Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Ellis Cheever in a scene from 'Contagion.'

Be careful with that trash talk.

Contagion star Laurence Fishburne was all kinds of tough talking about how making a movie about a viral pandemic had very little affect on his psyche -- even while members of the cast and crew became certain levels of germaphobes.

"I ain't afraid of germs," Fishburne said at the recent Contagion press conference. "And I ain't afraid of getting sick. Dying, that's the mothership."

The comment got a big laugh. But the next day Fishburne came down with what his press rep confirms was a stomach flu. That concept clearly tickled director Steven Soderbergh.

"Laurence is sick today, did you hear that?" Soderbergh told USA Today. "After saying that he's not afraid of germs. Germs hurt."

"It's all very Greek," co-star Matt Damon added.

Unlike viral flu victims of the movie, Fishburne has fully recovered. Contagion opens in theaters today. -- http://content.usatoday.com/

Sept. 6 2011: A seemingly intoxicated moose is discovered entangled in an apple tree by a stunned Swede in Goteborg, Sweden late Tuesday.

STOCKHOLM â€"  A seemingly intoxicated moose has been discovered entangled in an apple tree by a stunned Swede.

Per Johansson says he heard a roar from his vacationing neighbor's garden in southwestern Sweden late Tuesday and went to have a look. There, he found a female moose kicking about in the tree. The animal was likely drunk from eating fermented apples.

With the help of police and rescue services, the 45-year-old Johansson later managed to set the moose free in part by sawing off tree branches.

But the animal appeared confused and wandered into Johansson's garden, where she was still resting Thursday.

Other neighbors in the Goteborg suburb Saro had seen the animal sneaking around the area for days. Johansson said the moose appeared to be sick, drunk or "half-stupid." -- http://www.foxnews.com/

In the articles in Science, Dr. Berger’s team describes novel combinations of apelike and humanlike features in the hand, foot and pelvis of the new species. The hand, for instance, is apelike because it has long, strong fingers suitable for climbing trees, yet is also humanlike in having a long thumb that in combination with the fingers could have held tools in a precision grip. A cast of the inside of the skull shows an apelike brain, but one that had taken the first step toward being reorganized on human lines.

This mixture of apelike and humanlike features suggests that the new species was transitional between the australopithecines and humans, the researchers said at a news conference on Wednesday. Given its age, Australopithecus sediba is just old enough to be the ancestor of Homo erectus, the first species that paleoanthropologists agree belonged to the human ancestry and which existed 1.9 million years ago.

More at: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/09/science/09fossils.html
#49634
The principal significance of the new fossils is not that Australopithecus sediba is necessarily the direct ancestor of the human genus, other scientists said, but rather that the fossils emphasize the richness of evolutionary experimentation within the australopithecine group.

“This is really exciting new material,” said Ian Tattersall, a paleoanthropologist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. “I think it holds the possibility of flinging wide open the question of what Homo is.”

Besides two skulls reported last year, researchers led by Dr. Berger have since retrieved an almost complete right hand, a foot and a pelvis. The bones are especially well preserved because their owners apparently fell into a deep cave and a few weeks later were swept into a sediment that quickly fossilized their bones. The rocks above the cave have gradually eroded away, bringing the fossils to the surface, where one was found by Dr. Berger’s 9-year-old son, Matthew, in 2008, while chasing his dog.

That fall into the cave happened 1.977 million years ago, according to dating based on the rate of decay of uranium in the rock layer that holds the fossils.

#49636
Dr. Berger’s claim, if accepted, would radically redraw the present version of the human family tree, placing the new fossils in the center. The new species, in his view, should dislodge Homo habilis, the famous tool-making fossil found by Louis and Mary Leakey, as the most likely bridge between the australopithecenes and the human lineage. Australopithecenes were apelike creatures that walked upright, like people, but had still not forsaken the trees.

Dr. Berger and his colleagues present this claim in five articles in the current issue of Science that describe various aspects of the new fossils. As is common in the field of paleoanthropology, the discoverer of a new fossil is seeking to place it as close as possible to the direct line of human descent, while others are resisting that interpretation.

In this particular case, there are many uncertainties regarding the fossil record from that time, including when the human lineage first emerged and how Homo habilis fits in the picture.

