Photos Unlimited / Lolo Mariano's Homeland: China
March 28, 2008, 08:17:30 AM
Pictures of Guangzhao, China. The ancestral homeland of my great-Lolo Mariano Tan (the father of my Lola Nating; the grandfather of my mommy)  (His Chinese name was Tan Ngai Feiyi) before leaving for the Philippines in 1909.

These pictures were taken by my friend Oi Ling, who graduated 2 years ago and is herself from southern China.
Seeing these pictures, I can imagine my Lolo Mariano walking this streets with his mother and father and siblings. Over a century ago.

Enjoy,

Ate Ging, It means alot to me that you are so supportive. You guys have been so supportive of me throughout my senior year here in college. And I really mean it when I say this that Tubag Bohol has been helpful in balancing my days. This forum is like a therapy for me. As well as a way to vent out. Since I joined this forum last July and to the present, I really mean it with all my heart.

I just turned in my senior thesis this afternoon. And I couldn't help smile as I remember all the advices I received from members in TB, the proofreadings that certain members did for me. Thanks Guys. For helping this stressed out student.

Humbly Yours,
Bran

I ask and pray the Lord God bestow upon me a clear mind to seek the truth and understanding, a heart that is compassionate for those who are unfortunate and mercy to those who do not know right from wrong. And a mouth that speaks the truth and words that can help comfort those who are afflicted. Hands that will heal the bodies of those who are in pain and in need. And the touch that can save lives, as the Lord, Christ Jesus, cured and brought back the sick to health, I pray that my colleagues and I who are to embark on the field of medicine, that we are able to follow the footsteps of our Lord and Saviour, Christ Jesus.

Through Him, nothing is impossible.
I ask and Pray for His Guidance through the rest of my days.

My heart palpates. 5 more weeks to go until I join the 500 other students of the class of 2008 of Allegheny College, as we walk the time honored steps of Brooks Walk and receive our diplomas. I look back at the years I've been here and I can't help but cry. I feel so nostalgic already, just talked about this with classmates and friends today and we started to cry. It could be the fact that I wont see most of my fellow collegians for another 5-10 years before our anniversary or it could be the fact that I've been thinking about precious moments here in Allegheny.

Each passing day moves me closer to graduation day,
Sunday May 11, 2008.

#46920
This is actually a good research topic for an aquatics toxicology class; or for a comparative neuroscience research.

I'll recommend this to some of my students as a possible senior thesis project; one can actually study nicotine levels as a factor of addiction and irrate action per time. Say take 4 groups; 1. a control group, 2. a group exposed to minimum nicotine levels, 3. group exposed to medium nicotine levels and 4. group exposed to dangerously high nicotine levels. Utilize multivariate analysis and compare. One can then use extrapolation or even polynomial and conic extrapolation.

Another research option would be utilizing the said methodology as above, but this time sacrifice the animal. After the animal's death, decapitate the turtle and take millimeter slide samples of the turtle's limbic system of the brain. Analayze any heightened activity of cells that are indicative of addiction in say humans. Compare the results and make a discussion of the case.

This is a really interesting topic, and illustrates the broad-term effects of nicotine as a multi-species endorphinal effect.

Thanks for the article. :)

General Topic / Re: Threats of Rice Shortage
March 28, 2008, 05:37:53 AM
We just don't have the land to produce enough rice for the mouths in our country. What the Philippines needs to do is secure lands that are rich in fertile soil and are ours historically.

You know what I'm talking about.

Sabah. It must be reclaimed. The natural resources and flat plains in that territory would spur immigration as well as reduce the burden of over population. Philippines needs breathing space.

Workplace & Productivity / Reviewing for the MCATs
March 28, 2008, 02:40:26 AM
For those who are intending to apply to medical schools in the United States, the MCATs (Medical College Assessment Test) will be necessary. Kaplan provides a 3 month program that will guide you through key subjects such as Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Verbal Reasoning, of which will be tantamount in scoring a high mark on the MCATs.

For those intending to take the MCATs this year or whenever, I highly recommend taking KAPLANMCAT. I took it last year and am grateful for its help.

To learn more, visit
http://www.kaptest.com/mcat

The MCAT test prep is priced at $1700.00, however it is effective and worth it.
Stay true to your studies, and you WILL score well on the MCATs. The rest is up to you.  :)

Regards and best of luck,
A fellow colleague,

For nursing students and nurse graduates who are intending to apply for US positions.
The key is your score on the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses).

Most US Nursing students enroll for the Kaplan course, and is highly recommended for foreign nurses and nursing students who plan on passing the NCLEX-RN on their first time.

Check it out and good luck o all the nurses and nursing students in here.

