Oh! I know her! Everyone at school (SWU) did. We were all in awe of her. I saw her occasionally in campus, where I would just freeze and stare at her. It is true, it is so rare to find a person who is not only beautiful but also has a brilliant mind. I remember a story my friend told me, who was Vanessa Joyce's classmate in med school. On the very first day of their 1st yr in med school, they were given a very tough Anatomy & Physiology test. Everyone was complaining kay halos bagsak sila tanan. And these were not average students, these were all smart and ambitious people who were very competitive. When the scores were announced, shock sila tanan kay ang score ni Vanessa Joyce kay 98 or 99, basta almost perfect! Unya ang na 2nd best na score na dayon was in the 60's. Layo ra gyud kaayo'g gap. From then on, she achieved almost legendary status sa tibuok skwelahan. They all knew she was in a league of her own.

It is so amazing that everyone in her family is an achiever. So remarkable.

I am very proud of this beautiful Boholana.

Kuyawa pood no? Its amazing that there are people out there who are that naturally smart, kanang photogenic memory jud. Beautiful in mind and body, jud no?

Much respect to Dr. Dr. Vanessa Joyce Matuod Evardone-Astilero.

Excessive sweat glands of the armpits are known as axillary hyperhidrosis, and the anatomy of its removal is seen below:

A 'cure' of axillar hyperhidrosis is when the T2 and T3 sympathetic nerve ganglion are removed. Though its permanent removal relieves excess sweating, the body's need to maintain homeostasis remains thesame. And since the the sweat glands in the armpits, which normally sweat in order to releave excess heat in the body, are removed, then the body's other sweat glands in the pubic region, forehead etc will work harder in order to maintain internal homeostasis.

As a result, people who have corrective-axillary hypderhidrosis surgery usually complain about excessive sweaty groins, legs, back, face, feet etc. Nothing is ever a true 'cure'. Theres always a setback to every surgical operation. That is why many physicians don't recommend going under the knife...it is irreversible.

Mike,

Im am sincerely sorry for your deep, painful loss. Please know that we are thinking of you and praying for you and your family. Ayaw lang pa sad sad kalingaw dinha, pre, kai ma sakit imung dughan. You have so much to look forward to, my dear friend, so many beautiful faces who look forward to seeing you. You're Papa will always be with you, pre, even tho you cannot see him or hear him and touch him physically, he is always there with you. Naa man siya sa imung heart, pre. Dili man jud bungol ang ginoo sa luha sa tawo. I know this special poem that i always keep since i lost my Lola Nating back in 1998. And whenever i miss her so dearly, i read it and feel her presence again. Pre, know that we are here for you.

In Memory of You

I find an old photograph
and see your smile.
As I feel your presence anew,
I am filled with warmth
and my heart remembers love.

I read an old card
sent many years ago
during a time of turmoil and confusion.
The soothing words written then
still caress my spirit
and bring me peace.

I remember who you used to be
the laughter we shared
and wonder what you have become.
Where are you now,
Where did you go,
When the body is left behind
and the spirit is released to fly?

Perhaps you are the morning bird
singing joyfully at sunrise,
or the butterfly that dances
so carelessly on the breeze
or the rainbow of colors
that brightens a stormy sky
or the fingers of afternoon mist
delicately reaching over the mountains
or the final few rays of the setting sun
lighting up the skies
edging the clouds with a magical glow.

I miss your being
but I feel your presence,
In whatever form you choose to take,
however you now choose to be.

Your spirit has become for me
a guardian angel on high
guiding, advising, and watching over me.

I remember you.
You are with me
and I am not afraid.

