Love Talk / Pros and cons to cohabitation
November 18, 2009, 04:10:22 PM
Pros:
1. Little planning needed. No invitations, wedding expenses, honeymoon expenses, name changes, prenup, blood test, photos

2. Fast. Gets one out of the dating scene. Away from the evils of AIDS etc.

3. Acts as a test for how well it will work, how well one gets along.

4. Cheaper than keeping up two places. "Two can live as cheaply as one" as long as one doesn't eat, drive separately or need healthcare.

5. If both people are sensible, they will tend to use birth control, which will save the couple money, time, sanity, and be environmentally more friendly.

6. Is often done secretly more or less, which can be an advantage or disadvantage.

7. Can be flexible, eg start and stop, restart, without legal hassles.

Cons:

1. Looked down upon by many in society, especially conservatives. Looks more promiscious even if it is a committed relationship.

2. A little sordid, eg 'shacking up'. Less serious than marriage.

3. There is no celebration to notify and signify the importance of the occasion and the relationship

4. Statistically lower chance of sucess than marrying directly.

5. Disadvantage of marriage: Couple may be encouraged to have children quicker, which they may not be ready for or be able to afford.

6. Religious concerns.

7. There is not a lot of society and legal pressure to stay together if one party starts to lose interest (this can also be seen as a pro)

Sports and Fitness / All Mayweather does is run - Roach
November 18, 2009, 03:35:18 PM
HOLLYWOOD -- Freddie Roach’s hands shook with excitement as he talked about a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“It will be the biggest pay-per-view event of all time,” said the man who just steered Manny Pacquiao to a historic 12th round technical knockout of Miguel Cotto last Saturday at the MGM Grand.

Roach said a fight with Mayweather, which may or may not happen, will break all existing records if it does, and will be watched by more people even if it wouldn’t be as exciting as Pacquiao’s previous fights.

The three-time American trainer of the year smiled when told that Mayweather, who came out of a long retirement to beat Juan Marquez last September, said Pacquiao remains a “one-dimensional” fighter.

“One dimensional? Well let’s fight and see,” said Roach.

“If that’s the case, all he does is run. He’s one dimensional, too -- run, run, run. Then we’ll attack, attack, attack and that will make it a big fight,” said Roach who just saw Pacquiao off the door of his gym.

Pacquiao dropped by at the Wild Card Gym late in the afternoon as part of a tradition. He always visits the gym on the Monday after a fight, get a few words with his chief trainer, and greet his loyal supporters.

The pound-for-pound champion did not stay long this time as he needed to go to a nearby hospital to have x-rays on his swollen right hand. However, he said he felt better now than the day after the fight.

He heard about Mayweather’s comment that he’s a one-dimensional fighter.

“Ako? Eh, yun ang style ko eh (But that’s my style). In and out, in and out,” he said.

Roach said a fight with Mayweather would be difficult to make because of all the money involved, adding that if the flamboyant American would agree to a 60/40 split, in Pacquiao’s favor, then it could happen.

“We need to negotiate for the money and the weight, but I want the fight at 145 lb. Mayweather still doesn’t have that huge audience so I would go for 60-40 for Manny,” said Roach.

Roach added that if it’s Mayweather, March 13, being penciled by Top Rank as the date for Pacquiao’s next fight, may not be a good date.

“If it’s Mayweather, we need time to get ready for that fight. We have to come out with a real different style. It’s a whole different ballgame,” he said, adding that there wouldn’t be a need for a tune-up fight if that’s the case.

“If we get Mayweather, why risk losing that (tune-up) fight. I’d say he rest for a while, enjoy the holidays, run for elections, and the Congressman Manny Pacquiao will kick Mayweather’s ass,” said Roach.

Roach said while last Saturday’s fight looked one-sided to some, it should definitely be more exciting than a Pacquiao-Mayweather.

“Cotto came to fight and Mayweather comes to run. He makes a boring fight, but a lot of people will buy tickets to see him lose. So it would be a huge fight. I agree, but it would be less exciting than other Manny Pacquiao fights.