World Daily News / Re: The Fall of a Famous Governor
March 28, 2008, 12:47:27 AM
Thats the thing I admire about Governor Paterson, he recognizes his own faults and admitted it to the people of New York. The senate stood up with standing ovation for his admission, nonetheless.

As for Spitzer, he was so callous. He gave out over 80 thousand dollars to that young woman in a span of several months for sex and performance. The only reason why the FEDs found out was that he paid her not through his own bank, but through a campaign fund. The FBI and the IRS found out that there was such a large sum being withdrawn, did a clearance check and linked it back to this woman. They investigated and found out everything after that.

Spitzer should have known better, being a politician, he should have known that the public eye is always around. Its a shame because he did do alot of good things for the state of New York, and was a firm fiscal conservative. Its quite ironic that his views on fiscal conservancy towards illegal immigrants, ceasing tax increases, etc, but was quite 'liberal' in giving out money and funds given to him by the people, for petty things such as sex and lap dance.

#46936
Exactly, that is what my former room mate did when he applied for a Financial Analyst position for Prudential Life. He interned there 2 years back and was employed for the summer making 4k a month. When he applied for the position of FA1, he told the employer what he was paid as a student intern, and then asked them point blank if it will be increased. He expected a salary of about 45-50k starting (in relation to how much he was paid as an intern). Prudential Life offered him a position for 60 k with a 15k sign on bonus as a first year Financial Analyst. May I remind you that my friend only has a B.A in economics. The company told him that if you stay loyal to the company for 5 years, they will send him to get his MBA; all expenses paid. The median salary range for a Financial Analyst with an MBA is around 120-200k.

Point of the story: tell the truth, don't lower your standards.
#46937
World Daily News / Re: The Fall of a Famous Governor
March 28, 2008, 12:33:51 AM
Addendum:

The former Governor Spitzer is an example of a hypocrit. During the commotion of then-President William Clinton in 1998 for his alleged sexual relations with White House intern Monika Lewinsky, Spitzer and other die hard republicans were the ones that first denounced Clinton's actions as defamatory, immoral, and unethical. He was one of the first Republican politicians that demanded the resignation of the president.

And here it is, exactly 10 years from that day, he is the one caught acting on such 'defamatory, unethical, immoral' crimes. Hypocrisy.

#46938
If he did this in the times of Marcos and if he did this in the Philippines, he would have been given a complimentary firing squad.

#46939
World Daily News / Re: The Fall of a Famous Governor
March 28, 2008, 12:26:52 AM
The new governor, Mr. David Paterson is also legally blind and African American. This makes him the first legally blind and African Governor to sit as governor of the State of New York.

He proudly told his fellow state senators, "I am the Governor of New York City."

#46940
This man is not only obnoxious, but stubborn despite his crimes. His psychological and psychosomatic iniquities is illustrative of a psychotic individual. He dares to tell the judge that he will keep his lips sealed? Who is he to demand anything?

May the cleansing fires of  the pit be as equal to the crimes and anguish he gave to the women he murdered and robbed the precious gift of life. I pray that the souls of the innocents he wolfishly murdered for his own sick and sadistic reasons, are at peace.

May the Almighty Shine His Justice on this wolf.
God have mercy on his soul.

Well you done done me and you bet I felt it
I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted
I fell right through the cracks
and now I'm trying to get back
Before the cool done run out
I'll be giving it my bestest
Nothing's going to stop me but divine intervention
I reckon its again my turn to win some or learn some

I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait, I'm yours

Well open up your mind and see like me
Open up your plans and damn you're free
Look into your heart and you'll find love love love
Listen to the music of the moment maybe sing with me
Ah, la peaceful melodys
It's your God-forsaken right to be loved love loved love love

So I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait I'm sure
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours

I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and laughed
I guess what I'm saying is there ain't no better reason

To rid yourself of vanity and just go with the seasons
It's what we aim to do
Our name is our virtue

I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait I'm sure
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours

Well no no, well open up your mind and see like me
Open up your plans and damn you're free
Look into your heart and you'll find love love love love
Listen to the music of the moment come and dance with me
ah, la one big family (2nd time: ah, la happy family)
It's your God-forsaken right to be loved love love love

I won't hesitate no more
Oh no more no more no more
It's your God-forsaken right to be loved, I'm sure
Theres no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours

No I won't hesitate no more, no more
This cannot wait I'm sure
There's no need to complicate

Sure, you'll come into contact with some rotten eggs in the bucket, but thats just part of life. #46987
No, I wasn't given any punishment besides a talk down by the coaching staff.

