the guardians of its super-strict Islamic codes of behavior and those who want to usher in more liberal attitudes.

Conservatives, who believe women should be shielded from strange men, say women in the driver's seat will be free to leave home alone and go when and where they please. They also will be able to unduly expose their eyes while driving and interact with strange men such as traffic police and mechanics.

But supporters of female drivers say the prohibition exists neither in law nor Islam, but is based on fatwas, or edicts, by senior clerics who say women at the wheel create situations for sinful temptation.

Women tried to defy the ban once and paid heavily for it. In November 1990, when U.S. troops were in Saudi Arabia following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, some 50 women got behind the wheel and drove family cars. They were jailed for one day, their passports were confiscated and they lost their jobs.

Although the furor over al-Zulfa's comments has abated, anything that touches on the issue provokes strong feelings.

In the weeks ushering in the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which began Thursday, a furious debate erupted in a Saudi newspaper over a Ramadan television serial that takes up the hardships the ban has caused.

In the serial, "Amsha bint Ammash," the main character, Amsha, loses her dad and is forced to relocate from her village to Jiddah. After an unsuccessful round of job searching, she decides to become a taxi driver â€" a job open only for men.

To get around the ban, she disguises herself as a man, adding a mustache and donning the white thobe, or robe, and red-and-white-checkered headdress Saudi men wear.

When the program was first advertised, some reacted with shock that a Saudi woman was not only portraying a man, but also one who drives. Conservatives say women should not emulate men in behavior or dress.

The controversy has forced the serial's writer, Abdullah Abdul-Amer, to issue a statement stressing that the goal of the program, aired on the Lebanese satellite channel LBC, "is not to incite women to drive."

"All I wanted to do was raise our contemporary issues from a Saudi viewpoint and through comedy," said Abdul-Amer. But that has not appeased Saudis fighting against women drivers.

In a letter to Al-Hayat daily titled "Amsha, we don't need you," reader Iman Abdul-Wahhab wondered why the driving issue "has become an obsession for many, Saudis and non-Saudis."

"Has this become a weak point for us?" she wrote. "As a Saudi girl, I say, 'No.'"

"This is a tradition that has become acceptable," she added. "No one has any right to use it as a means to mock or ridicule."

On Monday, another Saudi newspaper, Al-Watan, ran an article about a major car dealership sending out invitations for women in Jiddah to come and try out a new family sedan for 24 hours. But the dealership stressed that the invitation was for women to come along with their drivers, who are the only ones permitted to test drive the cars.

Al-Oyouni said she understands that some women are against the issue.

"We won't force it on those who don't want it," she said.

The petition, circulated electronically for signatures, has received a lot of support from within the kingdom, from both men and women, as well as from outside Saudi Arabia, said al-Oyouni.

"This is a right that has been delayed for too long," she said.

The great philosopher, nationalist, propagandist once said,

"We are entirely in accord in admitting the existence of God. How can I doubt his when I am convinced of mine. Whoso recognizes the effect recognizes the cause. To doubt God is to doubt one's own conscience, and in consequence, it would be to doubt everything; and then what is life for? Now then, my faith in God, if the result of a ratiocination may be called faith, is blind, blind in the sense of knowing nothing. I neither believe nor disbelieve the qualities which many attribute to him; before theologians' and philosophers' definitions and lucubrations of this ineffable and inscrutable being I find myself smiling. Faced with the conviction of seing myself confronting the supreme Problem, which confused voices seek to explain to me, I cannot but reply: 'It could be; but the God that I foreknow is far more grand, far more good: Plus Supra!...I believe in (revelation); but not in revelation or revelations which each religion or religions claim to possess. Examining them impartially, comparing them and scrutinizing them, one cannot avoid discerning the human 'fingernail' and the stamp of the time in which they were written... No, let us not make God in our image, poor inhabitants that we are of a distant planet lost in infinite space. However, brilliant and sublime our intelligence may be, it is scarcely more than a small spark which shines and in an instant is extinguished, and it alone can give us no idea of that blaze, that conflagration, that ocean of light. I believe in revelation, but in that living revelation which surrounds us on every side, in that voice, mighty, eternal, unceasing, incorruptible, clear, distinct, universal as is the being from whom it proceeds, in that revelation which speaks to us and penetrates us from the moment we are born until we die. What books can better reveal to us the goodness of God, his love, his providence, his eternity, his glory, his wisdom? 'The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork'."

He was a man not of his own time, such innate passion that is similar to great enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Locke, Baron de Montesqueau, Machiavelli. The soul of Rizal....

