Beautiful Pain
RV Escatron

My eyes were still fixated on the remnants of the bonfire when she emerged naked from the water. Her pool-toned body formed a silhouette against the full moon.

“Here, take this towel. You might catch cold.” I offered.

She came near me, grabbed the towel and wrapped herself.

“The water is warm, you should try it.” She whispered, her breathing sent a tingling sensation in my earlobes, as water came dripping into my right shoulder, sliding down to my back.

“Later.” I answered her in a puppy-dog-eye look. Then smiled.

“Sorry to kept you waiting ha?”

“Not a problem.”

Earlier, straight from picking her at the city airport, I accompanied her scouring for bikinis and flip-flops at the only city mall. When she found nothing that suited her fancy, we headed to the grocery and rummaged through the wine and spirits section. Took a bottle of Bordeaux, a Scotch and two dozens of Pilsen. To complete the list, I took bars of dark chocolate and packs of fried cashew nuts, and she, not failing to remember my appetite for cheesecakes, ordered one from the bakeshop.

As I watched her joined the queue at the counter, I couldn’t help but be amazed with the changes in her. A lot. From the naïve college girl seven years back, she morphed into this high-strung woman I was with that Saturday afternoon. At thirty-one, she still maintained a body that could give a bikini open champ a run for her money.

“Santi?” she called.

“Coming, er, right up!” Caught off-guard, I stammered, trailed at her with two bottles in one hand and the chocolate and cashew on the other.

“We’re missin’ somethin’?” in a distinct NYC accent.

“Oh, yeah, I know it.” I smirked.

A bottle of Gilbey’s and limeâ€"the ultimate potion back in college when we had to stretch our meager allowance for a night of booze and god-knows-what. “We have this new flavor sir.” Interrupted the salesgirl. “There is also a premixed sir.” She persuaded in broken English. “No. Thank you Miss.” I still prefer the way we used to do it. It brings back the memoriesâ€"of the cold sea breeze whisking our faces, the sound of the palm leaves pelting each other.

The cab driver obliged to take us to Doljo Point.

“No news yet?” Reema was now in front of me. I nodded.

She wrapped herself. “So, I’ll just have to see you at the cottage later.”

“All right.”

And she blended with the darkness and underneath the thick foliage. “Lest I forget, the bed near the terrace door is mine!” I hollered, chancing if she still heard me.

At the taxi earlier, she started talking about her hiatus that made me puzzled for years. Not really much of a story. It was more like a teaser. She narrated about how her life went about. Sheltered in a hut in a famous town nestled in the mighty Cordillera. It fog there everydayâ€"that by two in the afternoon, transportation is at halt. Visibility is zero. One has to wait the next day. It was a life of simplicity and solitude, or so she thought. Then she met Abata-a native who went to the State University in Manila for college. He was the unconventional Igorot who worked for Murdoch and Bach Advertising in Makati.

There was hissing from my back. “Sant, this fleece blanket will keep us warm for the night.” She reached out for the last can of beer, squat beside me and lighted a cigarette. “Since when did you learn to smoke?” “You know how life is in the big city, duh.” She puffed and threw me the familiar look. Yes. Those eyes that smiled every time it meet mine. This couldn't be happening again. Must be the beer. Dang!

Smoke covered the space between us. "Care for a walk to that boulder Sant, what do you say?”

We opted to trail the dirt path. The illumination coming from the moon, partly hidden by the overcast, provided us enough light. We settled at the clearing below the boulder.

Pamilacan Island, a few nautical miles from where we crouched appeared obscure from afar. The chirping crickets provided us solace. While the romantic cycle of the waves that soaked our feet provided us comfort. It was a quarter past midnight.

Amid the stillness, I nursed my sixth can of beer. “Somehow, your alcohol tolerance has never gone down rock bottom, no? Geez.” She smirked. “Let's just put it on this term. Over the years, I did, but only seven.”

Like the bitter aftertaste of the first gulp, the memories of what transpired in the last eight years still lingered in my mind. But as drinking progressed, a sweet tangy sensation soon replaced it.

