I was thinking about this all week. I was wondering if any of you fellow members of Tubag Bohol considered adopting a child? I know for myself, I personally want to have my own children, but I am also open to adopting a child who is in need. What are your views?

I am satisfied that government held its own ground. This is a political victory for the Government of the Philippines, and democracy. And I concur with what Ate Ging mentioned. Trillanes must be punished, he must be made an example of. The Law is the supreme judge of the land, and no one is free from its verdict. Not a president, a senator, a congressman, a general, and average citizen.

My praise goes to the Philippines!

Rob, Hey man. I just wanted to say hey and whats up? Hows your day, my buddy ol' pal? I hope you're holding on there, bro, you know how much ive been taking all this hard lately, very unbecoming of me because you know how hard i try to cover my emotions--always the 'tough guy' lol. Yesterday was beautiful man. Seriously--they had a program for you at the Ford Ecumenical Chapel at 4PM (yours truly took an hour break from lab work to attend it, i know i know..its very unlike of 'Big Al' to do that--hahaha--but you know bro, some of us want that 'Arbitrary' grade ;) hahaha, I love you man. I swear we are truly brothers from a different mother and father ) But anyways. Back to the point.

Yea, your mom and dad were there--flew all the way from Boston, Massachusetts to attend the college's service memoriam for you. Dude, you would have loved it. And in a way i knew you were there---we all felt you there. There was President Cook, the administration, your favorite English professor DR. Michaels,  Alison was there, all your friends and loved ones. Id say that there were probably 50 or students who knew you man that were there. Rob...i tried to be strong bro. After they had the program, they had a video recording of all the pictures you had. And one thing that i liked was the 'definition' of your persona and your inner beauty. They described you as : an adventurer, an athlete, a son, a boyfriend, a grandson, a learner, a spiritual man, and a friend. All of those descriptions included pictures of you and all the people and places you visited. But man...on the description of 'Friend' they had a picture of you and me in full hug. Man. I broke down in tears man. God Robbo--thank you so much for that picture--for that memory--for that image. I LOVE you BRO! In my heart--i know you can feel it. We all felt you with us in that church. In that time. Thank You so much Rob for the love and change you made in us--your imprint in our lives. God Only knows how much love, compassion, and tenderness you had/have. It was a good closure man.

I was able to meet your mom and your dad. Thank god for that.

I think that is good. I think that is enough. You live on, bro, in all our hearts. Forever.

Bless you,,,,,,,,,,,
May the Lord God Bless You and Keep You,,,,

Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Finally!!

Yesterday was very vexing for me because I was in the bio lab ALL day from 9AM till 10PM and as i was on my retinue of work--during my spare time, i tried logging on to TubagBohol but had difficulty logging on. Some message appeared on the screen and said 'internal error--cannot proceed'. I thought the site went down--luckily for me Hazel told me that it was just a glitch in the American server. Thank goodness!

Then I realized in my head that "my god, i think im addicted to this site." hahaha!

Oh but today is a good day! Because TB is back on! That and its the weekend!

Civil society groups, bishops join Trillanes

source:  inquirer.net

MAKATI CITY, Philippines -- Civil society groups and bishops called for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to resign and called on the people to come out and show support for Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.

Among them were Jimmy Regalario of the Kilusang Makabansang Ekonomiya, Father Robert Reyes, former University of the Philippines president Francisco Nemenzo, former Vice President Teofisto Guingona, Bishops Julius Labayen and Gaudencio Tobias.

Nemenzo called on the Filipinos to “carry on the fight.”

Regalario said his group was calling on those in the line of succession from Vice President Noli De Castro, Senate President Manuel Villar, Speaker Jose De Venecia to give way to Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno to head a caretaker government for one and a half years, during which a new Constitution would be drawn up.

“People ask me if this is another EDSA. I hope so...To our countrymen, instead of going abroad, it's time to come here...This administration has no moral ascendancy. It is corrupt to the bones. Pagod na kami [We are tired],” Reyes said.

One thing. Separation of Church and State.

As much as I am a Catholic, I see no place for religion in the fields of politics--nor should religion influence politics. The bishops are in err to even make such declarations. Unethical and totally out of their spherical roles. Theologians, either they be catholic, protestant, muslim, jew etc, should remain in their tenements--in the church, mosque, or temple and not in political life.

This is one thing that the Philippines needs to challenge and change.

Please don't call me Sir, I am not of noble birth and do not take advantage of the masses. Just call me Lorenzo, Mr. Brownman.

Yes, I believe that we are all peace loving Filipinos who yearn to see the progress and advancement of our beloved Philippines. However, I am a realist and I totally abhor unnecessary coup de tats. I am totally admonished by the gravity of some Filipinos in the political sphere in Manila! Where do they have the right to even do this! This man, this Trillanes hasn't even functioned 1 year as a legislator and he's already part of a group that wants to oust our President? Where is the respect for the Chief? He wouldn't know because he's a mutineer. What does he know of 'duty' and 'following orders'? He would have himself enthroned as president and lead the entire country into ruin and reverse ALL the accomplishments the Arroyo Administration has procured in the last 6 years. Let us not be blind! Do not support this insurrectionist called Trillanes!

it's the filipino culture... we started it in 1980s. in fact, other countries are doing it too because the streets are good place to voice out the sentiments of the people. we used into it... nothing's new in phil.