An apelike creature with human features, whose fossil bones were discovered recently in a South African cave, is being greeted by paleoanthropologists as a likely watershed in the understanding of human evolution.

The discoverer of the fossils, Lee Berger of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, says the new species, known as Australopithecus sediba, is the most plausible known ancestor of archaic and modern humans. Several other paleoanthropologists, while disagreeing with that interpretation, say the fossils are of great importance anyway, because they elucidate the mix-and-match process by which human evolution was shaped.

Mexico goes gaga

In Mexico, Pacquiao received a rousing welcome as a huge and wild crowd came out to see him promote his trilogy with Marquez.

Less than a week after Pacquiao and Marquez kicked off the roadshow by appearing together in Manila, where the crowd estimate in front of the Quirino Grandstand varied from 50,000 to as high as 100,000, it was this city’s turn to make an impression on Pacquiao and his camp.

Although the number did not match or even come close to the one that gathered in the Philippines, the response was tremendous as the people treated him as if he was either Paul McCartney or John Lennon and was tagging Ringo Star and George Harrison along. The parade started at the Zocalo area where a double-deck tourist bus carried both Pacquiao and Marquez for the short ride to the Plaza a la Revolucion, where the remains of Mexico’s revolutionary leaders are buried.

But even before the bus could move, Mexicans surrounded the bus, many of them hurling into the second level hats, jackets, shirts, gloves, towels, blankets, and just about anything Pacquiao can put his autograph on.

“Grabe ang response ng mga tao dito (The public response here was tremendous),” said Pacquiao later as he was having lunch at the St. Regis Hotel.

Pacquiao recalled an incident at the Plaza a la Revolucion during noon when even burly bodyguards had trouble escorting him to a guarded tent.

The crowd was so thick that the men hired to protect them looked a bit helpless in guiding Pacquiao and his team from being roughed up.

Earlier in the day, Pacquiao dropped by the Mexican Congress and what had originally been thought to be a short visit lasted more than an hour as the lawmakers jostled for position to take their pictures taken with boxing’s No. 1 attraction.

“Nagkagulo sila (Then went gaga),” said Pacquiao, sounding and looking amazed with the reception given to him.

To avoid being caught up in traffic on his way to a private airport in Toluca, Pacquiao and his party were flown in by a helicopter in time for the flight to Los Angeles. Pacquiao arrives in Manila early Saturday morning.

The stop here of the media tour came after Manila hosted the first leg and New York and Los Angeles took their turns last Tuesday and Wednesday.

And now that the tour is over, Pacquiao will head for a training camp in Baguio City on Sept. 19.

“The party’s over,” said Roach. (With a report from Genalyn D. Kabiling) -- http://www.mb.com.ph/

Pacquiao eyes 2016 VP race
By RIO ROSE RIBAYA and NICK GIONGCO
September 9, 2011, 6:32pm

MANILA, Philippines â€" Rep. Manny Pacquiao will hang his gloves in 2016 to run for vice president.

He disclosed this in a radio interview while in Mexico to promote his November 12, 2011 fight with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez “Come 2016, I am to run for vice president. No more boxing at that time,” the 32-year-old boxer-politician said.

In the same radio interview, Pacquiao disclosed his plan to run for Sarangani governor in 2013. Sarangani Gov. Miguel Dominguez is already on his third and last term.

But Pacquiao will have eligibility problems if he pursues his vice presidential bid in 2016.

The 1987 Constitution requires candidates for president and vice president to be at least 40 years old on the day of the election. By that time, however, Pacquiao will only be 37 years old.

Reacting to Pacquiao’s political plans, Secretary Ramon Carandang the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office said Pacquiao, considered the world’s best boxer, is free to run for higher office in the upcoming national elections.

“It is a testament to our democracy that Manny Pacquiao who grew up poor and worked hard to succeed can aspire to the second highest office,” Carandang said.

Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Ronald Llamas also said Pacquiao’s reported plans to run for vice president have not yet been discussed by the administration.

“He has a right to run for public office although this has not been discussed in the Palace,” Llamas said.