Introduce Yourself / Re: How Is Your Day?
November 12, 2007, 11:25:07 AM
My whole day was spent in the laboratory. In fact I'm still in the lab right now, as I've been here since 8AM this morning (took a break to get dinner and attend mass at 6:30PM). The stress of finishing this research and my duties as a Teacher's Assistant for my professor is getting to me. Maybe its because its getting closer to the end of the semester, nonetheless, I got really annoyed earlier today when one of my students who helped me in the lab. **note that the lab that I work in is the physiology/anatomy/microbiology lab, which is highly sterilized due to the types of viruses, bacteria and cadavers inside the lab setting** Anyways, I had two students work for me, as part of their independent study, i deliberately told Alicia (one of the students) to becareful in taking out the treponema pallidum out of the cold freezer--due to its infectious material. She, knowing full well of what I told them (and I am very strict in the lab area) grabbed the tray of T. pallidum without laytex gloves, her white lab coat wasn't tied properly, and as a result, when walking to the lab bench where i was preparing test tube samples, she accidently lost control of the tray and half of the contents broke on the ground and spilled over the whole floor. My reaction was swift and outright. Okay for those who do not know what Treponema pallidum is, it is a bacterial spirochete which is responsible for the manifestation of syphilis and is extremely infective. I ran to the site and immediately rebuked the student and told her to immediately go to the emergency bathroom and shower. I had to call the infectious disease control department to clean up the mess and had to quarantine the area. Immediately told Alicia to go to the ER to make sure that the bacterium samples didnt' get into her squamous and columnar epithelium (dermal cavity)--i just found out today around 5PM that she was negative for syphilis, which was a sigh of relief on my part. I however had to report the case to Professor Kleinschmit and Ostrofsky, which didn't help at all. I tried, truly did try to be lenient with students who work under me in the lab, but this incident is one of the reasons why I am so sterile in the work place--due to the total embarassment that I went through today, I failed Alicia in her lab portion, and now do not allow underclassmen to work with me on weekends (which i used to allow for extra-credit opportunities).

Outside of the class, I am very jovial and open minded, but when it is in the work place i am quite the stern and serious kind of individual who does not tolerate inadequacy. How could she have forgotten to put on her gloves and hold the tray with both hands when I explained to these students of lab protocol and safety procedures? One thing that I cannot stand, particularly in the work place, is idiocy. I have little to no patience for it.

Ah..

Do you think i was too harsh? Was i justified?
#51209
That is true. You remind me what Dr. Ostrofsky and I were talking about this past weekend, 'te. We were in the Allegheny Forest Park Reserve collecting blue jays, robins and crows--and we happened to strike a rather interesting conversation that I dont think i'll ever forget. We talked about the progression of science, particularly biology and the history of medicine. One thing that he told me that our society's scientific progress has made huge leaps and bounds--from the discovery of the bacterium, the viral nature, genetic codets, neural processes etc--all of which have been made known in the 20th century alone. Science is ever changing, he made it known, as when he was a student in my position--biology was once known as 'zoology', which made us laugh--discerning the age of my professor, lol. But he and I had such a warm conversation as we sat on top of a hill in the Allegheny Forest--looking around the vastness of the evergreens and maplewoods. "Before you and I were born, all of this was here, and after you and I and our successors, all of this will be here--the only difference will be the techniques scientists in the future will use. We all have one thing in common that links us with history and it is our intrinsic need to discover and understand our surroundings." Mao jud, and tinuud jud what Dr. Ostrofsky said. Science is ever changing, in all reality, the concept of science is merely a social construct; a manifestation of our race's specific need to understand the scientific processes of our surroundings.

I do agree with my professor in that years after I am long dead, scientists will look back at my generation and discuss the 'old techniques' that we use. The very same way as we, of the present, study the development of natural science (bio, chem, physics, neuroscience) of say the 18th, 19th and 20th century.
#51210
Right now, I am in the biology research lab all by myself doing work; its 9:40 PM right now and just finished preparing sulfuric acid in 80 moles of strength for my students tomorrow in ecology lab. Reading this thread just really intrigued me, that out of all the continuum of animals in this world, we are the only ones who wish to understand and unravel the complexities of science. Why we are so determined to find out why and how things work; per se right now i just finished preparing 50 45 ml test tubes for tomorrow's experiment; which involves examining the tissues of avian species which my professor and i collected this past weekend (part of the lab portion for tomorrow)--why did I do this? To understand the functions of of the cells, and the test tubes will be used to examine the protein nature of these cells (endodermal) vis a vis electrophoresis. To understand the proteinic nature of dermal cells and its layers; how charges (negative, positive charges) affect movement processes--(neuromuscular, muscular, orthotics etc). Amazing no?

And to think, scientists make it a career choice to study biology, chemistry, biochemistry in order to understand and have a fuller grasp of our world around us. And to think, before our ability to even understand such complex processes, everything--all of it--has been here.

Humbling, in my honest opinion.

2. To get accepted to most of the 15 medical schools i applied to; and choose the best one.

3. Finish my senior research composition in time by March 15, 2008.

Thought about my dad today and just realized that the death anniversary of his father, my Papa Titing is coming up. Its very sad to think about it, but my dad lost his father when he was only 21 years old (one year younger than me--and never got to see or talk to his dad during his wedding day or when either his children were born)--and brought me to tears today when I was in church celebrating mass. To think that it was around my age when my father lost his own dad-- surviving such a deep loss. I cannot even begin to imagine or comprehend.

