The Haig whisky distilling dynasty can rightfully lay claim to be the oldest Scotch whisky distillery, having being active distillers for over 300 years. The first recording of Haig distilling was in 1655, when Robert Haig was summoned to appear before the Kirk Session for working his still on the Sabbath. He had established a farm at Throsk, Stirlingshire, in 1627, and this is taken to be the entry date of the Haig’s into distilling. The unique three-sided pinched decanter was the first three-sided bottle to be registered as a trade mark in the US. -- http://listverse.com/

Vampire bat virus implicated in death of a man in the United States
By the CNN Wire Staff
August 13, 2011 -- Updated 0023 GMT (0823 HKT)

(CNN) -- Federal health authorities reported Friday the first report of human rabies in the United States linked to a vampire bat rabies virus.

The incident occurred a year ago, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a case of rabies in a 19-year-old migrant worker who was hospitalized in Louisiana with inflammation of the brain, the agency said in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The man had developed neurologic symptoms at the end of July, 2010, shortly after arriving in the United States from Mexico. After a day of work on a sugarcane plantation in Louisiana, he sought medical care for fatigue, left shoulder pain, and left hand numbness -- symptoms that were initially blamed on exertion. But his symptoms continued and he was sent to a hospital in New Orleans.

There, an examination revealed hypersensitivity of the left shoulder, weakness of the left hand, underactive reflexes, and drooping of the left eyelid.

Doctors suspected Guillain-Barre syndrome, a syndrome in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves, or meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes covering the brain.

Over the next few days, as the patient's condition deteriorated, doctors began to suspect -- based on the worsening symptoms -- that he had rabies.

On August 20, that diagnosis was confirmed by testing; the patient died the next day.

Post-mortem tests revealed he had been infected with a vampire bat rabies virus, the CDC said.

Rabies virus causes progressive brain inflammation that is almost always fatal if treatment is not begun before the onset of symptoms.

The man's mother said he had been bitten by a bat in July in Mexico but had not sought treatment. Though bats are the primary source of human rabies in the United States, this is the first reported death from a vampire bat rabies virus in the United States, the disease agency said.

Bat rabies virus has been associated with most indigenously acquired human rabies cases in the United States for some 20 years. During the past decade, vampire bats have become the leading cause of human rabies in Latin America.

The CDC urged doctors caring for patients with acute progressive inflammation of the brain to consider rabies as a possible cause, and to recognize that recent travel to a country with rabies could be a risk factor.

Since 2000, eight (25%) of the 32 human rabies cases reported in the United States were acquired from exposures abroad -- two of them from Mexico.

Though vampire bats are found only in Latin America, their range may be expanding into the United States due to climate change, the report said.

Bats have been implicated in the transmission of a number of infectious diseases. -- http://edition.cnn.com/

MANILA, Philippines - Japan's Haruhiko Kuroda has been unanimously reelected as President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) by its board of governors, the Manila-based development lender said on Thursday.

Kuroda has been ADB president since Feb 2005, and his new five-year term will run from Nov. 24, 2011. He is the eighth president of the ADB; all have been Japanese.

"While countries in Asia and the Pacific have made remarkable progress since I first joined ADB over six years ago, we must not forget that the region is still home to hundreds of millions of the world's poorest people," Kuroda said in a statement.

Ouch: The distressed model tries to pull the snake off her but it has latched on to her tightly

She let out a high-pitched scream, as did a voice off camera who appeared to be directing the shoot.

An assistant rushed in to help her pull the snake off and after a few seconds of struggle the creature released its grip.

The peroxide-blonde model was rushed to a nearby hospital and given a tetanus shot.

However, the snake wasn't so lucky and died from silicone poisoning.

... it reacts by sinking its teeth into the model's left breast

Too close for comfort: Ms Fox decides to kiss the snake but it seems to think she is being over familiar....

The B-list model and actress initially looked comfortable during the shoot in Tel Aviv, wrapping the huge snake around her legs, waist and neck while doing her best to look sexy.

In a figure hugging red and white striped dress, which revealed maximum cleavage, she gamely tried to take their bonding to the next level by licking the snake's face.

As she maneurvered the animal into position for the 'kiss' Ms Fox loosened her grip on its neck, and after being licked the reptile reacted angrily.

It aimed straight for Fox's prized assets and sunk its teeth deep into her left breast.

It should have been an alluring photoshoot between two of nature's beautiful creatures as a model wrapped herself in a snake.

