At first I thought it was 'Trebuchet' as in the medieval ranged artillery piece (long ranged catapult).

Welcome to Tubag Bohol Trennoche! And I hope you continue to 'swing' yourself to our shores :D

It was my dad who taught me mathematics and science problems. It was my mom who was there to comfort us after Dad 'disciplined' us.

I could still remember being a child playing with the Lego set and bulldozer/construction toys my father bought me, and he would explain to me what each construction vehicle did, its purpose. He would always quiz me on what each toy did, everytime I got it right, i recieved a piso coin. :)

Ah the memories.

Thank You, Paul. I really appreciate you sharing this with us man.

Yes, it's just a small collection.  About the last two pictures, they're the two sides of the same coin.  I don't even know if it's currency or just a stamped coin.  The only thing I can make of the inscription on the obverse side are "FERDIN", "VII", and a "G".

Paul, would you be able to bring this during the EB? Id like to see it first hand, its  awesome that you have this in your collection.

It would make sense that it says Ferdinand VII, he was on the throne during the mid to late 19th century, and he was one of the few modernist monarchs in Spain in terms of 'liberalizing' the Philippines. It was through his royal edicts in the Royal Spanish Cortes that allowed the opening up of Philippine ports to foreign trade. He was also the proponent that fascilitated the growth of the Filipino intelligentsia, revoking old laws that prevented Filipinos (of mestizo or native ancestry) from studying in Spain.

Great collection, Paul.

So she wants to 'celebrate' probably bowling or hitting the bars afterwards (or both, LOL). I dunno if Lee is coming, ill check tho. Bring other peeps if you want man, more the merrier.

This tactic seems to work for me, well most of the time that is.

Whenever they're angry at you and shouting, just stay quiet. And what I also do is just nodd and agree with them, and they usually think im trying to be 'smart' with them, hahahahaha. Its so cute to see a girl get all riled up. Ah, the thrill of being chased, its so exhilarating.

Oh man oh man oh man. I actually had something like this happen back on a date. I mean don't get me wrong, the girl i was dating was drop dead gorgeous, but like when we sat on the couch and started to get sensual, she started talking (after we came back from the restaurant) but i immediately smelled garlic breath from her mouth. Hahaha i had to get up and ask if she wanted dessert, i ended up getting her ice cream, that kinda killed the odor, but yea.

I have prior to living here in Bohol visited Philippines several times since 1997.

I am an Icon in Bohol. Many know me and many are good to me.
As i am with them. I am direct to the point type of gal. he he he! :D

Lorenzo some times I have withdrawals of missing my family back home but I am way to protective of the two girls I am preparing to adopt. I will not leave them behind when I leave here they will go with me.
That has always been my promise and loyalty that I have given them.

I became interested in media here to learn about the place and be able to express myself in my own way and heart the true story of why things and why things happen.
I have always noticed most media person before I was involved in media here they were missing truths and not making thing clear and being biased.

Now that I am here I will contradict their stories and call it the way it really happend.

I do not dig media member who are paid to paint a falsehood about things.

I could go on my friend but the story is way too long.

I think if we met in person we would propbaby laugh allot with one another. I have a great sense of humor even though it sounds like I  am whiner but I am not.

The situations themselves are whiny? he he he!

P.S. by the way I like the picture your using now! Gawpo!!! ;D

6 years is a long time, Priscilla. Im glad that most of Bohol welcomed you tho, one thing is clear you are a very adaptable and bold woman. We all have our own edgy times, and I admit that I may have been mean to you in the past, I learned alot from you and really appreciate all that you are doing for Zach's fiance and child. So I ask you to forgive me for past clashes with you in this site. Let bygones be bygones.

Glad to know that you're liking it over there in Bohol. Perhaps we can sit down and have a cup of coffee this summer, eh?

Cheers, bud.

This coming summer is my vacation and part of my plan is visiting my in-laws place in Esperanza Agusan Del Sur. It is the home of the last virgin forest in the Phils. and also the nesting place of the Philippine Eagle or Monkey Eating Eagle. I saw one that stands 5 ft. from head to toe. It really could carry a 4 year old child at flight. I mean not an obese one.

I will take some pics this time.

I read that the Philippine Eagle is known as the "Monkey Eating" Eagle. Apparently, one of its favorite dishes are indigenous moneys, tarsiers, deer, fish, and pythons.

Truly a powerful and majestic bird.

Inspiration & Hope / Reply: The trap of anger .
January 29, 2008, 07:17:32 AM
Quote from: Barbaro on January 24, 2008, 12:51:43 AM
Your anger hurts you much more than it affects anyone else. When your energy and awareness are tightly wrapped around anger, you're not much good for anything else.
There are many things beyond your control that can be perfectly legitimate reasons for anger. Yet the amount of time you maintain that anger is completely up to you.

