(EIM)   - (BANAT NEWS)

AUGUST 5, 2011, 5:17 P.M. ET

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. blue-chip stocks closed higher Friday in a whipsawed trading session, but it wasn't enough to prevent major indexes from staging the biggest weekly decline since the financial crisis.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished up 60.93 points, or 0.54%, to 11444.61. For the week, the blue-chip index finished down 698.63 points, or 5.75%, its biggest weekly point drop since October 2008. It has dropped 9.75% over the last two weeks and is down 1.15% for the year.

Stocks experienced turbulent trading through much of Friday's session. The Dow gained as much as 171.73 points minutes after the open following a better-than-expected U.S. jobs report, but lost those gains within the first half-hour of trading and dropped as much as 244.68 points at its morning low.

The measure bounced off the lows in the early afternoon as investors cheered news that Italy will speed up its fiscal-consolidation timetable. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi pledged to push labor reforms and said Italy would balance its budget by 2013, a year earlier than planned.

Berlusconi's comments came at a hastily called news conference in an effort to quell fears about the euro zone's third-largest economy.

"The somewhat stabilizing news out of Europe [allowed us] to bounce from very oversold levels," said Tom Donino, co-head of trading at First New York Securities.

The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index edged 0.69 point, or 0.06%, lower to 1199.38. For the week, it finished down 7.2%, its biggest percentage drop since November 2008. The index is down 10.83% throughout the last two weeks.

The Nasdaq Composite Index tumbled 23.98 points, or 0.94%, to 2532.41. The technology-oriented index slumped 8.13% this week and is down 11.42% over the last two weeks.

Volume was heavy, as 8.62 billion shares traded hands in NYSE composite volume. It was the largest volume day since May 7, 2010, the day after the "flash crash." By comparison, average daily volume this year is 4.14 billion, excluding Friday's action. -- http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110805-717438.html

At Thursday’s secret informal meeting in Tokyo, Japan, President Benigno Aquino III and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Chair Al Haj Murad Ibrahim said both sides want “to fast track the negotiations" so that they can implement whatever agreement is made before Aquino’s term ends in 2016.

At a press conference in Malacañang on Friday, Government of the Philippines (GPH) Peace Panel Chair Marvic Leonen was asked how soon the President wants a peace agreement with the MILF and he replied “It’s four years and eleven months more to go, so soon enough."

“Mahirap magbigay ng taning kapag nagne-negotiate," he explained. “Kasi kapag nagbigay ka ng taning o ng specific deadline, it can be bound to be frustrated because both of you are pressuring each other to achieve that deadline without looking whether you are keeping substantively with your agreements.".

Further interviewed by GMA News Online, Leonen said, “We don’t want to have a scenario where the ceasefire is forever. A timetable is only indicative. It gives the panel a target to work for."

He said that the MILF viewed the government’s offer for a meeting with the President as a “grand gesture" and a “great leap forward," adding that the Moro group was honored that this historical meeting had taken place.

This was the first time, he noted, that a Philippine president had met with the MILF chair since the negotiations began 14 years ago.

Leonen clarified to reporters that the MILF is no longer considered as a secessionist group.

“They are not asking to be a separate state. Their proposal is that they be considered Filipino citizens but with Bangsamoro as a national identity. There is no international law or domestic law implication of the government meeting with a group that it wants seriously to have peace with in any other place in the entire planet," he said.

The MILF said it was Aquino who “initiated" last June having a “personal meeting" with Murad anywhere in the Philippines.

The next formal exploratory talks between the two panels are scheduled on August 22-24 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The government is expected to issue a counter-proposal to the MILF's demand to set up a "state within a state" for Muslim provinces in Mindanao. â€"MRT/VS, GMA News

Health and Food / Re: Trappist Beer
August 05, 2011, 09:18:37 PM
In 1997, eight Trappist abbeysâ€"six from Belgium (Orval, Chimay, Westvleteren, Rochefort, Westmalle and Achel), one from the Netherlands (Koningshoeven) and one from Germany (Mariawald) - founded the International Trappist Association (ITA) to prevent non-Trappist commercial companies from abusing the Trappist name. This private association created a logo that is assigned to goods (cheese, beer, wine, etc.) that respect precise production criteria. For the beers, these criteria are the following:

The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey, by or under control of Trappist monks.

