Columnist Conrado de Quiros cited three reasons why Ram’s murder “will go down in the annals of Philippine crime, already awash with blood, as one of the grisliest ever.”

First, “because it was done by siblings. Numbed as we are to violence, some things still manage to shock us. This is one of them. To this day, it’s all people can do to grasp the appalling depths of the crime. How can you even contemplate murdering someone you grew up with however alienated you have become, however pissed off at him you have gotten?”

Second, “because it was done by people in the flush of youth. Mara is 21, and RJ, the apparent mastermind, is 18. That they should think nothing of ending the life of a brother who has known only 23 summers, that is something that happens only in twisted psychological thrillers”

Third, “because it was done by people for nothing more than money. Or so that is how the story is shaping up. The shallowness of the motive contrasts with the profundity of the atrocity. Of course a million bucks in monthly allowance is something to die for, or kill for, but only so metaphorically. You’ve got to wonder what kind of values these kids grew up with.”

The fear of producing idiots
By Rodel Rodis
7:00 pm | Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

SAN FRANCISCOâ€"When Sen. Ramon Revilla, Sr. was undergoing surgery at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto in 2003, he was regularly visited by consuls from the local Philippine Consulate. As he did not know how his surgery would turn out, Sen. Revilla candidly shared information about his personal life.

“I have 81 children,” Sen. Revilla disclosed. “I make sure they all know each other because my biggest fear is that siblings who don’t know their common father might unknowingly couple and produce idiots,” he said in Tagalog.

Unfortunately for Sen. Revilla, although his wish for a successful surgery was realized, his expectation of confidentiality from the consuls was not. Even before he was discharged from Stanford Hospital, tongues were already wagging all over the Bay Area with the news that he had fathered 81 children.

Unfortunately also for Sen. Revilla, he was right to fear producing idiots.

Recently, on October 28, Sen. Revilla’s 23-year old son, Ramgen Bautista aka “Ram Revilla”, was murdered at his home in Paranaque, sustaining multiple stab wounds and a gunshot to his head.

One of his killers, arrested soon after the killing, confessed to police authorities that he was hired by Ram’s 18-year old brother, Ramon Joseph “RJ” Bautista aka RJ Revilla, and by his 22-year old sister, Ramona Belen “Mara” Bautista aka Ramona Revilla.

After his alleged role in the killing of his brother was revealed, RJ was arrested. But Mara was able to flee to Turkey before a hold order for her could be issued.

What was the sibling dispute that could have caused the murder?

According to newspaper reports, a P1 million ($21,000) monthly allowance from Sen. Revilla for his nine children with Genelyn Magsaysay (daughter of Sen. Gene Magsaysay) was the cause. Ramgen, the eldest of Revilla’s children with Genelyn, handled the P1 million allowance and reportedly refused to pay for an SUV ordered by RJ.

A spokesman for Sen. Bong Revilla, Ramon Revilla’s eldest son by his first wife, disclosed to the press that his father has a total of 72 children by 16 women, about 9 less than what Revilla Sr. personally revealed to the consuls in 2003.

According to Lolit Solis, the talent manager of Sen. Bong Revilla. “He (Revilla Sr) does not neglect his children. He takes care of all of them.”

In her column this past week, columnist/blogger Ellen Tordesillas expressed amazement: “If that is so, he (Revilla Sr) must be rolling in money. Imagine if you multiply the P1 million monthly allowance that he gives to one “family” by 16, that would be P16 million a month. It’s not a one- shot gift. It’s a monthly subsidy!”

“Isn’t he amazing?” Tordesillas wrote. “Business students should study how Revilla Sr has parlayed a showbiz career to politics to financial bonanza.”

“In his 12-years as senator, Revilla Sr acquired a franchise to the very lucrative public works committee which he has passed on to his son, Bong. After Revilla retired from the Senate, Gloria Arroyo appointed him chairman of the Public Estates Authority, an agency that serves as clearing house of all reclamation projects. President Aquino retained him for that position (until he resigned last month),” Tordesillas added.

As a senator, Revilla is most famous for sponsoring a 2004 amendment to the Family Code which states that “The illegitimate children may use the surname of their father if their affiliation has been expressly recognized by the father through the record of birth appearing in the civil register, or when an admission in a public document or private handwritten instrument is made by the father.”