The more quickly you move on, the better off you'll be. When you feel the first sensation of anger, let that be a reminder to let it go.

Anger can be useful in calling your attention to matters that require your response. But anger itself is not an effective response.

Take a slow, deep breath and remind yourself of how much more effective you can be by maintaining a positive, results-oriented approach. Decide, in a cool, calm and thoughtful manner, exactly what response would be the most powerful and valuable, and then make it happen.

Don't let the foolish, thoughtless, destructive actions of others catch you in a trap of anger. Take note of the anger, let it go, put your focus on being your best, and you'll surely emerge as a winner.

When I'm angry at something, someone, I usually go to church. I release my tension in a form of prayer, and asking for forgiveness for my human frailties in drudgery, and unnecessary anger. It does help, for me that is, to just talk to God and have a one on one conversation with him by yourself. You can feel a sense of 'listening', I always feel elated or lighter after going to church-visit. It is my own personal therapy. And I do agree with what the posters in here state, that anger is not something one should keep inside their heart, because it builds up over time.

In order to have a firm grip in the concepts within the broad field of Molecular biology, one has to understand that this study encompasses the attention on those aspects of genetic material and how it is perpetuated and expressed in the forms of RNA and protein. The general topics that will be covered, therefore, are replication, transcription, and RNA processing.

The solid foundation of molecular biology lies in the simple yet complex nature of the DNA structure, which are composed of multiple functional groups and properties, namely:
1) Methyl
2) Hydroxyl
3) Carbonyl
4) Amines
5) Amides
6) Phosphates

Methyls are rather simplistic, its non-polar and it is hydrophobic, it likes water because H20 itself is a polar molecule; and the hydrophobicity of H20 allows the synthesis of hydrogen bonding: so long as there are instances of
a) electronegative atom
b) hydrogen covalently bonded to an electron atom.

Carbonyl's are necessary due to their Carbon to Oxygen double bond, it is polar non-charged but whole group is polar-charged; ionic and Hydrogen bonding interactions are delineated within.

For amines, just know that there are conjugated bases, as well as conjugated acid forms or as what I tell my students (generally known as basic groups).
Amines on the other hand is rather interesting because it is seen in almost every protein structure, both oxygens and nitrogens within in are electronegative, there is a big electron cloud around the whole molecule (or other wise known in biochemical and thermodynamics as "partial" double bound character). Due to the Carbon-Nitrogen partial bond, there is no rotation around this structure, and proteins within our bodies are able to develop a structure due to the C-N bond in the amides.

Phosphates are another key structural component of DNA; it is what makes DNA acidic, it is always attached to a nucleotide, and most phosphates are usually attached to things. One thing that I love to reiterate is the 'Divinity' of phosphates, from it comes all forms of energy: Phosphates are groups where bonding between the phosphate are easily broken AND it is the breaking of these phosphate-phosphate bonds that releases energy -> which in turn allows the making of reactions.
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) are sources of energy that is necessary for every biotic movement is actually a source of energy that is created by phosphates. Without phosphates, proteins will never bond to a DNA sequence of structures, there will be no ribosome organelle that produces the proteins to allow the induction of RNA primers to allow the translation and transcription of the helical bend. That is why we refer to the term "Divinity" of phosphate. Without it, everything in the said organism would be in stasis. Death as a biological and absolute law would manifest in the said organism, species, population, etc.

The Building Blocks: Nucleotides

There are two different types of nitrogenous bases that composes and make up the nucleotides, namely purines and pyrimidine. There are basic structural conformity that differentiates the two, purines are larger 2 ring structures, whereas pyrimidines are a singular aromatic ring.

The 3 major pyrimidines: Cytosine, Thymine => DNA
                                  Cytosine, Uracil => RNA

The 2 major purines: Adenine, Guanine

There are also sugar groups that differs from one another; namely in their grouping
DNA -> Deoxyribose (sugar type)
RNA -> Ribose (sugar type)

Also it is necessary to understand that nucleotides are nucleosides + a phosphates (phosphate + sugar + base)
What is a nucleoside? It is a nucleotide that is missing a phosphate group
The bond between the nitrogenous base and water is called: N-glycosidic bond

When referring to nucleotide know that sugars are labeled in 5' (five prime) to 3' (three prime)

What determines directionality of these compounds?
5'-> 3', it is the sugars
Sugars are joined to each other via a phosphodiester bond, and thus DNA has regions composed of the major grooves and minor grooves. The major grooves are larger spaces observed in the anti-parallel double helix with no sugar or phosphate backbone face it; minor grooves have sugars attached to it.

