I have a bottle of 'Lambanog'; and I can say that its been a popular 'taste' by my friends during our 'social get-to-gethers' haha!

Lambanog has that classy after taste like Cognac.
Its great with a nice Italian cigar.

Classy, very classy.

Either through poverty or not, its hard for me to believe that these people could go on living know that they killed or hurt a person for a couple of pesos and some jewelry. How they can go on living and not be affected by their conscience is something.

I feel so bad for that one individual who was shot in the chest.

Unbelievable.
#48014
News like this is sad, that such poverty would drive people to acts of violence. Buanga pood sila ngano mo mo rob man, they should just get a job, bahala ug gamay ra ang salary, so long as naa sila'y trabaho.

Kai lazy sila mo tulis ra.

Nonesense. It may be 'eye-sore' pero it is sustenance for some people of Bohol. Luuy lang pood ang tawo gi ingnan ra 'eye sore'. It's easy to discriminate on the poor because of their economic disposition, the authority members wouldn't say the same if they were in the situation of those selling the goods.

People go to Bohol to experience the beauty and the genuine Boholano people. Why create something artificial when in all reality there are poor people in Bohol, as well as there are well to do, rich etc.

Let the tourists see the real Bohol. The Bohol that they have learned to love and appreciate.

Bran Lorenzo

Lyrics:

Oh where oh were could my baby be
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good
So I can see my baby when I'll leave this world

We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road
Straight ahead
A car was stalled the engine was dead
I couldn't stop
So I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screamin tires
The busting glass
The Painfull scream that I heard last.

Oh where oh were could my baby be
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good
So I can see my baby when I'll leave this world

When I woke up
The rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Something warm falling into my eyes
But some how I found my baby that night
I lifted her head
she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just alittle while
I held her close
I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love I knew I had missed
but now she's gone
even though I hold her tight
I lost my love, my life that night

Oh where oh were could my baby be
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world

ooooooooooooooooo
oooooo oooooooooo

A tiny Alaska village eroding into the Arctic Ocean sued two dozen oil, power and coal companies Tuesday, claiming that the large amounts of greenhouse gases they emit contribute to global warming that threatens the community's existence.

The city of Kivalina and a federally recognized tribe, the Alaska Native village of Kivalina, sued Exxon Mobil Corporation, eight other oil companies, 14 power companies and one coal company in a lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco.

Kivalina is a traditional Inupiat Eskimo village of about 390 people about 625 miles northwest of Anchorage. It's built on an 8-mile barrier reef between the Chukchi Sea and Kivalina River.

Sea ice traditionally protected the community, whose economy is based in part on salmon fishing plus subsistence hunting of whale, seal, walrus, and caribou. But sea ice that forms later and melts sooner because of higher temperatures has left the community unprotected from fall and winter storm waves and surges that lash coastal communities.

"We are seeing accelerated erosion because of the loss of sea ice," City Administrator Janet Mitchell said in a statement. "We normally have ice starting in October, but now we have open water even into December so our island is not protected from the storms."

Relocation costs have been estimated at $400 million or more.

A spokesman for Exxon Mobil, Gantt Walton, said the company was reviewing the lawsuit and had no immediate comment on it.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Kivalina by two nonprofit legal organizations -- The Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment and the Native American Rights Fund -- plus six law firms.

Reached by phone in Boston, attorney Matt Pawa said other lawsuits have been filed seeking damages from global warming, but this is the first one that has a "discretely identifiable victim."

Damage to Kivalina from global warming has been documented in official government reports by the Army Corps of Engineers and the General Accounting Office, Pawa said.

The lawsuit invokes the federal common law of public nuisance, and every entity that contributes to the pollution problem harming Kivalina is liable, Pawa said. "You can sue them one at a time or some subset of them," he said.

The lawsuit also accuses some of the defendants of a conspiracy to mislead the public regarding the causes and consequences of global warming. The suit was filed in California because that's where many of the defendants are located or do business, Pawa said.

Without commenting on the lawsuit, Exxon Mobil's Walton said the company takes the issue of climate change seriously.

"Exxon Mobil is taking action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our operations, supporting research into technology breakthroughs and participating in constructive dialogues on policy options with NGOs, industry and policy makers," he said.

The other oil companies named were BP PLC, BP American, BP Products North America, Chevron, Chevron USA, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Shell Oil.

Also named were Peabody Energy, a major coal producer, and power companies AES, American Electric Power, American Electric Power Services, DTE Energy, Duke Energy, Dynegy Holdings, Edison International, MidAmerican Energy Holdings, Mirant Corp., NRG Energy, Pinnacle West Capital, Reliant Energy, The Southern Co. and Xcel Energy.

At least three Israeli missiles hit the Palestinian Interior Ministry in Gaza early Thursday, hours after Palestinian militants fired more than 40 Qassam rockets into southern Israel.

