Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in a contest marked by the spectacle of Miss USA falling down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row.

The new Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, was once kidnapped in her homeland and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure.

Tension got under the skin of Miss USA, Crystle Stewart of Texas, who tripped on the train of her bejeweled evening gown as she made her entrance

During the 2007 Miss Universe contest in Mexico City, Miss USA Rachel Smith also tumbled during the evening gown competition and became an unintended star on YouTube, where the video was shown over and over again.

At a news conference after this year's event, a beaming Mendoza said she wasn't yet sure where her upcoming year of whirlwind appearances would take her. But after a quick stop in New York, she wants to see her family again, enjoy some of her mom's home cooking and give everyone hugs.

"When I go back to Venezuela I will jump on my family and they will jump on me," said Mendoza.

In the meantime, Mendoza said, she is simply looking forward to taking off her high-heeled shoes and massaging her feet.

She declined to discuss her kidnapping, which occurred a year and a half ago, but took advantage of the occasion to call for global peace.

"I want to raise my voice and tell the world that violence is not the answer," she said.

Mendoza, 22, is a 5-foot, 10-inch (178-centimeter), green-eyed beauty who enjoys learning languages and photography. She appeared at the news conference in the flowing yellow dress and dangling turquoise earrings that she wore during the evening gown competition in which Stewart took her spill.

Stewart, 26, is a motivational speaker and former track and field star who is working on a book called "Waiting to Win." The Houston native plans to open a character-development school for young children and has worked with students with autism in the Texas schools.

During a weekend interview with the Associated Press, Stewart said she felt very confident going into the show and couldn't imagine experiencing the same calamity as her predecessor.

"All I can offer to the world and to America is to do my best," Stewart said. "Nerves don't play a part in this."

The final five contestants included four from Latin America: Miss Mexico, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela. Rounding out the final five was Miss Russia.

Miss Colombia finished second behind Mendoza.

Miss Thailand won the prize for best national costume and Miss El Salvador was chosen by her peers as Miss Congeniality.

The NBC show was hosted by talk show star Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown and broadcast live to hundreds of millions of viewers in 170 countries.

The tuxedoed Springer made a grand entrance on a motorbike -- the vehicle of choice in Vietnam, where the streets are teeming with millions of the speeding two-wheelers.

Eighty contestants gathered in the seaside city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, vying to succeed previous Miss Universe Riyo Mori of Japan.

Sporting yellow, green and orange bikinis, the 15 semifinalists strutted across the stage during the swimsuit competition to the sounds of Lady Gaga, who belted out the pulsating "Just Dance" in a platinum blond wig. Miss Vietnam, Lam Thuy Nguyen, was greeted with a roar from the Vietnamese audience.

The final 10 then competed in the evening gown event.

They performed in front of a panel of judges that included international fashion experts and Donald Trump Jr., whose father, the real estate magnate and TV star, co-owns the pageant with NBC.

This year's contestants spanned a wide range of experiences and aspirations.

Miss Albania was a professional basketball player. Miss Argentina says she has paranormal experiences. Miss Antigua & Barbuda is fascinated by snakes. Miss Angola was in a plane crash while trying to escape a conflict during her country's civil war.

Aussies give Pope kitten to keep him company

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:25:00 07/15/2008

SYDNEYâ€"Cat-loving Pope Benedict XVI has been given a kitten to keep him company while he relaxes and plays the piano ahead of World Youth Day in Australia, Church insiders told Agence France Presse on Monday.

The Pontiff, an avid feline fan whose home in Germany is filled with the animals and is guarded by a cat statue, has been given an 11-month-old tabby named Bella by his followers.

“Some of the faithful brought Bella into the Pope’s retreat to keep him company while he plays the piano,” said a World Youth Day source who declined to be identified.

“He is well known for his love of cats and the piano, and we wanted to make him feel at home,” the source added.

The Pope, who flew into Sydney on Sunday ahead of the start of World Youth Day celebrations, was holed up in an Opus Dei retreat outside Sydney where he is taking a four-day holiday following his 20-hour flight from Rome.

Bella, a tabby with thick grey fur, is “very playful . . . a little bit camera shy and loves cat food,” sources said.

As approved by LTFRB taxi fare by July 24th is

it's still P30.00 for the flagdown rate
pero total sa meter rate plus P10.00 na..

if ayala to SM cebu is usualy P52.00  karun P62.00  na

How ang pagpatak sa metro:
Meters are sealed once every year by the LTFRB to ensure that it conforms with the national standard for the Flagged down, waiting time and the succeeding fare. That is P30 for the initial flag down applicable to the first 5kms, and after that 2.50 for the next 500m, the succeeding count would be 2.50 for every 300m and last but not the least the waiting time 2.50 for every 2 minute. Waiting time is the time spent while not in motion during the trip (ex: Stop signal, Traffic..etc).

If naa mo valid complaints sa taxi. file it at this website  http://www.ltfrb.gov.ph/complain.aspx?navid=1168

take note of the : p
plate no.
operator
taxi company
or if pwede hasta ang name sa driver nga naa sa ila gabitaybitay nga ID

if meters are not sealed, you may report it to LTFRB site. especialyl if cge panikas and kabantay namo nga paspas ra kaayo ang patak.

