- BANAT NEWS

Bible Study / Re: The Beatitudes
July 25, 2011, 12:56:26 PM
The First Beatitude: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The meaning of the word "poor" in Greek means one who has nothing and is completely empty. Was Jesus saying the economically poor are blessed? No, for there is no spirituality in poverty. Poverty in itself is not blessed, because the poor can be as arrogant and as ungodly and as lost as the rich. So what does it mean to be poor in spirit? It means that the poor are those who realize that they can never achieve salvation on their own and instead put their complete faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

The poor in spirit are those who are not self-assertive, self-reliant, self-confident, self-centered, or self-sufficient. The poor in spirit are not baptized in the waters of self-esteem. They do not boast in their God given characteristics such as their birth, their family, their nationality, their education, their physical looks, their race, their wealth, or their culture. None of that matters. The poor in spirit are those who are conscious of their sins and know in their hearts that they are completely unworthy of the grace that a most holy and loving God pours down upon them. They realize that all their righteousness is, as Isaiah said, like filthy rags before a holy God.

So poor in spirit means that we come to God, conscious of our sins and our utter lack of righteousness. It means that we profess that we are totally unqualified to commune with, and have fellowship with God, and that we do not deserve any of the gifts that God is trying to bestow upon us. The poor in spirit realize that all our assets are actually liabilities before God, and that we should view these assets as Paul viewed them--as loss, as garbage, as rubbish.

Same-sex nuptials could boost New York economy, tourism revenue to tune of $400 million a year
BY Orev Yaniv
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Sunday, July 24th 2011, 5:39 PM

Same sex marriage could be a big boon to New York's tourism, wedding industries.
Aaron Showalter for News

Same-sex nuptials-kicked off Sunday with rainbow flags-could bring pots of gold to everyone from wedding planners to estate lawyers.

The economic boost from the new marriage law is estimated at nearly $400 million over the next three years, according to a recent state Senate report.

HUNDREDS OF GAY, LESBIAN COUPLES WED

More couples will be getting married, the wedding biz expects, and many of them will be having more lavish celebrations. Surveys have shown that gay couples often have more disposable incomes-especially in the city, where the price of the average wedding is about $70,000, more than twice the national average.

"They really want to go all out, they want a very posh wedding," said Andrea Correale, president of Elegant Affairs, a five-star event-planning company that has been getting "a flurry of calls" in recent weeks.

"The fact that it's actually legal, they are so elated, ," she said, describing gay marriage as " a real shot in the arm for high-end companies."

Tourism boosters, led by Mayor Bloomberg, has embraced the newly marriage-eligible-advertising the new law in anticipation of as many as 20,000 couples traveling here in coming months to tie the knot.

"Overall, it's a boon for many industries," said Richard Kallman, CEO of CupcakeStop, a mobile shop that caters and bakes wedding cakes and has already booked a number of same-sex celebrations.

LIVE COVERAGE: THE FIRST DAY OF GAY MARRIAGE IN NEW YORK

"As time goes on, it will become a much bigger part of our business," he predicted. "It will affect many industries."

Those industries aren't just dressmakers and florists.

Most other states and the federal government still ban gay marriage, raising a host of legal issues - and generating income for lawyers and financial planners.

Kathryn Hamm, president of the web site GayWeddings.com, cautioned that party planners may be expecting too much. Many long-time couples may have already held wedding or other commitment ceremonies, she said, and may not plan another extravagant party.

Still, inquiries from New York to her site are nearly triple the level from last summer.
Bentley Meeker, who runs a lighting and staging company, has also seen an uptick in business since the law passed.

"You have this demand that has been latent for a long time," he said. "There's a lot of pent-up desire to get married in this town." -- http://www.nydailynews.com/

Presidential Development and Strategic Planning Secretary Ricky Carandang confirmed Sunday that the President already finalized his speech.

"It's done. The President saw six drafts before it was finalized, but we actually had about eight or nine drafts," said Carandang, one of the president's speech writers.

"The President will talk about transforming society," he added.

Not everyone is willing to just sit back and listen.