Oh what an glorious pleasure it must have been to have met and talk to the man that was José Protasio Mercado Rizal Alonso y Realonda! A legend in his own time.

My latest learnings from Lorenzo, Mike, Ashton,
and continuing lessons from Ms Da Bensi, c2h4, zamoralorna, Galen and Franklin
so far:

1. Identify the town where I have lots of relatives.
2. Prepare money, preferably more than 1 sack of it.
3. Identify and buy connections.
4. Take Dan Lim as teacher
5. Be a fisherman politician
6. Take plenty of sleep while tumbling in bed
7. Copy Marcos' technique on infra projects as illusions of development
8. Use the Church (and other religious groups)
9. Be like the acute businessmen, bring in foreign investors
10. Be a disciple of Mike Ligalig of Tubag Bohol Fame
11. Be talented, a friend to everyone (even to the enemies), throw away lots of cash
12. Be a political opportunist

This is great! more lessons are coming

Most important of all things, sir GEC, is to establish the authority of government and the presence of the police force (internal security forces: arrest and detain subvertist activities and punish them accordingly under the auspices and framework of human rights and your government's jurisdiction). The rule of law must be properly enforced to so as to prevent a coup de tat.

Whenever government is challenged, it must show its weight so as to reaffirm its legitimacy.
+++++++++

Gec, have you ever heard of the Broken Windon Theory in political science?

The idea is that a broken window begets a broken window. If one person violates a law and there is no reaction or punishment for that action or if no one cares, it will eventually beget more violations of societal laws and social norms.

The idea of government is to 'fix' the broken window, which is the metaphorical use to represent a violated law, and make people pay for their mideeds in order to promote the idea of public order. Without this public order, you will have the exact opposite, which is public disorder. And public disorder begets chaos and is the epitome of a failed state.

It is the role of government (or in this case, a political dynasty) to enforce laws so as to show the need to respect authority. Without the respect for authority and fear of the law and jurisprudencial retribution, the people will not respect each other's individual rights, mainly: Liberty, life and property.

It is government's role to provide a format to which citizens must follow in order to  live in a safe and orderly society. An ordered society leads to progress. That in itself is the prime duty of government.

Cheers,,

YOU and I -- Michael Buble

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTqIepbBfC4&NR=1

Here we are
On earth together
It's you and I
God has made us fall in love
It's true
I've really found
Someone like you
Will it stay
The love you feel for me
Will you say
That you will be by my side
To see me through
Until my life is through
Well in my mind
We can conquer the world
In love you and I
You and I, you and I...
I'm glad
At least in my life
I've found someone
That may not be here forever
To see me through
But I found strength in you
Cause in my mind
You will stay here always
In love you and I
You and I, you and I
You and I, you and I
You and I
In my mind
We can conquer the world
In love you and I
You and I, you and I
You and I...

YOU'RE STILL THE ONE (Shania Twain)

When I first saw you, I saw love.
And the first time you touched me,
I felt love.
And after all this time, you're still the one I love.

Looks like we made it
Look how far we've come my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew we'd get there someday

They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together still going strong

(You're still the one)
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life
(You're still the one)
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss good night

Ain't nothin' better
I'm glad we didn't listen
Look at what we would be missin

They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together still going strong

(You're still the one)
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life
(You're still the one)
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss good night

(You're still the one)
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life
(You're still the one)
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss good night

I'm so glad we made it
Look how far we've come my baby

Hmm...i was thinking of exactly the same thing, Mike. Na insulted ba ja lang ko--kai i try to treat everyone in here with respect and sensibility, pero, ma sakit pud ta ug ipa-buangon ta sa uban. Naa man jud ko respect nija, pero negative baja iyang comments oi--mo ignore lang ko sa gi ingoon niya nako--pero kalingaw man jud na siya ingana. Dili ra jud ako gi matabot, ning sulti pood na siya sa other people--sa ubang conversations sa different topics pood.

Gusto ko mo have proper dialogue nija baya, kai naa man ko respect for him, pero its hard to retain that respect with the kinds of words he uses, which my own father doesn't even use towards me. Dili lang ko gusto naa'y bad relations bitaw? Kai di pood go gusto ma-hated ba; okey ra if mo respect ang different view.

Ah, I'll just let this fly over my shoulders. The good Lord said "turn the other cheek" and I shall do just that.

++++

Mao ni sa moral of the message: Bahala pood nag uban na suko nimo--ayaw na lang ta mo pariho nila. Turn the other cheek--but defend yourself when have to. Afterall, a sheppard has to fight of the wolves some times to protect his sheep.