The player who I had an argument with, Pat Sumek was his name, stopped his taunts. There was a big competition with linebackers and the rest of the linemen, which I was part of. But whenever we were in the locker room, all I would have to do was flex my arm and stare at him, and he would walk away.

The kinds of things he used to say were very racist, 'te.
"you f__ng gook", "asians can't play football" etc.
And one of the things he would do to some players that irritated me was spit at them. He would spit at their face, helmet etc. He didn't do that to me tho, if he did, I would have destroyed him. My helmet would have gone up to his chin.

Lets just say that it felt really good to shut him up. One thing I loved about playing football was the ability to tackle players in the field or in the practice. I do miss smashing my helmet on the opposing player or doing the helmet smash with another team mate whenever we sacked a quarterback or recovered a fumble. Good times, hard times, sad times, but all in all, I look back at the experience and see it as a learning experience. One of life's raw lessons.

Truly. The Chinese are only business oriented, it is part of their Confucian culture that stresses hard work, savings, obeisance towards elders and the concept of filial piety. The Chinese people have never been barbaric in that they colonized peoples. No, it is the contrary. China has usually been the one that falls prey to aggressive peoples that the Chinese have considered barbaric, namely:

1. The Mongols
2. The Jurchens
3. European Imperialists that colonized the coasts of China
4. Imperial Japan

All this talk of China being aggressive is nothing by talk and heresays by war hawks. We all know that the United States is a military power and China has no plans in ever going head on with the United States. The Chinese have learned all to well from the west of the costs of having a military-based colony. It all falls and eventually fails. China also is learning from the United States' invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. That is why China does not engage in religious wars or rhetoric, its stance is 'neutrality is key'. And right now, the main goal of the People's Republic of China is to increase its economic output and to increase the standard of living of its 1.3 Billion citizenry. War and imperialistic dreams are not in the forefront burners and never will be. Why should China do so?

She is already striving just to feed and address the needs of her own massive citizenry. Why would she want to conquor another country and feed the needs of another people that are alien to the Chinese people? As well as face international condemnation for an invasion.
Since China's growth is directly related to international consumption of Chinese goods, namely the US is the largest consumer, why would the Chinese do something as foolish and irate as invading another nation and thereby jeaporadize the investment it enjoys from international investors? It is an act of seld destruction, something the Chinese have never engaged upon in its history.

One thing that strikes me about the Chinese Merchants of the past is the fact of their stay. When the go to a foreign land, they do so with intent in staying there permanently. A typical practice was a Chinese merchant bringing his wife and his children with him; if not, he would marry a local woman. This practice has been seen not only in the Philippines, but in other regions of south and south east asia.

It is up to the Philippine Coast Guard to stop these illegal activity.

The same is also for Chinese fishermen in the Kalayaan Federal Protected Group, west of the the Palawaan Province. There are battalions stationed in around that group to prevent any illegal Chinese activity. The amount of illegal fishing in Philippine-protected territory is so vast that Philippine Navy actually rams the Chinese fishing boats.

These fishermen come from the coasts of southern China (which is populated in the hundreds of millions), and these fishermen will continue to come to our waters looking for fish. With the Philippine Navy so outstretched to protect all our waters and with limited amount of ships and government's slow nature in acquiring more ships for the navy, this problem will continue to arise if not addressed properly.

Indeed, China has always been a behemoth of a nation. However, from studying East Asian History, for most of China's military and cultural history, it has never shown or enacted on expansionist policies as compared to say Japan. Unlike Imperial Japan of the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, the Chinese have always relied on economic means and cultural ties to enforce Her political motives.

Take for example, during the time before European Imperialism, particularly during the height of the Ming Dynasty, the Chinese sent thousands of viziers and diplomatic envoys to surrounding Kingdoms such as the Choson Dynasty of present day Korea, to the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan, to the Chakri Dynasty of Siam, the Le Dynasty of Viet Nam, to the Sultans of Malacca-Peninsular Malaysia, to the Sultans of Java and Sumatra, the Sultans of Brunei, to the Sultan of Sulu and to the Rajas of Luzon, and the Visayas. These diplomatic envoys were given Imperial edicts to establish economic trade routes as well as political relations. It was customary for the Chinese Emperor to have visitations from royalties of these said Kingdoms, and China would grant economic riches of trade to these said kingdoms if only they would:
1. Kow tow before the Chinese Emperor, and by doing this recognize the Emperor's political and cultural legitimacy.
2. Establish ports for Chinese Junks to sail to and dock.