This song is in tribute to my beloved papa Titing who was so jovial in life, happy, hard working, and taken by the Lord in such a young age of 45. This is for you, Mr. Rustico Aray Lucino (Papa Titing).  :'(

SANTIAGO, Chile - The Ibero-American summit ended on an unusually heated note Saturday, when an angry verbal spat culminated with the king of Spain telling Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to "shut up."

Chavez, the outspoken leftist leader who called President Bush "the devil" on the floor of the United Nations last year, triggered the exchange by repeatedly referring to former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar as a "fascist."

Aznar, a conservative and a close Bush ally who backed the U.S.-led war in Iraq, "is a fascist," Chavez said in a speech to leaders from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. "Fascists are not human. A snake is more human."

Spain's current socialist prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, responded during his own allotted time by urging Chavez to be more diplomatic in his words and respect other leaders despite political differences.

"Former President Aznar was democratically elected by the Spanish people and was a legitimate representative of the Spanish people," he said, eliciting applause from the gathered heads of state.

Chavez repeatedly tried to interrupt, but his microphone was off.

Spanish King Juan Carlos, seated next to Zapatero, angrily turned to Chavez and said, "Why don't you shut up?"

The Venezuelan leader did not immediately respond but later used time ceded to him by his close ally Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega to answer Zapatero's speech.

"I do not offend by telling the truth," he said. "The Venezuelan government reserves the right to respond to any aggression, anywhere, in any space and in any manner."

Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage backed Chavez, saying that "a president's legitimacy stems not only from his election by voters ... he must also be legitimate in the exercise of power."

Just enjoy the forum, and don't take things too literally, this is a place to make friends, make regards, release stress and have colorful and progressive debates. If there are problems with people negating one another vis-a-vis personal attacks, which has happened in the past, then there should be proper means to talk to that individual. People in here need to solve their own problems personally and on a individual basis so as that not everyone in the forum gets involved. Grievances on both sides are tantamount, and should be addressed via PM or email outside of the forum posts. That is my view on the discourse of the situation.

In regards to the toink and pak-pak synthesis, who cares. Its just there. When one becomes too consumed on their ratings---that defeats the purpose. Remember that you cant please everyone. Hold your own ground, yet also be open minded to take in new ideas and recognize your mistakes when addressed about that. For example, I have made multiple mistakes in this site, and have been told by members about it---and I corrected it, thereby learning in the process. In the broader scheme of things, its all about respect. Respecting everyone else's moral responsibility, character and integrity as well as your own innate character.

Be mutual. Be positive. Remember, we're family.

Question and Answer / Re: What if you die today
November 12, 2007, 01:57:27 AM
Humans, despite of our racial, ethno and lingual difference, are purely similar. All of us, despite our geographic differences experience the same psychological anxieties, fears, dreams, yearning to succeed, intuitive traits to question our surroundings, and for the most part (though there are those who deny the existence of a greater force), are subject to religious doctrine that provides a moral backing in times of need and of comfort. In life, we are so amalgamated to stress, to deal with it, though  it comes in multiple forms--per se--giving birth, raising children, working and providing the source of sustenance for dependents, providing physical and psychological care to friends, family etc. All of these  activities manifests some sort of stress, which we both detest, fear, love, get used to. The journey of life, which differs from person to person, enables all of us to experience these kinds of feelings, and though we complain certain aspects of our lives--in the trueness of it all, we do accept and enjoy it (either subconsciously or outright). We fear death because we fear the alienation of our joys, happiness, yearnings, needs, and all the factors that enables endorphinitic effects, positive conditionings (laughing with family, hugging your child, husband, wife, mother, grandfather, grandmother, eating and making jokes as you laugh, etc). Death is a total loss of such experiences, it is complete and final. There is no return from death, despite one's dreams and innate want and need to see loved ones again.

In the medical and biological field, death is final. Decomposition of the body, which is the manifestation of the absoluteness of death, tells us that though we humans as apex species, cannot explain how so much emotions we experience in life, faith etc, can be so totally removed. Deleted, so to say, in the phase of death. It is a natural fear, a natural state, that not only humans experience, but all other animals in different genus, phylum and kingdoms in God's green earth also experience. Do not carabaos cry and panic as they are fatally bitten by crocodiles? Do not lion cubs scream before death when they are mauled by hyenas in the absence of their mother and lion pack? Do not birds twitch before they starve to death when their mother and father do not come back after gathering sustenance? Yet, despite nature's cruelness at times, death is part of life. Just as we, as people, need to rest after a hard days work in the farm, in the hospital, in the pharmacy, in the painting studio, in the bank, in the engineering firm; so to our bodies. In our lives, our body constantly is in work, our heart pumps over 60 gallons of blood throughout our system every day and tirelessly since its formation in the womb, our lungs pump air tirelessly in in order to provide oxygenated blood throughout the cardiothoracic, respiratory, and nervous system; the same applies for our liver, kidneys, gall bladder, prostate, brain etc.  An organ, organism, population can only operate for so long--we are finite beings, not infinite. We are not God or Gods, despite our yearning to live forever, to experience continuously---God did not create and plan our bodies for that intended purpose. Just as we were conceived in the womb and given life in birth, so too is it natural for us to experience death. It is a necessary part of life.

