Excellent!!

I am ecstatic on news such as this. I have always been a proponent of a tri-lingual Philippine educational system: Pilipino, English and Spanish.

We as a people must not forget Spanish as it is undeniable of our centuries old relations with Spain.

Our people are truly ahead of many educational systems in Asia. No other nation is as Europeanized as the Philippines. No other nation, besides (to an extent) India.
May we continue to be a shining star in Asia-Pacific. My obeiscance goes out to the proponents who passed this into law.

¡Felicitaciones! Gracias tanto por permitir esta ley. El español será una gran lengua para nuestra gente filipina. Las masas filipinas deben entender la historia y la importancia cultural de España. Compartimos una historia común y rica.

I had some of this last night. Glorious.

Einstein was a giant of a man, and what better a man he was to recognize his own frailties, imperfections, and futility in the face of a Great Spirit.

Even great scientists like Einstein bow before the greater power of the Most High.
Who Is because He wills it so.

Einstein best describes science as 'human reasoning to understand only the fragmentary of the TRUTH'.

December 13, 2007, 02:39:09 AM
I liked that video, Hazel. Very upbeat.

Its very interesting reading about the war dances of the Visayas--and in my side research (for fun ra ba, lol)  the region is rich in war dances. Some examples are the Warai-Warai war dance, the Maranao war dance, the Moro war dance etc. These oral and physical folktales are so intricate in telling a story--particularly in the tales of the realm prior to the advent of Spanish colonization.

In all of these war dances, none are so violent and ravenous as that of the Warai-Warai war dance. In the reading of 'Hizpanization of the Philippines' by Juan Leddy Phelan, the writer goes into specific detail about the Spanish conquistadores under the command of Sr. Don Legaspi leading a massive campaign into the deep jungles of then- Warai-dominated Leyte and Samar. Phelan describes in the book that when the Spanish conquistadores arrived in Leyte with the aid of their new Boholano and Cebuano allies, were shocked to see a war dance by the local Warai-Warai Raja--who cut his own hands with a bladed Kriss. The Conquistadores and their allies were numbered at no more than several hundred while the Warai forces totalled in the thousands (the Spaniards use this number to describe a massive number; the used the same context when describing their wars with the Aztecs, the Ahuatls and the Incas of Latin America as well). Nonetheless, the shear mass of Warai forces that clashed with the Conquistadores and their Boholano and Cebuano allies routed the enemy. Many conquistadores and their native allies were defeated outright. Forcing them to run for their Galleons. It wasn't until a later y ear when a larger Spanish force--aided with naval bombardment and more native allies---that the Warai Raja in present day central Leyte was defeated. The Raja died in battle--as documented in Phelan's book.

But even to this day, there are dances that commemorate the Spanish defeat to the Warai and their Raja. A very very violent people, the Warai were. It took years for the Spaniards to completely subdue Leyte and Samar---and even then--there were pockets of rebellions against Spanish sovereignty by Warai peoples. Spanish control in Leyte and Samar was only manifested only because the Spaniards gave the region complete autonomy. Leyte and Samar was governed and ruled by Gobernadorcillos and Principales that were themselves of Warai-Warai blood.

Interesting isn't it?

I never really knew how truly valiant and violent my father's people were. The first video captures in essence, the pure Warai-Warai war-like nature.

The Head Hunters

It sends chills to my bones just watching them dance like that...

Today was a good day, it was my last day of classes for this semester!!!!
So ends my 7th semester of undergraduate college---1 more to go until I graduate and proceed to Medical School proper. It was very sad in a way because I had to say goodbye to many of my friends who will be graduating this semester  :'(. I will truly cherish their friendship and all their good times with me.

Overall tho, It was a good day. This gives me ample time to study and review for the upcoming final examinations (this coming Tuesday and Wednesday). I decided to stop by my college mail box and I was surprised with a gift from a good good friend of mine here in Tubag Bohol.

It was a present from Ate Ging, a box of BEAUTIFUL home made cookies. I literally leaped for joy upon opening the box because it reminded me of my childhood days---with cookies LOL!!!!
Ate Ging, Salamaaaaaaaaat kaayo uy!!! I really really really am so grateful for your wonderful and loving gift. The card was beautiful, ha! Santa will also be coming to your house soon~~~~

I feel so happy karoon---and the blessings of friends, which is one of God's most loving miracles, has touched me dearly. I cannot begin to explain how very happy and touched I am.

