Salamat Calle. Pero dugang pa ani: matud pa sa akong classmate nga graduate sa Leuven, Belgium, mao nay iyang namatikdan nga ang mga Pinoy (or Asians mostly) - dili tanan but kasagaran - are a sight-seeing culture, the Europeans a reading culture (kusog motagad and willing kung istoryahon, pero kung wa gani ka istorya, will take a pocket book out of their backpack or purse and read). Kita daw, bahalag di kasud sa museum or a library, basta lang naay picture sa maong famous building unya apil tas picture, bastante na, kay naa namay ebidensya nga naka anha na ta anang lugara. Morag mga Hapon hehehe! North Americans are close to the European counterparts, they want to know more about the history of such a place and will love to spend longer and quality time on a particular place while also enjoying the sights and trying out the food that's available. But I also noticed how often they (Americans) complain about the price of souvenirs and food. I guess, because it's a lot cheaper for them when they buy them in their own country, while in other places, they try to compete with the world's standard and so appear to be really expensive. Wrong expectation 'ika nga.

But the irony is , they, too, call themselves, or, are still considered tourists. Travelers, on the other hand, for me, are those who love to go camping, hiking, white water rafting, mountain climbing, motor-biking, cruise, spend weeks or months out-of-town driving their RVs, etc. They don't necessarily read or know in-depth the history of a particular spot they visit but they are really traveling!!! And they hardly call themselves tourists.

i totally agree nga kita mga pinoys kusog kaayo mu-posing bahala og kinahanglan og microscope aron makit-an ta basta kay present gyud ta sa picture og ang scenery/building/etc...will this show nga medyo naay pagka-show-off nato??? angkon ko nga i also do this

Travel and Tours / Top Ten Beaches in the Philippines
October 29, 2009, 05:03:06 PM
With more than 7,000 islands comprising the archipelago, it does not come as a surprise that the Philippines has some of the best beaches in Asia, if not the world. Choices vary from the commercialized to the exotic, to the simply breathtaking. Here are the ten best beaches in the Philippines that are definitely worth sunbathing in.

1. BORACAY ISLAND

Characterized by its fine sand and crystal clear waters, Boracay comes as a no-brainer in this list. Currently it is still the most famous and the most visited beach in the country; the destination of foreigners and Filipinos alike during summer. Boracay locals work hard to maintain the island's prestige as the number one summer getaway in the Philippines. Now highly commercialized, the island not only boasts of its beaches, but is also packed with bars, hotels, shopping areas, and other establishments. Boracay satisfies those urbanites who do not want to get away from the conveniences offered by the city, yet are longing for a relaxing summer by the beach.

2. BACUIT ARCHIPELAGO, PALAWAN

Palawan has always been a favorite getaway to the adventure-hungry traveler, for the province offers not only heavenly beaches, but also possesses breathtaking vistas and exciting biodiversity. One of these places is the Bacuit Archipelago in El Nido, inarguably one of the best beach landscapes in the world. Also awaiting the audacious traveler are features such as Miniloc Island's Big Lagoon, the most photographed sight in Palawan; and Matinloc Island's Secret Beach, only accessible by swimming through a keyhole slot.

Trivia: The American reality game show Amazing Race shot one of their episodes in Bacuit.

3. PANGLAO ISLAND, BOHOL

Panglao Island is a recent favorite among bakasyonistas, for who will not be enticed with some of the Philippines' clearest waters, paired with rich marine biodiversity and sands as fine and white as Boracay's? More importantly, Panglao Island is rarely visited by the volume of people that troop to Boracay, so your dream of a quiet summer by the beach can become a reality.

4. PAGUDPUD, ILOCOS NORTE

Pagudpud is hailed as the “Boracay of the North,” sans the gazillion tourists. The secluded Maira-ira Beach brings the vacationer a most sought-after relaxation, as there are hardly any visitors on these fantastic shores. One can also see a view of the Bangui Windmills, the magnificent power generators situated in Bangui Bay.

5. SIARGAO ISLAND

Siargao, a rare gem found in the province of Surigao del Norte, is steadily gaining popularity as one of the best surfing destinations in the world. Cloud 9, the venue for the yearly surfing competition called Siargao Cup, boasts of waves that can rival those of Hawaii's. Less adventurous tourists can enjoy the sand strip in General Luna, while spelunkers can explore the island's tunnels and caves.