Fear of death is anxiety (or emotional recoil) experienced in anticipation of the event. Such fearful anticipation is basically the result of a failure to observe the death process in others and to study that process through systematic education and self-observation.Death is a necessary, purposeful, and (ultimately) benign psycho-physical process. It is similar to the process of giving birth, except that it occurs to both males and females. As in the case of preparing for childbirth, you must study the death process bodily and through observing others. Above all, tension and fear must be relaxed during the death process (as it must be in the case of a woman in childbirth). You must relax and release, as when going to sleep â€" in a feeling of deep trust, love, and surrender to the Divine Reality on Which the process depends.

Question and Answer / Re: What if you die today
November 12, 2007, 01:01:38 AM
As I think of it, if one knew he or she was going to die, why worry? Death is part of the cosmic order that surrounds all living lifeforms. As we were created, we live, so too shall we meet our eventual demise; the only asymmetrical factor is the condition and time of that demise. Death is mandated by providence, and when we perish, we should accept that fact. Fear not, for death is the final release. The final state, where no pain, anger, distrust, stress afflict the mind. It is the state of nothingness..

November 12, 2007, 12:56:55 AM
Heaven...is a state of mind. Either it is real or completely man-made in thought, one thing is for sure, it has led to the plethora of literary works, religious thought and morality in the progress of human civilization. It is the rapacious concept that has guided the lives of many in their lifetime, manifested as a social and psychological need.

LoL, as a Filipino-American and one who is educated in a prestigious and expensive liberal arts college, of which has been funded in its entirety by college loans, and my parents, I know full well of the hard work Filipinos do to send their children to college, and professional schools. Filipino men and Filipino women work hard, and will do anything for the success and betterment of their children, either by sending them to medical school, law school, pharmacy, nursing, engineering, graduate school etc., is clearly manifested in the data from the U.S Census Bureau. To those in here who look down on the Filipino and the Filipino-American community, DO YOU know that the Filipino-American community is the richest Asian-American ethnic group in the United States? And the 2nd richest ethnic group throughout the United States? The average income of Filipino-Americans comes at $65,700, while the average White-American income is at $48,784. Filipino-Americans make more than the Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Pakistani, Korean etc ethnic groups because of the reputable work ethic of our people. The Filipino-American community (which numbers at 2.5 million) owns over 125,000 businesses here in the United States, and employs over 132,000 American citizens in those business, thereby generating an income of over $14 Billion for the US economy. Of these businesses, 38.6% are health care and social assistance oriented and produces 39.3% of the collective Filipino-owned business revenue. No other ethnic group in the United States, particularly recent immigrants can boast such successes as the Filipino-American.

To those who look down on the Filipino-American community, do you know that a good majority of medical students in the United States and in the Caribbean are of Filipino decent? Do you know that almost 12% of medical residents are Filipino? Quite an impressive accomplishment for an ethnic group that numbers only 2.5 Million out of the US population of 308 Million. So the next time you go to a hospital in the United States due to peripheral neuropathy, or complaining about myocardial infarction, urinary tract infection, colorectal pains, respiratory pains or are involved in a trauma accident; most likely you will be treated by 1. A Filipino physician and cared for by 2. Filipino nurses. So the next time you try to say something negative, watch what you say. And realize that those who will end up saving your life might be the very people who you looked down on. Now wouldn't that be ironic?  ;)

On the contrary, instead of looking down of Filipinos for coming to the United States, one should be grateful for the massive contributions our people have done for the US economy, and our innumerable contributions to the US Healthcare industry, of which is boasted to be the best in the world. No other immigrant group has made so much, succeeded so much in such a little amount of time. You know why? Because Filipinos are highly skilled, intelligent, hard working, and perserverant people who do not cower to those who try to intimidate us. It is the Filipino who rises to the occasion and becomes the physician, lawyer, professor, pharmacist, engineer, chemist, business owner, nurse, therapist in the U.S echelon.

