mariculture is a promising industry in Bohol.

For a long time, fishing has remained a backward practice, where man hunts fish to eat. Man has successfully domesticated animals for his consumption, but there is not much in teh area of fisheries even if it has been proven that fish culture has become a global trend.

I just wonder why with all the recent technologies and the great water quality in Bohol, not much of out leaders have thought of it, until recently?

Lets all go beyond the medieval age to modern times, Shall we not?

thanks call. hmm.. i wonder who can explain this. all my life Limasawa ako nahibaw-an..

There is an islet in Butuaqn called Masao, or something, this is where Butuanons claim  the first mass was.

They supported this claim with the recent archaeological diggings there which has unearthed an old boat.

Anyway, Butuan is aggressively making sure that record of Limasawa is corrected.

Personally, Limasawa still is the most strategic island that could be the venue of the first mass in honor of Saint Lazarus, the first day the spaniards shouted "Land Ahoy" after a long seamless ocean journey.

My theory is this.

Limasawa is right between Surigao and Southern Leyte. Butuan is still way inside the channel.

After a long journey without seeing land, common sense would tell us that the first sight of land and a place for anchorage would be an oasis of sorts. If you were  the captain would you bypass Limasawa and go to a very small Masao?

the local grapevine here tells about the hubby and their kid catching the wife and somebody high at the Capitol with their pants down inside a city hotel.

Of course beating the s*** out of her is senseless of a husband.

But if other mayors would know that the relationship has literally outwitted them off the tracks in getting Capitol engineering equipment and priority in local roads, they not like it. I am praying they dont.

grazie7y,

the clarity of the st. Michael painting shows it may not be a Ray Francia anymore.

Try comparing it with other Ray Francia paintings like in Anda, Cortes, Alburquerque and Talibon and you will see the difference in style.

The way i see it, it has to be a work restored by a local artist, my best guess is by Rosalio Ortiz, a guy who beat Botong Francisco in a national competition in Manila in the early sixties.

Ortiz, along with another Boholano painting icon Ric Ramasola chose to hide in the anonimity of Bohol and is now in Jagna.

My studies of local church restorations in Bohol also showed Ortiz being commissioned in Loay, and if you would be able to peek at the ceilings in the Trinity Church, you may have to agree with me that the Jagna St. Michael is not a Cebuano artist's work but by a Sano who chose to be a nobody despite his amazing skill.

Bohol Latest News / Re: Militant Farmers in Bohol
January 20, 2009, 05:46:05 PM

just last week, the Governor again gave another set of P1 million pesos to cooperatives all over BOhol.

So far, there has not been any result of the investigation and the people are starting to believe that big fishes at the Capitol are involved and yet since there is this need for the governor to project a good image for his bid in 2010, he has to release the funds.

So his lieutenants could again pocket some? or so he could easilly hide the money as another campaign kitty?

Just asking...

Talk of the Town / Re: Spike of Rice Price in Bohol
January 20, 2009, 08:30:49 AM
Nothing to worry on the
reported rice shortage

THERE is nothing to worry despite the noted rise in rice market price.

Assuring Boholano listeners at the weekly Kapihan sa PIA, two of Bohol’s key rice industry observers said Bohol in fact has enough stockpile of rice when it raised its sufficiency level from 86% to about 110% in the last cropping season.

Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center Manager Engr. Eugene Cahiles in fact said he is still positive that this cropping season would be generally good for Bohol.

Citing available data from his office, Engr Cahiles said Bohol has released about 25,000 bags of hybrid and certified rice the whole year, but in the single cropping season in November of last year, they have released 22,000 bags.

“Barring any abnormal situation, we are expecting a good harvest and it should even raise our sufficiency level much higher,” Cahiles said.

With an average farm production of about 3.5 tons per hectare, the 22,000 bags would be yielding roughly 66,000 tons for this cropping season alone.

Meanwhile, National Food Authority assistant manager Ma. Fe Evasco bared that the rise in prices is still within normal limits, citing that the buying price is 17 per kilo and a trader would have to spend for the processing.