The Chinese flourished in their economic trade and we can see this during the late 15th to the early 19th century in South East Asia. Thousands of Chinese emissaries and traders were already positioned in the cities of South East Asia before the arrival of the Europeans; many were already in Ayuthaya , Kuala Lumpur, Singapura (the city state was actually established as a primary trade port town for Chinese  immigrants and traders to the British Empire in the Region. Thousands of Chinese established their presence in Yogyakarta and around key cities in Java as well.

For the Philippines, the Chinese established themselves in two particular regions that were powerhouses at the time. 1. The Sulu Empire, 2. The Rajanate of Luzon. Thousands of Chinese traders docked in the ports of Basilan and Luzon and as was customary, Chinese traders would even give chinese women to the warlords of Luzon and Sulu to maintain their interest. Popular goods that the Chinese wanted from the Philippines was hemp, rice, agricultural spices; and the Chinese provided china plates, teapots. When the Spanish arrived in the Philippines, the conquistadores actually grew weary of the presence of Chinese workers undermining Spanish authority that the Spaniards actually enacted anti-Chinese laws throughout the archipelago. It was forbidden for Chinese men or women to marry Filipino men and women or Spaniards for that matter.

The caste system that was established was: Spaniard > Spanish Mestizo > Filipino> Chinese> Dog.

But nonetheless, throughout much of China's history, she has never acclimated to militaristic take over of foreign lands. On the contrary, the Chinese have a natural xenophobia. They refer to peoples that are not of Han blood (Han is the pure Chinese ethnicity) as a barbarian. It is one of the reasons why the Chinese never expanded further south nor further north of Inner Mongolia during the classical Ming Dynasty (a pure Chinese Dynasty). The Qing Dynasty, which was the last Imperial Dynasty, did invade and take over Tibet, Parts of Mongolia and Eastern Russia, however this was only manifested because the Qing Dynasty were non-Chinese. The Qing-Emperor was actually from present day Machuria, and were non-Chinese at the time, and were of the Jurchen ethnic origin; alien to the Han people.

I personally believe, from looking at China's cultural and political policies, which were to maintain a control of lands within the Han sphere of influence. The Chinese people are not a aggressive group, and I cannot see them ever taking over parts of Asia as compared to the militaristic passions of say the people of Japan, who have a history of war and conquest as seen in their Bushido code, the Samurai and Shogun history. China, was unlike that. Their court etiquette was always based on political peace and serenity. The use of force was only utilized whenever there was a civil war or if a foreign power invaded what was Han civility and people. Chinese armies never, ever, marched outside of its borders for offensive reasons, rather, it did so on the defensive to protect their own home front. China attracted the obeiscance of lesser kingdoms because of her riches and her goods. Everyone wanted to take part in the riches and unimagined wealth of the Empire of Cathay.

In fact, European Imperialism occured because the people of Europe wanted to establish trades with China and India. Spain, for example, sent the ships of Magellan to travel down the coasts of South America and through the vast Pacific Ocean to find a way to get to China and the Spice Islands. Instead, they ran off course and landed on Cebu and Mactan. We all know what happened afterwards.
In actuality, the Spaniards established and made the Philippines a Royal Colony because of the geographical closeness to China. The calling to : 1. Baptize the heathen natives to the Catholic Christian Faith, 2. Civilize the Natives, 3. Establish port trade with the natives, 4. Establish Chinese trade; were all strong and there.

And even with the arrival of European Imperialists around her, China never went aggressive. China was besieged on all fronts, attacked by the British in the Opium War, by the Italians, the Germans, the Americans in the Boxer Rebellion, by the Russians, and even by their former vassals, the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese War. China suffered almost 100 years of rape and economic devastation from foreign powers before it ever had a revolution that ousted outside powers even then, it was only due to the Japanese Invasion that broke the last straw and drew up a military arm of the Communist Party to ride any and all foreign powers in China. And even after that, the Chinese have always practiced constraint. Never to go abroad nor interfere with matters by taking over another nation-state that was never part of the Chinese Empire of the past.

For the present, I can see China being a regional power in its shear economic volume. It has invested billions throughout south east asia, central asia and even in east asia. It has invested in Africa as well as South and Central America as means of engaging in trade and close political ties. Even their policies of today is similar to their policies of say the 14th and 15th century.
1. Send diplomatic emissaries to establish political relations
2. Establish trade

China has always been naturally a peaceful nation. They were never involved in some kind of human sacrifices, religious wars (The Chinese people are very tolerant and assimilatory if needed be). They are a survivalist people; and will survive wherever they are even as to intermarry with the local population. Look at the Philippines. We have some 2 million pure Chinese, but countless Filipinos of Chinese blood. Same in Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Korea. They blend in by peaceful measures, never by brutal tactics as seen by other foreign powers.
