Most of these plants are small and tend to trap only insects, but some larger species, such as Nepenthes Rafflesiana and Nepenthes Rajah, have been documented to catch small mammals like rats.

Nepenthes, tropical pitcher plants or monkey cups, are another genus of carnivorous plants with pitfall traps. There are about 130 species that are wide spread, and can be found in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Madagascar, Seychelles, Australia, India, Borneo and Sumatra. The nickname “monkey cups” comes from the fact that monkeys have often been observed drinking rain water from them.

Most species of Nepenthes are tall creepers (10-15m), with a shallow root system. From the stem you will often see sword like leaves growing, with a tendril (often used for climbing) protruding from the tip of the leaf. At the end of the tendril, the pitcher forms first as a small bulb, which then expands and forms the cup. The trap contains fluid, produced by the plant, which may be watery ors syrupy and is used to drown and digest the insects. The lower part of the cup contains glands that absorb and distribute nutrients. Most of these plants are small and tend to trap only insects, but some larger species, such as Nepenthes Rafflesiana and Nepenthes Rajah, have been documented to catch small mammals like rats. --listverse

Facts and Trivia / Earth’s elliptical orbit
January 08, 2012, 07:12:03 PM
Most people know that the Earth orbits the Sun in an ellipse, rather than a circle, but the value of the Earth’s orbital eccentricity is approximately equal to 1/60. A planet that orbits its sun periodically always has an eccentricity between 0 and 1, including 0 but excluding 1. An eccentricity of 0 means the orbit is a perfect circle with the Sun at the center and the planet orbiting at a constant speed. However, such an orbit is extremely unlikely as there is a continuum of possible eccentricity values. The eccentricity, in a closed orbit, is measured by dividing the distance between the Sun and center of the ellipse by the length of the semi-major axis of the ellipse. The orbit becomes increasingly longer and thinner the closer the eccentricity gets to 1. The planet always orbits fastest when it’s nearest to its Sun and slowest when it’s farthest from its Sun. When the eccentricity is greater than or equal to 1, the planet comes around its Sun once and flies back out into space never to be seen again. --listverse

Tip #2: Stock up on canned goods, cup noodles, and MREs

Canned goods, cup noodles and MREs (meals-ready-to-eat, food eaten by American soldiers on the field) are the holy trinity of no-cook food.

They don’t taste half bad either. Remember not to overstock, though. Just about one cellar’s worth will be enough.

Do not forget to stock up on can openers and hot water keepers too, although when you’re on the move from looters or zombies, you might have to stick to your trusty Skyflakes, which, come to think of it, should also be on your prepper shopping list.

MANILA: Philippine President Benigno Aquino said Sunday that authorities had discovered a plot by a terrorist group to disrupt a huge religious procession in Manila, and warned that members had not been arrested.

Aquino said police had been tracking the group, which he did not identify, that was allegedly planning to sow terror during the feast of the Black Nazarene on Monday, which annually gathers hundreds of thousands of devotees.

He did not elaborate on the nature of the threat, but said "there is a possibility of it" when asked if the plot involved bomb attacks.

"The sad reality of the world today is that terrorists want to disrupt the ability of the people to live their lives in the way they want to, including the freedom to worship and engage in community activities," Aquino said in a surprise news briefing.

"Your government will do what it has to do to ensure the safety and security of the public."

He did not identity the alleged plotters, but said they they belonged to a local group whose links to foreign organisations were still being probed.

"There have been reports that they have been spotted in the NCR (National Capital Region) and there have been ongoing police operations to apprehend the same," Aquino said.

"Disruption activities have been conducted precisely to forestall any possibility of a terrorist plot."

Various armed groups operate in the Philippines, but among the most active has been the Abu Sayyaf, a group of Islamic militants founded in the 1990s with seed money from Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network.

The Abu Sayyaf has been blamed for some of the country's worst attacks, including a string of high profile kidnappings and the bombing of a passenger ferry that left over 100 dead on Manila Bay.

The government and military have frequently said the group was a spent force after its top leaders were killed and captured with US help over the past decade, but security experts say it remains capable of mounting attacks.

Aquino did not say the attacks were linked to the Abu Sayyaf.

The annual Black Nazarene procession takes place around downtown Manila, during which barefoot devotees parade an ebony icon of Jesus Christ.

"We're taking the necessary precautions especially given the nature of the procession for the Black Nazarene which involves quite a huge number of people, which makes it a very tempting terrorist (target))," Aquino said.

The doldrums is a colloquial expression derived from historical maritime usage for those parts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean affected by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a low-pressure area around the equator where the prevailing winds are calm. The low pressure is caused by the heat at the equator, which makes the air rise and travel north and south high in the atmosphere, until it subsides again in the horse latitudes. Some of that air returns to the doldrums through the trade winds. This process can lead to light or variable winds and more severe weather, in the form of squalls, thunderstorms and hurricanes. The doldrums are also noted for calm periods when the winds disappear altogether, trapping sail-powered boats for periods of days or weeks.

When the winds are gone the sea actually has no swells, on a clear day the color of the sky is reflected in the water. At night the same effect, with no clouds or moon, gives one the effect of floating in space.

The term appears to have arisen in the 18th century (when cross-Equator sailing voyages became more common). It is derived from dold (an archaic term meaning "stupid") and -rum(s), a noun suffix found in such words as "tantrum". --Wiki

The clock said, "Every minute is precious." The mirror said, "Reflect before you act." The calendar said, "Be up to date." The door said, "Push hard for your goals." The floor said, "Kneel down and pray." (Author unknown)

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - "It's more fun in the Philippines."

This is the country's newest tourism slogan launched by the Department of Tourism (DOT) to members of the press on Friday, months after the agency faced criticism over its failed "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" campaign.

Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. said during the event that they "want the world not to watch but to participate" in the new campaign.

He said "It's more fun in the Philippines" will be rolled out in international markets while the shorter "#1 for fun Philippines" will be the slogan for the domestic market.

"We need a line that is easily understood. Competitive. 'More fun in the Philippines' is true. Keri natin ito (Kaya natin ito)," Jimenez said about the concept, which was developed by advertising agency BBDO Guerrero.

The DOT decided to hold off on branding and marketing strategies last year after the "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" campaign was scrapped due to a major industry outcry.

Before "Pilipinas Kay Ganda," the country had the more popular "WoW Philippines" catch phrase as its tourism slogan.

Meanwhile, DOT announced that it will offer 30-day visas starting this year to "keep up with the competition."

The agency previously allowed tourists to stay in the country for only 21 days.