The areas that I will be visiting is not limited to Bohol, i will also be visiting my ancestral home of Pintuyan, Island (Leyte), Borgos, Surigao, CDO, Cebu and possibly Manila/Makati if time allows. Anyone planning to be back in that time? We should all meet up at a 4 star restaurant. My treat. :)

I wish Bohol had a great spread for a disco happening place?

As it is one must travel all the way to Cebu to dance the night away at Cebu's Sunflower. :D

let Bohol be, well, Bohol--away from all the chutzpa of Boracay.
it's the idyllic Bohol from sun up to sundown that draws the sophisticated lot to its distinct charm. The party crowd has Cebu anyway.

Small Hours of Monsoon
…after a photo, by the windmills of Bangui, Ilocos Norte

Like how, yesterday, you sift dust in our photograph

In these small hours, here in darkness,

Run your fingers in my back. Let each tip

Fathom the depth and muffled quietude of our soul.

Catch my breath as you please.

Let my tongue seek, slowly, for your earlobes,

“All night, tonight, we will make wild love…”

And when all is, piece by piece, button after button,

Reduced into our own nakedness, please go slow

As we swim into the regions of our being.

Let me flick the tinderbox and

Let the lamp glow in desire. “I want to see you in honeyed light.”

And when this is through, when the last stick of  Marlboro lights

Is puffed, ashes nudged, on the chequered tiles of this room

Please don’t leave.

Instead, keep those windows open,

Gather the curtains to the side.

Let me wrap my arms around you,

Let your head rest in my chest

And in the drizzle, in the stillness like in the eye of a storm,

Of this small hour, we stare at [the] windmills

As they glow in the thin moonlight

For every drop of rain on the tin roof,

It’s my wont not to let

This beautiful pain

Slip away.

And what about those smart Filipina girls who whip out snappy replies to turn down "unwanted men." Here are some of those crackling replies from a smart Filipina executive - who is still single.

He: "Can I buy you a drink?"
She: "Actually I'd rather have the money."

He: I'm a photographer. I've been looking for a face like yours.
She: I'm a plastic surgeon. I've been looking for a face like yours.

He: Hi. Didn't we go on a date once? Or was it twice?
She: Must've been once. I never make the same mistake twice.

He: How did you get to be so beautiful?
She:" I must've been given your share."

He: "Will you go out with me this Saturday?"
She: "Sorry. I'm having a headache this weekend."

He: "Go on, don't be shy. Ask me out."
She: "Okay, get out."

He:"I think I could make you very happy.
She: "Why? Are you leaving?"

He: "What would you say if I asked you to marry me?
She: "Nothing. I can't talk and laugh at the same time."

He: "Can I have your name?"
She: "Why? Don't you already have one?"

He: "Where have you been all my life?"
She: "Hiding from you."

He: "Haven't I seen you some place before?
She: Yes. That's why I don't go there anymore.

He: "Is this seat empty?
She: Yes, and this one will be if you sit down.

He: So, what do you do for a living?
She: I'm a female impersonator.

The actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, however, didn't have such problems. "I never hated a man enough to give his diamonds back," she explained the comedian Groucho Marx had a different perspective: "I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury."

Winston Churchill, however, waxed philosophical about men-women tiffs. "Don't worry about avoiding temptation," he counseled. "As you grow older, it will avoid you." And Billy Crystal agreed saying: "By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere.

Pilar - Bohol / Twin toddlers drown in well
November 18, 2007, 02:11:23 PM
By KIT BAGAIPO

One-year and 11-month old twins died after drowning in a deep well Monday morning in barangay San Isidro, Pilar town.

Justin and Jansen Matunhay were to celebrate their birthdays next month until their tragic death.

According to the twin's father Martin Matunhay, Justin and Jansen were left to the care of their 10-year old brother John Philip as he had to work at their farmland together with his wife.

The victims' father said John Philip failed to notice that his brothers had walked outside of their house while the older boy was watching television.

The twins purportedly walked to the family-owned deep well just a few meters from the house.

Responding police of the Pilar PNP Station said the twins were found embracing each other while floating lifeless in the deep well.

The well was around 10-meters deep from the ground and was almost filled with water that time due to heavy rains, according to police.

Nearby residents reportedly heard the twins crying but never thought that they fell off the well which has no cover.