One of those rockets struck near a college, killing one person, according to the Israeli military and emergency medical services. The Palestinian rockets are a near daily occurrence but have only occasionally injured or killed people.

The strike at the ministry injured several people, according to Palestinian sources. Another rocket hit the building several minutes later, the sources said. A six-month-old child was struck by shrapnel and killed, the sources said.

The ministry strike was part of a series of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza in retaliation for the rocket attack. They included one outside Gaza City that killed two children, Palestinian medical sources said.

The Israeli military confirmed eight airstrikes in Gaza. The targets were rocket manufacturing and launching sites and a headquarters building, the Israelis said. Palestinian sources said two militants were killed.

The continuing violence came as an opinion poll in a leading Israeli paper suggested most Israelis think their government should negotiate with Hamas -- the militants in control of Gaza -- for a cease-fire and the release of a captured soldier.

The poll, conducted by the newspaper Haaretz and the polling company Dialog, found 64 percent of Israelis in favor of talks.

"It now appears that this opinion is gaining traction in the wider public, which until recently vehemently rejected such negotiations," according to the newspaper.

"According to the findings, Israelis are fed up with seven years of Qassam rockets falling on Sderot and the communities near Gaza, as well as the fact that [Gilad] Shalit has been held captive for more than a year and a half," the newspaper said.

Shalit was 19 when he was captured June 25, 2006, by Palestinian militants who tunneled into Israel and attacked an army outpost near the Gaza-Israel-Egypt border.

Apart from the one death and one injury Wednesday by Palestinian rockets that hit Sapir College, near Sderot, no other injuries were reported from the rockets.

Another Israeli airstrike -- targeting a rocket cell in northern Gaza -- killed one civilian and injured three others just outside Jebalya, Palestinian medical and security sources said.

Five Hamas members were killed in an earlier airstrike in Gaza, the sources said.

The Israeli military confirmed it carried out the airstrikes in northern Gaza, but offered no details.

Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert resisted pressure to launch a broader military operation against Palestinian militants in Gaza after a rocket attack seriously wounded an 8-year-old boy in Sderot. The boy's leg was amputated.

Instead, Israel retaliated with troops carrying out airstrikes in Gaza against Hamas targets.

Olmert has vowed not to "slacken" against the ongoing attacks on Israel, which he described as an "almost daily war."

"We will continue to struggle in order to reduce to nil the threat that is upsetting the quality of life of residents of the south," he said.

As part of that struggle, Olmert said, Israel will continue its military operations and its blockade of "materials that could serve the terrorist organizations, including energy."

Israel has allowed some fuel and medical supplies into Gaza, but has kept the border crossings closed except to meet emergency humanitarian needs. The block on food, fuel and medicine has led to long lines at stores and left hospitals without heat.

Human rights groups have protested against the blockade, accusing Israel of collectively punishing civilians along with the territory's Hamas leadership.

On Monday, thousands of people formed a human chain along Gaza's roads in a Hamas-led protest over the blockade. Hamas does not recognize Israel's right to exist, and Israel and the United States consider it a terrorist organization.

"This may not always be loved but it is an important part of counterterrorist activity," Olmert said.

He also said the Israeli government is building 13 new schools in Sderot and surrounding areas that will be reinforced to protect them from the salvo of rockets.

It is part of a $14 million plan approved by the Knesset in January.

The poll figures were obtained in a Haaretz-Dialog poll conducted Tuesday under the supervision of Professor Camil Fuchs of Tel Aviv University.

A Spanish court Wednesday convicted 20 men, mainly Algerians and Moroccans, of Islamic terrorist activity, but none was found guilty of the more serious charge of an alleged plot to destroy Madrid's anti-terrorism courthouse with a truck bomb, according to a copy of the sentence viewed by CNN.

Those convicted were part of a group of 30 defendants who went on trial last October. The three-judge panel hearing the case -- in the very courthouse that prosecutors alleged was the target of the truck bomb -- began their deliberations for a verdict after the trial concluded on Jan. 14.

Eighteen of the defendants were convicted of belonging to a terrorist group and two others were convicted of collaborating with a terrorist group. In addition, two of the men were found guilty of an additional charge of document forgery, the sentence said. Their sentences range from seven to 14 years.

But the court found "non-existent the crime of conspiracy to commit a deadly terrorist attack," the sentence said.

The sentence noted that Moroccan defendant Abderrahmane Tahiri, alias Mohamed Achraf, age 34, had "conceived of the idea of executing a terrorist attack with an explosives-laden vehicle against the National Court, as an emblem of the fight against terrorism."

But the court said this did not constitute conspiracy under Spanish law because it was no more than an "undeveloped individual plan" by Tahiri.

"The conception of a possible terrorist objective does not constitute the existence of conspiracy, but is an activity that is part of belonging to a terrorist group," the sentence said.