At P17.00 a kilo, a trader would have to sell it at P34.00 a kilo, but the prices at the markets are still below P30, she pointed out.

Well, maybe the dwindling stockpile brought about by the beginning of the planting season has caused it, Evasco said, referring to the price increase.

But, we are still seeing harvests ongoing, a fact that happened with the non-synchronized planting season in Bohol.

Last week, the country’s International Rice Research Institute speculated another round of rice crisis owing to the credit crunch that could be the effect of the global economic meltdown.

But with the full support of the government through the Department of Agriculture, Engr. Cahiles believes a rice shortage in Bohol is far from reality.

We still have a pending rice shipment ban as effected by the governor’s executive order, Cahiles said.

Aside from that, we are still buying rice from Mindanao, plus the regular NFA rice shipment is still in effect, so a rice shortage in Bohol is far off, he assured.

Bohol to host Asian
learners in Danajon

DANAJON double barrier reef and its islands communities would be an open environmental classroom of sorts for 27 Asian youth who would be in this March 25 for the Voyage of the Future 2009 edition.
Voyage of the Future is a bi-annual activity where students from participating Asian countries immerse in communities and ecosystems. It allows them to study the environment and hopefully engage them in future protection and preservations programs, explains Japanese Masao Midaira through an interpreter.
The activity is also documented for a television show in Japan through NHK, Japan’s largest television network, he added.
In the Philippines, NHK ties up with the country’s National Broadcasting Network to help in documenting the learning experiences.
After a tour among Asian countries in the past, Voyage comes to the Philippines where the learning areas would be in Puerto Galera, Danajon reef in Bohol and Apo Island in Negros Oriental.
Elated over the prospect of hosting the event, Governor Erico Aumentado and Talibon Mayor Juanario Item met with Midaira at the Jayvee Long Island Resort in Mahaba Island Talibon yesterday, January 17 to fine tune the coordination activities for the event.
The governor has been insistent in promoting the protection and conservation of the Danajon even staking his political career by relentlessly urging local governments to pursue activities against illegal; fishing, poaching and abuse of the unique ecosystem.
The resort in Mahaba Island of the inner barrier reef in Danajon would be billeting station for the students and television crew for the event.
“We are expecting about 70 students and television crew plus technical staff to come to Mahaba Island during the event, Mayor Item said as he guided the governor to the recent building activities in the resort to accommodate the students and guests.
Four of the eleven days Voyage would be spent in Bohol, the rest would be in Puerto Galera or Apo Island, and the time spent in transit, organizers said.
In Bohol, the Asian students from the Philippines, Japan, China, Thailand, Qatar, Mongolia and Indonesia study the coral reefs and the ocean environment, and with Danajon as a rare double barrier reef, it should be a very interesting Voyage segment, admits Midaira.
Through a Filipino interpreter, Midaira who is a Japanese television producer for the Voyage said that students should be able to learn from the communities how population has affected the marine environment.
“In this Voyage segment, we’d like to showcase how people and government do to preserve, conserve and protect the ecosystem,” he shared.
The Bohol activity would center on immersion activities to let students learn about sustainable island life, mangrove and its ecosystem, seahorses, gleaning, coastal watch operations, island alternative livelihood, traditional fishing and would be filled with lectures and interactive activities as supervised by marine biologists from the University of the Philippines.
The Danajon, the only one double barrier reef in Asia occupies 273 square kilometers of seas and is shared by four provinces of Cebu, Leyte, Bohol and Southern Leyte, Governor Aumentado told the Japanese producer and NBN producer Edgar Reyes.
The governor also promised the NHK and NBN support by committing Bohol resources that he could use to make the activity a reality.

Bohol Latest News / Re: Bohol Buys Coaster
January 14, 2009, 05:09:03 PM
on its trial run yesterday, Chinese guests who took the coaster for a tour were literally given the treat they did not expect.

The new coaster's air conditioning apparently did not work.

Or General Services Office authority Engr. Ariel Dominguez said the coaster was on its first run and has not had any preventive maintenance scheduled.