Health and Food / Facts & Fallacy About our Health
July 14, 2008, 04:09:48 AM
1. Spot reducing

Many (and I mean, many) people believe that abdominal exercises (crunches and etc.) will reduce the fat around their belly and waist. No wonder they are frustrated when their bellies do not go away in spite of doing hundreds of crunches a day. This spot reducing fallacy makes people believe that that they can choose the exact areas where they want to burn fat by doing specific exercises. It has fueled the growth of the abdominal equipment industry because people buy the machines thinking they have found the answer to their "spare tires and love handles".

Here's the low down on this myth. Abdominal exercises (or other specific "toning" exercises for that matter) are great for making your muscles harder and firmer but they don't burn enough calories to make a big difference in reducing your fat layer. You need to burn 3,500 calories to get rid of a pound of fat. Aerobic exercise like walking, cycling, and dancing are more appropriate activities to make the belly smaller because they burn significantly more calories. Weight lifting helps too because the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn every day.

Fat is burned from all over the body, not just in the area that you are exercising. That's why most runners and cyclists have slim upper and lower bodies even though it is their legs that are doing the work. A now famous experiment revealed that tennis players have the same amount of fat in their dominant and non-dominant arm. If the spot-reducing myth were true, the working arm should have less fat than the non-working arm.

A good rule to remember is that you can "spot build or spot tone" a muscle but you can't "spot reduce" fat in a particular body part. You can build up or tone (make it harder, firmer but not bigger) a muscle with specific exercises (for example, you can build broader shoulders by increasing the size of the shoulder muscles) but you cannot reduce fat in your hips just by doing endless repetitions of side leg lifts.

2. Sweat

Sweat is one of the body's ways of staying cool and not overheating. When you exercise, internal heat is generated by the contraction of your muscles so it is natural to sweat when you work out. However, people take it to the extreme and think that if they are not sweating profusely, they are not burning any fat. If you work out in a cool and dry environment like an air-conditioned gym, you will probably not sweat as much as you would compared to exercising outside but this doesn't mean that you burn more calories outdoors. It simply means the body doesn't have to resort to sweating because the surrounding air in the gym is cool. Taken to an even further extreme, people imprison themselves in saunas and steamrooms or have themselves "body wrapped" in plastic or foil believing that this is an effective way to lose fat. This confusion between water loss and fat loss has emptied the pockets of many a naïve consumer who think they are losing fat when, in fact, all they are losing is water. Conversely, this myth has enriched the bank accounts of the people who take advantage of this ignorance by promising "instant inch or weight loss". The body is composed mostly of water so any major loss of body water will shrink the body temporarily both in inches and pounds.

3. Muscles and fat

When people stop exercising and see their once hard firm body turning into flab, it is understandable that they would believe that their muscles are turning into fat. After all, everyone knows that hair cannot turn into teeth or skin into fingernails but since we cannot see the insides of our bodies, this myth continues to live on. The truth is that muscle cells are different from fat cells and cannot transform into each other. What really happens when you stop exercising is that your muscle cells shrink because they are no longer required to be strong and your fat cells enlarge (assuming you continue to eat the same) because you are no longer burning the same amount of calories.

Attached to this myth is the belief that your body gets worse when you stop exercising so don't even start. People seem to be especially concerned about lifting weights. I hear it all the time. You shouldn't lift weights if you can't continue for the rest of your life because you will be even flabbier and fatter when you stop. It is true that when you stop lifting weights, your muscles will revert back to their original soft and flabby state but they will not be worse than when you started. You will gain weight only if you continue to eat the same amount or more than you did when you were exercising.

4. Taking a bath after exercise

This particular one seems to be a homegrown myth. I have yet to meet a Westerner concerned about how long they should wait before taking a bath after exercise because of 'pasma'. It could be an Asian belief but the Asian fitness professionals I have spoken to haven't encountered this 'problem' with their clients. How can this belief get in the way of fitness success? Easy. By becoming the reason why some people don't exercise. It goes something like this: "I can't exercise because I have to take a bath right after to make it to the office on time". If you cool down properly after exercise, meaning your heart rate and breathing rate return to normal and you spend about five minutes stretching (in other words, relaxing), there should be no reason why you cannot hop under a shower.

5. Cooling off

In spite of what your lola used to say, standing in front of an electric fan is a good way to help your sweat evaporate and prevent your core temperature from rising out of control. Splashing your face with cold water or wrapping cold towels around your neck donââ,¬â,,¢t really do much to bring down your core body temperature but can make you psychologically feel cooler, and besides, feel really good on a hot day.

Lastly, always remember this piece of advice from Dr. Robert Murray of the Gatorade Institute, ââ,¬Å"The cooler you stay, the harder you can playââ,¬Â.

6. Hydration & Dehydration

Check your hydration status daily by looking at the color of your urine. A pale to normal yellow color means ââ,¬Å"good hydration,ââ,¬Â while dark-colored and strong smelling urine means ââ,¬Å"poor hydrationââ,¬Â.

