Yes! Charity work..like programs such as 'Doctor's without borders' or 'Save  A Child's Heart', where they go to underdeveloped countries and provide free medical treatment for a limited time. I know a physician in New Jersey, by the name of Dr. Dioscoro Villanueva, M.D., who is the region's renowned cardiothoracic surgeon. He goes back to the Philippines every summer to provide health care to people in his home province and barangays in his hometown. It is very humbling kaayo to hear things like that, because he gives back to the community that he came from, and from the graces that was bestowed upon him. Dr. Villanueva is extremely well respected in the medical community in the tri-state region of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York, as he has trained Hundreds of American surgeons in his way of cardiothoracic surgery. The man has saved thousands of lives throughout his career and stands on a pedestal in the Medical Community---yet he never once forgotten his childhood and his home country.

Dodong i think there are some surgical procedures on how to stop the sweaty areas in our bodies... di ba dong???

'Te, there are some surgical treatments for excessive armpit sweating, which requires the excision of the axillary skin, with or without removing subcutaneous tissue, and the removal of the sweat glands. However, the cons are the extended time it requires to heal, the would care and limited ability to move the shoulder lest, result in the opening of the scab and infection to set in. There are some non-invasive surgeries out there, which are priced around anywhere between $10,000-$20,000, tho--depending on the kind of technique used.

Book Reviews / Dialogues Across Civilization
November 03, 2007, 02:21:50 PM
From reading Roxann Prazniak’s Dialogue Across Civilizations, the revolving main themes being discussed were the philosophies of Socrates, the famous Greek philosopher, and those Confucius, the famous Chinese philosopher. Though the Greeks were literally around the other side of the world and had no direct emissaries to the Chinese during the Hellenistic period, it was rather interesting to see that Socrates and Confucius both shared in the idea of social order. It was through this system of social order that a political state was to remain stable and long lasting; Confucius, as what Prazniak discusses in the book, stresses the concept of filial piety as the way in keeping the social order in balance. By this, the children pay their obeisance to their parents, the same way as the people pay their obeisance to the municipal and government officials, and the same way as officials pay their obeisance to the Emperor. Through this process, the system of social order was stressed in that there was the upper echelon of society, which was His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor of China and his royal retinue. Then there were the educated gentry who constituted government and below them were the peasants. This was quite similar to that of Socrates’ vision of a perfect state where there were the philosopher kings in the upper echelon, below them were the guardians and below them were the workers.

In a way it is rather interesting to see that these two civilizations, which were thousands of miles apart with different linguistic forms as well as political and religious establishments, had philosophers such as Socrates and Confucius who both strived for idealistically similar concepts. As what Prazniak stated in the book Dialogues Across Civilizations, the philosopher Socrates was not that popular after his death and did not really influence the many Greek city states of Athens, Ithica, Sparta and the likes because the leaders of these city states did not completely adopt the teachings of Socrates after his death, unlike that of China where later dynasties codified the use of Confucius’ teachings and the unification of China under the Han, Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties. One major issue that puzzled me was that why did the Chinese lords refused to take Confucius’ council when he was still alive? And Why was Confucius’ teachings so popular after he was dead?  Throughout the lectures in class, there was clear discussion in how the Japanese society adopted the teachings of Confucius to that of the indigenous folk religion of Shinto. How did the religion of Shinto develop and is it related to the earlier animistic religions of Korea prior to Chinese superfluance in that region?

From reading Prazniak’s Dialogue Across Civilizations, I realized that there really was no major flaw besides the fact that Prazniak was very broad when describing the philosophical teachings of Socrates, and didn’t really go into deeper detail with the comparison with Socrates’ vision of a perfect state and that of Confucius’s idea of a perfect state. The only comparison that they had was in the end of page 25 and page 26 and of which was rather brief. I would have rather liked it better of Prazniak discussed the kinds of teaching methods that Socrates utilized and his personal influence of the political discourse of the Greek city of Athens during the reign of the 30 oligarchs, who were his former students, but eventually became the autocratic rulers that showed no sage-like qualities that Socrates’ stressed about. Nor does Prazniak talk about the different schools of thought that Confucius created during his life nor does the author talk that there were over 2,000 student followers of Confucius during his life. I would have liked it better if there were comparison to other European philosophers such as the Roman political philosopher named Virgil, who also lived during the classical age of continental Europe. One thing that I was quite disappointed was the fact that Prazniak really didn’t discuss how Socrates affected European societies centuries after his death or if his teachings were in use at all. Prazniak also didn’t discuss about the formation of a national identity and how both Confucius and Socrates influenced or didn’t influence the formation of political discourse of nation states. Clearly we know that Confucius’ teachings were nationalized by the time honored Han dynasty and became the central theme of the prevailing Chinese dynasties from the Han, to the Tang to the Yuan to the Ming and to the Qing. However, Prazniak never discussed whether or not Socrates’ teachings affected the formation of the Roman Republic, the Parthian states, the Etruscan State and the surrounding peripheral states of Greece.