And just as i thought, somebody commented, perhaps the driver does not know how to operate the aircon. Oh my!

At any rate, it was good the guests were Chinese children who may not have the gall to complain or complain, they may have but they could not say it quite well because of the language barrier.

But it is still the same. wawawa

Talk of the Town / Deadly Cortes Market Stalls
January 14, 2009, 10:51:42 AM
Cortes, a town that is struggling to make a pink identity has come out recently with few government infrastructure projects.

Aside from painting the town pink (ingon si Mayor Jasmin Balistoy nga to commemorate cancer awareness), even the trees at the plaza, the garbage compactor, all public school buildings have the pink paint. Recently, the local government has renovated the market stalls. And yes, they too are pink.

Anyway, there could probably be nothing wrong with using pink as motiff.

What is terribly disturbing  is that the market stalls, thse new government projects do not comply with the national standards.

The stalls, made out of concrete only has one door. Obviously the entrance would also be the fire exit, contrary to the mandates of the National Building Code. This has made the Cortes market stalls fire traps, but they do not trap fire, they trap people.

One can simply see this as one passes by the town market.

Asked why the mayor (who flaunts her being a civil engineer) has allowed it, she said this should discourage stall occupants and tenants to stay overnight on these stalls.

In her words, i could actually glean two things. One, she doesnt give a damn if the law is broken as long as no one stays overninght in these structures. Two, she could not impose discipline and probably could not enforce what the  tenants contract would stipulate.

And when this happens, the easiest way is to play safe. Only one door. No more.

And when a fire breaks, all patrons in a stall would have to jam through that door, the unlucky ones would be grilled.

And the Bureau of Fire Protection, what has it done? Actually, i do not know, but i guess BFP has not really seen the blueprints, because had they, i know it would never be allowed.

So here we are, patrons of an internet cafe in Cortes Public Market, making sure we get the last PC near the door, because come any spark, i would definitely go through that door well ahead.

One more sad thing, next to this internet cafe is a stall that has become a stockpile for Liquified Petroleum Gas!

Oh, my!  Is this the reason why it has to be painted pink, as in cancer? that deadly?  Just asking.

Now its settled Mike.

The Bureau of Fire Protection has just released its after-investigation reports about the fire that damaged property of the commentator Bachoy Alba.

BFP said a bonfire earleir which was not totally extinguished and the kidling left unattended was the cause of the "arson" that Bachoy immediatelt brought to the radio studio.

And donations, from poor Boholanos like us who were made to believe by him that it was the work for some hitmen came pouring in.

Now, i would have wanted him to release the same report to the same program he used to malign innocent people he slanted during his programs.

But, obviously he would never do that.

he would rather make sure that the BFP was wrong. How he would do that, he has a yearlong of a radio program to devise his ploy.

And then we would believe. as always.

NEW RULES FOR EMPLOYMENT

Dear STAFF,

Please be advised that these are NEW rules and regulations implemented to raise the efficiency of our firm:

Transportation: It is advised that you come to work driving a car according to your salary. If we see you driving a Honda, we assume you are doing well financially and therefore you do not need a raise. If you drive a 10-year old car or taking public transportation, we assume you must have lots of savings therefore you do not need a raise. If you drive a Pickup, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a rest.

Sickness and related leave: We will no longer accept a doctor statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

Surgery: Operations are now banned. As long as you are an employee here, you need all your organs. You should not consider removing anything. We hired you intact. To have something removed constitutes a breach of employment.

Bereavement leave: This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend to the arrangements. In rare cases, where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early, provided your share of the work is done.

Your own death: This will be accepted as an excuse. However, we require at least two weeks notice, as it is your duty to train your own replacement.

Restroom use: Too much time is being spent in the restroom. In the future, we will follow the practice of going in alphabetical order. For instance, all employees whose names begin with "A" will go from 8:00 to 8:10, employees whose names begin with "B" will go from 8:10 to 8:20, and so on. If you're unable to go at your allotted time, it will be necessary to wait until the next day when your turn comes again. In extreme emergencies, employees may swap their time with a co-worker. Both employees' supervisors must approve this exchange in writing. In addition, there is now a strict three-minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, and the stall door will open.