The brewery, the choices of brewing, and the commercial orientations must obviously depend on the monastic community.

The economic purpose of the brewery must be directed toward assistance and not toward financial profit. --Wiki

The Trappist order originated in the Cistercian monastery of La Trappe, France. Various Cistercian congregations existed for many years, and by 1664 the Abbot of La Trappe felt that the Cistercians were becoming too liberal. He introduced strict new rules in the abbey and the Strict Observance was born. Since this time, many of the rules have been relaxed. However, a fundamental tenet, that monasteries should be self-supporting, is still maintained by these groups.

Monastery brewhouses, from different religious orders, existed all over Europe, since the Middle Ages. From the very beginning, beer was brewed in French cistercian monasteries following the Strict Observance. For example, the monastery of La Trappe in Soligny, already had its own brewery in 1685. Breweries were only later introduced in monasteries of other countries, following the extension of the trappist order from France to the rest of Europe. The Trappists, like many other religious people, originally brewed beer as to feed the community, in a perspective of self-sufficiency. Nowadays, trappist breweries also brew beer to fund their works and for good causes. Many of the trappist monasteries and breweries were destroyed during the French Revolution and the World Wars. Among the monastic breweries, the Trappists were certainly the most active brewers: in the last 300 years, there were at least nine Trappist breweries in France, six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, one in Germany, one in Austria, one in Bosnia and possibly other countries.

Today, seven trappist breweries remain active, 6 in Belgium and 1 just over the Belgian border, in the Netherlands.

In the twentieth century, the growing popularity of Trappist beers led some brewers with no connection to the order to label their beers "Trappist". After unsuccessful trials, monks finally sued one such brewer in 1962 in Ghent, Belgium. --Wiki

A Trappist beer is a beer brewed by or under control of Trappist monks. There are a total of 174 Trappist monasteries worldwide (as of April 2011); only seven (six in Belgium and one in the Netherlands) produce Trappist beer and are authorized to label their beers with the Authentic Trappist Product logo that indicates a compliance to the various rules of the International Trappist Association. --Wiki

Technology / Google is harmful to our memory
August 05, 2011, 09:06:05 PM

Google is one of the most easily-recognizable, and most helpful, web-sites ever devised. Question: Could it be harmful to our memory? Answer: Yes. Constant repetition builds and bolsters our memory. Whether it is cooking, driving, working or playing, the same actions repeated over and over again reinforces our memories, and helps us to continue that activity in less and less time, and with more and more efficiency. Google, however, helps us to forget. When information is so easily and readily accessible, we don’t have to remember how we got that information, and our memory doesn’t become as well-reinforced. -- http://listverse.com/

What is in a name? According to the University of California in San Diego, a longer life! People with initials that double as “negative” words (like D.U.D., I.L.L., or D.E.D., for example) can expect to see a decrease in life-expectancy by as much as three years! Those with initials that double as “positive” words (like W.O.W. or J.O.Y.) can live almost 4.5 years longer than the average life-expectancy! No one is sure why this is the case, however. The only known way to confront this issue is to change your name! -- http://listverse.com/

    3 tbls. oil
    1 large chopped onion
2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
    1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed
    3 tbls. Fish Sauce
    1 tsp salt
    freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Scald the penis, then drain and clean. Place the penis in a saucepan, cover with cold water, and bring to a boil. Remove any scum, then simmer for 10 minutes. Drain and slice.
Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the onion, garlic, and coriander and fry until the onion is golden. Add the penis slices and fry on both sides for a few minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients with a good grinding of pepper, add enough water to cover, and bring to a boil.
Lower the heat, cover, and simmer for about 2 hours, or until tender.
Add a little water from time to time if necessary to prevent burning.