Book Reviews / The Gods Will Have Blood
November 03, 2007, 02:20:41 PM
(One of my favorite literary works of all time.)

The novel The Gods Will Have Blood, which was written by Anatole France, tells tell the story of the people who lived during the French Revolution of the 18th century. Specifically, the novel tells the story of a man by the name of Evariste Gamelin and how he is affected by the Revolution, showcasing how the Revolution can change a person completely when given power; all in the name of the Revolution and for the good of the state. Evariste Gamelin, starts as an idealistic, honourable and just person devoted to the Republic, but turns into a dangerous fanatic who becomes complately numb to the world in his duty for the Revolution.

Though the man by the name of Evariste Gamelin may have been influentially responsible for the deaths of many of his fellow countrymen by the feared guillotine in his later years; he was a humble and simple borgeouise member of society prior to the outbreak of the French Revolution. As described by Anatole France in the first chapter of the novel The Gods Will Have Blood, Evariste Gamelin was an artist, a pupil of Jacques Louis David, who was the most famous artist of the period, and was a supporter of Maximilien Robespierre and a member of the Convention. Citizen Evariste Gamelin can also be described as a man of strong convictions, of which he so strongly believed to be for the good for the state and the people. His very own mannerisms illustrated and depicted an aura of purpose and revolutionary spirit, which can be seen in page 27 of the novle, “Evariste Gamelin strode purposefully up the nave: the arches, which for so long had heard the holy officeers of the day chanted by the surplice-clad brothers of the community of St. Paul.”

Mesouir Evariste Gamelin is also a man of respectable nature, one who was even recognized as a respectable man in a conversation with the magistrate, “I knew you would come and put your name to it, Citizen Gamelin. Made of the right stuff you are. That’s the trouble with this section; there aren’t enough like you. Lukewarm most of them; no moral backbone. I’ve put it to the Committee of Surveillance that all those who don’t sign this petition don’t get their certificate of citizenship,” (France, 28). The response that Gamelin gives to the magistrate tells much about his character and Revolutionary zealotry, “I’d sign with my blood to get these Federalist traitors banished…the citizens will have to be made to come. Fine them, if they don’t,” (France, 28). That last statement was the response Gamelin gave to the magistrate on the issue of apathetic citizens failing to complete their revolutionary purpose. The tone in which the statement was said is an epitome of how deep the French Revolution has truly influenced the domestic life of people; in particular that of the life of Evariste Gamelin.

There is one particular passage in the novel The Gods Will Have Blood that depicts how the French Revolution has changed the mindset of the main character Evariste Gamelin in that he himself begins to detest the old artistic style of pre-revolutionary France as an enslavement of the mind and a classed structure; “He recognized in them the degrading effects of the monarchy and the shameful corruptive influences of the Courts. He accused himself of having been taken in by such contemptible style and of having demeaned his genius by such enslavement,” (France, 35). Gamelin describes classic art of monarchic styles as a form of ‘enslavement’ and he strategically states that his interest now is in the charcoal sketches of “Liberty, of the Rights of Man, of the French laws, of the Republican virtues or proletarian Hercules overwhelming the Hydra of Tyranny,” which illustrates how his inner artistic nature has been changed and influenced by the Revolution.

One example of how the character of Evariste Gamelin has been influenced by the cheers of the people would be when Gamelin was defending Guillergues in court and said before the court, “When considering a crime so great as stealing the sinews of victory from the defenders of our country, we need to be shown positive proof of guilt. We have not been shown any proof,” (France, 135) and as a result of this, the verdict was not guilty. To the surprise of Gamelin, he was cheered as the hero of the Revolution, a man who stood up for the rights of his fellow man and in the process. Such words that were herded to Gamelin were, “Evariste! You’re good, you’re so noble, and you’re so generous! Listening to you in there, your voice was so gentle and so manly.” These words and auspicious blessings from the people further enhanced Gamelin’s blind conviction on the Republic and on the good of the revolution; it solidified his view that through the court would justice be done unto the people for the people and by the people.
Power and blind conviction hardens the heart of Evariste Gamelin and changes him from a melodramatic artisan and a lover to a man who became a mere shell of his former self. Gamelin demonstrates this in one particular trial, in which he convicts a former aristocratic General as well as a poor old woman who demonstrated treacherous Royalist sentiments and he reasoned that she rightful deserved the justice of death as he reasoned in his own words, “ If reserved only for the aristocrats, the guillotine would have appeared to him as a sort of iniquitous privilege,” as a result of this, Gamelin was beginning to turn punishment into a religious and mystical ideal, to give it a virtue and merit of its own. In the end he truly believes that society owed its criminals their proper punishments as a right of the people. The novel Let the Gods Have Blood successfully shows the total change of characters by the French Revolution; in this case it is the character of Mesouir Evariste Gamelin, who was once an artist in training; later becoming one of the many men who were responsible for the deaths of the thousands of innocent French citizens. Gamelin is rather important in that it illustrates the gravity of the French Revolution and its deep rooted effects in the daily lives of French politics, government, and civilian life.