The problem with constant revolution and the manner of these revolutionary protests is that the 'masses' that they claim to represent are composed of uneducated, desperate minds, little or few of the Filipino intelligentsia actually take part in these 'protests'. On the contrary, these protesters are members of the slum, squatters who have no idea of the complex processes of political science, national growth, nation building, retaining and developing political relations with foreign states vis a vis economic trade, military partnership, energy purchase. These protesters are garnered to the streets and are influenced by the unstable passions of the 'mass' phenomena--and take part in it for the thrill--as can be documented in the French Revolution. Government must maintain its firm resolve to fight and hold its ground even if the passions of the people rise and fall. If government is expected to capitulate to any protesting crowd, then the entire country would be doomed--perpetual instability would be manifested. The reality of the situation is that not one government can satisfy everyone; even in more progressive nation states such as the United States. Does the US give in to people's protest immediately? Of course not. If any ill act is committed, it would be addressed by the federal grand jury, the federal courts, and make its way to the ears of the United States Supreme Court--and if changes are necessary--will be implemented. From there, the legislative and executive will make proper actions. The Philippine Government needs to reiterate such stances; where the Law of the Land must make precedence. This is why there are rebellions occurring in the country---by the NPA in the north and by the islamofascists in the south--because even our own political processes is hampered by insurrectionists in the Manila heartland. I say to the government: Be Firm! Uphold the Law and Punish those who commit seditious acts against the Republic!

The 1986 Edsa revolutionary people power is understandable, however these constant occurrences are weakening the world's view on Philippine democracy. Its time for the country to prove to the region and the world that it means business and is not some ludicrous perpetual Sick Man of Asia. No. We are a fiery people with noble and resilient dreams for national growth. However, there are proper means to channel those concerns---investment in the intelligentsia and active legislative installments. GMA was placed on the presidency due to the inadequacy and corruption of the Estrada administration. For sure the Arroyo administration isn't free from corruption, however, here administration has seen so many leaps and bounds for the progress of the country by any President to hold office since the fall of the Strong Man Marcos. The country's economy is surging at a phenomenal 7.5% gdp growth, growing and rising remittances from OFWs; continuing growth in HDI (human developmental index) as the Arroyo administration invests in national and local infrastructure, intensifying pressure in the peace process in the south as well as continuing the AFP's hunt for terrorism, increased and re-kindled American-Philippine military/economic alliance. All of these are just a sample of the contributions and achievements of this administration that these protesters are calling 'illegitimate'.

No! Trillanes is illegitimate! He is a mutineer! Do you know the punishment of mutiny is in the United States? Court Martial, prison time, and even execution via a firing squad. However, in the Philippines, men like that are elected to legislative positions. Absolutely unthinkable. What does that say about our country to the world community when our society rewards the crimes of few individuals by placing them in a political pedestal? And now being asked to join the spearhead to depose a legitimate and fully functioning and stable Presidency that is of the GMA administration? Absurd, in my opinion.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo comes from a distinguished background that precedes her. She not only is the daughter of the former President of the Philippines, but was educated in the prestigious Georgetown University in her undergrad and was a classmate of former President William (Bill) Clinton, before proceeding to law school and politics in the Philippines. What does Trillanes have to answer the vast experience and political clout of Arroyo? Nothing, besides his total dereliction of duty in the military--worthy of the firing squad.

Nay, I don't think so.
#50718
QuoteOkay, Le.  I can not say, for a fact either that he has no moral ascendancy as he claimed GMA doesn't have but when are we going to stop having a new leader by going to the street?

Exactly.

Let the new president be elected in the next presidential elections and not by some rag-tag people's movement. We must reclaim the legitimacy of Philippine democracy vis-a-vis the electoral process, not by a subvertist action, which will only weaken the world's perception of Philippine democracy. Government must be firm so that it will not be easily swooned by the whirlwind passions of the people. To do so would make government unstable and fragile.

Government must be firm, resolute, thick-skinned. And make action against all seditious actions that will undermine the economic, political, military and national progress of the Republic of the Philippines. I for one do not recognize the legitimacy of Trillanes--nor any former de-facto military officer who mutinied the Armed Forces of the Philippines--and showed complete dereliction of duty to the allegiance of the state, and the Armed Forces that he was sworn to protect.

That is my firm view on this matter.

Lets all get back to business!

Bible Study / Re: Famous Scientists who Believed in God
November 29, 2007, 02:18:59 PM
It is rather intriguing to read about Einstein's faith because throughout his life, as he paved the road in the field of physics and physical science, as scientists would refer and regard him as one who will be 'immortalized' by history and by the minds of men--not once did Einstein deny God.Nay, Einstein always regarded and referred to his faith. His Jewish background and his faith in his creator was illustrated by the graces the Lord gave him. His firm understanding in science.

Afterall, science explains the reasons for why things happen and occur and the substances that play a role. The Almighty has willed it so. Man's innate yearning to know more--to understand the unexplained--is testament to our relation to God. We are drawn, intrinsically, to HIS Greatness.