Tahiri got the maximum sentence handed down, 14 years, as leader of the terrorist group, the sentence said.

The 20 men convicted had created Jihadi terror cells in prison -- where many of them were already serving time for other crimes before their arrests in this case -- to recruit other prisoners for terrorism, according to court sources.

The remaining 10, mainly Algerians, were acquitted of all charges. Nine of them were acquitted of membership in a terrorist group, and one was acquitted for collaboration with a terrorist group, the sentence said.

The prosecution argued that that alleged truck bomb plot aimed to kill hundreds of judges, prosecutors, support staff and police officers who work daily at the National Court, and also to destroy files against other Islamic terrorist suspects, including those linked to the Madrid train bombings.

Prosecutors based their case on testimony and documentation provided by a Moroccan man operating as a police informant, and on wiretaps and intercepted correspondence between some of the suspects, according to a court document and a court source.

Most of the defendants were arrested in October 2004, about six months after the March 11, 2004 Madrid train bombings that killed 191 people and wounded 1,800 others.

All of the defendants insisted on their innocence at arraignments and other pre-trial hearings.

At the time of the arrests, an attack on the courthouse "would have been easy," a court source said. There are streets on three sides of the courthouse, and a main street runs next to the building.

The courthouse has since increased security, installing thick metal barriers to block traffic on the side and back of the building

I have a classmate in my History class who is an exchange student from Beijing China, a 4th year student from Beijing University and he has become quite a good friend this past semester. When I started History of Knights and Concubines this early semester (mid January), I didnt even know the guy and he came up to me and asked if I was 'Fei Lu Pen Guo-Ren'. He and his family have been to Palawaan and toured Manila back in 2005. It was very interesting how he knew so much about Filipino history and it made me smile how the Chinese are interested about Filipino culture and our history.

He even knew about Rizal :)

We're close friends in class and he has been trying to get me to visit Beijing and Hubei this summer.

Valencia - Bohol / Hydrogeology
February 28, 2008, 12:30:14 PM
Hydrogeological interpretation is based on the inventory of well records from Bohol collected during water sources survey in 1998 and information on geological formations from geologic maps and related literature. The municipality of Valencia is covered by four (4) sedimentary rock formations namely, Carmen Formation, Sierra Bullones Limestone, Maribojoc Limestone and Quaternary Alluvium.

Sierra Bullones Limestone, which caps the mountain range in southeastern part of Bohol, has the largest outcrop area at 58.04 sq. km. or 44.85% of municipal area. This unit is massive, cavernous, fossiliferous and marly in places. Becuase of its location in the mountains and high elevation, this formation does not have groundwater development potential. However, due to high permeability, infiltrated water is drained toward lower areas where it would resurface in form of springs. Carmen formation, which has a large extent over the municipality (49.24 sq. km. or 38.05% of the municipality), is not considered potential source of pumpable groundwater because of widespread occurrence of shale, sandstone, siltstone and marl of low permeability.

Maribojoc Limestone covers 17.93 sq. km. or 13.86% of the municipal area. The limestone is highly coralline, bedded to massive, soft, chalky, non-compact and marly. Limestone exhibits numberous sinkholes, caves and caverns, which are product of chemical weathering of carbonate rocks, characteristic for karstified terrain. Consequently, run-off occurs only during intensive rainfall, otherwise most of the effective rainfall infiltrates into underground. This formation has a good potential for ground water development due to its very high permeability. When marls and clay layers are intercalated within Maribojoc limestone, springs and artesian conditions occur. A small portion of 4.19 sq. km. or 3.24% of the municipal area along the coast is covered by Quaternary Alluvium, consisting of mud, clay, silt, sand gravel and coral and cell deposit along shore, swampy areas and beaches. Usually, this formation has a good groundwater potential however, its very limited outcrop and area does not hold any significant groundwater potential for the municipality.

Valencia - Bohol / Rivers and Basins of Valencia
February 28, 2008, 12:29:40 PM
Network of small rivers and creeks traverse the southern portion of the municipality, discharging the groundwater and surface run-off generated within Panangatan and Cutcutan River Basin (RB), into the Mindanao Sea. Bilar River drains a large area of the northern part of municipality. This river, which has headwaters in the steep terrain north of Valencia municipality, flows toward Dimiao municipality in southwest, where it changes course abruptly toward north and flows toward Loboc River main course, located further in the west. Tributaties of Manaba River, which has its delta at neighboring Garcia-Hernandez municipality, are draining a small area in the east.

The municipality is located within six (6) major river basins. Panangatan and Loboc RB cover the largest area of the western part, with 41.76 and 38.66 sq. km. (32% and 30% of the municipal area), respectively. Cutcutan RB covers 30.77 sq. km. (23.8%) of the southern part, while Panamnam and Inabanga RB have smaller coverage in the northern and wester portion, at 1.57 sq. km. and 3.49 sq. km. respectively.

