Beth, you got hit on the head? Sus, thats a bit too much of an extreme, uy.

Bitaw no? Strikto jud atong mga parents. Filipino parents, specially when the kids are raised in the Philippines, tend to be more strict than say American parents or assimilated Fil-Am parents.

IMHO.

Learn English Online / The Grandfather's Table
April 21, 2008, 12:06:11 PM
By: Kathy Pinto

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table, but the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about Grandfather," said the son. "I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor." Therefore, the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since grandfather had broken a dish two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days, he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes ever observe, their ears ever listen, and their minds ever process the messages they absorb. If they see us patiently, provide a happy home atmosphere for family members, they will imitate that attitude for the rest of their lives. The wise parent realizes that every day the building blocks are being laid for the child's future. Let us be wise builders and role models.

Always remember: "What goes around, comes around!" However, "Treating others as you would treat yourself or that you would like to be treated will grant you more love than not!

Our parents always tell us, Beth, "Studies before play". My father always told us, "Money can go away, pride can go away, wealth can come and go, however the power of the mind is your own. Knowledge is powerfully yours and can never be taken away. So study hard, work hard, and you will defeat the odds. If your parents can do it, surely my children surmount."

That always resounds in my mind. Each passing day.

When I was only a little boy, my father would already help me review mathematics and read advanced books. However, my skills are sub par as compared to my siblings. My little brothers and sister have my dad's love of linear algebra, calculus and natural mathematical intuition. Math comes so easily for them. Our parents always placed an importance on studies and placed all of us in rigid and strict rules that focused on studies before friends.

Our parents do not give out compliments so easily, Beth. To them, a 90% on an examination is not good enough; and is very psychological for us. It only invigorates us to strive harder. When our parents do give out compliments, it is an indescribable feeling of joy.

Like getting a toy one so badly wanted. lol

Are you parents the same way?

You are right, Mr. Ayag.

Mr. Ayag, I cannot help but smile when I read your posts. The tone of your post utters semblance to that of my father's, lol.

Mr. Jun Ayag, it is people such as yourself and Dr. Buac and company that deserve respect because of the achievements you and your fellow colleagues have made. Kamo man ang role model namo, an inspiration for the youth of what we can become when we put our faith in God and in our own abilities. You guys remind us of what it really means to be a Filipino Scholar and the power of the human spirit. Faith, mighty faith, the promise sees, and looks to GOD alone. Faith Laughs at impossibilities and cries, "It SHALL be done!"

You have my humble respects, sir.

Andre is super smart, he is the school champ in mathematics and in sciences for only a 4th grader. :)
And Don Rico was the school champion in chess in elementary school; he was only a 5th grader when he defeated 8th graders in chess. In high school he is a leading member of the forensics club (debate). He is like me in his debating skills. Perting strong na siya in math and science. He is not afraid to correct even his teachers. His academic rank is #1 in the entire 9th grade.

Lyrics

Starin' out into the wild blue yonder
So many thoughts to sit and ponder
'Bout life and love and lack of
And this emptiness in my heart

Too old to be wild and free still
Too young to be over the hill
Should I try to grow up
But who knows where to start

So I just
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away

Sun comes up and sun sinks down
And I seen 'em both in this tourist town
Up for days in a rage
Just tryin' to search my soul

From the answers and the reasons why
I'm at these crossroads in my life
And I really don't know
Which way to go

So I just
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away

Maybe I'll settle down, get married
Or stay single and stay free
Which road I travel
Is still a mystery to me

So I'll just
Sit right here, have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away

Down in Mexico

Lyrics

Sun tanned toes ticklin the sand
Cold drink chillin in my right hand
Watchin you sleep in the evening light
Restin up for a long, long night

Chorus:
Cause when the sun goes down, we'll be groovin
When the sun goes down, we'll be feelin all right
When the sun sinks down over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down

All day long just takin it easy
Layin in the hammock where it's nice and breezy
Sleepin off the night before
Cause when the sun goes down, we'll be back for more

Chorus:
When the sun goes down, we'll be groovin
When the sun goes down,we'll be feeling alright
When the sun sinks down over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down

This old guitar and my dark sunglasses
This sweet concoction is smooth as molasses
Nothing to do but breathe all day
Until the big moon rises and it's time to play

(Da me mas gasolina!)
A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)

Ella prende las turbinas
No discrimina
No se pierde ni un party de marquesina
Se asicala hasta pa' la esquina
Luce tan bien que hasta la sombra le combina
Asesina, me domina
Janguea en carros, motoras y limosinas
Llena su tanque de adrenalina
Cuando escucha reggaeton en las bocinas

A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)

Tenemos tu y yo algo pendiente
Tu me debes algo y lo sabes
Conmigo ella se pierde
No le rinde cuentas a nadie
Tenemos tu y yo algo pendiente
Tu me debes algo y lo sabes
Conmigo ella se pierde
No le rinde cuentas a nadie