6. MALAPASCUA ISLAND, CEBU

Until recently, this stunning island north of Cebu was not even on the municipal map. Now, Malapascua Island is hailed as one of the country's best beach destinations. It offers the curious tourist white-sand coasts, great food, and a no-fuss, low-key approach to tourism. Divers will surely be spoiled with the fascinating wreckage beneath the marine sanctuary of nearby Gato Island, as well as a rare treat of the appearance of the thresher shark off Monad Shoal.

7. NORTH PANDAN ISLAND, MINDORO OCCIDENTAL

Although Mindoro usually brings to mind the famous Puerto Galera, it is North Pandan Island that takes centerstage in our list. This tropical island gives the relaxing tourist complete escape from the busy city life. The island's laidback lifestyle together with the white sand beaches, prime diving spots, and sumptuous buffets are real treats for any vacationer. The costs are not too pricey, so even the traveler with the strictest budget can enjoy a good vacation.

8. CORON ISLAND, PALAWAN

Hailed as the most beautiful island of the Calamian group in Palawan, Coron Island gives tourists the best of inland and coastal swimming and diving experiences. Its main attractions are Lake Kayangan and Lake Barracuda, which are crystal-clear lakes filled with interesting features. The island also boasts of white sand beaches already typical of the coastlines of Palawan.

9. CAMIGUIN

Camiguin is a volcanic island located north of the main island of Mindanao. Because of its location, Camiguin is often overlooked as a tourist destination. But little do people know that this volcanic paradise offers some of the Philippines' best sceneries. Aside from its powder-like white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, one can enjoy the island's beautiful geography, which include the active Mount Hibok-Hibok and the scenic Katibawasan Falls.

10. ROMBLON ISLAND

Romblon is the must-see destination for one who has a taste for remote yet beautiful places. North of Boracay Island, Romblon boasts its own set of idyllic beaches, but with a more relaxed and simplified atmosphere. It is also a historic province, with its capital, also called Romblon, the site of 17th century fortifications, churches, and lighthouses.

ILOILO CITY , Philippines  â€" Mistaking a homemade firearm for a toy gun, a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot dead his four-year-old sister in their house in Cabatuan, Iloilo last Monday morning.

The boy was looking for a pen when he spotted a bag hanging on a wall. He checked to see if there was a pen inside, but instead saw a single-shot homemade firearm, P03 Lope Ricaforte of the Cabatuan police told The STAR.

Curious with what he saw, the boy took the firearm out of the bag and played with it, thinking it was just a toy gun. To aggravate matters, the gun was loaded.

The boy must have aimed it at his sister when it went off, hitting the latter, Ricaforte said.

The boy’s sister was rushed to the Ramon Tabiana Memorial Hospital in Cabatuan town, but doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

At the time of the incident, their parents were not in the house as both were working.

Although no charges would be filed, the Cabatuan police said the gun would remain in their possession because it was unlicensed.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - â€" Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers raised their 15th championship banner as they tipped off a new National Basketball Association season with a 99-92 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

A plethora of Laker stars from the past turned out to help the defending champions collect their rings and unveil their new banner high in the rafters of Staples Center arena.

"It's a magical night," Bryant said on Tuesday. "The last time we really reminisce on past seasons so it felt good."

The Lakers were one of eight teams making their season debut Tuesday and in another key game, Paul Pierce scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lift Boston to a 95-89 win over the Cavaliers, spoiling the opening night for the new Cleveland duo of LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal.

Magic Johnson, Jerry West, James Worthy, Rick Fox and Robert Horry took their positions at centre court where they rubbed shoulders with current Lakers Bryant, Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher.

The Lakers also welcomed back Tex Winter, presenting him with his championship ring during a brief on-court ceremony at the end of the third quarter. The Lakers assistant coach Winter is still recovering after suffering a stroke six months ago.

"It is always tough to play these games after those kind of ceremonies. I think when you have that kind of ceremony and this kind of re-living the last year and you are not ready to step up and march to the tune of this season yet," Jackson said. "We got it back. We did okay."

Lakers rising star Andrew Bynum made his 22nd birthday a special one by scoring 26 points and hauling down 13 rebounds against the Clippers. Bryant led all scorers with 33 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The win extended the Lakers win streak over the Clippers to nine straight and raised their record overall at Staples Center to 32-9 against the Clippers.

The Lakers and Clippers not only play in same city but they share the same building and while the game was a sellout, the crowd of 18,997 was decisively pro-Laker.

The Lakers played without forward Pau Gasol who was out with a strained hamstring.

Free throws were key Tuesday as the Lakers had 37 attempts from the line compared to just 16 for the Clippers.

Bynum was solid from the line stepping up when he had to and finishing eight of 10.