The southern portion of the municipality has a developed drainage system, as evidenced by a number of rivers and creeks, indicating that most of the rainfall in this part of municipality are discharged as surface runoff. In Loboc RB, which covers the northern portion, the river network is poorly developed. Since this area is mostly covered by Maribojoc and partly by Sierra Bullones limestone, a great deal of run-off can be converted into groundwater recharge, because limestone is very porous and permeable due to its well-developed karstic features. Surface water run-off (estimated to 696 mm/year per sq. km.) within the municipality, is estimated to 246,883 cu. m./day of the municipality.

Valencia - Bohol / Physiography of Valencia
February 28, 2008, 12:29:00 PM

Valencia municipality covers an area of 129.4 sq. kilometers or 3.43% of Bohol’s total mainland area. It is composed of thirty-five (35) barangays, from which 8 are located along the coast and 27 barangays are located inland.

The municipality of Valencia is generally characterized by hilly to mountainous terrain. The area in the northeast and extending towards south has very steep terrain (slope>50%) with ground elevations up to 727 m. average mean sea level (amsl). The northwest portion has undulating to rolling terrain (slope 8-18%), with ground elevation ranging from 400 to 524 m. amsl in the eastern part. Very small densely populated areas along the coast in the east represent the level to nearly level terrain with 0-3% slope. The soil covers consist of different sorts of clay and clay loam, namely, Ubay clay loam, Batuan clay loam, Calape clay loam and Faraon clay. Faraon clay has the largest areal coverage within the municipality. The vegetative cover consists of grass lands, coconut, forest, paddy rice and built-up area. The coastal area is covered mostly by coconut tree, with a small built-up area in the central coast. Grassland covers the largets area in the central portion, while the northern part is covered with forest in the upland and irrigated and non-irrigated rice paddies of very limited extent in the lowland.

The whole Bohol is in the Corona’s climate type IV, characterized by evenly distributed rainfall over the year. The average annual rainfall is estimated to about 2,019 millimeters. The average annual rainfall is a sum of the average annual rainfall from respective river basin, multiplied with percentage of respective municipal area within respective river basin.

The average rainfall, which is higher than in other areas, reflecting overall higher elevation of terrain in Valencia municipality.

Valencia - Bohol / The History of Valencia, Bohol
February 28, 2008, 12:26:12 PM
Ang Historidad sa atong Municipalidad

Valencia is on the southern coast of Bohol. It is forty-two kilomerters from the capital City of Tagbilaran Its former name is said to be Panangatan, which is derived from sang-at, meaning to put up on an elevated place. It is said that many, many years ago, on windy days, fishermen from Dimiao and Lila used to seed shelter at the mouth of the Panangatan River when the southwest moonsoon was very strong. Here they would put up (sang-at) their boats on the banks of the river where nipa palms grew, in order to prevent them from being washed away by the waves. When the Spaniards came, Panagatan was still a part of Dimiao. It was separated in 1867, the year a Spanish priest was assigned to the municipality. The priest gave it the new name, after that of a seaport city in Spain.

The governadorcillo or capitan municipal was elected by the members of the principalia of the town, which was composed of the officials of the town, the ex-officials, and the ex-cabezas de barangay. The election was presided over by the priest, who wielded a strong influence on the results of the election. In 1879 Valencia had a population of 7,099. During the Pilippine-American War, the people joined the resistance movement. At the point called Punta Gorda or Balitbiton, which is between Valencia and Garcia-Hernandez, the Filipino soldiers used to waylay the Americans and then attack them with big rocks. During the early months of 1942, many people from Mindanao and Cebu evacuated to Valencia. In spite of the increased population, there was no shortage of food because the people carried on an intensive food production campaign. They produced rice, corn, camotes and gabi. Many from Alburquerque and Baclayon came, drawn by the abundance of foodstuffs.

Towards the end of the war, that is, in August, 1944, a Japanese sergeant was ambushed and killed in Dimiao by guerrillas from Valencia. In retaliation, about twenty members of the Valencia bolo battalion were killed by the Japanese for refusing to reveal the whereabouts of the guerrillas. The Japanese committed cruelties against the Filipinos. People lost much property such as carabaos, pigs, chickens, horses, rice, jewelry, money and clothing.

The principal industries of the people today are weaving, pot making, and fishing. The most important products are coconuts, rice, corn and fish. It is in this town that the Badiang Health Resort is foundâ€"a popular resort which attracts excursionists and foreign visitors. For the education of the children there are elementary shcools in the poblacion and in the barrios. For their secondary education, students may go to the Valencia High School, a public school. Valencia remains one of the most wealthiest and well-to-do municipalities in Bohol.