The following are uploaded images from the text book to better illustrate the said concepts

The helical anti-parallel structure of DNA, you can notice the large spaces are the major grooves, the smaller spaces are the minor grooves (which has sugars attached to it)

Proliferation of genetic sequence from a phage parasite onto a host cell; replication explained in here.

The major nucleotidic structures. The top structures, as you can see are 2 aromatic rings, which are part of the purine groups, the lower structures are singular aromatic rings, part of the pyrimidine group. These base groups are what composes the complex sequential nature of our genetic codets. "The fingerprints of GOD," as what I like to say. :)

Two sugars. One is the Deoxyribose, the sugar found within eukaryotic species (higher leveled organisms in the echelon of the continuum of life; ex animals, tertiary botanic species)
The other sugar is Ribose, the sugar found within most prokaryotes or 'lesser' organisms, bacteria, virus, fungi etc

The phosphodiester bonds, the phosphitic bonds within nucleosides. These provide the basis for DNA structure, or energy sequestration, the breakage of these Phosphate bonds literally gives off 'ATP energy' that is essential for life itself. As i said earlier, 'divinity of phosphates'

A clearer picture of the phosphodiester bonds

Broader picture, you can actually see in the upper left hand image of the sugars, the phosphates, the nucleotides in full combination, all are complementary. The lower image shows the 'minor' groove, and the 'major' groove. Note that the minor groove has sugars attached to its side, while none are found in the major groove.

Next lesson will be on Protein Structure

Here, the resources are still abundant, unspoiled and unexploited. Blue crabs or lambay can be found at knee high waters. People here found the supermarket as more convenient than catching crabs or fish. Therefore, wildlife thrives a lot here. The sea are rich with different fishes like Alaska. You can only find Filipinos fishing and no other else. They fish only for recreation or relaxation and not for food.

Let me tell you a short story of my life.

One time when I was about 25 years old, my first company went bankrupt. I survived through fishing with mentorship of Rey Ompad, the causin of Blue Angel. He thaught me how to catch crabs with bare hands. Also how to catch Cuttle fish (Kubutan) which is hard to find because it is well comoflaged and we used to catch it at night. I met a fishing mate who is Rocky Gatal, the causin of Mikey Gatal.

After months of working in part-time jobs and fishing, Rocky Gatal introduced me to a Boholano who was a big time manager of Saudi American Bank. His name is Jun Ayag, a very strict, straight to the point, kind of manager, but he helps people who wants to develop skills. Outside the office, he is down to earth and prefers simple friends. I worked in Saudi American Bank for less than a year. Our team with Jun's leadership was awarded as the best to handle a crisis, when a virus hit and paralyzed the central computer. We were well organized that without aid of computers, business resumed as normal even it was very high season (December).

Since my sponsorship can not be transfered to Jun's company, I moved on to a marketing/trading and distribution company, where I became a Marketing Analyst and now handling Purchasing/export department.

With my 18 years hands on experience in the trading business, I bet any MBA graduate could be better.

Whew! That was real survival in a foreign land.

Since I am a kind of person who is not comfortable with uniformity, I wish to pursue with my engineering career. I am planning to take a board exams in Civil Engineering here in the Kingdom hopefully by next year.

Move on.

Very inspiring personal anecdote, Mr. Ferniz.
Good luck on your Civil Engineering Boards. And may you continue to be a shining influence to your children as well as many members in here.

Humbly Yours,
Bran Lorenzo

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my words to them.
                        Whom shall I send?

                              Chorus
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will send the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
                        My hand will save.

                              Chorus
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

                        Finest bread I will provide,
                        'Til their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
                        Whom shall I send?

                              Chorus
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

Its very simple, the Philippines is a vast country, a nation of over 7,100 islands, and only 30% of the islands are actually over the size of 1 square mile, most of the islands in the Philippine Archipelago are so numerous that many don't even have names.

Negros, is actually very well known, there is a large Negrosianos group in New York city, in Queens region, a considerable amount in central new jersey (several thousands) and numerous in California as well. If you're looking for quiet area and nice beaches, then the island of Siqijor or parts of southern Leyte would suit you.

The British royal family changed their surname (last name) from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor in 1917.

George V was king of England from 1910 to 1936. Son of Edward VII, King of England, and Princess Alexandra of Denmark, he married Queen Mary of Teck (called May) in 1893. Known as the Sailor Prince, he had an active naval career and rose to the rank of vice admiral in 1903.

World War One broke out in 1914 and was in full fury in 1917. In protest, King George V renounced all the German titles belonging to him and his family and adopted the name of his castle, Windsor.

Ravens are kept in the Tower of London because, according to myth, the British throne will come to a fall if the ravens leave the tower. The wings of the ravens are clipped to prevent them from flying away.