Rescuers tried to bring the victims to the Municipal Health Office but was declared dead by Dr. Ma. Luisa Tago.

Police said there was no foul play in the death of the Matunhay twins.

In an effort to conserve energy, reduce storm water runoff and deflect heat, the roof of Chicago City Hall has been transformed into a brilliant garden.

Anne Ryan / Polaris

Need to Weed Your Roof?

Thursday, Nov. 08, 2007 By JEFFREY KLUGER

The best thing you can say about the roofs of most city buildings is that you don't have to look at them much. That's very good, since an urban landscape viewed from above can be an unlovely thing--block after block of tarred black rooftops, sticky in the summer, windswept in the winter, ugly year-round. Or at least that's the way it used to be.

But urban roofs are going green. Environmental designers looking for new ways to soften cities have begun to realize that the tops of buildings don't have to be wastelands. Indeed, they can be gardens, planted with grasses, flowers and shrubs that control temperature, conserve water and clean the air. A newly published paper in the journal BioScience reveals just how much good green roofs can do.

A planted roof usually comes in one of two varieties: extensive or intensive. The extensive type is wide and shallow, with a soil depth of less than 8 in. (20 cm), able to support smaller plants. The intensive type may be smaller, but it's deeper and home to larger plants. Whatever the design, green roofs are a lot more complicated than ordinary gardens. They have multiple layers beneath the soil, including a filter membrane, a drainage layer, waterproofing, insulation and structural support.

But this elaborate infrastructure can do a great deal of good. The BioScience paper, which aggregated years' worth of other studies, reported that green roofs can cut heat loss from a building 50%, reduce air-conditioning costs 25% and reduce the so-called urban-heat-island effect--the tendency of cities to retain heat--by 3.6ºF (2ºC).

Green roofs are by no means limited to the city, but it's in cities that they're needed the most. Chicago already has more than 2.3 million sq. ft. (214,000 sq m) of rooftops planted, and more are on the way. Other rapidly greening U.S. cities include Washington; New York City; Phoenix; Kansas City, Mo.; and Portland, Ore.

Of course, for all the square feet greened and heat reduced, there is one less quantifiable metric that argues even more persuasively for the value of the green roof: the psychological boost that city dwellers can gain simply by having a quiet place to go, far above the churn of the streets. As so often happens, what's good for the planet can also be good for the spirit.

Health and Food / British Airways: No to Surfers
November 13, 2007, 06:01:34 PM
UNYA, asa na man ibutang ang akong sorfboard?!? MEOWW! LOL

British Airways' abrupt decision last week to reverse its generous policy for some sports enthusiasts traveling with their equipment has outraged the world surfing community. As of today, passengers are banned from checking surfboards, kayaks, canoes or wind surfing boards. BA's decision is what surfers might call a roundhouse cutback â€" a 180 degree shift in direction â€" from their original policy that still allows passengers to bring most sporting goods free, including golf clubs and bags, skis and snowboards.

World No. 1 surfer, Australian Mick Fanning said, "As a British Airways Platinum One World frequent flyer, it's really hard to take that people who have been so loyal, and spent so much money with BA have been dealt this blow." The British Canoe Union, which supports the 1.5 million U.K. residents who canoe and kayak is similarly alarmed. In a statement, it wrote, "We are concerned about the irony of 2008 being Olympic year. Our athletes will need to transport their equipment to pre-Olympic events, training camps and to the Olympics themselves in Beijing, China. This will significantly limit our athletes' ability to prepare for important events. And it will have further significant implications as we head towards the London 2012 Olympics." Newly crowned European long board champion and English champion Ben Skinner is also raising his voice in protest, saying, "As part of the British team I have always traveled with BA. I think it's a disgrace that they have thrown this ban back at us. BA seems to have totally underestimated the amount of business they stand to lose."

BA spokesman, Richard Goodfellow isn't so sure about that. Despite the uproar, he says, the airline is not considering changing its decision. "If you look at it as a percentage," he says, "the numbers of surfers that are traveling is tiny, miniscule."

