TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) â€" Honduras authorities say they have recovered 7.3 tons (6.6 metric tons) of cocaine from a semi-submersible craft seized off the country's Caribbean coast.

Presidential guard chief Col. Rene Osorio says officials had earlier recovered 2.7 tons (2.5 metric tons). They have been unloading the drugs since Wednesday.

The submarine-like fiberglass craft is floating about 15 meters (50 feet) under the surface because the crew tried to sink it.

A U.S. Coast Guard patrol detected the vessel Wednesday off the coast of the sparsely populated province of Gracias a Dios, near the Nicaraguan border. Five crew members were detained.

So far authorities in Honduras have seized 13.8 tons (12.6 metric tons) of cocaine totaling some $500 million. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

One-of-a-kind transparent "Ghost Car" sold at auction
By Mary Wisniewski | Reuters â€" Sat, Jul 30, 2011

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Some car enthusiasts prefer black - some red. But a buyer at a Michigan auction Saturday got a truly one-of-a-kind color -- transparent.

The 1939 Pontiac Deluxe Six "Ghost Car," first displayed at the New York World's Fair and later at the Smithsonian Institution, was sold Saturday for $308,000.

Originally built for $25,000, the car with a Plexiglas body was the first transparent car built in America. Another was built the following year, but its whereabouts are unknown.

"This is the only one known to exist," said Alain Squindo, a car specialist for RM Auctions, which held the auction for the "Ghost Car" and other specialty vehicles in Plymouth, Mich. "It's a very original car."

The Ghost Car was first displayed at the 1939/1940 New York World's Fair, Squindo said. It toured a number of dealerships, and then was at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. for a number of years.

It has been owned by the same family since the 1980s. "They were rather sad to see their beloved car go," Squindo said. He could not disclose the name of the buyer.

The car had less than 100 miles on it, picked up by being driven in and out of dealerships for displays. It was a collaboration between GM and Rohm & Haas chemical company, which made the Plexiglas. Structural metal underneath was given a copper wash and all hardware, including the dashboard was chrome-plated.

Squindo said the top price paid at the auction was for a 1932 Packard convertible sedan once owned by singer Al Jolson, which sold for $1.1 million. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Two French female tourists were shot to death in northern Argentina, where they were found by local hikers, according to authorities.

"They are two Frenchwomen, found shot to death in a touristy area of Salta province," Judge Martin Perez told TN television on Saturday.

The bodies of the women, both 30, were spotted Friday by hikers near San Lorenzo hill, west of the provincial capital, the judge said. The hiking area popular with tourists leads to an observation point offering a panoramic view of the city and surrounding area.

"Salta needs to clear up this appalling crime immediately," Governor Juan Manuel Uturbey said at a press conference at his office.

Uturbey said the victims' identities were known but he did not immediately announce them, though police sources told El Tribuno de Salta newspaper the women were Houria Moumni and Cassandre Bouvier.

The French foreign ministry said it wanted "the crimes solved, and for those who are responsible to be identified and tried."

One was shot in the head and apparently sexually abused, her clothes torn, and the other was shot in the back, the judge said.

No arrests have been made and authorities have launched an investigation.

The women had arrived in Salta on July 11 and planned to stay through July 19, police said. They were last seen at their hotel, where they had left their backpacks, on July 16.

"There is a lapse of several days where there was no sign of what their activities were," said Marcelo Baez, a justice spokesman in Salta.

"Police are trying to put together the pieces. What is clear is that they were brutally murdered." -- http://news.yahoo.com/

People have a hard time seeing extremism in their own religion.

For Christians who think of their faith as preaching peace, how to explain the faith-sanctioned killing of the Crusades? For Muslims, what about the thousands of jihadists now following violent interpretations of Islam?

Or consider the Ku Klux Klan's burning crosses. If those were the actions of a misguided minority, shouldn't the same be said of the 19 men who hijacked airliners on 9/11?

Art Markman, a psychology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said research shows that when people are asked to describe someone else's behavior, they focus on personal characteristics â€" who that person is. But when asked to describe their own behavior, people focus on their individual situation.

