Sexy Cougar or Dangerous Predator?
Dear Prudence offers advice about a May-December encounter that the victim deems harmlessâ€"during a live chat at Washingtonpost.com.

Q. My boyfriend of two years recently told me that he lost his virginity at the age of 12 to a family friend that was 30 at the time. He swears that he is the one that seduced her and that it is a very happy memory for him; I have no reason to doubt him and he is "older" than his years and has always dated older women. But I'm very grossed out by the woman in question. I'm picturing myself allowing a 12-year-old to seduce me (I'm 30) and the thought is disgusting to me. I really don't think she is a predator and my boyfriend really does seem to have quite an effect on older ladiesâ€"they all just want to take their pants off for him. My question is mainly that I don't know how I'm going to face this womanâ€"we see her about three times a year at family events and one is coming up next month. I am not great at keeping my facial features neutral so I'm worried she's going to figure out that I know. I don't want to "out" her. I'm definitely not going to touch a drop of booze that day because I don't want to get tipsy and say something I'll regret. I really just don't know what to say to this woman or how to act in front of her! Help.

A: I agree with your disgust, but I disagree that she's not a predator. There are no circumstances under which a 30-year-old should be having sex with a 12-year-old, and I don't care what the genders are of those involved. However, instead of seeing this as a violation, for your boyfriend it's a lovely memory, so let it be. If you have trouble with your facial features, start practicing in the mirror. There surely are times at work when you're saying, "That's a great idea, boss, I'll get right on it," and you're thinking, "Another idiotic request!" but you don't want your face to give you away. You know how to be cordial to an old family friend, so make some brief polite conversation to Humberta Humberta, then walk away. -- http://www.slate.com/

'It seems a shame,' the Walrus said,
'To play them such a trick.
After we've brought them out so far,
And made them trot so quick!'
The Carpenter said nothing but
'The butter's spread too thick!'

'I weep for you,' the Walrus said:
'I deeply sympathize.'
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.

'O Oysters,' said the Carpenter,
'You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none --
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.
#51408
'A loaf of bread,' the Walrus said,
'Is what we chiefly need:
Pepper and vinegar besides
Are very good indeed --
Now, if you're ready, Oysters dear,
We can begin to feed.'

'But not on us!' the Oysters cried,
Turning a little blue.
'After such kindness, that would be
A dismal thing to do!'
'The night is fine,' the Walrus said,
'Do you admire the view?'

'It was so kind of you to come!
And you are very nice!'
The Carpenter said nothing but
'Cut us another slice-
I wish you were not quite so deaf-
I've had to ask you twice!'
#51409
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock
Conveniently low:
And all the little Oysters stood
And waited in a row.

'The time has come,' the Walrus said,
'To talk of many things:
Of shoes -- and ships -- and sealing wax --
Of cabbages -- and kings --
And why the sea is boiling hot --
And whether pigs have wings.'

'But wait a bit,' the Oysters cried,
'Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!'
'No hurry!' said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.
#51410
The eldest Oyster looked at him,
But never a word he said:
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,
And shook his heavy head --
Meaning to say he did not choose
To leave the oyster-bed.

Out four young Oysters hurried up.
All eager for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Their shoes were clean and neat --
And this was odd, because, you know,
They hadn't any feet.

Four other Oysters followed them,
And yet another four;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more, and more, and more --
All hopping through the frothy waves,
And scrambling to the shore.
#51411
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Were walking close at hand:
They wept like anything to see
Such quantities of sand:
'If this were only cleared away,'
They said, 'it would be grand.'

'If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year,
Do you suppose,' the Walrus said,
'That they could get it clear?'
'l doubt it,' said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.

'O Oysters, come and walk with us!
The Walrus did beseech.
'A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach:
We cannot do with more than four,
To give a hand to each.'
#51412
The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright --
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done --
'It's very rude of him.' she said,
'To come and spoil the fun!'

The sea was wet as wet could be,
The sands were dry as dry.
You could not see a cloud, because
No cloud was in the sky:
No birds were flying overhead --
There were no birds to fly.

People who smoke soon after getting up in the morning are more likely to develop cancer than those who light up later in the day, say US researchers.

A study of 7,610 smokers, published in the journal Cancer, said the effect was independent of other smoking habits.

Smoking in the first 30 minutes after waking nearly doubled the, already high, risk of lung cancer.