Bible Study / Re: Weekly Readings
April 21, 2008, 04:52:00 AM
Sunday
April 20, 2008
Fifth Sunday of Easter

First Reading
Acts 6: 1 - 7
1    Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.
2    And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
3    Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty.
4    But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
5    And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Proch'orus, and Nica'nor, and Ti'mon, and Par'menas, and Nicola'us, a proselyte of Antioch.
6    These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them.
7    And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Psalm Readings
Psalms 33: 1 - 2, 4 - 5, 18 - 19
1    Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright.
2    Praise the LORD with the lyre, make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
4    For the word of the LORD is upright; and all his work is done in faithfulness.
5    He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
18    Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19    that he may deliver their soul from death, and keep them alive in famine.

Second Reading
1 Peter 2: 4 - 9
4    Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God's sight chosen and precious;
5    and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6    For it stands in scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame."
7    To you therefore who believe, he is precious, but for those who do not believe, "The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner,"
8    and "A stone that will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall"; for they stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
9    But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

GOSPEL

John 14: 1 - 12
1    "Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me.
2    In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
3    And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
4    And you know the way where I am going."
5    Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?"
6    Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.
7    If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him."
8    Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied."
9    Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, `Show us the Father'?
10    Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
11    Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves.
12    "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father.

In The Name of The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit
As It Was In The Beginning, Is Now, And Ever Shall Be
World Without End.

Glory Be to the Father To the Son and the Holy Spirit
For the Kingdom, the Power and the Honor Is Yours

AMEN

A Blessed Sunday to Everyone!
And may our week be filled with pertinence, prosperity, and free from anxiety.
Through Christ Our Lord.

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy - won't you look down over me
Cause I got a first-class ticket
And I'm as blue as a boy can be

Walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

Saw the ghost of Elvis
Down On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered 'round his tomb
There's a pretty little thing
Waiting on "The King"
Down in the Jungle Room

Walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
Do I really feel the way I feel

They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
You've got a prayer in Memphis

Now Muriel plays the piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
She said
"Tell me are you a Christain"
I said "Ma'am I am tonight"

Walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

Walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

Dr. Buac received a medical doctorate degree in 1983 from Cebu Institute of Medicine and is currently practicing at Tagbilaran City in the Philippines. Dr. Buac has a strong professional interest in General Surgery and holds membership in other professional societies, including Diplomate Board of Surgery; Fellow Philippine College or Surgeons Fellow, Philippine Society of General Surgeons; Philippine Medical Association; Bohol Medical Society.

By meeting the college’s stringent membership requirements, fellows of the College have earned the distinguished right to use the designation of “F.A.C.S” (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after their names. An applicant for Fellowship must fulfill the following requirements: possess the ability to speak and/or write in English; be a graduate of an approved medical school; possess documentation of the completion of a minimum of five years of formal postdoctoral surgical education; possess a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the country and state or province in which he or she practices; have five years of uninterrupted surgical practice in one location; have a current hospital appointment; have a current surgical practice; and display ethical fitness and professional proficiency as established by references and documentation. Moreover, the surgeon’s acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by the three-fourths of its board of regents.

The convocation ceremony was a highlight of the five-day meeting, which also featured reports on research-in-progress, postgraduate courses, panel discussions, symposia, and scientific and industrial exhibits. Total estimated attendance at the Congress was 17,106, including approximately 10,216 physicians. Allied health professionals and members of the scientific and consumer media also attended the meeting.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The college is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The college has more than 70,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

Personally, the physicians responsible should be punished severely for this; as a lesson to everyone and a show of legitimacy of the Medical Board.

This should be punishment enough.

As for the patient, he should not be given one peso for damages. It was his own fault for stuffing a cork up his anus. Why he did that, I leave that to him and his own personal reasons I do not even want to know about. I personally think the patient just in it for monetary gain; he shouldn't be embarassed as he was the one who placed a foreign object in his anal canal. Disgusting, if you ask me.

The point of the matter is the actions of the Physicians. Either gay or straight ang patient, or for whatever reasons naa sila sa operating room. Treat them with respect lang. And DON'T film things.

#45765
Exactly my point. Ka embarrassing kaayo ni.

Starfruit is such a rare commodity where I'm at. (In the mountains of Allegheny) lol.

I actually remember going to a local grocery market house the other week and saw starfruit on 'sale'.

They were selling it for $3.50 per fruit. Too expensive ra uy. But I bought one though.

This is a perfect prom dance song or a one-on-one dance song jud.

Good news. Para daghan na Filipinos mo-occupy sa planet.

Amen!

I personally do not see any problem with overpopulation.

One thing is evident, our country has raw man power. So as that we will not be easily bullied by foreign powers. Sure we may not be as advanced as other countries, but in a war, the enemy will  fail in the Philippines.

Our shear size, and man power will bring us victory through attrition war.

Philippines needs breathing space.