Thank You So Much, Ate Ging!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The following is taken from an autobiography written by Albert Einstein.
Please note that Albert Einstein was a Jew, and one who never, in his life, denied the existence of God.
On the contrary, he was a firm believer. He was one of God's Chose people.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A child in the sixth grade in a Sunday School in New York City, with the encouragement of her teacher, wrote to Einstein in Princeton on 19 January I936 asking him whether scientists pray, and if so what they pray for. Einstein replied as follows on 24 January 1936:

I have tried to respond to your question as simply as I could. Here is my answer. Scientific research is based on the idea that everything that takes place is determined by laws of nature, and therefore this holds for the actions of people. For this reason, a research scientist will hardly be inclined to believe that events could be influenced by a prayer, i.e. by a wish addressed to a supernatural Being.

However, it must be admitted that our actual knowledge of these laws is only imperfect and fragmentary, so that, actually, the belief in the existence of basic all-embracing laws in Nature also rests on a sort of faith. All the same this faith has been largely justified so far by the success of scientific research. But, on the other hand, every one who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe â€" spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.

Book Reviews / Atheism: Twilight or Dawn
December 12, 2007, 02:20:00 PM
According to Alister McGrath, the early 21st century marks the decline of atheism. In this critique of McGrath's arguments, Keith Parsons considers whether the intellectual clout, stature, or influence of atheism has in fact declined in recent years, concluding that McGrath does not even begin to address the real intellectual case for atheism. That disbelief in God is just as much a matter of faith as belief in God can only be a stale platitude from McGrath given his failure to even superficially survey the best arguments for atheism. McGrath does address, however, four charges made by Richard Dawkins against religion, including the charge that evolution makes God unnecessary as an explanation and that religion is a source of much of the misery in the world. Parsons concludes that once one appropriately qualifies or refines Dawkins' accusations, McGrath's critique fails to adequately address the underlying problems for religion that inspire them. Moreover, to the extent that the influence of inherently controversial and divisive religions on people's lives grows, a corresponding dawn of the popularity of atheism is inevitable. This book is rather interesting and for those who wish to dig deep into the controversies of religious discourse, I suggest its reading. I recommend this book to those who are strong in faith--and those who wish to see and understand the opposing view of the religious spectrum.

Personal Remark: This book makes you question your faith, however, the book fails to answer the reasons for religion--whereas it digs primarily in the notion of religious harm. The book only served to strengthen my own faith.
#50357
What could science have in common with religion, when religion seems so irrelevant to the scientist? Yet, religion still has a firm hold on billions of believers worldwide, dealing with questions not answerable through the five senses. What happens to the soul? What is the nature of it, or the purpose of life? Is there a purpose to begin with? The race is still drawn to answers provided by religion and often cannot be shaken from them by criticism, even if some beliefs defy common sense, which is in itself very odd. Something instinctive in man seems to respond to the concept of worlds beyond the senses.

Agreement between religions

At the root, all religions agree, more or less, on the concept of an immortal soul, and a blissful state of awareness called "Heaven", "Nirvana", "Samadhi", etc., in which the mind makes contact with an immortal layer of its own true nature. Take away the dogma and you come down to the founders, all of whom had some kind of contact with what they considered a divine being, or a higher state, which they advised was only reachable by following a certain mode of life and code of conduct. But why? The answer is beautifully simple: because this is the mode of life natural to the ever-evolving brain. The brain responds either gradually over generations, or quickly in the case of individuals already biologically prepared in some way, and man becomes a co-operator with Nature's evolutionary processes, rather than a rebel, whose lifestyle invites resistance from Nature, and eventual degeneration.

A challenge for scientists everywhere

Science is now in a position to prove or disprove this, through a study of the brain! What is the gradual and immediate effect on the brain of a materialistic lifestyle? Study the characteristics of successive generations of wealthy families, or the prevalent mental condition of industrialised societies to see! We can't blindly adhere to rituals set out before man knew about electricity, bacteria, distant universes, and so on, because intellect has matured to the level of needing to understand such edicts. Hence the inbuilt downfall of a religion built on blind faith and ceremony. But there must be an essential truth in it somewhere: the roots of religions, to keep in mind the bond between all members of the race, and the duty owed to them, and the vast intelligence behind Nature, has a calming effect on the mind, and, therefore, on the activity of the brain. Powerful images and rituals can still be a stronghold against giving way to fear and doubt when struggling against adverse circumstances. For example, the peaceful Buddha with his hand raised, to dispel fear.

If the race is evolving to a higher state of awareness, there must be intermediary steps along the way, and everyone must be in a more or less advanced position along the path. This explains the difference between the mystic, the genius and the everyday mind. There's room for everyone. Is distorted evolution a cause of the frequent on-off mental anguish of the highly talented? Does such a brain require a more careful lifestyle? What is causing the springing up of psychopaths (simply put: a person born without moral conscience, estimated to number in 1 in every 200 individuals) in the western world? All of this and more can now be investigated by science...

It is this site's goal to bring this purpose in front of as many people as possible. I cannot think of a better task than to unite religions with science and with each other; to bring religion into the sphere of modern thought; to demonstrate that Nature is slowly trying to reshape the human brain for a multi-dimensional future consciousness, and that we should co-operate with this process, not damage our brains by defying it. All help, criticism, and contributions are very welcome.