Breaded testicles with stewed peppers and onions

Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 20 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients

    50 ml white wine vinegar
    seasoned flour, for dusting
    2 eggs, beaten
    100 g fresh breadcrumbs
    2 tbsp vegetable oil
    40 g unsalted butter
1 small bunches flat leaf parsley, leaves picked from stalks

For the vegetables

1 large onion, peeled and finely sliced
    3 cloves garlic, finely sliced
1 large red pepper, seeds removed, sliced
1 large yellow pepper, seeds removed, sliced
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
    100 ml water
    salt and black pepper

Method

1. With a sharp knife, split the tough skin-like muscle that surrounds each testicle and transfer to a large saucepan.

2. Cover with water and vinegar. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes, until tender. Drain and rinse under cold water until cool. Slice each testicle into 1cm thick ovals and set aside.

3. While the testicles are cooking, tip the sliced onion, garlic and peppers into a large pan. Add the extra virgin olive oil and water. Cover and cook over a high heat for about 10 minutes, until soft. Season well and set aside.

4. Toss the sliced testicles in the flour, followed by the beaten egg and finally the breadcrumbs. Heat a large pan with the vegetable oil and fry, in a single layer, for 3-4 minutes until golden. Add the butter, let it sizzle for a minute and stir in the parsley.

5. Season the testicles and serve with the stewed peppers. -- http://uktv.co.uk/

Ljubomir R Erovic hes been cooking testicles for over 25 years.

He is the founder, organizer and driving force behind The World Testicle And Aphrodisiacs Cooking Championship, which has been held annually in his native Serbia since 2004.

Since founding the championship he has appeared on national television in Serbia and in media across the world.

Ljubomir was born in Gornji Milanovac, in the Shumadija region in central Serbia. He graduated from Engineering College and also attended a music academy. He played music professionally until 1998 mainly evergreen and jazz.

When not cooking or eating testicles, or helping others to do so, he now runs a company involved in the maintenance of medical and dental equipment.

He is married with one daughter. -- http://www.ballcup.com/

Cooking with balls: the world's first testicle cookbook

Everyone's very excited about a new e-cookbook launched today, by online publishers YUDU. It's been compiled by a Serbian fellow called Ljubomir Erovic who has apparently been a testicular cook for some 20 years.

"The tastiest testicles in my opinion probably come from bulls, stallions or ostriches, although other people have their own favourites," says Mr Erovic. He also uses those from pigs and turkeys in his cooking and points out that "all testicles can be eaten - except human, of course". Glad to hear it Ljubomir.

Testicles are rich in testosterone (no kidding!) and are believed by many to have powerful aphrodisiac qualities.

Erovic reckons "the best for aphrodisiac properties are sheep and stallion testicles". So there you go.

While the ingredient is fairly challenging, most of the dishes in the book are less adventurous, from testicle pizza, goulash, battered testicles to barbecued testicles and giblets. To be fair though, it doesn't hurt to keep it simple, and there are a couple of more demanding recipes in there, for instance, calf testicles in wine (white or red but not sweet) and testicles with bourguignon sauce.

As for preparation, the recipe for omelette with calf testicles starts, "Remove fine veins from the testicles and put them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes". Presumably, this refers to the testicles, not the veins, but in such untested waters you can never be sure - however there are videos guides for the nervous.

The book says testicles should be soaked in water before cooking, to soften them up, and cooks are advised that they will need a "very sharp knife" to tackle them with, so I'm thinking they're perhaps a little tough. Has anyone tried them? -- http://www.guardian.co.uk/

By WILL WEISSERT - Associated Press | AP â€" Thursday, August 4, 2011

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) â€" A Texas jury convicted polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs of child sexual assault on Thursday, in a case stemming from two young followers he took as brides in what his church calls "spiritual marriages."