Okay, as much as I love tubag bohol, there are some certain individuals in this forum who are opposing to everything some people say, and become rather hostile and abusive, when their views are challenged--and proven wrong. I will not name that certain individual, however, I would like to ask how we should respond or treat them?

I as a person, try to look past their callous actions in name calling, and as what a friend once said "pre-pubescent" attitude.

I do feel sorry for that person because he interprets everything as an attack to what ever I post or decry it as 'propaganda'. lol. So now views that dont relate to his are 'propaganda'?

Should I and other people respond to his comments with the same fashion? Or continue to respond to some of his points and 'ignore' his negative remarks in the side?

Marcos downfall could not only be pinpointed to a woman...but to the greediness of his circle of friends...what you call cronies... they took advances of his goodness...

Absolutely true. President Ferdinand Marcos, was a man who brought advances to Bohol--not counting the roadside projects, irrigation systems, and electricity that spearheaded development of our island. Marcos was a man of the people, a brilliant man who earned his Juris Doctorate while in prison, kaya mo na, and his predecessor, then President Jose P. Laurel said this about Marcos, "He will be the future of the Republic and will become president in the future". Evidently it was so.

The Marcos that I admire is not his negative qualities, for he, as a man, had many good qualities aside from his bad ones. People may say whatever they want of President Marcos, but they cannot deny that he was a man of strategy, a man of strong political will, a man who indirectly contributed to the awakening of the sleeping Filipino Nationalism and democratic fervor.

He was a man who not only fought off the NPA, the MILF, MNLF as well as external forces that were challenging the authority of the Republic of the Philippines--and effectively destroyed the political armies of the pre-Martial law years, a man who stamped out the major threat of the communist threat as a mere 'pest', and a man who crushed the pro-separatist MNLF/MILF with his affirmative military campaign in the south--to preserve and retain the authority and unity of the Philippine Republic.

Marcos transcends political science---as he was a man who mastered its theories and postulates, he IS a man who is studied by students around the world---and regarded by academians and law makers as a 'perfect politician'.

Development of native patriotism

The belated development of Philippine nationalism was caused by the natives' tendency to be regionalistic. The geography of the Philippines did not help. The Philippines is insular and the people were divided by waters. In fact, the term "Filipino" originally means Spaniards born in the Philippines and not the native inhabitants. But certain events eventually led to the development of native patriotism. Things that happened which transcended the cultural and geographical boundaries that had been barriers to the unification of the inhabitants of the archipelago.

The first break happened in the early 1830s when Spain, highly influenced by the revolutions in Europe and in Latin America, opened the Philippines to international trade. This led to the rise of a Middle Class from which came the ilustrado elites that soon became the main agitators against the Spanish Regime. The liberalism of Europe arrived through books and other literature. Jean Jacques Rousseau's Social Contract and John Locke's Second Treatise on Civil Government became the primary sources for the development of nationalistic ideals. Such ideals were mostly understood by the ilustrados--some became the future leaders of the Philippine Revolution.

In 1869, following a liberal victory in Spain, Carlos Ma. de la Torre was assigned as the Governor-General of the Philippines. He became loved by the people because of his liberal reforms in the government, which include the giving of privileges to military personnel exempting them from forced labor, taxes, and tributes. De la Torre (1869-1871) became the most-loved Spanish Governor-General of the Philippines. His liberal regime gave the natives a point of comparison between a liberal government and the conservative absolutist government (absolutism) of the past.

During de la Torre's regime, the native clergy, who were waging a struggle for the Filipinization of the Philippine Church became an ally of the Governor-General. Headed by Father Jose Burgos, the native clergy wanted to rid the Philippine church of Spanish friars. The Filipinization Controversy was deeply seeded on Spanish racial prejudice against the native priests. The Spanish friars, agitated by Burgos, wanted Burgos out of the picture; but they were not yet presented with an opportunity. The opportunity came when dela Torre was recalled back to Spain in 1871. He was replaced by the brutish, Gov. Gen. Rafael Izquierdo.

Izquierdo took back all the privileges and reforms that de la Torre instituted. As a response, the military personnel, headed by a certain Sergeant La Madrid, of the Cavite arsenal staged a mutiny by 1872. The Spanish friars had their chance. They convinced Izquierdo that it was Burgos, together with Fathers Mariano Gomez and Jacinto Zamora, who masterminded the mutiny. Months later, the three priests were executed. The execution of the Gomburza became a spark among the educated ilustrados. That same year, native patriotism (and nationalism) was born and the ilustrados launched in Europe the Propaganda Movement.

