One-legged goalie winner in game of life

By Marc Anthony Reyes
Inquirer
First Posted 09:03am (Mla time) 02/21/2007

Filed Under: Good news, Soccer, Diseases

MANILA, Philippines -- A lot of times on the pitch, when Joseph del Gallego is faced with a rushing striker, he knows exactly what’s on his opponent’s mind.

“Some of them are very eager to score against me,” Del Gallego told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “And some of them plan very well by making me go outside the goal.”

As harsh as the reason may be, it’s easy to understand why opponents think they can have their way with Del Gallego:

The 28-year-old call center manager, who tends the goal for PeopleSupport Team A in Cebu City, plays with just one leg. He lost his left leg to bone cancer 11 years ago.

But he doesn’t complain every time opponents try to take advantage of him during games.

“They don’t treat me as anybody different,” said Del Gallego. He savors the thought that nobody looks down on him whether he is guarding goals in pick-up soccer games on the street or in serious tournament matches on the playing field.

Of course, it’s not easy.

“What is difficult is catching ground balls,” he said. “That’s when I really dive for the ball and then up again.”

A grim verdict

Still, things had never been easy since he was diagnosed with bone cancer in his left leg when he was 17. At that time, diving for ground balls was the least of his worries.

Del Gallego, along with his parents, hopped from one hospital to another, hoping to get a more optimistic medical opinion. But no matter where they went, the verdict was the same: The leg had to go.

For someone who was into football and swimming seriously, playing in such tournaments as the Palarong Pambansa and the Go-for-Goal soccer program, losing a leg could have resulted in fits of depression.

“Fortunately, God gave me an open mind,” Del Gallego said. “That made me a little more mature than I should have been at that age.”

‘God made me a goalie’

“I also found strength in people around me, my grandparents, my mom (Ma. Rowena), my wife Lourie Lei and kids, Joseph Andre and Owen Louis, and my aunt, Gigi Libby,” said the 5-foot-10 goalie.

That support, plus the fact that he was skilled enough to continue playing his favorite sport despite his condition, made life easier.

“Fortunately for me, I’ve always been a goalie,” he said. “Maybe God had plans back then. He made me a goalie so I just have to jump around and catch the ball, not run around and kick the ball.”

Grandparents’ gift

He actually has a prosthetic leg, a gift from grandparents Cesar and Emma Vincoy. But he doesn’t use it during games.

“I may not be able to buy a new one,” he joked.

So he is left with his talent, and a little edge over others that his physical handicap gives him: Del Gallego admits that somehow, the sight of a one-legged goalie distracts opponents, allowing him to foil shots at the net better.

Next generation

His feat has spawned a new generation of soccer players in his family. His sons, aged 6 and 2, have taken up the sport, joining him in pick-up games on Saturday mornings.

“I don’t force them but they have shown interest in playing football,” he said.

Despite being a call center team, PeopleSupport gets to play in tournaments with serious competition. In fact, the team plays top collegiate and commercial squads in Cebu.

A different kind of game

PeopleSupport also sees action in futsal and 7-a-side football tournaments, which suit Del Gallego better because he has a smaller goal to defend.

In the game of football, defeats come with victories.

In the game of life, Del Gallego has proven himself a winner.

My fish were even amazed at me! LOL (you can see one of them looking at the mini bibingka.)

i renewed my driver's license last year for another three-year term and for a change decided to go to the new LTO licensing office located at SM davao to get it done. for a government office, it is strange (albeit in a pleasant way) that they close at 6:30 PM. it thus allows people who observe an 8 to 5 office schedule to swing by after work and get their driver's license renewed or whatever. but i'm getting ahead of my story.

having experienced how a very minor transaction with LTO can take the whole day, i came early to give me enough time to complete my transaction. guess who long it took to get my driver's license renewed? starting from the time when i had to take the mandatory drug testing by providing urine sample and getting a physical examination which included taking my BP and up to the time when i had to sign their logbook to indicated that they have released my license in a plastic card, it took only 20 minutes! repeat, 20 minutes. and i had my new driver's license in a plastic card. it was pretty unbelievable that despite my being a really, really hard-to-please guy, i ended up giving the front desk people a thumbs-up sign. i even told them that i was very impressed.

the downside though is that this kind of service may be available only in selected areas in bigger cities.

bolingitboy, this is really amazing!  there is hope afterall!  maybe we should encourage them some more by sending a thank you note or something.  dire bitaw sa among local hospital, naay notes gi post sa bulletin board from patients who appreciated their services.

Wait. Are they really nuns?