To those who look down on Filipino-Americans, please take a look at the US Census Bureau 2007 data sheet:

The following comes from the U.S Census Bureau 2007.
http://www.census.gov/prod/2007pubs/acs-05.pdf

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ethnicity:       Household Income:
1.     Asian Indian  $68,771
2      Filipino         $65,700
3.     Chinese       $57,433
4.     Japanese     $53,763
5.     Koreans       $43,195
6.     Whites         $48,784
7.     Total US Population     $44,684

The Filipino community possesses an economic well-being with a majority belonging in the upper middle class. Well representation of Filipinos in service-oriented professions such as education and health care sustains the group's economic well-being. When compared to other Asian American groups, Filipino Americans had the highest median household income, exceeding that of non-Hispanic white households, and the U.S. general population.

Among Overseas Filipinos, Filipino Americans are the largest senders of US dollars to the Philippines. In 2005, their combined dollar remittances reached a record-high of almost $6.5 billion dollars. In 2006, Filipino Americans sent more than $8 billion, which represents 57% of the total amount received by the Philippines.

Many Filipino Americans are business-owners, particularly in the field of small business. Filipino Americans own restaurants, while others are in the medical, dental, and optical fields. Several are in the telemarketing business. Over 125,000 businesses are Filipino-owned, according to the 2002 US Economic Census.

These firms employ more than 132,000 people and generate an almost $14.2 billion in revenue. Of these businesses, 38.6% are health care and social assistance oriented and produces 39.3% of the collective Filipino-owned business revenue. California had the most number of these businesses followed by Hawai?i, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Florida, and Texas.

At the point of retirement, Filipino Americans tend to head back to the Philippines, because of the significance of the dollar in the Philippine economy. Current Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has encouraged the Filipino American community business entrepreneurs to invest back home to promote more job-creation in the Philippines.

Hey em, great post and very deep retrospective thoughts. For me, one of the best times I had in the Philippines was probably in my childhood, back in the early 90s (around 1991) when I went to Panglao with my Mama Luz (my dad's mother) and the rest of the family---we were eating and it started to rain--haha and she told me and my sister to 'keep on eating, sayang ang kan-unon' hahaha! God I miss her so much. To think about it, the places in Bohol are secondary to me, its my family over there that I long to see again.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- Turkey's president said Tuesday his country "has decided" how to proceed against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq and informed the United States.

The U.S. and Iraq have been pressing Turkey to avoid a major cross-border attack on Kurdish Workers' Party, or PKK, rebel bases in northern Iraq out of fear such an incursion would bring instability to what has been one of the calmest areas in Iraq.

President Abdullah Gul did not specify what decision had been made regarding an attack, but made clear that Turkey feels that the PKK is leading to instability in the region itself.

"Iraq's stability cannot be limited to fighting terrorism in Baghdad or other regions," he said. "The terrorist organization in the north is also disrupting Iraq's stability."

The comments come the day after President Bush met in Washington with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and promised him that the United States would share military intelligence in the hunt for PKK rebels.

Gul said part of Erdogan's goal in his trip was to share with the United States the decision that the country has made on how to deal with the rebels.

"Turkey had made its preparations and had decided what to do on the issue before the prime minister left," he said.

PKK rebels have killed more than 40 Turks in hit-and-run attacks over the past month, mainly soldiers, raising the public pressure on Erdogan to retaliate.

Tens of thousands of Turkish troops are poised at the southeastern border with Iraq, and experts speculate that if there is to be an attack this year, it must come soon before the winter weather descends upon the mountainous region making military action nearly impossible.

Both the U.S. and the European Union have labeled the PKK a terrorist organization, and Bush called the rebels "an enemy of Turkey, a free Iraq and the United States."

In addition to White House worries that a Turkish incursion into Iraq could bring instability to the area, it also is concerned an incursion could set a precedent for other countries, such as Iran, that have conflicts with Kurdish rebels.

Yet, when asked about the possibility of Turkey attacking Iraq, Bush dismissed the question as hypothetical.

He tried instead to assure Turkey that the U.S. is providing support.

"It's fine to speculate about what may or may not happen," Bush said. "But nothing can happen until you get good intelligence. We need to know where people are hiding, and we need to know what they're doing."

Erdogan said his government has the authority to mount an incursion into Iraq if necessary. But he gave no further indication of his intentions.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (CNN) -- A Palestinian state alongside Israel is within reach, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Monday after talks with the Palestinian president and Israeli prime minister.

Rice said a proposed summit in Annapolis, Maryland, later this year can be a "launching pad" toward a two-state solution.

"We appear to be on course to prepare seriously for continuous ongoing negotiations," said Rice, who appeared at a press briefing in the West Bank with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. She met Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who underscored the importance of the Annapolis summit in a speech.

