Bible Study / The Sin of Pride
March 09, 2008, 05:12:28 PM
In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

No matter the wrong, do no violence to your neighbor,
and do not walk the path of arrogance.

Odious to the Lord and to men is arrogance,
and the sin of oppression they both hate.

Dominion is transferred from one people to another
because of the violence of the arrogant.

Why are dust and ashes proud?
Even during life man's body decays;
a slight illness--the doctor jests,
a king today--tomorrow he is dead.

When a man dies, he inherits corruption;
worms and gnats and maggots.
The beginning of pride is man's stubbornness
in withdrawing his heart from his Maker;

For pride is the reservoir of sin,
a source which runs over the vice;
Because of it God sends unheard of afflictions
and brings men to utter ruin.

The thrones of the arrogant, God overturns
and establishes the lowly in their stead.
The roots of the proud God plucks up,
to plant the humble in their place:
He breaks down their stem to the level of the ground,
then digs their roots from the earth.

The traces of the proud, God sweeps away
and effaces the memory of them from the earth.
Insolence is not allotted to a man,
nor stubborn anger to one born of woman.

Sirach 10: 6-18

Humility

My son, conduct your affairs with humility,
and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find favor with God.

For great is the power of God;
by the humble he is glorified.
What is too sublime for you, seek not,
into things beyond your strength search not.

What is committed to you, attend to;
for what is hidden is not your concern.
With what is too much for you meddle not,
when shown things beyond human understanding.

Their own opinion has misled many,
and false reasoning unbalanced their judgment.

Where the pupil of the eye is missing, there is no light,
and where there is no knowledge, there is no wisdom.

A stubborn man will fare badly in the end,
and he who loves danger will perish in it.
A stubborn man will be burdened with sorrow;
a sinner will heap sin upon sin.

The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs,
and an attentive ear is the wise man's joy.

Sirach 4: 17-28

The Blessings of the Just

Hallelujah!

Happy are those who fear the Lord,
who greatly delight in God's commands.
Their descendants shall be mighty in the land, a generation upright and blessed.

Wealth and riches shall be in their homes;
their prosperity shall endure forever.
They shine through the darkness, a light for the upright;
they are gracious, merciful, and just.

All goes well for those gracious in lending,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
They shall never be shaken;
the just shall be remembered forever.
They shall not fear an ill report;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting the Lord.

Their hearts are tranquil, without fear,
till at last they look down on their foes.
Lavishly they give to the poor;
their prosperity shall endure forever;
their horn shall be exalted in honor.

The wicked shall be angry to see this;
they will gnash their teeth and waste away;
the desires of the wicked come to nothing.

Psalm 112

The throat can swallow any food,
yet some foods are more agreeable than others;
As the palate tests meat by its savor,
so does a keen mind insincere words.

A deceitful character causes grief,
but an experienced man can turn the tables on him.

Though any man may be accepted as a husband,
yet one girl will be more suitable than another.

A woman's beauty makes her husband's face light up,
for it surpasses all else that charms the eye.

And if, besides, her speech is kindly,
his lot is beyond that of mortal men.
A wife is her husband's richest treasure,
a helpmate, a steadying column.

A vineyard with no hedge will be overrun;
a man with no wife becomes a homeless wanderer.

Who will trust an armed band that shifts from city to city?
Or a man who has no nest,
but lodges where night overtakes him?

Sirach 36: 18-27

Bible Study / Re: A Calling to the Priesthood
March 09, 2008, 09:51:36 AM
A message for those who, in their hearts and inner feelings, feel a calling towards holy orders, to the priesthood or to the brotherhood. A message that might comfort you:

First of all, the question of weeping during prayer is a definite indication of deepened communion with God. Prayer with tears has been practiced by Orthodox monks and saints throughout the centuries. St. Paisius Velichkovsky, for example, is almost always depicted in his Icons with tears flowing down his cheeks. Once during his celebration of the Divine Liturgy, he had a vision of Christ and had to be actually pulled away from the altar with ropes. He then stood, motionless, in a corner, weeping for five hours. Whenever he prayed to the point of tears, that was when miracles occurred through his intercession.People of prayer who use the Jesus prayer and others in a heart-felt manner often feel compunction for their sins, or they may feel deep compassion for the suffering of others, or else they may experience amazement at the Loving-kindness of God in salvation history and Christ's sufferings for us on the Cross. All these experiences lead one into the state of tears and the Eastern Church Fathers have always encouraged it.

You should thank God for giving you this gift always. The calling to the Priesthood and how we recognize it is always a somewhat difficult matter. In the more rational Roman Catholic West, there have been quite fantastic.