The party-list group Akbayan, for one, will hold a march rally outside the Sto. Rosario Church in Cebu City, while other groups led by the Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC) will hold "The People's Sona" at the Tabunok Sports Complex in Talisay City.

According to FDC's press statement, "The People's Sona" will highlight the lack of a human rights agenda, the absence of an environmental advocacy as indicated by Aquino's endorsement of mining and coal-fired power plants, and his administration's failure to address poverty, joblessness and rising cost of commodities, among other issues.

"Usa na katuig ang nakalabay human mi asumir sa Aquino isip president sa nasud. Maayong edukasyon ug trabaho ang iyang saad sa mga kabataan apan wala pa kini matuman hangtud karon (It has been a year since Aquino assumed the presidency, promising good education and jobs for the youth. These have not been delivered until now)," said Mikay Dumabok, spokesperson of Akbayan Youth.

Dumabok said that Akbayan rates Aquino 5 out of 10 in his first year as president.

President Benigno S. Aquino III's State Of The Nation Address
(Manila Bulletin editorial)
July 25, 2011, 12:21am

MANILA, Philippines â€" President Benigno S. Aquino III, the 15th President of the Philippines, is delivering today, July 25, 2011, his second State of the Nation Address (SoNA) before a joint session of the Congress of the Philippines.

It is traditionally during the SoNA, delivered every fourth Monday of July that the Philippine President presents to the nation his program of action for the new fiscal year, as well as reports on gains in the past year.

President Aquino is expected to report on progress on the agenda of reforms he spelled out during his first SoNA on July 26, 2010, particularly in the education, health, and agriculture sectors.

He will report on the passage of significant laws: synchronizing the August 8, 2011, elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with the 2013 mid-term polls, signing of the Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations (GOCC) Governance Act of 2011, continuing the Conditional Cash Transfer program for poor Filipino families, providing for the mandatory immunization of infants and children, amending the Electric Power Industry Reform Act, adopting a pocket open skies policy, and allowing the employment of night workers.

He will also report on his core program of Public-Private Partnership and how it enlivens economic activities in the countryside; and the recently launched Pilipinas Natin Program for volunteerism and partnership between the government and the Filipino people.

He will enumerate the benefits to the country of his seven foreign travels since he assumed the Presidency on June 30, 2010; he visited the United States, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Brunei.

He will also report on job creation, especially in rural areas; rice self-sufficiency, modernization of the Armed Forces; reforms for the police and military, including the provision of housing and other benefits; more assistance and protection for overseas Filipino workers; help for the elderly and physically challenged.

President Aquino said the seeds of change have been planted. Still, much has to be done in the fight against hunger, poverty, and lack of opportunity. To help in reaping the fruits of development and attain the President’s vision and commitment for the country and people, every Filipino should be a catalyst for change and contribute his share to the crucial task of nation-building.

We wish President Benigno S. Aquino III and his Cabinet all the best and success in all their endeavors. Mabuhay!

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) â€" An unsteady forklift dropped a container full of fine Australian wine worth more than $1 million, smashing most of the bottles. The winemaker says he's "gut-wrenched, shocked and numb" after the loss of his flagship shiraz.

Sparky Marquis of Mollydooker Wines lost a third of his Velvet Glove Shiraz production after the accident that destroyed all but one of the 462 cases bound for the United States. Each bottle of the Mollydooker wine sells for $200.

Marquis said Friday that when workers opened up the dropped container, "it was like a murder scene. There was red everywhere."

He said the wine was fully insured.

The accident has crippled Mollydooker's U.S. launch in September. It will also impact the wine market in Australia. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

The sandy shores of Boracay Island in Aklan have once again been recognized internationally, this time when Travel + Leisure Magazine ranked it as the fourth best island in the world in its annual “World’s Best Awards."

In Asia, Boracay is ranked second only to Bali in Indonesia.

It was the first time that Boracay was recognized by the magazine.

The survey was conducted from December 2010 to March 2011. Readers voted and decided through Travel + Leisure magazine and the TravelandLeisure.com, the magazine’s official website.

The top choices are featured in the magazine's August issue.

Islands were evaluated according to their natural attractions, activities, sights, restaurants and food, visitors and natives, and their value for money, according to the website.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

DAVAO CITY -- A 12â€"year-old girl from this city has become the youngest person to become infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through sexual intercourse, a city health official said.