Bible Study / Offering Incense
November 29, 2007, 02:03:30 PM
History of Use
'What is the history of incense? First of all, we find in the Scriptures many references to its use in Jewish worship. In the sanctuary of the Tabernacle of God an altar was provided for the burning of incense, morning and night.

It is thus described in the ritual which Moses gave to the Israelites, in the book of Exodus: "Take unto thee spices . . . of sweet savor and the clearest frankincense . . . and when thou hast beaten all into very small powder, thou shalt set of it before the Tabernacle. Most holy shall this incense be unto you.
[Exodus 30: 4-38]

It is also mentioned in the Psalms and by the prophets Isaias, Jeremias and Malachias, as well as in the Gospel account of the vision of Zacharias, the aged priest, who was "offering incense in the temple of the Lord" when he received the promise of God that a son would be given to him.
[Luke 1: 8-11]

[Also, incense creates a cloud. A cloud is a symbol for God the Father. For example at the Transfiguration, Matt. 17:5, a cloud appears and from it comes the Voice of God. In Acts 1:8 Jesus enters a cloud. Also in Exodus, the people are lead by a pillar of cloud, Exod. 13:22; and in Exodus 40:34 the cloud settled on the meeting tent and the glory of the Lord filled it. Thus the cloud of incense should remind us of God whose presence is revealed by a cloud.]

The use of incense, then, is a beautiful example of the wisdom of our Church, which adapts to our own purposes all that is good in every creed, all that will typify the spirit with which she wished her children to be animated, all that will aid them to attain to true fervor, all that will add solemnity to the worship which she offers to God."

The Symbolism of Incense.

The mystical meaning of incense is not difficult to comprehend. By its burning it symbolizes the zeal with which the faithful should be animated; by its sweet fragrance, the odor of Christian virtue; by its rising smoke, the ascent of prayer before the throne of the Almighty. As St. John tells us in the Apocalypse, or Book of Revelations: "The smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints ascended before God from the hand of the Angel

Sir. 39:14-16. "Send out fragrance like incense, and put forth blossoms like a lily. Scatter the fragrance, and sing a hymn of praise; bless the Lord for all his works. Ascribe majesty to his name and give thanks to him with praise, with songs on your lips, and with harps; this is what you shall say in thanksgiving: 'All the works of the Lord are very good, and whatever he commands will be done at the appointed time.'"

---

Sir. 45:16 He chose him out of all the living to offer sacrifice to the Lord, incense and a pleasing odor as a memorial portion, to make atonement for the people."

---

Rev. 5:8 "When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints."

Rev. 8:3-4 "Another angel with a golden censer came and stood at the altar; he was given a great quantity of incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar that is before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel."

Scriptural References:

Exod. 30:7-8. "Aaron shall offer fragrant incense on it; every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall offer it, and when Aaron sets up the lamps in the evening, he shall offer it, a regular incense offering before the LORD throughout your generations."

Exod. 30:34 -37. "The LORD said to Moses: Take sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense (an equal part of each), and make an incense blended as by the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy; and you shall beat some of it into powder, and put part of it before the covenant in the tent of meeting where I shall meet with you; it shall be for you most holy. When you make incense according to this composition, you shall not make it for yourselves; it shall be regarded by you as holy to the LORD."

Num. 4:7 Over the table of the bread of the Presence they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the plates, the dishes for incense, the bowls, and the flagons for the drink offering; the regular bread also shall be on it;

Ps. 141:2 Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice.

Prov. 27:9 Perfume and incense make the heart glad,

Mal. 1:11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.

Wis. 18:20 The experience of death touched also the righteous, and a plague came upon the multitude in the desert, but the wrath did not long continue. Wis. 18:21 For a blameless man was quick to act as their champion; he brought forward the shield of his ministry, prayer and propitiation by incense; he withstood the anger and put an end to the disaster, showing that he was your servant.

Sir.

Sir. 45:16 He chose him out of all the living to offer sacrifice to the Lord, incense and a pleasing odor as a memorial portion, to make atonement for the people."

Bible Study / Famous Scientists who Believed in God
November 29, 2007, 11:30:29 AM

1.  Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543)
Copernicus was the Polish astronomer who put forward the first mathematically based system of planets going around the sun. He attended various European universities, and became a Canon in the Catholic church in 1497. His new system was actually first presented in the Vatican gardens in 1533 before Pope Clement VII who approved, and urged Copernicus to publish it around this time. Copernicus was never under any threat of religious persecution - and was urged to publish both by Catholic Bishop Guise, Cardinal Schonberg, and the Protestant Professor George Rheticus. Copernicus referred sometimes to God in his works, and did not see his system as in conflict with the Bible.

2. Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1627)
Bacon was a philosopher who is known for establishing the scientific method of inquiry based on experimentation and inductive reasoning. In De Interpretatione Naturae Prooemium, Bacon established his goals as being the discovery of truth, service to his country, and service to the church. Although his work was based upon experimentation and reasoning, he rejected atheism as being the result of insufficient depth of philosophy, stating, "It is true, that a little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism, but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds about to religion; for while the mind of man looketh upon second causes scattered, it may sometimes rest in them, and go no further; but when it beholdeth the chain of them confederate, and linked together, it must needs fly to Providence and Deity." (Of Atheism)

3. Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
Kepler was a brilliant mathematician and astronomer. He did early work on light, and established the laws of planetary motion about the sun. He also came close to reaching the Newtonian concept of universal gravity - well before Newton was born! His introduction of the idea of force in astronomy changed it radically in a modern direction. Kepler was an extremely sincere and pious Lutheran, whose works on astronomy contain writings about how space and the heavenly bodies represent the Trinity. Kepler suffered no persecution for his open avowal of the sun-centered system, and, indeed, was allowed as a Protestant to stay in Catholic Graz as a Professor (1595-1600) when other Protestants had been expelled!

4. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
Galileo is often remembered for his conflict with the Roman Catholic Church. His controversial work on the solar system was published in 1633. It had no proofs of a sun-centered system (Galileo's telescope discoveries did not indicate a moving earth) and his one "proof" based upon the tides was invalid. It ignored the correct elliptical orbits of planets published twenty five years earlier by Kepler. Since his work finished by putting the Pope's favorite argument in the mouth of the simpleton in the dialogue, the Pope (an old friend of Galileo's) was very offended. After the "trial" and being forbidden to teach the sun-centered system, Galileo did his most useful theoretical work, which was on dynamics. Galileo expressly said that the Bible cannot err, and saw his system as an alternate interpretation of the biblical texts.

5. Rene Descartes (1596-1650)
Descartes was a French mathematician, scientist and philosopher who has been called the father of modern philosophy. His school studies made him dissatisfied with previous philosophy: He had a deep religious faith as a Roman Catholic, which he retained to his dying day, along with a resolute, passionate desire to discover the truth. At the age of 24 he had a dream, and felt the vocational call to seek to bring knowledge together in one system of thought. His system began by asking what could be known if all else were doubted - suggesting the famous "I think therefore I am". Actually, it is often forgotten that the next step for Descartes was to establish the near certainty of the existence of God - for only if God both exists and would not want us to be deceived by our experiences - can we trust our senses and logical thought processes. God is, therefore, central to his whole philosophy. What he really wanted to see was that his philosophy be adopted as standard Roman Catholic teaching. Rene Descartes and Francis Bacon (1561-1626) are generally regarded as the key figures in the development of scientific methodology. Both had systems in which God was important, and both seem more devout than the average for their era.

6. Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
In optics, mechanics, and mathematics, Newton was a figure of undisputed genius and innovation. In all his science (including chemistry) he saw mathematics and numbers as central. What is less well known is that he was devoutly religious and saw numbers as involved in understanding God's plan for history from the Bible. He did a considerable work on biblical numerology, and, though aspects of his beliefs were not orthodox, he thought theology was very important. In his system of physics, God is essential to the nature and absoluteness of space. In Principia he stated, "The most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion on an intelligent and powerful Being."

  7. Robert Boyle (1791-1867)
One of the founders and key early members of the Royal Society, Boyle gave his name to "Boyle's Law" for gases, and also wrote an important work on chemistry. Encyclopedia Britannica says of him: "By his will he endowed a series of Boyle lectures, or sermons, which still continue, 'for proving the Christian religion against notorious infidels...' As a devout Protestant, Boyle took a special interest in promoting the Christian religion abroad, giving money to translate and publish the New Testament into Irish and Turkish. In 1690 he developed his theological views in The Christian Virtuoso, which he wrote to show that the study of nature was a central religious duty." Boyle wrote against atheists in his day (the notion that atheism is a modern invention is a myth), and was clearly much more devoutly Christian than the average in his era.

  8. Michael Faraday (1791-1867)
Michael Faraday was the son of a blacksmith who became one of the greatest scientists of the 19th century. His work on electricity and magnetism not only revolutionized physics, but led to much of our lifestyles today, which depends on them (including computers and telephone lines and, so, web sites). Faraday was a devoutly Christian member of the Sandemanians, which significantly influenced him and strongly affected the way in which he approached and interpreted nature. Originating from Presbyterians, the Sandemanians rejected the idea of state churches, and tried to go back to a New Testament type of Christianity.

9. Gregor Mendel (1822-1884)
Mendel was the first to lay the mathematical foundations of genetics, in what came to be called "Mendelianism". He began his research in 1856 (three years before Darwin published his Origin of Species) in the garden of the Monastery in which he was a monk. Mendel was elected Abbot of his Monastery in 1868. His work remained comparatively unknown until the turn of the century, when a new generation of botanists began finding similar results and "rediscovered" him (though their ideas were not identical to his). An interesting point is that the 1860's was notable for formation of the X-Club, which was dedicated to lessening religious influences and propagating an image of "conflict" between science and religion. One sympathizer was Darwin's cousin Francis Galton, whose scientific interest was in genetics (a proponent of eugenics - selective breeding among humans to "improve" the stock). He was writing how the "priestly mind" was not conducive to science while, at around the same time, an Austrian monk was making the breakthrough in genetics. The rediscovery of the work of Mendel came too late to affect Galton's contribution.