Home Depot Scam
Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping.
Here's how the scam works:
Two seriously good-looking 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look.
When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say "No" and instead ask you for a ride to another Home Depot. You agree and they get in the backseat. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet.
I had my wallet stolen September 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, & 24th 29th. Also October 1st, 4th, twice on the 8th, 16t h, 23rd, 26th, 30th, three times last Saturday and very likely again this upcoming weekend.
So tell your friends to be careful.

P.S. Target has wallets on sale for $2.99.

Lol, this isn't a scam. This is volunteering :D

Greece is in my top lists to visit as well. My sister told me that when you land in Athens, you have this feeling of 'Ancient'-esque. Everything is old, there are churches kono in Athens that people go to on regular basis on Sunday, and those churches are over 1000 years old. Or at least a couple centuries old.

According to the Bible, God creates some things directly (like light, the earth and seas, the sun and moon). But, God commanded the earth and seas to bring forth the all that lives.

Furthermore, 1:21 clearly states that "every living creature that moveth" was brought forth FROM THE WATERS. Obviously, that means they were not always on the land, but came to be on the land.

If you believe in the Bible, there is a great deal there that supports evolution, and absolutely nothing there that contradicts the theory of evolution.

Some excerpts that I found:

1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

1:22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

1:23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Both...God created all the animal species and then He ordered them to evolved in order to survive.

Genesis 9:7 according to King James Bible
And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

Mutation. It is the key to our evolution. It is how we have evolved from a single-cell organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few millennia evolution leaps forward.
(Dr. Jean Grey)

Excellent example. God works through nature, he works through the natural world, as he himself breathed life into everything.

I find rather strong parallels between the Creationism in biblical scripture with creation in astrophysics.

I recommend taking a class on thermodynamics and biophysics. It binds religion and science together.

I have read tons of "climate crisis" material, and some facts mentioned in this movie are thought-provoking, such as: - how much percentage of CO2 are humans actually emitting, versus volcanic activity and other forms of life (plants, plancton etc)? - what is the correlation between temperature and solar activity?

Yet the documentary is in denial about irrefutable facts: the average world temperature IS rising rapidly, humans are altering in a dramatic way the planet, ice caps are rapidly melting, more humidity in the atmosphere creates even more global warming, deforestation adds more to the disaster etc and most of these factors show a positive loop effect! It's a fact that some ecologist groups are a lobby, that Africa would surely benefit from industrialization, but that should not stop us from a scientific investigation of facts. CO2 contributes from 10 to 25% of greenhouse effect, and CO2 has increased 30% in the last century. The major contributor to greenhouse if water vapor, which is also increasing because of higher temperatures. This spells hard times for humanity. Denial won't help. Saying "we should not do anything until we have a mathematic evidence" is like saying "we should wait until the patient dies before we do a serious investigation about his problem".

A blatant lie is told about polar bears adapting to climate change: population of polar bears has already diminished by 30% in the last few years; 25% of Arctic ice has already melted, how can they adapt to a rapidly dwindling territory.

I totally agree that we all need to think about the natural resources that we use.  In my personal life I try to recycle as much as I can.  My argument ( and yes I live in the US) is that yes the US can do a lot of things to reduce its overall use of natural resources.  But to try and make the US to be Denmark, it just is not gonna happen!  That goes for India, China and the Russia too!  The population of and size of Denmark is smaller than probably those of at least 50 individual cities in the US (I do not know that for a fact, but I do not I am that far oof-- sorry Denmark).  Lets look at some human related issues.  When there is a tsunami in Asia, earthquake in South America, AIDs in Africa, how much does Denmark send to help compared to the US?  If we are all going to be like Denmark, maybe when there is a Tsunami disaster in Asia, we should all send them a windmill or two.

KnowNothing,

The United States can start this change by implementing changes that can help in alleviating the problem of status quo. Within the Northwestern Region of the United States as well as in the coastal zones of California, Washington and parts of the Eastern coasts of the United States, there is a rich potential in placing wind turbines, for example there have been construction of wind turbines in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as well as parts of Northwestern Pennsylvania, (which powers 30% of my college, Allegheny College). The United States, with its given geographical location and proximity of the wind current, can adequately generate power through wind turbines, which would decrease our dependence on non-renewable natural resources such as natural gas. If we provide say 40 billion megawatts of energy through wind turbines that would be used for commercial and industrial use, then that would mean an inverse reduction of 40 billion megawatts of energy that would have been taken from natural gas. Considering the massive energy consumption rates of the United States, every change that can alleviate this dependence is good. Considering that most of the natural resources that the United States acquires are foreign based, an introduction of home-grown energy fuel would be a positive implementation to the local economy and reduce the dependency of this nation, to a degree, from foreign powers' resources. The case study of Denmark shows that the country was able to generate over 3,129 MW capacitors, which provide 1/5th of all the energy in the country. Another country that is making positive implementations to reduce their dependence on non-renewable resource is Germany. Germany is the leading producer of wind power, with 28% of the total world capacity in 2006 and a total output of 38.5 TWh in 2007 (6.3% of German electricity); the official target is for renewable energy to meet 12.5% of German electricity needs by 2010 â€" this target may be reached ahead of schedule. Germany has 18,600 wind turbines, mostly in the north of the country â€" including three of the biggest in the world. In 2005, the government of Spain approved a new national goal for installed wind power capacity of 20,000 MW in 2010. With installation of 3515 MW in 2007 (for a total figure of 15,145 MW), this target will probably be reached ahead of schedule. A significant acceleration of the bureaucratic proceedings and connections to grid, and the legislative change occurred during 2007 (with Royal Decree 661/2007), have accelerated the developing of many wind parks, so that they could still run under the previous more favourable conditions.