"If you're a Christian and you see this Norway murderer, you say, I have these teachings and I haven't murdered anyone, so the teachings can't be the problem," Markman said. "But if you're talking about the 'other,' it's different. And if you don't know what the actual Muslim teachings are, it seems like a plausible explanation."

Some Christians say they do know the Muslim teachings, and that they are the problem. "There is a lot of text to justify the link between Islam and terrorism," said Michael Youssef, founder of the Evangelical-Anglican Church of the Apostles in Atlanta. "In the Quaranic text, and in the tradition that was written by the followers."

Many Islamic scholars say violent interpretations are wrong, and Youssef acknowledges that. However, "If your role model is Jesus, then nonviolence will be the way you change things. If your role model is somebody who waged war and killed people, then you say, 'I can do that,'" said Youssef, who was born in Egypt to Christian parents.

But Arsalan Iftikhar, an international human rights lawyer and author of the upcoming book "Islamic Pacifism: Global Muslims in the Post-Osama Era," said the Norway attacks "proved that terrorism can be committed by a person of any race, nationality or religion."

Iftikhar, who is Muslim, said one effect of the tragedy would be "to restart a debate on the term terrorism, and who and when the term should be applied."

"Sadly, the last ten years, the term has been co-opted in public discourse and only applies to Muslims," he said. "Now here we have a right-wing Christian extremist who has committed an act of terror, and many people don't know how to react." -- http://news.yahoo.com/

'Christian terrorist'? Norway case strikes debate
By JESSE WASHINGTON - AP National Writer | AP â€" 3 hrs ago

When the "enemy" is different, an outsider, it's easier to draw quick conclusions, to develop stereotypes. It's simply human nature: There is "us," and there is "them." But what happens when the enemy looks like us â€" from the same tradition and belief system?

That is the conundrum in the case of Norway and Anders Behring Brevik, who is being called a "Christian extremist" or "Christian terrorist."

As westerners wrestle with such characterizations of the Oslo mass murder suspect, the question arises: Nearly a decade after 9/11 created a widespread suspicion of Muslims based on the actions of a fanatical few, is this what it's like to walk a mile in the shoes of stereotype?

"Absolutely," said Mark Kelly Tyler, pastor of Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. "It clearly puts us in a position where we can't simply say that extreme and violent behavior associated with a religious belief is somehow restricted to Muslim extremists."

"It speaks to cultural assumptions, how we are able to understand something when it (comes from) us," Tyler said. "When one of us does something terrible, we know that's not how we all think, yet we can't see that with other people."

Psychologists say stereotypes come from a deeply human impulse to categorize other people, usually into groups of "us" and "them."

"Our brains are wired that way," said Cheryl Dickter, a psychology professor at the College of William & Mary who studies stereotypes and prejudice.

When Dickter examined brain waves, she found that people process information and pictures about their "us" group differently compared with information about "them" groups. People remembered information better when it reinforced their stereotypes of other groups, she said, and when information didn't fit their stereotype, it was often explained or simply forgotten.

"That's how stereotypes get maintained in the face of all this (contradictory) information," Dickter said.

So during the first reports that someone had detonated a car bomb and then opened fire at a youth camp in Norway, many assumptions clicked into place.

"In all likelihood the attack was launched by part of the jihadist hydra," Thomas Joscelyn, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, wrote within hours on the Weekly Standard website.

The massacre was actually committed, police say, by a blond Norwegian whose photo would not seem out of place in an American college directory. As Breivik's 1,500-page manifesto emerged, calling for violence to rid Europe of non-Christians and those he deemed traitors to Christian Europe, some seized on the religious aspect of his delusions.

Mark Juergensmeyer, editor of the book "Global Religions: An Introduction" and a sociology professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, wrote an essay likening Breivik to Timothy McVeigh, the American who killed 168 people in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. It was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil until 9/11.

McVeigh and Breivik were both "good-looking young Caucasians, self-enlisted soldiers in an imagined cosmic war to save Christendom ... and both were Christian terrorists," Juergensmeyer wrote.

In a column for Salon.com, Alex Pareene said Breivik is not an American-style evangelical, but he listed other connections to Christianity. "All of this says 'Christian terrorist,'" Pareene wrote.