Annual Leave: Each employee will receive 104 Annual Leave days a year - they are called Saturdays and Sundays.

Lunch Break: Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch as they need to eat more so that they can look healthy. Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure.. Fat people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that is all the time needed to drink a Slim Fast and take a diet pill.

Thank you for your loyalty to our company. We are here to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore, all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, frustrations, irritations, aggravations, insinuations, allegations, accusations, contemplations, consternations, or input should be directed elsewhere.

Have a nice week,

The Management

This morning, i had the chance to get to the local Land Transportation Office to claim my plastic license card.

And the sheer number of people standing in front of the office immedaitely told me that there has never really been a clear understanding by LTO officials of who and what fixers are. Or they choose to ignore?

One of the LTO's top priorities is to make the office ISO certified. And they think fixers at theri gates can make it faster?

As soon as i alit my motorcycle, somebody, who i also saw last year and the year before that met me and asked if i was to get a registration. Waht if i was, could he fix it for me?

LTO has said they have rid of the fixers. Then who are these people outside?

Maybe LTO does not know or do not have any idea how to totally box fixers out of their "big" businesses.

Let me propose a system.

When i saw a guard there posted at the steps before the counters, he could be more useful if he screens all documents and people getting in.

He has to get the documents and see if the person bringing it is the same guy reflected on the document. Ant discrepancy, a Special Power of Attorney should be required. That way, a "fixer" could still find a profitable business if he could get an SPA upon wilfull consent of the document owner. At least this way, the owners know he would be consenting to the huge deductions a fixer can put up.

And that way, the guard can rid of his arrogance in shouting at clients who come to the office personally to make sure their money do not get into fixers pockets.

Well, maybe, just maybe, the guard and some LTO people still manages to run these fixers, if they can not rid of this simple problem?

So what is it, Sir Joel? Maloloy-on ra ka kaayo? Oh, come on,

Bohol Latest News / RICE CRISIS circa 2009?
January 10, 2009, 03:57:23 PM
I just came from the Cortes Public market, to heed the advice of my close friends. They said, in all public markets in Bohol, or near Tagbilaran, Cortes has the cheapest best buy youll be able to find.

True enough, i did manage to find 28 per kilo when the going pice during the rice crisis was P34.

Last Saturday, camia rice was sold at P24 a kilo.

Hoping to get just the same price or maybe slightly higher with a fiesta barrelling through the town, i was a bit astounded.

Just when the government has parctically declared rice shortage over, Cortes market vendors have sold the same Camia Rice at P26. Now.

I asked why such a jump. The vendor said its because the same rice has gone out of Bohol, to Colonade and has to be transported back to be sold here.

I was thinking, so we were made to pay for the transporation costs that Marcela Farms has to spend to send rice to Cebu and back?

In the first place, did we ask Marcela to ship it out?

If such were  true, how powerful can they be when they can manipulate the price at their whims?

A looming rice crisis is going to happen again in Bohol, courtesy of some individuals making sure they can cash on the need for the staple food.

And if the government can not do something baout it, let me ask, who will?

Honestly, wala ko kapugong pagkatawa sa ako nabasa from page 1 to the last.

I did attempt to pick out the salient points and realized all are basically talking about the AGora being completed finally and that it was badly done.

Some said the area could have been a good greenbelt area, or one devoted to a public restroom. Perhaps a greenbelt with a restroom. And a parking lot.

BUt the way i saw it, the Agora has been an abandoned unfinished eyesore since Madam Purita Soliven decided she could make a pheonix out of the burnt market building.

But she did have only the funds enough to erect a few posts. Representative as she was, she started step one, perhaps thinking if she could do phase 1 if Tagbilaranons would lend her another shot at the Congress so she could complete the whole structure she envisioned.

Too bad, she lost. so all we had were some posts, like phallic symbols.