Cancer Research UK suggested people who were quick to smoke may inhale more smoke into the lungs.

Scientists at the Penn State College of Medicine in the US looked at 4,776 smokers with lung cancer and 2,835 smokers without cancer.

They showed that patients who smoked in the first 30 minutes after waking up were 79% more likely to have developed cancer than those who waited at least an hour.

The researchers said that the "time to first cigarette" effect was present even after they statistically adjusted for other factors such as the number of cigarettes smoked in a day.

Uncertainty

Another study in the same journal looked at 1,850 smokers, 1,055 of whom had head and neck cancers. It said people who smoked in the first half hour were 59% more likely to have developed a tumour than those who waited at least an hour.

The authors admit: "It is uncertain what explanation there is for the relationship".

Dr Joshua Muscar, lead researcher, said: "These smokers have higher levels of nicotine and possibly other tobacco toxins in their body, and they may be more addicted than smokers who refrain from smoking for a half hour or more."

Cancer Research UK's Professor Robert West said: "Smokers who light up soon after waking tend to smoke each cigarette more intensively.

"So the most likely explanation of this finding is that the sooner a smoker lights up, the more smoke is taken into the lungs, and the higher the level of exposure to cancer causing chemicals.

"This may help estimating levels of tobacco exposure more than just looking at the usual daily cigarette consumption." -- http://www.bbc.co.uk/

Business and Economy / Gold price jumps above $1,700
August 08, 2011, 07:31:28 PM
By Emiko Terazono
August 8, 2011 10:55 am

Gold jumped to new nominal record levels, rising above $1,700 as investors piled in following the S&P downgrade of US debt.

The bullion hit a new record of $1,714 a troy ounce in late Asian trading, although it fell back in Europe amid buying by the European Central Bank of Spanish and Italian bonds, trading up 2.3 per cent $1,700.65 an ounce.

Gold prices have been fuelled by increasing fears of sovereign debt defaults and expectations of further monetary easing in the US. Meanwhile, a further boost has been seen from investors deterred from putting funds into other haven favourites, the Swiss franc and Japanese yen, after recent government interventions to weaken the currencies.

Goldman Sachs backed that view on Monday, raising its 12 month target for bullion from $1,730 per ounce to $1,880 an ounce. The bank said it expected prices to continue to climb in 2011 and 2012 given the current low level of US real interest rates and the rise in debt worries. Although it had expected prices to peak in 2012, it now expected bullion to rise through 2012.

On commodity markets as a whole, Goldman said it was keeping its “constructive outlook” in spite of recent worries about global growth, as it expected continued strength in emerging markets and supply disappointments. It maintained its recommendation of long positions in commodities including Brent crude, copper and soyabeans.

Silver was also helped by haven buying, rising 4 per cent to $39.85 a troy ounce, but base metals were hit by increased risk aversion among investors. Tin for delivery in three months on the London Metal Exchange fell to an 11-month low, losing 5.9 per cent to $2,345 a tonne, and copper fell below $9,000 a tonne for the first time in over a month, falling 1.7 per cent to $8,960.50.

Oil was trading lower with ICE Brent, which hit a high of over $127 a barrel in April, easing $2.61 to $106.76 a barrel. -- http://www.ft.com/

Background

Shooting

The disturbances were preceded by the fatal shooting of 29-year-old black man Mark Duggan by police on 4 August 2011 during a planned arrest in which one officer was injured. Friends and relatives of Duggan, an alleged cocaine dealer and member of the 'Star Gang', claimed he was unarmed. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) stated that a non-police-issue handgun was later recovered at the scene.

The shooting took place on the Ferry Lane bridge, next to Tottenham Hale station. Duggan's girlfriend told the Evening Standard newspaper that she was shocked to learn her boyfriend of thirteen years was carrying a gun.

The incident was referred to the IPCC. This is standard practice whenever a member of the public dies as a result of police action. It is not yet known why police were attempting to arrest Duggan, but the IPCC said that the planned arrest was part of Operation Trident, a unit which investigates gun crime in London's black community, with special attention being placed on shootings relating to the illegal trade of drugs.

After the shooting incident the media widely reported a bullet was found embedded in a police radio implying Duggan fired on the police first. Preliminary ballistics tests showed that the bullet recovered from the police radio is consistent with those used by the police themselves.