“It could be like when Cotto started running in the end, and Manny said, “Do you want to run or do you want to fight?’” - By Abac Cordero (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

History / The Russian mystery
November 18, 2009, 03:32:37 PM
It has been almost a century since the brutal execution of the Romanov family, and yet their deaths and last days at the Ipatiev House still remain a mystery.

History has recorded violent deaths, and even dumbfounding conspiracies. But it was the murder of Russia's last imperial family which went down in history as a major puzzle, even to their own countrymen. Maybe it was because during that fateful day in July of 1918, only Lieutenant Yurovsky and his men were present to carry out the family's death. On Lenin's orders, chief executioner Yurovsky and his men ordered Tsar Nicholas II and his family, along with their four remaining loyal servants, to go down the basement of the Ipatiev House.

Tsar Nicholas II carried his hemophiliac son Alexei in his arm, and the family followed. Tsaritsa Alexandra demanded for chairs, and three were given - one for her, her son, and her husband. Lieutenant Yurovsky then entered with his men, and informed the Tsar that they were ordered to execute him and his family.

The poor Tsar only had moments to utter, ''What? What?'' when he was gunned down in front of his family. The Tsaritsa followed, then the rest of the family. It was hard to believe such a vivid picture has been recaptured by historians. But then again, their story has been romanticized a hundred times over. The girls managed to survive the shooting, as they were wearing corsets made of diamonds and precious gems. But because of this, they were spared from quick deaths, as they were later stabbed by the executioners using bayonets.

A Fate No Man Deserves

Yes, the Tsar abhorred violence, though it was because of him Bloody Sunday came about. But he did not deserve his death nor his family and servants.

But as long as the Tsar or any of the family was still alive, the Bolsheviks have a lot to fear. More particularly, Lenin's stature was at stake. The thing with power and royalty is that many people vied for it. Has it ever been a question why the Romanovs were executed? Why Marie Antoinette had to suffer the guillotine, and why Julius Caesar was stabbed?

These people were mere victims of birthright. Had Tsar Nicholas II known what was to become of his family, he probably would have given his life to save them. But he did not know, and the family remained forever hopeful that one day, their supporters would come and free them.

During their 78 days at the Ipatiev House, the family had to suffer from the brutish Bolsheviks. They were granted limited luxuries, and were often abused by the guards. Tsaritsa Alexandra, because of her steadfast reliance on Rasputin, was even openly called ''the German bitch'', for she was rumored to have had an illicit relationship with the mad monk.

It is heartbreaking to think that the Romanov family has totally vanquished, and that they suffered during their last days. Many people liked to believe that somehow, one of the Romanovs survived, and it is on this foolish hope that several counterfeiters played their cards on. Most famous of these counterfeiters is Anna Anderson, who claimed to be the mischievous Anastasia. But in 1991, her claim was disproven for the real Anastasia's bones were discovered.

The loose ends regarding the family's deaths continue to confound even the most die-hard historians, and even if medical technology claims to have solved the mystery, there are still several unanswered questions for many still cannot accept their execution, completely devoid of sense and compassion. One can only hope that in the case of the Romanovs, history will not repeat itself.

MANILA - Veteran actress and director Gina Alajar was evasive Tuesday when sought for comment on the alleged affair between People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao and young sexy star Krista Ranillo.

In a phone interview, Alajar refused to further comment on the issue, saying she already issued a statement to a popular newspaper.

"Hindi na ako magco-comment doon," Alajar said.

Alajar was dragged into the issue after she posted a controversial shout out in her Facebook account in connection with the alleged Pacquiao-Ranillo affair. She wrote: “If I were Jinkee Pacquiao, I would not give up Manny. Krista Ranillo is not at all worth it!”

In 2001, reports said Alajar and former husband Michael de Mesa ended their marriage supposedly because of the actor’s alleged love affair with Ranillo, who is a current columnist for men’s magazine Maxim.

In a previous interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Pacquiao also sealed his lips on the issue.

"No comment ako diyan," said the pound-for-pound king in an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com before he flew to Las Vegas.

The popular boxer also clammed up when asked to comment on reports that he and his “Wapakman” leading lady were spotted dating in Hong Kong.