10. William Thomson Kelvin (1824-1907)
Kelvin was foremost among the small group of British scientists who helped to lay the foundations of modern physics. His work covered many areas of physics, and he was said to have more letters after his name than anyone else in the Commonwealth, since he received numerous honorary degrees from European Universities, which recognized the value of his work. He was a very committed Christian, who was certainly more religious than the average for his era. Interestingly, his fellow physicists George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903) and James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) were also men of deep Christian commitment, in an era when many were nominal, apathetic, or anti-Christian. The Encyclopedia Britannica says "Maxwell is regarded by most modern physicists as the scientist of the 19th century who had the greatest influence on 20th century physics; he is ranked with Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein for the fundamental nature of his contributions." Lord Kelvin was an Old Earth creationist, who estimated the Earth's age to be somewhere between 20 million and 100 million years, with an upper limit at 500 million years based on cooling rates (a low estimate due to his lack of knowledge about radiogenic heating).

11. Max Planck (1858-1947)
Planck made many contributions to physics, but is best known for quantum theory, which revolutionized our understanding of the atomic and sub-atomic worlds. In his 1937 lecture "Religion and Naturwissenschaft," Planck expressed the view that God is everywhere present, and held that "the holiness of the unintelligible Godhead is conveyed by the holiness of symbols." Atheists, he thought, attach too much importance to what are merely symbols. Planck was a churchwarden from 1920 until his death, and believed in an almighty, all-knowing, beneficent God (though not necessarily a personal one). Both science and religion wage a "tireless battle against skepticism and dogmatism, against unbelief and superstition" with the goal "toward God!"

12. Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
Einstein is probably the best known and most highly revered scientist of the twentieth century, and is associated with major revolutions in our thinking about time, gravity, and the conversion of matter to energy (E=mc2). Although never coming to belief in a personal God, he recognized the impossibility of a non-created universe. The Encyclopedia Britannica says of him: "Firmly denying atheism, Einstein expressed a belief in "Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the harmony of what exists." This actually motivated his interest in science, as he once remarked to a young physicist: "I want to know how God created this world, I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts, the rest are details." Einstein's famous epithet on the "uncertainty principle" was "God does not play dice" - and to him this was a real statement about a God in whom he believed. A famous saying of his was "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."

Scientists have turned an ordinary skin cell into what appears to be an embryonic stem cell. The process may eventually eliminate the controversial step of destroying human embryos for stem cell research.

The new technique involves fusing a skin cell with an existing, laboratory-grown embryonic stem cell. The fused, or hybrid, cell is "reprogrammed" to its embryonic state, Harvard University scientists report in the journal Science.

Their paper was published Sunday on the journal's Web site.

The breakthrough may one day quell the debate over stem cell research. But team member Kevin Eggan said the technology is still in early stages and is not a replacement for methods currently used to derive embryonic stem cells.

"This is just beginning of this system," he told reporters in a conference call.

Embryonic stem cells are unspecialized cells. They can grow into any type of cell found in our body.

Scientists hope embryonic stem cells can eventually be used to grow new tissue and replacement organs and to cure a range of ailments, from spinal cord injuries to Alzheimer's disease.

To study embryonic stem cells, researchers developed cell lines from stem cells, which were initially harvested from fertilized human eggs, such as those leftover from in vitro fertilization.

Because harvesting destroys the embryo, in the United States the practice has drawn the ire of many religious conservatives who regard destroying embryos as a form of murder.

New Way

The Harvard research suggests a new way to create embryonic stem cells that may one day eliminate the need to destroy fertilized human eggs.

The new type of stem cells is essentially a rejuvenated version of a person's own skin cells. A stem cell created by the new method would have DNA identical to that of the skin cell donor.

As a result, any tissue grown from the new stem cell could, in theory, be transplanted into the donor without much risk that the tissue would be rejected, Eggan noted.

But before the technique is viable, researchers must clear a technical hurdle: how to remove excess genetic information from the existing embryonic stem cell.

"Although the embryonic stem cells that we made contain the patient's genes, they also contain the embryonic stem cell genes that we started with," Eggan said. "And for the time being that's going to interfere with the usefulness of this."

Cell Fusion

The research team, led by Chad Cowan, merged human skin cells called fibroblasts with laboratory-grown embryonic stem cells.

The resulting hybrid cells contained chromosomes from both the skin cells and the stem cells. But according to several test results, the hybrid cells had the appearance, growth rate, and some key genetic characteristics of human embryonic cells.

"Even more importantly, we then went on to do experiments which really … showed that their state had really been transformed to an embryonic state," Eggan said.

If future research can clear remaining technical hurdles, the approach "may circumvent some of the logistical and societal concerns surrounding" stem cell research, the Harvard team concludes in Science.

While the new technique requires an existing embryonic stem cell, the researchers hope to learn how to reprogram adult cells without the use of an embryonic cell in the first place.

"The real payoff … ten years down the road perhaps, is to be able to directly induce those activities or factors of the adult cells and transform them to an embryonic state without having to use" an egg, Eggan said.

Psalm 8

  O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
       You have set your glory
       above the heavens.

From the lips of children and infants
       you have ordained praise
       because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

  When I consider your heavens,
      the work of your fingers,
       the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.

  You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you put everything under his feet:

  all flocks and herds,
and the beasts of the field,

  the birds of the air,
and the fish of the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

  O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Thats one thing I admire about Americans in general. They are so good and kind if you get to know them. If you open yourself to them--they will do the same. A nation of multiple cultures. A melting pot of Europeans, Asians, Africans, Latins, Middle Eastern, mingled into one.