Science and Research / BRAIN MAY GROW NEW CELLS DAILY

BRAIN MAY GROW NEW CELLS DAILY:

Princeton Study on Monkeys Challenges Long-Held View

by Nicholas Wade

++

In a new challenge to the long-standing belief that adults never generate new brain cells, biologists at Princeton University have found that thousands of freshly born neurons arrive each day in the cerebral cortex, the outer rind of the brain where higher intellectual functions and personality are centered.

Though based on research in monkeys, the finding is likely to prove true of people, too.  If so, several experts said, it may overturn ideas about how the human brain works and open new possibilities for treating degenerative brain diseases.

If the new brain cells, or neurons, are involved in memory and learning -- perhaps with each day's batch of new cells recording that day's experiences -- scientists will have to make major revisions in the long-time view that the adult brain's neurons are static in number and that memory is stored only in the way they interconnect.

In addition, if the brain's cells are in constant turnover, as the new finding suggests, physicians may discover ways to use the brain's natural regeneration system for replacing cells that are lost in diseases of ageing.

The discovery, by Dr Elizabeth Gould and Dr Charles G Gross, is reported in today's issue of the journal Science.

The belief that the adult brain does not make new cells rested on careful, well-known studies by Dr Pasko Rakic of Yale University, who looked for the formation of new neurons in the monkey brain and found none.

But the Princeton work is likely to be convincing, because it builds on previous reports of brain cell turnover, notably by Dr Fernando Nottebohm of Rockefeller University, who showed that canaries grow new neurons to learn new songs, and recent studies showing that new cells are formed in the hippocampus, a brain region where initial memories of faces and places are formed.

"The scientific community can easily believe something it is 50% ready to absorb, but not something that comes out of left field," said Dr Eric R Kandel, a leading neuroscientist at Columbia University.   "But here, we are prepared for it."

Dr Kandel compared the likely change in view to the paradigm shifts described by the historian of science Thomas Kuhn as occurring when one major scientific theory is replaced by another.

Although the new study was done in macaque monkeys and has yet to be confirmed in humans, as fellow primates monkeys are usually quite predictive of what occurs in people.

Dr Gould, who has studied new cell formation in the hippocampus, and Dr Gross, an expert on the cerebral cortex, injected macaques with a chemical that is incorporated in the new DNA formed when a cell divides.

They found that a stream of new neurons were generated in the monkey's brains in a zone just above the brain's fluid-filled central chambers.  This zone was recently identified by other scientists as the home of the brain's stem cells, the source cells from which an organ is replenished.

The new neurons migrated toward the cortex, matured and sent out axons to make connections with other brain cells, the Princeton biologists found.

The researchers looked for new neurons in four areas of the cortex, and found them in three areas where memories are known to be stored: the frontal cortex, used for decision-making, and two areas on the side of the brain used for visual recognition.  No new neurons were detected in the fourth area, the striate cortex, a region at the back of the head that simply processes visual information from the eyes and passes it on to other parts of the cortex.

Whatever the new cells are doing in the cortex, they affect regions of the brain that are central to human thought and identity.   The Princeton work, said Ronald D G McKay, an expert on brain stem cells at the National Institute of Health, "places new neurons in the region of the brain involved in the highest level of personality: it's the frontal cortex that is important in determining who you are in a very human way."

Dr Gould said that it was possible that the new neurons arriving in the cortex would be particularly sensitive to recording information for a certain period while they matured.

"They would become integrated in the circuitry and represent the information being learned at that particular time," she said, after which they would not record anything more.

In other words, the conveyor belt of new neurons might record successive days' experiences almost like a moving tape.

"We know the characteristic of memory is that events are tagged with times," Dr Gross said.  "We have no idea how that is done.  But since we have now shown there are new cells added every day, which cover a spectrum of ages, these cells could possibly provide the substrate for the temporal dimension of memory."

Dr Kandel, of Columbia University, said the idea was perfectly possible, given how little was now known about the brain's system for ultimate long-term memory storage.

"How do you distinguish the memory of 20 years ago from the memory of 30 years ago?  You would have to mark the birthday of the cell in some way," Dr Kandel said, suggesting that the train of new neurons offered a plausible mechanism whereby the brain might somehow be able to do this.

The notion that new memories are stored in a train of new nerve cells was advocated in the 1960's by Dr Joseph Altman, then of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  But his proposal was not widely accepted.   And when Dr Rakic, an authority on neuronic formation in the embryonic monkey brain, reported in 1965 that no new neurons were formed in the adult monkey's brain, this became the accepted view.