The next man who came could not truly finish an eyesore he could not swallow.

And so has the third Congressman, and all of us knew them.

Then city mayor Joe Torralba did the unthinkable, released some city government funds to finance the cross beams of the structure. Too bad, he could not finish it yet. He did reap the same criticisms like his mortal political nemesis DNL.

And so the next guy, Dan Lim, who is faced between a "damn if you do and damn if you dont" has to make a go for it.

Now its about to open fully.

Now, its about time criticisms burst.

But did we make a howl when from the ashes, a pile was erected even if we knew no way can a congressman complete a plan more bland that what has become of the Agora?

Or does our leaders have the guts to topple to the ground what the government has spent without completing it to make a greenbelt out of a ruined market? If they do, how'd they account for the money spent that would have been wasted because initially, it seemed like a brilliant thing to our elders?

So here we are faced again with a dilemma.

When we see the opened Agora, some of us wish we could not see that old fashioned carinderia. Others still want to hang on to the memories of sinugbang saging and tubaan. Can we all give in to that?

And the Maranaos? and the pirated or China products?

Well, do we chase them out because they obviously did not pay the right taxes to the right people? What about those classy computer centers that sell computers with the Windows Vista, which is obviously pirated again, ok ra?

So here we are, still not able to decide if we accept of reject the Agora.

Here we are not knowing if cheap China products and nilabog sanga should stay under one roof at the newly finished market.

Good somebody, was it renegade, who, by the name suggests should be the one giving the loudest howl, asked for more time to let people prove that having an Agora like that is much better that having an eyesore nobody cared?

Just kinda askin' a bit.

were losing the paintings fast; sometimes due to neglect, other times due to the effect of the changes in temperature and the climate in general but most of the time, due to lack of heritage information from the priests' curriculum

Most church projects that imply renovations are indeed very bland moves to repaint, reapply sheets over the 1920's paintings by Ray Francia, Canuto Avila and some local artists.

Cortes and several other churches have lost the wing paintings, now these have been painted while as ordered by some genius.

If we keep looking up, well have a chance of finding that strip of heaven now lost.

Now, where do we look up if we need to find that vision of the divine?

It is in this light that i am calling any Boholano environmentalist, not the one that admits hes an extremist (kay kini sila di moaon og baki, tilapi, utan nangka, bago ug kamunngay kay anti-environment kuno) to shed light on this.

Bisan personal opinion that we can present before the barges would start the job they would be told to do.

#533
The governor was quite candid about it.

To solve the diminishing sand along the beachfront of Alona in Tawala, he proposed to borrow a dredger from Marra Construction to do the job.

To him, it is that simple. Tow the barge, dip its suction pumps down there where he said would all be sand because it has been simply washed out from the shorelines.

He said a well-known diver, a gud named Holger is providing him the underwater fotos where the suction pumps would suck sand.

And all to extend the beachline so that the occupant establishment encroaching the 20 meter public access zones can edge a bit and now be outside the banned public areas.

Along Alona stretch? where snorkelers get a satisfying peep at the coral cover near the beaches, they would be tampering with nature? Oh my!

why cant they kick out them assholes sitting on the beachfronts to clear the public access zones according to law?

Because they cant do it, "theyre getting the pier to come to the boat?"

And claiming it is for the environment? How ingenious.

What can you say?

As much as you would like to go around Bohol Oliver, it really wouldnt matter if he is a guy, a gal or a gay.

All we would rather like to impress is, BOhol has so far been fairly successful in warding off other businesses other than the educational heritage and eco-cultural tours.

You you need not spend that much, tours can be had as long as you pay for the car, the accommodations, food and a little professional service fee for the guides.

Tour guides range from P700 per day for a car, 800-1000 for a van with 14 guests, to 2500 for a busload in a countryside tour.

Car goes P2500 to Choco, van at P3K to P3.5K, buses at P8K to P10K depending on the circuit.

Food for a tour is loose change. Make it P300 for lunch, an extra cash for nibbles.

So its not as expensive, isnt it?

and dont you ever get cute with a female guide, you could get into an embarrassing situation.

