An Oregon woman who tried to circumcise her 3-month-old son with a box-cutter was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to get her head examined.

Keemonta Peterson, 30, of Portland, pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment earlier this year, The Oregonian newspaper reported Monday.

"The reality is you love your children and had absolutely no intent to harm your child," Multnomah County Circuit Judge Eric Bergstrom told Peterson at the sentencing Monday, the paper reported.

Peterson wanted to have her son circumcised after being inspired by reading the Old Testament, but decided to do it herself in Oct. 2010 because she thought he was too old for doctors to perform the procedure on him, the paper reported.

She studied a few YouTube videos on circumcision and then grabbed a box-cutter and tried to make believe she was a surgeon.

Her less-than-expert handiwork caused the boy to bleed profusely and suffer intense pain, forcing her to call 911 for some professional medical help, the paper reported.

Cops collared her in April.

The boy completely recovered and is now living with his three siblings under the state's care, the paper reported. Peterson is allowed to see the children during supervised visits.

Her lawyer, Scott Raivio, said the circumcision was "an aberration during a down period in her life" and that Peterson has shown herself to be "a very natural, caring and loving mother."

Bergstrom ordered her to undergo a mental health evaluation, the paper reported.

Circumcision is normally done before the newborn is a month old, but it can be done on older boys and even adults, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In cases where the procedure is performed on older children or adults, patients may need to be put under general anesthesia and have additional precautions taken to prevent excessive bleeding. -- http://www.nydailynews.com/

AP â€" 6 hrs ago

SEATTLE (AP) â€" A photo of the new U.S. ambassador to China carrying his own backpack and ordering his own coffee at an airport has charmed Chinese citizens not used to such frugality from their officials.

ZhaoHui Tang, a businessman from Bellevue, Washington, snapped the photo Friday on his iPhone when he spotted Gary Locke at the counter of an airport Starbucks. Locke is the first Chinese-American ambassador to China and a former governor of Washington state.

Tang uploaded the photo to the Chinese social media network Sina Weibo because he thought it was cool to run into the new ambassador at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

He didn't expect it to generate 40,000 reposts and thousands of comments.

"This is something unbelievable in China," said Tang, a Chinese-American citizen. "Even for low-ranking officials, we don't do things for ourselves. Someone goes to buy the coffee for them. Someone carries their bags for them."

Locke tried to use a coupon or voucher for the coffee, but the barista rejected it, Tang said. The ambassador then paid with a credit card, he said.

Tang, chief executive of an Internet advertising firm called adSage, was flying from Seattle to Silicon Valley. Locke was leaving for China from the next gate over.

Tang introduced himself to Locke when he took the picture and wished him luck in the new job. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

7. Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Manila archbishop

For Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Cruz committed a “sin” against God because of his blasphemous exhibit.

In a circular titled “’Prayer of Reparation’ for the Sin of Sacrilege and Blasphemy” issued yesterday, Cardinal Rosales declared Aug. 26, a Friday, a “Day of Penance” at the Archdiocese of Manila wherein Masses would be offered for the forgiveness of sins.

Aside from requiring Mass celebrants to wear purple vestments, “we also encourage everyone to perform an act of penance or sacrifice on this day, such as fasting or other forms of mortification, as an expression of remorse for the sins committed against God’s majesty.”

The “Day of Penance” is one of the highlights of the week-long “Prayer of Reparation” from Aug. 21 to Aug. 28.

“In the past weeks we have witnessed the uproar created by the exhibit of art works by the Cultural Center of the Philippines purportedly on modern art mixed media installations on contemporary themes. Many agree that the work over-reached the boundaries of freedom of expression. Most say it is offensive and a great affront to Catholics and Christians, and to all people who value decency. To them the work is ‘trash.’ And we agree,” Cardinal Rosales said.

6. Edgardo Angara, chairman of the Senate committee on education, arts and culture

Angara said that it was enough for him to hear that the CCP is undertaking some reforms as a result of the controversy and that yesterday’s hearing would be the last because the legal process should be allowed to take its due course.

5. F. Sionil Jose, national artist for literature

National artist for literature F. Sionil Jose, for his part, argued that Cruz’s work was not art.