Protest march

On 6 August a peaceful protest was held, beginning at Broadwater Farm and finishing at Tottenham police station. The protest was organised by friends and relatives of Duggan to demand justice for the family. Around 200 people participated in this protest.

Historical context

Widely viewed as 'the worst disturbances of their kind since the 1995 Brixton riots,' the unrest occurred in the context of tense relations between the police and the black community in north London. Commentators have drawn parallels to the Broadwater Farm riot of 1985, during which one police officer, Keith Blakelock, was murdered. Blakelock's suspected killer was the leader of a gang which was replaced by the one Duggan was a member of following his imprisonment for other crimes. --Wiki

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2011 Tottenham riots are a series of public disturbances in London, primarily in Tottenham, which began on 6 August 2011.

Urban riots extended across the London boroughs of Enfield, Lambeth, Waltham Forest, and Haringey. Attacks were carried out against the Metropolitan Police Service while local businesses were looted and set alight. At least 26 police officers were injured. The disorder followed the death on 4 August 2011 of a 29-year-old man, Mark Duggan, who was shot dead during a police operation.

Home Secretary Theresa May will return to Britain from a vacation after more than 160 people were arrested and at least 35 police officers injured during two days of rioting in London.

A Home Office spokesman in London said by telephone that May would be traveling back to the U.K. today, without giving further details. He declined to be identified, in line with government practice. The home secretary has been in contact with senior politicians and police leaders while overseas and will hold further talks with Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Tim Godwin and other officers, the Press Association reported.

Police battled rioters and looters in several areas of the capital last night. That followed disturbances in the north London suburb of Tottenham on the night of Aug. 6, after a man was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police.

“Officers are shocked at the outrageous level of violence directed against them,” Metropolitan Police Commander Christine Jones said in a statement on the force’s website. “We will not tolerate this disgraceful violence. The investigation continues to bring these criminals to justice.”  -- http://www.bloomberg.com/

Arsobispo nasubo sa human trafficking
Ni Sheila C. Gravinez
Sunday, August 7, 2011

“Sa tanan nga nag-una-una niini, we know that it’s against the law of the state and the law of the Lord.

“I hope nga labi na sa Cebu, this thing should not happen. We will do our best that this thing will be avoided,” dugang ni Palma. --Gipatik sa mantalaang SuperBalita Cebu Agosto 08, 2011.

Bible Study / Re: The Beatitudes
August 08, 2011, 04:41:11 PM
A meek person is the one who by faith sees God as great, and himself as nothing. And because of that, he submits to the righteous will of this great God. A meek person is the one who proclaims, "Not my will but Thine will be done." He submits to the will of his heavenly Father and does not argue with the Holy Scriptures where God's will is clearly revealed. Therefore, the meek believer that is being led by God is having this quality of meekness constantly being produced within him.

In Psalm 37:3 it says, ""Trust in the Lord and do good." Faith is trust. The meek person trusts the Lord, meaning he rests in God by entrusting his whole life to him. His whole being is resting upon the sure foundation of the almighty God. The meek man knows that his past, present and future rests in God. He has heard the gospel proclamation which says, "Come unto me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." The meek person who comes to Christ and trusts in him for his salvation is always at rest in God. Jesus Christ is his rest, no matter what circumstances he is facing.

A meek man is patient. He has a long view of life, knowing in the end it is not the wicked who win, but the meek. How can he be sure of this? The meek person knows that in the end God wins, and if God wins then the meek win. God himself tells us that the meek, not the wicked, will inherit the earth. The wicked may indeed possess the earth for a short time today, but the Lord tells us that when he comes back, the meek shall possess this earth. Psalms 76:9 "Then God arose to judgment, To save all the humble of the earth". -- http://robertwells.tripod.com/

Bible Study / Re: The Beatitudes
August 08, 2011, 04:40:12 PM
The Third Beatitude: Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth.

The Greek word for meek, praus, was used to refer to domesticated animals. The word does not refer to a wild, unruly animal; it refers to a strong and powerful horse or an ox that was trained and disciplined so that it could be controlled by a human. The word meek used in Matthew 5:5 refers to a strong person who is under control--a God controlled person. A meek person is a man or woman of God whose strength is controlled by God. He or she is controlled by God in thought, word, will, emotion, and action. The meek man is one who submits, not to his own will or to the will of the world, but to the great and gracious will of God.