Such claims drew strong resistance. "Breivik is not a Christian. That's impossible. No one believing in Jesus commits mass murder," Bill O'Reilly said on his Fox News show.

That makes sense to Joyce Dubensky, CEO of the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding. She said it also makes sense that "millions of Muslims say Osama bin Laden is not a Muslim, that no one who believes in the prophet Muhammad commits mass murder."

"We need to hear Bill O'Reilly, but we also need to hear and understand the voices of the overwhelming Muslim majority around the world who condemn those who are terrorists in the name of their faith," she said.

Scientists study how nervous system translates sensory information into coordinated motor output
Published on July 30, 2011 at 8:14 AM

Escape responses are some of the most studied behaviors by neurobiologists who want to understand how the brain processes sensory information. The ability to evade predators plays a vital role in the process of natural selection. Animals explore their environment to find food, find mates and locate new habitats, and have developed distinct escape responses to avoid predators, thereby increasing their chances for survival. Yet there are few examples that illustrate a complete understanding of the basic biological mechanisms of behavior with its ecological relevance.

New research by scientists at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) published this week in Current Biology offers evidence that for the first time illuminates a biological and ecological path that links genes to molecule to neural circuit to behavior to environment. "We're studying how the nervous system generates behavior and translates sensory information into a coordinated motor output," said Mark Alkema, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology at UMMS and lead author of the study. "For example, when you try to swat a fly, it has to coordinate its leg lift and wing flapping in order to escape being crushed. We believe that the small roundworm C. elegans does something similar in its own escape-response."

A gentle touch to the head of the C. elegans causes the microscopic nematode to cease normal exploratory head movements and quickly reverse direction. This response is one of the rare examples where the complete path from sensory neuron to coordinated motor output is understood by scientists. What wasn't known, however, is why C. elegans would suppress exploratory head movements when touched on the head but not when touched on the nose or tail. While the C. elegans is commonly grown in petri dishes in laboratories, its normal habitat is in the soil. Dr. Alkema and his colleagues at UMMS hypothesized that the nematode adapted this singular behavior in response to predacious fungi found in its natural environment that use constricting rings to trap its prey.

'Phl should be honored for being last bastion vs divorce'
By Evelyn Macairan (The Philippine Star) Updated July 31, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto yesterday said the Philippines should be honored for being the last bastion against divorce.

Archbishop Pinto said the Filipino people should continue to preserve and value their families amidst efforts of some legislators lobbying for a divorce bill.

“I think it is a point of honor for the Philippines and in keeping the family with the traditional according to the doctrine of the Church, of course in the Natural Law,” he said.

The Social Weather Stations (SWS), in a survey conducted last March, reported that 50 percent of adult Filipinos agreed that couples who separate and cannot reconcile should be granted divorce so they could remarry.

The survey also reflected that 33 percent of the 1,200 respondents disagreed and 16 percent remain undecided.

The proposed divorce bill has also gained the support of some legislators like Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

Wikipedia reported that apart from the Vatican, the Philippines is the only country that does not have some form of divorce.

Just recently, the parliament of the predominantly Roman Catholic Republic of Malta approved the Divorce Law.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has been strongly opposing the passage of the Divorce and Reproductive Health bills that they believe would weaken the foundation of Filipino families.

“The bishops are entitled to intervene and they did in fact with their declarations. This is their own,” said the Italian Archbishop.

When asked if the Vatican was pleased with the CBCP’s efforts to combat the proposed Divorce and RH bill, Archbishop Pinto said, “To give judgment is not my task. My task is to corroborate with the bishops.”

During his stay in the country, Pinto would be visiting the dioceses and prepare for the appointment of incoming bishops.

wa diay gugma kon magtinindugay lang sud sa usa ka gabii?
naa baya'y gugma bisan sa unang pagtan-aw lang niini
dili gyud hinuon kini mahisama niadtong gibalikbalikan
nga ang katam-is masag-o na diha sa alimpatakan.

Ang gugma makit-an bisan asa, ug magpabilin kini nga gugma
Bisan kini gisaulog sa daklit lang. Gani bisan unsay porma

Kon magpasubli, maayo; kon dili, aw, pasensya (usahay pud salamat)...