“All art is propaganda but not all propaganda is art,” he said.

4. Fr. Pablo Tiong O.P., UST vice rector and Archbishop Jose Palma, CBCP vice president

But critics of Cruz’s work such as the UST administration, represented by vice rector Fr. Pablo Tiong O.P. and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, represented by its vice president Archbishop Jose Palma, argued that the freedom of expression is not absolute.

Tiong said that the exhibit was not sanctioned by the UST and that the institution considers the work of Cruz offensive to Catholics and the Catholic religion.

Palma said that moral criteria must always be applied on the subject of art.

He said that the Church condemns the artistic portrayal of the image of Jesus Christ as immoral but does not condemn the artist himself.

3. Florin Hilbay, UP College of Law professor

UP College of Law professor Florin Hilbay agreed that Cruz should have exercised his freedom of speech more responsibly but emphasized that this right is guaranteed under the Constitution.

“Whether Mideo Cruz can express himself the way he did is a constitutional non-issue. As a matter of constitutional law, the right of Cruz to express himself through Politeismo is recognized by the Constitution that gives him freedom of expression and requires Philippine society to separate church and State,” Hilbay said.

“The responsible exercise of that right is a matter of opinion, ideology, faith and even temperament. Even if only because Mideo’s expression allows us the opportunity to reconsider our fundamental belief, which sadly a lot of people are unable to appreciate, we should protect his expression,” he added.
#50854
2. Raul Pangalangan, former dean of the University of the Philippines College of Law

While the controversy over Cruz’s work has centered on the religious aspect, constitutional experts noted that its legal aspect should also be addressed, particularly the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Raul Pangalangan, former dean of the University of the Philippines College of Law, pointed out that there were two Supreme Court decisions on the issue of religiously offensive speech.

In both cases, Pangalangan noted that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the party accused of making offensive speech.

“What is at stake here is a different kind of violation of freedom of speech. In this case what we are dealing with is censorship, prior restraint. From the discussion this morning, my own sense, and this is my own opinion, is that the art piece in question is speech and therefore entitled to the protection of the freedom of speech clause,” he said.

Comments on the issue (culled from “Kulo artist snubs Senate hearing”, by Marvin Sy, The Philippine Star, August 17, 2011)

1. Jinggoy Estrada, Senate president pro tempore and Vicente Sotto III, Senate majority leader

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada and Senate Majority leader Vicente Sotto III led in castigating the CCP for reportedly offending the religious sensibilities of Catholics by allowing the “blasphemous” work of Cruz to be displayed in a state-run institution.

Jains go out of their way so as not to hurt even small insects and other tiny animals, because they believe that harm caused by carelessness is as reprehensible as harm caused by deliberate action. Hence they take great pains to make sure that no minuscule animals are injured by the preparation of their meals and in the process of eating and drinking.

All living beings require food for their survival. Jains practice strict vegetarianism. The practice of vegetarianism is instrumental for the practice of non-violence and peaceful co-operative co-existence. Basic non-violence principles can be performed depending on one's capability and specific situation in terms of meeting one's life's demands and expectations.

Jains are strictly forbidden to use any leather products since they are derived by merciless and inhumane killing of animals. Jains usually do not consume root vegetables such as potatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, radishes, cassava, sweet potatoes, turnips, etc., as the plant needed to be killed in the process of accessing these prior to the end of their life cycle. --Wiki

Digambara, (Sanskrit: “Sky-clad,” i.e., naked) one of the two principal sects of the Indian religion Jainism, whose male ascetics shun all property and wear no clothes. In accordance with their practice of nonviolence, the monks also use a peacock-feather duster to clear their path of insects to avoid trampling them. They drink water from a gourd, and they beg for their food and eat only once a day. -- http://www.britannica.com/

Although Senior Digambar monks wear no clothes, following the practice of Lord Mahavira, they do not consider themselves to be nude. Rather, they are wearing the environment, that is the quintessential, akasha or space. Digambaras believe that this practice represents a refusal to give in to the demands of the body for comfort and private property. Only Digambara ascetics are required to forsake clothing and not the laity. Digambara ascetics have only two possessions: a peacock feather broom and a water gourd. â€"Wiki