“The child should not suffer the stigma of his illegitimacy,” Sen. Revilla Sr. said.

While married to his first wife, Azucena Mortel (the mother of Sen. Bong Revilla), Revilla Sr. met 18-year  old Genelyn Magsaysay, who was 40 years his junior and three years younger than Bong. Their non-marital union produced nine children including Ramgen, Mara and RJ.

In her Facebook page, Genelyn posted this note: “To have nine children is not simple…They have different attitudes. Different likes and dislikes and you need to adjust. Especially I’m the only one who’s facing the little troubles given us by the Lord.”

When I first heard the news about the 81 children of Sen. Ramon Revilla, I asked: Why did he want to father so many children? Did he have a Johnny Appleseed complex where he wanted to plant his seeds in as many women as he could during his lifetime?

Columnist Conrado de Quiros cited three reasons why Ram’s murder “will go down in the annals of Philippine crime, already awash with blood, as one of the grisliest ever.”

First, “because it was done by siblings. Numbed as we are to violence, some things still manage to shock us. This is one of them. To this day, it’s all people can do to grasp the appalling depths of the crime. How can you even contemplate murdering someone you grew up with however alienated you have become, however pissed off at him you have gotten?”

Palawan’s underground river among New7Wonders
Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls make it to the new list

Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn (center) shows New Seven Wonders Foundation president Bernard Weber and director Jean-Paul de la Fuente the awe-inspiring sights of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in this photo taken on Oct. 23, 2011. RODEL ROTONI

GENEVAâ€"The Amazon rainforest, Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Argentina’s Iguazu Falls were named among the world’s new seven wonders of nature, according to organisers of a global poll.

The other four crowned the world’s natural wonders are South Korea’s Jeju Island, Indonesia’s Komodo, the Philippines’ Puerto Princesa Underground River and South Africa’s Table Mountain, said the New7Wonders foundation, citing provisional results.

Final results will be announced early 2012, said the Swiss foundation, warning however that there may yet be changes between the provisional winners and the final list.

Sites which have failed to make the cut include Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, the Dead Sea and the US Grand Canyon.

The poll organised by Swiss foundation New7Wonders has attracted great interest, mobilising celebrities including Argentinian football star Lionel Messi calling on fans to pick his home country’s Iguazu Falls.

The results come after a long consultation process lasting from December 2007 to July 2009, when world citizens were asked to put forward sites which they deemed were natural wonders.

More than a million votes were cast to trim the list of more than 440 contenders in over 220 countries down to a shortlist of 77.

The group was then further cut to the 28 finalists by a panel of experts.

Anyone in the world was then able to vote for the final seven via telephone, text messages or Internet social networks.

Founded in 2001 by filmmaker Bernard Weber in Zurich, the foundation New7Wonders is based on the same principle on which the seven ancient wonders of the world were established. That list of seven wonders was attributed to Philon of Byzantium in ancient Greece.

New7Wonders said its aim is to create a global memory by garnering participation worldwide.

But even as the natural wonders poll came to a close, the New7Wonders foundation has set its eyes on a new survey â€" the top seven cities of the world. Participating cities will be announced on January 1, 2012. -- http://globalnation.inquirer.net/

Science and Research / Magnetic levitation
November 07, 2011, 08:52:08 PM
Magnetic levitation, maglev, or magnetic suspension is a method by which an object is suspended with no support other than magnetic fields. Magnetic pressure is used to counteract the effects of the gravitational and any other accelerations.

Earnshaw's theorem proves that using only static ferromagnetism it is impossible to stably levitate against gravity, but servomechanisms, the use of diamagnetic materials, superconduction, or systems involving eddy currents permit this to occur.

In some cases the lifting force is provided by magnetic levitation, but there is a mechanical support bearing little load that provides stability. This is termed pseudo-levitation.

Magnetic levitation is used for maglev trains, magnetic bearings and for product display purposes. --Wiki

Blessed Pedro Calungsod
Monument to the History of Cebu
Plaza Colon, Cebu, Philippines

#48858
Too often, Catholic feasts have been derided by liberals and secularists as a waste of time and resources. But Joaquin and another National Artist for Literature, the late Alejandro Roces, defended the fiesta as an “accurate barometer of progress” and the engine for nation-building. Fiestas, after all, celebrate the milestones in a community. “With births, marriages and deaths recorded, Filipinos began to see themselves as historical beings,” Roces writes. “The town was the nation in embryo. This explains why the Filipino word of town, ‘bayan,’ is also the word for nation. The Filipino saw his nation as just an expansion of his hometown . . .” Similarly, Europe became Europe because of the ancient annual great pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela of Spain.