He may be considered a 'military dictator', but through his swift and absolute will, he was able to contain and silence the secessionist groups that would have had Indonesia disintegrated into weakened states that could be easily controlled by the west. One nation that wanted the destruction of the Indonesian Union was Australia and the British government, which tried hard during the Konfrontasi epoch.

The west 'Fears' a large and unified South East Asia, particularly one that is hostile to the west and could threaten shipping lanes in the Straits of Malacca. Hence, Australia, the British and the Americans supplied and supported rebel groups in current Sumatra, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya in attempts to weaken Indonesia.

50 years later, with a surging economy and a national population of 240+ million and growing, Indonesia is the 4th most populous nation in the world, and the largest in Asia, behind China and India.

Suharto provided the bureaucratic foundation for the Republican system that Indonesia would later evolve, and it was Suharto with his 'moderate' policies that allowed the secularism in Indonesia to manifest itself. Islam, Christianity (Catholicism in particular), as well as native religions could live cooperatively. He solidified the nation, even those who were fervently against Suharto's military policies, retained the foundation that he provided.

He  molded the governmental system in place within the Wide Arms of Jakarta. He nationalized the concept of Indonesia Raya Pancasila, which translates as "The Greater Indonesian Brotherhood". It built on the concept of "through our variances and differences, we are one." That is his legacy to the region. Afterall, a stable Indonesia is a stable ASEAN.

Something that the Philippine government should have tried to implement during the 50s and 60s.

#49268
And the Great Man that was Suharto Raya passes into the pages of History. His legend will be remembered by the millions of Indonesians for ages to come. Peace be upon him. The whole of the Malay race mourns a brother. The Filipino, who is part of the continuum of the proud and regal Malay Race shares this loss.

I have so much respect for this man. He is considered the 'Aguinaldo' of Indonesia.
The 240 million Indonesians have lost a great leader, and one that brought the nation of Indonesiya Raja out of the paralysis of Dutch Imperialism, into the Awakened Giant that Indonesia is to this day.

Thank you for sharing your personal story, Ate Ging. It always helps to hear another person's experience or one of their loved ones' experiences in these circumstances.

When i read this thread, I thought about what happened in 1998 right before and after the death of my Lola Nating (Mrs. Fortunata Tan-Salvo). On July the 15th of 1998, my father, mother, my sister and my brother Don (only 5 y/o at the time) and I went tubing in a freshwater stream in south jersey. On the latter half of the tubing route, we hit through deep water, where I fell of my tube and had to struggle to get in again, my sister went through a wooded bend and hurt herself in the process. Luckily for us tho, my father got out of the tube and swam to help me back into my tube, as well as helped my sister back to the group. When we drove back home to our place that afternoon, we were able to hear a message that my Lolo Ciano and relatives left in our answering machine, asking for more money for Lola Nating's medicine. The very next day, my mom left to go to the Filipino store to send some money for Lolo and Lola, but while she was gone, we received a call from Lola Babing (the sister of my Lola Nating, who lived in Van Nuys, California) that Lola Nating died the previous afternoon. Apparently, while Lolo and others drove to Tagbilaran to call our place, Lola Nating passed away, and when Lolo came back to Valencia after giving the call, he and the helpers found Lola Nating in her bed. Lolo collapsed after they told her that na matay si Lola. So while Lola Babing was telling us the situation, I had to keep my composure, and when this was happening, my mom already came back from the Filipino store. She asked me who called and I gave her the phone to talk to Lola Babing. Mom was silent, for almost 1 hour. She didn't even talk or say anything, but afterwards, all my sister and I could hear in her room was "Mama, Mama, Mama, Ngano man Mama, Mama...". It was hard on Mom as well as on Lola Babing.
We went back to Valencia for the burial of Lola Nating, and I remember my sister and I felt so grieved to see our Mom weep for her own Mom.

We were able to spend some time with our Lola Babing tho, (she actually came to our place for a month back in January 1998) and I know that my Lola Babing was close to Lola Nating. Immediately one month after the death of Lola Nating, we had a call from California informing us of the death of our Lola Babing.
It was hard for us, specially my Mom who was close to them both, and my sister who was close to Lola Babing.

I remember a couple of days after the incident my sister told me something that chilled me. She said that the previous night she had a dream that she was in church with Lola Babing, who was sitting next to her. Lola babing apparently told her to watch after the family for her, and make sure your mommy, daddy, kuya and brother Don will be alright. She hugged Angel, kissed her and walked towards the alter, and there was a great white light as Lola Babing walked closer to the Tabernacle and Altar.

I sometimes ask my sister about that dream, and she vividly still remembers it to this day, 10 years later after the fact.

