Besides ... kung talagang magaling siya ... hahahaha galingan na lang niya ang pag prepare ng kanyang mga post!  para mag reflect kuno ng kahit katiting na journalistic acumen?

I know, ill stop. Pero, i just speak for you ladies. No one in here deserves that much disrespect.

She deserves that tho, from what she said about Filipina women. And she's the exact opposite--a white woman who goes to the Philippines and beats her chest here and there. Sorry sweetheart, but not all Filipinas are what she says they are.

Btw, last i hear, Russian women are being sold as sex slaves and going abroad to marry foreign men as well. Same for vietnamese, thai, ukrainian, etc.

Filipinas are just down right beautiful. Of course white women will be jealous---they're taking their white men.

LOL.

I cant help it that our women are beautiful.

Its been 4 weeks since i started my weight training work out, and so far, ive lossed about 15 pounds and gained alot of muscle in the process. Upper body pecs, deltoids, biceps, triceps, trapezius area have firmed a bit. Im jogging 45 minutes a day, then do a 30 minute body building work out. This is just the first month. Mo plan ko to stay in this regimen for another 4-5 months...and want to get a muscle firm body.

Anyone going through the same scheme as well? Any body builders in here? Lets talk about reps and  sets, or any problems you are going through.

So far this is me:

Plano nako dong, kung mag tigols nako, basin mo balikbayan kos atoa, mag teach part-time, then part-time sun worshipper in Panglao, chugging gallons of pina coladas. Hahaha.

Pero wala man nako nahuman tong masters, unya karon you definitely need a grad/post-grad under your belt para maka teach. So, I'm planning to enroll in a PharmD program next year puhon maluoy ang ginoo, pero wala man nag offer ug special PharmD program for RPhs ang school dire, the closest one is Univ of Florida, which means ma associate ko sa Gators, the Dawgs worst enemy! wuhuhuhu!  :'(

Ikaw dong, what kind of doctor are you planning to be?

------------------------------------------------------
Miss Belle, average ra jud ko, honestly. Igo ra gud maka 1 + 1 = 11...hahaha! Si dodong Bran maoy brilliant gud. I believe he is going to be one of the most gifted doctors sa iyang generation. Excited ko para niya. Our dodong will make his mark, and you and I hopefully will still be around to witness that.

Ate, I think its a great idea that you'll enroll for the Pharm.D program, at least that way you can get administrative positions diba? As well, you can teach and boss people around, hahahaha. But seriously, I think you would be good in organization and running things, you already have experience in teaching and your humility in your work is signatory of your high caliber. Mo respect jud ko nimo, te' kai smart ka, pero dili man jud ka mo show. My dad coined the phrase "silent but deadly" (of course he was referring to mom), but in this case it applies to you. hahahahahahah!! :P

I'm going to attend allopathic medical school in August of 2008, ate. Right now, I'm debating in accepting the regular 4 year M.D track or if I should accept USESOM's 6 year M.D/PhD track. Either way, ill make a decision. My mom wants me to go for the regular 4 year M.D track so i can begin residency earlier, but I'm leaning towards accepting USESOM's M.D/PhD program, though I'll be 28 turning 29 when i graduate. One reason why i plan to proceed with that is that it will guarantee me landing a high profile residency and i want to work in the administrative field someday. I want to run hospitals etc. I'd like to specialize in Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology or Emergency Medicine.

Have you ever felt outnumbered? Like there are just not that many people like you around? We've all felt outnumbered in one situation or another and walking into a situation in which you sense the possibility of being ostracized or isolated can be quite threatening.

One group that may experience this kind of threat is women who participate in math, science, and engineering (MSE) settings- settings in which the gender ratio is approximately 3 men to every 1 woman. Recently, in the wake of comments made by former Harvard University President, Larry Summers, suggesting that women may not possess the same "innate ability" or "natural ability" in these fields as do men, several leading scientific institutions and university presidents publicly lamented the underrepresentation of women in Math, Science and Engineering fields and put out a call to study the reasons for the numbers gap in these areas.

While previous research offers biological and socialization explanations for differences in the performance and representation of men and women in these fields, Stanford psychologists, Mary Murphy and Claude Steele argue that the organization of Math, Science and Engineering environments themselves plays a significant role in contributing to this gap. Murphy contends that situational cues (i.e. being outnumbered) may contribute to a decrease in women's performance expectations, as well as their actual performance.