"Annapolis will be the jumping-off point for continued serious and in-depth negotiations which will not avoid any issue or ignore any division which has clouded our relations with the Palestinian people for many years," Olmert said.

Rice said there are "very clear signs" Arab neighbors want the process to succeed. "I can really say without fear of contradiction that everybody's goal is the creation" of a Palestinian state, she said.

Rice's trip is her third visit to the Middle East since mid-September, indicative of the Bush administration's efforts to jump-start the dormant peace process before the president's term ends.

Abbas said he was "encouraged" by Olmert's statements Sunday and said he's seeking an accord that will lead to a solution on final status issues such as Jerusalem, settlements, water and refugees.

"We are serious to use this opportunity to reach this historical peace which would lead to the establishment of the Palestinian state and its capital East Jerusalem, that will live side by side with the state of Israel," said Abbas.

No date has been set for the Annapolis summit because both sides have yet to reach an agreement on the mutual vision they hope to present at the conference.

Olmert, who opposed the Oslo Accords in the early '90s, said an opportunity for peace talks exists "because it's time."

"Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, and Salaam Fayyad, its prime minister, publicly state -- without hesitation and despite the inherent difficulties of the complex relations within Palestinian society -- that they want to live with us in peace. This is an opportunity. It should be taken," Olmert said.

LONDON, England (AP) -- Stock markets in Asia fell Thursday, following on another big drop on Wall Street as investors tried to quantify the size of a fallout from the global credit crisis.

Markets in Europe were mixed as interest rates in Britain and Europe went unchanged, though European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said the developments that put price stability at risk will be monitored "very closely.'

Japan's benchmark index sank 2 percent, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong tumbled 3.2 percent. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 4.9 percent, its biggest one-day decline in four months. Shares also fell in Australia, India, South Korea and the Philippines.

Declines in Europe were moderate, with France's CAC-40 index down 0.6 percent to 5,649.35. Germany's DAX Index was up 0.3 percent to 7,824.48. The U.K.'s FTSE-100 index gained 0.2 percent to 6,389.00.

Both the European Central Bank and the Bank of England held their benchmark rates steady, as expected, despite some calls to follow the lead of the United States, which cut rates twice in a six-week span.

U.S. stocks were mixed Thursday, a day after the Dow Jones industrial average tumbled more than 350 points, the third precipitous drop in a month.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.03 percent to 13,304.33, while Standard & Poor's 500 Index climbed 0.27 percent to 1,479.60. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.96 percent to 27,22.31.

But Claire Collingwood, a trader at CMC Markets in London, said some U.S. economic news expected later Thursday could affect the market direction.

Investors in Asia, as is usual, reacted strongly to the U.S. decline on Wednesday.

"There has been renewed concern about the U.S. subprime loan problem amid reports that losses at U.S. and European financial institutions are expanding, which increases uncertainty," said Koji Takeuchi, senior economist at Mizuho Research Institute in Tokyo.

Jitters have grown since Citigroup Inc. said Sunday it needed to take an additional $8 billion to $11 billion in writedowns. Markets also are skittish about weakness in the U.S. dollar, soaring oil prices and a record loss at General Motors Corp.

Investors fear global markets could repeat a plunge earlier this year, when the subprime problems first came to the attention of the broader market.

In Japan, investors dumped financial and real estate shares such as Mizuho Financial and Mitsubishi Estate. The Nikkei 225 index fell 325.11 points, or 2.02 percent, to 15,771.57 points. A steadily strengthening yen against the dollar also hurt exporters like Toyota Motor Corp. and Sony Corp.

Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng index dropped 3.2 percent, to 28,760.2, with property shares falling sharply.

In mainland China, the market was hurt by declines overnight in American Depositary Receipts of large Chinese traded in New York.
advertisement

"The sharp decline in ADRs in the U.S. has exerted selling pressure on their counterpart shares listed here," said Chen Huiqin, an analyst at Huatai Securities.

The drop shows how China's still largely insular market is becoming increasingly linked to overseas markets, despite limits on foreign investment in mainland shares and on overseas stock purchases by Chinese.

World Daily News / Musharraf sets election deadline
November 09, 2007, 02:34:15 AM
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Under intense international pressure to restore democracy in Pakistan, President Gen. Pervez Musharraf announced Thursday that parliamentary elections will be held by Feb. 15 and restated his pledge to step down as the country's military leader.

"I am on record as saying these things so this is not an issue with me," Musharraf said, speaking after his meeting with the National Security Council.