Book Reviews / Our Lady of Guadalupe
November 03, 2007, 02:19:02 PM
Stafford Poole’s Our Lady of Guadalupe was rather an interesting piece of work in that in focused in one of the major factors that influenced the creation of a Mexican national identity. Stafford Poole also talks about how the inception of Coriollismo was supplemented by the use of the Lady of Guadalupe as an identifying factor; one that strengthened their discourse against the privileged peninsulares within New Spain. The author also successfully relates how the Lady of Guadalupe was later utilized during the war for independence when insurrectionist leaders such as Hidalgo lead his armies under the banner of the darked skinned Lady of Guadalupe, which was noted to have been effective in mobilizing the native peoples to join their cause. Likewise, Stafford Poole also explains that the Spanish military forces utilized the same tactic in employing an image of the Blessed St. Mary for their cause, specifically dressing the image of the Lady of Remedios in Spanish military uniform.

The exuberance and religiosity of New Spain was illustrated throughout the reading as a primary force in controlling the native peoples as well as legitimizing the rule the Kingdom of Spain had over its dominions in the new world. And from analyzing the historical background of Spain, one can’t help but notice the intolerant, crusading spirit of the people conquistadores and the Franciscan, Dominican and Jesuit missionaries that would tame the indigenous natives.

What I personally find intriguing is the varying stories when it comes to the story of the Lady of Guadalupe, particularly with the varying age changes of Juan Diego when he first met the Lady of Guadalupe and the differences in account of his marriage to Maria Lucia. Another point that I realized while reading the passage was that Juan Diego and his uncle were practically forgotten years after the appearances of the Lady of Guadalupe; which relates to the racism within the hierarchical system in New Spain. That and the fact that the Creoles of New Spain were utilizing the Lady of Guadalupe as a force to increase their position in country, despite the fact that the image of the Mother Mary appeared to a native and not to a Spaniard. Stafford Poole does note that the fact that the Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego reaffirmed the humanity of the native people and solidified her role as the patroness of those who were desolate, powerless, and in dire need. Some questions that arose while reading this book was that why didn’t Bishop Zumarraga name the Lady in native Nahua language, especially when the Lady spoke in Nahua to Juan Diego? The passage also talks about the lack of attention on Juan Diego after his death; however, Poole does mention that he was later a target of interest in the 17th century. Do present day Mexicans hold him in some kind of religious regard at all? Lastly, is the Lady of Guadalupe revered at all in Kingdom of Spain or is it primarily an American phenomenon?

Book Reviews / Death of Artemio Cruz
November 03, 2007, 02:17:50 PM
I. Author

Carlos Fuentes is considered today as one of the greatest living Hispanic writers that have influenced the academic as well as social and political spectrum of modern day Latin America. Carlos Fuentes was born to Mexican diplomats in 1928 and was given a privileged lifestyle that many of his contemporaries did not have during that time period in Mexico . His skill as an acclaimed essayist, author, journalist, diplomat and academic scholar can be linked to his private education in the prestitions Colegio de México, School of Law at the National University of Mexico and Institut des Hautes Études Internationales in Geneva as well as from his diplomatic parents . Carlos Fuentes has written multiple works in his lifetime, which include Los Días Enmascarados, La Región Más Transparente, Aura, La nueva novela Hispanoamericana, Zona Sagrada, Cambio de Piel, Cumpleanos, El Tuerto Es Rey, Diana o La Cazadora Solitaria, Terra Nostra, Una Familia Lejana, Agua Quemada, Gringo Viejo, Cristobal Nonanto, Ceremonias del Alba . The legacy of Carlos Fuentes’ writing style is seen in The Death of Artemio Cruz in that he uses the second person tense. Carlos Fuentes was also the Mexican ambassador to France, taught in colleges and was a fellow in prestigious colleges such as Harvard, Princeton and Cambridge to name a few.

II. Monograph

In this book, the main character is Artemio Cruz, who is a dying Mexican elite and one of the many that compose the Mexican oligarchy and a veteran of the revolution, recounts his life. What makes this work rather interesting is that the author utilizes the use of first, second, and third tense that explores the youth of Artemio Cruz to the present and explains why the character became the ruthless capitalistic oligarch that he is. The corruption of Artemio Cruz from his original ideals of the revolution epitomizes the plurality of the Mexican revolution and the multiple factors that fueled the revolution, from those who followed Zapata, Villa, Carranza, Obregon and Madero. The way Fuentes illustrates the character of Artemio and the actions he carries out is rather indicative of how one person betrays his own ideals in order to achieve wealth and power; and can be seen as Fuentes’ critique on the Mexican Revolution and those that took part in it whose sole goal was to advance oneself.