Lakers beat Orlando in five games in the finals last year for their 15th NBA title and they will be going after another title with the same basic group.

"We certainly have the talent to win another one," Bryant said.

The Lakers held onto one free agent in Lamar Odom but Trevor Ariza left to join the Houston Rockets. Odom had a busy offseason marrying reality television performer Khloe Kardashian but now says it is time to concentrate on basketball.

"We feel like we can play for the record of most wins in a season and win another championship," Odom said.

The Lakers hope to fill the void left by Ariza's departure with the addition of volatile forward Ron Artest who signed a five-year, 33 million dollar deal.

Artest struggled in shooting making just three-of-seven from the free throw line. "I'm motivated to win," Artest said.

The Clippers are hoping to erase memories of a dismal 19-win season last year.

But even before their season got off the ground Tuesday they received more bad when it was learned that first-overall pick Blake Griffin had suffered a broken knee cap and could be out for up to six weeks.

The Lakers led by 10 points (59-49) at the half then let the Clippers close the gap in the third before pulling away in the fourth quarter.

"We just played with a sense of enjoyment that carried us for the first half," Bryant said. "In the second half we had to get to the grind a little more."

Eric Gordon led the Clippers with 21 points against the Lakers.

Clippers Baron Davis said the game was close and he sees an upside to the season.

"Last year we got blown out but I think this year it is a different team," Davis said. "We really felt we could have won this game."

In Cleveland, reigning MVP James knocked down 38 points and had eight assists. O'Neal, a 15-time All-Star who was traded to the Cavaliers from the Phoenix Suns in the offseason, poured in 10 points and 10 rebounds in a rare home loss for the Cavs.

Last season, the Cavaliers won their first 23 home games, on the way to a 39-2 mark at home.

Dallas and Portland were also winners Tuesday.

Health and Food / Fruit Fights the Flu
October 29, 2009, 04:35:03 PM
Fruit fights the germs we're exposed to in the winter. "The vitamin load keeps your immune level high, allowing you to fend off colds and flu," says Amy Howell, Ph.D., a research scientist at Rutgers University. Fruits also reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Try the five below to give your immune system a boost.

Apples
The most popular source of antioxidants in our diet, one apple has an antioxidant effect equivalent to 1,500 mg of vitamin C. Apples are loaded with protective flavonoids, which may prevent heart disease and cancer.

Papayas
With 250 percent of the RDA of vitamin C, a papaya can help kick a cold right out of your system. The beta-carotene and vitamins C and E in papayas reduce inflammation throughout the body, lessening the effects of asthma.

Cranberries
Cranberries have more antioxidants than other common fruits and veggies. One serving has five times the amount in broccoli. Cranberries are a natural probiotic, enhancing good bacteria levels in the gut and protecting it from foodborne illnesses.

Grapefruit
Loaded with vitamin C, grapefruit also contains natural compounds called limonoids, which can lower cholesterol. The red varieties are a potent source of the cancer-fighting substance lycopene.

Bananas
One of the top food sources of vitamin B6, bananas help reduce fatigue, depression, stress, and insomnia. Bananas are high in magnesium, which keeps bones strong, and potassium, which helps prevent heart disease and high blood pressure.

Health and Food / The Truth about Diet Soda
October 29, 2009, 04:31:43 PM
We talk a lot about ''watching what we eat,'' but if you never gave a thought to what you ate and instead watched only what you drank, you could probably cut 450 calories a day out of your life. (Yes, nearly a pound of fat loss a week!) That's what a study from the University of North Carolina found. Americans today drink about 192 gallons of liquid a yearâ€"or about 2 liters a day. To put it into perspective, this is nearly twice as many calories as we did 30 years ago.

When confronted with the growing tide of calories from sweetened beverages, the first response is, “Why not just drink diet soda?” Well, for a few reasons:

Just because diet soda is low in calories doesn't mean it can't lead to weight gain.

It may have only 5 or fewer calories per serving, but emerging research suggests that consuming sugary-tasting beverages--even if they're artificially sweetened--may lead to a high preference for sweetness overall. That means sweeter (and more caloric) cereal, bread, dessert--everything.

Guzzling these drinks all day long forces out the healthy beverages you need.

Diet soda is 100 percent nutrition-free, and again, it's just as important to actively drink the good stuff as it is to avoid that bad stuff. So one diet soda a day is fine, but if you're downing five or six cans, that means you're limiting your intake of healthful beverages, particularly water and tea.

There remain some concerns over aspartame, the low-calorie chemical used to give diet sodas their flavor.

Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than sugar, and some animal research has linked consumption of high amounts of the sweetener to brain tumors and lymphoma in rodents. The FDA maintains that the sweetener is safe, but reported side effects include dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, memory loss, and mood changes. Bottom line: Diet soda does you no good, and it might just be doing you wrong.

The best way to hydrate is by drinking low-calorie, high-nutrient fluidsâ€"and avoiding belt-busting beverages like the 20 Unhealthiest Drinks in America.

Now that you have a hold on your liquid assets, upgrade the rest of your grocery list by avoiding the 13 Worst "Healthy" Foods in the Supermarket. With so many items to choose from, it's easier to fall victim to packaged food lies than you think.

Relieve stress. Rubbing a bit of lavender essential oil on your temples will help alleviate tension and stress. You can even crush up a bit of fresh lavender between your fingers and use it the same way. Since stress is a contributing factor to many other health concerns, using lavender to relieve stress is a natural way to improve overall health.

Sleep better naturally. Lavender is a natural remedy for better sleep in several ways. Boil lavender flowers to make a tea. Lavender tea works just as well as chamomile tea to relax the body and help you sleep better. Place a vase of fresh lavender flowers in the bedroom to fill the room with the relaxing scent of lavender. Fresh flowers can also be put in a small pillow to help you sleep better and relax away the stress of the day.

Smell good. For hundreds of years lavender oil has been used as a natural perfume. It smells wonderful and the aromatherapy will help you relieve stress throughout the day. Dabbing lavender essential oil on your neck and wrists has a pleasing scent and no harmful chemicals. Which is a great natural health benefit of using lavender instead of harmful chemical perfumes. You can also add fresh lavender flowers or essential oil to a hot bath to ease away tension and leave an overall pleasing aroma to your skin.

Get rid of dandruff and irritated skin. Boil lavender just as you would for a tea. Once it is cooled, use it as a daily rinse in your hair until dandruff is cleared up. It will also leave a relaxing, pleasing scent to your hair. For skin irritation, put lavender in a spray bottle and spray the problem areas liberally, several times a day. It is an excellent alternative with natural health benefits without all the chemicals.

Clean a minor wound. Lavender oil has long been used as an antiseptic for cleaning minor cuts and scrapes, much the same way rubbing alcohol is used. It is a great alternative for children because it does not have the sting of rubbing alcohol. Also the scent is relaxing and can aid in taking away the tension of those minor cuts and scrapes.

Philippine Daily News / 2 long weekends in November
October 22, 2009, 04:13:46 PM
MANILA - Two long weekends are set next month as President Arroyo declared non-working holidays for November.

The first is a three-day weekend from October 31 (Saturday) to November 2 (Monday).

November 1, All Saints' Day, and November 2, All Souls' Day, are special non-working holidays.

The second is a four-day weekend  from November 27 (Friday) to November 30 (Monday).

November 27 and 28 have been declared non-working holidays in observance of Eid'l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice, held by Muslims after the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. This is based on Proclamation 1808 signed in April.

Meanwhile, November 30, a Monday, is a regular non-working holiday to commemorate Bonifacio Day.

On Wednesday, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita reminded the public of the holidays previously proclaimed by the President. -- with a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News

i was never punished when i was in grade school kay bootan kaayo ko. i was even in the top 5 of our class but during my high school years, mingawas ang true colors nako...these were the times nga gihimo namo og stand-bayanan ang Guidance office ni Mrs. dumadag kay halos weekly tawagon ang whole barkada tungod sa pagka-badlongon... the most hilarious was when we were punished and asked to shout infront of the flagpole but lucky for us, ming-volunteer among barkada nga b***t nga he will do that  nalang kay siya man gyud ang nasakpan kay nakatago ra mi and dili nalang mi iapil but we have to stand behind him and watch....

i am still tryng to think of a childhood wicked memory kay murag na-mental block out ko sa pagkakaron... i think sheltered ko as i child mao nga i am trying to do the opposite sa akong mga anak kay feel nako murag dili healthy akong upbringing... imagine nalang nga dli mi pwede muduwa sa mga silingan kay hadlok akong lolo and lola nga masakitan mi unya one time, uso ang luto2x.. ibog kaayo ko sa mga silingan namo kay nagluto2x sila dapit sa gate namo pero plastic nga luto2x, gipalitan ko og tinood nga lutoanan nga made of clay pots kay aron dli ko ma-ibog sa silingan namo. happy ko that time but murag mingaw kay mas mu-prefer siguro ko nga dahon akong giluto kaysa tinood nga bugas... mao nga akong playmates were my siblings ra gyud....