Several airlines that serve high-profile surfing destinations such as South Africa and Australia are poised to gain BA's lost customers â€" and none is ready to follow suit with BA by banning surfboards. BA's reversal is particularly drastic: going from allowing these items for free to banning them entirely, while other airlines like Qantas, SAA, Delta and American charge extra for surfboards and similar equipment and will continue to do so.

A South African Airways spokeswoman says, "There won't be any decision to follow in BA's footsteps. For us, every passenger is essential. We would never take a standpoint to alienate such a large population of our travelers." A Qantas spokesperson told TIME, "We have no plans to change our existing arrangements." Virgin Atlantic, well regarded in the surfing community, and always eager to land a dig at British Airways announced today that it was expanding the types of sporting goods it would allow on board for free. "Virgin Atlantic continues to be the airline for sports enthusiasts, unlike others who are doing everything they can to prevent the gold medalists of the future transporting their equipment," it said in a statement. As long as the equipment complies with size and weight allowances, Virgin Atlantic travelers can check their diving equipment, golf equipment, fishing equipment, hang gliders, skis, surfboards, windsurfing boards, booms and sails, bicycles, paragliders, canoes and kayaks all free of charge. One roundhouse cutback deserves another.

Yup. There is. My cousin plays soccer in CPG Sports Complex every afternoon. There is a group, I suppose, that regularly meets there.

Meanwhile, good soccer summer clinics are aplenty in Cebu. Phil Younghusband of Manchester United used to play in the Cebu International School Team.

The school where I teach, HOME OF THE BEST SOCCER TEAM in CEBU, also conducts Verano Boys Club from April to May. It's a clinic for sports and hobbies, from soccer to painting and is open to everyone.

You may get in touch with the coordinator in April. By then, the programs are nailed already.

HI RV,

This poem touches a chord and resonates to an experience of brokenness in my distant, youthful past. I read this as a love poem, specifically a heartbreak poem. The poet seems to suffer from guilt in the failed relationship.

Though I am not as gifted a poet as you, I remember writing this poem during a deep low in my untethered days.

My heart has a dark shadow

Let me not run anymore

For I've covered enough distance

Trading passion for another passion

In a Sysiphean struggle that sees the shadow

Expanding rather than receding

With every place I go

Then I'll still have a place

That's not engulfed in any shadow

Where I can turn back to face the shadow

That makes my heart seek love

But doesn't know how to give it back

Because impenetrable, it can love only itself

Here's to the Bohemian wild child days Benelynne! Yay! :)

concealing

I might have sulked in your presence

                                 and concealed the canvas

with the stained white sheets that you covered

the dinner table with

                       last night.

I might have allowed myself to get drowned

                                          to the pelting rain,

picked up the paint brush buried in Van Gogh’s hues

in the old paint can and splattered the dead-end

of my stroke

                but I hadn’t.

I have refused to do any of those

since your return to this room even if

the candle ran through of its brief, delightful existence

for again, we have chosen to be like strangers

swamped in the tension of silence

like the animosity of brushstrokes

in the stained canvas

I have left

                                       hanging.

But isn't it that poem are supposed to be like this -- one which the reader can relate to personally and draw his/her own interpretation or experience? The poem is so real to the reader that one  could very well consider it as one's very own?

*blink*  *blink*   ;D

In so many ways, poetry is like that. Once the poem is published, it doesn't belong to the poet anymore, it belongs to the reader. And the reader builds his own meanings from his own set of experience.

Ideally, what the meanings the poet intends to convey should be the same with that of the reader. Somehow, we have different ways of looking at things, and by ambiguity, by suggesting something, we enrich the meaning of the work.

A reader has no responsibility to read or continue reading a poem or whatsoever. I'm glad you are able to get into the poem and consider it as your own.

Salamat Sano!

Spooling the Lights

Who’s going to spool the (series) lights that you’re gone?

The cobwebs are tweaking the branches

And the icicles are falling, one by one, to one side.

The dinner is cold,

and the windows are open--

yet it bars the satin moonlight from crawling

in the dust, into this roomâ€"plank after plank of this floor

where I lay on my back.

By the doorway, the gauze curtains sweep a dead leaf

to the beat, to the beat of my heart.

The empty whisky glass is rolling and my mouth is parched.

