Or I Corinthians 13 which is about love (in the English of the time of King James, “love’’ was synonymous with “charity’’):

“Though I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have no charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal;

“And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.’’

And it ends thus:

“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face; now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known.

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.’’

Let’s have a sampling of the Bible (particularly the King James version) as literature:

Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3:

“1. To everything there is a season, and time to every purpose under the heaven.

“2. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted…”

For poetry and sheer beauty of language, there is The Song of Solomon:

“1. I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

“2. As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters…’’

“10. My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.

“11. For lo, the winter is past, the rains over and gone;

“The flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds is come, and voice of the turtle is heard in our land…’’

The Bible is also a complete repository of archetypes or building blocks of literature. This makes it truly universal because it touches the very essence of human experience. It uses most of the resources of language and figures of speech such as imagery, metaphor, simile, symbol, allusion, irony, word play, hyperbole, apostrophe or direct address, personification and paradox. It is no wonder that there are many biblical allusions in the works of the great men of literature like Shakespeare, John Milton, Herman Melville and Ernest Hemingway.

Prof. Leland Ryken of the University of Oregon said the goal of literature is to make a reader share vicariously or relive an experience. He said, “The truth that literature imparts is not simply ideas that are true but truthfulness to human experience.’’ The truthfulness to human experience makes the Bible a book for all people.

The King James version of the Bible has had a lasting impact on the English language. Two journalists said that whenever we “put words into someone’s mouth’’ or “see the writing on the wall’’ or “go from strength to strength’’ or “eat, drink and be merry’’ or “fight the good fight’’ or “bemoan the signs of the times’’ or “find a fly in the ointment,’’  we are unconsciously quoting the King James Bible.

While the two main genres in the Bible are narrative and poetry, it also includes prophecy, visionary writing, pastoral, encomium, oratory, drama (like the Book of Job), satire, travel story, dramatic monologue, lamentation, proverb, saying, chronicle, oracle, apocalypse, parable, song and epistleâ€"all in all, more than a hundred literary genres. Truly, it is a complete book of literature.

For a country that is predominantly Christian, the Philippines is not noted as a Bible-reading nation. Many homes have a copy of the Holy Bible, but the question is, is it being read except on special occasions? The Society of Saint Paul Philippines has been trying to remedy this situation and promoting the widespread reading of the Bible by conducting a yearly National Bible Quiz.

The Bible is essentially a religious history, a book about God and his relationship with man. But it is also a book of literature. One of the best-selling books of all time, the Bible stands as one of the foundations of human civilization. It is perhaps the most influential piece of literature in the world.

"Oh Father," said a little Frog to the big one sitting by the side of a pool, "I have seen such a terrible monster! It was as big as a mountain, with horns on its head, and a long tail, and it had hoofs divided in two."

"Tush, child, tush," said the old Frog, "that was only Farmer White's Ox. It isn't so big either; he may be a little bit taller than I, but I could easily make myself quite as broad; just you see." So he blew himself out, and blew himself out, and blew himself out. "Was he as big as that?" asked he.

"Oh, much bigger than that," said the young Frog.

Again the old one blew himself out, and asked the young one if the Ox was as big as that.

"Bigger, father, bigger," was the reply.

So the Frog took a deep breath, and blew and blew and blew, and swelled and swelled and swelled. And then he said: "I'm sure the Ox is not as big asBut at this moment he burst.

Self-conceit may lead to self-destruction.

LGU Philippines / P-Noy, Yingluck and Shalani

By: Rina Jimenez-David

Poor P-Noy! Here he was, having to sit it out by (presumably) his lonesome in the cold clime of Baguio while his former girlfriend Shalani Soledad was basking in the sunshine of her wedding day as she got married to Rep. Roman Romulo, son of P-Noy’s former Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo.

Not only that, P-Noy could still be smarting from the “epic fail” of the botched matchmaking attempted by his youngest sister Kris, who tweeted, after watching her brother entertain visiting Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at a lunch reception in Malacañang that she thought the visitor, described as “tall, slim and attractive” was “bagay (a good fit) for P-Noy!”

But a few things stand in the way of a match: Prime Minister Shinawatra apparently has a relationship of long standing with low-key businessman Anusorn Amornchat with whom she has a son, Suparek. Then there is Yingluck’s oldest brother Thaksin, widely regarded as her business and political mentor who is now on self-exile from Thailand, who described his youngest sister as “my clone,” and may not relish losing her to the bachelor president of this country. And as one snippy online commentator huffed, Yingluck’s husband “has thick hair.”