Even the United States itself is also invigorating its own wind-turbine industry; U.S. wind power capacity grew by 45% to 16.8 gigawatts in 2007. The average output of one megawatt of wind power is equivalent to the average electricity consumption of about 250 American households. According to the American Wind Energy Association, wind will generate enough electricity in 2008 to power just over 1% (4.5 million households) of total electricity in U.S., up from less than 0.1% in 1999. U.S. Department of Energy studies have concluded wind harvested in just three of the fifty U.S. states could provide enough electricity to power the entire nation, and that offshore wind farms could do the same job. There has indeed been positive changes, and I applaud this changing shift towards wind energy, however we need more. This country has the capacity, to generate 30 fold more energy than what it does now. There is always room for modification, :) Contrary to your opinion, the United States is moving towards a greater emphasis on renewable resources.

QuoteThat goes for India, China and the Russia too!

Actually, that is not true. The Indian and Chinese governments are large proponents of wind energy resources. It is pivotal for these nations, as China and India are modernizing and industrializing in double digit numbers, energy is key to maintain their march to modernization. These nations spend billions of dollars to maintain importation of natural gas, petroleum, however, recently their governments have seen the positive gains in investing in wind power.
Doing so will not only decrease foreign dependence on resources, but will also tap into the local resource and provide jobs. Remember, Denmark alone employs over 20,000 of its citizens to run its turbine-industry. Imagine the benefits if large nations such as CHina, India and the United States taps into this in larger volume.

India ranks 4th in the world with a total wind power capacity of 6,270 MW in 2006, or 3% of all electricity produced in India. The World Wind Energy Conference in New Delhi in November 2006 has given additional impetus to the Indian wind industry. The windfarm near Muppandal, Tamil Nadu, India, provides an impoverished village with energy. India-based Suzlon Energy is one of the world's largest wind turbine manufacturers.
Heres a link: http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/partner/story?id=45465

As for China, in 2005, China announced it would build a 1000-megawatt wind farm in Hebei for completion in 2020. China reportedly has set a generating target of 20,000 MW by 2020 from renewable energy sources â€" it says indigenous wind power could generate up to 253,000 MW. Following the World Wind Energy Conference in November 2004, organised by the Chinese and the World Wind Energy Association, a Chinese renewable energy law was adopted. In late 2005, the Chinese government increased the official wind energy target for the year 2020 from 20 GW to 30 GW.
Heres a link: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6V2W-4NC5T5N-1&_user=642064&_coverDate=03%2F28%2F2007&_rdoc=7&_fmt=summary&_orig=browse&_srch=doc-info(%23toc%235713%239999%23999999999%2399999%23FLA%23display%23Articles)&_cdi=5713&_sort=d&_docanchor=&view=c&_ct=83&_acct=C000034558&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=642064&md5=ea3806a5e05a7c0146a34eb06e8aa142

QuoteWhen there is a tsunami in Asia, earthquake in South America, AIDs in Africa, how much does Denmark send to help compared to the US?  If we are all going to be like Denmark, maybe when there is a Tsunami disaster in Asia, we should all send them a windmill or two.

This is besides the point. We are discussing wind turbine energy to reduce dependency, not humanitarian aid. These mechanisms you mentioned has nothing to do in reducing green house gases nor reducing dependency on non-renewable resources. This is material for a totally different topic and is outside the sphere of the subject matter.

QuoteThe population of and size of Denmark is smaller than probably those of at least 50 individual cities in the US

And your point is?

Denmark, a nation of 5.4 million people can successfully install 3,100+ MW capacity. Around 90% of the national output is exported, and Danish companies accounted for 38% of the world turbine market in 2003, when the industry employed some 20,000 people and had a turnover of around 3 billion euro. That is a giant progressive leap and success for such a small nation. The success of Denmark's industry has been so manifested that their government has adopted  a target of cutting carbon emissions by 22% from 1988 levels by 2005. Impeccable!

If a small nation such as Denmark can do this, a Giant like the United States with a massive economic budget and man power, can easily do its part, per se not as large as Denmark, but nonetheless increase standard operational limits.