September 09, 2011, 04:47:03 PM

This old Inca city sits on a peak in the Andes. It was only inhabited for a short period of time, likely 1450-1572 AD, before being abandoned as a result of the Spanish conquest of South America. Since Spaniards never found the city, and locals did not reveal its location, Machu Picchu only came to the attention of the West in the early 20th century. Debate still exists as to whether Machu Picchu was a regular settlement, a Royal retreat, or a religious sanctuary. To reach the site itself is now incredibly easy, with regular buses and trains. This has led to worries about the sustainability of large numbers of visitors there. However, given the wonderful views and the ruins themselves it is easy to see why people flock to Machu Picchu. -- http://listverse.com/

History / Pompeii and Herculaneum
September 09, 2011, 04:36:01 PM

“There were some so afraid of death that they prayed to die.” So write Pliny the Younger of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. His uncle, the great elder Pliny, had taken the Roman fleet across the bay of Naples to rescue those people trapped at the foot of the volcano. The expedition would cost the elder Pliny his life as the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum were smothered in ash. The ash, which destroyed so many lives, perfectly preserved the two towns for 1700 years. While we often think of the ancient Romans as inhabiting a flawless world of white marble Pompeii reveals a real town with many features we would recognize today. Political slogans are daubed on walls; “Vote for Lucius Popidius Sabinus!” There is also fruitier graffiti on toilet walls. A mural shows a riot that occurred around the cities amphitheater. The city has been a gold mine for archeologists and is a major tourist site. Unlike the other cities here you can still see some of the inhabitants. Dotted throughout the ruins are the ghostly, and in many cases ghastly, plaster casts of the dead whose bodies left hollows in the ash. -- http://listverse.com/

It is very true that persecution is the cost of being a Christian, because the believer must reckon upon hardships and troubles much more than other men. At first glance persecution looks to be a truly horrible experience. But even though persecution usually isn't pleasant, it does have a great many rewarding advantages, for when persecution comes into our lives then we must conclude the following:

That we have put our complete faith and trust in Jesus Christ.
That we can truly call ourselves Christians.
That we belong to the kingdom of God.
That we are righteous.
That we have been chosen by the Father and the Son.
That ours is the kingdom of God now and in the future.
That Jesus is truly our Lord and that is why we are being persecuted.
That our salvation is sure and certain.
That we are not false prophets.
That we are not worldly for the people of the world are not persecuted.
That we are in the very good company with many other saved Christians.
That we can know that we are truly born again.
That eternal life is ours. -- http://robertwells.tripod.com/

If you are not being persecuted, you should ask, "Why?" And the answer just may be that you are not living a Godly life. It is our Godly life that causes the other person to get heated up, upset, and unhappy. The truth is, everyone who lives a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. If no one is persecuting you, it is because you are not living the Christian life and shining as lights in the world.

In Luke 6:26 Jesus said, "Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets."

When the world applauds, appreciates, and commends you instead of persecuting you, you can pretty well figure that you are no longer a true prophet of the Lord. When the world chuckles right along with you and pats you on your back, you can pretty well deduce that you are, in fact, a false prophet who always speaks smooth things created from your own subjectivity without hearing from the Spirit of the living God. Sadly, if you have no persecution in your life then that is probably just another way of saying that you have been absorbed into the world.

Of course this is all foolishness to the non-believing unrepentant sinner, but still the unbelieving sinner feels guilty and doesn't like that feeling, so it is rather easy for him to lash out at the believers of God, blaming them for making him feel bad. That is why the things of God and the beliefs of God are constantly being ridiculed and made fun of. The unbelievers are constantly attempting to destroy anything that has to do with God in a desperate attempt to do away with the source of their feeling bad. Throughout human history blaming someone else for their troubles has always been a very easy way out for a great many groups. So the sinner is an enemy of God and he is trying to fight back against God. And since the sinner can't get at God, he does the next best thing - he goes after those that follow God. Jesus told us in John 3:20 that, "Everyone who does evil hates the light," and in John 7:7 he declared, "The world hates me because I testify that what it does is evil." This can all be summed up by another verse in the Book of John. John 15:20 "If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you."

The world hates Jesus because he is light, righteousness, and truth. They hate him because he reveals the wickedness of the people of the world, and they hate him because he exposes their evil. Jesus also told his disciples that they were his servants, and he told them just as he is telling us, that if the master is hated, then the servants of the master will also be hated. It's like someone who hates someone of a different race. Usually that person will also hate all others in that entire race. Or if a man hates his neighbor, he will usually also hate the man's wife and children. In fact it is sad to say but he will many times even hate those who come and visit that neighbor.