The examples of Calungsod and Lorenzo Ruiz should indicate that the “hometown” has grown to embrace as well the globe. Both of them earned the palm of martyrdom abroadâ€"the latter in Japan, the former in what’s now Guam. They may as well have been the first Filipino OFWs! And although they died with clerics (Calungsod with the Jesuit Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores, and Lorenzo with several Dominican friars), they were laymen, an indication of how Christianity had really taken root among the Filipinos. Their martyrdom having sown and watered the seed of Christianity elsewhere, they’re veritable ambassadors and embodiments of the catholicity of the Catholic faith. They’re the Philippine Church’s gifts to universal humanity. They make us proud to be Filipinos and Christians.

#48859
It is only right for the Visayas to finally have a canonized saint; after all, Christianity is older there than in Manila by nearly half a century. The head start was provided in 1521 when Humabon and his people welcomed Magellan and the Spaniards and underwent Christian baptism; his wife was re-christened after Queen Juana of Spain and received for a gift the image of the Holy Infant of Jesusâ€"the Santo Niño. What happened between the time the remnants of Magellan’s fleet left to return to Spain in what became the first circumnavigation of the globe and the time the Spaniards, led by Legazpi, came back to the Philippines in 1565 is what Nick Joaquin calls as “the most tantalizing period in Philippine history.” Upon the Spaniards’ return, they found the image of the Santo Niño in an altar among several anitos, perhaps the first recorded evidence of folk Catholicism.

Today the Santo Niño of Cebu, together with the Santo Rosario of Peñafrancia, La Naval de Manila and Manaoag shrines, is the biggest Catholic devotion in the Philippines. The fact that the devotion has spread from Cebu to Manila (witness the Santo Niño feasts every January in Tondo and Pandacan) should indicate the catholicity of popular Catholic liturgy and religious pilgrimage.

Inspiration & Hope / ‘San Pedro Calungsod’
November 07, 2011, 07:37:41 PM
Philippine Daily Inquirer Editorial
1:03 am | Friday, October 28th, 2011

Almost a dozen years after he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000, Blessed Pedro Calungsod is set to become the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. Through a unanimous vote, the cardinal-members of the Holy See’s Sacred Congregation for the Cause of Saints determined that the 2002 recovery of a woman, who had been clinically dead for two hours, was a miracle attributed to the intercession of Calungsod, to whom her doctor had reportedly prayed. Now, Beato (Blessed) Pedro Calungsod will soon be “San Pedro Calungsod.”

What’s the difference between a Blessed and a Saint? The Spanish Dominican historian Fr. Fidel Villarroel, the most prolific saint-maker in the Philippines who did the “positio” or historical legwork to have Lorenzo Ruiz canonized, explains that beatification is “a declaration of the Church that a dead person, judging from his or her heroic life, is proposed to Christians for local veneration or limited cult as a model of virtuous living and as an intercessor and advocate for them before God.” While a miracle is needed to be attributed to a person who died naturally and is proposed for beatification, no such miracle is needed for a martyr. Martyrdom automatically elects the martyr to the beatitude of heaven. Beatification is expected to lead to canonization, in which the cult of the blessed is widened so as to include the universal Church. Therefore canonization means a wider veneration for Calungsod.

Notwithstanding the prospects for a widerâ€"and more universalâ€"veneration for Calungsod, we should not miss out on the fact that he hailed from the local, from the Visayas, in fact, where three provinces and ethnic groups claim him as their ownâ€"Cebu, Bohol and Iloilo.

Since there are just four actors in the film, casting was crucial. How did you cast the four actors?

Since there are just four actors in the film, casting was crucial. The first to be cast was Jodie. She wanted to do it right away. Next was Kate. We got together and that was it. Then my agent, who happens to also represent Christoph, said, “This guy wants to see you.” I was locked up in house arrest or let’s call it “my sabbatical year.” I said, “Yes that will be very interesting if he comes to visit me.” That would be much more interesting than the chief of Bern police â€" who also came to have tea with me.