WOULD IT MATTER MUCH?

There probably is a searing debate i may start if i tell you Dec. 25 or April 29, it really does not matter.

You see, recently, i just felt compelled to believe that Christmas never really means so much to Christians and Catholics.

You see, with or without Christams in December, nothing really changes.

Peole just seem to equate Christmas in December as merrymaking. But is does not turn out that way to all Filipinos, even Boholanos who are far better off.

Like the season pushes us to give some more? Nope, not really.

In fact the season;s revelries cause a many woes unto people's relationships.

Hundreds of innocent people are hurt by firecrackers and explosives. Many wag their tongues in envy at how the rich lavishly pamper themselves with holiday shopping sprees.

And the poor still remain poor, Christmas be in December or July.

I think Christmas be better celebrated not in time wut in a place, not in Bethlehem but in a shrine inside each of us. Everytime.

I think you see what i mean?

Bohol Latest News / Re: Bohol Buys Coaster

ITS GONNA COST CAPITOL A CRAZY BILL for maintaining the ROSA Coaster!

The way the government drivers here are taking the vehicles like its gonna be a STAR TREKY ride, i bet that multi million coaster is not gonna last ten years.

The nissan terrano which used to be the vice governor's service vehicle turned to be the governor;s back up vehicle for his security men. In less than a year after he sat in power, the engine of SCN 621 broke literally. The driver accordingly mixed kerosene with diesel in his fuel to make sure his passeneger body guards keep up with the 1998 Pajero.

Not a few months later, the 1998 Mitsubishi pajero, SEZ 969 has to get a new engine, read and Capitol paid a whooping P2M for that.

Why? because the 1998 engine was totally abused you would wonder how a government driver could be so ignorant about the care of engines like pajeros.

I wonder how the Mitsubishi Rosa would fare when local officials would ask for free rides from Capitol for their field trips now familiarly called JUNKETS.

Of course, they couldnt afford to pay for the fuel, that's why Capiltol is there, isn't it?

please delete Atty Juanito Cambangay from the list. He died early last year.

Unless we'd all want a dead governor, then he may be a perfect candidate.

There unluckilly is your classic example of how people see things happen and yet lift not even a finger. Gone are the times when omission to do somthing right is the "in" thing. This has to stop and while the government apparently is inutile in this aspect, there is still hope.

It is in us, people who would make the difference now.

Shall we remain standing upright with arms akimbo?

This reminds me of one saying:

In addition to the facts about Jagna Port, let it be known here that it was not the Local Government Unit of Jagna which funded the completion or development and rehabilitation of the port. It was the national government through the Philippne Ports Authority, using corporate funds while making sure that the port becomes a key RORO port jump off to Mindanao.

It is also the PPA which operates the port and the town only gets, if it does part of the revenues generated therein. The local govenrment, it being only there because the port happens to be in its jurisdiction could only facilitate the complaints if any are lodged properly, otherwise the LGU would appear as stupid.

The Jagna market truly remains to be a little more that a skeleton of a building.

But, in fairness, there has been a lot that the local officials have done, it just could not be done just as quickly, knowing that the town has limited resources and a full list of priorities, including more serious poverty alleveiation, food production and health issues.

Going ack to the main thread, it would be a better move if the LGU could get hold of the details, not that it has not seen the rpblem but, as Mayor Eksam has said, there are priorities the local officials have to do first.

Messing with things ordinary residents or Filipino Citizens could ably do may not be on top of its priorities for now.

Bohol Directory / DATING THE CORTES CHURCH
January 06, 2009, 10:37:27 AM
DOBLE CARA
CORTES Church, no doubt is a century, if not centuries old structure. I may start a heated debate by saying that. The truth is, I haven’t found somebody who can authoritatively say or tell how old the church is.
Too bad, none of our older generations could actually leave to the living the exact date of the structure.
Over this, let me attempt a wild theory.

There are about two clues as to the dates of the existing structure. One is a date carved on top of the center arch of the outer façade of the church, the other one above the center arch at the baptistry entrance.