A meek man is not a weak man. He is not wishy-washy, effeminate or timid. He is not someone who you can walk all over. A meek man is not passive and spineless. In fact the meek man is just the opposite. The one who has put their faith and their trust in Jesus Christ will be meek before God, but mighty and bold before the world and before satan. To the sinful world and to satan the meek person will be far stronger than they are.

What makes a person meek? They see God. And they see God in everything. No one becomes meek unless they can see this infinite, personal, almighty, all-wise, all-holy God, and when they see God they are immediately humbled. When we are able to see God by faith, then that is the time when the Holy Spirit allows us to become meek. Thus the meek person does not rely on himself, saying, I can do all things. I have confidence in myself. After all, I am strong and able. No, the meek person says, I see God, and he is able and willing to help me. I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.

Here's a cautionary tale for henpecked husbands:

A husband is advised by a psychiatrist to assert himself.

"You don't have to let your wife henpeck you. Go home and show her you're the boss."

The husband takes the doctor's advice.

He rushes home, slams the door, shakes his fist in his wife's face, and growls, "From now on, you're taking orders from me. I want my supper right now, and when you get it on the table, go upstairs, and lay out my best clothes.

Tonight, I'm going out with the boys, and you are going to stay at home where you belong. And another thing, guess who's going to comb my hair, give me a shave, and tie my necktie?"

His wife says calmly, "The undertaker."

Bwahaha!  ;D

Fun Fun Fun Fun: Rebecca Black Joins Katy Perry Onstage For "Friday" Performance
Posted Sun Aug 7, 2011 3:43am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Stop The Presses!

Katy Perry returned to the city she now calls home, Los Angeles, on August 5 for a three-night stint at the Nokia Theater, the latest stop on her California Dreams Tour. And while her crowd-pleasing set was packed with surprising covers (including Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and a mashup of Rihanna's "Only Girl In The World"/Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair"/Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'"), it was another cover, of Rebecca Black's "Friday" with fellow California gurl Rebecca herself joining in, that was the biggest surprise of all. And it just so happened to be a Friday night!

Katy seems determined to help Rebecca Black--or "the infamous Rebecca Black," as Katy introduced her to the Nokia crowd--extend her 15 minutes of fame. Rebecca recently made a cameo in Katy's "Last Friday Night" video (playing the BFF of Katy's geek-girl alter ego, Kathy Beth Terry), and when the two reunited onstage this week, Katy beamed at her like a proud mother figure. Their surprise duet ended with a hug, after which Katy sweetly declared, "That was our moment," referencing Rebecca's new "My Moment" single.

Ironically, though, Katy upstaged her young charge, as her superior "Friday" vocals completely overwhelmed Rebecca's reedier voice. (And Katy's fluffy pink circus-girl get-up certainly took attention away from Rebecca's more sedate gray tunic and black leggings.) But that didn't matter--the unison singing by the sold-out Nokia crowd during this a cappella duet practically drowned out both ladies, especially when partyin', partyin' spectators chanted the song's "yeahs" right on cue.

Declared Katy afterwards , "Damn it, I love the Internet!" And we're sure Rebecca feels the same way. The 14-year-old viral video sensation's life is currently a California dream come true. -- http://new.music.yahoo.com/

There's nothing more beautiful than the perfect pregnancy picture. But as these amazing shots from the geniuses behind Awkward Family Photos prove -- when they go awry they can also be perfectly cringe-worthy. Especially when the mom-to-be is posing with a Goodyear tire. Or in ballet shoes. Or while trying valiantly not to fall off a tree branch. Or (our favorite) while lovingly stroking an enormous gun.  We just hope those babies grow up with a good sense of humor.

So when a patient comes in to ask (or tell) me about the curative powers of antioxidants, I am stuck. I can give him a boring recitation of the latest findings, or mention that the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has declared that "there is limited scientific evidence to support the use of antioxidant supplements to prevent disease." And he'll tell me that the pills worked wonders for his sister-in-law out in Queens. We both sigh and look away. If he goes ahead and starts guzzling pomegranate juice, he doesn't tell me.

This momentary awkwardness exposes a larger and potentially troubling problem: the fragility of that most complicated of all partnerships, the one between doctor and patient. Many are in an ongoing tug-of-war because of a simple difference of opinion: The patient wants to live forever (natch!) and may embrace any harebrained scheme available (cf.: antioxidants); in response, the doctor assumes the chilly pose of the threatened medical ruling class.