I personally believe it is true. What was comforting for me was that the night my sister had the dream of Lola Babing in church with her, it was the day the prayer vigil ended for Lola Babing. As we asked elderly women to pray for Mrs. Balbina Tan Salingay for a week. It was as if Lola Babing wanted to say good Bye to all of us, but she told us through our sister.

Differing Perspectives on Death

For the entire existence of mankind, we have struggled with the question, "What happens after death?" Our answer to this dilemma has great implications for our life here on earth. Although many avoid the issue, we must sooner or later address the question. There are many competing answers to this question.

Atheists believe that at death one ceases to exist. There is no afterlife or eternal soul that continues in eternity. All there is to look forward to is our inevitable death, the future death of mankind, and the universe. It is in the face of this future that the atheist must seek to find meaning and purpose for his own existence.

The Eastern and New Age religions that hold to a pantheistic worldview teach that one goes through an endless cycle of reincarnation until the cycle is broken and the person becomes one with the divine. What form a person becomes in the next life depends on the quality of life lived in the previous life. When one unites with the divine, he ceases to exist as an individual, but becomes part of the divine life force, like a drop of water returning to the ocean.

Those who hold to the animistic or tribal religions believe that after death the human soul remains on the earth or travels to join the departed spirits of the ancestors in the underworld, also called the realm of the shadows. For eternity they wander in darkness, experiencing neither joy nor sorrow. Some of the spirits of the deceased may be called upon to aid or torment those on earth.

Islam teaches that at the end of history, God will judge the works of all men. Those whose good deeds outweigh their bad deeds will enter into paradise. The rest will be consigned to hell. The Koran teaches that in paradise men will be drinking wine and entertained by heavenly maidens and that they may take several of these maidens for their wives.

Most worldviews must accept their belief in the afterlife on untested faith, but the Christian hope is sure for two reasons; the resurrection of Christ and the testimony of God's Word. The Bible gives us the true view of what happens after death. However, many Christians have a misunderstanding of the afterlife. Some believe that they become one of the angels, others believe they go into a state of "soul sleep," while others believe they will be floating on clouds playing harps. In this article, we will examine some popular misconceptions of what lies beyond the grave and perceive what the Bible teaches.

Christians can be assured that death is not something to be feared. Instead, at death we arrive home in heaven. To live means we exist in a foreign country. Death has lost its sting and now is a victory through the resurrection of Jesus our Lord.

Near Death Experiences

For the past thirty years, thousands of people have reported experiencing what are called near death experiences (NDEs). NDEs are encounters where a person, being in full awareness, leaves the body and enters another world. Such experiences have resulted in life transformation in many individuals. What are we to make of these accounts?

Let us understand that NDEs come from those who have been clinically dead, not biologically dead. In clinical death, external life signs such as consciousness, pulse, and breathing cease. In such cases, biological death results if no steps are taken to reverse the process. Biological death, on the other hand, is not affected by any amount of attention, for it is physically irreversible.{1}

The NDE accounts occur at various stages of clinical death. Some occur when the patient is comatose, very close to death, or pronounced clinically dead. Other accounts occur when the patient's heart stops beating. Others occur while the patient's brain ceases to register any activity on the EEG monitor. There have not been any cases of biological or irreversible death for a significant amount of time followed by a resurrection.

What has intrigued scientists and theologians in their study of NDEs is that many of the patients have similar experiences. These include leaving the body and watching from above as doctors work on it, entering a dark tunnel, seeing light, seeing others, meeting a spirit being, experiencing peace, and then returning to the body.

Scientists and doctors from various worldviews have sought to explain this phenomenon. Those from an atheistic worldview have sought to give naturalistic explanations. Their explanations range from hallucination induced by medication, chemical reactions the brain experiences in near death crises, previous encounters long forgotten, and others. These fall short of explaining NDE events.

Many NDEs have occurred without medication. Drowning victims are one example. Also, thousands of NDE victims were able to clearly describe places and people with exact detail while they were clinically dead. One girl, while near dead, was able to describe what her family did that night at home, what was made for dinner, where everyone sat and even what was said. Others were able to describe in detail objects in rooms nearby and far away from them. One patient described a shoe on the rooftop of a hospital. When the nurses looked, they found the shoe exactly as described. A boy in an accident involving his brother and mother told those around him moments before he died, "They are waiting for me now." The doctor discovered that at that exact time in another hospital the boy's mother and brother had just died. Dr. Gary Habermas and J.P. Moreland provide a comprehensive discussion of NDEs in their book Beyond Death, arguing that naturalistic explanations cannot satisfactorily explain the events that occur in NDEs.

NDEs may not conclusively prove there is a heaven or hell, but they do indicate that at death the soul separates from the body, and that a person's spirit is conscious and coherent at death.