Prior to Pacquiao’s fight on November 15 (Manila time), reports said the boxer and his wife, Jinkee, allegedly had an argument over a rumor that he was caught going inside Ranillo's hotel room in Las Vegas.

Ranillo was reportedly in the United States with her father, veteran actor Mat Ranillo III, to watch Pacquiao’s fight with Miguel Cotto.

Ranillo’s camp has already denied these rumors. Ranillo’s manager, Arnold Vegafria, maintained that the sexy star and Pacquiao are just “good friends.”

"She said that they are good friends and they are going out together as a group. That's all I know," Vegafria said.

Vegafria added: "They are doing a movie together. Krista and two of my artists are his leading ladies - Krista and Bianca King... I think this is also part of the promo. We will see. I will talk to Krista when she comes back."

Vegafria also maintained that Ranillo is happy being single.

"She's very aware of what's happening but she just laughed it off. And I spoke to her, she denied it. Sabi niya sa akin Manny is a married man and hindi siya pwedeng makisali. So ganoon, hanggang friends lang," Vegafria said. -Report by Reyma Buan-Deveza, abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA â€" Amid persistent speculations about his alleged affair with sexy star Krista Ranillo, People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao has lashed back at his detractors for focusing too much on his private life instead of his feat.

“Kaya siguro tayo hindi umaasenso, pinakikialaman nila ang personal na buhay ng iba. Ang sa akin, siguro pagtuunan lang [natin] ng pansin [ang] dapat trabahuhin [natin]. Hindi ‘yong private life [ko],” Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News.

He added: “Sana i-honor nila ‘yong na-achieve kong achievement para sa ating mga Filipino. Like what I said, alisin muna natin ang tinatawag nating crab mentality. Nakikiusap ako sa inyong lahat na… magkaisa tayong lahat para masaya tayong lahat.”

The People’s Champ, however, still refused to put all speculations to rest.

“No comment ako about that issue. Tahimik lang ako. Bahala na silang mag magke-kuwento,” he said.

Speculations about Pacquiao and Ranillo’s alleged affair surfaced after the two began shooting for their film “Wapakman.” Rumor has it that the two were spotted spending time together in Hong Kong.

Ranillo’s talent manager, Arnold Vegafria, has already dismissed the speculations, saying that the boxer and the sexy star were just “good friends.”

The rumors have reportedly put a strain on Pacquiao’s marriage. This was apparent during a Thanksgiving mass held after his bout with Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Pacquiao’s wife, Jinkee, burst into tears as the priest, in his homily, talked about love and the importance of family.

Footage showed that Pacquiao tried to console Jinkee but she shunned him. She instead turned to her female friend for comfort.

Meanwhile, when asked if Ranillo was aware of the rumors, Vegafria said: "She's very aware of what's happening but she just laughed it off. And I spoke to her, she denied it. Sabi niya sa akin Manny is a married man and hindi siya pwedeng makisali. So ganoon, hanggang friends lang.” - Report from Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News

Health Sec. Francisco Duque III demonstrates what people will be up against if they get injured from firecrackers.

MANILA - If you don't want your fingers chopped off, then lay off firecrackers this holiday season.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday launched its "Zero Paputok (Zero Firecrackers)" campaign to warn the public about the perils of using firecrackers during the Christmas season and New Year's Day.

To prove the point, DOH Sec. Francisco Duque III on Monday gave a demonstration of what firecracker injury victims are in for when they go to the hospital.

Duque brandished a hand surgery saw that can be used to amputate hands, Bone Rongeurs (that look like silver pliers) to trim bones, and instruments to drill bones.

The demonstration was meant to scare or discourage those who are planning to use firecrackers. The agency is campaigning for a total firecracker ban in residential areas nationwide to avoid firecracker-related injuries.

The DOH encouraged the public to play loud music, bang pots and pans, or use "torotot" or trumpets instead of playing with firecrackers when they celebrate Christmas and New Year's Day.

Common firecracker-related injuries

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jean-Pierre Leung of Benguet General Hospital said in a phone interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak that injuries from firecrackers can range from mild to severe, depending on the type of firecracker used.