Persecution in the United States at this time, frequently comes verbally, via the tongue, usually in the form of cruel mockings and reproachful language, or by deeds such as confiscation of goods, banishment from a group, or even in the workplace where one may be fired, demoted, or spoken against because of one's Christian faith. In today's society to tell others that you are a born again Christian who has put his entire faith and trust in Jesus Christ, is to bring on smirks and laughs, rude and disgusting comments, and alienation and retaliation.

If you doubt this then tell a group of your friends what the Word of God says about the homosexual lifestyle, and that God says that it is horribly wrong, and then tell them what the Bible says is going to happen to those who engage in it. Or tell a few of your fellow workers what the Bible says about murdering unborn children and that God considers it nothing less than an abomination. Then observe the response from these friends and fellow workers. I think you will see most of the time the seeds of verbal persecution beginning to form.

But why is their such persecution in the world, and why is God so offensive to so many? Because the Word of God is a stumbling block to ungodly people. The unbelievers that don't know Jesus enjoy sinning, in fact they revel in it. They enjoy partaking in as many sins as possible. Sinning is what gives them pleasure. To sin is to enjoy life. The reason why ungodly men persecute Godly men, is because of the spirit that the creator has placed within each one of us. When the unbeliever sins, the Holy Spirit is convicting the spirit of that sinner and this causes the sinner to know that he is doing wrong and that his actions are against the laws of God.

The Eighth Beatitude: Blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

In this beatitude Christ pronounces a blessing on those who are being persecuted. But the persecution that they are suffering is not for misdeeds or evil acts, their persecution is for doing righteousness.

No, not for any crimes they have done, and not for being unrighteous and committing the acts of those who practice evil such as murderers, thieves, and all other acts of wickedness, but on account of their righteous and Godly conversation and Godly actions which in turn brings upon them the hatred and enmity of the men of the world. For by living righteously the believers separate themselves from the world and profess themselves not to belong to the world. The Godly life of true believers places a brand upon them that distinguishes them from the rest of the world.

There is much evidence that proves that more Christians around the world have been martyred for their faith in this century alone, than in the combined previous nineteen centuries of the church's history. In many countries today it is a crime to be a Christian. If you live in the United States, you may think that the idea of persecution of Christians is not very relevant today. We are not experiencing any real persecution here in this country. But as you look around in this country, you can't help but see many great evil inroads that have been made into destroying anything having to do with Jesus Christ, the Bible, or the laws of God. The greatest assault against Christianity have been the many laws that have been passed recently, all with the idea of suppressing Christianity in all areas of society.

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) â€" Louisiana police dealing with the discovery of a decapitated child have gotten mandatory trauma counseling on their chief's orders.

Chief Scott Silverii called in counselors for all staff who dealt with the death last month of 7-year-old Jori Lirette in the city of Thibodaux (TIB'-uh-doh). The disabled boy was found dismembered at home and his head was by the side of the road. His father, Jeremiah Wright, is charged with first-degree murder.

Silverii told The Daily Comet (http://bit.ly/nKLdvY) that a counseling session was held the day after Jori's funeral. Any employee who had anything to do with the case, from dispatchers to detectives, was required to attend.

The chief said police have a professional attitude for dealing with crimes but that "no matter how well you're trained, you're still human."  -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Love Talk / Dutch woman calls ex-boyfriend 65,000 times
September 09, 2011, 10:10:05 AM
AP â€" 14 hrs ago

AMSTERDAM (AP) â€" Dutch prosecutors are charging a 42-year-old woman with stalking after she allegedly called her ex-boyfriend 65,000 times in the past year.

The 62-year-old victim from The Hague filed a police complaint in August due to the persistent phone calls. Police arrested the suspected stalker Monday, seizing several cell phones and computers from her home in Rotterdam.

Hague prosecution spokeswoman Nicolette Stoel said Thursday the woman argued to judges at a preliminary hearing she had a relationship with the man and the number of calls she placed to him wasn't excessive. The man denied they had a relationship.

The court ordered her not to contact him again. -- http://news.yahoo.com/