Dr. Josephine Villafuerte, City Health Office (CHO) chief, said the girl is the youngest since the city started monitoring HIV cases in 1993.

"Naay mga bata na karon na naga-engage na sa sex at a very young age (There are children now who engage in sex at a very young age)," Villafuerte said.

She said 22 new cases of persons living with HIV, 21 of them are males, have been recorded between January and March this year. The new cases have brought the number of persons living with HIV in the city to 140.

Villafuerte said 39 new cases have been recorded in the city in the whole of 2010.

Although the figure shows that HIV is prevalent among men, Villafuerte said it is not yet conclusive that the highest incidence in the city is indeed men having sex with men.

HIV is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids). Aids is the late stage of the chronic disease, which is caused by HIV infection.

"Even if they are positive with HIV, there is still hope. There are free medicines we can provide for them," Villafuerte said.
Villafuerte said HIV must not be associated with death since there are advancements, which can now prolong the lives of persons living with HIV.

Less than 20 people have died of HIV infection in the Davao City since 1993, she said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)

Make RH bill a priority

For their part, women members of the Partido ng Manggagawa (PM) called on President Aquino to include the RH bill in his priority legislations for Monday's Sona.

"You have made sporadic statements of support to the RH bill. It has been confusing though because you did not include it in your first Sona priority list of legislations," PM secretary-general Judy Ann Miranda said.

While the RH bill is not the "be all, end all" solution to poverty, Akbayan lawmaker Walden Bello said it provides an option for families to make prudent and smart economic decisions.

Bello said that in hindsight an increase in population could be a great contributor to development.

However, he countered that an unrestrained population growth can spell trouble for development especially when such growth occurs alongside an economy that is unable to accommodate or maximize a rapidly growing population.

The Philippines is expected to end the year with 95 million people as the government eyed economic growth of at least seven percent until 2016 to cut poverty levels.

Poor Filipinos reached 23.1 million in 2009 from 22.2 million in 2006, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex) -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/

Bishops launch attacks anew vs RH bill
Saturday, July 23, 2011

ROMAN Catholic bishops went on another offensive on Saturday as they warned that Philippine society will further decay once the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill is passed into law.

The bill's passage will only result in society losing its moral values, outgoing Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Bishop Nereo Odchimar said in a statement he made in time for the 43rd anniversary of the Humane Vitae letter of Pope Paul VI on July 25.

The anniversary falls on President Benigno Aquino III's second State of the Nation Address (Sona) before members of Congress and the public.

"At the heart of the RH bill or Responsible Parenthood bill is this secularist and materialistic spirit. The bill ignores moral and religious considerations in the name of democracy and freedom of choice in a pluralist society," he said.

Both houses of Congress are currently debating the merits of the RH bill, which was backed by President Aquino and militant organizations.

The late pope's encyclical re-affirmed the traditional teaching of the Catholic Church regarding married love, responsible parenthood, and the prohibition of using artificial contraceptives.

Facts and Trivia / Re: Dog Talk: The Irish Setter
July 24, 2011, 02:14:42 PM

Irish Setters are also widely used as therapy dogs in schools and hospitals. Therapy dogs are permitted in hospitals that allow service dogs and can visit patients on the assigned floors. Recently Irish Setters have been used in the READ Programs. This is a venue where the therapy dogs are permitted in schools and then asked to sit with children as the students read to the Irish Setter. This process helps to enable the student the ability to read without being corrected or judged. Generally the Irish Setter will lie on the floor with the student as the student continues to read, in this calming and relaxed setting. Irish Setters are people dogs that do require to be with their humans. --Wiki

Though they are usually alert to their surroundings, Irish Setters are not well-suited as guard dogs, as they are not a naturally aggressive breed. --Wiki

Irish Setters enjoy having a job to do. Lack of activity will lead to a bored, destructive, or even hyperactive dog. This is not a breed that can be left alone in the backyard for long periods of time, nor should they be. Irish Setters thrive on constant human companionship. Irish Setters respond swiftly to positive training and are highly intelligent. --Wiki