"Mild ones are burns on the fingers. More severe ones can blast off part of the hand. Or in some cases, some parts of the body like the eyes," he said.

"I've had cases where we had to amputate at the wrist of forearm. Of course that's the worst case scenario," said Leung, who worked at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) from 1993 to 1998.

Leung said that during his time at the PGH, doctors would "fill up buckets of fingers that [they] had cut off" from patients who suffered from firecracker-caused injuries.

"Mostly, [injuries] are found in the hands and fingers because that's what we use to hold the firecrackers," he explained.

Leung said the gunpowder and filler materials (like soil) used in firecrackers can also cause secondary infections or tetanus among patients.

Hard to treat

He said blast injuries are particularly hard to treat because the explosion kills a lot of skin and muscle tissue, making it hard to reconstruct that part of the body.

"Even if you don't amputate, the tissue left behind is scarred, so it's hard to get good function [in that body part] after a blast injury," Leung told abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak.

Recovery time is long for blast injuries and burns, and patients sometimes need to take antibiotics and stay confined at the hospital for several days while their wounds close.

Other complications to look out for are asthma or respiratory ailments from the smoke left behind when firecrackers explode.

Pyrotechnic experts

Dangerous explosives include Judas belts, which fire up randomly once one small explosive round is lighted, as well as Pla-Pla, Atomic Bombs, and Baby Dynamites.

Firecrackers like "watusi", supposedly recommended for children, are poisonous when ingested.

Leung added, however, that firecracker injury cases have generally seemed to lessen over the years. "There has been a trend for [the use of] imported fireworks. It's actually safer because instead of participating, people watch fireworks displays instead," he said.

Firecrackers that caused the most injuries in 2008 were Piccolo fireworks, "Kwitis", Five Star, "Luces" (sparkler), and homemade firecrackers.

According to DOH data, 733 people were injured by firecrackers while 17 were injured by stray bullets from December 21 last year to January 5 this year. Duque said this was 28% lower than the previous 4-year average.

Local government units (LGUs) proposed to designate a time and place for lighting up fireworks in every town, to be supervised by a pyrotechnics expert. This is to avoid accidents.

The Philippine National Police, meanwhile, is also pitching on efforts to reduce firecracker injuries by confiscating illegal fireworks like Bawang, Super Lolo, Thunder, and Boga. Stores that sell illegal firecrackers will be closed down. -- Report by Kristine Servando, abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak. With a report from Sol Aragones, ABS-CBN News.

Zongzi (also known as rice dumpling) is traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival (Mandarin: Duanwu; Cantonese: Tuen Ng) which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar (approximately early to mid-June), commemorating the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet from the kingdom of Chu who lived during the Warring States period. Known for his patriotism, Qu Yuan tried unsuccessfully to warn his king and countrymen against the expansionism of their Qin neighbors. When the Qin Dynasty general Bai Qi took Yingdu, the Chu capital, in 278 BC, Qu Yuan's grief was so intense that he drowned himself in the Miluo river after penning the Lament for Ying. According to legend, packets of rice were thrown into the river to prevent fish from eating the poet's body.  Another version states that zongzi were given to placate a dragon that lived in the river.

Description
The shape of zongzi range from being relatively tetrahedral in southern Chinese cultures to more cylindrical in northern Chinese cultures. Wrapping a zongzi neatly is a skill which is passed down through families, as are the recipes. Like tamale-making in Mexico and Pamonha-making in Brazil, making zongzi was traditionally a family event with everyone helping out.

While traditional Chinese zongzi are wrapped in bamboo leaves, the leaves of lotus, maize, banana, canna, shell ginger or pandan leaves are sometimes used as substitutes in other countries. Each kind of leaf imparts its own unique smell and flavor to the rice.

The fillings used for zongzi vary from region to region, but the rice used is always glutinous rice (also called sticky or sweet rice). Depending on the region, the rice may be lightly precooked by stir-frying or soaked in water before using.

Zongzi need to be steamed or boiled for several hours depending on how the rice is made prior to adding the fillings. Once cooked, the zongzi can easily be frozen for later consumption. Frozen zongzi are available for sale in many Chinese markets.