However, NDEs do not accurately reflect what lies beyond the grave. NDEs deal with accounts that give a short glimpse behind the curtain of death and therefore they give us an incomplete picture. Colossians 1:18 tells us that Jesus "is the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy." Christ overcame biological death and lives forevermore as ruler over all creation. His supremacy over everything was established through His resurrection. Also, we know that Satan masquerades as an angel of light and can produce counterfeit appearances. It is imperative that we evaluate all experiences in light of Scripture.

Can We Communicate with the Dead?

Do the spirits of the dead have the ability to communicate with the living? One of the most popular current TV shows is "Crossing Over," with psychic John Edward. He, like other psychics, claims to have the ability to communicate with the spirits of the deceased. He amazes spectators with his ability to reveal details about which only the deceased loved one may have known. From this communication, people attempt to receive comfort, advice, and encouragement.

The Bible teaches that communication with the dead is not possible. Throughout the Bible God commands His people not to indulge in the practice of necromancy, the art of communicating with the dead.

Deuteronomy 18:10-11 states,

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead . . .

The Canaanites consulted spirits and the dead in hopes of gaining power and predicting future events. This practice is an abomination to God and it is for this reason the Canaanites were ejected from the land. Israel was warned not to imitate the Canaanites or they too would suffer a similar fate.

Contacting the dead is forbidden because the spirits of the dead cannot contact the living. In Luke 16, the rich man who was suffering in hell sought a way to communicate with his living family to warn them of their fate. However, he was not able to communicate in any way nor could the living communicate with him.

Who, then, are mediums and spiritists contacting? If they are indeed contacting a spiritual being, it is most likely a demonic counterfeit. Although the demonic spirit may communicate some truths, the ultimate intention of the spirit is to deceive and take one away from the Lord. This practice can ultimately lead to demonic possession and injury to the person.

In Acts 16:16 Paul encountered girl who could predict the future because a spirit possessed her. Knowing this, Paul eventually cast the spirit out of the girl. Throughout the Bible the practice of necromancy is forbidden.

Some will try to defend necromancy by pointing to 1 Samuel 28. Here Saul requests the Witch of Endor to call up Samuel from the grave. The spirit of Samuel arises and delivers a prophetic message to Saul. Bible scholars take two views on this. Some believe it was a demonic counterfeit masquerading as Samuel. I believe since the prophecy given came to pass, this was indeed Samuel the prophet. Despite Saul's disobedience to God, God made an exception here.

Whichever view you take, it is clear this verse does not encourage one to consult mediums. Saul at this point in his life was out of God's will and because the Spirit of God had left him, he could not receive any word from God. In desperation, he disobeyed God as was the pattern of his life and suffered the consequence. His story teaches us a lesson and is not an example to follow.

One Minute After Death

What happens when we breathe our final breath? The Bible teaches what will occur.

First our immaterial soul and spirit will be separated from our physical body. Second, we will immediately receive the judgment that will determine our eternal destiny. Those who have trusted in Christ's payment on the cross for our sins will enter into eternal life in the presence of God. 2 Corinthians 5:8 states, "We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord." There will be no delay in a state of unconsciousness many call "soul sleep." We will immediately be in God's presence.

Second, the soul in heaven is made perfect in holiness and our old sin nature is eradicated. Hebrews 12:23 mentions "the spirits of righteous men made perfect." The spirits of the saints are in heaven and they have been made perfect. The struggle with sin that Paul described and all Christians fight comes to an end forever when we, after death, enter our glorified state.

Those who reject this gift, will receive what they have chosen, eternity separated from God in Hell. Hebrews 9:27 states, "Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment." There is no second chance and there is no cycle of reincarnation. Our eternal destiny is determined by the decision we make for Christ here on earth.

Many assume that after receiving Christ all that remains is a joyful entrance into heaven. Scripture teaches that Jesus will reward us according to how we lived our life on earth. He taught this principle in the parable of the talents in Luke 19. Each servant was entrusted to administer the talents the master gave him. Upon the return of the master, each servant had to give an account for his stewardship. The wise servants were rewarded doubly while the wicked servant was removed.

The lesson for the Christian is that each of us will give an account for our time here on earth. This is not the same as being judged on our salvation status. Christ's death on the cross allows all who believe to enter God's kingdom. We will be judged on our works done since the time of our salvation. This judgment of believers is called the Bema Seat judgment. This event is described in 1 Corinthians 3:11-15:

For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay or straw, each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. If any man's work, which he has built upon it, remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire.

Paul states that Christ is our foundation. Our works are the building on this foundation. The materials of gold, silver, and precious stones refer to works done with pure motives for the glory of God. The works of wood, hay, and straw are works done with the wrong motives to glorify self.