Look now, Miranda.

Who’s going to spool those lights and gather the stars back into their box?

The cellar is still damp and it’s almost another Christmas.

Another Morning But He Wakes Up with a Different Hangover

There is something about how the sound of surf, this morning,

reminds him of his Eve Ensler

each lapping displaces pages of memories,

of that summer afternoon

on their cottage by the hill

the summer she left like the windswept leaf that dances by his windowsill

for the first time in years, those memories

refuse to cling on his head like a hangover.

When the Duplicate Key of Another Flat Doesn't Fit
Anymore

After she handed him the daily paper,

she makes herself a coffee cup,

out of habit than by heart.

In her head, she is a cappuccino cup in another flat...

After her husband left for office,

                                        she bangs the kitchen door

and slips the secret key in her bag

not knowing the one she thought had waited

has changed the lock.

The long  break is not complete without new sights to discover in the island.

Sure enough, my robust passion for off-the-touristy path and daredevil speed in the high road brought me to a secluded waterfalls in Candijay, Bohol. I had to walk barefoot for two-hours in mud and puddle (half-rice paddies and half in the jungle-like reserve just before the waterfalls) The little waterfalls, about five of them, were a sight to, well, appreciate as I went up the river until the mighty Can-umangtad waterfalls.

Days after the visit, over beer, my younger brother narrated that it was the area of a shoot-out between the rebels and the military not so long ago. The barrios in the border are said to be rebel-infested. Yay!

Small wonder why the place was so Jurassic. The 2 km. radius was untouched.

Dr. M. Victoria Carpio-Bernido and Dr. Chris Bernido

upperclassmen

What's revolutionary about the School?

First off, the force behind the school is not your ordinary Pinoy couple. Dr. Chris Bernido (Director od Studies) and Dr. Marivic Bernido (Principal) earned their degrees in physics in UP-Diliman and their Ph.D degrees in Theoretical Physics in New York State University, Albany. Both were connected with the UP National Institute of Physics (Dr. Chris was Director) and were awarded "Outstanding Teachers" when they resigned in 1999.

Next is DLP or Dynamic Learning Program which aims to address the current problems we have in education--considering the brain brain and the competence of most of the country's teachers today. The academic performance of its students is a proof. It should be noted that majority of the students are children of farmers and fisherfolks--that translates to less than Php5000 as annual tuition fee. Weekly payroll also served as a challenge.

Last but not least, it gets to host a triennial conference in Theoretical Physics with Nobel Prize winners as speakers, without support from the government.

some of it's icing:
-a former UP President and emeritus professor as one of its students,
-two Nobel Prize winners as speakers when it hosted its triennial Conference in Theoretical Physics
-esteemed academic institutions like DLSU-Manila and Poveda among others, as visitors.

All along, in my province' gateway to Mindanao is an institution that boost of global standards in education.

The Blast!

When everything was set, I couldn't contain my excitement.

I was drafted as a part of the advance party to visit the Central Visayan Institute or CVI. Finally, I get to meet the Bernidos. (The school where I am currently connected plans to bring the Academic Council sometime in March. Its sister school, PAREF Southridge in Alabang had it late last year.)

The town is located 63 kilometers east of Tagbilaran City. The supposedly one-hour ride became three hours due to the ongoing road improvement. The two long (about 30 minutes) stops were near the blasting sites. The boulders were a freaken sight. Vehicles had to queue while waiting for the road to be cleared of debris. For the most part, the ride was bumpy.

The drag and drear of the drive dissipated as Dr. Chris greeted us and entertained our questions in the Advanced Physics library. Moments later, Dr. Marivic joined.

WORKSHOP ORGANIZERS
Christopher C. Bernido (RCTP) M. Victoria Carpio-Bernido (RCTP)

The 5th Jagna International Workshop organized by the Research Center for Theoretical Phyics (RCTP), Central Visayan Institute Foundation, has a threefold-aim:

* To investigate the possible areas where recently developed analytical tools from physics and mathematics can be applied to gain a deeper understanding of biomolecular systems;
* To provide a forum for interdisciplinary research collaboration in the physical and life sciences;
* To honor Professor Ludwig Streit and Professor Frederik W. Wiegel on the occasion of their 70th birthday, in appreciation of their scientific contributions to physics, mathematics and biophysics, and their generous support for the RCTP.