One NATION. One people. Under God.

The Blessed Angel Gabriel, the Angel of the Lord God the MOST HIGH bears a message to Mary.

Now ... the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, unto a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he went in unto her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.” And she was troubled at his word and asked herself what manner of salutation this might be. And the angel said to her,“Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour before God. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a son and thou shalt name him Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called Son of the Most High; and the Lord God shall give to him the throne of David his father, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his reign there shall be no end.”
And Mary said unto the angel, “How shall this be, seeing that I know not man?” And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee. Therefore the holy one to be begotten shall be called the Son of God.” ... And Mary said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word!”

Bible Study / Advent Season
November 29, 2007, 10:58:28 AM

The Church has her own special liturgical year and calendar in which she presents again the history and unchanging mysteries of our salvation, from Creation to the Second Coming, together with the entire life of the Savior. The mysteries do not change, but we do. A little older and wiser, we have the opportunity to review and renew these mysteries. When the familiar feasts come around we grasp something more about them because we have lived another year and apply them more deeply to our lives. This is a year of formation, like a school in which we, like pupils, learn faith, hope and charity. We learn God's will and to do God's will. Each Sunday and feast will present a special lesson to us for our daily living.

Advent is an especially lovely season and we can make great use of it. With the beginning of the season of Advent, we begin a new liturgical year. The First Sunday of Advent is therefore the Church's "New Year's Day". In the Judeo-Christian tradition, Sunday begin at sundown of the day before when the faithful celebrate First Vespers. Advent begins the Christmas cycle.

Advent comes from the Latin word for an "arrival" or a "coming". Advent means that the Lord is coming. Jesus Christ, our brother in our humanity and our God in His divinity is about to arrive. But He is comes to us in different ways. First, Jesus came to us at a specific point in history at Bethlehem about 2000 years ago. But in the Church's great feast of Christmas He mystically comes again. Second, the Lord, Alpha and Omega, will come to judge the living and the dead in the Second Coming. Third, the Redeemer comes to us in grace. He speaks to us in our consciences, he comes to us in the Eucharist and in the Word of God proclaimed. He arrives in the person of the begger, the needy, the suffering, the oppressed. We must be ready to receive and welcome Him when He comes, however He comes.

Advent is a time of joy tinged with penance. Joy, because we can imagine nothing more sweet than the Christ Child and His Mother Mary's bliss at His coming to light. Penance because we must strive to be properly disposed to receive so great a gift of His presence. In the millennial tradition of the Church, we faithful have done penance before great feasts. Christmas and Easter each have their penitential seasons in anticipation, Advent and Lent. The liturgical color used in the Latin Church for the liturgy during both Advent and Lent is purple, a sign of penance. In some places people may see blue used, which is done without the Church's approval. The Latin Church also emphasizes the penitential dimension of the season by directing the use of sparse ornaments in church and by legislating that instrumental music should not be used, except to sustain congregational singing. This is a kind of liturgical fast, which makes the joy and celebration of Christmas all that much more powerful by the contrast of the lean and muted season of Advent. Advent is a time of great joy, because we look forward to the beautiful feast of the Nativity, but it is joy stitched through with somber and focused spiritual preparation by doing penance.

For me,

It was probably my freshman year in college. I felt so sick--i had a stomach virus the week before Fall Break (October 2004). I needed to go to the health clinic to check it out and didn't have the strength to walk there. My good good friend Rob saw me on my bed in fetal position and he grabbed my arm, and put me on his back. He carried me to the Winslow Health Center, which is the health clinic in campus. He waited for me in the clinic office--and as i was getting treatment--he never once left the room. Afterwards, he walked with me back to my dorm. He stayed with me when I was really sick and we talked--nurturing my soul to get strong enough to fight my body's ailment.

God Bless Him.

I have never met anyone so good (besides my family) till then. He barely knew me---and he cared for me. That was the beginning of our strong friendship that continues to this day. Despite our distance. I will remember that. Single act or random kindness.

It is interesting how people in the Philippines generally think that the people in the 'states are usually 'datu'. Dili pood na tinuud, daghaang kastanan dinhi na pobre pobre kai dili sila kaibao mo manage ilang spending habits. Na wa' ilang imperatives sa ilang everyday life, na wa ilang faith, na wa ilang dedication to family kai ning pick up sila sa 'false gods' of money, spending, drinking, gambling, etc.

Ning ingoon ahong ina-han nako, "Work honestly, live simple, be humble, be God-fearing, and you will be given good graces". And I try to live by that day by day. Though I have my own sins and faults, I do try my best to emulate the humility and honesty of my parents.

NO matter where we are, there will always be the rich and poor. Materialistically speaking.

Those who do not eat of the Bread of Life or drink of His blood---shall feel only emptiness.

Quote from: Bohol Bol-anon on November 28, 2007, 10:51:14 PM
Bran, there is something in death that I can't just fathom. Though I know very well that Papa will be resurrected at the final trumpet call when Christ returns because Papa had surrendered his life to Christ before he died, the humanity in me will always resurface. Because our minds and our senses are so acquainted with anything that is physical that we always find it difficult to experience the supernatural life. I know that Papa now lives in me as a living memory but there is that indescribable longing in my heart, a longing to hear his voice, to see his smile, to hold his hand, to sit or stand beside him.

