The Roman Catholic Church is not  responsible for the vices seen in the Philippines. On the contrary, it may have some contributorial role in implicating demographic as well as cultural mandates in society, that is impeccably undebatable.

The Catholic Church in the Philippines, under the auspices of the Royal Spanish Crown, and the hand of the episcopacy in the Archbishipric of Madrid during the 16th century was responsible for civilizing the Philippines, in the western definition of civility. The Church was responsible for the christianizing and baptizing of the the pagan natives, they were responsible in the creation of the barangay, the barrio, the cabecera, the poblacion, the municipalidad, the provincia, the estatuatoria, the ecomiendas. Urbanism and human social contract in such a heightened stage can be traced to the Spanish government and by the hand of the Church.

It was the Church who aided in the development of cities, and large communities so that:
1. The Visaya region and parts of Mindanao would develop a sustainable economy
2. Develop a sense of communal defense against debilitating Moro raids, which would raid and plunder hundreds of villages, and enslaving thousands (a practice that was practiced before Spanish arrival)
3. Social evolution; mass communication etc.

One needs to understand that the Church was responsible for the development of the Philippines in the local level, even to the provincial and national level. Church teachings were spread through conversions and through masses by Filipino clergymen (the majority of priests and monks in the Philippines were Filipino converts, there were only a handful of Spaniard priests due to shear distance of Las Filipinas from the Spanish Empire). Catholic teachings in the Philippines is localized form of Roman Catholicism, a "Philippinized" version, you could say. And thus Christian teachings are pronounced and proliferated to this day, since the founding of the colony in the mid 16th century to the present.

One cannot blame the Church for the overpopulation of the country, on the contrary they cooperated with the Spanish regime in developing the country from sporadic island villages to developing them into a unified, politically operational, religiously unified country. Organized into 12 major regional provinces and then subdivided into gobernadorcillistas ruled and governed by a gobernadorcillo. The Church, with parity with the Crown saw to stabilized growth of the islands: when the Philippines was under the Spanish regime , the population skyrocketed from 500,000 in the 16th century to about 8,000,000 in the 19th century. However the increase of population was due to the development of large encomienda estates, port trade, the adoption of traditional farming, the development of provinces, town governments and lower tiered organized units. Under the regime, the colony had inter-regional and inter-imperial trade with the colonies in South and Central America as well as with Spain itself. This burst of economic trade led to the population growth, as a response to the demographic and infrastructural developments implemented by the Spaniards. In actuality, what they did,  racial practices aside, was positive for the good for the Philippines. It 'made' the Philippines. We cannot deny that, it provided the basis for unity. So successful was it that it led to a Filipino consciousness and revolutionary yearning.

The problems with overpopulation is due to the unchecked health planning, pre-marital sex, unprotected sex, etc. The Church functions as a moral code, a cultural code, and most of all, a beacon that preaches the Christian Truth. The original Truth. The church, in its purest sense, transcends the political, the economic, and the earthly. It is the link between Heaven to Mankind. Heaven to the Philippines, in this sense.

Overpopulation can be blamed on lack of planning, on the individual's part. Government's inability or lack of ability in providing enough jobs and economic incentives. One needs to understand the basis of economics; overpopulation is an effect of development, and being a third world. As a country moves forward and becomes developed, population will eventually decrease.

Take for example:

1. The United States during the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century; the population boomed, families were having an average 5-7 children, the country, overall was poor. After the industrial revolution as the country stabilized, family sizes also reduced, averaging to about 3-4 children, and now to the present, the average has reduced again to about 2-3 children.

2. Japan. During the Meiji Restorational period in Japan after the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the country implemented a 'growth' program, family sizes were also heightened as a result. As Japan was a low tiered society and as it modernized, the family sizes were extremely high, as it modernized the family sizes decreased. And now to the present, the average children per family is rather low, ranging from 1-2.

3. Western Europe in general. Population and family growth fluctuated in according to development levels.

So therefore we should not be so pessimistic when concerning the Philippine population. It is a natural evolutionary fact. As our country moves toward a higher tiered society, population will eventually decrease. Within about 5-6 decades, the country should level out.

Cheers,
:)

My god, people get killed for such cheap and replaceable items?