The first date, 1896 is displayed prominently at the façade. The other date, 1892 is carved on the head of the arch at the baptistry entrance on the epistle side of the church.
Would the date on the entrance arch correspond to the beginning of the year when the cornerstones of the church were laid out? Or would it simply signify the time when the whole church was “completed”? (Completed is placed in quotation marks because by all indications, Cortes Church is not yet finished!)
Again, the stone member of the arch shows 1896.
But the baptistry, which is obviously a newer structure than the whole fabric of the main church is dated 1892.

Question, would builders build first a baptistery before finishing the body of the church upon which the entrance to the baptistery becomes part?
Going back to the date atop the main arch at the entrance of the first face of the church, it indeed is a later addition, and when this porch or portico façade was completed, the date was carved. 1896.
Proof?
The “lobby” of the puerta mayor feature false arches flanking the massive double doors.

The false arches also feature carved details of what is unmistakably baroque designs following the arch. Two square columns with designs carved in stone also flank the double doors.
The porch is a wide space with adobe tiles, some traces of the Moroccan blue (muslim tiles) can be seen. The space does not have a ceiling. This may be another proof that the church is not really completed.
And then as you take a look at the entirety of the puerta mayor, you will be asking the same question. This is already a complete face of the church, why was this not exposed?
If that were the real face of the church, the building would be aligned to the campanario, and that would make sense.

In other words, why would the builders make the false arches beside the main door when, in the end, it would be ultimately covered by the porch?
The answer lies in my personal belief that the two false arches flanking the main door may indeed be the true face of the church. And the campanario, at one time was in line with the main structure. And the date? Well, this may be before the Augustinian Recollects that is, before 1768.
How did I know that? This.

The inscription JHS with a cross and a crown is a basic Jesuit symbol. Would the Augustinian Recollects who came later allow the Jesuit inscription to be placed on top of the puerta mayor? No way, they’d rather put theirs on it.
To prove my point, go outside and take a look at the stone formation that may be the old fabric of the older structure.

The above picture is taken from the epistle side. (ANDAS) Notice the black moss sticking to the old coral stones? The moss is indeed interestingly taking a line, right?
Now, look at the gospel side where the campanario is located.
At the side of the campanario, or at the side of the “Andas”, there you will notice that telltale sign of the portico façade as a later addition of the church!

Now, you will ask, why DOBLE CARA?
That is because the “centuries old” church bearing 1896 is just a date carved out after whoever thought of adding that portico façade. The date may coincide with the completion of that addition to that old church!
Why the addition, you would ask?
Because granting that even if our church was built during the early time of the Augustinian Recollects, and that should be after 1768, the people who built it may have copied the design from its mother parish, not Maribojoc, but Baclayon or Loboc.

And why would Baclayon and Loboc churches display two faces or doble caras?

Remember, Baclayon was built by the Jesuits, and so was Loboc.
Building the old Baclayon Church was started in 1596, a year after the first Jesuit missionaries Fray Juan de Torres and Gabriel Sanchez came.
When the Jesuits started to build, they want to be always reminded of home, in their case, modern Europe. To keep that, they attempted to make a European building by copying the arts there and bring these images nearby. The art and the architecture: baroque.
Baroque art is characterized by the profuse use of flowery designs which represent movements. Take a look at the altar inside the church. That is baroque, in my calculations, mid to late 17th century!

In Baclayon, while the Jesuit planners were building the church, piratical raids keep them from focusing on the construction. The same raids later forced the Jesuit builders of Baclayon to seek for another place where they would not be caught unaware. The Baclayon project was ultimately abandoned.
By 1602, the Jesuits formally resettled in Loboc, away from the raiders who devastated coastal settlements.
In Loboc, the Jesuits started another Church, which later got burned. From the fabric of that burnt building, they built the convent, while relocating the new church to its new location where it is now.
Like Baclayon, the new church, with double towers, feature two similar false arches flanking the puerta mayor.