Bem, yes they are nuns and yes, they are living in that apartment where the Pinoy couple Lims are living.  And in fact, the nuns are the lessors.  There is nothing wrong with that in this country. Our nuns here in Sacramento (mostly Pinoys) have acres and acres of property donated to them.  My take is that maybe the Lims are defiant to the apartment rules and I don't think that is nice also.  If they say that's being racist, I would say don't think so.  We just have to learn to respect other people's culture but it doesn't mean that we have to insist ours like in this case force other people to take the smell that we so love to smell where other thinks it's foul smelling.  Bisan didto pa ko sa Manila, I was living in a condominium and though I craved for buwad sometimes, di jud ko magluto kay lain-lain mang tao gapujo sa apartment.  Dihay Japanese, dihay itom, puti, NBA San Miguel players, etc.  Just imagine if you are living next door to Asian Indian people unja mag sige sila'g luto ug curried food.  Sus, mopilit tawon na sa baho sa atong sanina oi.  Labaw na ang baho sa buwad especially dire na halos carpeted ang floors.

One time dihay gi news dire na ang usa ka Muslim woman nag adto sa Department of Mother Vehicle unya 'kodakan' (just wanna use this word hehehe) sya for the driver's license.  She insisted and sued that it was racial discrimination for the Department of Motor Vehicle to tell her to take her thing that Muslim women use to cover her face kay lagi daw mao nay ilang practice. I just have to shake my head.  Unsaon lugar pagkakuha ug driver's license kon wa kay ID picture? hehehe  So pareho ra gihapon na sa atong pagluto ug buwad dire.  Dili man gud na wa na jud lain option especially sa NY to eat buwad.  Naay Pinoy stores that cook buwad uny paliton na lang nimo and you can eat at home.  It's not gonna be that smelly unya di ka makatugaw sa other occupants sa apartment.

Usa pa, when we enter the United States, naay mga Pinoy food na gibawal sa customs.  We don't tell them that's being racist of them not to allow us to take our own food in their country.

And the 75k lawsuit price was nothing here kay dire when people file case and some are ridiculous cases at that mag involve ug millions and millions of dollars. Siguro because the nuns didn't really want to go that far.

Mao lang na akong makasulti aning bahina.

Lt. Governor Garamendi, Chief Justice George, President pro Tem Steinberg, Speaker Bass, Senate Republican Leader Cogdill, Assembly Republican Leader Villines, Members of the legislature, ladies and gentlemen, we meet in times of great hope for our nation.

Although we hear the drumbeat of news about bailouts, bankruptcies and Ponzi schemes, the nation with great anticipation is also awaiting the inauguration of a new president.

Our nation should be proud of what President-elect Obama's election says to the world about American openness and renewal.

President Reagan used to tell about the letter he got from a man who said that you can go to live in Turkey, but you can't become a Turk. You can go to live in Japan, but you cannot become Japanese. And he went through other countries.

"But," the man said, "anyone from any corner of the world can come to America and become an American."

And now, we know that any American child, no matter what corner of the world his father or mother comes from, can even become President of the United States.

What a wonderful national story for us.

This nation rightfully feels the hope of change.

Californians, of course, desire change here in their own state as well.

Yet they have doubts if that is possible.

For months, in the face of a crisis, we have been unable to reach agreement on the largest budget deficit in our history.

We are in our third special session and we've declared a fiscal emergency - and every day that goes by, makes the budget problem that much harder to solve.

As a result of all this, California, the eighth largest economy in the world, faces insolvency within weeks.

The legislature is currently in the midst of serious and good faith negotiations to resolve the crisis, negotiations that are being conducted in the knowledge we have no alternative but to find agreement.

The importance of the negotiation's success goes far beyond the economic and human impact.

People are asking if California is governable.

They wonder about the need for a constitutional convention.

They don't understand how we could have let political dysfunction paralyze our state for so long.

In recent years, they have seen more gridlock in Sacramento than on our roads, if such a thing is possible.

I will not give the traditional State of the State address today, because the reality is that our state is incapacitated until we resolve the budget crisis.

The truth is that California is in a state of emergency.

Addressing this emergency is the first and greatest thing we must do for the people.

The 42 billion dollar deficit is a rock upon our chest and we cannot breathe until we get it off.

It doesn't make any sense to talk about education, infrastructure, water, health care reform and all these things when we have this huge budget deficit.

I will talk about my vision for all of these things... and more... as soon as we get the budget done.

So, no, I did not come today to deliver the normal list of accomplishments and proposals.

I came to encourage this body to continue the hard work you are doing behind closed doors.

There is a context and a history to the negotiations that are underway.

It is not that California is ungovernable. It's that for too long we have been split by ideology.

Conan's sword could not have cleaved our political system in two as cleanly as our own political parties have done.

Over time, ours has become a system where rigid ideology has been rewarded and pragmatic compromise has been punished.

And where has this led?

I think you would agree that in recent years California's legislature has been engaged in civil war.

Meanwhile, the needs of the people became secondary.

Our citizens do not believe that we in government are in touch with their needs.

These needs are not unreasonable.

At the end of the day, most people do not require a great deal from their government.

They expect the fundamentals.

They want to live in safety.

They want a good education for their children.

They want jobs.

They want to breathe clean air.

They want water when they turn on the faucet and electricity when they turn on the switch.

And they want these things delivered efficiently and economically.

One of the reasonable expectations the public has of government is that it will produce a sound and balanced budget.

That is what the legislative leaders are struggling to do right now.

There is no course left open to us but this: to work together, to sacrifice together, to think of the common good - not our individual good.

No one wants to take money from our gang-fighting programs or from Medi-Cal or from education.

No one wants to pay more in taxes or fees.

But each of us has to give up something because our country is in an economic crisis and our state simply doesn't have the money.

In December, we even had to suspend funding that affects 2,000 infrastructure projects that were already underway.

So, now, the bulldozers are silent. The nail guns are still. The cement trucks are parked. This disruption has stopped work on levees, schools, roads, everything.

It has thrown thousands and thousands of people out of work at a time when our unemployment rate is rising.

How could we let something like that happen?

I know that everyone in this room wants to hear again the sound of construction.

No one wants unemployment checks replacing paychecks.

So, I am encouraged that meaningful negotiations are underway. And, as difficult as the budget will be, good things can come out of it.

Because, in spite of the budget crisis, when we have worked together in the past, we have passed measures that moved this state - and even the nation - forward.

When a budget agreement is reached, when some of the raw emotions have passed, I will send to the legislature the package of legislative goals and proposals that a governor traditionally sends.

These proposals are sitting on my desk. Let me tell you, I have big plans.

They include action on the economy, on water, environment, education, health care reform, government efficiency and reform, job creation.

But, our first order of business is to solve the budget crisis.

And I have an idea going forward.

As you know, in the last 20 years of budgeting, only four budgets have been on time.

So, if you don't mind, let me make a little suggestion.

We should make a commitment that legislators - and the governor, too - lose per diem expenses and our paychecks, for every day the budget goes past the constitutional deadline of June 15th.

You have to admit it is a brilliant idea.

I mean, if you call a taxi and the taxi doesn't come, you don't pay the driver.

If the people's work is not getting done, the people's representatives should not get paid either.

That is common sense in the real world.

And I will send you some other reforms, too.

Let me close by saying something about the fires of 2008.

At one point, I got a phone call that we had 875 wildfires burning all at the same time.

I said to myself, how do we deal with this?

The next morning I get a call, "Governor, there are now 2,014 fires burning all at the same time."

The largest number on record.

Imagine, 2,000 fires, a huge challenge and every one of those fires was put out.

You know why? Because we have the best trained, the most selfless, the toughest firefighters in the nation.

Thirteen of whom lost their lives.

They gave their lives for this state.

Ladies and gentlemen, the courageous examples of those firefighters should not be lost on us.

In our own way, we, too, must show courage in serving the public.

Ladies and gentlemen, let this be a year of political courage.

Let us be courageous for the people.

Let us be courageous for the common good of California.

Let us resolve the budget crisis, so that we can get on with the people's work.

Thank you.

January 16, 2009, 09:18:11 AM
Manay, I totally agree with your idea on making a petition to express our disgust to ICM Management for how poorly, for the lack of word, they handled the raffle draw.  But I am just wondering if you think we should hear first the side of ICM as we are only hearing one side of the coin.  I am not doubting renegade on how she reported the incident here but still, I feel it is best to hear the other side.  We can kindly ask Leo aka El Mundo to take the side of ICM or email Bohol Chronicle maybe?  Maybe Mike has a better idea on how to do this.  What do you think, Manay?  However, if you already have validated report that ICM was at fault, then sure we can go ahead. I'd like to go for the email procedure since I do not have a working fax machine here. (hehehe pobre ba oi!) My next question is, if proven that ICM was at fault, how can ICM make it right to the people they caused inconvenience and disappointment?

Thanks a lot, Manay!

What the world needs is a magic wand that only works if it's for the good of humankind.  The one that can detonate bombs.  The one that can censor bad languages that could start a war.  The one that can fix disagreement between nations.  Then one that can make the world a better place to live in.