Carlos Fuentes’ The Death of Artemio Cruz seems to be aimed more at the academic community, particularly those who are specialized in the Mexican Revolution and political discourse during the early 20th to the mid 20th century. The reason for this is that the book is rather hard to read in that the plot of the book rambles from one time era to another and the use of first, second and third person tenses can confuse the average reader who doesn’t have the proper historical background of the Mexican Revolution. This book is perfect for undergraduate students specializing in Mexican history or graduate/doctoral students that are Latin American specialists.

In the academic community, Fuentes’ book has been generally well received, with some reviewers claiming that it was a brilliant masterpiece, though not easily read, that covers over 50 years of Mexican Revolutionary history through the eyes of Artemio Cruz. Then there are other reviewers who regard this book as essential in understanding the political discourse in Latin America, particularly Mexico. They also claim that this work can be examined closely for its allegorical substance as well as literally for its historical commentary to better understand Mexican history.

Written by: Albrando Lorenzo Lucino Jr.

Throughout the history of European nation states, never has there been such great tragedy as to the fall of an actual government, particularly a system of rule which has been in existence since the reign of King Charlemagne the Great. Since the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe has always had monarchies that sat on the thrones of multiple regions of Europe, ranging from the Kings of Spain, and Portugal, the Kings of England and France, the Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and even to far flung reaches of Eastern Europe, there sat the Czar of Muscovy. The importance of the Royal Majesties of Europe was pivotal to the development of culture, religious doctrine, economic expansion in the form of colonial establishments, as well as military modernization. Indicative of Royal institutions was the concept of Absolute Monarchy, in which the King had complete autocratic rule over the Kingdom; in all reality he was the pillar of the kingdom, the very foundation of that particular nation state as he was unyielding, unchallenged and supreme .

The Kings of France, in particular championed themselves as those chosen by God to rule and guide France, in particular would have been King Louis XIII, King Louis XIV the Sun King and King Louis XV. The last absolute ruler of France, King Louis XVI, was a man who was not ready to take the throne of France in the mid late 18th century. His Majesty King Louis XVI, by the grace of God, King of France, was brought up to become King with the sole idea of him being the absolute primarch of the Kingdom, as was his grandfather and great grandfather before him. However, there were multiple factors that prevented Louis XVI from successfully maintaining full control of France, and these factors would in turn lead to great revolutionary consequences on the King’s part. Such factors that will be discussed in this paper is the issue of the Great Enlightenment and the core concepts that were shared and procreated throughout France and the world; another factor that would lead to Louis XVI’s demise would be his inadequacy in politics, his lazy nature that preferred court life rather than national matters. Another pivotal factor that would lead to his demise would be the rumors and actions of Queen Marie Antoinette of France; lastly a major factor that would eventually lead to the King’s downfall would be the failed attempt to escape Paris and the Revolution .

For one to properly understand the magnamity of the fall of King Louis XVI, the King of France and Navarre, one has to comprehend that throughout his lifetime he was schooled and readied to be an absolute ruler of a nation that was already undergoing philosophical revolution as an effect of the Great Enlightenment minds such as Voltaire, Montesquieu and the like.  Louis XVI was born in 1754, the third but eldest surviving son of the dauphin Louis-Ferdinand, who was the only son of King Louis XV, who along with his wife, Marie-Joseph, died in the early 1760s . Much like his predecessors, Louis XIV and Louis XV, he was instilled with the respect of traditional values of orthodox Catholicism and a distrust of the new intellectual movement of the Great Enlightenment, which stressed importance of philosophical reasoning and science over the traditional values of religion.

But unlike his predecessor, King Louis XIV, who expanded the territories of France to the border of Navarre, parts of Belgium and territories in the new world, as well as basking in strategic initiatives, which allowed the nation state of France to prosper definitely. One account of his brilliance was noted in his interest in the arts and culture of society; he was a long standing royal patron for artists; subsidizing writers such as Corneille, Racine, La Rochefoucauld, de La Bruyere and de La Fontaine, who were considered classical French writers. Besides artisan relations, the Sun King also invested heavily in the scientific revolution, which he thought enforced Royal Authority . These similar policies, which embodied efficiency, were also carried on under the rule of King Louis XV. France under these two men experienced economic expansion, particularly the rise of entrepreneurial activity.

During this political epoch, France participated in dramatic economic expansion that took hold of Western Europe at the time, France enjoyed a sustained period of peace from 1726-1741, with economic expansion continuing into the 1770s. European commerce jumped 400 percent and the trade with French Colonies jumped at 1000 percent. The brilliance of King Louis XV in terms of military strategy was great observed when he presided himself as the King of France, as his armies marched to war during the War of Austrian Succession in 1741-1748, which resulted in a victory with the conquest of Belgium, Nice and Savoy . The strategic brilliance of King Louis XV was also observed when he decided to break the power of the parlement and revamp the tax structure. He also chose new ministers such as Maupeou, Terray, the Duke of Aiguillon, who all abolished the parlements in 1771.