But surgically enhanced Israeli model Orit Fox got more than she bargained for when the massive boa constrictor took objection to her over familiarity and reacted by biting into her breast.

However, it was the snake who came off worse because, while Ms Fox need a tetanus shot in hospital, the reptile later died from silicone poisoning.

Tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis refers to a lymphadenitis of the cervical lymph nodes associated with tuberculosis. It was previously known as "scrofula".

Scrofula is the term used for tuberculosis of the neck, or, more precisely, a cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy. Scrofula is usually a result of an infection in the lymph nodes, known as lymphadenitis and is most often observed in immunocompromised patients (about 50% of cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy). About 95% of the scrofula cases in adults are caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but only 8% of cases in children. The rest are caused by atypical mycobacterium (Mycobacterium scrofulaceum) or nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). With the stark decrease of tuberculosis in the second half of the 20th century, scrofula became a very rare disease. With the appearance of AIDS, however, it has shown a resurgence, and presently affects about 5% of severely immunocompromised patients. --Wiki

(EIM) (BANAT NEWS)

Museum defies Pope over crucified frog
By Reuters August 28, 2008

An Italian museum on Thursday defied Pope Benedict and refused to remove a modern art sculpture portraying a crucified green frog holding a beer mug and an egg that the Vatican had condemned as blasphemous.

ROME - An Italian museum on Thursday defied Pope Benedict and refused to remove a modern art sculpture portraying a crucified green frog holding a beer mug and an egg that the Vatican had condemned as blasphemous.

The board of the Museion museum in the northern city of Bolzano decided by a majority vote that the frog was a work of art and would stay in place for the remainder of an exhibition.

The wooden sculpture by the late German artist Martin Kippenberger depicts a frog about 130 centimetres high nailed to brown cross and holding a beer mug in one outstretched hand and an egg in another.

Called Zuerst die Fuesse (Feet First), it wears a green loin cloth and is nailed through the hands and the feet in the manner of Jesus Christ. Its green tongue hangs out of its mouth.

Kippenberger’s works have been shown at the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery in London and at the Venice Biennale, and retrospectives are planned in Los Angeles and New York.

Museum officials in the northern bilingual Alto Adige region near the Austrian border said the artist, who died in 1997, considered it a self-portrait illustrating human angst.

Pope Benedict, who is German himself and was recently on holiday not far from Bolzano, obviously did not agree.

The Vatican wrote a letter of support in the pope’s name to Franz Pahl, president of the regional government who opposed the sculpture. Pahl released parts of the letter, which said the work "wounds the religious sentiments of so many people who see in the cross the symbol of God’s love."

Pahl, whose province is heavily Catholic, was so outraged by the sculpture of the pop-eyed amphibian that he went on a hunger strike to demand its removal and had to be taken to hospital during the summer.

"Surely this is not a work of art but a blashphemy and a disgusting piece of trash that upsets many people," Pahl told Reuters by telephone. "This decision to keep the statue there is is totally unacceptable. It is a grave offence to our Catholic population."

Art experts defended the work.

"Art must always be free and the artist should not have any restrictions on freedom of expression," Claudio Strinati, a superindendent for Rome’s state museums, told an Italian newspaper on Thursday. -- http://www.canada.com/topics/news/story.html?id=409e5a8b-26ac-49ec-9c74-ac7119354ac9

We believe, however, that this demand to suppress the show smacks of the religious fascism of the friars of Rizal’s time and certainly unacceptable in the 21st century,” he added.

Tiger

Much like a lion, a tiger is the epitome of strength. The distinctive coloring makes the tiger tattoo a very attractive design. A tiger tattoo seldom looks bad. I haven’t seen a bad one so far.

Kanji

There’s something about Kanji tattoos that makes everyone an instant fan. Every time I see a tattoo consisting of Chinese characters, I usually like it, despite the fact that I have no idea what it means. And most people, even those who own the tat, might be clueless of their tat’s true meaning. Well, as long as the people around you don’t understand it either, there won’t be any problems. Just enjoy the view.

Butterfly

The butterfly tattoo is really popular among the female population. I have yet to see a guy with a butterfly tattoo, but I’m sure they’re out there somewhere. Mariah Carey really made this one very popular during her ‘Butterfly’ days. And it sure clicked.

A butterfly tat can represent beauty, metamorphosis, freedom, happiness, and fragility. And those are elements women can definitely relate with.