Usually, the tug-of-war doesn't amount to much. Most doctor visits turn out to be a big nothing: a bump that isn't; a pain that fades; a rash that will go away. But once in a while, and especially as people descend the hill from middle age, that routine visit finds its way to a miserable, frightening place. Bad news is disclosed; plans must be made. And that's when antioxidants do their real harm. The arguing through the years regarding pomegranate juice and vitamin E and whether to buy a juicer has slowly corroded the mutual confidence that underlies the doctor-patient relationship. And this is a damage that has no quick remedy, real or imagined. -- http://www.slate.com/

Whether this line of inquiry turns out to be hokum or the first step toward elucidation of antioxidants' role may take years to sort out. What is evident immediately however is the wishy-washiness of your local doctor throughout the antioxidant debate: We were slow to jump onto the antioxidant bandwagon and are slower still to jump off.

This brand of muddle is standard operating procedure for clinicians; we are eternally trying to appear modern and open to the new, while remaining anchored in a reality-based mindset that demands facts and data. Many patients are put off by such caution and come to view us as fuddy-duddies, self-promoting sticks in the mud, flapping bags of hot air (not to mention greedy bastards who may be invested, literally, in maintenance of the status quo). Or else we are seen as being handcuffed and controlled by the rigid iron of Big Pharma.

With something as popular as antioxidants, which comprise a substantial piece of the $23 billion U.S. vitamin and supplement market, the problem is particularly acute. If we swim against the riptide of popular delusion and warn our patients against them, it's like we're denying the benefits of sunshine and fresh air. Any appeal to "evidence" in support of that view would have little traction with the consumer; double-blinded medical studies are counterbalanced, in America, by a parallel system of peer review in the form of a nonstop confab of health-themed talk shows, print magazines, and blogs.

But first, what exactly is a free radical? Not a fiery Berkeley politico but rather a lonely unpaired electron lost and spinning around an atomic nucleus. Electrons are compelled to travel in pairs; an unpaired electron therefore will greedily grab the next electron it meets, regardless of pedigree or station. DNA, RNA, mitochondriaâ€"it's open season. Sometimes the miscegenation does serious damage to the cell, resulting (the theory goes) in a gradual and irreversible deterioration. For us this means wrinkles and sagging and creaking joints.

The role of antioxidants in this schema is simple: They are brought onboard to hook up with the vagrant electrons and prevent damage. Harman's observation was supported by then-novel insights into management of radiation exposure, a large concern in the 1950s. One known effect of radiation was tissue damage that looked to us like aging. Among the treatments that seemed to blunt this effect were antioxidants such as melatonin, Acetylcysteine, and pentoxiphylline. Presto: A star was born. Never mind how meager the slings and arrows of everyday life are compared with radiation from an atom bomb. If it (might) work for gamma rays, imagine what it can do for my tennis elbow.

If only reality would play along. As noted by Anthes, and Michael Specter in his book Denialism, the first clear crack in the façade was the 2007 revelation in JAMA that antioxidant vitamins were not merely useless but harmful. Building on this clinical observation, a German group has developed a plausible scientific explanation of the increased risk. The title of the group's most recent publication, "Extending life span by increasing oxidative stress," pretty much sums up their view: The human cell should toughen up. It can benefit from enduring something harsh like the insult caused by free radicals. This way, the organism is more prepared to fend off the inevitable Big One, be it cancer or a toxic fume or perhaps a bout of cholera. Practice makes perfect.

But, hey, who ever let a little evidence stand in the way of a good time? Especially in this case, when the charge toward lifestyle legitimacy has been led by willowy celebrities with karmic equipoise, ably supported by the Four Horsemen of the Alternative: Drs. Weil, Oz, Null, and Chopra. The seduction of this confederacy (sex! doctors! pills!) is immense; to appreciate its power, one need only consider the pomegranate. Once a rare fruit requiring a complicated eating strategy, its derivatives are now stationed on every grocery shelf based on their promise of an antioxidant punch.