However, after the death of King Louis XV in 1774 of small pox, the newly crowned King of France, King Louis XVI showed minimal strategic planning or initiative as his predecessors because his actions would lead to his own demise. As an illustration of his inadequacy as king, he dismissed the minister Maupeou and recalled the parlements, which would later oppose the Monarchy’s attempts to revamp the tax system . Such is an example of the lack of efficacy within the court of France, but such actions stem back to the childhood of Louis XVI. There are multiple accounts on the mundane characteristics of the future King, one that exemplifies the situation was by Monsieur Furet, “There were few innovations in the subject matter: the basis of the lessons and the discussions drawn up for the instruction of the future king remained a mixture of religion, morality and the humanities. As far as the pupil is concerned, his works manifests a docile and unimaginative way of thinking, reflecting only what he was being taught. His style, sometimes, elegant, is more interesting than his thoughts, which are always banal; in these pastorals on paternal monarchy, superficial commentaries on Fenelon and Bossuet, the future king learned neither to conduct a reasoned argument nor to govern a state .” This nature of indecisiveness and the failure in rule was a trait that was observed early in his childhood, and would later affect France disastrously when he sat on the throne.

There are multiple examples of King Louis XVI’s political ineptitude that can be taken into account, and one of these is his failure to take supreme control of the court when he allowed the parlements to return after the dismissal of Maupeou, the very same body that would prevent Louis’ administration to make sufficient tax reforms to solve the ever growing large debit incurred by the wars of the Seven Years War and the War for American Independence in 1776, in which France provided financial and military support against the British . This incurring debt from the American Revolutionary War would continue to haunt Louis XVI in that it would eventually force him to make financial revamping in taxation, but his proposals of increased taxes would be opposed by the very same parlement that he re-convened after it was abolished by the late Louis XV.   Another political mishap that Louis XVI would make was that as soon as he gained the throne, his perception of the world was that he sought submission rather than blind obedience from what were increasingly thought as citizens instead of subjects that he uplifted the censorship of the press in 1774 an d1776 and all his major edicts were replaced as preambles . This very act would haunt Louis XVI in the future in that it would be the same press that would spread rumors about the same King and Queen of France when economic depression occurred in France, and would be the very same press that would spread the words of the French Revolution to the people. The doom of Louis XVI was already set in motion.

One major reason for Louis XVI’s faulty political precedent was probably his nonchalant attitude and the fact that he paid very little attention to the domestic issues that were ravaging France, such as the economic downturn of France in turn caused by the debt incurred during the American Revolutionary War, the expeditions to Senegal, the agricultural catastrophe during the 1780s, which resulted in inefficient amount of food to the booming population of France, which reached 28.6 million in the 1770s . The increased mouths to feed and the failing agricultural industry and the countless thousands of Frenchmen without employment grew tense and blamed His Majesty King Louis XVI for the current situation in France, which was strikingly different to the situation in France when King Louis XIV ruled France in that under his rule, economic expansion was observed, granaries were filled and the national debt was not as staggering as compared to the situation in Pre-Revolutionary France.

The nonchalant attitude of Louis was expressed by reports that claimed that Louis would rather spend time on court life rather than the matters of state. The King would take time to hunt on horseback and take strolls around Versailles rather than convene with parlement or with his ministers when it came to it . This characteristic trait was illustrated when one of Louis XVI’s aides told him about the Parisian storming of the Bastille in July 14, 1789 when the King reacted with a question, “Is this a revolt?” and was answered by, “No, your majesty, it is a revolution.”  The greatest of his political flaws was observed when the King called in the Estates General in May 1789, for the first time since 1614. Brienne resigned on 25 August 1788, and his predecessor Necker again took charge of the nation's finances. He used his position not to propose new reforms, but only to prepare for the meeting of the nation's representatives. The calling of the Estates-General led to growing concern on the part of the opposition that the government would attempt to gerrymander an assembly to its liking. In order to avoid this, the Parlement of Paris, having returned in triumph to the city, proclaimed that the Estates-General would have to meet according to the forms observed at its last meeting. The end result of the meeting was an enraged third estate, which was made up of middle class citizens and peasants, when the King refused to bar them entry in the next meeting, they made the Tennis Court Oath in June 20th, 1789 that declared that the Third Estate was the National Assembly and thus began the French Revolution and the beginning of the demise of the French Monarchy . The latter dismissal of Monsieur Neckers, who was popular with the French citizens at the time later angered the Parisian crowd, or better known to many historians as The People, in that Neckers was one of the only men in the French Court that spoke for the people. Such actions by King Louis XVI are what characterized his reign as that of unpreparedness, inability to rule France during her time of philosophical and political transition and unfittness to be King.

