come to think of it, yes.  but i would have appreciated the news item more if it specified so.  most readers, myself included, would take the item at face value and not make excuses for what it lacks in details much less bother to read between the lines.

only one question, which could have been asked by the news reporter of this item from his source, would have made the difference:  is it also on the rise in the case of prospective migrant workers to other parts of the world?  whatever the answer could have been, it would have meant only a few more lines to this news item.  those lines would have made this piece a more complete one.

the guy may truly have changed for the better that's why he opted to go somewhere far away to start life anew.  we owe it to each other to give ourselves a chance at redemption, otherwise, what is the virtue of hope for (the absence of which is also called 'sin against the holy spirit' in catholicism) if we let go of the belief that every person is redeemable?

lastly, let's talk of empathy.  how would we feel if we committed some grave mistake and be condemned for it forever despite our contrition and sincere resolve never to commit the same mistake again?

here's my 2-cents' worth, though:  items on the front and back pages are the only ones that are edited.  in-between, anything goes because most of these are mere fillers anyway.  so one gets to read funny and atrocious articles at times.  if the paper manages to win, and it will, being the only nominee for the visayas, surely it is well-edited only because of slight-to-none editing.  what a way to go!

wait, wait... there seems to be something unclear about this news item.  it says "prospective Filipino workers for the middle east..." only to say later, in the same sentence, that "...AIDS and HIV among Filipino migrant workers is on the rise."

could one call a prospective worker a migrant worker?  isn't a migrant worker already working as a migrant and not as a prospective one?

this is an unfair news item because, first, it seems to imply that the rise of HIV and AIDS incidence is in prospective migrant workers to the middle east only and, second, the incidence is by virtue of their being migrant workers.

i'm just an ordinary reader trying to make some sense of what i get to read.  this is one insensitive news item despite its named source.

one thing going with this blurb though is that it tends to be honest.  it does not guarantee hiring.  it only promises to forward the resumes.  how this 'training firm' can fire when it cannot even hire is one for the books.  also, does the firing happen before payments are made, or after? 

while these things can't be avoided in virtual forums like tb, members need only review the thread on the corella green village or tb green village to know that this forum had been robbed of its innocence.

if it's at all possible, we gullible members current and coming would do well to first verify anything that requires parting with our cash.  we can always ask the administrators or each other in this forum.

it's sad to know this, bene.  i've spent a greater part of my life in cebu city and have called it home.  home it isn't if we begin to watch our backs.  anyhow, the tip that i got these days is never to take a taxi on late nights and the wee hours of the morning, most especially if the driver is young.  chances are he's bound to be on drugs to keep himself awake.  and chances are he would be a potential victim of robbery-with-murder.  i just wish to share this tip with you too.