At times I wish to come home to the Philippines and I would stay in the cemetery with him. I want to see the place where he's buried so that I'd experience a total assurance that he really stays there.

At the same time, there is that unexplainable fear of coming home. I fear the sight of our house. I fear the familiar surroundings of our neighborhood. I fear that his memories would overwhelm me if I see the things that he used to see, if I hear the things that he used to hear, if I touch the things that he used to touch. Papa loved to wear the shirts that I already abandoned, and that fact alone, if I'd see those shirts at our house, will intensify the nostalgia, and then the nostalgia will explode into fear. Nevertheless, I will run and embrace this fear so that I would know that death is real.

Mike. I feel connected to you in a way, pre, because we are both fighting the feeling of unexplainable pain of loss. This loss is so complete, and so certain that I sometimes question if I will ever be the same again. Death will always shock those affected, pre. No matter how great we are in life, no matter our convictions, our actions and contributions----there is no escaping death. For death is the stage before our final judgment; where the Lord God calls each and every one of us home.

Pre, as a human being, we are naturally needy of the physical. We yearn to touch, hear, taste, and see. For we have yet to be given the grace of God's face. Our eternal soul dwells in our shell, the body, and the only way for our soul to feel and yearn for the connection to the eternal God, the Only God, The One True God, is through physical means. It is in the time of death, my dear friend, that the soul is released from the capsule that is our body. Upon this, all or dreams, yearnings, hopes, aspirations--all that defines our soul, our inner being, will be lifted high into the heavens to be called to the Throne of God. It is then that we will be humbled---to see the Face of God. And receive judgment. And This judgment is absolute.  Firm. I believe Mike. I truly believe with my heart and soul, that we all shall be united with our loved ones that have gone before us to their rest. All shall be united, and all your prayers will be answered. The Lord God is a God of compassion, and hears all For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one;he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.
Psalm 22:24
We do not know the Lord. There is no complete understanding of the Lord God, who is the alpha and the omega. Whose throne reigns infinite as the heavens that he so created by mere thought. But this is utterly true, pre, that he KNOWS all of us. He knows us and our actions even before we think of it or act on it. For so he formed us in the womb.

Pre, I am totally totally here for you if you ever need someone to talk to. It is good to talk about our losses, the best thing we can do as humans and as brothers in our faith---is to support and comfort one another in our time of need. And I am so inspired by you, Mike. My faith has been strengthened by reading your writings, by seeing you cope with your loss and the anguish of loss. You have an admirable character, pre. Though I never had an older brother, I feel that I can call you my Kuya. Remember pre, that we are all here for a reason. Do not despair all the time, and I know how hard it is to not feel the pain of this loss--God knows I have my own battles to fight in the loss of my best friend--but we must not despair too much, my dear beloved Brother. For the Lord is so GOOD that he wants all of us to be happy. HE has given us a loving family, warm and supportive friends, miracles of everyday life, the breath of life that is in us, and the grace and LOVE of the Holy Spirit. The devil and his wicked demons are there who wish for us to despair, and stay in grief, for he is the antithesis of Love, and Happiness that is the Lord our GOD. We all carry our own crosses, pre, the burdens that we all carry in our journey that we call life. Be strong. Be firm in faith. And long for the promises of family, my dear brother. Many Loved Ones near and far away long to see you. They Await to see you.

You are In My prayers and In my thoughts.

Always Your Friend,
With Love,
Bran

November 29, 2007, 09:47:48 AM
The poem:
As we the withered ferns
By the roadway lying,
Time, the jester, spurns
All our prayers and prying --
All our tears and sighing,
Sorrow, change, and woe --
All our where-and-whying
For friends that come and go.

Life awakes and burns,
Age and death defying,
Till at last it learns
All but Love is dying;
Love's the trade we're plying,
God has willed it so;
Shrouds are what we're buying
For friends that come and go.

Man forever yearns
For the thing that's flying.
Everywhere he turns,
Men to dust are drying, --
Dust that wanders, eying
(With eyes that hardly glow)
New faces, dimly spying
For friends that come and go.

And thus we all are nighing
The truth we fear to know:
Death will end our crying
For friends that come and go.

My only concern is the realities of tectonics. The Philippines, like most of south east asia and east asia lay within the Ring of Fire. In ever constant motion, the Philippine trench clashes with the Marianna Trench as well as the northern plates near the Yellow Sea. Hence there are the residual occurrences of earth quakes, typhoons, (and other similar meteorological effects). Which would be a detriment to the base and structure of this said bridge. If a bridge were to be built--one thing is clear--international aid in creating the superstructure must be garnered and plans must be finalized in order for this to succeed.

Who knows, maybe it will be completed; but as of right now---we need more finances to back it up. And political solidarity from Region 7; as well as national support.

haahahahaha aray indeed, Ben. Yes its amazing that people these days still practice that; I know that here in the states there are men who are into that stuff--and pierce their genitals (the penis as well as the scrotum) as part of artistic show and for personal reasons. For me, whenever I see the National Geographic Channel and see the native indians of South America with wholes on their bottom lip--with  a wooden drum inserted in the hole, I gasp at such a sight. It is amazing for me that my own ancestors of Bohol utilized a much grotesque version of 'beauty show'; genital piercing.