When I go to Philippines I won't dress up. I'm going to wear shorts, chinelas and a raggy shirt. I don't care if people mistaken me for a boy-boy, or a farm worker. And if an idiot is stupid to try to rob me, I'll be like, "Sir, wa koy kwarta, sir."

Hmmm,

Seriously tho, it is so sad how there are robberies and crimes going around for petty things such as a cell phone, 100 peso, a wallet etc.

haha, mo yelp siya. He likes to be petted, hugged, be around all of us. His favorite is Dad, his amo. LOL

Well, he is basically his dad. When we first got Kaiser, we drove to the central valleys of Pennsylvania in Amish Country. When we went inside the farm, we asked for the sheppard puppies and there were 8 pups in the liter, 2 boys and 6 girls. 1 boy was already taken and 4 girls left. Dad told the amish owner, " do you have any more baby boys pups?". So the owner took all 5 pups down. And Kaiser walked to Dad sniffing, LOL.

My dad picked that small little puppy up, looked at him, and spit on his nose. LOL.

We took that 7 week old puppy home with us, and has been part of the family ever since. Dad spoils him, he used to hand feed him, gave him cooked meat. Its like his 'other' son, hahaha

nah..it sounds dangerous.. but it will make us rich jud! :)

Yes, very very rich. And not just rich, but respected and FEARED.

Malaysia will cower in fear at the Philippines, which has a population over 3 times that of Malaysia. Indonesia will beg the Philippines for aid in suppressing their ultraradical muslim rebels in their provinces of irian jaya, sulawesi, borneo. The Philippines will be a check to any Chinese growth in our waters. China will not want to mess with a nation as Philippines and risk angering 100,000,000 citizens.
The US will strengthen her relations with a powerful and economically stable Philippines.

I have a dream of someday seeing the Philippine Combined Fleet steaming across the pacific to train in with US ships in the ports of San Diego, San Francisco.
American citizens will gape with awe and say, "Wow, where are those ships coming from?" "Those are Philippine warships, Billy." "Really? Wow, Philippines must be sure as heck strong like us, mom!"

Yes. It will come true. RISE PHILIPPINES! RISE!
#46558
Think about it this way,

Indonesia;-

population: 240,000,000
military force: 303,000 (army) with 800,000 reserves; 74,000 (navy); 33,000 (air force)
economy: $ 900 BILLION GNP (one of the largest in Asia and in the world)

--

Philippines;-
population: 92,000,000
economy: $ 500 BILLION GNP (one of the largest in ASEAN)

Okay, Indonesia's population is 2.6 times that of our own, yet our economy is stronger than theirs in terms of per capita. Since Indonesia is 2.6 times larger than us in terms of population and less than twice bigger in economy, than our military should be at LEAST half their size.

Philippine Military SHOULD be as follows:
1. Army Size (150,000) with 400,000 reserves
2. Navy Size (50,000) with 1 or 2 cruisers, 3-5 destroyers, 5-10 frigates, and fleets of patrol ships, fast attack ships, transport ships
3. Air Force Size (30,000-40,000) with at least 8 squadrons; 4 planes per squadron. We should have in our inventory F-16s, F-18s, F-15s, F-5s, Bombers, transport planes, scout planes.

At our size, given our large economy (compared to other countries), and a large population, there should be no reason why the Philippines isn't a regional, militarized, nationalistic power.

We can do it. And when we do, ASEAN-PACIFIC will tremble at our wake.

4. Make the Philippines into a military center; build cheap weapons and sell them to latin america, africa, asia; to increase military trade and development with Russia, China, India, Pakistan

this means a lot of money for us. we could be the richest if we supply armaments. but were will we get the supply? do we have enough?     or are you only talking about labor fees income? hehe

Yes. We can supply cheap 'all-around' weapons to poor countries that cannot afford high tech material. For example, the Philippines right now produces the Armoured Carrier, "Simba". It is philippine made, and several requests from Argentina, Columbia and several African countries have been made to purchase some.

We can get the metal and material in our own country. It is said that 80% of the Philippine's natural resources is untapped. This is including tin, copper, mercury, cadmium, coal, natural gas, diamonds, raw metals, timber, oil etc. However, for optimum's sake, we can buy cheap Chinese steel as well.