One major important factor that led to the demise of the French Monarchy was the invebitible and supreme power of the Great Enlightenment period, which would later manifest itself in the form of the French Revolution. The Enlightenment was pivotal in that it affected all corners of French society from the lowly peasant, to the middle class artisan, to the royal beaurocrat, to the French soldier, to the French nobles and to the very pillar of French society itself, the Royal Monarchy. Looking at the demographics of French society during the 18th century, one notes that after 1750 there was an increased in literary and philosophical movenet that aimed to diffuse the epirical and critical method of the natural sciences to the study and transformation of political, economic, and social institutions; this was called the Great Enlightenment. So great was the Enlightenment period in that by the 1780s, over 65 percent of the male population in France could read and so to was the increased literacy of women . One thing that was in effect that shook the very pillar in which the King of France and his predecessors bequethed was the shift in readings from religious and devotional works, to novels and pamphlets that focused on philosophy, politics and science. Such popular writers were Voltaire, Jean-Jacque Rousseau as well as Montesaquieu. What is rather interesting is that the Kings of the past such as Louis XIV, Louis XV focused and invested heavily on sciences as to increase royal technology and military prowess, however, the same science was also applied to natural laws and the philosophical ideals.

The same Enlightenment that the past kings once embraced as a manifestation of monarchical presence produced the notion of a strong public opinion but als articulated an alternative theory of the good and orderly society based not on divine right monarchies such as those in France, Spain, Russia, Prussia, and the Austrian Empire, but on critical reason and popular sovereignty; such as the government in the fledgling United States of America; ironically the same player that the French monarchy of Louis XVI supported in 1776  . The Great Enlightenement also led to the ise or secular, rational and republican ideas that became powerful and diffused in society with the rise of Enlightenment-based organizations, academies, masonic lodges and clubs, which became the bastion of Enlightenment thought to the very core of Parisian population. An example of this would be Pierre Agustin Beaumarchais’ Marriage of Figaro, in which a domestic servant outwits his aristocratic lord  . The most important concept that took hold of most Frenchmen in Paris was concepts of Voltaire such as defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial and the belief in social reform in which the people had a saying in government. It is this very same enlightenment that would lead to the rise of multiple pamphlets and articles declaring the illegitimacy of the Royal Monarchy during the French Revolution, the very same enlightenment that allowed the spread of rumors of Louis XVI’s traitorous stance towards France when Prussia and Austria issued the Brunswick Manifesto and entered the war against France .

One factor that led to the unpopularity of Louis XVI was the image of Queen Marie Antoinette, who was unfortunately targetted by unhealthy gossip in the court of Versaille, which resulted in the unpopularity of the Queen and as a result affected the very image of the King. One particular issue was the fact that despite the fact that both King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were married in 1770 was unable to produce a male heire to the throne until 1781. In one particular example of the unpopularity of Marie Antoinette by the masses of French citizens was the rumor that spread that she would dress up to go to plays and meet sexual partners. Such rumors ruined the very image of the French Monarchy and leveled it to a laughint stock by the people who produced pamphlets that mocked the King and Queen and their overspending nature . Most famous would be one incident in which an article was spread throughout France citing the Queen saying, “Let them have cake,” when she was addressed about the issue of the starving French citizens during the late 1780s . Another event which involved Queen Marie Antoinette, was the Diamond Necklace Affair; When the Diamond Necklace Affair was exposed, public opinion was much excited by the trial. Marie Antoinette was relatively blameless in the matter, that Rohan was an innocent dupe, and that the Comtesse de la Motte deceived both for her own gain. At the time, however, most people in France believed that Marie Antoinette had used the Comtesse as an instrument to satisfy her hatred of the Cardinal de Rohan, which unfortunately affected the very image of King Louis XVI in that it showed him as a helpless ruler, one who could not even control the dramatics of the court, and the matters of the state. The last major factor that led to the demise of King Louis XVI was the failed attempt to escape France to what is now present day Belgium, which at that time was part of the Austrian Empire.

The reasons for this attempt was that during the height of the French Revolution, the sense of national unity was quickly fractured not only by class distinctions but by religious affairs. In July 1790, the National Assembly passed the Civil Constituiton of the Clergy  , which was a measure that divided the nation. This act nationalized the church and required the catholic priests into civil servants and required them to swear an oth of allegiance to the nation. Such were concerns that King Louis XVI, who was a devout Roman Catholic to the end, took into great consideration. These fissures forced him to flee the country with his family for the region Montmédy, a royalist stronghold in the east of France. There they would gather their supporters and any foreign assistance they could from Emperor Leopold II, Catherine II of Russia, the King of Sweden and the King of Prussia, however was prevented when they were caught in Varennes . However, the foolish escape attempt by King Louis XVI was seen as nothing more than as act of treason because that same year, King Louis XVI signed  the constituiton into law, in which identified the king as the constitutional monarch of New France. However, his recent escape attempt was most un-kingly for a man who tried to flee the same country he was king of and to garner support from the rulers of Austria, Prussia, Russia, and Sweden to crush the very same country he recognized as his own and thereby betray the very same country whose constitution he signed and recognized . The King was seen by many revolutionaries as a traitor of France, and thereby undermined the power and authority of the National Assembly.