WORKSHOP SITE
The RCTP is located in the small coastal town of Jagna in the southern part of the island province of Bohol. Situated in the Central Visayas Region of the Philippines, this island is known for its white beaches, diving sites, the Tarsier, and the Chocolate Hills, as well as its rich cultural and historical heritage. The town of Jagna has a port which connects it to several neighboring provinces by sea. Jagna is a one hour and fifteen minutes drive from Tagbilaran. There are several direct daily flights from Manila to Tagbilaran, and fastcrafts to Tagbilaran from Cebu by sea. Manila and Cebu are international gateway cities.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
The scientific sessions of the Workshop will be from 3 to 5 January 2008. Talks will be at the pedagogical level (with graduate students and young Ph.D.’s as the target audience), review level, and recent research results. There will be an optional tour of some sites in Bohol on 6 January 2008.

PARTICIPATION
Applications for participation should be sent to M. V. Carpio-Bernido of the RCTP at the latest by 30 November 2007. Selected contributed papers are also welcome but must be communicated to the organizers by 30 October 2007.

WORKSHOP FEE
The Workshop fee of US $ 65 includes cost of registration and materials, lunch and refreshments during coffee breaks for 3 days, and the conference dinner.

WORKSHOP PROCEEDINGS

The Proceedings of the Workshop will be published. Instructions to contributors on the preparation and submission of camera-ready manuscripts will be given during the Workshop.

ACCOMMODATION
Participants who need help in the reservation of accommodation should communicate with the organizers, at the latest by 30 November 2007. There are pension houses near the workshop site. Their contact numbers are: 63-38-2382-398 for Garden Café IDEA Pension House; 63-38-2382-127 for Domene Kaw; and 63-918-4062-991 for DQ Lodge. The first two numbers refer to the country code. Room rates per night range from US $ 20 to US $ 25 (Exchange rate: US $ 1 ? PhP 46).

There are a couple of tennis courts available as tennis is a favorite sport of the townsfolk. A few hills in the town are within easy hiking distance. Small beach resorts are also nearby.

TRAVEL INFORMATION
Since January is peak travel season in the Philippines, we advise an early flight reservation, most especially for participants from outside the Philippines. Manila and Cebu City (Mactan) are international gateway cities and can be the port of entry to the Philippines.

There are several direct daily flights from Manila to Tagbilaran (Bohol). The flight takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes. The websites of the airlines that fly to Tagbilaran are www.philippineairlines.com for Philippine Airlines (PAL), and www.cebupacificair.com for Cebu Pacific Airlines. There are also fastcrafts to Tagbilaran from Cebu by sea, which takes about two hours. The names of the fastcrafts are OceanJet, www.oceanjet.net , and Weesam Express, www.weesamexpress.com .

From Tagbilaran, Jagna is a one hour and fifteen minute coastal drive. Taxis are available (for around US $ 28), and may be contacted by phone: 038-411-2548 for Varescon; 038-411-4068 and 038-235-5806 for Caveman Taxi. The first three digits refer to the area code of Bohol.

The town of Jagna has a port which also connects it to several neighboring provinces by sea.

VISA

1. Adlaw: Imong gi hulat ang saktong takna sa pag salop sa adlaw.
2. Pinikas: Focus kaayo ug well defined ang subject. Walay glare bisan udtong totok ang kuha.
7. Waiting Shed to Cortes Church: Mao ni akong gi biliban nga shot. Gawas nga refreshing iyang foliage, as in paraiso, totoki ninyo ang mga elements: a.) Sunlight nga mi lusot sa mga dahon. Murag afterlife or out of the body experience ang scenario. Like a bright light nga mi tawag kanimo. b.) Stairs going up: Murag stairs paingon sa langit paingon adtong bright light. c.) Waiting Shed: Murag usa ka lugar nga didto ikaw magahulat nga pagatawgon imong ngalan sa adlaw sa paghukom.
8. Cortes Church: Na capture nimo ug well defined ang Spanish Architecture.

Once again well done.