It wasn’t the bald comparison that especially irked P-Noy, though. It was the report (in this paper) that Yingluck, who stands a statuesque (by Asian standards) 5’7”, is an inch taller than the President, who is 5’6”. “I am not 5’6,” nor do I engage in 5-6,” commented P-Noy (in what I hope was a humorous aside), referring to the erroneous report on his height (he claims to be 5’10”) which he likened to the usurious daily lending rate of informal creditors.

* * *

Many of the commentators got on Kris’ case, but this is not the first time the presidential sister, famous for her gift of gab, has given away secrets in the complicated world of show business, including her own life. This may be the first time, though, that she has transgressed into the political arena, and may even have committed a diplomatic faux pas.

“Very polite and diplomatic” is how a long-time observer of Thai culture (who lived in Thailand for some time) describes the prevailing ethos among the Thai. And the impression that Premier Yingluck Shinawatra is single may have been created because her husband has chosen to keep a very low profile. “The spouse may have some influence but never openly intervenes especially if it is the woman who is in control,” writes this observer. “You don’t have a first gentleman like Mike Arroyo hanging around and seen actively pushing things.”

We Pinoys, who tend to see the funny side of things, may think this is all a laughing matter, but “in Thailand the Philippines is fast becoming a laughingstock,” writes the observer. Under Thai culture, he explains, “for a bachelor head of state to be seen in public needing a marriage broker is questionable.” It says something about that leader’s masculinity, for one.

MANILA â€" Manila has welcomed plans by tycoon Lucio Tan to sell loss-making flag carrier Philippine Airlines, with a presidential spokesman saying on Monday it will improve its image.

The comments come after Tan was reported by ABS-CBN news.com at the weekend as saying he wanted to offload PAL, Asia's oldest airline, "at the right price".

It said he was in talks with San Miguel Corp. chief Ramon Ang and Manuel Pangilinan of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co about a possible buyout, although it added that he had not decided how much he wanted.

In December, Ang confirmed that PAL was seeking San Miguel investment to help pay for a refleeting programme.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said: "We welcome the additional investment of whoever would like to buy PAL because it would mean additional investments to the country.

"Considering the PAL is our national brand, the additional investments would improve the branding of our national carrier," he added.

PAL's image, and that of the country, was battered in September after a wildcat strike over Tan's proposal to outsource thousands of jobs, which led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

The airline has also been hit by soaring fuel prices, political turmoil in the Middle East, the Japan earthquake-tsunami disaster and competition from low-cost local carriers.

Facts and Trivia / The humble French fries
January 23, 2012, 04:56:56 PM
Despite the name, this dish originated in Belgium, the term “French Fry” simply means to deep fry. In Belgium you can buy fries in “Friteries” or in a “Frietkot,” they are served with a large variety of sauces or can be eaten on their own. Traditionally they are served with a spoonful of mayonnaise.

When it comes to Western pop culture, I think fries are the true king of the fast food â€" speaking in terms of popularity and preference. Interesting historical fact: Shortly after the May 1940 invasion of Belgium by the Wehrmacht, Hitler attempted to ban “French fries” because they were the central nutritional source of the Belgian resistance due to their simplicity and availability. -- http://listverse.com/

On Saturday about 100,000 supporters of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban marched to the parliament building to protest the EU criticism .

Some marchers carried pictures of Mr. Orban, others slogans such as "we don't want to be a colony" as well as Hungarian flags.

Among those demonstrators was a somewhat out-of-tune singing artist who had a message to the international community. She said "Hungary stood up against the world, but now we are under attack.

On Friday, before the rally, Mr. Orban pledged to change the contested legislation to avoid deepening the rift with the European Union.

The Orban government is seeking as much as $26 billion in financial assistance from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, although Mr. Orban tried to play down the request when speaking to reporters.

"But I would like to say clearly that what we need is just precautionary.  It is very important otherwise, you know, [there will be the] accusation which is going on among the European citizens like in [the case of] Greece, that the Germans feel that they finance something, which does not make the necessary efforts to help himself.  You know, I would not like to get that picture on Hungary," he said.

The prime minister adds the loan is aimed to make Hungary strong again on the market, after several rating agencies downgraded the country's debt to “junk” amid concerns over the political and economic situation in the country.

The IMF and European Commission have made clear that talks on assistance may only resume if key Central Bank and other legislation has been changed.

And with European officials also concerned about pressure on media and churches, more debates, and demonstrations, are expected.