Christoph and I started talking about the play because I was working on the adaptation. The last one (to be cast) was John. It was a difficult role to cast. I had a very good casting director, Fiona Weir. She suggested John. I was really lucky to have four people not only of such great quality as actors but they also liked each other. That doesn’t happen every day.

Were you very specific in your instructions to the actors or did they adapt to you?

I gave them notes, told them what I wanted, but they very quickly understood the way everyone should be. I heard them say that I did not direct much but I didn’t need to. In one of my films, an actress thought that I didn’t like her. I can’t remember who it was. I did not give her any directions because she was perfect.

Was it Faye Dunaway?

No, no … oh my god.

Do you keep in touch with the actors in your previous films?

Those I have a good relationship with. I saw Adrien (Brody) a couple of weeks ago. He was in Paris after a long spell. I see Harrison (Ford) every time he comes. Jack Nicholson used to visit quite a lot. But I haven’t seen him for a good couple of years. I saw Mia (Farrow). But she now lives far from the madding crowd.

What do you miss about Hollywood?

In the beginning, there were certain things I missed. But nowadays … if you go to a studio here, you see technicians using the same methods and machinery. In Hollywood, there’s the connection with the people who finance the films because you lunch or dine with them, whereas here, you never see them. Other than that, I miss friends. I miss Nate ‘n Al Delicatessen.

What other films do you want to make?

I would like to do a period film of the pre-war times, on the psychology of aging. Plastic surgery, creams and pills â€" it has become a total craze. I’d like to do this but not in today’s era, because it will become a comedy. I’d like to set it in a period when you don’t have these tools. It will be about how one person, a woman, goes through the stages of life and deals with it. It’s something that I observe. There’s a total obsession with aging nowadays. --http://entertainment.inquirer.net/

Winner of a Golden Globe best director award for “Chinatown,” Polanski bantered, “I can tell you I will be really sorry, but I won’t be able to attend when you give me (a Golden Globe) for this (“Carnage”). So you better think of another candidate.”

You kept the film close to the play and you did not “open it up,” which worked.

When you adapt a play, you don’t do what they call “break it up” or “take it out.” It always looks phony when films adapted from plays suddenly take you for a couple of minutes to the street … I don’t understand why there’s such a fear of doing something in a confined space. To me, it’s very attractive.

There were some films like that in my youth, even in my childhood, that attracted me tremendously. They remain throughout in all my work like, for example, Laurence Olivier’s “Hamlet.” All of that film happens in that strange castle with corridors, stairs and terraces. It’s all in a confined space. When I did “Death and the Maiden,” I was trying to do the same but it was very difficult to not go at least a little bit out in the garden, etcetera.

Born in this city, Polanski has lived here in exile since 1978, when he fled the United States after being convicted for unlawful sex with a minor. In 2009, he was set to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival when Swiss police arrested him for extradition to the US. After months in prison and house arrest, the filmmaker avoided extradition. Now free to travel to Switzerland, Polanski received the award last September.

He referred to the time of his house arrest as “my sabbatical year.” It was during this period that Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actor Christoph Waltz visited him to discuss a role in “Carnage,” which the director was casting at the time.

Polanski eventually cast Waltz with Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and John C. Reilly in his adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s “God of Carnage,” winner of Olivier and Tony Awards, including best play.

Imagine the four talented actors playing two sets of well-heeled New York parents who meet for a polite discussion of their respective sons’ playground squabble.

Soon, verbal warfare erupts between the couples and between the spouses. It’s a biting, black comedy that exposes contradictions and prejudices while a signature purse, a mobile phone and flowers from a vase are tossed about amid the heated arguments.

“What attracted me to the play was mainly the fun that I had watching it,” Polanski said. “I see it as a kind of criticism or satire on conventional middle class values … its hypocrisy and smiles, niceties and political correctness.”

PARIS â€" At 78, Roman Polanski still has that boyish charm.

Arriving in a meeting room in Hotel Plaza Athenee, with a smile and bemused glimmer in his eyes, Roman â€" one of the greatest filmmakers of all time â€" said, “I always look young. I think it’s genetic. When I was 18, I looked 14. When I did my first film in Poland, ‘Knife in the Water,’ it was for 18 and older … they wouldn’t let me go see it.”