At the Bema Seat, our works will be tested with divine fire. Those works that were done for the glory of God will endure the flames and will be our reward. Some will regretfully see all their works on earth burned up before their eyes and enter heaven with little or no reward.

The unbeliever will be judged and sentenced to hell. At the end of the age, he faces the Great White Throne judgment. Here, all the unrighteous dead from the beginning of time are judged based on their rejection of the Savior. They are then thrown into the lake of fire for eternity. Revelation 20:11-15 says:

And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and the books were opened; . . . and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. . . . And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Knowing that as Christians we will one day give an account for our lives, we should live as wise stewards over what God has given us. Knowing the fate of the unsaved should fill us with boldness to share Christ unashamedly, with urgency to all. Knowing what lies beyond the grave should motivate us to live life on earth with a mission.

What Will We Be Like in Heaven?

Upon our physical death, the soul is separated from the body and enters immediately into the presence of the Lord. Looking again at Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 5:8, he says, "We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord." The soul in heaven is made perfect in holiness and our old sin nature is eradicated. As discussed above, Hebrews 12:23 mentions "the spirits of righteous men made perfect." The spirits of the saints are in heaven and they have been made perfect. The struggle that Paul and all Christians fight with sin comes to an end forever when we, after death, enter our glorified state.

We will not remain in heaven as a soul without a body. At God's appointed time, there will be a final resurrection where the spirit will be unified with the resurrected body. Although Christians have various views on when this resurrection will take place, we all agree on the resurrection of the body. What will the resurrected body look like?

Philippians 3:20-21 says, "And we eagerly await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body." 1 John 3:2 promises, "But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is."

From these two passages we know that our glorified bodies will be like that of Christ. We will not be deified, but we will have the same qualities of His resurrection body. First, our heavenly bodies will be our glorified earthly bodies. Christ's body that died on the cross was the same one that was resurrected. His glorified body was able to travel through walls, appear suddenly, and ascend to heaven.

2 Corinthians 5:1 reads, "[W]e have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands." The hands of God will make the resurrected body. 1 Corinthians 15:39-40, 42b-43 tells us:

All flesh is not the same: Men have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. . . . The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

In answering the mockers of the resurrection, Paul explains that our heavenly bodies will possess flesh that is of a different variety than our earthly ones. They will be bodies of flesh, but as different from our earthly bodies as humans are from animals.

We further conclude that, like a seed, the body will be sown or buried and then one day be raised to life. It is buried in death, decay, weakness, and dishonor. When it is resurrected, it will be changed in every way. It is raised imperishable, glorious, powerful, and spiritual. We will then have eternal, permanent, and perfected bodies.

We will also maintain our identities. In Luke 16:23, Lazarus, the rich man, and Abraham all retained their identity. Imagine, one day we will no longer struggle with the weakness of sin, sickness, and aging. A great future is in store for those in Christ.

What Will We Do in Heaven?

What will we do in heaven for all eternity? Some envision playing golf for eternity, while others envision saints floating on clouds strumming harps of gold. Although great thoughts, they fall short of the glorious future that actually awaits those in Christ. We are told relatively little about what activities will occur in heaven. We are only given a brief glimpse of our life to come.

First, the moment that saints of all the ages anticipate is seeing the Lord they served face to face. This will be the first and greatest moment after physical death. From then on we will have fellowship in His presence for all eternity.

Second, our life in heaven involves worship. A vivid picture is found in Revelation 19:1-5:

After this I heard what seemed to be the mighty voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying, "Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for true and just are his judgments. . . ." And again they shouted, "Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever." And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God who was seated on the throne, saying, "Amen. Hallelujah." Then a voice came from the throne saying: "Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him both small and great."

Like the sound of roaring waters comes the praise from the saints of all ages. Recently the men from our church described the experience of singing the hymn How Great Thou Art at a Promise Keepers conference. Nothing they said could accurately describe that majestic experience. The closest they could come to putting it into words was, "Awesome! Just awesome!" Can you imagine what it will be like when we sing "Holy, Holy, Holy" along with the saints of all ages in the presence of God? Our worship here is preparation for our future, grand worship in heaven.

Third is the aspect of rest. Heavenly rest here does not mean a cessation from activity, but the experience of reaching a goal of crucial importance. In Hebrews 4:9-11 the writer, addressing the people of God states, "There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his." Heaven is the final goal reached after our pilgrimage here on earth. We will rest from our sufferings and struggles against sickness, the flesh, the world, and the devil.

Fourth, we will serve the Lord. Luke 19:11-27 teaches a parable about stewardship. The wise servants who multiplied their master's talents were given rule over ten and five cities. Revelation 22:3 tells us, "The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city and his servants will serve him." In 1 Corinthians 6:3 Paul rebukes the carnal Christians who cannot settle their own disputes and asks them, "Do you not know that we will judge angels?" In Revelation 3:21 the Lord Jesus promises, "To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with Me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne." Apparently we will be given authority over a sphere in God's eternal kingdom. How much we are given depends on our faithfulness to Him on this earth.