Elections, originally set for mid-January, had been suspended -- along with the country's constitution -- after Musharraf declared a state of emergency on Saturday. His opponents, the target of widespread arrests and detentions, say it amounts to martial law in Pakistan.

The state of emergency will remain in place for at least a month, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League, told CNN Thursday. In addition, Pakistan's government Thursday began lifting the media blackout imposed as part of the emergency order, allowing CNN and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) back on the air.

The White House called Musharraf's announcement a positive first step.

"We think it is a good thing that President Musharraf has clarified the election date for the Pakistani people," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said

Musharraf is under tremendous pressure by the United States and other foreign allies to end the state of emergency and set a date for elections.

President Bush said that he delivered that message personally to Musharraf during a Wednesday phone call.

"My message was very plain, very easy to understand, and that is, the United States wants you to have the elections as scheduled and take your uniform off," Bush said.

But Musharraf's opposition said Thursday's announcement is not enough.

"The general opposition in this country want those (Supreme Court) judges to be reinstated," opposition leader Imran Khan told CNN International. "Just lifting the emergency (order) is not good enough for us."

"We intend to resist him (Musharraf) as long as he does not reinstate the chief justice," said Khan, who is in hiding after escaping from house arrest earlier this week.

Musharraf dismissed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and the rest of the Supreme Court shortly after Saturday's emergency declaration, and replaced them with his supporters.

Khan and other opposition leaders accuse Musharraf of imposing the emergency declaration as a "power grab" by avoiding the top court's ruling that would have nullified the parliamentary vote that gave him a third term as president.

The newly installed court is expected to approve the vote, paving the way for Musharraf to take the oath of office.

Before the emergency order, he had been scheduled to be sworn in on Nov. 15 and had pledged to step down as military chief after that date.

Opposition leader and former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto expressed concern about Musharraf's announcement.

In enforcing the emergency order, Pakistani forces have arrested thousands of opposition leaders and banned broadcasts from the independent media.

Five opposition politicians -- including the head of the National Party -- were charged with treason Thursday in Karachi, a government official told CNN.

Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party said Thursday that more than 800 of its workers and leaders were arrested in overnight raids, in addition to 400 picked up a day earlier.

Bhutto, who returned to Pakistan last month ahead of elections, plans to lead a massive march in Rawalpindi, the base of Pakistan's military. She is urging all opposition parties to put aside their differences and join the rally.

Despite their criticism of Musharraf, Bhutto, Khan, and other Pakistani opposition leaders are scrambling to capitalize on the international outrage over the Pakistani leader's move.

Khan -- who is head of the Movement for Justice party which campaigns for an independent judiciary -- criticized Bhutto for not calling on Musharraf to reinstate the Supreme Court justices.

"That's the most significant thing," he told CNNI. "Until she asks for the judges to be reinstated at all costs, we would not consider her the real opposition."
advertisement

He said her role is "dubious" because she had been involved in power-sharing talks with Musharraf, which she said have since been suspended since the emergency declaration.

That, Khan said, may be why "she's been allowed to roam around while all of us are hiding, or in jail."

TUUSULA, Finland (CNN) -- Flags in Finland were flying at half-staff Thursday and government workers observed three minutes of silence a day after a teenager opened fire at his high school, killing eight people before fatally turning the gun on himself.

Police probing Finland's first known school shooting said Thursday that a picture was emerging of the gunman as a lonely, antisocial 18-year-old who acted alone and left a suicide note saying good-bye to his family, but that his motive was unclear.

Police said the victims -- all of whom were from the school -- were apparently picked at random. Six were students, one was the 61-year-old school headmistress and one was the 42-year-old school nurse.

Ten other people were wounded in the attack.

Jokela High School was closed for the rest of the week, but some of the 460 students gathered there overnight and into Thursday, crying and lighting candles for the victims.

Police identified the gunman as Pekka-Eric Auvinen, a senior at the high school in the southern Finnish town of Tuusula, about 30 miles north of Helsinki. Auvinen died at a Helsinki hospital late Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police said all of his victims had multiple gunshot wounds, most to the upper body and head. Police said they found 69 shells and more than 320 unused bullets at the scene.

Chief Inspector Tero Haapala told Finnish news agency STT that Auvinen was determined to kill as many people as he could before turning the pistol on himself. Haapala said everything suggested Auvinen wanted the massacre to be as spectacular as possible, according to STT. Video Watch Auvinen fire weapons in video from his Web page »

At a news conference Thursday, police said Auvinen had sprayed a flammable liquid, possibly lamp oil, on the walls of the school and that he tried but failed to light it.