John Roach
for National Geographic News
July 2, 2008

This Januaryâ€"deep summer in Antarcticaâ€"explorer Jon Bowermaster suffered through a five-day stretch of torrential rains on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. The same cannot be said for thousands of downy penguin chicks.

Epic rains are unusual in Antarctica, even in summer, said Bowermaster, who had been in the region on an expedition funded in part by the National Geographic Society's Expeditions Council.

Photo of a penguin chick shivering

With daytime temperatures above freezing, the rains soaked young Adélie and gentoo penguins not yet equipped with water-repellent feathers (see video below).

At night, when the mercury dipped below freezing, the wet chicks froze.

(Related: "Adelie Penguins Extinct in a Decade in Some Areas?" [December 28, 2007].)

"Many, many, many of themâ€"thousands of themâ€"were dying," Bowermaster said.

The experience, he added, painted a clear and grim picture of the impact of global climate change.

"It's not just melting ice," he said. "It's actually killing these cute little birds that are so popular in the movies."

The freezing of chicks is just one example of how human activity is endangering about two thirds of all penguin species, according to a new paper based on decades of research and observations.

The conservation biologist behind the paper, Dee Boersma of the University of Washington, points out some of the many ways penguins are suffering, such as by ingesting oil from spills, by being run over by tourists, by having their nesting times confused by climate change, and by losing their prey to changing currents.

his response;

AN Open Letter to My Listeners
July 1, 2001
Another event in the seemingly never ending strange series of events in my life occurred, which will prevent me from being on the air this week. A horrible Racist article which has been on the Internet for almost three years, despite all our best efforts, has just been published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer (The largest circulation Newspaper in that country). This has resulted in hundreds of e-mails and death threats to me and my family. Even the slightest effort on their part, would have resulted in the truth before rushing to publish. The article appeared in the Entertainment section of the Sunday edition (July 1, 2001).
As many of you I hope are aware, I DID NOT WRITE this trash and never would, in fact my wife is half Filipino. It was originally sent from a computer located at U.C.S.D. in southern California. They have sent a apology which has been posted on this website (see below) for almost three years. Over that period of time EVERY inquiry has been answered by myself, my Webmaster and the Network.

We are presently taking all legal steps possible, however in the meantime there is a very real physical danger to my family and myself. This will require my full time attention for the moment. The Newspaper (as of this writing) still, has NOT published a Retraction, even though they have been served with a Demand Letter to do so.

The newspaper’s e-mail addresses are feedback@inq7.net, jvaruta@inquirer.com.ph, readersadvocate@inquirer.com.ph, should you care to help, by urging them to promptly retract this dangerous, reckless, thoughtless article. See you soon.

RT BELL DID NOT WRITE THIS EMAIL

Art Bell is as much a victim of this hoax as you are. In fact, he is married to a Filipina and has the highest regard for the Philippine people. He is as offended by the contents of this email as you are. He has posted these facts on his website and has responded to every single email from any of you with the truth and the facts. Still, the vicious anti-Filipino email keeps circulating and angry Filipinos keep emailing Art!

ART BELL DID NOT WRITE THE HATEFUL ANTI-FILIPINO EMAIL

Most recently, on July 1, 2001 the email attributed to Art Bell surfaced in a show business column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, without the writer bothering to check the validity of the story. Two days later, July 3, the same column was taken up by a retraction and an apology, which the paper will run every day of the week, through July 8th. Please go to http://www.artbell.com/filipino.html to see this retraction, as well as the statement from Premiere Radio Networks, the company that syndicates Art Bell’s radio program, Coast to Coast, and Art’s statement about the most recent developments in this
outrageous fraud.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer has now become a victim of this same hoax. They are doing the right thing by printing a retraction. Now, we need you to do the RIGHT THING.

SAN PEDRO, Laguna â€" “It’s a miracle that I am still alive. I thought it was already my end,” said Nilo Daygo, one of the survivors of the sunken MV Princess of the Stars, as he was welcomed by his neighbors and relatives at his residence in Barangay San Vicente in San Pedro, Laguna, on June 26, six days after the ship sailed on June 20.

“For about five days that I was floating on the extremely rough seas with other survivors, I did not mind that I was very hungry. I had not eaten food since Friday night because I was rushing to catch up with the boat for Cebu as I was expecting a new job there,” he said.

Daygo still vividly remembered two of his companions who died because of overexcitement.

“When we saw the shore, we were very happy as we thought that we were already safe,” Daygo narrated.

But two of his companions became so overjoyed that they suddenly removed their life jackets. “Unfortunately, a big wave hit our rubber boat, causing it to overturn and in the process threw off the two.”

The big wave carried the two away from them.

“We did not see one of them anymore, while the other one was fished out by fishermen, unconscious but still breathing. He eventually died, leaving only 28 of us surviving instead of the original 30 passengers of the life boat,” Daygo recalled.

“What happened to us was a great miracle. When we were jumping out from the sinking boat into the darkened sea of ruthless giant waves, I was resigned that it would be the end of my life. But now that I am alive, I would do the best for my family, relatives, friends and my community to be worthy of God’s magnanimous grace,” he said.