Even when Dr Gould and others showed recently that new cells were formed in the hippocampus, Dr Rakic argued that this was a primitive area of the brain -- even reptiles have a hippocampus -- and that brain organs acquired more recently in evolution, like the primates' cerebral cortex, would not be expected to behave the same way.

Dr Gould said it was this argument that had made her determined to look for new cells being formed in the cerebral cortex, despite the expense of doing work on monkeys and the risk in "redoing an experiment that a very well respected person," Dr Rakic, had already performed.

If indeed the brain is constantly renewing the cells in its cortex, hippocampus and maybe other areas, the prospects for learning how to repair the aged or damaged brain begin to look much more hopeful.

"Degenerative diseases of the brain are really defined by loss of nerve cells." Dr Kandel said.  Though diseases like Parkinson's affect specific areas of the brain, it might become possible to channel young new neurons into the areas of disease.  "This is pie in the sky," he said, "but at least there is now the possibility of thinking about it."

Dr William T Greenough, a neuroscientist at the University of Illinois, said the Princeton work created a "whole new ball game" for addressing brain diseases, by harnessing the brain's own restorative potential.

The Princeton biologists plan to follow up their discovery by blocking the formation of new neurons in monkeys' brains and seeing what happens.  If the new neurons are essential for memory and learning, then serious deficits should appear in the monkeys' performance.  The researchers as yet have no idea whether the loss of brain cells and the generation of new ones are separate events or part of the same cycle.

"Our discovery," Dr Gross said, "suggests more questions than answers."

I really love how both my Mom and Dad grew older with each other. From college classmates to husband-and-wife and father and mother. They both just celebrated their 23rd anniversary this past August 24th (they were married in 1984). Though they have their occasional fights--what marriage is free of fights--they still are much in love.
4 kids made witness to that love. LOL!!!!
Mo salut jud ko ni Dad ug ni Mom.

Only under extreme circumstances will you be allowed to change display name.

Reason: as pointed out by Asianfairy - ma-confused ta kon kinsa ni siya or kinsa to siya. Apil na ko na-confuse. Naglibog na kon kinsa akong mga higala kay nangausab na ang ngalan. Exchanging of thoughts and feelings must be sealed with definite, accurate identity.

From now on, finalize your display name. As long as Tubag Bohol exists in the web universe, you can no longer change your identity. This is to preserve our intimacy as real friends.

For Ginger, she cannot change her name to "Luy-a". This is just an example. :)

So....ever had a feeling of complete boredom while in your work place?
I had that exact feeling today---well aside from working and preparing samples in the Biology lab from 11 AM till 12 Midnight---thats right i was there for 13+ hours--I decided to take some pictures to kill some time. LOL. My only free time or Sanity time. But despite long boring hours---I'm quite satisfied in how progress has been attained.

Some of my little quandaries today...

Sediment strata being heated on hot plate; the mixture is of 0.1 g of sediment (rounded to 10^-4 accuracy), concentrated HCl(hydrochloric acid), HNO3(Nitric Acid), H2O2( Hydrogen Peroxide), DI(Distilled water). The total time it takes to prepare each sample vis-a-vis acid digestion is about 5-6 hours. Per Sample. Its extremely time consuming.

Another view of the 16 samples (my 2nd batch) that I finished today.

**Not to play at home, lol** Concentrated Nitric Acid---yea--can definitely burn a whole through laytex gloves.  8)

Some of my favorite chemicals, lol.  Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid and Sulfuric Acid. Both are necessary in acid digestion and preparatory steps prior to metals analysis.

35% Hydrogen Peroxide. This is necessary in effervescing the sediment sample; in addition to Hydrogen peroxide, I aliquoted DI (distilled H20) in order to allow hydrocarbonic mixture to liquidate the organic compounds within the Erlenmeyer flasks--its rather interesting as the reaction is rather violent---exothermic radiance.

Ah...yours truly trying to titrate each flask per 20 minute substandard. Its necessary to prevent crystallization from forming, particularly after adding the Nitric Acid.

Live Long and Prosper. LoL! A random moment... :P  8)

Reflux step. This step was immediately after adding H2O2 and HCl. Time it took to finish refluxing was about 2.5 hours. (Though strict regul. requires immediate cancellation after .5 of the intial volume repudiated vis-a-vis evaporative synthesis)

The container tubes---

The Lord Is Good

PSALM 32

I acknowledged my sin to you. I didn't hide my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord God, And you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

For this, let everyone who is godly pray to you in a time when you may be found. Surely when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach to him.

You are my hiding place. You will preserve me from trouble. You will surround me with songs of deliverance.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

Don't be like the horse, or like the mule, which have no understanding, Whose are controlled by bit and bridle, or else they will not come near to you.

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked, But he who trusts in Yahweh, loving kindness shall surround him.

Be glad in the Lord God, and rejoice, you righteous! Shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart!