Fifth, we will experience fellowship with God and with one another. One of the most painful experiences in life is to say goodbye. Whether it is to see loved ones move to another residence or because of death, farewells are a painful time. For the Christian, there is hope in knowing, our goodbyes are not permanent. One day we will meet again and this time we will never say goodbye again. What awaits the believer after death is a glorious future that cannot truly be imagined!

Book Reviews / Reply: Do You Still Read Books?

Hahaha i can see my younger self in you, Kyle.

You know when I was in the 5th grade, during lunch break, I would take my lunch bag and go to the school library. I was obsessed about Dinosaurs back then, I would take 5-9 books on dinosaurs, paleontology, etc and just read. One time i was reading one book that engrossed me about the Bronchiosaurus, one of the largest herbivore species to ever walk this earth, that i forgot the time and was late to class--45 minutes late. LOL. I borrowed that book over 3 times, hahaha. I used to get 'late book notices' from the library because i didnt want to part from the book.

LOL

Good 'ol' days.

Its crazy how expensive college tuition is over here!! Its unbelievable how much it increases from year to year tho, when I was a freshman in Allegheny College, the total tuition including room and board was about $32,000 a year, sophomore year it rose again to $34,000, junior year it rose again to $37,000, and now im paying $40,500 this year. And thank God I'm leaving, because I hear the tuition will also increase again next year to $41-42K. Though my sister will experience that because she also goes to Allegheny, as a junior this year.

Im just grateful for my parents having to bear the brunt. Next year tho I'm planning to take medical school loans, because the first year tuition for medical schools ranges from anywhere from $55,000-$60,000+, and this is not including room and board. Or personal expenses, or hospital visitation fees.

Its ridiculous. I swear, they make it so hard to proceed into the field of medicine. I mean I'll never be able to pay my college debt until i'm like 40 or something. Its ridiculous, specially the APR rates on some of these medical school loans. One loan that I'm applying right now, which is the Terri Loan and the Medical School Professional Loans have interest rates that ranges anywhere between 20%-30%. So if say student A takes out a a $250,000 medical school loan, he or she would be responsible to pay upon graduation of medical school over $325,000 (plus hidden costs). I have a very close friend, Ranjit Singh, M.D, who recently graduated from Ross University School of Medicine, is a 1st year intern at Northern Virginia Health Systems, he told me that he's paying $1,500 a month for loans, and he only gets paid $38,000 a year as a medical resident intern, it makes it difficult paying and providing primary needs as well, i mean, the guy takes home about 2k a month, rent, gas, electricity, gas, food etc.

Its crazy.

Mr. Ayag, i hope and pray that your mother is in good health. In the words of my Lolo Casiano Salvo, "Bata pa man na" (he was regarding his birthday celebration here in our house back in New Jersey in 2003-2004), celebrating his 77th birthday, mga jokester jokester jud siya despite his age, hahaha. Pero you know, though he liked it here in the 'states, he would always talk about our Lola who passed away IN 1998. You could tell, without him saying it to us directly, that he was severely homesick. Ning balik siya sa Bohol in 2005 kai na mingaw man gud siya sa Pinas. He said before he left that ning anhi ra kono siya sa Amerika kai gusto man siya mo tan-aw sa iyang anaks (his daughters: my mom and my aunt are here), iyang mga apo (myself, my sister, my brother don, brother andre, and cousin Leslie). To fulfill the dream that my dear Lola Nating wanted, which was for her and my lolo to come to the 'US to see their family. That is why he felt mingaw-mingaw when he was here, because na wa' naman si Lola gud.

Ako, gusto ko mo balik sa bohol to see my Lolo. My main reason for going to Bohol this summer is to see my Lolo again, everything else is secondary. I can feel the time having its effect on my Lolo, and I don't know how much long he has to be with us, but we were mostly concerned in keeping him comfortable for the most part. And Bohol is home for him, specially Valencia :) I just want to see my Lolo Ciano one more time with my own eyes, and hear his voice with my own ears and not through a telephone or a card. And most of all, to hug him and have him hug me. This is afterall the man that used to carry me when I was 2 y/o on his shoulder, used to feed me with his hands, and used to take me everday to Badjang and teach me how to swim. My Lolo...i miss you..... :'( :'( :'( :'(

Mr. Ayag, I wish to see you this summer pohon this July. Perhaps you probably know my dad and or some relatives of mine. Please extend my regards to your family, Mr. Ayag.

God Bless you.