The Propaganda Movement (1872-1892) called for the assimilation of the Philippines as a province of Spain so that the same laws will be applied in the Philippines and that the inhabitants of the Philippines will experience the same civil liberties and rights as that of a Spanish citizen. Men like Marcelo H. del Pilar, Graciano Lopez Jaena, and Jose Rizal bombarded both the Spanish and Filipino public with nationalist literature. Rizal's novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo became the bibles of Philippine nationalism. This time, the term Pilipino was not only for Spaniards born in the Philippines but was generically applied to every inhabitants born in the Philippine Islands. The movement ended in a failure, but the literature that resulted from it became the source of what came to be Philippine nationalism.

Katipunan and the Revolution
As the movement was failing in Europe, Jose Rizal returned to the Philippines and created his La Liga Filipina in 1892. It also failed after his arrest a just few days after the creation of the group. The group split into two: the ilustrado elites formed their own Cuerpo de Compromisarios, while the lowly ilustrados formed the revolutionary Katipunan. The former disappeared into oblivion, while the latter started the Philippine Revolution (1896-1898) by 1896, culminating both the formation of patriotic sentiment and nationalistic ideals.

Moro nationalism
See also Islam in the Philippines and Moro people.
The Philippine nationalism that emerged after the Propaganda Movement and the Philippine Revolution was only limited to the people of Visayas to Luzon, and may be to some extent, northern portions of Mindanao. Generally, the islands of Sulu, Palawan, and Mindanao had a different story. These islands had been once dominated by two powerful Muslim Sultanates prior to the arrival of the Spaniards: the Sultanate of Sulu and the Sultanate of Maguindanao. Never did the Spaniards take sufficient control of these islands and the people came to clearly distinguish themselves from those from Visayas and Mindanao. For more than three centuries, the people in these islands waged war against the Spanish Empire. Their nationalism is different since it is deeply rooted in their religion--Islam.

Present struggle for revival and the "True Filipino"
Modern-day Philippine nationalism is highly conceptualized by revolutionary historians. Teodoro Agoncillo emphasized the role of the people in making their own history. Renato Constantino emphasized the revolutionary theoretical groundwork for the making of new "True Filipino". Someone who can transcend the cultural and geographical boundaries that had been the cause for disunity. Someone who can shed away his western soul and create the New Filipino identity. Other historians, like Rudy B. Rodil, work for the destruction of the boundaries between Moros and Filipinos--suggesting that a True Filipino does not live in the prejudices of religious belief.

One common theme among all is the recognition of the threat of American intervention and Globalization. As long as there will be no strong leader to help in the development of a new Philippine nationalism, then it can be considered dead, for now.

Bohol to host five Miss Earth candidates
Provincial Government Media Affairs Office

The provincial government will host five of the about 90 candidates of Miss Earth 2007 which events span from October 25 to November 2, which will give a chance for Bohol’s eco-tourism factors to be aired over at least 35 television networks in different countries.

The Carousel Productions, Inc. proposed to the provincial government that by hosting the candidates, Bohol’s environmental advocacy will get international mileage and will be featured as one of the tourist destinations in the Philippines.

Bohol will accommodate four Miss Earth delegates and one Miss Philippines-Earth  winner for two days.
The telecast over ABS-CBN at 9:30 in the evening of November 11 will be replayed in 35 countries on Star World Channel, the largest cable television network in Asia and the Middle East and over 26 countries through The Filipino Channel and some participating countries in their local television stations.

The Miss Earth delegates will visit different Asian countries to see the highlights on peace, culture, environmental issues and tourism industry.

They will also visit the different tourist spots in the Philippines and, at the same time, experience the taste of the Filipino culture and hospitality.

There will also be a search for “Li’l Earth Angels” among boys aging seven to ten years old at the different malls and schools in different municipalities, environmental campaigns against global warming in schools, tree-planting, clean-up drive, and waste segregation, among others.

Special events include fashion shows showcasing swimsuit, long gown, talent and national costume competitions in different establishments. (AV-PGMA)

Mike, will they be staying primarily in Tagbilaran or will they be touring the whole island?

Here is another video that I also like, which is about Islam. The song is very religious---and trembles my bone with faith--and it is very beautiful. It does solidify the idea that the Lord God, is one and TRUE. Be we call him Dios, Il Dio, Lord, Jehovah, Yaweh, and Allah.

He is the Truth, the Path, the Way.

Here is a beautiful islamic song dedicated to GOD. I am truly awed by their faith.