Students and police painted a picture of panic at the school during the attack, which started around 11:45 a.m. (4:45 a.m. ET). Students said that the principal ordered everyone to stay in their classrooms, but many thought it was just a drill.

Students said that, as word spread that a gunman was moving through the school, they were told to barricade themselves in classrooms, lie on the floor down and wait for help. For 40 minutes, many lay in fear as the gunman moved through all three floors of the school.

Police said that, when they arrived just before noon (5a.m. ET), they found students trying to scramble out of windows; officers broke down doors to help students escape.

Police said that, when they first made contact with Auvinen, they told him to drop his gun, but he responded with fire. Fearful of hitting others, police did not fire back, they said.

Police said they found Auvinen a little more than an hour later, just after 1p.m. (6a.m. ET).

A search of his house turned up books and the gunman's writings, which suggest he had "very strong opinions against society," police said.

Authorities were also investigating notes and videos Auvinen had posted on YouTube, the online video-sharing site. Most of the videos indicated a fascination with violence and some hinted at the massacre itself.

Hours before the shooting, a video titled "Jokela High School Massacre --11/7/2007" was posted on the YouTube site by someone who identified himself as Auvinen.

In rambling text posted on the site two weeks before the shooting, Auvinen called himself "a cynical existentialist, anti-human humanist, anti-social social-Darwinist, realistic idealist and god-like atheist."

"I am prepared to fight and die for my cause," he wrote. "I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection."

The Jokela High School clip was one of about 80 videos posted on the site by Auvinen. In the video, a picture of the school disintegrates to reveal an image of a man resembling Auvinen against a red background, pointing a gun at the screen.

The clip was accompanied by the track "Stray Bullet" by the rock band KMFDM, whose lyrics were also quoted by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the students behind the Columbine High School massacre of 1999 in the United States.

The YouTube site also included video of the Columbine shootings and the 1993 Waco siege in the United States, the 1995 sarin gas attack in Tokyo and bombs falling on Baghdad during the 2003 invasion.

Other video clips included Nazi war criminals.

Police said they had not known about the videos before the shootings. YouTube took them down within hours of the shooting.

The gunman, who had no criminal record, obtained a license for the weapon on October 19, four months after his 18th birthday -- the legal age limit for owning a firearm in Finland.

He practiced sharp-shooting as a hobby at a shooting range in Finland, police said.

Finland enjoys a strong tradition of hunting and has a high proportion of gun ownership, with 2 million firearms owned in a nation of 5 million people.

SINGAPORE (AP) -- Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi said in a statement released by a U.N. envoy on Thursday that she is ready to cooperate with Myanmar's military rulers to pursue national reconciliation.

"In the interest of the nation I stand ready to cooperate with the government in order to make this process of dialogue a success," Suu Kyi said in the statement released by the envoy, Ibrahim Gambari.

Gambari met Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest, for an hour before his departure from Myanmar Thursday. He flew to Singapore, where he read out her statement at a news conference. He is supposed to return to U.N. headquarters in New York by Monday.

"We now have a process going which will lead to a dialogue between the government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," Gambari told reporters. "Such a dialogue is key instrument in promoting national reconciliation and the goals of peace and democracy and full respect for human rights in Myanmar."

Myanmar's military government announced earlier that it would allow Suu Kyi to meet her party's officials Friday, the first such meeting in more than three years.

Aung Kyi, the government minister in charge of relations with Suu Kyi, will see her first to make arrangements for the meeting, state media said.

The announcement on state radio and television news Thursday came hours after Gambari left Myanmar saying he had made progress in his six-day mission to promote a dialogue between the junta and Suu Kyi.

Suu Kyi has been detained since May 2003, and has not seen fellow executive members of her National League for Democracy since May 2004.

The government invited Gambari to return to Myanmar, and he expects to do so in the next few weeks, said a statement posted on the Web site of the U.N. Information Center for Myanmar at the conclusion of the envoy's visit.

"The sooner such a dialogue can start, the better for Myanmar," the statement said.

The Suu Kyi statement released by Gambari was the first such message from her since she was detained, and would be the first chance to gauge her reaction to September's bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators and the subsequent U.N. mediation efforts.

In her statement, Suu Kyi thanked the United Nations for its "unwavering support" for national reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Myanmar.

"In this time of vital need for democratic solidarity and national unity, it is my duty to give constant and serious consideration to the interests and opinions of as broad a range of political organizations and forces as possible, in particular those of our ethnic nationality races," Suu Kyi said.

"To that end I am committed to pursue the path of dialogue constructively and invite the government and all relevant parties to join me in this spirit," she said.