The head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stood stone-faced as the verdict was read. Jeffs, who acted as his own attorney, stood mostly mute for his closing argument, staring at the floor, for all but a few seconds of the half hour he was allotted.

At one point he mumbled, "I am peace," and said no more. The only noise in the courtroom was the creaking of wooden benches brimming with spectators.

Jeffs, 55, had claimed his religious rights were being trampled on and that God would seek revenge if the trial continued. He now faces up to life in prison. The sentencing phase of the trial was starting after the verdict, and Texas' attorney general said it could take three days.

Prosecutors used DNA evidence to show Jeffs fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl and played an audio recording of what they said was him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old. They also played audio recordings in which Jeffs was heard instructing young women on how to please him sexually.

Senate Electoral Tribunal

Zubiri said he has already directed his lawyers to make a proper manifestation before the Senate Electoral Tribunal “with the end in view of expediting the proceedings and with the prayer that the Tribunal come up with a decision at the soonest possible time.”

“Handa ko pong tanggapin ang anumang hatol mula sa nasabing hukuman," he said.

Zubiri also said he has not benefited from having held his post in the past 4 years. “No amount of power, position or wealth is worth sacrificing one's honor and integrity.”

Zubiri also warned his detractors, "As I paraphrase a quote from General Douglas Macarthur that: I am not actually retreating; I am merely advancing in another direction."

‘My rival’

Pimentel III filed an election protest after Zubiri snatched the 12th and last senatorial post in 2007.

Pimentel's protest is still pending before the Senate Electoral Tribunal. Zubiri also filed a counter-protest.

New witnesses, including suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Governor Zaldy Ampatuan and former Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol, recently came out saying they were instructed by Malacañang to pad votes for Zubiri in 2007.

Ampatuan, an accused in the Maguindanao massacre case, also revealed he was ordered to cut the votes for opposition bets Panfilo Lacson, Noynoy Aquino, and Alan Peter Cayetano

Zubiri, who ran under the administration ticket, won the post by a slim margin of around 21,000 votes over Pimentel, who ran under the opposition.

Enrile to Zubiri: You will be back

Immediately after his speech, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile took the stand and commended Zubiri for what he called was a great show of moral courage.

Enrile said, “never had I thought that I would witness today a show of moral courage…Many people in this life possess physical courage, but rarely did I see a man stand up to what he believes in.”

Enrile, the most senior member of the upper chamber, said he thought it was the first time a senator has resigned under such circumstances.

He said he has yet to “study” Zubiri’s resignation before he comes out with a decision. He also said Zubiri, whom he considers as one of the most articulate, promising and gifted member, would be coming back soon. -- http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/

MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) - Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri resigned from the Senate on Wednesday following accusations of fraud in the 2007 elections, but insisted the allegations were "unfounded."

In his privilege speech, Zubiri said: “I am resigning because of these unfounded accusations against me, and this issue has systematically divided our nation and has cast doubts in our electoral system which have affected not only myself, this institution but the public as well.”

He denied that he cheated in order to win a seat in the 2007 senatorial race.

Zubiri's mother, wife, other family members and close friends attended this afternoon’s session.

Zubiri narrated his accomplishments as a legislator and said recent allegations, which have also affected his family, are already hampering his work. He said it would be an injustice if his full concentration would not be devoted to his job.

“Lubha na akong nasaktan, kasama ang sakit at hapding nadarama ng aking pamilya. At dahil dito, ang aking tungkulin bilang isang Senador ay lubha nang nadaramay at para bang nawawalang saysay,” he said.

Without naming his rival Aquilino 'Koko' Pimentel III, Zubiri said: “My rival took advantage of this political situation. He and his supporters are now asking for my resignation as a duly elected Senator, despite the pendency of his election protest at the Senate Electoral Tribunal. My political detractors began calling me ugly names and dragging the name of my family in entirety.”