We must remember that, as Christians, we are already members of Christ's Royal Priesthood as we are Members of the Body of our High Priest, Jesus Christ. We are called to live as Priests in fulfilling our Christian vocation in faith, hope and love. We offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Divine Liturgy (Let US stand etc. as the Priest sings), we have an obligation, as St. Petro Mohyla reminds us in his nine precepts of the Church, to pray for everyone and to ask for God's blessing on all creation etc. The ministerial Priesthood exists to help us fulfill our vocation as members of the Royal Priesthood. The Church is a society of priests who live in Christ.

To want to become a ministerial Priest is to want to serve Christ and His Church in this way. The simple desire to do so is something which is itself planted in our hearts by God. God doesn't force us to do anything, however. The Priest prays the Office and offers the Divine Liturgy not on his own behalf alone, but, first and foremost, for the entire Church. Also, the Priesthood is what you yourself make of it, your style of ministry and the people who would be blessed to have a deeply spiritual individual, like yourself, as their pastor and guide. We all rely on God's Grace, which is the Holy Spirit. If you want to become a Priest, you should investigate it, perhaps even spend some time in a seminary. But remember that you must come to rely even more on the strength and power of the Holy Spirit and you must continue to deepen your close relationship with Christ, the True Vine. It is God who calls us to ministry in the Priesthood and in other ministries to build up the Body of Christ which is the Church. The best way to strengthen ourselves to respond adequately to God's call is to cling in spirit to the Jesus Prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner!"

In adoration of the Blessed Sacrament of the Lord Jesus Christ, and contemplating the coming of the Easter Season, felt a strong need to extend good wishes to my fellow brothers and sisters in here. Who also believe as I believe, who see as I see, who yearn as I yearn, who wait as I wait.

Let us await the coming of the Lord, this Easter Season.
This video inspired me today to post this on Tubag Bohol.
I hope those who watch it will be touched by it, and pray that

Lyrics:

tú me hiciste ver el cielo aún mas profundo;

me enseñaste a decir mentiras piadosas,

God Bless you, who ever you are.
I hold no grudge against you, I will remain firm to my stance that I don't believe any of your statements. :)

As I said before, let me reiterate it again. Until you provide us with proper sources, your accusations remains unwarranted. Purely fantasy-based.

Additionally, you contradict yourself, again.
You just said that you are not trying to smear the name of Senator Barak Obama, but your namesake is the antithesis of such a statement. You use "Obamabinladen"; trying to link Barak 'Obama' with Osama Bin Laden, the leader and organizer of the terrorist Al Qaeda group. Don't think that I and other Boholanos are gullible :)
Additionally, your statements in this thread were for on points and purposes to smear Obama, spreading unsubstantiated comments that have no legitimate backing from sources.

true that he had sex with a senator or true about his sexuality? I will wait for it to come out in the open, if this is true.  Nothing will be left unturned by media or by the kalaban if Obama has these skeletons in his closet.  Until then, he deserves to be the next US president!  Go, Obama, go!

:)

May the best candidate win.

Until then, let these primaries be clean, factual, and truthful!

There is no need to play the 'dirty' game. Politics is already dirty enough; there is no need for us to engage in such trite actions. The people, the plebeians, are the roots of democracy, the core of this Republic. May our choices dictate the election of our future President.

You just admitted that it is unsubstantiated.

Sir, I can make a statement that I can breathe in space, which is unsubstantiated, but o wait, it could be true. Who knows?

This is your reasoning. Which I dare to say is rather crude, crass, and unfactual.

Unless you provide us with facts, with sources to support such a claim, I remain doubtful.

Just like in science, you have a hypothesis right? Thats good! But provide us an introduction, methods, project statement, data result (primary, secondary etc and legitimate sources), then provide a discussion, conclusion.

Then we, the people, can decide. :)

Respectfully,

I'm not naive, I'm not as gullible as others in digesting such unsubstantiated information that you are spilling in this thread. I have not read it in the papers, nor have I heard of such a case filed in the news, neither in CNN, Fox, ABC, MSNBC, etc. Al Jazeera even, lol.

The point that I'm making, sir, is that this is the very discourse that leads to the spreading of false rumors.
This is the tactic of 'smearing' a man's name.

I don't play this kind of game. :)

I remain fully doubtful of your information, which have no citation nor credible sources to prove its factual nature.

Respectfully Yours,
Bran Lorenzo

When do you speak for the United States of America? Sir, these predilections of yours are nothing but unsubstantiated rumors. Everyone has dirty laundry, Clinton, McCain and every single congressman, and senator that sits in Capitol Hill  isn't immune to it. Barak Obama is quite 'clean' when it comes to political dish raddling, as compared to his political cadres.

I don't buy into personal rumors, I take into consideration of the man's track record, his performance in the Senate, his academian year as a Professor of Law at the prestigious University of Chicago School of Law.

Many of his contemporaries do not hold such high honors, nor full understanding of constitutional law, but rather indulge in infantile and narcissistic bipartisan 'rumors'.

Respectfully,

#47467
You're trolling. These are utter lies and are totally unsubstantiated. Please don't spread false rumors, when in fact many of us are well educated about the candidates and the candidacy.