The fate of King Louis XVI, by the grace of God, King of France and Navarre was set in motion as he was eventually used as a scapegoate by the revoluitonary forces as a traitor of France and the Revolution. The history and aftermath of the French Revolution would not have been without the factors and characterstics of King Louis XVI, who is seen in modern history as a man unfit for the throne of France. Though Louis XVI was a man schooled in the arts of traditional paternal rule, he was incapable to unite France and keep the forces of the Enlightenment, which had already molded the people of Paris to the point of revolution at bay. The person of King Louis XVI may well have been a religious man, a conservative man, yet his inability to percieve the political waves that were befalling the Kingdom of France, his inability to make appropriate decisions as well as his relations to the court and Queen Marie Antoinette and his latter subvertist action in escaping his own country undermined any credibility he had as King. Men are defined by the actions they do in life and so are rightfully remembered by history accordingly; the same is true for King Louis XVI or better known in the proverbial French revolutionary taunt as les Louis durent or “Louis the last”. The death of Louis XVI was in essence the baptism and legitimization of the French Republic and the birth of New France.

Destiny

During a momentous battle, a Japanese general decided to attack even though his army was greatly outnumbered. He was confident they would win, but his men were filled with doubt. On the way to the battle, they stopped at a religious shrine. After praying with the men, the general took out a coin and said, "I shall now toss this coin. If it is heads, we shall win. If tails, we shall lose. Destiny will now reveal itself."

He threw the coin into the air and all watched intently as it landed. It was heads. The soldiers were so overjoyed and filled with confidence that they vigorously attacked the enemy and were victorious. After the battle, a lieutenant remarked to the general, "No one can change destiny."

"Quite right," the general replied as he showed the lieutenant the coin, which had heads on both sides.

When all the world is looming dark
And things seem not so clear,
When shadows seem to hover 'round
Lord, may I persevere.

When it seems everything's been tried
And there's no way to go,
Just let me keep remembering
Sometimes the journey's slow.

I may just need to stop and rest
Along the path I trod,
A time to try to understand
And have my talk with God.

As I gain new strength to carry on
Without a doubt or fear,
Somehow I know things will be right,
And so, I persevere.

Secondly, the good friends that I have been honored to make acquaintance through this web forum. And you guys know who you are. Tubag Bohol has truly influenced me to reconnect with my Boholano roots, and its rather humbling to know that though we are all so dispersed, the innate longing within our hearts for our childhood friends, family, and neighbors remain unchanged. "When you say nothing at all"

by Ronan Keating

http://youtube.com/watch?v=AuJrEBtmM1Q

Lyrics

It's amazing
How you can speak
Right to my heart
Without saying a word,
You can light up the dark
Try as I may
I could never explain
What I hear when
You don't say a thing

[CHORUS:]
The smile on your face
Lets me know
That you need me
There's a truth
In your eyes
Saying you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says
You'll catch me
Whenever I fall
You say it best
When you say
Nothing at all

All day long
I can hear people
Talking out loud
But when you hold me near
You drown out the crowd
(The crowd)
Try as they may
Could never define
What's been said
Between your
Heart and mine

[Repeat chorus twice]

(You say it best
When you say
Nothing at all
You say it best
When you say
Nothing at all)

The smile on your face
The truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand
Let's me know
That you need me

[Repeat chorus]

(You say it best
When you say
Nothing at all
You say it best
When you say
Nothing at all)

The smile on your face
The truth in your eyes
The touch of your hand
Let's me know
That you need me

(You say it best
When you say
Nothing at all
You say it best
When you say
Nothing at all)

'In the Morning'

by Gwen Stefani

http://youtube.com/watch?v=uIvNB3WnvFs

Waking up to find another day
The moon got lost again last night
But now the sun has finally had its say
I guess I feel alright

But it hurts when I think
When I let it sink in
It's all over me
I'm lying here in the dark
I'm watching you sleep, it hurts a lot
& all I know is
You've got to give me everything
Nothing less cause
You know I give you all of me

[CHORUS]
I give you everything that I am
I'm handin' over everything that I've got
Cause I wanna have a really true love
Don't ever wanna have to go & give you up
Stay up till Four In The Morning & the tears are pouring
& I want to make it worth the fight
What have we been doing for all this time?
Baby if we're gonna do it, come on do it right

All I wanted was to know I'm safe
Don't want to lose the love I've found
Remember when you said that you would change
Don't let me down
It's not fair how you are
I can't be complete, can you give me more?
& all I know is
You got to give me everything
& nothing less cause

[4 In The Morning lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

You know I give you all of me

[CHORUS]
I give you everything that I am
I'm handin' over everything that I've got
Cause I wanna have a really true love
Don't ever wanna have to go & give you up
Stay up till Four In The Morning & the tears are pouring
& I want to make it worth the fight
What have we been doing for all this time?
Baby if we're gonna do it, come on do it right

Oh please, you know what I need
Save all your love up for me
We can't escape the love
Give me everything that you have