About 10,000 people demonstrated in the Hungarian capital in support of an opposition radio station that is being taken off the air by the government, amid a showdown with the European Union. The protest followed a pro-government march that drew 100,000 people a day earlier.

The protesters marched Sunday in Budapest carrying placards saying "Down with censorship."  Opposition station, Klubradio, is due to go off the air March 1, after Hungary's media council, stacked with allies of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party, pulled its frequency late last year.

Controversial laws setting up the media council drew international criticism, and the European Commission wrote to Hungary last week to express new concerns about press freedom and pluralism, citing the case of Klubradio.

Adding to the pressure the European executive has launched legal action against Hungary over contested reforms of its judiciary, central bank and data protection authority.  Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is to travel Tuesday to Brussels to meet Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to discuss the dispute.

Facts and Trivia / The Origin of Chinese New Year
January 23, 2012, 10:45:21 AM
The Chinese New Year is now popularly known as the Spring Festival because it starts from the Beginning of Spring (the first of the twenty-four terms in coordination with the changes of Nature). Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging around. All agree, however, that the word Nian, which in modern Chinese solely means "year", was originally the name of a monster beast that started to prey on people the night before the beginning of a new year (Do not lose track here: we are talking about the new year in terms of the Chinese calendar).

One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite. People were very scared. One day, an old man came to their rescue, offering to subdue Nian. To Nian he said, "I hear say that you are very capable, but can you swallow the other beasts of prey on earth instead of people who are by no means of your worthy opponents?" So, swallow it did many of the beasts of prey on earth that also harassed people and their domestic animals from time to time.

After that, the old man disappeared riding the beast Nian. He turned out to be an immortal god. Now that Nian is gone and other beasts of prey are also scared into forests, people begin to enjoy their peaceful life. Before the old man left, he had told people to put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors at each year's end to scare away Nian in case it sneaked back again, because red is the color the beast feared the most.

From then on, the tradition of observing the conquest of Nian is carried on from generation to generation. The term "Guo Nian", which may mean "Survive the Nian" becomes today "Celebrate the (New) Year" as the word "guo" in Chinese having both the meaning of "pass-over" and "observe". The custom of putting up red paper and firing fire-crackers to scare away Nian should it have a chance to run loose is still around. However, people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the excitement of the celebration. -- http://history.cultural-china.com/

Whole Fish: The Chinese like to prepare the whole fish steamed, with the head and tail still intact. The word fish in Chinese (yu) is a homophone for "abundance," so they believe it will represent prosperity for the year. Call your local Chinese or seafood restaurant to check if it's on their menu. If you want to prepare it at home, here's a helpful guide to help you master this dish.

Spring Rolls: Because spring rolls resemble bars of gold, it is also eaten during this time to represent good fortune. They are usually filled with meats and vegetables, and you can get some crispy ones at the Edna’s Restaurant stand at the Cerritos Farmers Market.

Tangerines/Mandarin Oranges: The Chinese like to eat and display tangerines because the word for tangerine in Chinese sounds like “luck.” Oranges are plentiful in China, so it symbolizes abundance. There are tons of tangerines and oranges at the Cerritos Farmers Market, especially at Gonzaga Farms stand (they were selling the popular jujubes last fall). Also, buying these citrus fruits with the leaves still intact represent longevity!

Dumplings: Dumplings are considered a lucky food to eat during the holiday because the first banknote in China was called jiaozi (which is the Chinese name for dumplings) and their shape resemble the ancient Chinese currency called yuanbao (gold ingots). The dumplings are usually filled with meat and cabbage, wrapped with a thin piece of wheat dough, and served with soy sauce and vinegar for taste. Dumplings may require a little more work to make, but if you’re up for the challenge, there are recipes or videos to help you out. You can find fresh Napa cabbage at the Cerritos Farmers Market also at the Beyond Bok Choy stand.

Noodles: Noodles represent longevity, so it's the holiday to get messy and slurp on those long noodles with family and friends! You can make them with soup and add in cilantro, scallions and assorted meats and vegetables. The Beyond Bok Choy stand at the Cerritos Farmers Market has tons of Asian vegetables, so make sure to stop by on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Another way to make noodles is trying them stir-fried (which can be made suitable for vegetarians too) so pick up some ingredients and get creative!

2012 is the year of Dragon -- this will be the 4709th Chinese year. The holiday happens annually according to the lunar calendar and is celebrated over the course of a 15-day period. Friends and family gather to celebrate with lots of food, incorporating many dishes that are known to represent good luck and abundance because of their name or shape. We can all join in on the festivities by enjoying some of the symbolic “good luck” Chinese New Year foods:
