History / Re: Albert Einstein's Lighter Side
August 02, 2011, 07:48:07 PM
Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn’t find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn’t there, so he looked in his briefcase but couldn’t find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn’t find it.

The conductor said, ‘Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I’m sure you bought a ticket. Don’t worry about it.’

Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.

The conductor rushed back and said, ‘Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don’t worry, I know who you are. No problem. You don’t need a ticket. I’m sure you bought one.’

Einstein looked at him and said, ‘Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don’t know is where I’m going.” -- http://hasnain.wordpress.com/

One day during a speaking tour, Albert Einstein’s driver, who often sat at the back of the hall during his lectures, remarked that he could probably give the lecture himself, having heard it so many times. Sure enough, at the next stop on the tour, Einstein and the driver switched places, with Einstein sitting at the back in his driver’s uniform.

Having delivered a flawless lecture, the driver was asked a difficult question by a member of the audience. “Well, the answer to that question is quite simple,” he casually replied. “I bet my driver, sitting up at the back there, could answer it…”

Putting it to Rest

It’s long overdue to put the term “third world” to rest.  I have long advocated to use the term “developing country” for many reasons.  One, the “third world” term is archaic, historically inaccurate, and without measurable characteristics as described by the late Peter Bauer and others.  Two, although it is hard to truly define economies that are developing, developing countries comes closest to define what is happening in the world today in a more practical way.

Indeed. While the term "developing country" is inadequate and perhaps misleading (and is being disliked--expectedly--by many countries so described), it is to be preferred to "third world" which is anachronistic, vague, inaccurate, and meaningless.

Seven Heavens is a part of cosmology found in many major religions such as Judaism, Islam and Hinduism and in some minor religions such as Hermeticism and Gnosticism.  The Divine Throne is said to be in or above the seventh heaven in most Abrahamic religions.

The number 7 in Biblical references symbolically represented perfect completion, as in the seven-day week, the seven eyes and horns seen on the Lamb of God in The Book of Revelation, and the seventh in the generations of Adam: Lamech who was completely wicked, and Enoch who walked with God.  The number also has a significance in Quranic numerology.

Interestingly, in Dante's cosmology, there are nine celestial spheres, with God residing beyond them all, in the Empyrean.

(Hell, not surprisingly, has nine circles, too.)

History / Re: How the term THIRD WORLD came about

There are between nine and twenty-one human senses, depending on who you ask, and how they define a sense. It is generally agreed that nine is the minimum. These are touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing, thermoception, nociception, equilibrioception, and proprioception. Hunger and thirst are also sometimes included. Generally, for something to qualify as a sense requires a free-standing sense organ associated with it. A sensory apparatus' primary source of information should be force data originating from outside the brain.

Thought or intuition is sometimes included as a sense, but this is incorrect. Human thoughts do not take data directly from reality, but rather from the confluence of sensory organs with which they are connected. Sometimes senses are perceived concurrently with each other, for example sounds that have colors associated with them. This phenomenon is called synesthesia, and is relatively rare, though often reported under the influence of hallucinogens or psychedelics.

so there, we have the first four dimensions.  now comes the fifth dimension.  (unfortunately, the theories on dimensions number up to 11, and i could not even find all their names!)

these days, the fifth dimension is still a theory (and so are the sixth to eleventh).  thus:

The problem with detecting the fifth dimension (or the sixth, seventh, and so on) is that our bodies are built to measure only the three old-fashioned spatial dimensions, plus time as a fourth dimension.

Scientists have been hoping that at least one of the extra dimensions might be rolled up in such a way that its influence could be seen by measuring gravity's pull on a scale of, say, a millimeter or less.  So far, no anomalies have been officially reported, although there have been occasional blips that are likely due to tiny experimental errors rather than the fifth dimension.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13070896/

Hmm, we can relate this to the number of senses...

(from Wiki)

Senses are the physiological capacities within organisms that provide inputs for perception. The senses and their operation, classification, and theory are overlapping topics studied by a variety of fields, most notably neuroscience, cognitive psychology (or cognitive science), and philosophy of perception. The nervous system has a specific sensory system or organ, dedicated to each sense.

Human beings have a multitude of senses. In addition to the traditionally recognized five senses of sight (ophthalmoception), hearing (audioception), taste (gustaoception), smell (olfacoception or olfacception), and touch (tactioception), other senses include temperature (thermoception), kinesthetic sense (proprioception), pain (nociception), balance (equilibrioception) and acceleration (kinesthesioception). What constitutes a sense is a matter of some debate, leading to difficulties in defining what exactly a sense is.

Non-human animals also have receptors to sense the world around them, with degrees of capability varying greatly between species. Humans have a comparatively weak sense of smell, whilst other species may lack one or more of the traditional five senses. Other species may also intake and interpret senses in very different ways. Some species of animals are able to sense the world in a way that humans cannot, with some species able to sense electrical and magnetic fields, and detect water pressure and currents.

The Downtown Dog: Brussels Griffon
It's the new: French bulldog
Potential names: Chewie, Jean-Pierre, Pee-wee
Preferred mode of transportation: Your man bag

The Brussels griffon is not only the perfect size for apartment life; it's genetically engineered for the big city, having been bred by cab drivers to keep rats out of stables, back when taxis were literally horse-powered. Even now the breed will earn its keep by hunting down rodents, if your neighborhood is still, you know, "bohemian." Brussels griffons make better roommates than most people on Craigslistâ€"they'll get along just fine with your girlfriend's cat, require very little grooming, and despite being ballsy rat-assassins, aren't as yippy and feisty as their size would lead you to believe. Like many urbanites, the Brussels can get moody and high-strung when bored, so keep yours entertained. Take it out to brunch, toss the ball around the loft, or dress the Ewok-faced canine in a leather vest and reenact Return of the Jedi.

The Popped Collar of Canines: Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier
It's the new: Portuguese water dog
Potential names: Errol, Tuffy, Lord Byron von Nottingsworth III
Summers on: Nantucket; Mustique; the yacht

There are few options for the man who's allergic to dogs, and fewer still if he wants a dog with the silky blond locks of an SMU Tri-Delt but simply can't tolerate any shedding on his antique Persian carpets. For that man, there's the wheatenâ€"a hypoallergenic Irish breed that, despite its pageant looks, was developed for fox and badger hunting. These days you'll find them mostly on the manicured lawns of country estates, where the only things they chase are German luxury sedans. Ignore the terrier in the nameâ€"they're nothing like their hyperactive, ankle-biting cousins. Wheatens are fun-loving and lively but also laid-back, which means they're just as happy at your country home as in your city pied-à-terre. That flaxen hair does require regular brushingâ€"but that's what the help is for.

A Big- Dog for a Big Man: Bullmastiff
It's the new: Doberman pinscher
Potential names: Anything but Spike
Required accessory: Dedicated slobber towel

Rottweilers are great if you get your kicks frightening small children. But if you want an awe-inspiring dog that will also make women go "Aww!" this is your breed. Centuries ago, British gamekeepers mixed the lumbering mastiff with the squat, tough English bulldog to create the bullmastiff, a canine bounty hunter adept at tracking and subduing poachers without tearing them to bits. They could treat a human like a chew toy, but that's not their style; bullmastiffs are docile, slobbery teddy bears at heart. Oddly enough, given their size, they make great apartment dogs. A male can easily reach 130 pounds, but the breed doesn't need much space or exercise, so look elsewhere for a running buddy.
#51844

The Outdoor Man's Sidekick: Australian Shepherd
It's the new: Border collie
Potential names: Patch, Bear, Patagonia
Preferred mode of transportation: Vintage Land Rover Defender

There's a reason Aussies are known as "Velcro dogs"â€"the devoted breed will happily attach itself to your hip and follow wherever you go, whether it's a brisk walk around Bonnaroo or the entire Appalachian Trail. The ranchers who bred them would ask the dogs to babysit in a pinch; they're born to herd and don't care whether it's cows or rowdy toddlers that they're keeping in line. They're also tireless, intelligent, and, like many of their owners, awesome at Frisbee. The Aussie is one of the only breeds you can actually take mountain bikingâ€"they have no problem keeping up and aren't dumb enough to jump in front of your bike or try to eat the tires. All that energy and athleticism can make them maddeningly hyperactive, so be sure you have an acre or forty of open space and that you train your Aussie early.

Joe Biden is a landlord to the Secret Service.

That's right.

The Washington Times reports that Biden has collected $13,200 from the Secret Service since April to rent a cottage adjacent to his Wilmington, Del., home and continues to charge the agency rent. The Secret Service has agreed to pay $2,200 per month for use of the house in order to provide security to the Biden family, according to Edwin M. Donovan, special agent in charge at the Secret Service's Office of Government and Public Affairs in Washington.

(By the way, that's no discount on the rent--the Times reports that's the amount paid by the previous tenant.)

Some of the watchdog types interviewed by the Times questioned whether the agreement is appropriate, especially given Biden's deficit reduction leadership role. Leslie Paige, spokeswoman for Citizens Against Government Waste, said there's no question Biden deserves protection, "but this arrangement seems bizarre to me."

"You'd think the vice president, who shepherded the deficit committee, would think twice about charging the Secret Service rent. Why would he need the money? I don't get it."

The agency says it is a unique situation. "We don't pay rent to any other protectees," Donovan told The Ticket, but he added that the agency had wanted to be in close proximity to the vice president's house. Officials had been renting other properties in the area when Biden's cottage tenant moved out. So, the Secret Service reached out.

"The cottage was an existing rental property at the time the Secret Service signed its lease," Kendra Barkoff, press secretary for the vice president, informed the newspaper and wrote in an email to The Ticket. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Juan Baptista dos Santos

As a child, Juan was considered quite handsome, fit and well proportioned â€" except for the two distinct penises and third leg he possessed. Santos’ third leg was actually two legs which were fused together and while it lacked motor control, it could be moved freely by hand. Both penises functioned perfectly. An 1865 report stated that Santos used both penises during intercourse and, after finishing with one he would continue with the other. It also stated that he had a ravenous sexual appetite.

Blanche Dumas

She had a very broad pelvis, two imperfectly developed legs and a third leg attached to her coccygeus and, in addition to normal well developed breasts, she also had two smaller rudimentary breasts â€" complete with nipples â€" close together above her pubic area. Furthermore Blanche also had two vaginas and two well-developed vulvas and, allegedly, both had equally developed sensitivity. Her sexual appetite was said to be very pronounced. She was know to have many male admirers and was know to ‘entertain’ men with both her vaginas.

EINSTEIN was asked by his hostess at a social gathering to explain his theory of relativity. Said the great mathematician,

"Madam, I was once walking in the country on a hot day with a blind friend, and said that I would like a drink of milk."

"Milk?" said my friend, "Drink I know; but what is milk?"

"A white liquid," I replied.

"Liquid I know; but what is white?"

"The colour of a swan's feathers."

"Feathers I know; what is a swan?"

"A bird with a crooked neck."

"Neck I know; but what is this crooked?"

"Thereupon I lost patience. I seized his arm and straightened it. "That's straight," I said; and then I bent it at the elbow. "That's crooked."

"Ah!" said the blind man, "Now I know what you mean by milk!" -- http://oaks.nvg.org/

COTTONDALE, Ala. (AP) â€" Authorities say a woman who dressed like a man and drew a beard on her face has robbed an Alabama bank.

Police say the suspect robbed the Cottondale branch of the Bank of Tuscaloosa on Friday, and she may have been involved in another bank heist earlier this month.

Witnesses told officers she had a "drawn on" beard when she entered the bank. Police say she told tellers she had a bomb and demanded money after placing a device on a counter.

She took an undisclosed amount of money and then fled the scene.

The FBI and local police are investigating. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

An avid Xbox gamer died from a blood clot which formed as a result of marathon gaming sessions, an autopsy has revealed.

According to the UK’s Sun newspaper, 20-year-old Brit Chris Staniforth, who had never had any serious health problems before, played on his Xbox for up to 12 hours at a time.

The pathologist who performed the autopsy said that the clot, known as deep vein thrombosis, was the cause of Staniforth’s death.

Such clots can form in the legs or lower part of the body when a person stays in the same position for a long period of time without taking a break. For the clot to be fatal, it would have to become detached and enter the bloodstream, where it can eventually cause a blockage in the lungs. Air passengers on long-haul flights are particularly at risk if they sit in the same position for the entire journey.

Chris Staniforth’s father, David, told the Sun, “Chris lived for his Xbox. When he got into a game he could play it for hours and hours on end, sometimes 12 hours in a stretch. He got sucked in playing Halo online against people from all over the world.”

He continued: “I’m not for one minute blaming the manufacturer of Xbox. It isn’t their fault that people use them for so long. But I want to highlight the dangers that can arise.”

But let’s just take a moment to get this into perspective. Most gamers do not die from blood clots caused by playing video games for long stretches. Staniforth was extremely unlucky.

But just as passengers on long-haul flights are advised to do, it would be wise to get up and have a stretch from time to time â€" it’ll prevent the onset of a stiff back if nothing else.

A spokesperson for Xbox-maker Microsoft told the Sun: “We recommend gamers take breaks to exercise as well as make time for other pursuits.” -- http://news.yahoo.com/