Why Should the United States invest in non-renewable energy?

A: Economical, strategic, environmentally friendly

Just some realities we all need to digest:
(taken from: http://wilcoxen.cp.maxwell.syr.edu/pages/804.html)

Growth Rates

Between 1973 and 2002, total energy consumption grew at an average annual rate of 0.9%. Growth was slow during the first half of the period and has been more rapid recently: the annual average growth between 1987 and 2002 was 1.4%. Average annual rates of growth by end use are shown below for the two periods.

End Use    1973-2002    1987-2002
Residential    1.2%    1.7%
Commercial    2.1%    2.5%
Industrial    0.0%    0.7%
Transportation    1.2%    1.4%

Prices Matter

An important lesson from history is that energy prices matter a lot. Before 1973, US energy consumption appeared to be growing exponentially at a rate of 3.2% per year. An exponential growth curve fit the data superbly well: in statistical terms, the R2 was 0.976 and the standard error of the estimated growth rate was 0.1%. Together those statistics imply that energy growth should have been between 3% and 3.4% for many years to come. However, that turned out to be very, very wrong. The graph below compares the exponential forecast (based on data from 1947-1973) with what actually happened. The exponential model predicted 88 quads more energy consumption in 2003 than there actually was, an error of 89% (186 quads predicted vs. 98 quads of actual consumption).

Dependency Trends:

US energy consumption, by source, 1850-2000. Vertical axis is in quadrillion BTU

U.S. Energy Flow - 2002. Note that the breakdown of useful and waste energy in each sector (yellow vs. grey) is estimated arbitrarily and is not based on data.

The breakdown of energy consumption by source is given here:

Fuel type    2004 US consumption in TW   2004 World consumption in TW
Oil    1.34    5.6
Gas    0.77    3.5
Coal    0.77    3.8
Hydroelectric    0.09    0.9
Nuclear    0.27    0.9
Geothermal, wind,
solar, wood    0.11    0.13
Total    3.35    15

I agree with you Lorenzo. However, people who may be or may not be aware of the global warming situation are not making any move to counter it. They just sit about and look at the earth eventually going down to pieces. We can only count the people who actually do something about the situation and that is not enough. The Earth maybe small they say, but it is too big for only a handful of concerned and proactive people. I bet, if all six billion plus people in the world had the same level, or at least have some level of concern and action, then the Earth would be a little better. But sadly that is not the case.

I share in your concern about the glooming situation, Reign Beau, that is why it is crucial that there is a clamor and research activity in the scientific/academic world. The more publications, the more tests, the more interaction researchers have with lobbyists in government, the more we can get this across. I applaud the works of Al Gore because it placed the Global Warming situation in the front burner, where it was heard by the mass media, by the people. For years, industrialists and capitalist interest groups have countered the talks of Global Warming. It is good that such discourse is occurring, and together, with researchers, and the public can make proper decisions to solve this crisis.

We must remain hopeful, kai it is not productive to be always pessimistic. I have faith in the human species, I pray History proves this so.

Yours,

I miss being the pack leader in our war games. I used to organize the kids in the street where I used to live in Tagbilaran, we used to organize into war parties, armed with sticks and water guns, lol. We would organize two teams, one team who would hold a fortification we would build (located around the kamalig, lol). A group of 4 to 6 defense guards would protect the fort, and another group (substantially greater) would storm the defense fortification. I loved leading the war party in invading the stronghold. We would play deep into the night until our yayas would call us home :P

CO2, NO2,NO3 or whatever...

the world itself is too populated, would you agree??

the law of supply and demand, know what i mean?

bottom line there's too much going on with our planet whether you inhale/exhale gas, fart or whatever...

just too much people now on earth that causes this what they called the Global Warming...

whether it is Global Warming or not, WE are now destroying our planet EARTH...

WE...

That is just the problem. There are too many humans. Over 6 billion and growing.

Humans species is unnatural in a way, we have completely checked any natural predators that would have checked our population. Even natural 'checks' such as diseases and plagues, are being defeated by medical advancements. It almost relates to the Malthusian Theory where natural resource abundance is constant and human population is growing asymmetrically that it would someday surmount over the resource population. I took a class that focused on this, loved it, but any ways back to the subject, human population growth is a violation of natural law. In biology, the theory asserts that the reproductive potential of virtually any organism or species greatly exceeds the earth's capacity to support all its possible offspring. Consequently, species diversity is preserved through mechanisms that keep population sizes in check, such as predation. These mechanisms are typhoons, hurricanes, plagues, drought, infertility.

Man has already defeated most of these mechanisms, or has developed instruments to reduce the damage effects of said mechanisms. Thereby precluding a maintenance of the positive linear population growth over any loss of life.

Interesting eh?

I really applaud the Scandinavian people for their environment-oriented policies.

They are truly a people to model after.