We can build 7 major war plant factories, 2 based in Luzon, 2 based in Visayas and 3 based in Mindanao. The ones in Luzon will produce Philippine-made all-around fast attack boats, patrol ships. The ones in visayas will produce scout planes armed with light strafing machine guns and an all-purpose bomb. Even making Philippine-made air superiority fighters modeled after the F-5 Tiger II design. It will be cheap and yes it won't be super high tech, but 20 of these can take down 4-5 F-16s :)

Mindanao will be the base of operations for land infantry materiel. Production of artillery, rifles, mortars, air defense missiles, naval defense missiles, armoured vehicles, light tanks, etc.

Thousands will be employed. And the Philippines will be known to the region as the 'Military Hub' of Asia.

Philippine-Made

This is the Philippine-Made SIMBA APC (Armoured personnel carrier). Hundreds are used and fill in the ranks of Philippine Army, and Philippine Marine Corp batallions, divisions, corps.

Ha, ngano 5 man? daghana ra pood.  :-X

1. I sweat alot, even if I am in class doing nothing, the sight of students coming in and or questions etc, I begin to sweat; or if I am jogging in the gym or around the park, I sweat bullets. Sigoro over active ra ahong glands, pero ya.

2. I have very odorific feet, LOL. Since I sweat alot, my feet also stinks if I don't put socks on. When I go home, take off my shoes, my little brothers immediately say, with shirts over their nose, "Kuya! Baho imung tiil; Kuya you got stinky feet!" and then my mom and dad would say to me laughing, "Bran, adto sa taas uy, pa ligo imung tiil, jati baho kaayo."

And of course, I smile, go upstairs and secretly laugh as I wash and rinse my feet. Family, so silly at times.  :P

3. When I'm in my apartment, I usually am half naked. I like to wear only shorts or boxers; no shirts. I feel comfortable. Of course when there are guests, I put on a shirt.

4. I'm hairy, very balibohon. I have thick chest hair, leg hair, even back hair (shaved, recently), and thick facial hair. If I do not shave my face, in 5 days I will have a thick beard. Sometimes my Filipino friends say to me, "Why are you so hairy? Do you have Spanish blood?" and I respond, "I don't know. Must be the clams I eat" LOL ;D **inside joke**

5. I love going out on dates. I love to rest my head on a woman's chest.

Kiams, is your dad very conservative in giving out compliments diay?

My dad is like that raba, specially towards me and my sister. Maybe its because we're older now pero whenever we're home, we notice that he is very sentimental and huggish with our younger brothers. My sister specially notices that. She would say to me  with tears in her eyes, "Bran, why can't Daddy ever do that to me or you? Aren't we his babies too?". Sus intawn.

So yea whenever Dad ever tells us a compliment or when he hugs us or says, "I love you", it is impeccable how me and my sister fall in tears.

Sa first year sa ahong igsoon baji diri sa college, my entire family came to help her move. And on the day that my mom, dad and brothers were going home, my dad was on the driver's seat. We came to him to say good bye,  ako i gave him the amen and so did my sister. Then out of no where, my dad started to cry, "Mo mingaw man ko ninyo, ma wa naman ahong anak duha" is what I remember him saying.

Sus, immediately my sister cried, "Daddy, Daddy". Ako pood ning hilak kai our very strict dad was actually crying for us. Very rarely does he cry. Rare.

The only time I saw him cry besides this was when our Mama Luz, his mom, passed away in 1995.

reminiscing our younger days..

hmm.. in highschool i was known as the art girl.. i never had a permanent stroke sa penmanship.. maglahi lahi jud.. luckily tanan nice.. i can only make it stable if im like doing notes sa first subj..then sa next subj, lahi napud ako strokes..also mag lettering while ang teacher mag discuss.. i don't get caught cause sometimes i can scribble while looking at my teacher...;) i can write very small words way smaller than "3 guests viewing this topic" at the top..  haha

im also known as the late comer!! haha. our hiskul had this policy that if you're late on the 1st subj. they make you stand at the gym.. i found it okay cause i didnt like my 1st subjs anyway (history.p.e.religion then filipino..)lols! and most of my friends were late too! on purpose.haha

aw oo. im the bad girl.. badminton ba. youngest ko sa skul team eh.. 1st time i played sa intrams, they were like amused at this gr-4 luking small girl..  sus! diay pag duwa na.. dili diay dapat babyhon..lol ;) and yun, i was included sa skulteam..

college?