When peace reigned in Bohol by the early 17th century, the Jesuits went back to administer the settlement in Baclayon and completed the unfinished church and the watchtower in 1725 or 1727.
The art and architecture of these two 16th century churches are unmistakably baroque.
But, politics rocked the universal church. Jesuit popularity was resented by competing Augustinian Recollects. At one time, the Recollects succeeded to convince the pope to expel the Jesuits from all their missions all over the world in the 1760’s.
By 1768, the Augustinian Recollects have reclaimed the Jesuit missions and replaced the frayles in missionaries the mission areas.
But when they came, they were disappointed, even frantic. The Jesuits left their marks in the baroque architecture.

To hide these images, especially in the façade of the old churches, the Recollects did the unthinkable. They added portico facades to hide the Jesuit baroque art in the face of these structures.
The addition, to be an extension of the churches would be covered with roof, effectively making the haunting image of the Jesuit church be lost under a roofed portico facade.
The Augustinian Recollects then built massive tres arcos and two side arcos with equally massive posts like what we also see in Baclayon, Loboc and yes, Cortes.

Thus the churches of the old Jesuit regime bears double faces or DOBLE CARAS: an inner face which is truly Jesuit and an outer face that is also unmistakably Augustinian Recollect.
Now why would Cortes Church, a church later established, by Augustinians be exhibiting that doble cara?
And why would the Augustinian missionaries doing the visita from Maribojoc not insist on a single façade like “mother parish” Maribojoc?

The answer may be because the Recollects may have found the people insisting that they copy their mother church, not Maribojoc, but Baclayon and Loboc.
In fact, because perhaps the residents of Malabago could never forget the influence left by the Jesuits, they insisted that the church art be baroque!

In short, the Augustinian Recollect missionaries could not that easily dictate the residents to build a structure like what they have in their Recollect plans.

And because the residents of Malabago de Paminguitan were descendants of tough men who fought it out and hard against Spanish soldiers in quelling the Tamblot in Tupas, they know too well not to insist.
So, that is what these people are. Renegados.
In fact, the missionaries could not even force the people to get that fancy “SPANISH SOUNDING NAMES”
Think of the Concons, Hubacs, Ocons, Tambis, Nguhos, Pilongos, Agtas, Balates, Pahacs, Boctotos and the funny native sounding names as the first and real renegados.
It is just that the Spaniards could not call them such in the face.
Because if they had done so, you could just imagine the consequences.

The war between the DYRD / Chronicle and City Mayor Dan Lim has more than meets the eye.

For one, it's a chicken and egg thing. I may have began when the Chronilce taunted the city mayor to do something about the drainage system that has not been that functioning as planned. On the other hand, the city mayor has been telling city residents that in no way can the Chronicle biased media bully him into opening the plugged outfall sans any nod from the proper authorities.

It was just that every rainy day, Chronicle would send all hands to the flooded homes along CPG, intentionally report on the nasty condition, and i bet, including items a reporter should not mention for courtesy of those taking their breakfasts. But the Chronicle can do that.

After DENR Sec. Lito Atienza issued a statement about the city residents not to be allowed to suffer from mistakes committed by whosoever, Dan Lim has to accede and unplug the outfall.

Now since the Chronicle has unilaterally declared war, it has to make the mayor unpopular.

So the day the drainage was opened, Chronicle reporters literally run to the water egress along Graham Street, called Atty. Dela Serna and instigated the old man to open his mouth and  let the city residents another spillage of the classic topnotch rhetorics.

But it was not as grim as what Chronicle reported.

And then just as magically, the media, now associated with the Chronicle literally pulled every trick they had to drown Lim with ant blame they can conceive for dirtying the city seas.

And the blame magically focused on Lim, not on to rhe DENR Sec which the local DENR also appeared to hmmm, ...very convenient indeed.

So the war rages and the residents who were saved from countless nigfhts of sleeping in  water beds now have to put up the signs along DBP.

Not one of these were reported.

Now, which side is right, i would rather say, in a war like this, it is not to determine which is right, it would soon be telling us, who would be left.