This is unbelievable. This shows to us that a major problem is a lack of medical clinics in the rural areas; where most of the cases manifest.

I hope that the new Governor takes this into consideration.

Dengue is all but wiped out in the west. I pray that it too will be so in Bohol.

Like yourself, I am in support of a greater care of our limited non-renewable resources; on that note, like many of my colleagues, I want a greater fuel-efficient program to reduce the burden of our consumption of non-renewable products such as coal, natural gas, petroleum. I applaud nation states in Europe such as Denmark, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands for utilizing renewable energy power such as solar power, wind turbines. A great model is Denmark, a nation which derives 20% of its entire energy source from wind turbines. Additionally, The wind industry is a very important business in Denmark, with wind manufacturing activity bringing about 3 billion Euro into the Danish economy and employing 20,000 people.

Wind power is also important in Denmark because it is a green, clean and renewable energy. Scandinavians are known for their advanced environmental policies, and wind power has given the Danes a way to reduce their dependency on polluting fuels: 20% of Denmark’s electricity consumption is covered by clean electricity produced at Danish wind farms. At times, wind power supply is able to cover the total electricity consumption of the whole west of Denmark.

The United States, the world's leading consumer of all kinds of non-renewable resources ranging from natural gas, petroleum, coal etc can benefit from adopting similar policies. In the northwestern region of the United States, particularly in Minnesota, North/South Dakota, there is a rich possibility of placing thousands of wind turbines to generate double of not triple the energy Denmark generates in wind turbines. This form of energy can aid in alleviating the US's dependence on non-renewable resources such as natural gas, which is consumed in the billions of barrels per year.

There are so much possibilities for improvement, for alleviating the process of global warming. The more we invest in pure-form energy such as hydrogen fuel cells, nuclear power, wind power and solar power means there will be an inverse decreasein dependence on non-renewable energy sources that are responsible for the CO2, NO2, NO3 and other dimunitive green house gases that are responsible for the degradation of the stratosphere.

I remain hopeful. I refuse to believe that the human species will allow this transgression to continue. I pray History proves our generation wise enough to implement such changes. Humans are part of the environment, as animals, we evolved from it, and asthe apex life form in the continuum of God's green earth, we must take up the role of steward in protecting our domain. Our Earth.

Cheers,

One of the problems that I have with some governments, the United States government under the Bush Administration, for example, the Chinese and Indian governments is their refusal to sign the Kyoto Agreement, which would place a restriction on industrial effluents.

It is appalling to me, that the United States would refuse such an initiative, when other major players of the world have endorsed it or are asking the United States to sign the initiative.

All I was trying to say, KnowNothing, is that politicians have a role, a pivotal one in particular, in regulating Global Warming.

Additionally, my research is still on going, it will be reviewed by a board by the end of March, and it focuses primarily on the history of Industrialization, it provides a case study to human effects on limnoaquatic sites, as well as on the overall environment. Primarily focusing on changes of %Carbon vs % Nitrogen vs % Sulfur on core analysis. Additional to that, is the examining of key coal-related metals such as Cadmium, zinc, lead, mercury and arsenic--in tracing that presence from the early 19th century to the present vis-a-vis core stratification. Under CNS analysis and AAS (atomic absorption spectrometer).

My research provides a historical reference to the global warming phenomena and its inter-related nature to Human Industry, past and the present.

No you do not need anybody to tell you what is happening!  Anybody can personally believe what they want to believe including that the earth is flat.  The problem becomes when people start spouting ideas and scientifically unfounded hypotheses that are bound to change local, national and international policies that will divert billions and trillions of dollars to fruitless courses.  I am not against global warming per se.  I am against self centered proclamations, having no scientific basis, closed as science.

Your reasoning is extremely closed minded, and perhaps you do not have an understanding in the scientific field. What you call 'fruitless' is considered the benefit of the human species. Science developed from new ideas, when molecular biologists Watson and Crick mapped the anti-parallel structure of the DNA genome, they were still 'unpublished' and their 'opinions' were considered 'unproven' by many colleagues of their day, until they proved it through research. And now, in the present, we are revelling in their discovery, the molecular understanding of the DNA Polymerases, the initiation complex of eukaryotes, prokaryotes, the elongation reactions, the release factors, the effect factors etc etc. All of science and their postulates and laws were once 'unproven hypothesis' that took years and discourse to prove its unassailable nature.

Your defense against blind and stubborn self idealism is wrong and flawed in the first place. You make example of people who believe in the earth being flat, and are trying to make this a personal case; a case related to the right of free speech. It is ironic how you tell me that it is not up to the politicians to dictate global warming, but you yourself utilize a political-related right to believe in anything you want.

No sir, this is not an issue of free speech and the right to believe in fantasies.

We're dealing with concrete discourse and proofs that is thundered by the discourse within the scientific community, that I am but a single component and part of.