nka chamba pud sa USC team but i stopped. i got sickly kay grabe ang exercises than the game.

then, gpauwi ky laagan sa cebu.. at taC..

uhm i was known as the most laid back student..lol. i never study not unless finals na ugma.. but 3rd yr 2nd sem i changed cause nakatagam ko when i had a removal exam..argh! dah..gaba..lol

and yes. sa college i don't bring bag.. bilin ra ang books sa balay. so ako ra bit bit cellphone sa pikas bulsa, calculator sa pikas. id&bolpen sa necktie.. then steno notepad. and when mom permits. yawi sa car i bitay sa pants. argh (bugay no?)

kasuway namo mag tonggits while class? hehe! (ate secret tana ha)

kamo??

hahaha so you were a procrastinator in college ha?

Yea I was like that in my freshman year and then I realized that I was getting B's (in high school i was top 10 of my class, on the national honor roll and never ever got a grade below an A, well maybe sometimes A-, LOL!)

So for me getting that B in Biology was an eye opener for me. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to grades and very competitive. In my 2nd semester of freshman year I changed my study habits, I would steel myself away in the library basement, sit in one of their ball chairs and read-read-read-read-review-read-read-read. It has always been a daily practice at least 3 times a week I would sit down and just read from 5pm-12am. The more when it came to exams.

As for exams, I became less anal about scores. Realize that getting a B or a B+ on an organic chemistry and biochemistry midterm wasn't such a bad grade, when the class average was a D-, lol.

I cannot help being such a perfectionist when it comes to grades; coming from parents who are similar. But the best experience is when my Dad told me, "Good Job" when I got As on Theoretical Physics 1 and Theoretical Physics 2. I worked my asssssss off in that class and to hear him appreciate my work meant everything to me.

For me, getting the approval of my dad is important. Following his footsteps is and has always been a big part of my life. Specially in college.

Congratulations to your daughter, Ms. Langgam.

What are her plans after undergraduate schooling? Medical? Graduate school? Research?

Again, congratulations! You must be so proud!

wow, nice thread

In high school, I was very serious and barely ever smiled in public. I was a sports jock, veteran of the Williamstown High School Varsity football team; position of defense nose guard. Practice was the best time of my life, clashing heads, tackling, breaking bones, bruising myself and others. I loved the feeling and the rush. I was also in the track and field team; threw the javelin (long spear) and did the discuss and weight balls. Was part of the Williamstown Tri-County Royal Champions in track and field, loved the competition.

When it came to out of sports, I was very serious, not that many friends, but alot of 'associates'.
What can I say, i guess i was the typical guy in high school, serious kaayo, sensitive but never showing it. High school went by so fast for me. My priorities there was 1. Academics, 2. sports, 3. associates and girls.

College is better.
I love college life because it allowed me to explore my sensitive side, open up more to friends, and most of all, college led me to my faith, it increased my spirituality. In high school I was very distant in my Catholic Faith, I felt nothing, pero when I started college i found it again. I even had myself confirmed to the church, and attend some catholic retreats with college students and the local pastor. College led me to find my true calling in life, which is medical school and aiding people.

Its true what they say; You find yourself in college. Enjoy it, its an experience of a lifetime.

As President,
1. Increase military budget to 10% and purchase new warships, air defense, and increase the size of the army to 150k-300k troops
2. Implement a 'Colonize Mindanao' program that will focus on helping citizens financially to go and settle in southern and muslim mindanao
3. Pass a law that Senators who are linked to corruption--to be trialed by a jury and if convicted, will loose senatorial office and barred from running in any political office ever.
4. Make the Philippines into a military center; build cheap weapons and sell them to latin america, africa, asia; to increase military trade and development with Russia, China, India, Pakistan
5. Expand the Philippines beyond our borders. Reclaim the province of Sabah by force if necessary, reclaim Guam from the United States, reclaim Palau, reclaim the Mariana Islands. The Philippine will be changed from the 'Republic of the Philippines' to the 'United Federal Republic of the Philippines'  aka "The Empire" to our enemies ;)

'te,

The saying goes, those who are envious will always talk bad about those who are virtuous and progressive. Those who talk about us envy our humility and success. Let them talk all they want, in the end, they waste their energies in negating our goods. But we Pinoys will stand tall, yet humble in our achievements.

We are a survivalist people. That is what we are, and what we will always be.