Murphy and colleagues showed a group of advanced MSE undergraduates a gender balanced or unbalanced video depicting a potential MSE summer leadership conference. To assess identity threat, the researchers measured the participant's physiological arousal during the video, cognitive vigilance, sense of belonging and desire to participate in the conference.

The results are telling. The women who watched the gender unbalanced video- where women were outnumbered by men in a 3 to 1 ratio- experienced faster heart rates, higher skin conductance (sweating), and reported a lower sense of belonging and less desire to participate in the conference.

They also found that women were more vigilant to their physical environment when they watched the video in which women were outnumbered. Throughout the testing room, Murphy planted cues related to Math, Science, and Engineering such as magazines like Science, Scientific American, and Nature on the coffee table and a portrait of Einstein and the periodic table on the walls. Women were able to recall more details about the video and the test room, indicating that they paid more attention to the identity-relevant items in order to assess the likelihood of encountering identity threat. "It would not be surprising if the general cognitive functioning of women in the threatening setting was inhibited because of this allocation of attention toward MSE-related cues," write the authors. Thus, it is likely that this kind of attention allocation would interfere with performance and might help explain the performance gap between men and women in these fields.

While men, in either condition, showed no significant difference in physiological arousal, cognitive vigilance, or sense of belonging, both men and women expressed more desire to attend the conference when the ratio of men to women was balanced. Murphy says that while it's interesting that both men and women want to be where the women are, the motivations of men and women for wanting to be there are probably quite different. "Women probably feel more identity-safe in the environment where there are more women- they feel that they really could belong there- while men might simply be attracted by the unusual number of women in these settings. Men just aren't used to seeing that many women in these settings, because the numbers in real Math, Science, and Engineering settings are so unbalanced."

These findings, which appear in the October issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, demonstrates that rather than being endemic to women the experience of identity threat in MSE settings is attributable the situation.

This research underlies the importance of situational cues and Murphy hopes that it will "inspire greater motivation to attend to such cues when creating and modifying environments so that they may foster perceptions of identity safety rather than threat."

The benefits of individually tailored herbal medicine treatments have so far remained unproven and might be outweighed by the potential health risks suggests an article in Postgraduate Medical Journal. A review of the current laws concerning the regulation of tailored herbal medicinal treatments is currently underway in the United Kingdom.

The authors explain that the promotion of the effectiveness of herbal medications has been growing steadily over the last two decades. However, the bulk of medical research has focused on standard preparations, or single herbal extracts, and not individually tailored treatments used by herbal medicine practitioners.

This fact, say the authors, suggests that practitioners have been sponsored by manufacturers, eager to exploit a growing market of OTC (over the counter) remedies.

The writers analyzed available randomized controlled trials on individually tailored herbal medicine treatments. They searched through published articles and research databases. They also contacted experts in the field and associated professional organizations.

Out of all the studies they looked at, 1,300 in total, only three were randomized controlled trials of sufficient quality to be of any use. These three studies focused on the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), and the alleviation of side-effects brought about by cancer drug treatment.

As far as the knee osteoarthritis study or the cancer treatment study were concerned, there were no statistical differences between placebo use and tailored herbal medicine use, say the authors. Although tailored herbal medicine treatments seemed better than placebos for the treatment of IBS, they were not as effective as standard preparations.

The authors conclude that the evidence available to prove that individualized herbal medicine is effective for any indication is zero. They add that the risk of herbs reacting badly with prescription medications or other herbs is unknown.

There is a danger that the public class all herbal medicines equally, Professor Edzard Ernst, the Peninsula Medical School at the University of Exeter, UK, writes in an accompanying editorial. Phytotherapy is being confused with traditional herbal medicine and OTC remedies, which to date have no basis in science, he adds. Phytotherapy, which represents the scientific face of herbalism, has considerable potential to benefit patients.

Professor Ernst concludes "Without these distinctions, we will fail to advance our knowledge of the potential benefits of herbal treatments. More importantly, we will also fail in our foremost duty - to protect the public from treatments that cause them harm."

Your body's own stem cells could trigger alterations in cancer cells which facilitate their spreading around the body, say scientist from the Whitehead Institute, USA. They found that human breast cancer in mice have a higher chance of spreading if they are blended with bone marrow stem cells. Fortunately, say the scientists, it is perhaps feasible to reverse the process, undermining the deadliness of the cancer.

You can read about this study in the journal Nature.

When metastasis occurs it is much harder to treat the cancer. Metastasis is when the cancer invades other parts of the body and forms new tumors. In this study, the scientists intended to find out whether it was possible to stop this from happening - they wanted to find a means of isolating the cancer to one part of the body; stopping it from metastasizing (spreading, invading other parts).

The researchers have found an association with a specific type of stem cell, which encourages the breast cancer cells to spread to other parts of the body. They are found in the bone marrow, and are called Mesenchymal stem cells. These stem cells generally turn into cartilage, bone fat and muscle.

Previous studies had indicated that these stem cells generally migrated in huge numbers to where tumors were situated, meaning they were probably involved in the spread of the cancer. The researchers mixed these stem cells with human breast cancer cells in mice and found they spread to the lungs at seven times their normal rate.

The scientists believe the stem cells alter the cancer cells so that they metastasize. However, they add that as soon as they had spread, those cancer cells returned to their original genetic make-up. The bad news here is that as they revert back to their original genetic make up they are hard to identify, the good news, say the researchers, is that it is most likely they can find a way of blocking the whole process.

A new US study has shown that flu vaccination is effective at cutting rates of hospitalization and death among community dwelling elderly people.

The study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and is the work of Dr Kristin L Nichol, chief of medicine at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and colleagues.

Although yearly flu shots are recommended in the US for older people, the take up rate falls far short of the nation's target of 90 per cent; only about 60 per cent of elderly Americans have their annual flu shot.

This is the first long term multicentre study to examine the effectiveness of flu shots across a range of elderly people in geographically diverse regions. Previous studies have been short term (over one or two seasons) and at single sites.

Nichol and colleagues analysed vaccination status data totalling 713,872 person-seasons on 18 cohorts of people aged 65 and over from three HMOs (health maintenance organizations).

One HMO data set covered Minnesota/Wisconsin for 1990-1991 through 1999-2000, another covered New York for 1996-1997 through 1999-2000, and the third covered Oregon/Washington for 1996-1997 through 1999-2000.

The results showed that:
There was a 27 per cent reduction in rates of hospitalization among those people who had a flu vaccination compared to those who did not.
The effect of having a vaccination also reduced the rate of death from any cause by 48 per cent.
The figures were generally stable across age groups and risk categories.
And they were still significant, although at a lower level, when the researchers took into account factors that could have caused the figures to be inflated, such as the fact healthier elderly people are more likely to be vaccinated than sick, weaker elderly people.
The researchers concluded that:

"During 10 seasons, influenza vaccination was associated with significant reductions in the risk of hospitalization for pneumonia or influenza and in the risk of death among community-dwelling elderly persons. Vaccine delivery to this high-priority group should be improved."

Commenting in Journal Watch Infectious Diseases, Dr Neil R Blacklow said that this study:

"Counters concerns that previous findings of vaccine effectiveness might have been influenced by characteristics unique to a single influenza season or a localized study population."

However, he points out, as does Dr John D Treanor in an editorial published in the same NEJM issue as the study, that current vaccines are probably less protective against the flu in the elderly than in younger adults and that more protective vaccines are needed to treat older people.

But he also said that having enhanced vaccination programmes targeted at children could reduce the spread of flu and thereby give secondary protection to the elderly. This is what happened with pneumococcal vaccines.

Nichol told WebMD that the study does not claim that the flu vaccine is perfect, or that the search for better alternatives should stop:

"What it does say is right now, even as we are exploring other options, current vaccines have something very important to offer older adults," said Nichol.

Yes dodong, they say that people who are blessed with extraordinary intelligence don't make good teachers. What is a basic question for you, may not be so basic for everyone else. So, you get frustrated.  :)

I really liked teaching. I had the patience, I think. It felt good to be surrounded by so many young people, eager and hungry for knowledge. You feel young as well, you'll never get into a rut mentally because you're learning new things everyday.

I taught the basic pharmacy courses for freshmen and sophomores. I was a student as well, working towards my Masters. What sealed the deal for me was the 75% tuition fee discount for the teachers. And also, since the Dean was a consultant at UniLab, kaming tanan sa faculty, kanunay ma invite sa mga parties and shows, events sponsored by UniLab. Mao jud to akong favorite, free food!

That was a fun time in my life.

;D

PS. Maglagot pud ko anang mga cheaters, dong. Hate jud na nako.

So you now you work in the private field, ate? Do you see yourself going back into academia and teaching pharmacy students again?

You are very lucky, Ate, to be blessed with such a virtue. And I think you were definately a great pharmacy instructor when you taught it.

unsa mana bad or good?

Well there are negative medical implications with excessively light iris color. Medical research by Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University have already found out that those with lighter iris scheme have a substantially higher age-related macular degeneration than those with darker iris schemes. People with lighter iris schemes are susceptible to uveal damage, and those with heterochromia are primarily at risk because their lighter eye color have substantial amounts of inactive melanocytes, which places them in greater risk of ARMD than those with naturally light iris schemes on two eyes.

The phenotypic effects of an individual's eyes are phylogenetic on that basis, eye color is determined by the three loci EYCL1, EYCL2, and EYCL3. Any combination of this results in brown, green, blue, and or admixtures of the color scheme. Unfortunately, there are genetic anomolies which manifests in different iris color, due to an unstable melanin base within the iris or inactive melanocytes. The condtion is called heterocrhomia. Its caused by genetic disease such as chimerism and waardenburg syndrome.

Do what you think is right, dodong.

Follow your heart.

I was a teacher for about a year, a long time ago. I was not a good one, I think. I was too nice. I always gave students make-up tests, remedial tests etc etc...

Maayo ka dong kay medyo strict man ka.

;D

Ate, did you have alot of patience for your students? I think thats one of my flaws, kai i cannot take it when students ask very basic questions redundantly. I get annoyed after the fact that I explain a reaction or the nature of a deutering agent, and still they can't absorb the information. I realize that by this, i cannot work as a professor or as a teacher as a living. I am not endowed with the virtue of patience.

You were a teacher diay, ate? Did you teach high school or elementary? As for me, I try to operate on the college's honor code, and ive already (from grading previous quizzes) come into contact of students copying each other. I mean, the answers on one quizz were identical, same wording etc. I had to talk to the students about this--and they did admit to it. I failed them outright, and reported them to the college's academic judicial committee. I have little to no pity for those who cheat and collaborate on things, when they were explicitly told by the professor and myself that it was an individual task. Also, on the quizzes, there is a signature clause, where students have to sign and abide by the honor code. The fact that these individuals cheated after I told them not to, was a slap to the face on me. Not only did i have to get a lecture from the professor (who blamed me for the incident, btw, apparently i was too 'lenient')..and this is the same professor who made me do research work despite not telling us that his research grant was revoked!!

But yea, I tried being lenient to students before, and they abuse that relationship. And one thing that i really hate is when the girls try to flirt with me during lab. lol, they think that by flirting with me that ill grade them with leniency. Sad for them, but i grade everyone according to their work and their answer.

Im done grading right now. Out of 37 students: 8 scored over a 90 percentile, 8 scored on the B percentile, 14 had C/C- and 7 failed.

hahaha if only my mommy and dad were so lenient as you, 'te. LOL.
Ah..sus marihosep, i remember one time when my mom found out that i took the girl to the prom without her knowing it, she ignored me for like almost a week. And i couldnt bear it, id rather have been latuss with a belt by my father than be ignored by my own mom. And you're right, 'te. I was very rebellious as a child, i wanted to be totally against what my dad stood for because dad was very hard line on everything man gud. So strict ra kaayo. Pero now, when i look back at things, i appreciate his stance on things and my mom's stance on things. Now im trying to emulate my dad. Crazy no?

I guess its one of those phases teenager boys go through with in life.

Ikaw te'? where you rebellious or where you always obeiscant to your parents?

Question and Answer / Re: High School Life
October 05, 2007, 11:34:11 AM
Oh reading this thread just reminded me of my crazy days in high school, lol.
It was during junior prom 2003, when I was being very secretive towards my parents. I took a girl to the prom, who my parents didnt know, and I ran out of the house to her car--and took her to one of my friend's house (where we were all meeting up for). However, bu**** man gud ko--i under-estimated my mom and dad. They actually followed me and my date to the house of my friend--and ran the door bell. My mom was so angry at me--because i didnt introduce my date to her--and because i was acting immature about the prom; hiding things etc. Ah..it was so embarassing for me. I got so much in trouble that time. It didnt help that the girl that i took to the prom was the same girl that i drove to philadelphia and atlantic city and stayed in a hotel with for a day. My parents thought that i ran away....lol. Ah god, i did so many crazy things in high school. I look back at it and laugh how immature i acted, the thrill of excitement that i lusted for (at the time, i thought i was in LOVE with the girl, hahaha). Now that i look back at it, i cant help but smile and laugh how immature and un-guided my feelings were. I didnt know what 'love' was, haha. It was just an example of 'puppy love'. :P

I do appreciate how much my parents went through with me.

Oh yea, one thing that i fondly remember about high school was how me and my friends used to drag race on dirt roads in the country side. Hahahaha. We were so immature. I remember we drag raced naked, hahaha. I think i was like..17 y/o or 18 y/o when we did that.

Talk of the Town / Re: Republic of Bohol Can Be Created
October 05, 2007, 01:45:46 AM
For me, it is impossible to secede from the Republic of the Philippines. As members of the global community and under the threat of economic, cultural and political domination by great powers in our region. So there in lies the necessity to maintain and uphold the national sovereignty of the Republic of the Philippines. Great powers of the region look to test the resolve of our republic, and time and time again have we stepped up to the challenge, despite our shortcomings. In one particular example is the naval-oceanographic status of the country. Since the 1980s, there has been massive illegal entry into the naval waters of the Philippines by nations such as the People's Republic of China and the Federated States of Malaysia. These nation states have also been caught red handed in providing safety for illegal fisherman who come to the oceanic territories of the Philippines in the Kalayaaan group (western Philippines) and in Philipppine-administered Tawi-Tawi group.

And did the Philippines give in to such actions. No, on the contrary, despite risking open clashes with the militaries of the PRC and Malaysia, the Philippine Navy has brutally pursued a policy of 'shoot then ask' against illegal aliens in the sea. Thousands of Chinese fishing boats who were caught by our overstretched Philippine navy were either sunk or confiscated and jailing Chinese fisherman according to laws of the Republic and in accordance to the United Nations Treatise of the Sea: thereby sollidifying Philippine legitimacy in its actions. In the early 1990s, a Philippine naval group was sent to the Spratleys where it engaged a Chinese naval patrol group, which was deep in Philippine territory. Though the Philippines knew of its military weakness against the Chinese, the military engaged the enemy--capturing a Chinese missile patrol boat and heavily damaging other ships, which eventually steamed back to PRC-administered Spratley Islands.

Clearly, this is an example of how a dog stood its ground against an elephant. The tenacity of the Filipino when it comes to warefare and our people's dogged will determination is not something to delineate, as the Spanish, Americans and Japanese learned all too well.

We as a people need to focus on national growth, growth of patriotism and love of Las Islas Filipinas. Keep the words and passions of our forefathers who so passionately fought for our independence and national solidarity at hand. Never give up and talk of secession, for to do so would undermine the very integrity of the Republic of the Philippines. This is why we have groups who call for a 'bangsamoro' etc. Such thinking can only lead to civil war and will undermine the leaps and strides that our people achieved since independence. National solidarity, must be mandated. The United States itself went through a bloody ordeal, the American Civil War, which lead to the deaths of over 627,000 Americans and the fragmentation of the economy as a result of the war. Let us not repeat the mistakes of the past, and march toward a prosperous future. Boho's future. The Philippine's future.

Mike, talking about this is bad. I know that when I was talking with a friend of mine about this--my Waray-Waray blood came out...which rarely comes out (last time was when i played football, and i ended up hurting other players badly). Ang moral of the story here is: restraint. We need to restrain ourselves form doing STUPID things (and this is directed tot he person who is responsible for all this drama--and i KNOW you are reading this).

He's only lucky this didnt happen during pre-colonial times. Or else...

My only question, which resounds in my head, is why would that individual delete posts that clearly weren't his to begin with? What was his intent? His reasons for doing that?

I know that prior to destroying members' posts, he PMed me and posted on the forum that he was leaving Tubag Bohol. There in lie lies the question of ethos, ethics and morality. When does one individual's opinions and objections supersedes the rights and necessities of the whole group? As I said before in that thread entitled "Are Politicians Prostitutes", the innate humanistic trait of greed, need to dominate, is universal. And lo and behold, it was manifested by the very person who argued against it. Total hypocrisy.

In accordance to the thread and what was previously mentioned by Mr. Ben and Mr. Ferniz, rules need to be followed.