The field of antioxidants is further buffeted by the fact that no one really understands much about them, so winning an argument is greatly simplified. (And never mind that the main commercial use of antioxidants is to act as food preservatives, placing them squarely on the axis of toxicity). Their story began in the 1940s when a physician-chemist named Denham Harman set out to determine the biochemical explanation for aging. As a young man, he had worked in the lubricating department of Shellâ€"a place where the problems of a chemical spoilage caused by "free radicals" were well-known. By the mid-50s Harman hit upon the theory that the same free radicals that were cutting into petroleum industry profits could also simply and completely explain the phenomenon of aging. Better yet, he said, their effects could be ameliorated by something called antioxidants.

Antioxidants don't work, but no one wants to hear it.
By Kent Sepkowitz Posted Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at 10:04 AM ET

Few medical remedies have a more sterling reputation than that assortment of foods, pills, and general life maneuvers known collectively as "antioxidants." At last, here's something that promises better heart health, improved immunity, a pellucid complexion as well as relief against cancer, arthritis, and the blahsâ€"and it's all-natural! What's not to like?

Well, there is a wee small problem in our ongoing anti-oxidize-athon: As it turns out, we have no evidence that antioxidants are beneficial in humans. (Though if you're a Sprague-Dawley rat, there's hope.) In fact, as Emily Anthes wrote last year in Slate, the best available data demonstrate that antioxidants are bad for youâ€"so long as you count an increased risk of death as "bad."

Inspiration & Hope / We need hope
August 07, 2011, 05:31:24 PM
Revolutionary change does not come as one cataclysmic moment (beware of such moments!) but as an endless succession of surprises, moving zigzag toward a more decent society. We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world. Even when we don't "win," there is fun and fulfillment in the fact that we have been involved, with other good people, in something worthwhile. We need hope. To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, and kindness.

What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places--and there are so many--where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory. --Howard Zinn

DAVAO CITY -- Seven hundred computer units and servers were seized in a massive police raid on a business process outsourcing company (BPO) on Sobrecarey street here Thursday.

Two women employees named in the search warrant and several others are facing charges for allegedly selling cyber pornographic materials.

Judge Isaac G. Robillo Jr. of the Regional Trial Court branch 11 in Davao City issued the search warrant on Cyber City Teleservices, one of the pioneer BPO companies in the city.

The raid was conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Davao Region and the CIDG's Task Force Maverick based at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

CIDG-Davao Region chief Pedro B. Cabatingan said some employees of the BPO firm will be charged with violation of Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to Republic Act 8792 or the Electronic Commerce Act of 2000, which provides for the recognition and use of electronic commercial and non-commercial transactions.

The BPO firm was allegedly selling pornographic sites, penis enhancer with free pornographic DVD and sex toys, among others.

It took the authorities eight hours to finish the raid.

However, employees of Cyber City Teleservices denied the charge hurled against the company.

Karren Nylee Aton, 31, an information security management system compliance specialist and lead auditor for seven years now, said their company is a certified ISO 27001 registered and is not engaged in illegal activities.

"Their accusation is a no-no here in our company. I've been working here for a long time and there's no such illegal activity going on here," she said.

Lugvigne Diola, Cyber City counsel, meanwhile said the company has nothing to hide as they did not commit anything wrong.

"As far as I know, Cyber City did not commit anything wrong. But since there's due process, then we let them investigate on the matter. We respect that, anyway, the investigation is ongoing," Diola said.

The CIDG has placed the company under surveillance after they received reports that it is engaged in selling pornographic materials. CIDG then sent an agent posing as a client availing of these materials.

Cabatingan said monitoring on other call centers in the city is also ongoing. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)

(EF)

While Grace Hopper, a pioneer of computer programming, was working on the Harvard Mark II, she traced the cause of a glitch in the computer to an actual moth trapped in a relay. The moth she found can still be seen on display in the Smithsonian Museum. As some of you may be desperate to point out, this was not actually the first use of the term “bug” to describe a malfunctioning system. Thomas Edison, for example, used the word in his notebooks. However, since Admiral Hopper brought the word into the world of computers as we know it today, this lister gives credit to her. -- http://listverse.com/

Studies have shown that cockroaches break wind on the average of every 15 minutes. Even after death they will continue to release methane for up to 18 hours. In a global scale, insect flatulence is estimated to account for 20% of all methane emissions. This puts the cockroach as one of the biggest contributors to Global Warming. My research indicates that the other major contributors due to gastronomical acoustics are termites and cows. -- http://listverse.com/