You offend us Boholanos with such trite.

Bitaw, they are kind people.

Native Americans are more closer to us Filipinos than we think, because they are asiatic peoples, 'te. They are descendents of Siberian nomadic people that crossed the bering strait some 20,000 years ago. The first of their kind are the Indians of South America, who have physical phenotype that are similar to that of East Asians, and South East Asians. They are part of the Greater Mongoloid Race, to which the Filipino is part of that family.

Some illustration:

Incan Indian boy (populate most of Peru, Columbia and have mingled with the Spaniards to form the 'Mestizo Latino' of South America)

Native Sioux Indian; these were nomadic hunters and gatherers that populated most of central and midwestern United States

Inuit Woman (Eskimo); these are what native americans looked like before their physical phenotypes evolved to change in according to their environment. As they migrated south, to the jungles of south america, they grew shorter, and developed 'curly' hair as an adaptation to check the heat from the sun; and height decreased due to the foliage of the trees. The native indians of the woodland United States grew bigger due to the cool and temperate climate. The natives of alaska, canada, and greenland retained the original mongoloid features, primarily the prominent eye fold, as an adaptation to harsh and cold climate as well as to protect the eyes form snow storms etc.

Compare these to Mongoloids of East Asia; very similar in phenotype.

Mongol woman and mongol man

Native Siberian woman (this is the same racial stock that the native americans descended from; Asians)

I contacted her several years ago; through a Tagbilaran website. I wanted to know more information about fiestas and events going on Bohol, we exchanged information, she acquired about my name, and informed her that I was a member of the Lucino family.

Providence was kind; it turned out that she knew my aunt, Ma. L. Lucino, who is the Assistant Provincial Director of Bohol, of the DILG. She worked under my auntie, the younger sister of my father. Since then, she has included me in her forward list.

I always got forwarded messages from Fiel Angeli, and would read them quickly. One time during June-July 2007, I got an email from her with a link to this web site. I clicked it, thinking that it would be an interesting read (I was still in Ohio for my summer internship). I found the site, read it, and for a while was a guest reader. I was attracted to Mike's post on religion, connected with his faith--that and the information that was posted on Valencia, Bohol. So I signed up. And here I am.

Did you guys hear about the new Honda Civic Hybrid?

My friend just gone one; apparently it can get about 40+ miles to the gallon in the highway; and when you use the electric power, can get over 50+.

This is amazing.

I went to an adoration of the Blessed Sacrament of Jesus today at St. Agatha's Roman Catholic Church, attended it with some older women from 4pm-5pm. I don't know how, but as a man trained in science, there are times when I forget my science and believe only in what I cannot see. In faith, believing is seeing. In my heart, completely and truly, the Lord Christ Jesus is in the chalice, in the Blessed Sacrament. Beyond the gold, the metal, there is the heart of Christ.

Like what Mr. Ferniz said, science cannot explain everything. I trust that statement jud. For when I was praying with those elderly women, my faith (which has doubts sometimes) was reinforced; seeing these good, warm hearted elderly women praying the Lord's Prayer and the Devotional prayer to the Sacred Throne of the Divine Mercy, the Holy Spirit, and the Pleas for those in Purgatory and consolation from the Blessed Crucifix of Jesus---praying with them, and as our prayers in unison before the Altar of God--it transcends any explanation that man can offer. In my personal belief, that is.

There are things that cannot be explained.
God cannot be explained; the finite cannot explain the infinite.

I drive a V6 Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV.

She's a gas guzzler at 20 mpg in the highway, 18 mpg in the city. But where I'm located at, in the Snow Belt, she's perfect. Rips right through snow like knife through butter. Accelerates pretty fast, and all in all, a stable All wheel drive.

He Will become one of the best after he finishes his residency in JH Hospital. They are known to train doctors, and mold them into department leaders. In the hospital where I do weekend internships, the head of the Emergency Medicine Unit finished his residency in Johns Hopkins.

Your family must be proud, sir!
Its not everyday that a child becomes a physician, and one that graduates as Magna Caum Laude at the UPhils, and then lands on one of the most competitive seats in the United States says alot.

Mr. Ayag,

Yes, I am beginning 1st year proper this Fall 2008 (Im proceeding in a 5 year M.D/Ph.D program, God willing I finish it in time). If providence provides, I would like to talk to your nephew, perhaps he can give me some advices in taking the USMLE Board 1s and USMLE Board 2s.

Mr. Ayag, The University of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is probably THE best medical school here in the United States, its neurology and surgical departments are state of the art, and sets the standards from which other medical schools observe their curriculum. In actuality, there are two medical schools in the east coast that are superior in education;

1. Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
2. The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (This is an Ivy League School)

Your nephew's residency in Johns Hopkins School of Medicine- Hospital System is indicative of his intelligence and excellence in clinical rotations, Sir. They only admit THE best of THE best.