The director of “Chinatown,” “The Pianist,” “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Repulsion,” “The Tenant,” “Tess” and “The Ghost Writer” pointed out that he maintains a healthy lifestyle. “It doesn’t mean I don’t have a glass of wine in the evening,” he said. “I always did a lot of sports. I eat well so I think that helps. I never smoked … except cigars.”

General Topic / Most Valuable Degrees

And the most valuable college degree goes to...
By Chris Kyle

What makes a degree valuable?
-Career opportunities?
-Average entry-level compensation?
-Time to completion?
-Versatility?

Our answer is: all of the above.

With graduation season coming up, we've compiled our list of Most Valuable Degrees based on these criteria.

And without further ado...the Most Valuable Degree goes to...

Winner: Bachelor's Degree in Business
The most popular college degree in the world is also the best college degree and a superb pick for students looking for a versatile bachelor's degree with major earning potential.

Time to completion: 4 years
Average entry-level compensation: $41,100*
Average mid-career income: $70,600*

Winning factor: One of the advantages of a business degree is that you're able to move into many different industries. To name just two, health care is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy, and finance is one of the most stable.

2nd Place: Associate's Degree in Medical Assisting
The timing for earning an associate's degree in medical assisting couldn't be better. The suddenly red-hot career was highlighted in Laurence Shatkin's book Best Jobs for the 21st Century and was also named by Forbes as one of the fastest growing jobs for women in 2010.

Time to completion: 18 months to 2 years
Average entry-level compensation: $29,450*
Potential income: $39,970*

Winning factor: Medical assisting opportunities are expected to grow 34 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

3rd Place: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
Accounting is often overshadowed by the more popular business degree but the potential income figures are often higher for this more specialized degree.

Time to completion: 4 years
Average entry-level compensation: $46,500*
Average mid-career income: $77,500*

Winning factor: There's a lot of opportunity for those with an accounting degree. In a recent survey of more than 500 senior finance executives, more than half of the CFOs expressed concern about a lack of qualified accountants entering the workforce, according to global accounting organization Grant Thornton.

4th Place: Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies
It's hard to imagine a two-year degree with more upside than an associate's degree in paralegal studies. This extremely solid degree could allow you to work for a law firm or for yourself, in whatever city or town you want in America.

Time to completion: 2 years
Average entry-level compensation: $50,080*
Potential income: $75,700*

Winning factor: Opportunities for paralegals and legal assistants are expected to grow at a healthy 28 percent clip between 2008 and 2018, according to the Department of Labor.

5th Place: Bachelor's of Science in Nursing
Add security to the long list of reasons to pursue career as a nurse. A Vanderbilt University analysis in 2009 predicted that the U.S. will have a shortage of 260,000 nurses in 2025. Find a Nursing school near you.

Time to completion: 4 years
Average entry-level compensation: $52,700*
Average mid-career income: $68,200*

Winning factor: Employment opportunities are expected to soar 22 percent between 2008 and 2018, with hundreds of thousands of career openings expected from retirements, according to the Department of Labor.

*All starting income and mid-career income information comes from Payscale's 2010-2011 college salary report. Average income comes from the U.S. Department of Labor, using May 2009 median salary information, and potential income reflects earnings by the top ten percent. -- http://education.yahoo.net/

Weird and Extreme / Refusal of Blood Transfusions
November 06, 2011, 05:26:34 PM

A fundamental doctrine of the Jehovah’s Witnesses teaches that the Bible prohibits consumption, storage and transfusion of blood, including in cases of emergency. This doctrine was introduced in 1945, and has been elaborated upon since then. Although accepted by a majority of Jehovah’s Witnesses, evidence indicates a minority does not wholly endorse this doctrine. Facets of the doctrine have drawn praise and criticism from both members of the medical community and Jehovah’s Witnesses alike.

In 1964, Jehovah’s Witnesses were prohibited from obtaining transfusions for pets, from using fertilizer containing blood, and were even encouraged to write to dog food manufacturers to verify that their products were blood-free. Later that year, Jehovah’s Witnesses doctors and nurses were instructed to withhold blood transfusions from fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses. As to administering transfusions to non-members, The Watchtower stated that such a decision is “left to the Christian doctor’s own conscience.” -- http://listverse.com/