I personally cannot fathom to my wildest dreams of ever allowing that done on me. I would scream in pain.

Ladies and Gentlemen! The National Anthem of these United States of America!
Please Rise~

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
'T is the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause. it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

If you do---what are you reasons for believing in them? Personal experiences...etc etc.

Share.

Below is an e-mail I receive today from a friend of KC Estremos, who died in a hit-and-run accident on the first week of November in Loon, Bohol. Anyone based in Bohol, please post any updated information on the victims of the hit-and-run accident. The driver is Engineer Maurito Lim. I think he already surrendered, and is now detained in jail.

-----

Dear Sir

Forgive me for emailing you directly but I am hoping you can assist me. I have good connections with the Philippines, Bohol and Cebu in particular. Two days ago news reached me that a very good friend of mine, KC Estremos, has been killed in a road accident. Having done a Google search I found the report you posted on the Tubag site, which confimed what I had been told.

The report is inaccurate in that KC was a 17 year old girl from Cebu who was staying in Loon together with her boyfriend Carmen. She was a sweet and loving girl who did all she could for her family. To be taken in this way is truly shocking. If the report about the driver is accurate then that is appalling. To claim that such an incident can be an accident when under the influence of drink and falling asleep is nonsense. In my country he would be locked up for a minimum of 15 years for such a crime.

I am still in total denial that KC can really be dead. Such a lovely young lady with her whole life ahead of her. Her friends in Cebu, along with myself, are very distressed. Do you have any information about what has happened to her body, whether she was buried in Loon or taken back to Cebu? I ask because we would like to visit her to say goodbye and to show our respects.

Any further information regarding this matter that you have will be very much appreciated,

Yours

(name withheld)

I offer my prayers for KC and pray that the bereaved family are strong enough to go on. The Lord guide and keep you, the Lord bless  you.

My sincere condolences,

Introduce Yourself / Re: How Is Your Day?
November 28, 2007, 04:54:11 AM
Today was a beautiful day. The sun finally came out from hiding. Today was breezy, windy, cool, brisk, I went to woodcock dam to walk--and nostalgia overran my thoughts. Memories of past anecdotes, of the fun times with my best friend. Walking in the tree bend right next to the creek--I saw the sun gleaming as the trees waved to and fro. Tears fell from my eyes, it was beautiful.

Dong, I was sent to the emergency in April for bleeding ulcer and I didn't go back to the doctor after I was released from 5-day hospitalization, what should I take or do?  I was given Nexxium but nahurot na.  I don't want sana to take so much medication.  If I can remember, I take couple of teaspoons of Manuka Honey a day.  Is that okay?

Ate, if you are still experiencing the symptoms of bleeding ulcer--i would suggest you ask for your family physician's counsel. In the meanwhile, you should also try some herbal remedies to help you--
Long thought to aggravate ulcers, cayenne pepper in moderation actually helps heal them in some cases. Stimulating blood flow to bring healing nutrients to the area, this member of the nightshade family can be good therapy for ulcers. Taking 1/4 teaspoon in 1 cup of hot water per day is all it takes.

Cabbage and its juice are also known for their ulcer-healing abilities. Researchers have found that ulcer patients who drink 1 quart of raw cabbage juice a day often heal their ulcers in five days. Those who eat cabbage also have quicker healing times, although not as dramatic as with the juice.

Garden produce rich in flavonoids may be helpful, too. Studies indicate that some bioflavonoids inhibit the growth of H. pylori. These compounds are also useful as anti-inflammatories. Eat red- and purple-colored foods, such as plums, berries, and red cabbage. Parsley and onions are also good sources. Garlic and licorice have also been shown to kill H. Pylori in test tubes.

Bilberry is used frequently in Russia to treat ulcers. It reduces inflammation in the stomach and intestines and protects their fragile mucous membranes. Calendula is also good for ulcers due to its wound-healing ability. It is slightly unpleasant to drink as tea; add calendula tincture to a pleasantly flavored beverage.
+++++

Intake of milk, water, and yes Honey is a good thing. Try evading eating acidic foods in excess kai mao man na mo aggravate sa imung stomach.

But from my knowledge of Nexium, it is used to treat GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) which is manifested by excessive gastrointestinal acid production (which is highly corrosive as our stomach acids are  diluted versions of hydrocholoric acid). Ate, I know that Nexium is used to treat esophogitis, do you have that problem? If so--you should talk to your doc about that.
Abi nimo, bleeding ulcers are caused by excessive acid production, however you have to take into consideration of primary, secondary and tertiary pathogenic infections; bleeding ulcers are caused by bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori which will embed itself in the tissues of the stomach--and if a ulcer breakage is manifested--can spread itself into the bloodstream. Did your doc also give you antibacterials to be taken with Nexium? Make sure that he properly diagnoses that you are suffering from only ulcers; because there is a possiblity of gastric infection.

Ate, I cannot give you medical counsel as I am not a licensed or board certified physician, my only advice is to see and talk to your physician as soon as possible. I would follow his recommendations, but if you are uneasy about proceeding with his directions, then it won't hurt you to see another doctor and see his/her prognosis on your condition. Please be safe, ha? Always take care of yourself.

Sige.