& all I know is
You got to give me everything
& nothing less cause
You know I give you all of me

[CHORUS]
I give you everything that I am
I'm handin' over everything that I've got
Cause I wanna have a really true love
Don't ever wanna have to go & give you up
Stay up till Four In The Morning & the tears are pouring
& I want to make it worth the fight
What have we been doing for all this time?
Baby if we're gonna do it, come on do it right

'Hate That I Love You"

by Rihanna and Ne-Yo

http://youtube.com/watch?v=FIUv3dOBbCk

[Rihanna (Ne-Yo):]
That’s how much I love you (yeah)
That’s how much I need you (yeah, yeah, yeah)
And I can’t stand ya
Must everything you do
make me wanna smile
Can I not like you for awhile
No..

[Ne-Yo:]
but you won’t let me
You upset me girl
and then you kiss my lips
All of a sudden I forget
that I was upset
Can’t remember what you did

[Ne-Yo:]
But I hate it

[Rihanna:]
You know exactly what to do
So that I can’t stay mad at you
For too long, that’s wrong

[Ne-Yo:]
Girl, I hate it
You know exactly how to touch
So that I don’t wanna fuss and fight no more
So I despise that I adore you

[Rihanna (Ne-Yo):]
And I hate how much I love you boy (yeah)
I can’t stand how much I need you (I need you)
And I hate how much I love you boy (ooh)
But I just can’t let you go
And I hate that I love you so..

[Ne-Yo:]
[Hate That I Love You lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

And you completely know the power that you have
The only one that makes me laugh

[Rihanna:]
Sad and it’s not fair how you take advantage of the fact that I
Love you beyond the reason why
And it just ain’t right

[Ne-Yo:]
And I hate how much I love you girl
I can’t stand how much I need you
And I hate how much I love you girl
But I just can’t let you go
And I hate that I love you so

[Both:]
One of these days maybe your magic won’t affect me
And your kiss won’t make me weak
But no one in this world knows me the way you know me
So you’ll probably always have a spell on me..

[Rihanna:]
That’s how much I love you
How much I need you
That’s how much I need you
That’s how much I love you
That’s how much I need you

[Rihanna (Ne-Yo):]
And I hate that I love you sooo...
And I hate how much I love you boy (Hey)
I can’t stand how much I need you (I can’t stand how much I need you)
And I hate how much I love you boy (yeah...ooh)
But I just can’t let you go (But I just can’t let you go, no)
And I hate that I love you so

[Both:]
And I hate that I love you so.. so..

If I am even blessed to live that long, around 80+, I really wouldn't mind going through dementia or  other kinds of neural systemic collapse, because I was already given the chance to experience the fullness of life. So long as my wife and children are provided for, and that I was given the chance to spend some quality time with my grand children--and they given the chance to get to know their Lolo...i would be fine.

God gives and God takes. We're all here on borrowed time.

Under the International System of Units, the second is currently defined as the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom. Time is completely arbitrary and does not exist.

Your opinion?

Very true, jud ka, Ate Ging. Family is always the most important. I cannot disagree with you!! Kaibao ka two years ago I was unable to go back home for Thanksgiving Dinner because of my classes and work and na hilak ko kai gi mingaw man jud ko sa ahong mama, papa, my darling baby bros and sister. Tho i was not there, ning tawag lang ko sa telefono for 1-2 hours with my mom, naka hear lang ko sa ang voice sa ahong uncles, aunties and my cousins, my dad and my brothers. Automatically, naka happy lang ko--kai i felt that i was with them too--my spirit was with my family--despite i was 500 miles away. Pero, you are right jud, 'te. Thanksgiving is all about having a one-ness with family, and enjoying each other's company and giving grace to GOD for his blessings on all of us--despite our current situation.

Salamat kaayo for the invite!! Bitaw, maybe someday when ma human nako, maka attend pood ko ba! hahaha! Regards lang to your blessed family!

Always,

Today i realized my number one weakness is: Women

LoL, long story short: as I was doing atomic spectroscopy analysis today, a sophomore chem student was asking me to help her run tests, and being the polite student that I am, agreed to help her. I explained the basics of Atomic spectroscopy, electromagnetics, NMR data spreadsheets etc etc, and when she was asking questions (i couldnt help but ignore her questions and focus on her face)hahahaha!! I had to politely ask her to repeat the question, da! Ay sus! What to do...what to do..

Why are women so ....attractive? :P

haha kuyawa pood, 'te Ging! So daghaan mo anha sa inyong Thanksgiving Dinner? Lami bitaw nang Turkey, no? Ako, everytime mo ka-un ko ana, ma katogon ko kai ang amino acid Tryptophan, which is found in Turkey, is conducive for PNS activity. Lami jud to have Thanksgiving and have a fire burning in the fireplace--kai its so festive. And my little cousins and little brothers running around as my aunties and uncles converse with my parents in bisaya in the background...ah...life is so good. :)
